Abstract: International audience; Contrary to molecular species, only very few solids are reported to host manganese (V) species. Herein, we report three new compounds with a hydroxyapatite structural backbone built on the Mn V O 4 3− anion: Sr 5 [(Mn 1−x Si x)O 4 ] 3 (OH) 1−3x (x =0 and 0.053), Sr 5 (MnO 4) 3 (OH) 1−y F y (y = 0.90), and Sr 5 [(Mn 1−x Si x)-O 4 ] 3 F 1−3x (x = 0.058). These solids are fully characterized using powder X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), thermogravimetric analysis, and magnetic measurements. Especially, we report for the first time EELS Mn−L 2,3 spectra of manganese with the oxidation state (V). Contrary to other Mn(V) oxides, these solids and the nominal compound Sr 5 (MnO 4) 3 OH do not comprise Ba 2+ cations but rely only on Sr 2+ cations, showing that barium is not a required element to stabilize Mn(V) species in inorganic solids. We show that by tuning soft chemistry conditions on the one hand and post-treatment topological transformation conditions on the other hand, Mn(V) and hydroxyl groups can be substituted by Si(IV) and fluoride ions, respectively. Hence, we deliver solids with a potentially wide composition range. These compounds show significant oxygen anionic conduction, thus suggesting the emergence of new functional materials built from high-oxidation state manganese cations.

Abstract: International audience; The formation of iron phosphide nanoparticles (FexP) is a well‐studied process. It usually uses air‐sensitive phosphorus precursors such as n‐trioctylphosphine or white phosphorus. In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of a remarkably stable tetrakis(acyl)cyclotetraphosphane, P4(MesCO)4. We demonstrate that this compound can be used as a stoichiometric source of P(0) species in order to synthesize FeP and Fe2P nanoparticles at only 250 °C. This tunable process provides a route to monodisperse nanoparticles with different compositions and crystallinities. We combine X‐Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic pair distribution function (PDF) to study the local order and bonding in the amorphous and crystalline materials. We show that crystalline FeP forms via an intermediate amorphous phase (obtained at a lower temperature) that presents local order similar to that of the crystalline sample. We explore their electrocatalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in acidic and neutral electrolytes. In both electrolytes, amorphous FeP is a more efficient catalyst than crystalline FeP, itself more efficient than crystalline Fe2P. Our study paves the way for a more systematic investigation of amorphous metal phosphide phases in electrocatalysis. It also shows the beneficial use of PDF on the highly challenging characterization of amorphous nanomaterials.

Abstract: The internal structure of nanostructured pyrolyzed SiBOC glasses has been analyzed using a combination of transmission electron microscopy techniques including high resolution imaging, EELS spectroscopy and 3D imaging. For the first time, we provide direct information on the 3D architecture within such complex glasses containing SiC nanograins, silica-rich and carbon nanodomains. Their sizes and relative 3D distribution have been precisely quantified. It was shown that the SiC nanocrystals and the silica-rich domains exhibit different types of connectivities with the graphitic carbon network. A direct evidence of the existence of “covalent” bridges between the edges of graphitic nanoplatelets and the SiC nanocrystals is provided. In addition, it was demonstrated that the silica rich domains are not covalently bonded to the graphitic platelets. As a consequence, this amorphous phase can be dissolved into HF and may generate a bimodal porosity, in strong relationship with the initial nanostructure of the SiBOC glass specimen.

Abstract: We report on a comparative study of photonic sensitivities of organic-inorganic hybrids prepared with size-selected 5 nm titanium-oxo-alkoxo nanoparticles and two different organic phases: HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and MAPTMS (3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane). After organic polymerization, the obtained pHEMA-TiO2 and pMAPTMS-TiO2 hybrids are solids with different inter-component bindings. While surface exchange fixes organic (HEMA than pHEMA) groups on the nanoparticle surface, the titanium-oxo-alkoxo nanoparticles do not interact with the organic component in the pMAPTMS-TiO2 hydrid. Indeed, MAPTMS molecules are hydrolyzed forming condensed Si O Si species. The formation of Si O Ti bonds is observed at the organic thermal polymerization stage, which may be a signature of the silica layer formation at the particles surface. Consequently, the quantum efficiency of the photoinduced charge separation and storage in pMAPTMS-TiO2 hybrids is found considerably lower compared to that in pHEMA-TiO2 hybrids. The 3D micro-structuring of the hybrid solutions has been realized using 2-photon laser polymerization. The structures were mechanically more stable and easier to achieve in pMAPTMS-TiO2 compared to pHEMA-TiO2. Moreover, higher density of the photoinduced electrons decreases the damage threshold in the pHEMA-TiO2 hybrids.

Abstract: Here, we present a correlative microscopic analysis of electrodeposited films from catechol solutions in aqueous electrolytes. The films were prepared in a miniaturized electrochemical cell and were analyzed by identical location transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Thanks to this combined approach, we have shown that the electrodeposited films are constituted of ultrathin graphite oxide nanosheets. Detailed information about the electronic structure of the films was obtained by X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy. These results show the large potential of soft electrochemical conditions for the bottom-up production of ultrathin graphite oxide nanosheet films via a one-pot green chemistry approach from simple organic building blocks.

