Angiopoietin-like protein 8 (Angptl8) is a new constituent of angiopoietin-related protein family. In the present study, Landrace × Yorkshire pigs, C57BL/6 J mice, and Wistar rat were used as experimental animals. Using normal PCR, T-A cloning, RACE, and other experimental techniques, full length of porcine Angptl8 gene was cloned. Through real-time PCR, Angptl8 expression was detected in assorted tissues (kidney, heart, spleen, liver, lung, abdominal fat, and back longest muscle) of different animals. The present result showed that the full-length of porcine Angptl8 was 875 bp. Its ORF region contained 597 bp, from 21 bp to 618 bp, it had high conservation. The protein of Angptl8 had 198 amino acids. Its relative molecular mass was 21,988.3 Da. Its theoretical isoelectric point was 6.35. There was a highly hydrophobic region near the 10th amino acid site of the Angptl8 gene, while 177th and 187th were highly hydrophilic. Angptl8 protein may be not a transmembrane protein. The first to the 19th amino acids on the N-terminal were signal peptides, and the first 18th–19th amino acid sites may be the signal peptide shear site. In addition, Angptl8 in healthy pigs was mainly expressed in the liver. Its expression in heart and adipose tissue was minimum. Angptl8 of both mouse and rat was enriched in the fat and liver; mouse and rat minimum Angptl8 expression was in muscle and spleen, respectively. The present results suggest that there may exist species difference in tissue-specific expression of Angptl8.

A simply fabricated, highly sensitive, and inexpensive optical fiber temperature sensor is reported with a Fabry–Perot (FP) microcavity of controlled length. The microcavity with controllable length is fabricated by single-mode fiber (SMF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for temperature sensing. After the PDMS is cured, the SMF is connected to the supercontinuum light source (SCLS) and the optical spectrometer analyzer (OSA) for online observation of the reflection spectrum. The micro-displacement platform is used to pull the SMF to form an air cavity. After the air cavity is stabilized, ultraviolet (UV) activated glue is used for packaging outside the PDMS. The FP microcavity is formed by the end face of the SMF and the face of PDMS. The length of the FP microcavity can be controlled online by the micro-displacement platform to a minimum of 15 µm. The free spectral range (FSR) may reach 74.8 nm and the interference fringe contrast (IFC) is up to 19.8 dB to allow sensitive measurements across a wide temperature range. The experiments demonstrate a high temperature sensitivity of 5.388 nm/°C from 33 to 93 °C with high repeatability and linearity (R2=0.9937). Stability experiments showed that the maximum changes in wavelength and intensity are only 45 pm and 0.035 dB, respectively. It is anticipated that the easily constructed, compact, and inexpensive fiber-optic temperature sensor will be employed in practical applications.

Minority oversampling techniques have played a pivotal role in the field of imbalanced learning. While traditional oversampling algorithms can cause problems such as intra-class imbalance of samples, ignoring important information of boundary samples, and high similarity between new and old samples. Based on the situation, we proposed a new type of over-sampling method, BIRCH and Boundary Midpoint Centroid Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling Technique (BI-BMCSMOTE). First of all, the algorithm used the BIRCH clustering method to achieve quick cluster of the minority samples. After identifying and removing the noise, it marked the boundary minority samples in the label by probability. Secondly, it generated a density function for each sample cluster, calculated its density and sampling weight, performed midpoint composite sampling among the minority samples marked by probability and other minority samples in each cluster, and then calculated and analyzed the specific value of composite sampling to improve the accuracy of the model. According to the experimental results, the algorithm was proved to be valid.

