A new phenazine-imidazole based Schiff base (PIS) fluorescent probe has been developed for the ratiometric detection of Cd 2+ ions in aqueous media at physiological pH. PIS upon binding with Cd 2+ ions shows red shifted fluorescence and thereby, permits ratiometric detection of Cd(II) ions. A detection limit down to 2.10 × 10 -8 M was determined for Cd 2+ quantitation. Also, the accompanying apparent fluorescence color change (from yellow to orange red) is noticeable to the naked eye under a UV-lamp. The sensing mechanism could be attributed to the 1 : 1 PIS-Cd complexation, followed by extension of the conjugation due to better planarity and modulation of the charge transfer efficiency in the probe. This was complemented by solvatochromism and density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, PIS was used to detect Cd 2+ in Oxya chinensis cells, zebrafish larvae and live tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana under a fluorescence microscope, showing great potential in analyzing living biosystems.

A new fluorescent probe, 3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-5-bromosalicylaldehyde- 4 N-phenyl thiosemicarbazone (BTT), for ratiometric sensing of Zn 2+ ions in methanol/HEPES buffer solution (3 : 2, pH = 7.4) is reported in this paper. The presence of Zn 2+ ions yields a significant blue shift in the maximum emission of BTT from 570 nm to 488 nm, accompanied by a clear color change from orange to green. This emission change of BTT upon binding to Zn 2+ in a 1 : 1 ratio may be due to the block of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) as well as chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) on complex formation. The limit of detection (LOD) determined for Zn 2+ quantitation was down to 37.7 nM. In addition, the probe BTT displays the ability to image both exogenous Zn 2+ ions loaded into HeLa cells and endogenous Zn 2+ distribution in living SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells.

A calix[4]pyrrole strapped by benzenebistriazole has been prepared as an artificial anion binding receptor. This neutral anion receptor shows high sulfate binding affinity and selectivity in an aqueous solution. In solid state, the receptor binds the sulfate anion in a chair-like 3D cavity via multiple N-H and C-H hydrogen bonds.

A formal enantioselective total synthesis of bisdehydroneostemoninine employing L-glutamic acid as the chiral pool is described. The key features of the synthesis include regioselective and enantioselective opening the chiral epoxide with dimethylsulfonium methylide and tandem Friedel-Crafts cyclization followed by lactonization to form the 5-7-5 tricyclic core of the target stemona alkaloids. The synthetic route provides opportunities to explore the biological behavior of enantiopure bisdehydroneostemoninine. [Formula: see text].

Herein, we report a palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative cross-coupling of indoles with cyclic enones to give β-indolyl cyclic enones under mild and neutral reaction conditions. The key to the success is to explore a mild condition, which ensures the indole C-H activation and subsequent syn β-hydride elimination through rapid enolization isomerization of Pd(II)-enolate while suppressing other undesired side reactions. Synthetic utility has also been demonstrated in the flexible transformation of the coupling products to meta -phenols and benzo[a]carbazoles.

We report a new 7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1, 3-diazolyl (NBD)-based chemosensor containing a piperazine derivative, NBDP, for detection of mercury ions in almost 100% aqueous medium. The chemosensor shows sensing exclusively toward Hg 2+ with a switch-on fluorescence response at 543 nm, which could be attributed to the blocking of PET (photo-induced electron transfer) process upon complexation with mercury ions. The molar ratio of Hg(Ⅱ) to NBDP in the complex is 1:1 based on the Job's plot and HRMS studies. Optimized configurations of NBDP and NBDP-Hg 2+ complexes were simulated by means of DFT calculations. The reversible fluorescence response with low detection limit (19.2 nM) in the pH range of 6.0-7.5 renders NBDP a promising candidate for Hg 2+ detection in neutral aqueous environments. For the practical application of the chemosensor, test strips were successfully fabricated for rapid detection of Hg 2+ ions. Moreover, the utility of NBDP showing the mercury recognition in Human liver cancer cells (SMMC-7721) and zebrafish as well as in live tissues of Arabidopsis thaliana has been demonstrated as monitored by fluorescence imaging., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Herein, we report a straightforward, environmentally friendly, and controllable palladium/ligand catalytic system to enable reductive/oxidative Heck reactions of cyclic enones with thiophene or furan derivatives via C-H activation. The key to this tunable reaction is the appropriate intercepting thienyl-Pd(II)-enolate during the enolization process. Such a controllable and economic protocol would not only provide efficient methods to construct various value-added β-heteroarylated cyclic ketones/enones but also shed light on developing other conjugate addition reactions via C-H activation.