Abstract: International audience; We report phase selective synthesis of intermetallic nickel silicide nanocrystals in inorganic molten salts. NiSi and Ni2Si nanocrystals are obtained by reacting a nickel (II) salt and sodium silicide Na4Si4 in the molten LiI-KI inorganic eutectic salt mixture. We report that nickel silicide nanocrystals are precursors to active electrocatalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and may be low-cost alternatives to iridium-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract: International audience; Living tissues, heterogeneous at the microscale, usually scatter light. Strong scattering is responsible for the whiteness of bones, teeth, and brain and is known to limit severely the performances of biomedical optical imaging. Transparency is also found within collagen-based extracellular tissues such as decalcified ivory, fish scales, or cornea. However, its physical origin is still poorly understood. Here, we unveil the presence of a gap of transparency in scattering fibrillar collagen matrices within a narrow range of concentration in the phase diagram. This precholesteric phase presents a three-dimensional (3D) orientational order biomimetic of that in natural tissues. By quantitatively studying the relation between the 3D fibrillar network and the optical and mechanical properties of the macroscopic matrices, we show that transparency results from structural partial order inhibiting light scattering, while preserving mechanical stability, stiffness, and nonlinearity. The striking similarities between synthetic and natural materials provide insights for better understanding the occurring transparency.

Abstract: International audience; Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have seen a fast development as drug delivery carriers thanks to their tunable porosity and high loading capacity. The employ of MSNs in biomedical applications requires a good understanding of their degradation behavior both to control drug release and to assess possible toxicity issues on human health. In this work, we study mesoporous silica degradation in biologically relevant conditions through in situ ellipsometry on model mesoporous nanoparticle or continuous thin films, in buffer solution and in media containing proteins. In order to shed light on the structure/dissolution relationship, we performed dissolution experiments far from soluble silicate species saturation. Via a complete decorrelation of dissolution and diffusion contributions, we proved unambiguously that surface area of silica vectors is the main parameter influencing dissolution kinetics, while thermal treatment and open mesoporous network architecture have a minor impact. As a logical consequence of our dissolution model, we proved that the dissolution lag-time can be promoted by selective blocking of the mesopores that limits the access to the mesoporous internal surface. This study was broadened by studying the impact of the organosilanes in the silica structure, of the presence of residual structuring agents, and of the chemical composition of the dissolution medium. The presence of albumin at blood concentration was found affecting drastically the dissolution kinetics of the mesoporous structure, acting as a diffusion barrier. Globally, we could identify the main factors affecting mesoporous silica materials degradation and proved that we can tune their structure and composition for adjusting dissolution kinetics in order to achieve efficient drug delivery.

Abstract: International audience; Porous noble metal nanostructures providing high surface areas and large pore volumes are attractive for numerous applications especially catalysis. However, the synthesis of such architectures with nanoscale features is challenging because of i.e high surface energy. Previous reports are based on multi-step synthetic approaches with low yield thus not compatible with industrial scale. Herein, we demonstrate that hierarchical nanostructured noble metals and alloys, with thermal stability up to 800 °C, can be fabricated by a high throughput, green and straightforward aerosol-assisted synthesis using bi-functional reducing templates. We unravel the reduction mechanism at the solid/solid interface at the single-particle level using state-of-the-art techniques such as in situ Transmission Electron Microscopy, in situ synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We propose a mechanism based on a radical process thermally triggered by the depolymerization of organic components. From a fundamental point of view, this study sheds light on the reduction processes of noble metals in the presence of organic compounds with important fundamental implications for catalysis and electrocatalysis.

Abstract: International audience; Alkali cations are required for the colloidal synthesis of Ln$_2$O$_2$S nanoplates in organic solvent. Based on a thorough experimental analysis using various lanthanides and three alkali ions, we challenge the commonly accepted scenario of partial lanthanide substitution by the alkali, which is supposed to favor the sulfide insertion over the oxide one. Using SAXS-WAXS on aliquots taken from the synthesis medium, we demonstrate the formation of an alkali-stabilized oleate mesophase acting as a template for nanoparticles nucleation and growth. As a consequence, the alkali is not incorporated into the crystalline structure; nanoparticle growth requires only a low alkali concentration that can be readily washed away from the final nanoparticles powder. We expect that similar mesophases may form in other colloidal synthesis using oleates and small cations.

Abstract: In the field of heterogeneous catalysis, the successful integration of enzymes and inorganic catalysts could pave the way to multifunctional materials which are able to perform advanced cascade reactions. However, such combination is not straightforward, for example in the case of zeolite catalysts for which enzyme immobilization is restricted to the external surface. Herein, this challenge is overcome by developing a new kind of hybrid catalyst based on hollow zeolite microspheres obtained by the aerosol-assisted assembly of zeolite nanocrystals. The latter spheres possess open entry-ways for enzymes, which are then loaded and cross-linked to form cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs), securing their entrapment. This controlled design allows the combination of all the decisive features of the zeolite with a high enzyme loading. A chemo-enzymatic reaction is demonstrated, where the structured zeolite material is used both as a nest for the enzyme and as an efficient inorganic catalyst. Glucose oxidase (GOx) ensures the in situ production of H2O2 subsequently utilized by the TS-1 zeolite to catalyze the epoxidation of allylic alcohol toward glycidol. The strategy can also be used to entrap other enzymes or combination of enzymes, as demonstrated here with combi-CLEAs of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and glucose oxidase. We anticipate that this strategy will open up new perspectives, leveraging on the spray-drying (aerosol) technique to shape microparticles from various nano-building blocks and on the entrapment of biological macromolecules to obtain new multifunctional hybrid microstructures., A spray drying technique is used to prepare hollow zeolite microparticles into which an enzyme can be entrapped. Via this “Lego-like” strategy, we create hybrid heterogeneous catalysts that can run multistep chemo-enzymatic cascade reactions.

