Establishing a fully functional quantum internet relies on the efficient allocation of multipartite entangled states, which enables advanced quantum communication protocols, secure multipartite quantum key distribution, and distributed quantum computing. In this work, we propose local operations and classical communication (LOCC) protocols for allocating generalized $N$-qubit W states within a centralized hub architecture, where the central hub node preshares Bell states with each end node. We develop a detailed analysis of the optimality of the resources required for our proposed W-state allocation protocol and the previously proposed GHZ-state protocol. Our results show that these protocols deterministically and exactly distribute states using only $N$ qubits of quantum memory within the central system, with communication costs of $2N - 2$ and $N$ classical bits for the W and GHZ states, respectively. These resource-efficient LOCC protocols are further proven to be optimal within the centralized hub architecture, outperforming conventional teleportation protocols for entanglement distribution in both memory and communication costs. Our results provide a more resource-efficient method for allocating essential multipartite entangled states in quantum networks, paving the way for the realization of a quantum internet with enhanced efficiency.

Unraveling the secrets of how much nonstabilizerness a quantum dynamic can generate is crucial for harnessing the power of magic states, the essential resources for achieving quantum advantage and realizing fault-tolerant quantum computation. In this work, we introduce the amortized $\alpha$-stabilizer R\'enyi entropy, a magic monotone for unitary operations that quantifies the nonstabilizerness generation capability of quantum dynamics. Amortization is key in quantifying the magic of quantum dynamics, as we reveal that nonstabilizerness generation can be enhanced by prior nonstabilizerness in input states when considering the $\alpha$-stabilizer R\'enyi entropy, while this is not the case for robustness of magic or stabilizer extent. We demonstrate the versatility of the amortized $\alpha$-stabilizer R\'enyi entropy in investigating the nonstabilizerness resources of quantum dynamics of computational and fundamental interest. In particular, we establish improved lower bounds on the $T$-count of quantum Fourier transforms and the quantum evolutions of one-dimensional Heisenberg Hamiltonians, showcasing the power of this tool in studying quantum advantages and the corresponding cost in fault-tolerant quantum computation., Comment: 5 + 7 pages, 2 figures