A simple naphthopyran derivative (L) has been synthesized as a colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent probe for cyanide sensing in the aqueous DMSO medium and paper strips. The nucleophilic addition of CN - to this probe blocks the π-conjugation and the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition between naphthopyran and benzoindolium moieties and consequently results in remarkable color and spectral changes. Upon addition of cyanide, L displayed a ratiometric fluorescence response with a blue shift of the peak position and a noticeable color change from fuchsia to colorless within 90s. The probe exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity toward CN - over other anions and the detection limit was calculated to be 7.56×10 -7 M, which is well below the WHO cyanide standard in drinking water (1.9μM). In addition, the excitation and emission of the probe were within the visible wavelength range, which could benefit an application of the probe in an inexpensive portable cyanide sensor. The sensing ability of L has been successfully applied in real water samples. A new julolidine based Schiff base receptor (L) was synthesized and characterized. L forms a 1:1 complex with Al 3+ in methanol, resulting in an immediate color change from chartreuse to orange and a remarkable enhancement in its emission intensity along with a bathochromic shift from 540 nm to 570 nm. Addition of trace amounts of water significantly quenches the fluorescence emission, where a decomplexation of Al 3+ from the L-Al 3+ complex takes place. The significant quenching effect indicated that the L-Al 3+ ensemble system can be used to detect trace water in commercial methanol. From the fluorescence titration, the detection limit for sensing water in methanol was estimated to be 0.0047%. We have also made an easy-to-prepare test strip of L-Al 3+ to detect water in methanol through naked-eye observation, which is possible to realize in situ monitoring., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Phytochemical study of the buds of Wikstroemia chamaedaphne Meisn. led to the isolation of seven previously undescribed diterpenes, including one tigliane diterpene (wikstchalide A), two daphnane diterpenes (wikstroelides W-X), and four lathyrane diterpenes (laurifoliosides A-B and 2-epi-laurifoliosides A-B), along with four known diterpenes. The structures of these compounds were established by extensive spectroscopic evidence and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. Wikstchalide A possesses a 5,6-epoxy ring in the tigliane skeleton. Two compounds exhibited potential anti-hepatitis B virus activities, with IC 50 values of 46.5 and 88.3 μg/mL against hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBsAg), and six compounds showed certain inhibitory effects on HBV-DNA replication with the inhibition ratios ranging from 2.0% to 33.0% at the concentrations ranging from 0.39 to 6.25 μg/mL., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. Dehydrogenative coupling of cyclic enones with heteroarenes has been a longstanding challenge because of the competitive ketone dehydrogenation and conjugated addition. Herein, a dehydrogenative coupling reaction of cyclic enones of different sizes with substituted thiophenes to construct β-thienyl cyclic enone compounds through palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization under mild reaction conditions is reported. Simple substituted thiophenes with different functional groups can be directly introduced into cyclic enones with predominant regioselectivity at the α position of thiophene moieties and excellent functional group tolerance. Further molecular transformations of the coupling products to synthetically useful meta-heteroarylated phenol derivatives have also been demonstrated.

A new strategy to prepare β-acyl allylic methylsulfides and -sulfones through acid promoted direct cross-coupling of methyl ketones with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is reported. The reaction proceeded through the nucleophilic attack of enamine intermidiates derived from ketones to in situ generated thionium ion species, followed by elimination of methanthiol to give ketoallylic methylsulfides. With the prolonged reaction time, such products could be further reacted with a methyl sulfonyl radical, which might be generated from a methylthiosulfonate species, to afford ketoallylic methylsulfones in high yields. Molecular transformations of the allylic methylsulfides were also demonstrated.

