Collection of genotype data in case-control genetic association studies may often be incomplete for reasons related to genes themselves. This non-ignorable missingness structure, if not appropriately accounted for, can result in participation bias in association analyses. To deal with this issue, Chen et al. (2016) proposed to collect additional genetic information from family members of individuals whose genotype data were not available, and developed a maximum likelihood method for bias correction. In this study, we develop an estimating equation approach to analyzing data collected from this design that allows adjustment of covariates. It jointly estimates odds ratio parameters for genetic association and missingness, where a logistic regression model is used to relate missingness to genotype and other covariates. Our method allows correlation between genotype and covariates while using genetic information from family members to provide information on the missing genotype data. In the estimating equation for genetic association parameters, we weight the contribution of each genotyped subject to the empirical likelihood score function by the inverse probability that the genotype data are available. We evaluate large and finite sample performance of our method via simulation studies and apply it to a family-based case-control study of breast cancer.

A bio-inspired Neuron-ADC with reconfigurable sampling and static power reduction for biomedical applications is proposed in this work. The Neuron-ADC leverages level-crossing sampling and a bio-inspired refractory circuit to compressively converts bio-signal to digital spikes and information-of-interest. The proposed design can not only avoid dissipating ADC energy on unnecessary data but also achieve reconfigurable sampling, making it appropriate for either low power operation or high accuracy conversion when dealing with various kinds of bio-signals. Moreover, the proposed dynamic comparator can reduce static power up to 41.1% when tested with a 10 kHz sinusoidal input. There is a considerable literature in case-control logistic regression on whether or not non-confounding covariates should be adjusted for. However, only limited and ad hoc theoretical results are available on this important topic. A constrained maximum likelihood method was recently proposed, which appears to be generally more powerful than logistic regression methods with or without adjusting for non-confounding covariates. This note provides a theoretical clarification for the case-control logistic regression with and without covariate adjustment and the constrained maximum likelihood method on their relative performances in terms of asymptotic relative efficiencies. We show that the benefit of covariate adjustment in the case-control logistic regression depends on the disease prevalence. We also show that the constrained maximum likelihood estimator gives an asymptotically uniformly most powerful test.

Parental origin effects play an important role in mammal development and disorder. Case-control mother-child pair genotype data can be used to detect parental origin effects and is often convenient to collect in practice. Most existing methods for assessing parental origin effects do not incorporate any covariates, which may be required to control for confounding factors. We propose to model the parental origin effects through a logistic regression model, with predictors including maternal and child genotypes, parental origins, and covariates. The parental origins may not be fully inferred from genotypes of a target genetic marker, so we propose to use genotypes of markers tightly linked to the target marker to increase inference efficiency. A computationally robust statistical inference procedure is developed based on a modified profile likelihood in a retrospective way. A computationally feasible expectation-maximization algorithm is devised to estimate all unknown parameters involved in the modified profile likelihood. This algorithm differs from the conventional expectation-maximization algorithm in the sense that it is based on a modified instead of the original profile likelihood function. The convergence of the algorithm is established under some mild regularity conditions. This expectation-maximization algorithm also allows convenient handling of missing child genotypes. Large sample properties, including weak consistency, asymptotic normality, and asymptotic efficiency, are established for the proposed estimator under some mild regularity conditions. Finite sample properties are evaluated through extensive simulation studies and the application to a real dataset.

Recent years have seen fast advances in neural recording circuits and systems as they offer a promising way to investigate real-time brain monitoring and the closed-loop modulation of psychological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. In this context, this tutorial brief presents a concise overview of concepts and design methodologies of neural recording, highlighting neural signal characteristics, system-level specifications and architectures, circuit-level implementation, and noise reduction techniques. Wearable electrocardiograph (ECG) recording and processing systems have been developed to detect cardiac arrhythmia to help prevent heart attacks. Conventional wearable systems, however, suffer from high energy consumption at both circuit and system levels. To overcome the design challenges, this paper proposes an event-driven compressive ECG recording and neuromorphic processing system for cardiac arrhythmia detection. The proposed system achieves low power consumption and high arrhythmia detection accuracy via system level co-design with spike-based information representation. Event-driven level-crossing ADC (LC-ADC) is exploited in the recording system, which utilizes the sparsity of ECG signal to enable compressive recording and save ADC energy during the silent signal period. Meanwhile, the proposed spiking convolutional neural network (SCNN) based neuromorphic arrhythmia detection method is inherently compatible with the spike-based output of LC-ADC, hence realizing accurate detection and low energy consumption at system level. Simulation results show that the proposed system with 5-bit LC-ADC achieves 88.6\% reduction of sampled data points compared with Nyquist sampling in the MIT-BIH dataset, and 93.59\% arrhythmia detection accuracy with SCNN, demonstrating the compression ability of LC-ADC and the effectiveness of system level co-design with SCNN., Comment: Accepted in The IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), May 2022

