2. Re-Presenting Subversive Songs: Applying Strategies for Invention and Arrangement to Nontraditional Speech Texts

Abstract

Invention deals with the content of a speech, arrangement involves placing the content in an order that is most strategic, style focuses on selecting linguistic devices, such as metaphor, to make the message more appealing, memory assists the speaker in delivering the message correctly, and delivery ideally enables great reception of the message. Most students immediately grasp the importance of invention and how it applies to public speaking; however, the concept of arrangement often requires more explanation. While public speaking textbooks do a fine job of presenting various organizational patterns, most students seem to rely on the cause-effect or problem-solution approach without truly investigating whether they are the most appropriate choices. This article presents an activity that encourages students to experiment with invention and arrangement in a non-threatening manner. Essentially, this activity requires students to apply the rhetorical canons of invention and arrangement to deliver an informal presentation and engage in class discussion. 3. Thinking Critically, Speaking Famously, and Writing Effortlessly: An Alternative Performative Public Speaking Assignment

Abstract

Although the concepts of style and delivery occupy a significant portion of any public speaking class, students often fail to make use of stylistic devices or delivery techniques while writing and presenting their speeches. This activity invites students to critically analyze a public speech and then present the critique using their own voice along with the voice of a famous and/or historical speaker. With this activity, students are able to focus more on stylistic and delivery techniques as the famous speaker has already provided most of the written content for the assignment. A list of references and suggested readings is included.

With the rapid-fire delivery style, or "spreading," that occurs in most intercollegiate and high school debate organizations, some individuals have claimed that debate, as currently practiced, does not teach sound public communication skills. This paper does not debate the discussion surrounding spreading per se, but instead acknowledges its hold in debate and offers specific techniques to improve debaters' delivery. As such, this paper explores the rationale for spreading, provides a rationale for adapting theatrical rehearsal exercises to the debate community, and offers coaches specific theatrical rehearsal exercises to use during practices. The article presents a lesson plan which describes the contribution of the cultural activities to the formation of gendered identities. The teacher should familiarize students with the concept of symbolic interaction as well as the construction of gender. The teacher should ask students to examine how their self-concepts have been formed by cultural activities. In addition, the teacher should ask the students to list their gender accomplishments and reflect upon those experiences. Finally, the teacher is compelled to provide an example of gender resume.

Abstract

The article presents the author's views related to the value of education. According to her, with scholarship comes a responsibility to develop leadership and a duty to perform service. One way for you to fulfill these obligations is for you to understand the link between education and citizenry. Despite the historic link between education and citizenry, we have somehow lost sight of it. Many students see no reason to take a class in arts and humanities, history, or intercultural communication. This trend makes her realize how we have failed to inform our students of their obligations once they leave our classrooms and colleges. We have failed to persuade them that a myopic education is a mistake.