A simple tailor-made pH fluorescent probe 2-benzothiazole (N-ethylcarbazole-3-yl) hydrazone (Probe) is facilely synthesized by the condensation reaction of 2-hydrazinobenzothiazole with N-ethylcarbazole-3-formaldehyde, which is a useful fluorescent probe for monitoring extremely acidic and alkaline pH, quantitatively. The pH titrations indicate that Probe displays a remarkable emission enhancement with a pK a of 2.73 and responds linearly to minor pH fluctuations within the extremely acidic range of 2.21-3.30. Interestingly, Probe also exhibits strong pH-dependent characteristics with pK a 11.28 and linear response to extreme-alkalinity range of 10.41-12.43. In addition, Probe shows a large Stokes shift of 84 nm under extremely acidic and alkaline conditions, high selectivity, excellent sensitivity, good water-solubility and fine stability, all of which are favorable for intracellular pH imaging. Three naphthol Schiff base-type fluorescent sensors, 1,3-Bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylideneamino)propane (L1), 1,3-Bis(1-naphthylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropane (L2) and 1,3-Bis(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylideneamino)-2-hydroxypropane (L3), have been synthesized. Their recognition abilities for Al(3+) are studied by fluorescence spectra. Coordination with Al(3+) inhibited the CN isomerization of Schiff base which intensely increase the fluorescence of L1-L3. Possessing a suitable space coordination structure, L3 is a best selective probe for Al(3+) over other metal ions in MeOH-HEPES buffer (3/7, V/V, pH=6.6, 25°C, λem=435nm). A turn-on ratio over 140-fold is triggered with the addition of 1.0 equiv. Al(3+) to L3. The binding constant Ka of L3-Al(3+) is found to be 1.01×10(6.5)M(-1) in a 1:1 complex mode. The detection limit for Al(3+) is 0.05μM. Theoretical calculations have also been included in support of the configuration of the L3-Al(3+) complex. Hollow fiber supported liquid membrane (HFSLM) extraction was coupled with ICP-MS for speciation analysis of labile Ag(I) and total Ag(I) in dispersions of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and environmental waters. Ag(I) in aqueous samples was extracted into the HFSLM of 5%(m/v) tri-n-octylphosphine oxide in n-undecane, and stripped in the acceptor of 10 mM Na2S2O3 and 1 mM Cu(NO3)2 prepared in 5 mM NaH2PO4-Na2HPO4 buffer (pH 7.5). Negligible depletion and exhaustive extraction were conducted under static and 250 rpm shaking to extract the labile Ag(I) and total Ag(I), respectively. The extraction equilibration was reached in 8 h for both extraction modes. The extraction efficiency and detection limit were (2.97 ± 0.25)% and 0.1 μg/L for labile Ag(I), and (82.3 ± 2.0)% and 0.5 μg/L for total Ag(I) detection, respectively. The proposed method was applied to determine labile Ag(I) and total Ag(I) in different sized AgNP dispersions and real environmental waters, with spiked recoveries of total Ag(I) in the range of 74.0-98.1%. With the capability of distinguishing labile and total Ag(I), our method offers a new approach for evaluating the bioavailability and understanding the fate and toxicity of AgNPs in aquatic systems.

It is still not very clear what roles the various Ag species play in the toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). In this study, we found that traditional exposure media result in uncontrollable but consistent physicochemical transformation of AgNPs, causing artifacts in determination of median lethal concentration (LC50) and hindering the identification of Ag species responsible for the acute toxicity of AgNPs to Daphnia magna. This obstacle was overcome by using 8 h exposure in 0.1 mmol L(-1) NaNO3 medium, in which we measured the 8-h LC50 of seven AgNPs with different sizes and coatings, and determined the concentrations of various Ag species. The LC50 as free Ag(+) of the seven AgNPs (0.37-0.44 μg L(-1)) agreed very well with that of AgNO3 (0.40 μg L(-1)), and showed the lowest value compared to that as total Ag, total Ag(+), and dissolved Ag, demonstrating free Ag(+) is exclusively responsible for the acute toxicity of AgNPs to D. magna, while other Ag species in AgNPs have no contribution to the acute toxicity. Our results demonstrated the great importance of developing appropriate exposure media for evaluating risk of nanomaterials.

