1. Identification of Settling Velocity with Physics Informed Neural Networks For Sediment Laden Flows

Abstract

Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have shown great potential in the context of fluid dynamics simulations, particularly in reconstructing flow fields and identifying key parameters. In this study, we explore the application of PINNs to recover the dimensionless settling velocity for sedimentation flow. The flow involves sediment-laden fresh water overlying salt water, which is described by Navier-Stokes equations coupled with sediment concentration and salinity transport equations. Two cases are investigated: one where the training data contains the salinity and sediment concentration fields, and another where it contains the velocity field. For both cases, we investigate several flow regimes and show that the model is capable of inferring the unknown parameter and reconstructing the hydrodynamic field of the flow. The quality of the model inference is assessed by comparing it with numerical simulations from a high-fidelity semi-Lagrangian solver. We demonstrate the model's robustness to noise by training it with data corrupted by noise of varying magnitudes, highlighting the potential of PINNs for real-world applications.

Abstract

In this paper, we apply Physics Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to infer velocity and pressure field from Light Attenuation Technique (LAT) measurements for gravity current induced by lock-exchange. In a PINN model, physical laws are embedded in the loss function of a neural network, such that the model fits the training data but is also constrained to reduce the residuals of the governing equations. PINNs are able to solve ill-posed inverse problems training on sparse and noisy data, and therefore can be applied to real engineering applications. The noise robustness of PINNs and the model parameters are investigated in a 2 dimensions toy case on a lock-exchange configuration, employing synthetic data. Then we train a PINN with experimental LAT measurements and quantitatively compare the velocity fields inferred to Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements performed simultaneously on the same experiment.The results state that accurate and useful quantities can be derived from a PINN model trained on real experimental data which is encouraging for a better description of gravity currents.

Abstract

Summary: Background: In industrialized countries, the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) appears stabilized. This study examined the incidence and phenotype of IBD in Northern France over a 30-year period. Methods: Including all IBD patients recorded in the EPIMAD population-based registry from 1988 to 2017 in Northern France, we described the incidence and clinical presentation of IBD according to age, sex and time. Findings: A total of 22,879 incident IBD cases were documented (59% (n = 13,445) of Crohn’s disease (CD), 38% (n = 8803) of ulcerative colitis (UC), 3% (n = 631) of IBD unclassified (IBDU)). Over the study period, incidence of IBD, CD and UC was 12.7, 7.2 and 5.1 per 105 person-years, respectively. 4. Physics-informed neural networks for gravity currents reconstruction from limited data

Abstract

The present work investigates the use of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) for the 3D reconstruction of unsteady gravity currents from limited data. In the PINN context, the flow fields are reconstructed by training a neural network whose objective function penalizes the mismatch between the network predictions and the observed data and embeds the underlying equations using automatic differentiation. This study relies on a high-fidelity numerical experiment of the canonical lock-exchange configuration. This allows us to benchmark quantitatively the PINNs reconstruction capabilities on several training databases that mimic state-of-the-art experimental measurement techniques for density and velocity. Notably, spatially averaged density measurements by light attenuation technique (LAT) are employed for the training procedure. An optimal experimental setup for flow reconstruction by PINNs is proposed according to two criteria : the implementation complexity and the accuracy of the inferred fields.

7. Prebunking earthquake predictions on social media

Abstract

Earthquake misinformation has not only a significant impact on crisis management, but also on trust in scientific information and institutions. As a global center for seismic information, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) has developed a strategy to combat false information related to earthquakes, particularly on Twitter (now known as X). This strategy includes the automation of prebunking tweets to prevent the spread of false information and, particularly unreliable claims of earthquake predictions. In the field of false information, predictions of earthquakes have a particular characteristic: their appearance follows a specific dynamic and the attention paid to them is predictable, which makes the automation of countermeasures (prebunking and debunking) both possible and relevant. Therefore, the objectives of the EMSC’s automatic tweets are to warn people in advance, particularly those who may be vulnerable to earthquake misinformation, while filling the information void with verified, scientifically-based information in the meantime. This paper seeks to examine the usefulness of such a tool. It does so by analyzing users’ engagement with these tweets. In addition, it focuses on two case studies, the seismic sequence in Turkey following the M7.8 earthquake on February 6, 2023 and the M6.8 Morocco earthquake on September 8, 2023. The results show engagement with the automatically generated tweets but an even greater interaction and engagement with manual tweets, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach. Recommendations include optimizing the visibility of the tweets, extending efforts beyond social media, and exploring alternative platforms. The paper advocates for a comprehensive strategy, combining automated tools with manual engagement and leveraging diverse communication channels to take into account cultural differences.

Permasalahan yang dikaji pada artikel ini adalah Kajian Yuridis Upaya Hukum Persaingan Usaha Dalam Menciptakan Keseimbangan Antara Kepentingan Pelaku Usaha Dan Perlindungan Konsumen. Metode pendekatan yang akan digunakan adalah yuridis normative. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif analitis dan hasil pengolahan data selanjutnya dianalisis dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hak konsumen sangat memiliki kaitan erat dengan persaingan usaha, apabila terjadi persaingan curang dan konsumen menjadi korban maka, konsumen mempunyai hak mendapatkan ganti rugi. Konsumen juga memiliki hak untuk mendapatkan advokasi, perlindungan, dan upaya penyelesaian sengketa perlindungan konsumen secara patut. Akan lebih baik jika terjadi praktik monopoli dan persaingan usaha tidak sehat konsumen dapat langsung menuntut hak nya pada perkara tersebut tanpa perlu mengajukan gugatan ganti kerugian kembali. Abstract

Social media such as Facebook or Twitter are at present considered part of the communication systems of many seismological institutes, including the European–Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC). Since 2012, the EMSC has been operating a hybrid Twitter system named @LastQuake comprising a bot for rapid information on global felt earthquakes and their effects, which is complemented by manual moderation that provides quasi-systematic and rapid answers to users' questions, especially after damaging earthquakes and earthquake sequences. The 2022 release of @LastQuake transcends a mere alert service and possessess additional capabilities, including fighting against misinformation and enhancing earthquake risk awareness and preparedness by exploiting the teachable moments opened by widely felt but non-damaging earthquakes. @LastQuake significantly increases the visibility and audience of the European–Mediterranean Seismological Center services, even in regions where its smartphone application (app) and websites are well known. It also contributes to increasing the volume of crowdsourced eyewitness observations that are collected, notably through the publication of rapid non-seismic-wave-based detections, as well as by reaching out to Twitter users who post about felt experiences through individual invitation messages. Although its impact, especially in raising awareness and preparedness is difficult to evaluate, @LastQuake efficiently supports crisis communication after large earthquakes and receives positive feedback from users for satisfying identified information needs of eyewitnesses automatically and in a timely manner. This study shares the experience gained over the last 10 years of operating the bot, presents the impact of users' feedback on empirically driving its evolution, and discusses the ways by which we can move toward a more data-driven assessment of its impact.

Abstract

This paper investigates the tradeoff between energyefficiency (EE) and spectral-efficiency (SE) for full-duplex (FD) enabled cellular networks.We assume that small cell base stations are working in the FD mode while user devices still work in the conventional half-duplex (HD) mode. First, a necessary condition for a FD transceiver to achieve better EE-SE tradeoff than a HD one is derived. Then, we analyze the EE-SE relation of a FD transceiver in the scenario of single pair of users and obtain a closed-form expression. Next, we extend the result into the multiuser scenario and prove that EE is a quasi-concave function of SE in general and develop an optimal algorithm to achieve the maximum EE based on the Lagrange dual method. Abstract

Misinformation spreads fast in times of crises, corroding public trust and causing further harm to already vulnerable communities. In earthquake seismology, the most common misinformation and misleading popular beliefs generally relate to earthquake prediction, earthquake genesis, and potential causal relations between climate, weather and earthquake occurrence. As a public earthquake information and dissemination center, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) has been confronted many times with this issue over the years. In this paper we describe several types of earthquake misinformation that the EMSC had to deal with during the 2018 Mayotte earthquake crisis and the 2021 La Palma seismic swarm. We present frequent misinformation topics such as earthquake predictions seen on our communication channels. Finally, we expose how, based on desk studies and users' surveys, the EMSC has progressively improved its communication strategy and tools to fight earthquake misinformation and restore trust in science. In this paper we elaborate on the observed temporality patterns for earthquake misinformation and the implications this may have to limit the magnitude of the phenomenon. We also discuss the importance of social, psychological and cultural factors in the appearance and therefore in the fight against misinformation. Finally, we emphasize the need to constantly adapt to new platforms, new beliefs, and advances in science to stay relevant and not allow misinformation to take hold.

Abstract

The optimality of the conventional maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE), also known as the Viterbi Algorithm (VA), relies on the assumption that the receiver has perfect knowledge of the channel coefficients or channel state information (CSI). However, in practical situations that fail the assumption, the MLSE method becomes suboptimal and then exhaustive checking is the only way to obtain the ML sequence. At this background, considering directly the ML criterion for partial CSI, we propose a two-phase low-complexity MLSE algorithm, in which the first phase performs the conventional MLSE algorithm in order to retain necessary information for the backward VA performed in the second phase. Simulations show that when the training sequence is moderately long in comparison with the entire data block such as 1/3 of the block, the proposed two-phase MLSE can approach the performance of the optimal exhaustive checking. In a normal case, where the training sequence consumes only 0.14 of the bandwidth, our proposed method still outperforms evidently the conventional MLSE., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures

Rendahnya kesadaran hukum masyarakat terhadap karya cipta sinematografi pada media internet sudah bukan rahasia umum lagi, dan sangat merugikan pemegang hak cipta dan hak terkait terutama terhadap hak ekonomi. Penyebab timbulnya kerugian disebabkan oleh sebagian dari masyarakat lebih memilih menggunakan layanan streaming dan download secara illegal meskipun telah tersedia situs yang menyediakan layanan serupa secara legal. Penelitian ini membahas tentang bagaimana kesadaran hukum masyarakat terhadap karya cipta sinematografi pada media internet setra faktor penyebabnya. Penelitian ini peneliti menggunakan metode penelitian hukum normatif menggunakan pendekatan perundang-undangan, sejarah dan konsep. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui sikap dan peran dari mayarakat terhadap pembajakan film di internet serta faktor penyebabnya. Abstract

International audience; Background The identification of patients at high risk of a disabling disease course would be invaluable in guiding initial therapy in Crohn’s disease (CD). Our objective was to evaluate a combination of clinical, serological, and genetic factors to predict complicated disease course in pediatric-onset CD. Methods Data for pediatric-onset CD patients, diagnosed before 17 years of age between 1988 and 2004 and followed more than 5 years, were extracted from the population-based EPIMAD registry. The main outcome was defined by the occurrence of complicated behavior (stricturing or penetrating) and/or intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. Lasso logistic regression models were used to build a predictive model based on clinical data at diagnosis, serological data (ASCA, pANCA, anti-OmpC, anti-Cbir1, anti-Fla2, anti-Flax), and 369 candidate single nucleotide polymorphisms. Results In total, 156 children with an inflammatory (B1) disease at diagnosis were included. Among them, 35% (n = 54) progressed to a complicated behavior or an intestinal resection within the 5 years following diagnosis. The best predictive model (PREDICT-EPIMAD) included the location at diagnosis, pANCA, and 6 single nucleotide polymorphisms. This model showed good discrimination and good calibration, with an area under the curve of 0.80 after correction for optimism bias (sensitivity, 79%, specificity, 74%, positive predictive value, 61%, negative predictive value, 87%). Decision curve analysis confirmed the clinical utility of the model. Conclusions A combination of clinical, serotypic, and genotypic variables can predict disease progression in this population-based pediatric-onset CD cohort. Independent validation is needed before it can be used in clinical practice.

Abstract

Recently, mobile operators have been shifting to an intelligent autonomous network paradigm, where the mobile networks are automated in a plug-and-play manner to reduce the manual intervention. Under this circumstance, serious inter-cell interference becomes inevitable which may severely deteriorate system throughput performance and users’ quality of service (QoS), especially for dense residential small base station (SBS) deployment. This paper proposes an intelligent inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) scheme for autonomous heterogeneous networks (HetNets), where the SBSs agilely schedule sub-channels to individual users at each Transmit Time Interval (TTI) with aim of mitigating interferences and maximizing long-term throughput by sensing the environment. Since the reward function is inexplicit and only few samples can be used for prior-training, we formulate the ICIC problem as a distributed inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) problem following the POMDP games. We propose a non-prior knowledge based self-imitating learning (SIL) algorithm which incorporates Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks (WGANs) and Double Deep Q Network (Double DQN) algorithms for performing behavior imitation and few-shot learning in solving the IRL problem from both the policy and value . Numerical results reveal that SIL is able to implement TTI level’s decision-making to solve the ICIC problem, and the overall network throughput of SIL can be improved by up to 19.8% when compared with other known benchmark algorithms.