Bombesin receptor subtype-3(BRS-3) is an orphan receptor in the bombesin receptor family. Its signal transduction mechanism and biological function have attracted much attention. Seeking the ligand for BRS-3 is of great significance for exploring its function. Considering the fact that the activation of BRS-3 receptor can induce the change in intracellular Ca~(2+) concentration, the fluo-rometric imaging plate reader(FLIPR) was utilized for ligand screening at the cellular level. Among more than 400 monomeric compounds isolated from Chinese herbs, yuanhunine from Corydalis Rhizoma and sophoraisoflavanone A and licoriphenone from Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma antagonized BRS-3 to varying degrees. It was confirmed in HEK293 cells expressing BRS-3 that yuanhunine, sophoraisoflavanone A, and licoriphenone inhibited the calcium current response after the activation of BRS-3 by [D-Phe~6,β-Ala~(11),Phe~(13),Nle~(14)]bombesin-(6-14) in a dose-dependent manner with the IC_(50) values being 8.58, 4.10, and 2.04 μmol·L~(-1), respectively. Further study indicated that yuanhunine and sophoraisoflavanone A exhibited good selectivity for BRS-3. In this study, it was found for the first time that monomers derived from Chinese herbs had antagonistic activity against orphan receptor BRS-3, which has provided a tool for further study of BRS-3 and also the potential lead compounds for new drug discovery. At the same time, it provides reference for the research and development of innovative drugs based on the active ingredients of Chinese herbs.

This study is to explore the effect of Qingfei Paidu Decoction(QPD) on the host metabolism and gut microbiome of rats with metabolomics and 16 S rDNA sequencing. Based on 16 S rDNA sequencing of gut microbiome and metabolomics(GC-MS and LC-MS/MS), we systematically studied the serum metabolites profile and gut microbiota composition of rats treated with QPD for continued 5 days by oral gavage. A total of 23 and 43 differential metabolites were identified based on QPD with GC-MS and LC-MS/MS, respectively. The involved metabolic pathways of these differential metabolites included glycerophospholipid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, TCA cycle and pyruvate metabolism. Meanwhile, we found that QPD significantly regulated the composition of gut microbiota in rats, such as enriched Romboutsia, Turicibacter, and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, and decreased norank_f_Lachnospiraceae. Our current study indicated that short-term intervention of QPD could significantly regulate the host metabolism and gut microbiota composition of rats dose-dependently, suggesting that the clinical efficacy of QPD may be related with the regulation on host metabolism and gut microbiome.

In this paper, a Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) based on the fusion structure of hollow-core fiber (HCF) and single-mode fiber (SMF) is reported. Its length can reach a level of 200 μm, which has the advantage of axial strain sensitivity, low temperature crosstalk, and a wide free spectrum range (FSR). The experimental results show that the axial strain and temperature sensitivity of FPI with the length of 200 μm is 1.50 pm/μe (R-square is 0.9999) and 1.5 pm/°C during the range of 20 °C–100 °C. A sensing structure based on a parallel Vernier effect is proposed to improve axial strain sensitivity and eliminate temperature crosstalk. Two FPIs with similar lengths are fabricated in this experiment. A 2*2 coupler parallels these two FPIs, the sensitivity of axial strain can be amplified by 22 times, and the optical path difference caused by temperature change can be eliminated. The axial strain sensitivity of the proposed sensor can reach 33.5 pm/μe owing to the parallel Vernier effect with excellent linear property (R-square is 0.9981) and negligible crosstalk of temperature. In addition, the parallel sensing structure has the advantages of repeatability, reproducibility, flexible collocation, low cost, easy preparation.

The application of liquid filled single-polarization fiber for sensing is demonstrated. The single-polarization fiber with two air columns has only one polarization state transmitted in the core, but after being infiltrated liquid with suitable index, the fiber becomes highly birefringent and the light guided in the fiber is no longer single-polarized. Based on the principle of interference of two polarization states, possible application for temperature or twist measurement is discussed. The temperature measuring range can be modified by adjusting the concentration of glycerol-water solution, the sensitivity reached 1.82 nm/°C in our example. Moreover, twist can be measured according to variation of interference intensity.

The LCs modified by n -hexanol demonstrates the optimum electro-optical properties of lower driving voltage and shorter response time. Our measurements indicate that the liquid dopant n -alcohols can be used to modify LCs for lowering zenithal anchoring energy relative to undoped LCs. Without the drawbacks of precipitation and aggregation that the nanoparticles could have, the method of doping n -alcohol liquids provides a more stable and reliable choice to apply in the various LC display systems.