The fast growing and abundant use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in commercial products alerts us to be cautious of their unknown health and environmental risks. Because of the inherent redox instability of silver, AgNPs are highly dynamic in the aquatic system, and the cycle of chemical oxidation of AgNPs to release Ag(+) and reconstitution to form AgNPs is expected to occur in aquatic environments. This study investigated how inevitable environmentally relevant factors like sunlight, dissolved organic matter (DOM), pH, Ca(2+)/Mg(2+), Cl(-), and S(2-) individually or in combination affect the chemical transformation of AgNPs. It was demonstrated that simulated sunlight induced the aggregation of AgNPs, causing particle fusion or self-assembly to form larger structures and aggregates. Meanwhile, AgNPs were significantly stabilized by DOM, indicating that AgNPs may exist as single particles and be suspended in natural water for a long time or delivered far distances. Dissolution (ion release) kinetics of AgNPs in sunlit DOM-rich water showed that dissolved Ag concentration increased gradually first and then suddenly decreased with external light irradiation, along with the regeneration of new tiny AgNPs. pH variation and addition of Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) within environmental levels did not affect the tendency, showing that this phenomenon was general in real aquatic systems. Given that a great number of studies have proven the toxicity of dissolved Ag (commonly regarded as the source of AgNP toxicity) to many aquatic organisms, our finding that the effect of DOM and sunlight on AgNP dissolution can regulate AgNP toxicity under these conditions is important. The fact that the release of Ag(+) and regeneration of AgNPs could both happen in sunlit DOM-rich water implies that previous results of toxicity studies gained by focusing on the original nature of AgNPs should be reconsidered and highlights the necessity to monitor the fate and toxicity of AgNPs under more environmentally relevant conditions.

The toxic mechanism of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is still debating, partially because of the common co-occurrence and the lack of methods for separation of AgNPs and Ag(+) in biological matrices. For the first time, Triton-X 114-based cloud point extraction (CPE) was proposed to separate AgNPs and Ag(+) in the cell lysates of exposed HepG2 cells. Cell lysates were subjected to CPE after adding Na2S2O3, which facilitated the transfer of AgNPs into the nether Triton X-114-rich phase by salt effect and the preserve of Ag(+) in the upper aqueous phase through the formation of hydrophilic complex. Then the AgNP and Ag(+) contents in the exposed cells were determined by ICP-MS after microwave digestion of the two phases, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, over 67% of AgNPs in cell lysates were extracted into the Triton X-114-rich phase while 94% of Ag(+) remained in the aqueous phase, and the limits of detection for AgNPs and Ag(+) were 2.94 μg/L and 2.40 μg/L, respectively. This developed analytical method was applied to quantify the uptake of AgNPs to the HepG2 cells. After exposure to 10 mg/L AgNPs for 24 h, about 67.8 ng Ag were assimilated per 10(4) cells, in which about 10.3% silver existed as Ag(+). Compared to the pristine AgNPs (with 5.2% Ag(+)) for exposure, the higher ratio of Ag(+) to AgNPs in the exposed cells (10.3% Ag(+)) suggests the transformation of AgNPs into Ag(+) in the cells and/or the higher uptake rate of Ag(+) than that of AgNPs. Given that the toxicity of Ag(+) is much higher than that of AgNPs, the substantial content of Ag(+) in the exposed cells suggests that the contribution of Ag(+) should be taken into account in evaluating the toxicity of AgNPs to organisms, and previous results obtained by regarding the total Ag content in organisms as AgNPs should be reconsidered.

Centrin is a member of the EF-hand superfamily that is phosphorylated during mitosis and is associated with alterations of contractile fibers. To obtain insight into the structural basis for the functional effects of phosphorylation, we found that the serine residue at position 166 of Euplotes octocarinatus centrin (EoCen) can be phosphorylated by protein kinase A (PKA) in the absence or presence of metal ions using (31)P-NMR spectroscopy. Cations of Ca(2+) and Tb(3+) bound to EoCen resulted in an important structural transition from a closed to an open state. EoCen in both the closed and the open state can be phosphorylated by PKA. After phosphorylation, secondary and tertiary structural changes of EoCen, mainly on its C-terminal domain (C-EoCen), were noted through circular dichroism spectroscopy, native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and 2-p-toluidinylnaphthalene-6-sulfonate fluorescence. After the protein was phosphorylated, the α-helix content and the extent of the exposed hydrophobic surface on EoCen were decreased. Phosphorylated EoCen has higher affinity for the peptide melittin than nonphosphorylated EoCen. In addition, binding of melittin with phosphorylated C-EoCen was enthalpy-driven.