Abstract: International audience; Static and dynamic magnetic properties of Zn0.4Fe2.6O4 nanoparticles synthesized by thermal decomposition have been investigated. Two ranges of diameter have been used: small particles (diameter about 6.2 nm) and larger ones (diameter about 22.4 nm). The nanoparticle microstructure has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The temperature dependence of the zero-field dynamic permeability for both nanoparticle sizes has been studied, revealing a superparamagnetic state for the small ones. Effects of the nanoparticle size on the dynamic permeability have been studied, and linked to the superparamagnetic state. A dynamic susceptibility model has been found to reproduce the experimental behavior as well as its temperature dependence.

Abstract: International audience; Inorganic molten salts are known as fluxes for the synthesis of novel bulk inorganic compounds and of mesostructures and nanostructures with crystal habits different from those observed in more conventional solvents. However, they have not demonstrated the ability to provide mesostructures and nanostructures of complex metal oxides that are currently unreported at the mesoscale and nanoscale. In this report, we show the first occurrence of Sr4Mn3O10 at the mesoscale, as platelets synthesized in molten strontium hydroxide at 600 °C with basal faces of few hundreds of nanometers and thicknesses ranging from 20 to 100 nm. We address carefully the atom-scale structure by transmission electron microscopy, including electron energy loss spectroscopy and electron tomography. We then propose that the final morphology is driven by the surface charge of each facet through surface energy. The reactivity of these platelets is then addressed, highlighting cation leaching when in contact with acidic water, which results in crystalline–amorphous core–shell platelets that are active electrocatalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction.

Abstract: International audience; We report on the in situ analysis of the growth process of carbon nanostructures catalyzed by Ru nanoparticles using syngas, a mixture of hydrogen and CO, as the carbon source at a medium temperature (500 °C). The structural modifications of the dual nanotube/nanoparticle system and the general dynamics of the involved processes have been directly followed during the growth, in real time and at the atomic scale, by transmission electron microscopy in an environmental gas cell at atmospheric pressure. After a reduction step under hydrogen and syngas, the particles became very active for the carbon growth. The growth rate is independent of the particle size which mainly influences the nanotube wall thickness. Other subtle information on the general behavior of the system has been obtained, as for instance the fact that the regular changes in the direction of the particle originate generally from the particle shape fluctuation. The main result is the evidence of a new growth mode in relation to the presence and the high instability of the ruthenium carbide phase which acts as a carbon reservoir. For the first time, a relaxation oscillation of the growth rate has been observed and correlated with the metal–carbide structural transition at the particle sub-surface.

Abstract: International audience; Aerosol processing is long known and implemented industrially to obtain various types of divided materials and nanomaterials. The atomisation of a liquid solution or suspension produces a mist of aerosol droplets which can then be transformed via a diversity of processes including spray-drying, spray pyrolysis, flame spray pyrolysis, thermal decomposition, micronisation, gas atomisation, etc. The attractive technical features of these aerosol processes make them highly interesting for the continuous, large scale, and tailored production of heterogeneous catalysts. Indeed, during aerosol processing, each liquid droplet undergoes well-controlled physical and chemical transformations, allowing for example to dry and aggregate pre-existing solid particles or to synthesise new micro- or nanoparticles from mixtures of molecular or colloidal precursors. In the last two decades, more advanced reactive aerosol processes have emerged as innovative means to synthesise tailored-made nanomaterials with tunable surface properties, textures, compositions, etc. In particular, the “aerosol-assisted sol–gel” process (AASG) has demonstrated tremendous potential for the preparation of high-performance heterogeneous catalysts. The method is mainly based on the low-cost, scalable, and environmentally benign sol–gel chemistry process, often coupled with the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) concept. It allows producing micronic or submicronic, inorganic or hybrid organic–inorganic particles bearing tuneable and calibrated porous structures at different scales. In addition, pre-formed nanoparticles can be easily incorporated or formed in a “one-pot” bottom-up approach within the porous inorganic or hybrid spheres produced by such spray drying method. Thus, multifunctional catalysts with tailored catalytic activities can be prepared in a relatively simple way. This account is an overview of aerosol processed heterogeneous catalysts which demonstrated interesting performance in various relevant chemical reactions like isomerisation, hydrogenation, olefin metathesis, pollutant total oxidation, selective oxidation, CO2 methanation, etc. A short survey of patents and industrial applications is also presented. Our objective is to demonstrate the tremendous possibilities offered by the coupling between bottom up synthesis routes and these aerosol processing technologies which will most probably represent a major route of innovation in the mushrooming field of catalyst preparation research.

Abstract: Owing to their immense potential in energy conversion and storage, catalysis, photocatalysis, adsorption, separation and life science applications, significant interest has been devoted to the design and synthesis of hierarchically porous materials. The hierarchy of materials on porosity, structural, morphological, and component levels is key for high performance in all kinds of applications. Synthesis and applications of hierarchically structured porous materials have become a rapidly evolving field of current interest. A large series of synthesis methods have been developed. This review addresses recent advances made in studies of this topic. After identifying the advantages and problems of natural hierarchically porous materials, synthetic hierarchically porous materials are presented. The synthesis strategies used to prepare hierarchically porous materials are first introduced and the features of synthesis and the resulting structures are presented using a series of examples. These involve templating methods (surfactant templating, nanocasting, macroporous polymer templating, colloidal crystal templating and bioinspired process, i.e. biotemplating), conventional techniques (supercritical fluids, emulsion, freeze-drying, breath figures, selective leaching, phase separation, zeolitization process, and replication) and basic methods (sol-gel controlling and post-treatment), as well as self-formation phenomenon of porous hierarchy. A series of detailed examples are given to show methods for the synthesis of hierarchically porous structures with various chemical compositions (dual porosities: micro-micropores, micro-mesopores, micro-macropores, meso-mesopores, meso-macropores, multiple porosities: micro-meso-macropores and meso-meso-macropores). We hope that this review will be helpful for those entering the field and also for those in the field who want quick access to helpful reference information about the synthesis of new hierarchically porous materials and methods to control their structure and morphology.

