Quantum Communications is a field that promises advances in cryptography, quantum computing and clock synchronisation, among other potential applications. However, communication based on quantum phenomena requires an extreme level of isolation from external disturbances, making the transmission of quantum signals together with classical ones difficult. A range of techniques has been tested to introduce quantum communications in already deployed optical networks which also carry legacy traffic. This comes with challenges, not only at the physical layer but also at the operations and management layer. To achieve a broad acceptance among network operators, the joint management and operation of quantum and classical resources, compliance with standards, and quality and legal assurance need to be addressed. This article presents a detailed account of solutions to the above issues, deployed and evaluated in the MadQCI (Madrid Quantum Communication Infrastructure) testbed. This network is designed to integrate quantum communications in the telecommunications ecosystem by installing quantum-key-distribution modules from multiple providers in production nodes of two different operators. The modules were connected through an optical-switched network with more than 130 km of deployed optical fibre. The tests were done in compliance with strict service level agreements that protected the legacy traffic of the pre-existing classical network. The goal was to achieve full quantum-classical compatibility at all levels, while limiting the modifications of optical transport and encryption and complying with as many standards as possible. This effort was intended to serve as a blueprint, which can be used as the foundation of large-scale quantum network deployments. Cr$_2$Te$_3$ is a ferromagnetic, quasi-two-dimensional layered material with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, strong spin-orbit coupling, and non-trivial band topology. The non-trivial topology results in an intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) that switches sign under filling and biaxial strain. Thin films can exhibit half metallicity. Using density functional theory combined with maximally localized Wannier functions, we reveal the physical origins of the sensitivity of the sign of the AHC to strain and filling, and we determine the effect of surface termination on the half metallicity. We find that thin films terminated on the Te layers are the most energetically stable, but only the thin films terminated on both sides with the partially occupied Cr layers are half metals. In bulk Cr$_2$Te$_3$, the sensitivity of the sign of the AHC to strain and filling results from the complex Fermi surface comprised of three bands. Filling of local minima and bands near anti-crossings alters the local Berry curvature consistent with the negative to positive switching of the AHC. Similarly, strain depopulates a local minimum, shifts a degenerate point closer to the Fermi energy, and causes two spin-orbit split bands to reverse their order. The nature of glassy dynamics and the glass transition are long-standing problems under active debate. In the presence of a structural disorder widely believed to be an essential characteristic of structural glass, identifying and understanding key dynamical behaviors are very challenging. In this work, we demonstrate that an energetic disorder, which usually results from a structural disorder, is instead a more essential feature of glass. Specifically, we develop a distinguishable-particle glassy crystal (DPGC) in which particles are ordered in a face-centered cubic lattice and follow particle-dependent random interactions, leading to an energetic disorder in the particle configuration space. Molecular dynamics simulations in the presence of vacancy-induced particle diffusion show typical glassy behaviors. A unique feature of this molecular model is the knowledge of the complete set of inherent structures with easily calculable free energies, implying a well-understood potential energy landscape. Due to its simplicity, the study of the DPGC provides a promising direction to unlock the mysteries of glass.

Confining glassy polymer into films can substantially modify their local and film-averaged properties. We present a lattice model of film geometry with void-mediated facilitation behaviors but free from any elasticity effect. We analyze the spatially varying viscosity to delineate the transport property of glassy films. The film mobility measurements reported by [Yang et. al., Science, 2010, 328, 1676] are successfully reproduced. The flow exhibits a crossover from simple viscous flow to a surface-dominated regime as temperature decreases. The propagation of a highly mobile front induced by the free surface is visualized in real space. Our approach provides a microscopic treatment of the observed glassy phenomena.