The inclusion interaction between propranolol (PPL) and p-sulfonatocalix[6]arene (SCX6) was investigated by fluorescence and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. Influences of pH, temperature, ionic strength and the concentration of SCX6 were examined in detail. In phosphate buffer solution with pH 7.5, the fluorescence of PPL dramatically quenched upon addition of SCX6 revealing the formation of inclusion complexes between PPL and SCX6. The stoichiometric ratio was verified to be 1:1 by the continuous variation method. The inclusion constant of PPL-SCX6 complexes was calculated as 2.2×10(4)L/mol by the nonlinear curve fitting method. (1)H NMR titration spectra testified that the aliphatic chain of PPL may be partially penetrated into the hydrophobic cavity of SCX6. An ultraviolet-visible light (UV-Vis)-reversible but fluorescence-irreversible chemosensor was developed for the detection of copper. Coordination between the probe, 2-pyridylaldehyde fluorescein hydrazone (FHP), and Cu(2+) gave a reversible UV-Vis response, Storage of the probe-Cu complex resulted in hydrolytic cleavage of the N═C bond, which released the fluorophore (ring-opened fluorescein hydrazine) and gave irreversible fluorescence. Thus, FHP becomes a multifunctional chemosensor, and its reversibility can be controlled by the reaction time. Cu(2+) in living cells could be detected using FHP and general fluorescence methods.

The rapid growth in commercial use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) will inevitably increase silver exposure in the environment and the general population. As the fate and toxic effects of AgNPs is related to the Ag(+) released from AgNPs and the transformation of Ag(+) into AgNPs, it is of great importance to develop methods for speciation analysis of AgNPs and Ag(+). This study reports the use of Triton X-114-based cloud point extraction as an efficient separation approach for the speciation analysis of AgNPs and Ag(+) in antibacterial products and environmental waters. AgNPs were quantified by determining the Ag content in the Triton X-114-rich phase with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) after microwave digestion. The concentration of total Ag(+), which consists of the AgNP adsorbed, the matrix associated, and the freely dissolved, was obtained by subtracting the AgNP content from the total silver content that was determined by ICPMS after digestion. The limits of quantification (S/N = 10) for antibacterial products were 0.4 μg/kg and 0.2 μg/kg for AgNPs and total silver, respectively. The reliable quantification limit was 3 μg/kg for total Ag(+). The presence of Ag(+) at concentrations up to 2-fold that of AgNPs caused no effects on the determination of AgNPs. In the cloud point extraction of AgNPs in antibacterial products, the spiked recoveries of AgNPs were in the range of 71.7-103% while the extraction efficiencies of Ag(+) were in the range of 1.2-10%. The possible coextracted other silver containing nanoparticles in the cloud point extraction of AgNPs were distinguished by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM)- energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-vis spectrum. Real sample analysis indicated that even though the manufacturers claimed nanosilver products, AgNPs were detected only in three of the six tested antibacterial products.

A novel silyl-linked amidinate-amidine monoanionic ligand 3 was synthesized by double additions of PhCN starting from silyl-linked bis(amino) monoanion 2, which underwent an intramolecular Li/H metathesis and double silyl shift. The related Zr(IV) complex 4 was prepared and confirmed by X-ray diffraction revealing a structural rearrangement from its precursor. The mechanisms for the reaction processes have been proposed. Each of compounds 2, 3 and 4 was characterized by NMR spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction. Complex 4 exhibited moderate activity for ethylene polymerization in the presence of methylalumoxane (MAO).

A regenerative, molecular machine-like "ON-OFF-ON" chemosensor based on a chromene molecule with the pyran ring "OFF-ON-OFF" cycle is reported for the first time. It behaves as a molecular lock that requires a thiol "key" to open the lock and a mercury(II) ion "hand" that unlatches the key for unsheathing the key to close the lock.

A novel intramolecular donor-acceptor compound has been synthesized and characterized. This compound was a symmetrical A-pi-D-pi-A type molecule containing two benzimidazole rings as two electron acceptors (A) and an N-ethylcarbazole group as electron donors (D). The absorption and emission spectra of the compound were determined by experimental methods in solution and were computed by using the density functional theory (DFT) and the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in gas phase and in chloroform solution. The calculated absorption and emission wavelengths were in good agreement with the experimental ones. The fluorescence quantum yields and fluorescence lifetimes of the compound in several solvents have been studied by means of steady state and time resolved fluorescence. The results showed the compound had high quantum yield. The cross-section of two-photon absorption (TPA) of the compound was measured by using femtosecond laser in dichloromethane solution. The result indicated the cross-section maximum of two-photon absorption was 430 GM at 600 nm. A new thiol-containing colorimetric probe has been developed by using a chromene derivative, 7-nitro-2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]chromen-1-one (1). The molecule exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity for detecting thiol species as cysteine, homocysteine, and glutathione in aqueous solution through a rapid visual color change from colorless to yellow.

The supramolecular systems of 5-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-10,15,20-tris-(4-chlorophenyl)porphyrin (p-HTClPP) with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD), heptakis(2,3,6-tri-O-methyl)-beta-CD (TM-beta-CD), carboxymethyl-beta-cyclodextrin (CM-beta-CD) and sulfurbutylether-beta-CD (SBE-beta-CD) have been investigated by means of absorption, fluorescence and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. The formation of inclusion complexes has been confirmed on the base of changes of spectroscopy properties. "The double reciprocal method" has been used to determine the stoichiometry and the inclusion constants of p-HTClPP with the four cyclodextrins (CDs). The results show that p-HTClPP can form 1:1 inclusion complexes with the four CDs. Compared with parent native beta-CD, the inclusion abilities of modified beta-CDs with p-HTClPP are stronger. It indicates that the hydrophobic effect plays an important role in the inclusion procedure. The mechanism of inclusion interaction was examined by (1)H NMR technique. During the study of p-HTClPP-TM-beta-CD supramolecular complex, an efficient enhancement of fluorescence intensity was observed. Based on this phenomenon, fluorometric method for the determination of p-HTClPP was developed. The relationship between fluorescence intensity and the concentration of p-HTClPP is linear from 1.0 x 10(-9) to 7.0 x 10(-6)mol L(-1). The limit of detection is 8.3 x 10(-10)mol L(-1) and the relative standard deviation (R.S.D.) is 1.3% (n=8). This research will provide useful information for further application of p-HTClPP.

The interaction of 5-pyridine-10,15,20-tris-(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrin (PyTPP) with beta-CD and TM-beta-CD were examined by UV-vis absorption, fluorescence and (1)H NMR spectroscopy. PyTPP prefers to form the 1:1 inclusion complex with TM-beta-CD but hardly form inclusion complex with beta-CD. An inclusion constant (K) for the formation of PyTPP-TM-beta-CD inclusion complex has been evaluated to be 4.4x10(3)L/mol from the absorbance changes. This K value is nearly the same as that 4.5x10(3)L/mol obtained from the fluorescence intensity changes. Compared to beta-CD, the inclusion ability of TM-beta-CD with PyTPP is stronger. It indicates that the hydrophobic effect plays an important role in the inclusion procedure. The mechanism of inclusion interaction was carried out by 1H NMR technique. Furthermore, the interaction of PyTPP with DNA is shown here. It can bind DNA by out-side stacking along the DNA helix but not by intercalation because of the high electron density in the porphyrin core. The binding constant and binding number of PyTPP to DNA are 4.3x10(3) and 1.3, respectively. The interaction of PyTPP with DNA was further carried out in the presence of TM-beta-CD. The significant decrease of the binding constant and binding number were observed and the interaction of porphyrin-bound DNA has been inhibited, which was due to the fact that PyTPP inter into the cavity of TM-beta-CD and influence binding affinity of PyTPP to DNA.