Magic states are essential for achieving universal quantum computation. This study introduces a reversible framework for the manipulation of magic states in odd dimensions, delineating a necessary and sufficient condition for the exact transformations between magic states under maps that preserve the trace of states and positivity of discrete Wigner representation. Utilizing the stochastic formalism, we demonstrate that magic mana emerges as the unique measure for such reversible magic state transformations. We propose the concept of physical implementability for characterizing the hardness and cost of maintaining reversibility. Our findings show that, analogous to the entanglement theory, going beyond the positivity constraint enables an exact reversible theory of magic manipulation, thereby hinting at a potential incongruity between the reversibility of quantum resources and the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. Long baseline diffraction-limited optical aperture synthesis technology by interferometry plays an important role in scientific study and practical application. In contrast to amplitude (phase) interferometry, intensity interferometry -- which exploits the quantum nature of light to measure the photon bunching effect in thermal light -- is robust against atmospheric turbulence and optical defects. However, a thermal light source typically has a significant divergence angle and a low average photon number per mode, forestalling the applicability over long ranges. Here, we propose and demonstrate active intensity interferometry for super-resolution imaging over the kilometer range. Our scheme exploits phase-independent multiple laser emitters to produce the thermal illumination and uses an elaborate computational algorithm to reconstruct the image. In outdoor environments, we image two-dimension millimeter-level targets over 1.36 kilometers at a resolution of 14 times the diffraction limit of a single telescope. Quantum state purification is crucial in quantum communication and computation, aiming to recover a purified state from multiple copies of an unknown noisy state. This work introduces a general state purification framework designed to achieve the highest fidelity with a specified probability and characterize the associated trade-offs. For i.i.d. quantum states under depolarizing noise, our framework can replicate the purification protocol proposed by [Barenco et al., SIAM Journal on Computing, 26(5), 1997] and further provide exact formulas for the purification fidelity and probability with explicit trade-offs. We prove the protocols' optimality for two copies of noisy states with any dimension and confirm its optimality for higher numbers of copies and dimensions through numerical analysis. Our methodological approach paves the way for proving the protocol's optimality in more general scenarios and leads to optimal protocols for other noise models. Furthermore, we present a systematic implementation method via block encoding and parameterized quantum circuits, providing explicit circuits for purifying three-copy and four-copy states under depolarizing noise. We introduce the Quantum Unitary Reversal Algorithm (QURA), a deterministic and exact approach to universally reverse arbitrary unknown unitary transformations using $\mathcal{O}(d^2)$ calls of the unitary, where $d$ is the system dimension. Our construction resolves a fundamental problem of time-reversal simulations for closed quantum systems by affirming the feasibility of reversing any unitary evolution without knowing the exact process. The algorithm also provides the construction of a key oracle for unitary inversion in quantum algorithm frameworks such as quantum singular value transformation. Notably, our work demonstrates that compared with classical methods relying on process tomography, reversing an unknown unitary on a quantum computer holds a quadratic quantum advantage in computation complexity. Quantum comb is an essential tool for characterizing complex quantum protocols in quantum information processing. In this work, we introduce PQComb, a framework leveraging parameterized quantum circuits to explore the capabilities of quantum combs for general quantum process transformation tasks and beyond. By optimizing PQComb for time-reversal simulations of unknown unitary evolutions, we develop a simpler protocol for unknown qubit unitary inversion that reduces the ancilla qubit overhead from 6 to 3 compared to the existing method in [Yoshida, Soeda, Murao, PRL 131, 120602, 2023]. This demonstrates the utility of quantum comb structures and showcases PQComb's potential for solving complex quantum tasks. The fermionic Hubbard model (FHM)[1], despite its simple form, captures essential features of strongly correlated electron physics. Ultracold fermions in optical lattices[2, 3] provide a clean and well-controlled platform for simulating FHM. Doping its antiferromagnetic ground state at half filling, various exotic phases are expected to arise in the FHM simulator, including stripe order[4], pseudogap[5], and d-wave superconductors[6], offering valuable insights into high-temperature superconductivity[7{9]. Although notable progress, such as the observation of antiferromagnetic correlations over short[10] and extended distances[11], has been obtained, the antiferromagnetic phase has yet to be realized due to the significant challenges of achieving low temperatures in a large and uniform quantum simulator. Here, we report the observation of the antiferromagnetic phase transition in a three-dimensional fermionic Hubbard system comprising lithium-6 atoms in a uniform optical lattice with approximately 800,000 sites. When the interaction strength, temperature, and doping concentration are finely tuned to approach their respective critical values, sharp increases in the spin structure factor (SSF) are observed. These observations can be well described by a power-law divergence, with a critical exponent of 1.396 from the Heisenberg universality class[12]. At half filling and with optimal interaction strength, the measured SSF reaches 123(8), signifying the establishment of an antiferromagnetic phase. Our results set the stage for exploring the low-temperature phase diagram of FHM.

The inherent irreversibility of quantum dynamics for open systems poses a significant barrier to the inversion of unknown quantum processes. To tackle this challenge, we propose the framework of virtual combs that exploit the unknown process iteratively with additional classical post-processing to simulate the process inverse. Notably, we demonstrate that an $n$-slot virtual comb can exactly reverse a depolarizing channel with one unknown noise parameter out of $n+1$ potential candidates, and a 1-slot virtual comb can exactly reverse an arbitrary pair of quantum channels. We further explore the approximate inversion of an unknown channel within a given channel set. A worst-case error decay of $\mathcal{O}(n^{-1})$ is unveiled for depolarizing channels within a specified noise region. We introduce a reversible theory of exact entanglement manipulation by establishing a necessary and sufficient condition for state transfer under trace-preserving transformations that completely preserve the positivity of partial transpose (PPT). Under these free transformations, we show that logarithmic negativity emerges as the pivotal entanglement measure for determining entangled states' transformations, analogous to the role of entropy in the second law of thermodynamics. Previous results have proven that entanglement is irreversible under quantum operations that completely preserve PPT and leave open the question of reversibility for quantum operations that do not generate entanglement asymptotically. However, we find that going beyond the complete positivity constraint imposed by standard quantum mechanics enables a reversible theory of exact entanglement manipulation, which may suggest a potential incompatibility between the reversibility of entanglement and the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics., Comment: 14 pages including appendix