In this paper., an off-policy reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm is presented to solve the optimal preview tracking control of discrete time systems with unknown dynamics. Firstly., an augmented state-space system that includes the available preview knowledge as a part of the state vector is constructed to cast the preview tracking control problem as a standard linear quadratic regulator (LQR) one. Secondly., the reinforcement learning technique is utilized to solve the algebraic Riccati equation (ARE) using online measurable data without requiring the a priori knowledge of the system matrices. Compared with the existing off-policy RL algorithm., the proposed scheme solves a preview tracking control problem. A numerical simulation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

We report that the supramolecular liquid-crystal (LC) physical gel can be formed through the fibrous self-assembly of the polyfluorene-based π-conjugated polymer, poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT), in twisted nematic LC system for the first time. With the utility of alignment layers, the F8BT molecules can be aligned and formed the LC physical gels with the formation of self-assembled supramolecular structures in the twisted nematic LCs. In contrast to conventional LC physical gels, the presence of anisotropic π-conjugated structure makes the twisted nematic LC system exhibit excellent electro-optical properties of driving voltage reduction and contrast ratio enhancement owing to the conjugated polymer having a high π-electron delocalization degree which can efficiently drive LC molecules in much lower operating voltages. The self-assembled supramolecular network has revealed the potential for applying in various LC display devices with the ability of improving their electro-optical performance.

We demonstrate that the supramolecular structure can be formed through the fibrous self-assembly of the polyfluorene-based polymer F8BT in liquid crystal (LC) 5CB. With the utility of alignment layer, the F8BT molecules can be aligned and formed oriented polymer network. We found that the presence of oriented polymer network makes twisted nematic LC exhibit excellent electro-optical properties (EO) of driving voltage reduction and EO bump peak elimination. The polyfluorene-based supramolecular structure provides the function of stabilizing LC molecules. We consider this functional self-assembled network has potential to apply in various devices for the ability of improving performance in operating property.

Inspired by the enormous importance attributed to the structure and function of human telomeric DNA, we focus our attention on the interaction of [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppz)](2+) with the guanine-rich single-strand oligomer 5'-AGGGTTAGGGTTAGGGTTAGGG-3' (22AG) and the complementary cytosine-rich strand (22CT). In Na(+) buffer, 22AG may adopt an antiparallel basket quadruplex, whereas, it favours a mixed parallel/antiparallel structure in K(+) buffer. 22CT may self-associate at acidic pH into an i-motif. In this paper, the interaction between [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppz)](2+) and each unusual DNA was evaluated. It was interesting that [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppz)](2+) could promote the human telomeric repeat 22AG to fold into intramolecular antiparallel G-quadruplex without any other cations. What's more, [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppz)](2+) was found to have a strong preference for binding to G-quadruplexes that were induced through either Na(+) or K(+), while weak binding to i-motif was observed. The results also indicated that [Ru(bpy)(2)(dppz)](2+) could serve as a prominent molecular "light switch" for both G-quadruplexes, revealing a potential application of the title complex in luminescent signaling of G-quadruplex DNA.

Two new Ru(II) complexes, [Ru(bpy)2(pmip)]2+ (1) and [Ru(phen)2(pmip)]2+ (2), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, ESI-MS and 1H NMR spectra. Their DNA-binding properties were studied by means of UV–VIS, emission and CD spectra, thermal denaturation and viscosity measurements as well as their DNA-photocleavage properties. The experimental results show that both 1 and 2 can bind to DNA in an intercalative mode; the DNA-binding affinity of 2 is greater than that of 1, which suggests that the ancillary ligands have a significant effect on the spectroscopic properties and DNA-binding behavior of the Ru(II) complexes. Under irradiation with UV light, the Ru(II) complexes show excellent efficiency of cleaving DNA. This research may provide valuable insight into the interactions of metal complexes with DNA, knowledge that is an excellent backdrop for the rational design of promising drugs.

A new type of Bragg fibers, i.e. hollow-core cobweb-structured optical fibers, which can be used to the low-loss transmission from visible to near infrared region (0.65 μ m-1.55 μ m), terahertz wave (200 μ m-480 μ m) and circular-polarization-maintaining single-mode transmission are investigated. Results show that the hollow-core cobweb-structured fibers have less loss than other hollow-core Bragg fibers. The fibers can be constituted by using the plastics or glasses with large absorption losses.

Connatal tuberculosis is increasing in incidence and the mortality and morbidity of this disease remains high. We report a 27-week-old, 896 g female premature infant who had mild respiratory distress syndrome after birth. She developed signs of infection, progressive pneumonia and atelectasis which did not respond to mechanical ventilation and antibiotics. At 41 days of age, Mycobacterium tuberculosis was isolated from the non-bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage. The isolate was sensitive to isoniazid, rifampin, streptomycin, and pyrazinamide . Miliary tuberculosis was subsequently diagnosed in her mother on a chest X-ray film and sputum cultures. The infant was treated successfully with anti-tuberculosis drugs. She had normal growth and development at the chronological age of 20 months old. Conclusion:Connatal tuberculosis should be considered in premature infants with symptoms of sepsis refractory to antibiotics. Most premature infants with connatal tuberculosis have lung involvement, and non-bronchoscopic bronchoalveolar lavage can be a useful procedure to establish the diagnosis.

Our objective was to review the clinical features and radiographic manifestations of chest wall lesions in a pediatric chest unit. Twenty-five patients (11 males and 14 females, aged 14 months to 15 years) were suspected of having a chest wall lesion on the basis of clinical examination and chest radiograph. A retrospective review of clinical characteristics and radiographic findings was performed in order to define the pathology and extent of lesions and outcomes of chest wall diseases in children. Thirty-six percent of pediatric patients studied for thoracic abnormalities had anatomical variations of the thoracic cage such as sternal titling, bifid ribs, and costal cartilage convexities. Tuberculous infections of the sternum and ribs were seen in 4 cases. Osteochondromas were seen in 4 patients, and were especially noted in patients with a history of familial exostosis. Other malignant thoracic wall tumors included in this study included chondrosarcoma (n=1), Ewing's sarcoma (n=1), and primitive neuroectodermal tumor (n=2). In conclusion, the protruding lesions arising from the chest wall demonstrate a wide range of normal, congenital variant, and pathologic lesions arising from the soft tissues and bony components. Those with life-threatening lesions (less likely located in the parasternal region) are more prone to have chest pains and dyspneic respirations; in most cases, plain chest radiographs tend to have a high rate of bony or pleural involvement as well as thoracic deformities. In an endemic area of tuberculosis, costal tuberculosis should be considered in undiagnosed bony lesions; a chest CT scan could be diagnostically useful.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to investigate the correlation between upper airway 3-dimensional computed tomography (3-D CT) measurements and polysomnography data of patients with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: The 3-D CT scan measurements of the retropalatal space (RP), lateral and anteroposterior diameters of RP, retroglossal space, uvular thickness, and volume of upper airway were taken prospectively from 194 consecutive SDB patients. These were correlated with patients’ respective Respiratory Distress Index (RDI), snoring index, and lowest arterial oxygen saturation gathered from polysomnographic data. RESULTS: RP (r 0.27, P 0.0001) and lateral diameter (P 0.0073) were significantly correlated with RDI. Multivariate regression model (R 2 0.286) demonstrates RP (P 0.0036) and retroglossal space (P 0.027) to be predictive of RDI. No 3-D CT parameters correlated with snoring index and lowest arterial oxygen saturation attained statistical significant. CONCLUSION: The 3-D CT scan measurements can be valuable in evaluating upper airway patency in patients with SDB. The RP was the most relevant upper airway anatomic structure identified in these patients. SIGNIFICANCE: Modification of palatal surgery to increase the lateral dimension of the RP may be a breakthrough in increasing its success rate. (Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 2003;129:336-42.) Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) represents a continuum of sleep disorders that range from simple snoring to severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Recent advances in the treatment of SDB for patients with and without OSAS have created the demand for a valid tool that can be used to evaluate the upper airway patency of patients undergoing surgery. Symptoms of habitual snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness are common in the general population and have a poor predictive value in identifying patients with

Neonatal brain tumor is a rare clinical entity. The initial presentation in affected newborn infants is often subtle, nonspecific, and rarely includes focal neurologic signs. We report a 2-day-old male infant with congenital oligodendroglioma with initial manifestations of hyperbilirubinemia. Phototherapy was started immediately after admission. Because of a tense anterior fontanel and irritable crying, head ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging were performed and revealed a heterogenous brain tumor in the left temporoparietal lobe. Craniotomy and tumor evacuation was performed, and WHO grade III anaplastic oligodendroglioma was confirmed by the pathologic studies. The patient was discharged 3 weeks later, and outpatient follow-up examination revealed a normally developed infant at 6 months of age. The cause of jaundice was thought to be secondary to tumor hemorrhage, which was not infrequent in neonatal brain tumor.