Abstract: Herein is reported the preparation of nanostructured mesoporous supported films, in this case, titanium dioxide nanoparticles on silicon wafer, according to a new approach taking place in two consecutive deposition steps: (i) coating of a homogeneous and continuous layer of a surfactant on the selected support and (ii) building up of a second layer of the fresh metal-oxide gel precursor, followed by thermal treatment to generate porosity. This approach represents an alternative way to soft-template procedures, as for instance, the largely applied evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) method, which typically consists of a single-step deposition of the mixture of gel precursor and surfactant used as a soft template to create porosity. The main advantage of the procedure reported here compared to the EISA method is the possibility of reaching tunable textural characteristics along the growing film (pore size, shape, and distribution of pores) by using gels with nanoparticles preformed at different stages via a simple regulation of the residence time of the precursors deposited on the support containing the surfactant.

Abstract: © 2019 American Chemical Society. Herein, we present the aerosol-assisted sol-gel preparation of hierarchically porous TiO 2 -SiO 2 catalysts having a spherelike shell morphology and a high Ti dispersion. In order to control the porosity at the micro-, meso-, and macrolevels, we use the evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) of a surfactant, possibly combined with polymer beads as hard templates. These catalysts are tested for the epoxidation of cyclohexene with cumene hydroperoxide as the oxidant, and their performance is compared to the reference TS-1 zeolite. The high catalytic performance observed with the catalysts prepared by aerosol stems from their high specific surface area, but also from the short diffusion path length generated by the meso-/macropore architecture which provides entryways for bulky reactants and products. Besides, these materials can incorporate a higher Ti loading than TS-1 zeolite, while ensuring a good control over the Ti speciation. Abstract: International audience; Iridium oxide is the gold‐standard catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media due to its unmatched activity and stability. Here, a new catalyst architecture comprising a nanoneedle network of iridium‐containing oxides assembled into macroporous micrometric particles with ≈75% of porosity is reported. The rationally designed porous hierarchical structure optimizes the accessibility of reactants and products to the surface of the nanoparticles and maximizes catalyst activity. The materials are easily prepared from aqueous solutions by an industrially viable spray‐drying route through an evaporation self‐assembly mechanism. The versatility of the process enables the preparation of mixed oxides with low iridium content, particles with tunable crystallinity, and various iridium surface species with high electrochemical activity. Highly porous Ir0.7Ru0.3O2 outperforms commercial iridium oxide. These materials also represent an ideal platform to assess the reactivity of the iridium and oxygen species involved in the oxygen evolution reaction. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that these highly porous particles are optimal building blocks to be integrated into catalyst layers, without the drawbacks associated with the use of discrete nanoparticles. Fresh‐ and end‐of‐test membrane–electrode assemblies' characterization shows that their particular architecture is preserved upon catalyst layer preparation and after operation in a proton‐exchange membrane electrolysis cell.

Abstract: International audience; Capping ligands play an important role in the chemistry of nanoparticles synthesized with organic surfactants. This is relevant to a number of device applications where heating may cause major modifications of crystalline nanoparticles including amorphization, surface rearrangements or sintering. Ultrathin monodisperse Ln2O2Sx oxysulfide nanoparticles (Ln=lanthanide) obtained in a mixture of oleylamine, oleic acid and 1‐octadecene show promising luminescence and light absorption properties. In view of applications, one open question concerns the thermal behavior and the role of the ligands on the thermal reactivity of the nanoparticles. In this report, we show that the thermal stability of Gd2O2Sx nanocrystals is limited because of their non‐stoichiometric composition and strongly depends on the annealing atmosphere. The sintering temperature of the nanoparticles is lower in air than in inert atmosphere because of a rapid degradation of the ligands. Annealing the nanoparticles in air enables removing the ligands without altering the nanocrystals structure. The decomposition of the Gd2O2Sx nanocrystals in inert atmosphere exhibits a complex multi‐step behavior that was precisely modeled. This work gives a comprehensive description of the stability conditions of lanthanide oxysulfide nanoparticles. It establishes the conditions for their practical use and opens the way to major improvements of the surface activity of Ln2O2S nanoparticles and related nanocrystals.

Abstract: Octahedral molecular sieves (OMS) are built of transition metal-oxygen octahedra that delimit sub-nanoscale cavities. Compared to other microporous solids, OMS exhibit larger versatility in properties, provided by various redox states and magnetic behaviors of transition metals. Hence, OMS offer opportunities in electrochemical energy harnessing devices, including batteries, electrochemical capacitors and electrochromic systems, provided two conditions are met: fast exchange of ions in the micropores and stability upon exchange. Here we unveil a novel OMS hexagonal polymorph of tungsten oxide called h’-WO3, built of (WO6)6 tunnel cavities. h’-WO3 is prepared by a one-step soft chemistry aqueous route leading to the hydrogen bronze h’-H0.07WO3. Gentle heating results in h’-WO3 with framework retention. The material exhibits an unusual combination of 1-dimensional crystal structure and 2-dimensional nanostructure that enhances and fastens proton (de)insertion for stable electrochromic devices. This discovery paves the way to a new family of mixed valence functional materials with tunable behaviors.

Abstract: International audience; Nanoparticles with strong paramagnetic responses are of prime interest for advanced MRI imaging. To replace Gd expensive and toxic complexes, Gd-based nanoparticles have emerged as a viable solution for efficient and harmless MRI contrast agents. Gadolinium oxysulfide nanoparticles could represent suitable candidates for MRI imaging and bimodal imaging thanks to their excellent properties as host matrix and chemical stability, but their magnetic properties at the nanoscale have been hitherto poorly investigated especially in the case of ultrafine nanoparticles (< 10 nm), where surface effects and ligands can significantly affect the magnetic behavior. In the present work, we synthesized and characterized bimetallic (Gd,Ce) 2 O 2 S nanoparticles and demonstrated that they are paramagnetic over a wide 2 temperature range including the body one. The mixture of Gd and Ce magnetic centers enables a fine control of the magnetic properties up to high Ce concentrations (80 %) and over a large range of magnetic moments, while photoemission properties are guaranteed up to 20 % of Ce owing to a regular dispersion of the Ce centers. The present study on bimetallic oxysulfide nanoparticles with high concentrations of two lanthanides shows that (Gd,Ce) 2 O 2 S nanoparticles are viable candidates as tunable nanoscaled agents for bimodal imaging.

Abstract: International audience; Among the inorganic compounds, many oxides and sulfides are known to be semiconductors. At the crossroads of these two families, oxysulfide MxOySz compounds were much less investigated because they are scarce in nature and complex to synthesize. Amongst them, lanthanide oxysulfide Ln2O2S (Ln = lanthanide) are indirect bandgap semiconductors, with wide gaps, except Ce2O2S. (Gd,Ce)2O2S anisotropic nanoparticles with hexagonal structure were obtained over the whole composition range and exhibit colors varying from white to brown with increasing Ce concentration. Bandgap engineering is thus possible, from 4.7 eV for Gd2O2S, to 2.1 eV for Gd0.6Ce1.4O2S, while the structure is preserved with a slight lattice expansion. Surprisingly, due to the limited thickness of the lamellar nanoparticles, the bandgap of the nanoparticles is direct as validated by density functional theory on slabs. The fine control of the bandgap over a wide range, solely triggered by the cation ratio, is rarely described in the literature and highly promising for further development of this class of compounds. We propose a multi-regime mechanism to rationalize the bandgap engineering over the whole composition range. This should inspire the design of other bimetallic nanoscaled compounds, in particular in the field of visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract: International audience; N‐Heterocyclic carbene(NHC)‐stabilized copper nanoparticles are synthesized using a NHC‐borane and mesitylcopper(I) in thermal conditions (refluxing toluene for 2.5 h). Nanoparticles (NPs) with a size distribution of 11.6 ± 1.8 nm were obtained. The interaction between Cu NPs and NHC ligands was probed by XPS, showing the covalent binding of the NHC to the surface of the nanoparticles. Mechanistic studies suggest that the NHC‐borane plays two roles: contributing to the reduction of [CuMes]2 to release Cu0 species and providing NHC ligands to stabilize the copper nanoparticles

Abstract: International audience; Magnéli phases TinO2n-1 (3 < n ≤ 10) are mixed Ti 4+ /Ti 3+ oxides with high electrical conductivity. When used for water remediation or electrochemical energy storage and conversion, they are nanostructured and exposed to various environments. Therefore, understanding their surface reactivity is of prime importance. Such studies have been hindered by carbon contamination from syntheses. Herein we address this synthetic and characterization challenge through a new approach towards 50 nm carbon-free Ti4O7 and Ti6O11 nanoparticles. To do so, we take advantage of the different reactivities of rutile and anatase TiO2 nanoparticles versus H2, to use the former as precursors of TinO2n-1 and the latter as diluting agents. This approach is combined to silica templating in order to restrain particles growth. The surface reactivity of the Magnéli nanoparticles under different atmospheres was then evaluated quantitatively with synchrotron radiation-based X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, highlighting oxidized surfaces with lower conductivity than the core. This finding sheds a new light on the charge transfer occuring in these materials.

Abstract: International audience; With increasing environmental and ecological concerns due to the use of petroleum-based chemicals and products, the synthesis of fine chemicals and functional materials from natural resources is of great public value. Nanocellulose may prove to be one of the most promising green materials of modern times due to its intrinsic properties, renewability, and abundance. In this review, we present nanocellulose-based materials from sourcing, synthesis, and surface modification of nanocellulose, to materials formation and applications. Nanocellulose can be sourced from biomass, plants, or bacteria, relying on fairly simple, scalable, and efficient isolation techniques. Mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic treatments, or a combination of these, can be used to extract nanocellulose from natural sources. The properties of nanocellulose are dependent on the source, the isolation technique, and potential subsequent surface transformations. Nanocellulose surface modification techniques are typically used to introduce either charged or hydrophobic moieties, and include amidation, esterification, etherification, silylation, polymerization, urethanization, sulfonation, and phosphorylation. Nanocellulose has excellent strength, high Young’s modulus, biocompatibility, and tunable self-assembly, thixotropic, and photonic properties, which are essential for the applications of this material. Nanocellulose participates in the fabrication of a large range of nanomaterials and nanocomposites, including those based on polymers, metals, metal oxides, and carbon. In particular, nanocellulose complements organic-based materials, where it imparts its mechanical properties to the composite. Nanocellulose is a promising material whenever material strength, flexibility, and/or specific nanostructuration are required. Applications include functional paper, optoelectronics, and antibacterial coatings, packaging, mechanically reinforced polymer composites, tissue scaffolds, drug delivery, biosensors, energy storage, catalysis, environmental remediation, and electrochemically controlled separation. Phosphorylated nanocellulose is a particularly interesting material, spanning a surprising set of applications in various dimensions including bone scaffolds, adsorbents, and flame retardants and as a support for the heterogenization of homogeneous catalysts.