Quantum Markov chains generalize classical Markov chains for random variables to the quantum realm and exhibit unique inherent properties, making them an important feature in quantum information theory. In this work, we propose the concept of virtual quantum Markov chains (VQMCs), focusing on scenarios where subsystems retain classical information about global systems from measurement statistics. As a generalization of quantum Markov chains, VQMCs characterize states where arbitrary global shadow information can be recovered from subsystems through local quantum operations and measurements. We present an algebraic characterization for virtual quantum Markov chains and show that the virtual quantum recovery is fully determined by the block matrices of a quantum state on its subsystems. Notably, we find a distinction between two classes of tripartite entanglement by showing that the W state is a VQMC while the GHZ state is not. Furthermore, we establish semidefinite programs to determine the optimal sampling overhead and the robustness of virtual quantum Markov chains. We demonstrate the optimal sampling overhead is additive, indicating no free lunch to further reduce the sampling cost of recovery from parallel calls of the VQMC states. The nature of pseudogap lies at the heart of strongly-interacting superconductivity and superfluidity. With known pairing interactions, unitary Fermi gases provide an ideal testbed to verify whether a pseudogap can arise from many-body pairing. Here we report the observation of the long-sought pair-fluctuation-driven pseudogap in homogeneous unitary Fermi gases of lithium-6 atoms, by precisely measuring the spectral function through momentum-resolved microwave spectroscopy without the serious effects of final-state effect. We find a large pseudogap above the superfluid transition. The inverse pair lifetime exhibits a thermally-activated exponential behavior, uncovering the microscopic virtual pair breaking and recombination mechanism. The obtained large, T-independent single-particle scattering rate is comparable with that set by the Planckian limit. Our findings quantitatively characterize the pseudogap in strongly-interacting Fermi gases, highlighting the role of preformed pairing as a precursor to superfluidity.

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. Accurately estimating high-order moments of quantum states is an elementary precondition for many crucial tasks in quantum computing, such as entanglement spectroscopy, entropy estimation, spectrum estimation, and predicting non-linear features from quantum states. But in reality, inevitable quantum noise prevents us from accessing the desired value. In this paper, we address this issue by systematically analyzing the feasibility and efficiency of extracting high-order moments from noisy states. We first show that there exists a quantum protocol capable of accomplishing this task if and only if the underlying noise channel is invertible. We then establish a method for deriving protocols that attain optimal sample complexity using quantum operations and classical post-processing only. Our protocols, in contrast to conventional ones, incur lower overheads and avoid sampling different quantum operations due to a novel technique called observable shift, making the protocols strong candidates for practical usage on current quantum devices. The proposed method also indicates the power of entangled protocols in retrieving high-order information, whereas in the existing methods, entanglement does not help. We further construct the protocol for large quantum systems to retrieve the depolarizing channels, making the proposed method scalable. In the past two decades, quantum key distribution networks based on telecom fibers have been implemented on metropolitan and intercity scales. One of the bottlenecks lies in the exponential decay of the key rate with respect to the transmission distance. Recently proposed schemes mainly focus on achieving longer distances by creating a long-arm single-photon interferometer over two communication parties. Despite their advantageous performance over long communication distances, the requirement of phase-locking between two independent lasers is technically challenging. By adopting the recently-proposed mode-pairing idea, we realize high-performance quantum key distribution without global phase-locking. Using two independent off-the-shelf lasers, we show a quadratic key-rate improvement over the conventional measurement-device-independent schemes in the regime of metropolitan and intercity distances. For longer distances, we also boost the key rate performance by three orders of magnitude via 304 km commercial fiber and 407 km ultra-low-loss fiber. Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses the fundamental principles of quantum mechanics to share unconditionally secure keys between distant users. Previous works based on the quantum science satellite "Micius" have initially demonstrated the feasibility of a global QKD network. However, the practical applications of space-based QKD still face many technical problems, such as the huge size and weight of ground stations required to receive quantum signals. Here, we report space-to-ground QKD demonstrations based on portable receiving ground stations. The weight of the portable ground station is less than 100 kg, the space required is less than 1 m$^{3}$ and the installation time requires no more than 12 hours, all of the weight, required space and deployment time are about two orders of magnitude lower than those for the previous systems. Moreover, the equipment is easy to handle and can be placed on the roof of buildings in a metropolis. Secure keys have been successfully generated from the "Micius" satellite to these portable ground stations at six different places in China, and an average final secure key length is around 50 kb can be obtained during one passage. Our results pave the way for, and greatly accelerate the practical application of, space-based QKD.