Exchange-coupled interfaces are pivotal in exploiting two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism. Due to the extraordinary correlations among charge, spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom, layered magnetic transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) bode well for exotic topological phenomena. Here we report the realization of wafer-scale Cr2Te3 down to monolayer (ML) on insulating SrTiO3(111) and/or Al2O3(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. Robust ferromagnetism persists in the 2D limit. In particular, the Curie temperature TC of 2 ML Cr2Te3 increases from 100 K to ~ 120 K when proximitized to topological insulator (TI) (Bi,Sb)2Te3, with substantially boosted magnetization as observed via polarized neutron reflectometry. Our experiments and theory strongly indicate that the Bloembergen-Rowland interaction is likely universal underlying TC enhancement in TI-coupled magnetic heterostructures. The nature of glassy states in realistic finite dimensions is still under fierce debate. Lattice models can offer valuable insights and facilitate deeper theoretical understanding. Recently, a disordered-interacting lattice model with distinguishable particles in two dimensions (2D) has been shown to produce a wide range of dynamical properties of structural glasses, including the slow and heterogeneous characteristics of the glassy dynamics, various fragility behaviors of glasses, and so on. These findings support the usefulness of this model for modeling structural glasses. An important question is whether such properties still hold in the more realistic three dimensions. In this study, we aim to extend the distinguishable-particle lattice model (DPLM) to three dimensions (3D) and explore the corresponding glassy dynamics. Through extensive kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, we found that the 3D DPLM exhibits many typical glassy behaviors, such as plateaus in the mean square displacement of particles and the self-intermediate scattering function, dynamic heterogeneity, variability of glass fragilities, and so on, validating the effectiveness of the DPLM in a broader realistic setting. The observed glassy behaviors of the 3D DPLM appear similar to those of its 2D counterpart, in accordance with recent findings in molecular models of glasses. We further investigate the role of void-induced motions in dynamical relaxations and discuss their relation to dynamic facilitation. As lattice models tend to keep the minimal but important modeling elements, they are typically much more amenable to analysis. Therefore, we envisage that the DPLM will benefit future theoretical developments, such as the configuration tree theory, towards a more comprehensive understanding of structural glasses.

To replace data augmentation, this paper proposed a method called SLAP to intensify experience to speed up machine learning and reduce the sample size. SLAP is a model-independent protocol/function to produce the same output given different transformation variants. SLAP improved the convergence speed of convolutional neural network learning by 83% in the experiments with Gomoku game states, with only one eighth of the sample size compared with data augmentation. In reinforcement learning for Gomoku, using AlphaGo Zero/AlphaZero algorithm with data augmentation as baseline, SLAP reduced the number of training samples by a factor of 8 and achieved similar winning rate against the same evaluator, but it was not yet evident that it could speed up reinforcement learning. The benefits should at least apply to domains that are invariant to symmetry or certain transformations. Glass formers are in general classified as strong or fragile depending on whether their relaxation rates follow Arrhenius or super-Arrhenius temperature dependence. There are however notable exceptions such as water, which exhibit a fragile-to-strong (FTS) transition and behave as fragile and strong respectively at high and low temperatures. In this work, the FTS transition is studied using a distinguishable-particle lattice model previously demonstrated to be capable of simulating both strong and fragile glasses [Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 265703 (2020)]. Starting with a bimodal pair-interaction distribution appropriate for fragile glasses, we show that by narrowing down the energy dispersion in the low-energy component of the distribution, a FTS transition is observed. The transition occurs at a temperature at which the stretching exponent of the relaxation is minimized, in agreement with previous molecular dynamics simulations.