Objective: We investigated the effect of intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation on the bone healing of tibial lengthening in rabbits. Methods: Twelve male rabbits were divided into two groups of six animals each. The first group underwent intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation, and the second group did not undergo intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation. Each animal's right tibia was lengthened 5 mm by using an uniplanar lengthening device. Bone mineral density (BMD) study was performed for all of the animals 1 day before operation and 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks after operation. All of the animals were killed 6 weeks postoperatively for biomechanical testing. Results: By using the preoperative BMD as an internal control, we found that the BMD of the smoke-inhalation group was decreased significantly compared with the non-smoke-inhalation group. The mean %BMD at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks were 49.9%, 61.2%, 65.9%, and 71.0%, respectively, in the smoke-inhalation group, whereas the mean %BMD were 54.9%, 71.8%, 76.4%, and 82.0%, respectively, in the non-smoke-inhalation group (two-tailed t test, p > 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.01 and p < 0.01 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks, respectively). By using the contralateral nonoperated tibia as internal control, we found that torsional strength of the smoke-inhalation group was decreased significantly compared with the non-smoke-inhalation group. The mean percentage of maximal torque was 63.8% in the smoke-inhalation group, whereas the mean percentage of maximal torque was 77.1% in the non-smoke-inhalation group (two tailed t test, p < 0.01). Conclusion: This study suggests that cigarette smoking delays the mineralization during the bone healing process of distraction osteogenesis and, thus, decreases the mechanical strength of the regenerating bone.

Renal abscess is a rare disease in childhood and early diagnosis is essential to minimize the renal damages. Experiences gained from this 10-year study on patients with CT-proved diagnosis include the varied clinical presentations and use of sonographic-marked nephromegaly and focal mass as indications for further CT diagnosis.

Pneumoencephaly is usually a complication of head trauma or craniotomy. We present a patient with large pneumoencephaly with acute neurological deficit after frequent falls, but without recent major trauma or surgery. Skull X-ray films show intracranial air in the frontal region and in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ventricles, reminiscent of an pneumoencephalogram. Computed tomography (CT) of the head shows air in the right frontal region and lateral ventricles. After craniotomy to relieve the pressure of the air, the clinical condition of the patient improved significantly after six months.

To evaluate effects of centipede on life span of drosophila and on the appearance of the filial generation.Drosophila melanogaster (male and female) were cultured in tubes with centipede extraction at concentrations of 0, 0.2%, 1%, 2.5%, or 5% until all drosophila died. The appearance of the filial generation were observed.The life span, including average, longest and shortest life span was shortened in exposed groups of both sexes and significantly dose-dependent. The appearance of the filial generation showed normal.Centipede extracts accelerates the aging of drosophila and shortens their life span. The appearance of the filial generation is not affected. Clinic using centipede for a long period should be carefully.

Optically controllable signals are fundamental to various applications from communication to super-resolution imaging. However, literature on non-fluorescent, nonlinear optical signals that can be reversibly turned on/off on a sub-micrometer scale is scant. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a scheme for the reversible suppression of second harmonic generation (SHG) based on dye-doped nematic liquid crystal molecules. Under a pump (suppressing SHG) and probe (generating SHG) setup with a tightly focusing microscope and a time-gated detection, outstanding modulation depth (>80%) has been realized. Surprisingly, the mechanism of liquid crystal SHG switch on a sub-micrometer scale was found to be light-induced thermal phase transition as against optical Frederick's transition. Quantitative analysis of the optical nonlinearity χ ( 2 ) versus local heating shows an excellent agreement of SHG signal suppression as well as its dependence on the liquid crystal molecular order and phase change. Our work provides an innovative example of applying nonlinear optical properties of soft materials, and can be further optimized for all-optical modulation applications.