Human silhouette segmentation, which is originally defined in computer vision, has achieved promising results for understanding human activities. However, the physical limitation makes existing systems based on optical cameras suffer from severe performance degradation under low illumination, smoke, and/or opaque obstruction conditions. To overcome such limitations, in this paper, we propose to utilize the radio signals, which can traverse obstacles and are unaffected by the lighting conditions to achieve silhouette segmentation. The proposed RFMask framework is composed of three modules. It first transforms RF signals captured by millimeter wave radar on two planes into spatial domain and suppress interference with the signal processing module. Then, it locates human reflections on RF frames and extract features from surrounding signals with human detection module. Finally, the extracted features from RF frames are aggregated with an attention based mask generation module. To verify our proposed framework, we collect a dataset containing 804,760 radio frames and 402,380 camera frames with human activities under various scenes. Experimental results show that the proposed framework can achieve impressive human silhouette segmentation even under the challenging scenarios(such as low light and occlusion scenarios) where traditional optical-camera-based methods fail. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation towards segmenting human silhouette based on millimeter wave signals. We hope that our work can serve as a baseline and inspire further research that perform vision tasks with radio signals. The dataset and codes will be made in public.

The past years have witnessed increasing research interest in achieving passive human localization with commodity WiFi devices. However, due to the fundamental limited spatial resolution of WiFi signals, it is still very difficult to achieve accurate localization with existing commodity WiFi devices. To tackle this problem, in this paper, we propose to exploit the degree of freedom provided by the Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS), which is composed of a large number of controllable reflective elements, to modulate the spatial distribution of WiFi signals and thus break down the spatial resolution limitation of WiFi signals to achieve accurate localization. Specifically, in the single-person scenario, we derive the closed-form solution to optimally control the phase shift of the IRS elements. In the multi-person scenario, we propose a Side-lobe Cancellation Algorithm to eliminate the near-far effect to achieve accurate localization of multiple persons in an iterative manner. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that without any change to the existing WiFi infrastructure, the proposed framework can locate multiple moving persons passively with sub-centimeter accuracy under multipath interference and random noise.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) has always been an important biomedical test to diagnose cardiovascular diseases. Current approaches for ECG monitoring are based on body attached electrodes leading to uncomfortable user experience. Therefore, contactless ECG monitoring has drawn tremendous attention, which however remains unsolved. In fact, cardiac electrical-mechanical activities are coupling in a well-coordinated pattern. In this paper, we achieve contactless ECG monitoring by breaking the boundary between the cardiac mechanical and electrical activity. Specifically, we develop a millimeter-wave radar system to contactlessly measure cardiac mechanical activity and reconstruct ECG without any contact in. To measure the cardiac mechanical activity comprehensively, we propose a series of signal processing algorithms to extract 4D cardiac motions from radio frequency (RF) signals. Furthermore, we design a deep neural network to solve the cardiac related domain transformation problem and achieve end-to-end reconstruction mapping from RF input to the ECG output. The experimental results show that our contactless ECG measurements achieve timing accuracy of cardiac electrical events with median error below 14ms and morphology accuracy with median Pearson-Correlation of 90% and median Root-Mean-Square-Error of 0.081mv compared to the groudtruth ECG. These results indicate that the system enables the potential of contactless, continuous and accurate ECG monitoring.