Abstract

Rhepang Muaif is one of the villages in the Nimbokrang District, Jayapura. The aim of the activity was to eksplore and collect data of medicinal herbs from Isyo Hill’s Rhepang Muaif forest. Data showed that there were 28 plant species used traditionally by Isyo Hill’s people. Among them, 7 plants usually use to to cure cut, 21 other plants use to cure toothache, tumor, gallblade, uric acid, lung disease, headache, fever, malaria, rheumatic, to make the body slim and to improve stamina. Abstract

LEMTA - UMR 7563 CNRS-UL - Universite de Lorraine, Nancy, FranceGravity currents [Ungarish, 2009] are common finescale structures in coastal areas, where they are involved in the vertical transport of physical and biogeological tracers. These stratified flows frequently carry a suspended solid phase that controls the average properties of the flow, such as the geometry, velocity and apparent viscosity leading to a rich dynamic whose optimization/prediction remains a major scientific issue.A better understanding of the particle-flow coupling requires an accurate characterization of the particle volume fraction, fluid density, velocity and pressure fields. The experimental apparatus available at LEMTA allows high accuracy instantaneous measurements of density fields in laboratory experiments with the light attenuation technique (LAT) as described in a companion presentation, while the joint measurement of velocity and pressure fields remains beyond the reach of known metrological techniques.To address this issue we propose an original approach based on the Physics Informed Neural Network (PINN) technique [Raissi 2020], which extracts the complete hydrodynamic variable set from the sole observation of the density field. The accuracy of this approach is evaluated against the well-documented test case of the lock-exchange configuration in both laminar and turbulent regimes. As a validation step, the PINN technique is applied on numerical simulations outputs with the well-established Nek5000 flow solver with convincing results. Then, an application on experimental data from LAT experiments will be shown, illustrating the robustness of this promising paradigm.

43. Particle Laden Gravity Currents dynamics in highconcentration regimes

Abstract

The dynamics ofthese stratified flow is largely related to the properties of the suspended particles, such as their geometry, concentration, and particles size. While severalstudies have focused on low concentration regimes (e.g. [1]), the physical mechanisms controlled by particle size and concentration are largely unknown forvolume fraction larger than 2 %.In order to investigate how the dynamics of PLGC is influenced by particleconcentration and particle size in high concentration regimes, we study the impact of different particle sizes ranging from 6µm to 85µm.The experimental lock-release device is composed of a tilted tank at a controlled angle in which a particle loaded fluid is released on an environment witha controlled density. A particular focus is put on hypopycnal freshwater currents with high concentration suspended particles advancing through a heavierenvironment. We follow the progress of the current with a high frequency CCDcamera. Quantitative data can then be determined using optical methods suchas Light Attenuation Technique which is extended to multiphase flows.Different flow regimes are observed depending on the concentration range andparticle size. These regimes highlight the competition between advective transport controlled by density difference and convective sedimentation. Indeed fourmechanisms are observed in these regimes, respectively horizontal advection atthe surface, sedimentation, advection parallel to the tank bottom, and particlerise of due to buoyancy effects of the surrounding fluid.References[1] Bruce R. Abstract

Parental predisposition to education extends beyond the engagement with schools to the home life, and the expectations of values for education that are communicated directly or indirectly to children. The objective of this study is to assess the influence of parental predispositions to education on female enrolment in Engineering and Technology programmes in the Anglo-Saxon state universities of Cameroon. The study used an explanatory sequential mixed method research design, and a multi-stage sampling technique was used to randomly select 276 respondents from the universities of Bamenda and Buea. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and interview schedules with 10 parents whose children are admitted to engineering and technology programs in these English-speaking state universities. Content analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data.
