The rapid spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pathogen has generated a huge international public health emergency. Currently the reference diagnostic technique for virus determination is Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) real time analysis that requires specialized equipment, reagents and facilities and typically 3–4 h to perform. Thus, the realization of simple, low-cost, small-size, rapid and point-of-care diagnostics tests has become a global priority. In response to the current need for quick, highly sensitive and on-site detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in several aqueous solutions, a specific molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) receptor has been designed, realized, and combined with an optical sensor. More specifically, the proof of concept of a SARS-CoV-2 sensor has been demonstrated by exploiting a plasmonic plastic optical fiber sensor coupled with a novel kind of synthetic MIP nano-layer, especially designed for the specific recognition of Subunit 1 of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein. First, we have tested the effectiveness of the developed MIP receptor to bind the Subunit 1 of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, then the results of preliminary tests on SARS-CoV-2 virions, performed on samples of nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs in universal transport medium (UTM) and physiological solution (0.9% NaCl), were compared with those obtained with RT-PCR. According to these preliminary results, the sensitivity of the proposed optical-chemical sensor proved to be higher than the RT-PCR one. Furthermore, a relatively fast response time (about 10 min) to the virus was obtained without the use of additional reagents.

Objectives To compare fosfomycin susceptibility testing with the commercial agar dilution (AD) test, AD Fosfomycin (Liofilchem, Roseto degli Abruzzi, Italy) and the reference AD method, using a collection of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterobacterales and Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates. Methods The collection included 119 carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales, 53 Enterobacterales producing acquired AmpC-type and/or extended-spectrum β-lactamases and 38 carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa, including representatives of different high-risk clones. AD Fosfomycin and AD reference method (ISO 20776-1:2019) were performed starting from the same microbial suspension. Results were interpreted according to EUCAST clinical breakpoints (10.0). Essential agreement (EA), category agreement (CA) and error rates were calculated as described by the International Organization for Standardization. Results Of 172 Enterobacterales, 143 (83.1%, including 92.9% (52 of 56) of the NDM-producers and 84.2% (48 of 57) of the KPC-producers) were susceptible to fosfomycin using reference AD. A CA of 91.9% (158 of 172; 95% CI 87.1%–95.3%) and an EA of 92.5% (136 of 147; 95% CI 87.4%–96.0%), respectively, were calculated for the commercial AD Fosfomycin test, with 9.8% (14 of 143) of major errors and no very major errors (0 of 29). Overall, 86.8% (33 of 38) of P. aeruginosa showed a fosfomycin MIC ≤128 mg/L using reference AD. An EA of 84.8% (95% CI 66.3%–92.0%) was calculated for the commercial AD Fosfomycin test, with a CA of 100% (95% CI 93.6%–100%) when considering a tentative breakpoint at 128 mg/L. Conclusions AD Fosfomycin showed an overall good concordance compared with reference AD.

In the present contribution we discuss the challenges and the results of learning a second language in South Tyrol, the multilingual border region in northern Italy where the autochthonous German- and Ladinspeaking communities have cohabited with the Italian-speaking community since the end of the First World War. The picture resulting from the data collected in the Kolipsi project (Eurac/DiScoF), an extensive linguistic and psychosocial investigation about South Tyrolean secondary school pupils now in its second edition, gives precious inputs to all entities that intervene in the process of attitude formation and change, ranging from the family environment to politics. En el presente trabajo, debatimos los retos y los resultados del proceso de aprendizaje de segundas lenguas en el Tirol del Sur, la región fronteriza multilingüe del norte de Italia donde las comunidades autóctonas hablantes de alemán y ladino han convivido con la comunidad italohablante desde el fin de la Primera Guerra Mundial. La imagen resultante de los datos recogidos en el proyecto Kolipsi (Eurac/DiScoF), una investigación abarcadora tanto lingüística como psicosocial sobre alumnado de secundaria del Tirol del Sur, proporciona información muy valiosa a todas las entidades que intervienen en el proceso de la formación y el cambio de las actitudes, desde el entorno familiar hasta el ámbito de la política.

