Abstract

International audience; Overhead work is classified as one of the major risk factors for the onset of shoulder work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) and muscle fatigue. Upper-limb exoskeletons can be used to assist workers during the execution of industrial overhead tasks to prevent such disorders. Twelve novice participants have been equipped with inertial and force/torque sensors to simultaneously estimate the whole-body kinematics and the joint torques (i.e., internal articular stress) by means of a probabilistic estimator while performing an overhead taskwith a pointing tool. An evaluation has been performed to analyze the effect at the whole-body level by considering the conditions of wearing and not-wearing PAEXO, a passive exoskeleton for upper-limb support during overhead work. Results point out that PAEXO provides a reduction of the whole-body joint effort across the experimental task blocks (from 66% to 86%). Moreover, the analysis along with 5 different body areas shows that i) the exoskeleton provides support at the human shoulders by reducing the joint effort at the targeted limbs and ii) that part of theinternal wrenches is intuitively transferred from the upper body to the thighs and legs, which is shown with an increment of the torques at the legs joints. The promising outcomes show that the probabilistic estimation algorithm can be used as a validation metric to quantitatively assess PAEXO performances, paving thus the way for the next challenging milestone, such as the optimization of the human joint torques via adaptive exoskeleton control.

Abstract

This archive contains the raw evaluation results and scripts associated with the experiments described in the article "Making Higher-Order Superposition Work" by Vukmirović, Bentkamp, Blanchette, Cruanes, Nummelin and Tourret available at: https://matryoshka-project.github.io/pubs/mhosw_article.pdf The problems we used for the evaluation are in problems/ subdirectory, divided in categories sh and tptp as in the article. In the results/ directory there are two subdirectories, sh and tptp, one for each benchmark category. Both subdirectories contain files named fD.csv where D is a number from 1 to 10. The files contain experiment results for the figure labelled with the number D, and the benchmark category corresponding to the parent directory. In the result files, the columns give the results of the experiment run for a given prover configuration (e.g., CPU time, reported status, memory usage, etc.). Each row corresponds to one problem file, whose name is given in the "prob_name" column. The "i_solver" column corresponds to a prover, whereas the "i_configuration" column corresponds to a configuration, where i is a natural number identifying a combination of prover and configuration. Files ending with "summary.csv" contain concise summaries of evaluation runs for a corresponding results file. Columns of these files are of the form "{solver}_{configuration}", and rows contain different statistics described in the "summary" column. The names of the solvers and configurations used in result files are self-explanatory (for DCS, DCI and IC configurations presence of av in the name of the configuration denotes that Avatar is enabled). In some cases, for uniformity, configurations are used in multiple figures. We used the following versions of higher-order provers: CVC4 1.9 ([git cascJ10 db26022c]), Leo-III 1.5.6, Satallax 3.5, Vampire 4.5.1 (commit 68d3e7314), E 2.7 (603992156b943171002cacca72aa3f2d0a211ee3). The "zipperposition/" directory contains the scripts that can be used to run the provided Zipperposition binary (compiled for Linux) on a given problem using a given configuration. To run Zipperposition on a single problem using some configuration, use the scripts with the name "run_*", where * stands for the configuration used in the evaluation. The configuration names match those used in the result files. Except for "run_coop" and "run_uncoop", scripts accept three arguments: 1) path to the problem 2) CPU timeout 3) path to the temporary directory for files used to communicate with Ehoh. "run_coop" and "run_uncoop" expect only the first two arguments For example, to run problem with the path ~/problem.p using configuration which enables PEHO priority function for up to 15 seconds execute ./run_prio_peho ~/problem.p 15 /tmp Working installation of Python 3 and bash is required. Source code for Zipperposition can be obtained from the wip-merge-hlbe branch of Zipperposition git repository: git@github.com:sneeuwballen/zipperposition.git. The binary stored under scripts/ directory corresponds to compiled sources tagged with commit hash 8d205ecf8869c76dcfdf0c1faa98b002226780a1. Compilation instructions are as in README.md file contained in the git repository. As noted in footnote 2, three tables have been evaluated using a faulty version of Ehoh prover. Reevaluation is being performed, and it is expected that the evaluation results will stay mostly the same, up to the noise in the evaluation environment. "eprover-ho" binary provided in this archive is the corrected version of the one used to evaluate tables 7, 8 and 9.

Abstract

International audience; In the context of building acoustics and the acoustic diagnosis of an existing room, this paper introduces and investigates a new approach to estimate mean absorption coefficients solely from a room impulse response (RIR). This inverse problem is tackled via virtually-supervised learning, namely, the RIR-to-absorption mapping is implicitly learned by regression on a simulated dataset using artificial neural networks. We focus on simple models based on well-understood architectures. The critical choices of geometric, acoustic and simulation pa- rameters used to train the models are extensively discussed and studied, while keeping in mind conditions that are representative of the field of building acoustics. Estimation errors from the learned neural models are compared to those obtained with classical formulas thatrequire knowledge of the room's geometry and reverberation times. Extensive comparisons made on a variety of simulated test sets highlight different conditions under which the learned models can overcome the well-known limitations of the diffuse sound field hypothesis under-lying these formulas. Results obtained on real RIRs measured in an acoustically configurable room show that at 1 kHz and above, the proposed approach performs comparably to classical models when reverberation times can be reliably estimated, and continues to work even when they cannot.