The configurational entropy of supercooled liquids extrapolates to zero at the Kauzmann temperature, causing a crisis called the Kauzmann paradox. Here, using a class of multicomponent lattice glass models, we study a resolution of the paradox characterized by a sudden but smooth turn in the entropy as temperature goes sufficiently low. A scalar variant of the models reproduces the Kauzmann paradox with thermodynamic properties at very low temperatures dominated by correlations. An exactly solvable vector variant without correlation illustrates that a sudden entropy turn occurs when discrete local excitations are largely suppressed. Atomic-level defects in van der Waals (vdW) materials are essential building blocks for quantum technologies and quantum sensing applications. The layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr is an outstanding candidate for exploring optically active defects owing to a direct gap in addition to a rich magnetic phase diagram including a recently hypothesized defect-induced magnetic order at low temperature. Here, we show optically active defects in CrSBr that are probes of the local magnetic environment. We observe spectrally narrow (1 meV) defect emission in CrSBr that is correlated with both the bulk magnetic order and an additional low temperature defect-induced magnetic order. We elucidate the origin of this magnetic order in the context of local and non-local exchange coupling effects. Our work establishes vdW magnets like CrSBr as an exceptional platform to optically study defects that are correlated with the magnetic lattice. Magnetic transition metal chalcogenides form an emerging platform for exploring spin-orbit driven Berry phase phenomena owing to the nontrivial interplay between topology and magnetism. Here we show that the anomalous Hall effect in pristine Cr2Te3 thin films manifests a unique temperature-dependent sign reversal at nonzero magnetization, resulting from the momentum-space Berry curvature as established by first-principles simulations. The sign change is strain tunable, enabled by the sharp and well-defined substrate/film interface in the quasi-two-dimensional Cr2Te3 epitaxial films, revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and depth-sensitive polarized neutron reflectometry. This Berry phase effect further introduces hump-shaped Hall peaks in pristine Cr2Te3 near the coercive field during the magnetization switching process, owing to the presence of strain-modulated magnetic domains. The quantum anomalous Hall effect refers to the quantization of Hall effect in the absence of applied magnetic field. The quantum anomalous Hall effect is of topological nature and well suited for field-free resistance metrology and low-power information processing utilizing dissipationless chiral edge transport. The macroscopic coherence in superconductors supports dissipationless supercurrents which could play a central role in emerging quantum technologies. Accomplishing unequal supercurrents in the forward and backward directions would enable unprecedented functionalities. This nonreciprocity of critical supercurrents is called superconducting (SC) diode effect. We demonstrate strong SC diode effect in conventional SC thin films, such as niobium and vanadium, employing external magnetic fields as small as 1 Oe. Interfacing the SC layer with a ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS, we further accomplish non-volatile SC diode effect reaching a giant efficiency of 65%. By careful control experiments and theoretical modeling, we demonstrate that the critical supercurrent nonreciprocity in SC thin films could be easily accomplished with asymmetrical vortex edge/surface barriers and the universal Meissner screening current governing the critical currents. Our engineering of the SC diode effect in simple systems opens door for novel technologies. Meanwhile, we reveal the ubiquity of Meissner screening effect induced SC diode effect in superconducting films, which should be eliminated with great care in the search of exotic superconducting states harboring finite-momentum Cooper pairing., Comment: 27 pages, 16 figures

Automatic laparoscope motion control is fundamentally important for surgeons to efficiently perform operations. However, its traditional control methods based on tool tracking without considering information hidden in surgical scenes are not intelligent enough, while the latest supervised imitation learning (IL)-based methods require expensive sensor data and suffer from distribution mismatch issues caused by limited demonstrations. In this paper, we propose a novel Imitation Learning framework for Laparoscope Control (ILLC) with reinforcement learning (RL), which can efficiently learn the control policy from limited surgical video clips. Specially, we first extract surgical laparoscope trajectories from unlabeled videos as the demonstrations and reconstruct the corresponding surgical scenes. To fully learn from limited motion trajectory demonstrations, we propose Shape Preserving Trajectory Augmentation (SPTA) to augment these data, and build a simulation environment that supports parallel RGB-D rendering to reinforce the RL policy for interacting with the environment efficiently. With adversarial training for IL, we obtain the laparoscope control policy based on the generated rollouts and surgical demonstrations. Multiple magnetic skyrmion phases add an additional degree of freedom for skyrmion based ultrahigh-density spin memory devices. Extending the field to two-dimensional van der Waals magnets is a rewarding challenge, where the realizable degree of freedoms (e.g. thickness, twisting angle and electrical gating) and high skyrmion density result in intriguing new properties and enhanced functionality. We report a van der Waals interface, formed by two 2D ferromagnets Cr2Ge2Te6 and Fe3GeTe2 with a Curie temperature of ~65 K and ~205 K, respectively, hosting two groups of magnetic skyrmions. Two sets of topological Hall effect are observed below 60 K when Cr2Ge2Te6 is magnetically ordered. These two groups of skyrmions are directly imaged using magnetic force microscopy. Interestingly, the magnetic skyrmions persist in the heterostructure in the remanent state with zero applied magnetic field. Particle swaps can drastically accelerate dynamics in glass. The mechanism is expected to be vital for a fundamental understanding of glassy dynamics. To extract defining features, we propose a partial swappability with a fraction {\phi_s} of swap-initiating particles, which can only swap locally with each other or with regular particles. We focus on the swap-dominating regime. At all temperatures studied, particle diffusion coefficients scale with {\phi_s} in unexpected power laws with temperature-dependent exponents, consistent with the kinetic picture of glass transition. At small {\phi_s}, swap-initiators, becoming defect particles, induce remarkably typical glassy dynamics of regular particles. This supports defect models of glass., Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures
