Entanglement is crucial for quantum networks and computation, yet maintaining high-fidelity entangled quantum states is hindered by decoherence and resource-intensive purification methods. Here, we experimentally demonstrate entanglement pumping, utilizing bosonic quantum error correction (QEC) codes as long-coherence-time storage qubits. By repetitively generating entanglement with short-coherence-time qubits and injecting it into QEC-protected logical qubits, our approach effectively preserves entanglement. Through error detection to discard error states and entanglement pumping to mitigate errors within the code space, we extend the lifespan of entangled logical qubits by nearly 50% compared to the case without entanglement pumping. This work highlights the potential of bosonic logical qubits for scalable quantum networks and introduces a novel paradigm for efficient entanglement management.

Thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) has emerged as a leading material platform for integrated nonlinear photonics, enabling transformative applications such as broadband Kerr soliton microcomb and high-speed electro-optic modulation. While stimulated Brillouin scattering has been numerically proposed in TFLN, achieving sufficient gain remains challenging due to the requirement for the simultaneous low optical and mechanical losses of the device. In this work, we systematically characterize the angle-dependence of Brillouin gain coefficients in x-cut membrane-suspended TFLN nanowaveguides, taking into account the anisotropy of the photoelastic coefficients in lithium niobate. We report a Brillouin gain coefficient of 129.5 m$^{-1}$W$^{-1}$ and further demonstrate the Brillouin frequency tuning through variations in either pump frequency or chip operating temperature. Based on the suspended TFLN nanowaveguide, by optimizing the confinement of both photonic and phononic modes, we have achieved a Brillouin amplifier with a record-high gain of 8.5 dB. This result not only validates the feasibility of strong guided Brillouin interaction using suspended TFLN nanowaveguides, but also paves the way for novel on-chip sensing and signal processing applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

A chip-integrated acousto-optic phase modulator tailored for visible optical wavelengths has been developed. Utilizing the lithium niobate on sapphire platform, the modulator employs a 7 GHz surface acoustic wave, excited by an interdigital transducer and aligned perpendicular to the waveguide. This design achieves efficient phase modulation of visible light within a compact device length of merely 200 microns, while holds the advantages of easy fabrication and high stability due to simple unsuspended structure. Remarkably, in this high-frequency acoustic regime, the acoustic wavelength becomes comparable to the optical wavelength, resulting in a notable single-sideband modulation behavior. This observation underscores the phase delay effects in the acousto-optics interactions, and opens up new aspects for realizing functional visible photonic devices and its integration with atom- and ion-based quantum platforms., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Quantum frequency converters that enable the interface between the itinerant photons and qubits are indispensable for realizing long-distance quantum network. However, the cascaded connection between converters and qubits usually brings additional insertion loss and intermediate noises. Here, we propose a cooperative quantum interface (CQI) that integrates the converter and qubit coupling into a single device for efficient long-distance entanglement generation. Compared to traditional cascaded systems, our scheme offers several advantages, including compactness, reduced insertion loss, and suppression of noise from intermediate modes. We prove the excellent performance over the separated devices by about two orders of magnitude for the entangled infidelity of two remote nodes. Moreover, we discuss an extended scheme for multiple remote nodes, revealing an exponential advantage in performance as the number of nodes increases. The cooperative effect is universal that can be further applied to multifunctional integrated quantum devices. Efficient microwave-to-optical frequency conversion (MOC) is crucial for applications such as radiometry, electrometry, quantum microwave illumination and quantum networks. Rydberg atoms provide a unique platform for realizing free-space MOC, promising wide-bandwidth, scalable, and flexible quantum interfaces. Here, we develop a theoretical framework to evaluate the system conversion efficiency, accounting for the mismatch between microwave and optical wavelengths comparing with the atomic ensemble size. Our analysis reveals that the conversion efficiency is fundamentally limited by the focusing of the free-space microwave field, with an upper bound of about 3/16 for diffraction-limited focusing. We propose using a microwave near-field antenna to overcome this limit. Post-selecting output states in measurements can effectively amplify weak signals and improve precision. However, post-selection effects may also introduce unintended biases in precision measurements. Here, we investigate the influence of post-selection in the precision spectroscopy of the $2^3S - 2^3P$ transition of helium ($^4$He) using an atomic beam. We directly observe that post-selection based on atomic positions causes a shift in the measured transition frequency, amounting to approximately -55 kHz. After accounting for this post-selection shift, we obtain a corrected frequency of $276,764,094,712.45 \pm 0.86$ kHz for the $2^3S_1 - 2^3P_0$ transition. Combining this result with existing data for $^3$He, we derive a new value for the difference in squared nuclear charge radii, $\delta r^2 [r_{h}^{2} - r_{\alpha}^{2}] = 1.0733 \pm 0.0021$ fm$^2$. This value shows a $2.8\sigma$ deviation from measurements of muonic helium ions, potentially pointing to new physics that challenges lepton universality in quantum electrodynamics., Comment: 14 pages including appendix

Precise control and manipulation of neutral atoms are essential for quantum technologies but largely dependent on conventional bulky optical setups. Here, we demonstrate a multifunctional metalens that integrates an achromatic lens with large numerical aperture, a quarter-wave plate, and a polarizer for trapping and characterizing single Rubidium atoms. The metalens simultaneously focuses a trapping beam at 852\,nm and collects single-photon fluorescence at 780\,nm. We observe a strong dependence of the trapping lifetime on an external bias magnetic field, suggests a complex interplay between the circularly polarized trapping light and the atom's internal states. Our work showcases the potential of metasurfaces in realizing compact and integrated quantum systems based on cold atoms, opening up new possibilities for studying quantum control and manipulation at the nanoscale., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Realizing large-scale quantum networks requires the generation of high-fidelity quantum entanglement states between remote quantum nodes, a key resource for quantum communication, distributed computation and sensing applications. However, entanglement distribution between quantum network nodes is hindered by optical transmission loss and local operation errors. Here, we propose a novel quantum repeater architecture that synergistically integrates Rydberg atom quantum processors with optical cavities to overcome these challenges. Our scheme leverages cavity-mediated interactions for efficient remote entanglement generation, followed by Rydberg interaction-based entanglement purification and swapping. Numerical simulations, incorporating realistic experimental parameters, demonstrate the generation of Bell states with 99\% fidelity at rates of 1.1\,kHz between two nodes in local-area network (distance $0.1\,\mathrm{km}$), and can be extend to metropolitan-area ($25\,\mathrm{km}$) or intercity ($\mathrm{250\,\mathrm{km}}$, with the assitance of frequency converters) network with a rate of 0.1\,kHz. This scalable approach opens up near-term opportunities for exploring quantum network applications and investigating the advantages of distributed quantum information processing., Comment: 3 figures

Quantum metrology with nonclassical states offers a promising route to improved precision in physical measurements. The quantum effects of Schr{\"o}dinger-cat superpositions or entanglements allow measurement uncertainties to reach below the standard quantum limit. However, the challenge in keeping a long coherence time for such nonclassical states often prevents full exploitation of the quantum advantage in metrology. Here we demonstrate a long-lived Schr{\"o}dinger-cat state of optically trapped $^{173}$Yb (\textit{I}\ =\ 5/2) atoms. The cat state, a superposition of two oppositely-directed and furthest-apart spin states, is generated by a non-linear spin rotation. Protected in a decoherence-free subspace against inhomogeneous light shifts of an optical lattice, the cat state achieves a coherence time of $1.4(1)\times 10^3$ s. A magnetic field is measured with Ramsey interferometry, demonstrating a scheme of Heisenberg-limited metrology for atomic magnetometry, quantum information processing, and searching for new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Engineering high-order nonlinearities while suppressing lower-order terms is crucial for quantum error correction and state control in bosonic systems, yet it remains an outstanding challenge. Here, we introduce a general framework of Nonlinearity-Engineered Multi-loop SQUID (NEMS) device, enabling the realization of arbitrary nonlinearities by tuning fluxes in multiple loops within superconducting circuits. We demonstrate specific examples of NEMS devices that selectively engineer pure cubic, quartic, and quintic interactions with suppressed parasitic couplings, showing great promise for realizing Kerr-cat bias-preserving {\scshape cnot} gates and stabilizing four-leg cat qubits. By opening new avenues for tailoring nonlinear Hamiltonians of superconducting devices, this work enables sophisticated and precise manipulation of bosonic modes, with potential applications in quantum computation, simulation, and sensing., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures

The switching and control of optical fields based on nonlinear optical effects are often limited to relatively weak nonlinear susceptibility and strong optical pump fields. Here, an optical medium with programmable susceptibility tensor based on polarizable atoms is proposed. Under a structured optical pump, the ground state population of atoms could be efficiently controlled by tuning the chirality and intensity of optical fields, and thus the optical response of the medium is programmable in both space and time. We demonstrate the potential of this approach by engineering the spatial distribution of the complex susceptibility tensor of the medium in photonic structures to realize nonreciprocal optical effects. Specifically, we investigate the advantages of chiral interaction between atoms and photons in an atom-cladded waveguide, theoretically showing that reconfigurable, strong, and fastly switchable isolation of optical signals in a selected optical mode is possible. The susceptibility-programmable medium provides a promising way to efficiently control the optical field, opening up a wide range of applications for integrated photonic devices and structured optics., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

The noise-biased Kerr-cat qubit is an attractive candidate for fault-tolerant quantum computation; however, its initialization faces challenges due to the squeezing pump-induced frequency shift (PIFS). Here, we propose and demonstrate a dynamic compensation method to mitigate the effect of PIFS during the Kerr-cat qubit initialization. Utilizing a novel nonlinearity-engineered triple-loop SQUID device, we realize a stabilized Kerr-cat qubit and validate the advantages of the dynamic compensation method by improving the initialization fidelity from 57% to 78%, with a projected fidelity of 91% after excluding state preparation and measurement errors. Our results not only advance the practical implementation of Kerr-cat qubits, but also provide valuable insights into the fundamental adiabatic dynamics of these systems. This work paves the way for scalable quantum processors that leverage the bias-preserving properties of Kerr-cat qubits.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel protocol for transferring quantum states between superconducting cavities using only continuous two-mode squeezing interactions, without exchange of photonic excitations between cavities. This approach conceptually resembles quantum teleportation, where quantum information is transferred between different nodes without directly transmitting carrier photons. In contrast to the discrete operations of entanglement and Bell-state measurement in teleportation, our scheme is symmetric and continuous. We experimentally realize coherent and bidirectional transfer of arbitrary quantum states, including bosonic quantum error correction codes. Our results offer new insights into the quantum state transfer and quantum teleportation. In particular, our demonstration validates a new approach to realize quantum transducers, and might find applications in a wide range of physical platforms.

On-chip micro-ring resonators (MRRs) have been proposed for constructing delay reservoir computing (RC) systems, offering a highly scalable, high-density computational architecture that is easy to manufacture. However, most proposed RC schemes have utilized passive integrated optical components based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI), and RC systems based on lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) have not yet been reported. The nonlinear optical effects exhibited by lithium niobate microphotonic devices introduce new possibilities for RC design. In this work, we design an RC scheme based on a series-coupled MRR array, leveraging the unique interplay between thermo-optic nonlinearity and photorefractive effects in lithium niobate. We first demonstrate the existence of three regions defined by wavelength detuning between the primary LNOI micro-ring resonator and the coupled micro-ring array, where one region achieves an optimal balance between nonlinearity and high memory capacity at extremely low input energy, leading to superior computational performance. We then discuss in detail the impact of each ring's nonlinearity and the system's symbol duration on performance. Finally, we design a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) based multi-task parallel computing scheme, showing that the computational performance for multiple tasks matches that of single-task computations., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Quantum state tomography, a process that reconstructs a quantum state from measurements on an ensemble of identically prepared copies, plays a crucial role in benchmarking quantum devices. However, brute-force approaches to quantum state tomography would become impractical for large systems, as the required resources scale exponentially with the system size. Here, we explore a machine learning approach and report an experimental demonstration of reconstructing quantum states based on neural network generative models with an array of programmable superconducting transmon qubits. In particular, we experimentally prepare the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states and random states up to five qubits and demonstrate that the machine learning approach can efficiently reconstruct these states with the number of required experimental samples scaling linearly with system size. Our results experimentally showcase the intriguing potential for exploiting machine learning techniques in validating and characterizing complex quantum devices, offering a valuable guide for the future development of quantum technologies.

The discrimination of quantum operations has long been an intriguing challenge, with theoretical research significantly advancing our understanding of the quantum features in discriminating quantum objects. This challenge is closely related to the discrimination of quantum states, and proof-of-principle demonstrations of the latter have already been realized using optical photons. However, the experimental demonstration of discriminating general quantum operations, including both unitary and non-unitary operations, has remained elusive. In general quantum systems, especially those with high dimensions, the preparation of arbitrary quantum states and the implementation of arbitrary quantum operations and generalized measurements are non-trivial tasks. Here, for the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the optimal unambiguous discrimination of up to 6 displacement operators and the unambiguous discrimination of non-unitary quantum operations. We report an experimental demonstration of resonance fluorescence in a two-level superconducting artificial atom under two driving fields coupled to a detuned cavity. One of the fields is classical and the other is varied from quantum (vacuum fluctuations) to classical one by controlling the photon number inside the cavity. The device consists of a transmon qubit strongly coupled to a one-dimensional transmission line and a coplanar waveguide resonator. We observe a sideband anti-crossing and asymmetry in the emission spectra of the system through a one-dimensional transmission line, which is fundamentally different from the weak coupling case. By changing the photon number inside the cavity, the emission spectrum of our doubly driven system approaches to the case when the atom is driven by two classical bichromatic fields. We also measure the dynamical evolution of the system through the transmission line and study the properties of the first-order correlation function, Rabi oscillations and energy relaxation in the system. The study of resonance fluorescence from an atom driven by two fields promotes understanding decoherence in superconducting quantum circuits and may find applications in superconducting quantum computing and quantum networks.

Single atoms trapped in tightly focused optical dipole traps provide an excellent experimental platform for quantum computing, precision measurement, and fundamental physics research. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a novel approach to enhancing the loading of single atoms by introducing a weak ancillary dipole beam. The loading rate of single atoms in a dipole trap can be significantly improved by only a few tens of microwatts of counter-propagating beam. It was also demonstrated that multiple atoms could be loaded with the assistance of a counter-propagating beam. By reducing the power requirements for trapping single atoms and enabling the trapping of multiple atoms, our method facilitates the extension of single-atom arrays and the investigation of collective light-atom interactions., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The stabilization of optical frequency comb conventionally relies on active electronic feedback loops and stable frequency references. Here, we propose a new approach for autonomous frequency locking (AFL) to generate a zero-offset frequency comb based on cooperative nonlinear optical processes in a microcavity. In a simplified few-mode system, AFL enables the concept of fractional harmonic generation as a zero-offset multi-laser reference for measuring the carrier envelope offset frequency ($f_{\mathrm{ceo}}$) of frequency combs spanning less than one octave, such as 1/3 octave. Combining with Kerr comb generation in a microcaivity, AFL is further applied to directly generate zero-$f_{\mathrm{ceo}}$ soliton comb that is robust against fluctuations in pump laser and cavity resonances. Numerical simulations validate the AFL scheme, showing good agreement with analytical prediction of the locking condition. This work presents a new pathway for exploring novel frequency locking mechanisms and technologies using integrated photonic devices, and also appeals further investigations of cooperative nonlinear optics processes in microcavities.

In practical sensing tasks, noise is usually regarded as an obstruction to better performance and will degrade the sensitivity. Fortunately, \textit{stochastic resonance} (SR), a counterintuitive concept, can utilize noise to greatly enhance the detected signal amplitude. Although fundamentally important as a mechanism of weak signal amplification, and has been continually explored in geological, biological, and physical science, both theoretically and experimentally, SR has yet to be demonstrated in realistic sensing tasks. Here we develop a novel SR-based nonlinear sensor using a thermal ensemble of interacting Rydberg atoms. With the assistance of stochastic noise (either inherently in the system or added externally) and strong nonlinearity in the Rydberg ensembles, the signal encoded in a weak MW field is greatly enhanced (over 25 dB). Moreover, we show that the SR-based atomic sensor can achieve a better sensitivity in our system, which is over 6.6 dB compared to a heterodye atomic sensor. Our results show potential advantage of SR-based MW sensors in commercial or defense-related applications.

Photonics offer numerous functionalities that can be used to realize astrophotonic instruments. The most spectacular example to date is the ESO Gravity instrument at the Very Large Telescope in Chile. Integrated astrophotonic devices stand to offer critical advantages for instrument development, including extreme miniaturization, as well as integration, superior thermal and mechanical stabilization owing to the small footprint, and high replicability offering cost savings. Numerous astrophotonic technologies have been developed to address shortcomings of conventional instruments to date, including for example the development of photonic lanterns, complex aperiodic fiber Bragg gratings, complex beam combiners to enable long baseline interferometry, and laser frequency combs for high precision spectral calibration of spectrometers. Despite these successes, the facility implementation of photonic solutions in astronomical instrumentation is currently limited because of (1) low throughputs from coupling to fibers, coupling fibers to chips, propagation and bend losses, device losses, etc, (2) difficulties with scaling to large channel count devices needed for large bandwidths and high resolutions, and (3) efficient integration of photonics with detectors, to name a few. In this roadmap, we identify 24 areas that need further development. We outline the challenges and advances needed across those areas covering design tools, simulation capabilities, fabrication processes, the need for entirely new components, integration and hybridization and the characterization of devices. To realize these advances the astrophotonics community will have to work cooperatively with industrial partners who have more advanced manufacturing capabilities. On-chip microring resonators (MRRs) have been proposed to construct the time-delayed reservoir computing (RC), which offers promising configurations available for computation with high scalability, high-density computing, and easy fabrication. A single MRR, however, is inadequate to supply enough memory for the computational task with diverse memory requirements. Large memory needs are met by the MRR with optical feedback waveguide, but at the expense of its large footprint. In the structure, the ultra-long optical feedback waveguide substantially limits the scalable photonic RC integrated designs. In this paper, a time-delayed RC is proposed by utilizing a silicon-based nonlinear MRR in conjunction with an array of linear MRRs. These linear MRRs possess a high quality factor, providing sufficient memory capacity for the entire system. We quantitatively analyze and assess the proposed RC structure's performance on three classical tasks with diverse memory requirements, i.e., the Narma 10, Mackey-Glass, and Santa Fe chaotic timeseries prediction tasks. The proposed system exhibits comparable performance to the MRR with an ultra-long optical feedback waveguide-based system when it comes to handling the Narma 10 task, which requires a significant memory capacity. Nevertheless, the overall length of these linear MRRs is significantly smaller, by three orders of magnitude, compared to the ultra-long feedback waveguide in the MRR with optical feedback waveguide-based system. The compactness of this structure has significant implications for the scalability and seamless integration of photonic RC.

Quantum interference between identical single particles reveals the intrinsic quantum statistic nature of particles, which could not be interpreted through classical physics. Here, we demonstrate quantum interference between non-identical bosons using a generalized beam splitter based on a quantum memory. The Hong-Ou-Mandel type interference between single photons and single magnons with high visibility is demonstrated, and the crossover from the bosonic to fermionic quantum statistics is observed by tuning the beam splitter to be non-Hermitian. Moreover, multi-particle interference that simulates the behavior of three fermions by three input photons is realized. Photon-number resolving detectors with hundreds of pixels are now readily available, while the characterization of these detectors using detector tomography is computationally intensive. Here, we present a modified detector tomography model that reduces the number of variables that need optimization. To evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of our model, we reconstruct the photon number distribution of optical coherent and thermal states using the expectation-maximization-entropy algorithm. Our results indicate that the fidelity of the reconstructed states remains above 99%, and the second and third-order correlations agree well with the theoretical values for a mean number of photons up to 100. We also investigate the computational resources required for detector tomography and find out that our approach reduces the solving time by around a half compared to the standard detector tomography approach, and the required memory resources are the main obstacle for detector tomography of a large number of pixels. Our results suggest that detector tomography is viable on a supercomputer with 1~TB RAM for detectors with up to 340 pixels.

A free-space-to-chip pipeline is proposed to efficiently transport single atoms from a magneto-optical trap to an on-chip evanescent field trap. Due to the reflection of the dipole laser on the chip surface, the conventional conveyor belt approach can only transport atoms close to the chip surface but with a distance of about one wavelength, which prevents efficient interaction between the atom and the on-chip waveguide devices. Here, based on a two-layer photonic chip architecture, a diffraction beam of the integrated grating with an incident angle of the Brewster angle is utilized to realize free-space-to-chip atom pipeline. Numerical simulation verified that the reflection of the dipole laser is suppressed and that the atoms can be brought to the chip surface with a distance of only 100nm. Therefore, the pipeline allows a smooth transport of atoms from free space to the evanescent field trap of waveguides and promises a reliable atom source for a hybrid photonic-atom chip., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Trapped atoms on photonic structures inspire many novel quantum devices for quantum information processing and quantum sensing. Here, we have demonstrated a hybrid photonic-atom chip platform based on a GaN-on-sapphire chip and the transport of an ensemble of atoms from free space towards the chip with an optical conveyor belt. The maximum transport efficiency of atoms is about 50% with a transport distance of 500 $\mathrm{\mu m}$. Our results open up a new route toward the efficiently loading of cold atoms into the evanescent-field trap formed by the photonic integrated circuits, which promises strong and controllable interactions between single atoms and single photons., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

For the applications of the frequency comb in microresonators, it is essential to obtain a fully frequency-stabilized microcomb laser source. Here, we demonstrate an atom-referenced stabilized soliton microcomb generation system based on the integrated microring resonator. The pump light around $1560.48\,\mathrm{nm}$ locked to an ultra-low-expansion (ULE) cavity, is frequency-doubled and referenced to the atomic transition of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$. The repetition rate of the soliton microcomb is injection-locked to an atomic-clock-stabilized radio frequency (RF) source, leading to mHz stabilization at $1$ seconds. As a result, all comb lines have been frequency-stabilized based on the atomic reference and could be determined with very high precision reaching $\sim18\,\mathrm{Hz}$ at 1 second, corresponding to the frequency stability of $9.5\times10^{-14}$. Our approach provides an integrated and fully stabilized microcomb experiment scheme with no requirement of $f-2f$ technique, which could be easily implemented and generalized to various photonic platforms, thus paving the way towards the portable and ultraprecise optical sources for high precision spectroscopy., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

The error probability of block codes sent under a non-uniform input distribution over the memoryless binary symmetric channel (BSC) and decoded via the maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding rule is investigated. It is proved that the ratio of the probability of MAP decoder ties to the probability of error when no MAP decoding ties occur grows at most linearly in blocklength, thus showing that decoder ties do not affect the code's error exponent. This result generalizes a similar recent result shown for the case of block codes transmitted over the BSC under a uniform input distribution.

Entanglement represents one of the most important conceptual advances in physics during the last century and is also one of the most essential resources in quantum information science. However, entanglement is fragile and its potential advantages in applications are hindered by decoherence in practice. Here, we experimentally realize entangled logical qubits (ELQ) with a bosonic quantum module by encoding quantum information into spatially separated microwave modes. The entanglement is protected by repetitive quantum error correction, and the coherence time of the purified ELQ via error detection is improved by 45$\%$ compared with the unprotected ELQ and exceeds that of the entangled physical qubits. In addition, violation of the Bell inequality by logical qubits is demonstrated for the first time with the measured Bell signal B=2.250$\pm$0.019 after purification, surpassing the classical bound by 13 standard deviations. Deep learning and quantum computing have achieved dramatic progresses in recent years. The interplay between these two fast-growing fields gives rise to a new research frontier of quantum machine learning. In this work, we report the first experimental demonstration of training deep quantum neural networks via the backpropagation algorithm with a six-qubit programmable superconducting processor. In particular, we show that three-layer deep quantum neural networks can be trained efficiently to learn two-qubit quantum channels with a mean fidelity up to 96.0% and the ground state energy of molecular hydrogen with an accuracy up to 93.3% compared to the theoretical value. In addition, six-layer deep quantum neural networks can be trained in a similar fashion to achieve a mean fidelity up to 94.8% for learning single-qubit quantum channels. Our experimental results explicitly showcase the advantages of deep quantum neural networks, including quantum analogue of the backpropagation algorithm and less stringent coherence-time requirement for their constituting physical qubits, thus providing a valuable guide for quantum machine learning applications with both near-term and future quantum devices., Comment: 7 pages (main text) + 11 pages (Supplementary Information), 10 figures

Quantum error correction (QEC) aims to protect logical qubits from noises by utilizing the redundancy of a large Hilbert space, where an error, once it occurs, can be detected and corrected in real time. In most QEC codes, a logical qubit is encoded in some discrete variables, e.g., photon numbers. Such encoding schemes make the codewords orthogonal, so that the encoded quantum information can be unambiguously extracted after processing. Based on such discrete-variable encodings, repetitive QEC demonstrations have been reported on various platforms, but there the lifetime of the encoded logical qubit is still shorter than that of the best available physical qubit in the entire system, which represents a break-even point that needs to be surpassed for any QEC code to be of practical use. Here we demonstrate a QEC procedure with a logical qubit encoded in photon-number states of a microwave cavity, dispersively coupled to an ancilla superconducting qubit. By applying a pulse featuring a tailored frequency comb to the ancilla, we can repetitively extract the error syndrome with high fidelity and perform error correction with feedback control accordingly, thereby exceeding the break-even point by about 16% lifetime enhancement. Single atoms are interesting candidates for studying quantum optics and quantum information processing. Recently, trapping and manipulation of single atoms using tight optical dipole traps have generated considerable interest. Here we report an experimental investigation of the dynamics of atoms in a modified optical dipole trap with a backward propagating dipole trap beam, where a change in the two-atom collision rate by six times has been achieved. The theoretical model presented gives a prediction of high probabilities of few-atom loading rates under proper experimental conditions. Non-reciprocal optical components are indispensable in optical applications, and their realization without any magnetic field arose increasing research interests in photonics. Exciting experimental progress has been achieved by either introducing spatial-temporal modulation of the optical medium or combining Kerr-type optical nonlinearity with spatial asymmetry in photonic structures. However, extra driving fields are required for the first approach, while the isolation of noise and the transmission of the signal cannot be simultaneously achieved for the other approach. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a new concept of nonlinear non-reciprocal susceptibility for optical media and realize the completely passive isolation of optical signals without any external bias field. The self-induced isolation by the input signal is demonstrated with an extremely high isolation ratio of 63.4 dB, a bandwidth of 2.1 GHz for 60 dB isolation, and a low insertion loss of around 1 dB. Furthermore, novel functional optical devices are realized, including polarization purification and non-reciprocal leverage. The demonstrated nonlinear non-reciprocity provides a versatile tool to control light and deepen our understanding of light-matter interactions, and enables applications ranging from topological photonics to unidirectional quantum information transfer in a network., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Non-Hermitian (NH) extension of quantum-mechanical Hamiltonians represents one of the most significant advancements in physics. During the past two decades, numerous captivating NH phenomena have been revealed and demonstrated, but all of which can appear in both quantum and classical systems. This leads to the fundamental question: what NH signature presents a radical departure from classical physics? The solution of this problem is indispensable for exploring genuine NH quantum mechanics, but remains experimentally untouched so far. Here, we resolve this basic issue by unveiling distinct exceptional entanglement phenomena, exemplified by an entanglement transition, occurring at the exceptional point of NH interacting quantum systems. We illustrate and demonstrate such purely quantum-mechanical NH effects with a naturally dissipative light-matter system, engineered in a circuit quantum electrodynamics architecture. Our results lay the foundation for studies of genuinely quantum-mechanical NH physics, signified by exceptional-point-enabled entanglement behaviors.