Abstract: International audience; In this manuscript, we present a new strategy for the direct synthesis of functional nano-composite hybrid therapeutic vectors. The smart coupling of soft-chemistry and “ouzo effect” based emulsification processing allows us to create in a very simple way a Pickering stabilized emulsion from various prodrug modelling molecules used as a core, and subsequently embedded into a mesostructured silica shell. The resulting prodrug/Fe2O3/silica architecture offers a very good functionality/complexity ratio, realistic from a pharmaceutical development point of view at the industrial scale. While usual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent properties of maghemite nanoparticles are maintained, we proved for the first time that their smart localization at the organic/silica interface allows us to isolate them from phosphate anions of the surrounding environment, and thus to use their surface as a heterogeneous catalyst for controlled hydrolysis-mediated model drug delivery. This original hydrolysis-mediated release mechanism was investigated by grafting a model drug molecule via various covalent bonds. The release time can be tuned by this approach in between one hour and three days. In addition, magnetic radio frequency stimulation commonly used for hyperthermia treatment was able to accelerate the catalytic hydrolysis and release of the model drug by one order of magnitude, proving that drug release can be triggered on demand.

Abstract: Extracellular matrices (ECM) rich in type I collagen exhibit characteristic anisotropic ultrastructures. Nevertheless, working in vitro with this biomacromolecule remains challenging. When processed, denaturation of the collagen molecule is easily induced in vitro avoiding proper fibril self-assembly and further hierarchical order. Here, an innovative approach enables the production of highly concentrated injectable collagen microparticles, based on collagen molecules self-assembly, thanks to the use of spray-drying process. The versatility of the process is shown by performing encapsulation of secretion products of gingival mesenchymal stem cells (gMSCs), which are chosen as a bioactive therapeutic product for their potential efficiency in stimulating the regeneration of a damaged ECM. The injection of collagen microparticles in a cell culture medium results in a locally organized fibrillar matrix. The efficiency of this approach for making easily handleable collagen microparticles for encapsulation and injection opens perspectives in active tissue regeneration and 3D bioprinted scaffolds.

Abstract: International audience; In this work we report a synthetic pathway to two-dimensional nanostructures of high oxidation state lamellar cobalt oxides with thicknesses of only few atom layers, through the combined use of precipitation in basic water at room temperature and gentle solid state topotactic transformation at 120 °C. The 2D nanomaterials are characterized by X-ray diffraction, nitrogen porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and especially scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled to energy dispersive X-ray analysis and electron energy loss spectroscopy to assess the composition of the nanosheets and oxidation state of the transition metal species. We show that the nanosheets preserve high oxidation states Co3+ and Co4+ of high interest for electrocatalysis of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). By combining high Co oxidation state, surface-to-volume ratio and optimized nickel substitution, the 2D nanomaterials produced in a simple way exhibit high OER electrocatalytic activity and stability in alkaline aqueous electrolyte comparable to standard materials obtained in harsh thermal conditions.

Abstract: International audience; Functionalized copper nanoparticles are widely used as catalysts; however, identification of the catalytically active species remains a challenge. In this study we investigate hydride-assisted reduction reactions with special focus on the structural evolution of copper nanoparticles in the presence of phosphine and nitrogen-based ligands. These compounds are commonly used as stabilizing agents, therefore are important in the context of other catalytic reactions as well. In particular, we investigate the case of tri-n-butylphosphine. Our findings show that ultrasmall nano-objects are formed as key intermediates to produce catalytically active species in the hydrosilylation of benzaldehyde into the corresponding silyl alcohol. Moreover, we found that the strength of the hydride donor is essential for the formation of the active catalysts. Therefore, this work unveils the previously overlooked high sensitivity of copper nanoparticles toward coordinating ligands in the context of catalysis.

Abstract: Main group element coordination polymers (MGE-CPs) are important compounds for the development of multifunctional materials. However, there has been a shortage of studies regarding their structural, optical, catalytic, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. This work presents an exhaustive study of a set of crystalline MGE-CPs obtained from bismuth and indium metals and iminodiacetate, 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate, and 2,2′-bipyridine as building blocks. An in-depth topological analysis of the networks was carried out. Additionally, nanoindentation studies were performed on two representative low-dimensional compounds in order to find the relationships between their structural features and their intrinsic mechanical properties (hardness and elasticity). The solid-state photoluminescence (SSPL) properties were also studied in terms of excitation, emission, lifetimes values, and CIE chromaticites. Moreover, the heterogeneous catalytic activities of the compounds were evaluated with the cyanosilylation reaction using a set of carbonylic substrates under solvent-free conditions. Finally, the inhibitory effect of the Bi-CPs on the growth of microorganisms such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which are associated with relevant infectious diseases, is reported. Abstract: International audience; Gold quantum dots exhibit distinctive optical and magnetic behaviors compared with larger gold nanoparticles. However, their unfavorable interaction with living systems and lack of stability in aqueous solvents has so far prevented their adoption in biology and medicine. Here, a simple synthetic pathway integrates gold quantum dots within a mesoporous silica shell, alongside larger gold nanoparticles within the shell's central cavity. This ``quantum rattle'' structure is stable in aqueous solutions, does not elicit cell toxicity, preserves the attractive near-infrared photonics and paramagnetism of gold quantum dots, and enhances the drug-carrier performance of the silica shell. In vivo, the quantum rattles reduced tumor burden in a single course of photothermal therapy while coupling three complementary imaging modalities: near-infrared fluorescence, photoacoustic, and magnetic resonance imaging. The incorporation of gold within the quantum rattles significantly enhanced the drug-carrier performance of the silica shell. This innovative material design based on the mutually beneficial interaction of gold and silica introduces the use of gold quantum dots for imaging and therapeutic applications.