The all-photonic quantum repeater (APQR) is a promising repeater scheme to realize long-distance quantum communication. For a practical APQR, an indispensable requirement is the robustness of the repeater graph state (RGS) against photon loss. We propose a new loss-tolerant scheme by applying the generalized Shor code to RGS, which can be experimentally demonstrated with current technology. Experimentally, we first prepare and verify the nine-qubit Shor code. Then, by applying the generalized Shor code to APQR and preparing a simplified encoded RGS with the structure of $1\times2$ based on the Shor code state, the effectiveness of our loss-tolerant scheme and the loss tolerance of the encoded RGS are respectively verified. The recognition of entanglement states is a notoriously difficult problem when no prior information is available. Here, we propose an efficient quantum adversarial bipartite entanglement detection scheme to address this issue. Our proposal reformulates the bipartite entanglement detection as a two-player zero-sum game completed by parameterized quantum circuits, where a two-outcome measurement can be used to query a classical binary result about whether the input state is bipartite entangled or not. In principle, for an $N$-qubit quantum state, the runtime complexity of our proposal is $O(\text{poly}(N)T)$ with $T$ being the number of iterations. We experimentally implement our protocol on a linear optical network and exhibit its effectiveness to accomplish the bipartite entanglement detection for 5-qubit quantum pure states and 2-qubit quantum mixed states. We summarize the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Quantum gates and measurements on quantum hardware are inevitably subject to hardware imperfections that lead to quantum errors. Mitigating such unavoidable errors is crucial to explore the power of quantum hardware better. In this paper, we propose a unified framework that can mitigate quantum gate and measurement errors in computing quantum expectation values utilizing the truncated Neumann series. The essential idea is to cancel the effect of quantum error by approximating its inverse via linearly combining quantum errors of different orders produced by sequential applications of the quantum devices with carefully chosen coefficients. Remarkably, the estimation error decays exponentially in the truncated order, and the incurred error mitigation overhead is independent of the system size, as long as the noise resistance of the quantum device is moderate. We numerically test this framework for different quantum errors and find that the computation accuracy is substantially improved. Our framework possesses several vital advantages: it mitigates quantum gate and measurement errors in a unified manner, it neither assumes any error structure nor requires the tomography procedure to completely characterize the quantum errors, and most importantly, it is scalable. Measurements on near-term quantum processors are inevitably subject to hardware imperfections that lead to readout errors. Mitigation of such unavoidable errors is crucial to better explore and extend the power of near-term quantum hardware. In this work, we propose a method to mitigate measurement errors in computing quantum expectation values using the truncated Neumann series. The essential idea is to cancel the errors by combining various noisy expectation values generated by sequential measurements determined by terms in the truncated series. We numerically test this method and find that the computation accuracy is substantially improved. Our method possesses several advantages: it does not assume any noise structure, it does not require the calibration procedure to learn the noise matrix a prior, and most importantly, the incurred error mitigation overhead is independent of system size, as long as the noise resistance of the measurement device is moderate. Distributed quantum metrology can enhance the sensitivity for sensing spatially distributed parameters beyond the classical limits. Here we demonstrate distributed quantum phase estimation with discrete variables to achieve Heisenberg limit phase measurements. Based on parallel entanglement in modes and particles, we demonstrate distributed quantum sensing for both individual phase shifts and an averaged phase shift, with an error reduction up to 1.4 dB and 2.7 dB below the shot-noise limit. Furthermore, we demonstrate a combined strategy with parallel mode entanglement and multiple passes of the phase shifter in each mode. In particular, our experiment uses six entangled photons with each photon passing the phase shifter up to six times, and achieves a total number of photon passes N=21 at an error reduction up to 4.7 dB below the shot-noise limit. Interferometers are widely used in imaging technologies to achieve enhanced spatial resolution, but require that the incoming photons be indistinguishable. In previous work, we built and analyzed color erasure detectors which expand the scope of intensity interferometry to accommodate sources of different colors. Here we experimentally demonstrate how color erasure detectors can achieve improved spatial resolution in an imaging task, well beyond the diffraction limit. Utilizing two 10.9 mm-aperture telescopes and a 0.8 m baseline, we measure the distance between a 1063.6 nm source and a 1064.4 nm source separated by 4.2 mm at a distance of 1.43 km, which surpasses the diffraction limit of a single telescope by about 40 times. Moreover, chromatic intensity interferometry allows us to recover the phase of the Fourier transform of the imaged objects - a quantity that is, in the presence of modest noise, inaccessible to conventional intensity interferometry., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Silicon single-photon detectors (SPDs) are key devices for detecting single photons in the visible wavelength range. Photon detection efficiency (PDE) is one of the most important parameters of silicon SPDs, and increasing PDE is highly required for many applications. Here, we present a practical approach to increase PDE of silicon SPD with a monolithic integrated circuit of active quenching and active reset (AQAR). The AQAR integrated circuit is specifically designed for thick silicon single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) with high breakdown voltage (250-450 V), and then fabricated via the process of high-voltage 0.35-$\mu$m bipolarCMOS-DMOS. The AQAR integrated circuit implements the maximum transition voltage of ~ 68 V with 30 ns quenching time and 10 ns reset time, which can easily boost PDE to the upper limit by regulating the excess bias up to a high enough level. By using the AQAR integrated circuit, we design and characterize two SPDs with the SPADs disassembled from commercial products of single-photon counting modules (SPCMs). Compared with the original SPCMs, the PDE values are increased from 68.3% to 73.7% and 69.5% to 75.1% at 785 nm, respectively, with moderate increases of dark count rate and afterpulse probability. Quantum machine learning is expected to be one of the first practical applications of near-term quantum devices. Pioneer theoretical works suggest that quantum generative adversarial networks (GANs) may exhibit a potential exponential advantage over classical GANs, thus attracting widespread attention. However, it remains elusive whether quantum GANs implemented on near-term quantum devices can actually solve real-world learning tasks. Here, we devise a flexible quantum GAN scheme to narrow this knowledge gap, which could accomplish image generation with arbitrarily high-dimensional features, and could also take advantage of quantum superposition to train multiple examples in parallel. For the first time, we experimentally achieve the learning and generation of real-world hand-written digit images on a superconducting quantum processor. Moreover, we utilize a gray-scale bar dataset to exhibit the competitive performance between quantum GANs and the classical GANs based on multilayer perceptron and convolutional neural network architectures, respectively, benchmarked by the Fr\'echet Distance score. By developing a `two-crystal' method for color erasure, we can broaden the scope of chromatic interferometry to include optical photons whose frequency difference falls outside of the 400 nm to 4500 nm wavelength range, which is the passband of a PPLN crystal. High-precision time synchronization for remote clocks plays an important role in fundamental science and real-life applications. However, the current time synchronization techniques have been shown to be vulnerable to sophisticated adversaries. There is a compelling need for fundamentally new methods to distribute high-precision time information securely. Here we propose a satellite-based quantum-secure time transfer (QSTT) scheme based on two-way quantum key distribution (QKD) in free-space, and experimentally verify the key technologies of the scheme via the Micius quantum satellite. In QSTT, a quantum signal (e.g., single photon) is used as the carrier for both the time transfer and the secret-key generation, offering quantum-enhanced security for transferring time signal and time information. We perform a satellite-to-ground time synchronization using single-photon-level signals and achieve a quantum bit error rate of less than 1%, a time data rate of 9 kHz and a time-transfer precision of 30 ps. We report on the realization of a high-power, ultranarrow-linewidth, and frequency-locked 532~nm laser system. The laser system consists of single-pass and intra-cavity second harmonic generation of a continuous-wave Ytterbium doped fiber laser at 1064~nm in the nonlinear crystal of periodically poled lithium niobate and lithium triborate, respectively. With 47~W infrared input, 30~W green laser is generated through the type I critical phase matching in the intracavity lithium triborate crystal. The laser linewidth is measured to be on the order of sub-kHz, which is achieved by simultaneously locking the single-pass frequency doubling output onto the iodine absorption line R69 (36-1) at 532~nm. Furthermore, the phase locking between the laser system and another slave 1064~nm laser is demonstrated with relative frequency tunability being up to 10~GHz. Our results completely satisfy the requirements of 532~nm laser for quantum simulation with ultracold atoms.

We have observed 69 $^{41}$K-$^6$Li interspecies Feshbach resonances including 13 elastic p-wave resonances and 6 broad d-wave resonances of $^{41}$K atoms in different spin-state combinations at fields up to 600~G. Multi-channel quantum defect theory calculation is performed to assign these resonances and the results show perfect agreement with experimental values after improving input parameters. The observed broad p- and d- wave resonances display a full resolved multiplet structure. They may serve as important simulators to nonzero partial wave dominated physics.

Hyperfine-changing collisions are of fundamental interest for the studying of ultracold heteronuclear mixtures. Here, we report the state-to-state study of the hyperfine-changing-collision dynamics in a Bose-Fermi mixture of $^6$Li and $^{41}$K atoms. The collision products are directly observed and the spin-changing dynamics is measured. Based on a two-body collision model, the experimental results are simultaneously fitted from which the spin-changing rate coefficient of $ 1.9(2)\times 10^{-12}~\rm{cm^3\cdot s^{-1}}$ is gained, being consistent with the multi-channel quantum defect theory calculation. We further show that the contact parameter of $^6$Li-$^{41}$K mixture can be extracted from the measured spin-changing dynamics. The obtained results are consistent with the first order perturbation theory in the weakly-interacting limit. Our system offers great promise for studying spin-changing interactions in heteronuclear mixtures.

Quantum resetting protocols allow a quantum system to be sent to a state in the past by making it interact with quantum probes when neither the free evolution of the system nor the interaction is controlled. We experimentally verify the simplest non-trivial case of a quantum resetting protocol, known as the $\mathcal{W}_4$ protocol, with five superconducting qubits, testing it with different types of free evolutions and target-probe interactions. After projection, we obtained a reset state fidelity as high as $0.951$, and the process fidelity was found to be $0.792$. We also implemented 100 randomly-chosen interactions and demonstrated an average success probability of $0.323$ for $|1\rangle$ and $0.292$ for $|-\rangle$, experimentally confirmed the nonzero probability of success for unknown interactions; the numerical simulated values are about $0.3$. Contrary to the usual assumption of at least partial control of quantum dynamics, a surprising recent result proved that an arbitrary quantum state can be probabilistically reset to a state in the past by having it interact with probing systems in a consistent, but $uncontrolled$ way. We present a photonic implementation to achieve this resetting process, experimentally verifying that a state can be probabilistically reset to its past with a fidelity of $0.870\pm0.012$. We further demonstrate the preservation of an entangled state, which still violates a Bell inequality, after half of the entangled pair was reset. Distributing quantum state and entanglement between distant nodes is a crucial task in distributed quantum information processing on large-scale quantum networks. Quantum network coding provides an alternative solution for quantum state distribution especially when the bottleneck problems must be considered and high communication speed is required. Here, we report the first experimental realization of quantum network coding on the butterfly network. With the help of prior entanglements shared between senders, two quantum states can be crossly transmitted perfectly through the butterfly network. We demonstrate this protocol by employing eight photons generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We observe cross-transmission of single-photon states with an average fidelity of $0.9685\pm0.0013$, and that of two-photon entanglement with an average fidelity of $0.9611\pm0.0061$, both of which are greater than the theoretical upper bounds without prior entanglement., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; to appear in npj QI

Quantum repeaters -- important components of a scalable quantum internet -- enable the entanglement to be distributed over long distances. The standard paradigm for a quantum repeater relies on a necessary demanding requirement of quantum memory. Despite significant progress, the limited performance of quantum memory makes practical quantum repeaters still a great challenge. Remarkably, a proposed all-photonic quantum repeater avoids the need for quantum memory by harnessing the graph states in the repeater nodes. Here we perform an experimental demonstration of an all-photonic quantum repeater using linear optics. By manipulating a 12-photon interferometer, we implement a 2-by-2 parallel all-photonic quantum repeater, and observe an 89% enhancement of entanglement-generation rate over the standard parallel entanglement swapping. These results open a new way towards designing repeaters with efficient single-photon sources and photonic graph states, and suggest that the all-photonic scheme represents an alternative path -- parallel to that of matter-memory-based schemes -- towards realizing practical quantum repeaters., Comment: Published online in Nature Photonics

Quantum key distribution (QKD offers a long-term solution to establish information-theoretically secure keys between two distant users. In practice, with a careful characterization of quantum sources and the decoy-state method, measure-device-independent quantum key distribution (MDI-QKD) provides secure key distribution. While short-distance fibre-based QKD has already been available for real-life implementation, the bottleneck of practical QKD lies on the limited transmission distance. Due to photon losses in transmission, it was believed that the key generation rate is bounded by a linear function of the channel transmittance, $O(\eta)$, without a quantum repeater, which puts an upper bound on the maximal secure transmission distance. Interestingly, a new phase-encoding MDI-QKD scheme, named twin-field QKD, has been suggested to beat the linear bound, while another variant, named phase-matching quantum key distribution (PM-QKD), has been proven to have a quadratic key-rate improvement, $O(\sqrt{\eta})$. In reality, however, the intrinsic optical mode mismatch of independent lasers, accompanied by phase fluctuation and drift, impedes the successful experimental implementation of the new schemes. Here, we solve this problem with the assistance of the laser injection technique and the phase post-compensation method. In the experiment, the key rate surpasses the linear key-rate bound via 302 km and 402 km commercial-fibre channels, achieving a key rate over 4 orders of magnitude higher than the existing results in literature. Furthermore, with a 502 km ultralow-loss fibre, our system yields a secret key rate of 0.118 bps. Quantum error correction is an essential ingredient for universal quantum computing. Despite tremendous experimental efforts in the study of quantum error correction, to date, there has been no demonstration in the realisation of universal quantum error correcting code, with the subsequent verification of all key features including the identification of an arbitrary physical error, the capability for transversal manipulation of the logical state, and state decoding. To address this challenge, we experimentally realise the $[\![5,1,3]\!]$ code, the so-called smallest perfect code that permits corrections of generic single-qubit errors. In the experiment, having optimised the encoding circuit, we employ an array of superconducting qubits to realise the $[\![5,1,3]\!]$ code for several typical logical states including the magic state, an indispensable resource for realising non-Clifford gates. The encoded states are prepared with an average fidelity of $57.1(3)\%$ while with a high fidelity of $98.6(1)\%$ in the code space. Then, the arbitrary single-qubit errors introduced manually are identified by measuring the stabilizers. We further implement logical Pauli operations with a fidelity of $97.2(2)\%$ within the code space. Finally, we realise the decoding circuit and recover the input state with an overall fidelity of $74.5(6)\%$, in total with $92$ gates. By engineering and manipulating quantum entanglement between incoming photons and experimental apparatus, we construct single-photon detectors which cannot distinguish between photons of very different wavelengths. These color erasure detectors enable a new kind of intensity interferometry, with potential applications in microscopy and astronomy. Atomic Fermi gases provide an ideal platform for studying the pairing and superfluid physics, using a Feshbach resonance between closed channel molecular states and open channel scattering states. Of particular interest is the strongly interacting regime. We show that the closed-channel fraction $Z_{cc}$ provides an effective probe for the important many-body interacting effects, especially through its density dependence, which is absent from two-body theoretical predictions. Here we measure $Z_{cc}$ as a function of interaction strength and the Fermi temperature $T_\text{F}$ in a trapped $^6$Li superfluid throughout the entire BCS--BEC crossover, in quantitative agreement with theory when important thermal contributions outside the superfluid core are taken into account. Away from the deep BEC regime, the fraction $Z_{cc}$ is sensitive to $T_\text{F}$. In particular, our data show $Z_{cc} \propto T_\text{F}^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha=1/2$ at unitarity, in quantitative agreement with calculations of a two-channel pairing fluctuation theory, and $\alpha$ increases rapidly into the BCS regime, reflecting many-body interaction effects as predicted., Comment: Updated with the final version. Quantum networks illustrate the use of connected nodes of quantum systems as the backbone of distributed quantum information processing. When the network nodes are entangled in graph states, such a quantum platform is indispensable to almost all the existing distributed quantum tasks. Unfortunately, real networks unavoidably suffer from noise and technical restrictions, making nodes transit from quantum to classical at worst. Here, we introduce a figure of merit in terms of the number of classical nodes for quantum networks in arbitrary graph states. Such a network property is revealed by exploiting a novel Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steerability. Experimentally, we demonstrate photonic quantum networks of $n_q$ quantum nodes and $n_c$ classical nodes with $n_q$ up to 6 and $n_c$ up to 18 using spontaneous parametric down-conversion entanglement sources. We show that the proposed method is faithful in quantifying the classical defects in prepared multiphoton quantum networks. Our results provide novel identification of generic quantum networks and nonclassical correlations in graph states.

We report an experimental study of quench dynamics across the superfluid transition temperature $T_c$ in a strongly interacting Fermi gas by ramping down the trapping potential. The nonzero quasi-condensate number $N_0$ at temperature significantly above $T_c$ in the unitary and the BEC regimes reveals the pseudogap physics. Below $T_c$, a rapid growth of $N_0$ is accompanied by spontaneous generation of tens of vortices. We observe a power law scaling of the vortex density versus the quasi-condensate formation time, consistent with the Kibble-Zurek theory. Our work provides an example of studying emerged many-body physics by quench dynamics and paves the way for studying the quantum turbulence in a strongly interacting Fermi gas.

Finding exponential separation between quantum and classical information tasks is like striking gold in quantum information research. Such an advantage is believed to hold for quantum computing but is proven for quantum communication complexity. Recently, a novel quantum resource called the quantum switch---which creates a coherent superposition of the causal order of events, known as quantum causality---has been harnessed theoretically in a new protocol providing provable exponential separation. We experimentally demonstrate such an advantage by realizing a superposition of communication directions for a two-party distributed computation. Our photonic demonstration employs $d$-dimensional quantum systems, qudits, up to $d=2^{13}$ dimensions and demonstrates a communication complexity advantage, requiring less than $(0.696 \pm 0.006)$ times the communication of any causally ordered protocol. These results elucidate the crucial role of the coherence of communication direction in achieving the exponential separation for the one-way processing task, and open a new path for experimentally exploring the fundamentals and applications of advanced features of indefinite causal structures., Comment: Accepted by Phys. Entangled photon sources with simultaneously near-unity heralding efficiency and indistinguishability are the fundamental elements for scalable photonic quantum technologies. We design and realize a degenerate entangled-photon source from an ultrafast pulsed laser pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), which show simultaneously ~97% heralding efficiency and ~96% indistinguishability between independent single photons. Such a high-efficiency and frequency-uncorrelated SPDC source allows generation of the first 12-photon genuine entanglement with a state fidelity of 0.572(24). We further demonstrate a blueprint of scalable scattershot boson sampling using 12 SPDC sources and a 12*12-modes interferometer for three-, four-, and five-boson sampling, which yields count rates more than four orders of magnitudes higher than all previous SPDC experiments. Quantum key distribution (QKD) together with one time pad encoding can provide information-theoretical security for communication. Currently, though QKD has been widely deployed in many metropolitan fiber networks, its implementation in a large scale remains experimentally challenging. The Bell inequality, and its substantial experimental violation, offers a seminal paradigm for showing that the world is not in fact locally realistic. Here, going beyond the scope of Bell's inequality on physical states, we show that quantum teleportation can be used to quantitatively characterize quantum correlations of physical processes. The validity of the proposed formalism is demonstrated by considering the problem of teleportation through a linear three-node quantum network. A hierarchy is derived between the Bell nonlocality, nonbilocality, steering and nonlocality-steering hybrid correlations based on a process fidelity constraint. The proposed framework can be directly extended to reveal the nonlocality structure of teleportation through any linear many-node quantum network. The formalism provides a faithful identification of quantum teleportation and demonstrates the use of quantum-information processing as a means of quantitatively discriminating quantum correlations.

In this paper, we give quantum algorithms for two fundamental computation problems: solving polynomial systems over finite fields and optimization where the arguments of the objective function and constraints take values from a finite field or a bounded interval of integers. The quantum algorithms can solve these problems with any given success probability and have polynomial runtime complexities in the size of the input, the degree of the inequality constraints, and the condition number of certain matrices derived from the problem. So, we achieved exponential speedup for these problems when their condition numbers are small. As applications, quantum algorithms are given to three basic computational problems in cryptography: the polynomial system with noise problem, the short integer solution problem, the shortest vector problem, as well as the cryptanalysis for the lattice based NTRU cryptosystem. It is shown that these problems and NTRU can against quantum computer attacks only if their condition numbers are large, so the condition number could be used as a new criterion for the lattice based post-quantum cryptosystems.

We perform decoy-state quantum key distribution between a low-Earth-orbit satellite and multiple ground stations located in Xinglong, Nanshan, and Graz, which establish satellite-to-ground secure keys with ~kHz rate per passage of the satellite Micius over a ground station. The satellite thus establishes a secure key between itself and, say, Xinglong, and another key between itself and, say, Graz. Then, upon request from the ground command, Micius acts as a trusted relay. It performs bitwise exclusive OR operations between the two keys and relays the result to one of the ground stations. That way, a secret key is created between China and Europe at locations separated by 7600 km on Earth. These keys are then used for intercontinental quantum-secured communication. This was on the one hand the transmission of images in a one-time pad configuration from China to Austria as well as from Austria to China. Also, a videoconference was performed between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which also included a 280 km optical ground connection between Xinglong and Beijing. Our work points towards an efficient solution for an ultralong-distance global quantum network, laying the groundwork for a future quantum internet.