Physical activity has been reported to affect endocrine function in elderly men.To establish an association between regular moderate physical activity and endogenous anabolic hormone levels in healthy aging men.Twenty four middle-aged (57.4+/-4.7 years) and 24 elderly (68.3+/-2.6 years) physically active men who in the past 10 years had been regularly bicycling during leisure time were compared with 24 middle-aged (57.9+/-4.0 years) and 24 elderly (67.2+/-1.7 years) sedentary men. Groups did not differ for body composition.Serum dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-1), free testosterone (FT), and thyroid hormone levels were assessed.In general, elderly men had lower IGF-1 (P0.001), DHEAS (P=0.013), and triodothyronine levels (P0.001) than their middle-aged counterparts. Independently of age, however, physically active men had on average higher IGF-1 (P=0.031), DHEAS (P=0.001), and triodothyronine serum levels (P0.001) than sedentary men. FT and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) serum concentrations did not differ across age groups, but physically active men had lower TSH values than sedentary men (P=0.021).Our results suggest that, in aging men, regular moderate physical activity is associated with higher levels of IGF-1 and DHEAS levels and with thyroid function alterations.

Information about the epidemiology of dementia in Italy is still limited, although this cognitive disorder represents a serious public health concern. We estimated the prevalence of dementia and dementia subtypes in the elderly population of a Northern Italian municipality, Conselice, in the Emilia Romagna region (n = 1,016 subjects aged 65–97 years). The associations of dementia with two modifiable risk factors, education and occupation, were also evaluated. Overall dementia prevalence was 5.9% (95% confidence interval 4.3–7.8), exponentially increased with age, and was higher among women. Of the dementia cases, 50% were Alzheimer’s disease (AD), but an unusually high prevalence (45%) was found for vascular dementia (VD). After adjustment for age and gender, education but not occupation was associated with both AD and VD. This association could not be explained by occupation, life habits, and previous history of hypertension or cardiovascular disease.

Background: Previous reports have shown elevated plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels in elderly person with impaired cognition. Objective: To study the association between cognitive status and plasma tHcy levels in centenarians. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Setting: Centenarians living in two northern Italian provinces. Participants: Thirteen cognitively normal centenarians, ten cognitively impaired not-demented centenarians, and 34 demented centenarians with a clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Measurements: Blood levels of homocysteine's biological determinants vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin B6. Results. Elevated plasma tHcy levels ( > 17 μmol/l) were common in the general population (77% of normal centenarians, 100% of cognitively impaired not-demented centenarians. 82% of AD centenarians). Demented centenarians had the lowest folate serum levels. Low or borderline vitamin B12 serum levels (< 221 pmol/l) and low vitamin B6 plasma levels (< 11.7 nmol/l) were found in 33 and 66% of all centenarians independently of cognitive status. Among demented centenarians only plasma tHcy correlated inversely with both serum vitamin B12 and folate. No significant difference was found for plasma tHcy levels among the three diagnostic groups, even after adjusting for B vitamin levels. Conclusions: Hyperho mocysteinemia is very common among centenarians, probably due to vitamin deficiencies, but does not seem to be associated with cognitive impairment.

The effectiveness and acceptability of Alfaprostol (an analog of PGF2 alpha) in inducing labor were assessed in 20 pregnant women at term. All subjects had no spontaneous uterine activity before treatment and the mean (M +/- SE) Bishop score was 2.45 +/- 0.21. The drug was administered by vaginal route at the dose of 10 mg every 3 hours. Regular uterine contractions appeared in all patients and delivery occurred in 85% of the patients after a mean time of 9h50min +/- 0h55min following the start of treatment. The mean dose of Alfaprostol utilized to achieve delivery was 29.4 +/- 2.0 mg. No major side effects were noted in the mothers and their fetuses at any time during treatment. Two patients exhibited vomiting. The Apgar score of all newborns at birth was 8 or more. These results suggest the usefulness of Alfaprostol to induce labor in pregnant women at term, as it has oxytocic activity without adverse effects on either the mother or the fetus.