Abstract: International audience; During the past decades, the potential derived from the hybridization of inorganic materials, has been widely studied and presented. The capability of tuning materials’ performances, not only in terms of tailoring their physico-chemical properties to answer prerequisites of a given application, but also regarding the elaboration of novel concepts, opened a door to a radical new world in materials science. However, as a consequence of their diverse chemistry, structure, envisaged applications and historical background, each subgroup of inorganic lamellar compounds were usually discussed separately. This review intends to reflect upon the different categories of lamellar compounds and their hybridization strategies, regardless of their chemical and historical differences. The hybridization strategies of lamellar compounds are divided and presented under two main categories. Firstly, the intercalation/exfoliation approach, where the hybridization of lamellar compounds is operated in pre-formed inorganic layered materials. Secondly, the in situ synthesis methods, where the hybrid character of the layered compound is imparted simultaneously along with the layered inorganic compounds synthesis routes. Finally, in order to tackle the important question of “the place and role of hybrid lamellar compounds in consumer end-products, an integration challenge”, the proven concepts and potential applications defined for these organic-inorganic compounds are discussed.

Abstract: International audience; Periodic DFT-D calculations are used to decipher the role of intermolecular forces on the stability of mixed linear thiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) and compared with experiment. The interaction energy is rationalized by quantifying its different contributions. The inter-chain interaction energy is shown to be in direct relation with the surface reconstruction and the formation of adatoms. The stability of the mixed SAM systems is predicted by calculations and validated with experiments. In order to describe predictively the segregation of binary thiol mixtures adsorption on Au surfaces a segregation descriptor is defined. This procedure is a promising step forward in the prediction of segregated SAMs leading to future functional nanomaterials, including Janus or patchy nanoparticles for optics, formulation and self-assembled patterns.

Abstract: International audience; In the past decade, the surprising magnetic behavior of gold nanoparticles has been reported. This unexpected property is mainly attributed both to size and surface effects. Mesoporous thin films are ideal matrices for metallic nanoparticles inclusion, because of their highly accessible and tailorable pore systems that lead to completely tunable chemical environments. Exploiting these features, we synthesized Au nanoparticles within mesoporous titania thin films (film thickness of ∼150 nm and pore diameter of ∼5 nm), and we studied their magnetic properties under confinement. Here, we present the results of the magnetization as a function of temperature and magnetic field for this system, which are consistent with the previously reported for free (unconfined) thiol-capped gold nanoparticles. The successful inclusion of stable magnetic Au nanoparticles within transparent mesoporous thin films opens the gates for the application of these nanocomposites in two-dimensional (2D) microdevices technology and magneto-optical devices.

Abstract: International audience; Nanophase segregation of a bi-component thiol self-assembled monolayer is predicted using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and experimentally confirmed. The simulations suggest the formation of domains rich in acid-terminated chains, on one hand, and of domains rich in amide-functionalized ethylene glycol oligomers, on the other hand. In particular, within the amide-ethylene glycol oligomers region, a key role is played by the formation of inter-chain hydrogen bonds. The predicted phase segregation is experimentally confirmed by the synthesis of 35 and 15 nm gold nanoparticles functionalized with several binary mixtures of ligands. An extensive study by transmission electron microscopy and electron tomography, using silica selective heterogeneous nucleation on acid-rich domains to provide electron contrast, supports simulations and highlights patchy nanoparticles with a trend towards Janus nano-objects depending on the nature of the ligands and the particle size. These results validate our computational platform as an effective tool to predict nanophase separation in organic mixtures on a surface and drive further exploration of advanced nanoparticle functionalization.

Abstract: International audience; Lanthanide oxysulfide nanoparticles have recently attracted interest in view of their potential applications, such as lighting devices and MRI contrast agents, which requires a good stability in air and a controlled surface. In order to address these issues, in this work, air-sensitive Ce2O2S nanoparticles of hexagonal shape were successfully prepared and characterized under inert conditions. Bimetallic Gd2(1–y)Ce2yO2S nanoparticles of similar shape and size were also synthesized for the whole composition range (y from 0 to 1). X-ray diffraction structural data are found to follow Vegard’s law up to y = 0.4, which is attributed to the loss of stability in air of Ce-rich nanocrystals beyond this threshold. This picture is supported by X-ray absorption spectra taken at the S K-edge and Ce L3-edge that show the partial oxidation of sulfide species and of CeIII to CeIV in the presence of air or water. A complementary near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study shows that at least two types of oxidized sulfur species form on the nanoparticle surface. Even in Gd2O2S nanoparticles that are generally considered to be air-stable, we found that sulfide ions are partially oxidized to sulfate in air. These results unveil the physicochemical mechanisms responsible for the surface reactivity of lanthanide oxysulfides nanoparticles in air.