The interaction of cloxacillin sodium with beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) has been studied by several analytical techniques, including (1)H NMR, fluorescence spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy. In this paper, solid inclusion complex of cloxacillin sodium with beta-CD was synthesized by the coprecipitation method. In addition, the characterization of the inclusion complex has been proved by fluorimetry, infrared spectroscopy and 1D, 2D NMR. The experimental results confirmed the existence of 1:1 inclusion complex of cloxacillin sodium with beta-CD. The formation constant of complex was determined by fluorescence method and (1)H NMR. Spacial configuration of complex has been proposed on 2D NMR technique.

In this paper, a solid complex of cloxacillin sodium (CS) with Zn(II) was prepared by coprecipitation and characterized by UV, fluorescence, IR, and thermal spectra. Furthermore, the nature of the complex has been studied by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The influence of Zn(II) on the combination of CS and calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) was studied using fluorescence spectrophotometry, and the formation of binary CS-Zn(II) and CS-CT DNA complexes and ternary CS-Zn(II)-CT DNA complex was studied. The results show that the fluorescence intensity of CS can be quenched in the presence of Zn(II) or DNA. In the presence of Zn(II), the fluorescence quenching action of DNA on CS was strongly enhanced. Based on the fluorescence intensity, the formation constants of CS-Zn(II) and CS-CT DNA complexes were calculated, and the mechanism of interaction between CS, Zn(II), and DNA is discussed.

The ability of alpha-cyclodextrin, beta-cyclodextrin and hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD, beta-CD and HP-beta-CD) to break pefloxacin mesylate (PM) aggregates by forming inclusion complexes has been studied using 1H NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy), 13C NMR and fluorescence spectra. The inclusion constants are determined to compare the corresponding inclusion capacity. Solid-inclusion complexes of PM with CDs are synthesized by coprecipitation method, and all the inclusion ratios are found to be 1:1. Additionally, spatial characterization of complexes has been proposed based on two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance technique (2D NMR) and spatial conformation is also investigated to propose two possible models between PM and CDs.

An on-line system that consists of continuous-flow liquid membrane extraction (CFLME), C18 precolumn, and liquid chromatography with UV detection was applied to trace analysis of sulfonylurea herbicides in water. During preconcentration by CFLME, five target compounds, including metsulfuron methyl, bensulfuron methyl, tribenuron methyl, sulfometuron methyl, and ethametsulfuron, were enriched in 960 microl of 0.5 mol l(-1) Na2CO3-NaHCO3 (pH 10.8) buffer used as acceptor. This acceptor was on-line neutralized and transported to the C18 precolumn where the analytes were absorbed and focused. Then the focused analytes were injected onto a C18 analytical column for separation and detection at 240 nm. The proposed method was applied to determine sulfonylurea herbicides in water, river, and reservoir water with detection limits of 10-50 ng l(-1) when enriching a 120-ml sample. Throughput is typically one sample per hour.

On-line coupling continuous-flow liquid membrane extraction (CFLME) with HPLC, a novel automatic system was developed for the determination of sulfonylurea herbicides in water. After an automatic trace-enrichment process by CFLME, which is the combination of continuous flow liquid-liquid extraction and support liquid membrane (SLM) extraction, the target analytes were concentrated in 50 microl of 0.2 M Na2CO3-NaHCO3 (pH 10.0) buffer. The concentrated sample solutions were injected directly onto a C18 analytical column with a valve, and detected at 240 nm with a diode array detector. Metsulfuron methyl (MSM), and DPX-A 7881 were baseline separated with a mobile phase consisting of methanol and 67 mM KH2PO4-Na2HPO4 (pH 5.91) buffer (45+55, v+v) at a flow-rate of 1.0 ml min(-1). With an enrichment time of 10 min and enrichment sample volume of 20 ml, the enrichment factors and detection limits are 100 and 0.05 microg l(-1) for MSM, and 96 and 0.1 microg l(-1) for DPX-A 7881, respectively. The linear range and precision (RSD) are 0.1-50 microg l(-1) and 7.0% for MSM, and 0.2-50 microg l(-1) and 9.2% for DPX-A 7881, respectively. This proposed method was applied to determine MSM and DPX-A 7881 in seawater, tap water, and bottled mineral water with spiked recoveries in the range of 83-95% for MSM and 88-100% for DPX-A 7881, respectively.