Croatian Church Slavonic is a literary, bookish idiom used in Croatia from the XI/XII until the XVII c. based on Old Church Slavonic, an idiom created by Sts. Cyril and Methodius, and shaped by the Croatian vernacular. The Croatian Church Slavonic corpus consists of the texts excerpted from 11 breviaries, 4 missals, 3 psalters, 3 rituals, 15 miscellanies. It also incorporates all the 26 fragments dated from the period up to and including the XIII c. and several auxiliary sources. The corpus was created over a period of thirty years (from 1959 to the early 1990s) at the Old Church Slavonic Institute in Zagreb. It is a historical, referential, representative paper card-file of excerpts. It is also a parallel corpus, as it contains Latin and Greek parallel texts, those that were identified as closest to the actual source texts for the translational Croatian Church Slavonic texts. The Dictionary of the Croatian Redaction of Church Slavonic has been compiled on the basis of the Croatian Church Slavonic corpus. The fascicles of the Dictionary have been published since 1991. So far, 1 (1991)– 19 (2012), with the dictionary articles A–ŽRЬTVA(according to the Old Cyrillic alphabet) have been printed.

The first part of the article deals with general information about the project of compiling a dictionary of abbreviations in linguistics. It also contains a short overview of past research together with their main results. So far, some specific theoretical and practical solutions were proposed. Theoretical solutions refer to the Multi-level approach in collecting data for submorphemic word-formations, which consists of three aspects: 1) Structure and Modes of Production, 2) Cognitive Aspects, and 3) Functional Aspects. Practical solutions for the structure and modes of production have already been recommended with the results properly substantiated by the examples of abbreviations. The second part presents results of the analysis for the cognitive aspect of the multi-level approach. The semantic part reveals the relationship between an abbreviation type and the semantic (sub-)field it might be assigned to. Semiotic part is achieved by designating a specific interpretation of a sign's meaning, while the analysis of lexicalization and institutionalization confirms their contingent addition to this scientific lexicon. The motivational aspect takes two conceptual perspectives in consideration: the narrower and broader senses of the formation, and various semantic relationship patterns which led to the classification of fully and partially motivated abbreviations.

Die Benutzung von Smartphones, iPhones, iPads und Tablets im Fremdsprachenunterricht scheint den Studierenden den schnellen und immediaten Gebrauch von Online-Wörterbüchern zu garantieren, sowie unbegrenzte Recherchemöglichkeiten zu bieten, so dass sprachliche Schwierigkeiten direkt überwunden werden können. Doch sieht es danach aus, als würden die Fremdsprachenstudierenden das Potential nicht ausnützen und sich auf zweisprachige Wörterbücher und Übersetzungsprogramme konzentrieren. Auch ihr Benutzerverhalten in Bezug auf Online-Wörterbücher scheint dem der Verwendung von Print-Wörterbüchern ähnlich zu sein. Eine empirische Untersuchung mit italienischen Studierenden der Germanistik zur Smartphone-Benutzung zeigt, wie und wofür sie hinsichtlich lexikalischer Fragen das Smartphone verwenden, welches Benutzerverhalten sie generell, aber auch in spezifischen Übersetzungsaufgaben, an den Tag legen und wie sie selbst über ihre Benutzung mit dem Smartphone bei bestimmten Schwierigkeiten reflektieren. Die Ergebnisse vermitteln erste Eindrücke und zeigen Trends auf, die Ausgangspunkt für weitere umfangreichere Forschungen sein können, die ihrerseits der Fremdsprachendidaktik und der lexikographischen Praxis wichtige Impulse geben können. Interessant in diesem Zusammenhang sind die „ricerche incrociate“ (‚cross research‘) und die Konsultation von multilingualen Online-Wörterbüchern mit der Konsultation des Englischen als „Sandwichsprache“.