Human gesture recognition using millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals provides attractive applications including smart home and in-car interfaces. While existing works achieve promising performance under controlled settings, practical applications are still limited due to the need of intensive data collection, extra training efforts when adapting to new domains, and poor performance for real-time recognition. In this paper, we propose DI-Gesture, a domain-independent and real-time mmWave gesture recognition system. Specifically, we first derive signal variations corresponding to human gestures with spatial-temporal processing. To enhance the robustness of the system and reduce data collecting efforts, we design a data augmentation framework for mmWave signals based on correlations between signal patterns and gesture variations. Furthermore, a spatial-temporal gesture segmentation algorithm is employed for real-time recognition. Extensive experimental results show DI-Gesture achieves an average accuracy of 97.92\%, 99.18\%, and 98.76\% for new users, environments, and locations, respectively. We also evaluate DI-Gesture in challenging scenarios like real-time recognition and sensing at extreme angles, all of which demonstrate the superior robustness and effectiveness of our system., Comment: This paper has been accepted by IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing (2022)

Labeling patients in electronic health records with respect to their statuses of having a disease or condition, i.e. case or control statuses, has increasingly relied on prediction models using high-dimensional variables derived from structured and unstructured electronic health record data. A major hurdle currently is a lack of valid statistical inference methods for the case probability. In this paper, considering high-dimensional sparse logistic regression models for prediction, we propose a novel bias-corrected estimator for the case probability through the development of linearization and variance enhancement techniques. We establish asymptotic normality of the proposed estimator for any loading vector in high dimensions. We construct a confidence interval for the case probability and propose a hypothesis testing procedure for patient case-control labelling. We demonstrate the proposed method via extensive simulation studies and application to real-world electronic health record data.

Interfaces between the perovskite active layer and the charge-transport layers (CTLs) play a critical role in both efficiency and stability of halide-perovskite photovoltaics. One of the major concerns is that surface defects of perovskite could cause detrimental nonradiative recombination and material degradation. In this work, we addressed this challenging problem by inserting ultrathin alkali-fluoride (AF) films between the tri-cation lead-iodide perovskite layer and both CTLs. This bilateral inorganic walls strategy makes use of both physical-blocking and chemical-anchoring functionalities of the continuous, uniform and compact AF framework: on the one hand, the uniformly distributed alkali-iodine coordination at the perovskite-AF interfaces effectively suppresses the formation of iodine-vacancy defects at the surfaces and grain boundaries of the whole perovskite film, thus reducing the trap-assisted recombination at the perovskite-CTL interfaces and therewith the open-voltage loss; on the other hand, the impermeable AF buffer layers effectively prevent the bidirectional ion migration at the perovskite-CTLs interfaces even under harsh working conditions. As a result, a power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.02% (certified efficiency 20.4%) with low open-voltage deficit (< 0.4V) was achieved for the low-temperature processed inverted planar perovskite solar cells. Exceptional operational stability (500 h, ISOS-L-2) and thermal stability (1000 h, ISOS-D-2) were obtained. Meanwhile, a 35.7% PCE was obtained under dim-light source (1000 lux white LED light) with the optimized device, which is among the best records in perovskite indoor photovoltaics.

Building phenotype models using electronic health record (EHR) data conventionally requires manually labeled cases and controls. Assigning labels is labor intensive and, for some phenotypes, identifying gold-standard controls is prohibitive. To facilitate comprehensive clinical decision support and research, we sought to develop an accurate EHR phenotyping approach that assesses its performance without a validation set. Our framework relies on specifying a random subset of cases, potentially using an anchor variable that has excellent positive predictive value and sensitivity that is independent of predictors. We developed a novel maximum likelihood approach that efficiently leverages data from anchor-positive and unlabeled patients to develop logistic regression phenotyping models. Additionally, we described novel statistical methods for estimating phenotyping prevalence and assessing model calibration and predictive performance measures. Theoretical and simulation studies indicated our method generates accurate predicted probabilities, leading to excellent discrimination and calibration, and consistent estimates of phenotype prevalence and anchor sensitivity. The method appeared robust to minor lack-of-fit and the proposed calibration assessment detected major lack-of-fit. We applied our method to EHR data to develop a preliminary model for identifying patients with primary aldosteronism, which achieved an AUC of 0.99 and PPV of 0.8. We developed novel statistical methods for accurate model development and validation with minimal manual labeling, facilitating development of scalable, transferable, semi-automated case labeling and practice-specific models. Our EHR phenotyping approach decreases labor-intensive manual phenotyping and annotation, which should enable broader model development and dissemination for EHR clinical decision support and research.