Abstract: International audience; Li-ion batteries need to be charged by being plugged into the grid, limiting their autonomy. Charging a battery consists of applying an external load to reverse the spontaneous electrochemical reactions during discharge. A strategy to improve their autonomy is to design nanostructured electrodes whose composition and architecture allow for these reactions to be driven by light. Classical electrochemical experiments (in the dark and under light) demonstrate that light promotes the de-insertion reaction of 3D LixTiO2 mesoporous thin films due to the participation of photogenerated holes (h+). These holes allow the oxidation of Ti3+ into Ti4+, simultaneously giving rise to Li-ion extraction. Galvanostatic experiments performed on Li-rich TiO2 mesoporous films show that competition between ion insertion and de-insertion occurs, leading to electrodes with potentially infinite capacity. This work constitutes a proof of concept that low potential Li-ion batteries (TiO2//Li0) can solely be recharged by exposure to light.

Abstract: International audience; British 19th century painters such as J.M.W. Turner, commonly modified the properties of their paint by using gels called 'gumtions'. These gels allowed them to easily tune the paint handling and drying properties. The fascinating properties of these 'gumtions' were obtained by adding lead acetate to a ternary system based on mastic resin, linseed oil and turpentine. Herein, we report and investigate in depth the rheological properties of these gels as well as their structure at a molecular and supra-molecular scale.

Abstract: International audience; Despite the promise of utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as highly tunable photocatalytic materials , systematic studies that interrogate the relationship between their catalytic performances and the amount of function-alized linkers are lacking. Aminated linkers are known to enhance the absorption of light and afford photocatalysis with MOFs under visible-light irradiation. However, the manner in which the photocatalytic performances are impacted by the amount of such linkers is poorly understood. Here, we assess the photocatalytic activity of MIL-125, a TiO 2 /1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) MOF for the oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde when increasing amounts of bdc-NH 2 linkers (0%, 20%, 46%, 70% and 100%) are incorporated in the framework. Analytical TEM allowed assessing the homogeneous localization of bdc-NH 2 in these mixed-linker MOFs. Steady state reaction rates reveal two regimes of catalytic performances: a first linear regime up to ~50% bdc-NH 2 into the hybrid framework whereby increased amounts of bdc-NH 2 yielded increased photocatalytic rates, followed by a plateau up to 100% bdc-NH 2. This unexpected " saturation " of the catalytic activity above ~50% bdc-NH 2 content in the framework whatever the wavelength filters used, demonstrates that amination of all linkers of the MOF is not required to obtain the maximum photocatalytic activity. This is rationalized on the basis of mixed-valence Ti 3+ /Ti 4+ intermediate catalytic centers revealed by Electron Spin Resonance measurements and recent knowledge of lifetime excited states in MIL-125-type of solids.

Abstract: International audience; Quartz has been widely used as a bulk material in optics, the microelectronic industry, and sensors. The nanostructuring and direct integration of oriented quartz crystals onto a semiconductor platform has proven to be challenging. However, here, a new approach is presented to integrate epitaxial quartz films with macroperforations within the range of 500 nm and 1 mu m using chemical solution deposition. This method constitutes an appealing approach to develop piezoelectric mass sensors with enhanced resonance frequencies due to the thickness reduction. Perforated quartz films on (100)-silicon are prepared from amorphous silica films deposited via dip-coating and doped with metal cations that catalyze quartz crystallization. The metal cations are also active in the formation of the macroperforations, which arise due to a phase separation mechanism. Cationic surfactant-anion-metal cation assemblies stabilize droplets of water, creating an indentation in the hydrophilic silica matrix which remains after solvent evaporation. Many cations induce phase separation, including Li+, Na+, Sr2+, Mn2+, Fe2+/Fe3+, Ca2+, Ce3+ and La3+ but only the Sr2+ and Ca2+ cations in this series induce the epitaxial growth of alpha-quartz films under the conditions studied. The combination of sol-gel chemistry and epitaxial growth opens new opportunities for the integration of patterned quartz on silicon.

Abstract: International audience; Processing strategies for the synthesis of hybrid materials stand as relevant ways to modulate the particle size and morphology. We present herein the use of a continuous high temperature-high pressure (HT-HP) process for the synthesis of a new cerium based metal-organic framework (MOF). The HT-HP harsh thermodynamic synthesis conditions lead to MOF nanostructures exhibiting the same phase as for microparticles obtained under conventional batch solvothermal conditions but in exceptional much shorter residence times, opening avenues towards production scaling-up. The HT-HP process also tailors down the size of the particles, which still presents a major issue for most MOF applications.

Abstract: International audience; This review describes the main successful strategies that are used to grow mesostructured nanocrystalline metal oxide and SiO2 films via deposition of sol-gel derived solutions. In addition to the typical physicochemical forces to be considered during crystallization, mesoporous thin films are also affected by the substrate-film relationship and the mesostructure. The substrate can influence the crystallization temperature and the obtained crystallographic orientation due to the interfacial energies and the lattice mismatch. The mesostructure can influence the crystallite orientation, and affects nucleation and growth behavior due to the wall thickness and pore curvature. Three main methods are presented and discussed: templated mesoporosity followed by thermally induced crystallization, mesostructuration of already crystallized metal oxide nanobuilding units and substrate-directed crystallization with an emphasis on very recent results concerning epitaxially grown piezoelectric structured a-quartz films via crystallization of amorphous structured SiO2 thin films.

Abstract: International audience; One-pot aerosol-assisted synthesis of mesostructured (Co)Mo/SiO2 catalysts with high hydrogenation activity is reported. The evaporation*induced self-assembly mechanism of the formation of such catalysts enables optimized interactions between each component, resulting in the tuning of localization of the active species. The high activity is probably associated with the original morphology of the active phase as well as the creation of relevant defects in its structure. Since spray-dried mesoporous CoMo/SiO2 catalysts outperform the hydrogenation activity of classical impregnated catalysts, aerosol route appears to be a promising way for the industrial-scale preparation of new highly efficient hydrocarbons catalysts.