A 2-year-old boy presented with chronic wheezes and was refractory to medical treatment. A high carina with bilateral bronchial stenosis was erroneously diagnosed by bronchoscopic examination. Serial direct coronal computed tomographic scans showed a displaced right upper lobe tracheal bronchus associated with tracheal stenosis below the abnormal bronchus. A direct coronal computed tomographic scan of the tracheobronchial tree is a useful imaging technique for the delineation of airway configuration when the bronchoscope fails to pass beyond a stenotic region. A coronal computed tomographic scan may make invasive tracheobronchography unnecessary.

Background: We investigated the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on the early phase of tibial lengthening in our established rabbit model. Methods: Twenty-four male rabbits (six per group) underwent right tibial lengthening by 5 mm. Group 1 then underwent 2.5 atmospheres of absolute hyperbaric oxygenation for 2 hours daily for 6 weeks postoperatively; group 2, for early 5 weeks (weeks 1–5), group 3, for late 5 weeks (weeks 2–6), and group 4 had no HBO therapy. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured before surgery and weekly thereafter from weeks 2 through 6. The mechanical strengths of the lengthened tibias were measured. Results: Significantly higher mean %BMDs were obtained for groups 1 and 2 than for groups 3 and 4. There was no difference in the mean %BMD between groups 1 and 2 (p > 0.05). The results were similar for mean percentage of maximal torque; group 1 had the maximum torque, followed sequentially by groups 2 though 4. Conclusion: The study results suggest that early and full-term administration of HBO therapy on tibial lengthening may achieve better benefits.

Extravasation of calcium gluconate is not an uncommon complication in neonatal units, which may result in skin and soft tissue inflammation, injury and even infection. We report an 11-day-old preterm infant who developed osteomyelitis at an infiltrated intravenous site through which calcium gluconate was infused. The patient was initially treated conservatively as a simple calcium-infiltrate. Clinical condition deteriorated until proper antibiotic treatment was given. We exclude other possible causes and assume that calcium-infiltrate had an important role in the pathogenesis. We conclude that osteomyelitis should be considered in a patient with calcium extravasation whose soft tissue inflammation does not improve as expected. Furthermore, using a diluted calcium solution and checking the insertion site frequently in order to identify extravasation earlier would prevent the complication.

A premature infant experienced respiratory distress due to chylothorax. Contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography showed superior vena cava (SVC) obstruction with collaterals, and surgery confirmed an obstruction of the SVC by intravascular fibrotic tissue and thrombi caused by placement of a central venous catheter. The respiratory distress improved after surgical intervention. In the differential diagnosis of acute respiratory distress, it is necessary to consider catheter-related chylothorax and SVC syndrome when a previously stable patient has an acute change in cardiopulmonary status, regardless of the duration of catheter use. Although often considered safe and easy, central venous catheter placement may result in complications. Using appropriate catheters and choosing proper insertion sites can minimize these events. Early diagnosis and treatment can be life-saving should complications occur.

During the last decade, an increasing number of paediatric surgeons have chosen to perform a delayed oesophageal anastomosis for oesophageal atresia (OA) without tracheo-oesophageal fistula (TOF).The gap between the two oesophageal pouches is an important determinant in the surgical management of these patients. We describe a new method using spiral computed tomography (CT) to evaluate the gap between the proximal and distal oesophageal pouches. In our last four cases of OA without TOF, Stamm gastrostomy was performed soon after birth. At about 4 weeks of age, these patients underwent spiral CT with air inflation via the gastrostomy feeding tube with 3 mm slice thickness, pitch 1, and reconstruction interval every 1.5 mm. A three-dimensional reconstruction was done and measurements of the gap between the two segments were recorded. The procedure was repeated at monthly intervals until the optimal conditions for surgery were observed. All the babies thrived well on gastrostomy feeding. The gap distances were 2.4, 3.8, 4.2 and 5.9 cm respectively. Delayed primary oesophageal anastomosis was accomplished in three cases and gastric transposition was performed in another case at 12, 13, 14 and 16 weeks of age. The exact anatomical position the operation correlated well with the pre-operative three-dimensional CT results. Conclusion: this new technique is an easy and non-invasive method to assess the long gap in babies with oesophageal atresia without tracheo-oesophageal fistula. The radiological findings are also consistent with surgical anatomical situation during surgery suggesting that this investigation is useful in the pre-operative planning of oesophageal anastomosis or replacement.

We investigated whether -intermittent hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can mitigate the adverse effects of cigarette smoking on the bone healing of tibial lengthening by using a previously validated rabbit model.Eighteen male rabbits were randomly divided into three groups of six animals each. Group 1 (smoking plus HBO) went through intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, group 2 (control) did not go through intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation or hyperbaric oxygen therapy and group 3 (smoking) went through intermittent cigarette smoke inhalation. Each animal's right tibia was lengthened 5 mm by using an uniplanar lengthening device. Bone mineral density (BMD) study was performed for all the animals at 1 day before operation and 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks after operation. All of the animals were killed at 6 weeks postoperatively for biomechanical testing.By using the preoperative BMD as an internal control, we found that the BMD of group 1 (smoking plus HBO)and group 2 (control) was superior to that of group 3 (smoking). The mean %BMD at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks were 58.6%, 66.6%, 73.7%, and 83.8%, respectively, in group 1, whereas the mean %BMD were 52.0%, 64.3%, 70.1%, and 76.2%, respectively, in group 2, and the mean %BMD were 46.2%, 54.0%, 64.9%, and 69.4%, respectively, in group 3 (two-tailed t test, p0.05, p0.05, p0.05, and p0.05 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 week respectively between group 1 and group 2, p0.01,p0.01,p0.01, and p0.01 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 week, respectively, between group 1 and group 3 and p0.05, p0.05, p0.05, and p0.05 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 week respectively between group 2 and group 3). By using the contralateral nonoperated tibia as an internal control, we found that the torsional strength of group 1 (smoking plus HBO) and group 2 (control) was superior to that of group 3 (smoking). The mean percentage of maximum torque was 80.9% in group 1 (smoking plus HBO) and was 78.0% in group 2 (control), whereas the mean percentage of maximum torque was 59.6 % in group 3 (smoking) (two-tailed t test, p0.05 between groups land 3 and between groups 2 and 3, whereas p0.05 between groups 1 and 2).This study suggests that smoke inhalation delays the bone healing in tibial lengthening; however, HBO mitigates the delayed healing effect of smoke inhalation and, thus, helps the smoking animal in achieving an expeditious bone healing in tibial lengthening.

We investigated the effect of intermittent hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy on the bone healing of tibial lengthening in rabbits. Twelve male rabbits were divided into two groups of six animals each. The first group went through 2.5 atmospheres absolute of hyperbaric oxygenation for 2 hours daily, and the second group did not go through hyperbaric oxygenation. Each animal's right tibia was lengthened 5 mm using an uniplanar lengthening device. Bone mineral density (BMD) study was performed for all of the animals at 1 day before operation and at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks after operation. All of the animals were killed at 6 weeks postoperatively for biomechanical testing. Using the preoperative BMD as an internal control, we found that the BMD of the HBO group was increased significantly compared with the non HBO group. The mean %BMD at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks were 69.5%, 80.1%, 87.8%, and 96.9%, respectively, in HBO group, whereas the mean %BMD were 51.6%, 67.7%, 70.5%, and 79.2%, respectively, in non-HBO group (two tailed t test, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, p < 0.01, and p < 0.01 at 3, 4, 5, and 6 weeks, respectively). Using the contralateral nonoperated tibia as an internal control, we found that torsional strength of lengthened tibia of the HBO group was increased significantly compared with the non-HBO group. The mean percent of maximal torque was 88.6% in HBO group at 6 weeks, whereas the mean percent of maximal torque was 76.0% in non-HBO group (two-tailed t test, p < 0.01). The results of this study suggest that the bone healing of tibial lengthening is enhanced by intermittent hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