Abstract

The performance of speaker recognition system is highly dependent on the amount of speech used in enrollment and test. This work presents a detailed experimental review and analysis of the GMM-SVM based speaker recognition system in presence of duration variability. This article also reports a comparison of the performance of GMM-SVM classifier with its precursor technique Gaussian mixture model-universal background model (GMM-UBM) classifier in presence of duration variability. The goal of this research work is not to propose a new algorithm for improving speaker recognition performance in presence of duration variability. However, the main focus of this work is on utterance partitioning (UP), a commonly used strategy to compensate the duration variability issue. We have analysed in detailed the impact of training utterance partitioning in speaker recognition performance under GMM-SVM framework. We further investigate the reason why the utterance partitioning is important for boosting speaker recognition performance. We have also shown in which case the utterance partitioning could be useful and where not. Our study has revealed that utterance partitioning does not reduce the data imbalance problem of the GMM-SVM classifier as claimed in earlier study. Apart from these, we also discuss issues related to the impact of parameters such as number of Gaussians, supervector length, amount of splitting required for obtaining better performance in short and long duration test conditions from speech duration perspective. Abstract

We present a generic design of abstract machines for nondeterministic programming languages, such as process calculi or concurrent lambda calculi, that provides a simple way to implement them. Such a machine traverses a term in the search for a redex, making non-deterministic choices when several paths are possible and backtracking when it reaches a dead end, i.e., an irreducible subterm. The search is guaranteed to terminate thanks to term annotations the machine introduces along the way. We show how to automatically derive a non-deterministic abstract machine from a zipper semantics-a form of structural operational semantics in which the decomposition process of a term into a context and a redex is made explicit. The derivation method ensures the soundness and completeness of the machines w.r.t. the zipper semantics., Nous proposons une présentation uniforme des machines abstraites pour les langages non déterministes, tels que les calculs de processus ou les lambda-calculs concurrents, qui permet de les implémenter facilement. Une telle machine traverse le terme à la recherche d’un redex, en faisant des choix arbitraires lorsque plusieurs chemins sont possibles, et en retournant en arrière lorsqu’elle atteint un cul-de-sac, c’est-à-dire un terme irreductible. Nous garantissons la terminaison de la recherche grâce aux annotations que la machine ajoute encours de route. Nous montrons comment dériver automatiquement une machine non déterministe depuis une sémantique zipper—une forme de sémantique opérationnelle structurelle dans laquelle la décomposition d’un terme en un contexte et un redex apparaît explicitement. La méthode dedérivation garantit la correction et la complétude de la machine par rapport à la sémantique zipper.

Abstract

Submitted to INTERSPEECH 2021; International audience; In recent years, voice-controlled personal assistants have revolutionized the interaction with smart devices and mobile applications. These dialogue tools are then used by system providers to improve and retrain the language models (LMs). Each spoken message reveals personal information, hence, it is necessary to remove the private data from the input utterances. However, this may harm the LM training because privacy-transformed data is unlikely to match the test distribution. This paper aims to fill the gap by focusing on the adaptation of LM initially trained on privacy-transformed utterances. Our data sanitization process relies on named-entity recognition. We propose an LM adaptation strategy over the private data with minimum losses. Class-based modeling is an effective approach to overcome data sparsity in the context of n-gram model training. On the other hand, neural LMs can handle longer contexts which can yield better predictions. Our methodology combines the predictive power of class-based models and the generalization capability of neural models together. With privacy transformation, we have a relative 11% word error rate (WER) increase compared to an LM trained on the clean data. Despite the privacy-preserving, we can still achieve comparable accuracy. Empirical evaluations attain a relative WER improvement of 8% over the initial model.

Abstract

International audience; We study the scenario where individuals (speakers) contribute to the publication of an anonymized speech corpus. Data users then leverage this public corpus to perform downstream tasks (such as training automatic speech recognition systems), while attackers may try to de-anonymize itbased on auxiliary knowledge they collect. Motivated by this scenario, speaker anonymization aims to conceal the speaker identity while preserving the quality and usefulness of speech data. In this paper, we study x-vector based speaker anonymization, the leading approach in the recent Voice Privacy Challenge, which converts an input utterance into that of a random pseudo-speaker. We show that the strength of the anonymization varies significantly depending on how the pseudo-speaker is selected. In particular, we investigate four design choices: the distance measure between speakers, the region of x-vector space where the pseudo-speaker is mapped, the gender selection and whether to use speaker or utterance level assignment. We assess the quality of anonymization from the perspective of the three actors involved in our threat model, namely the speaker, the user and the attacker. To measure privacy and utility, we use respectively the linkability score achieved by the attackers and the decoding word error rate incurred by an ASR model trained with the anonymized data. Experiments on LibriSpeech dataset confirm that the optimal combination ofdesign choices yield state-of-the-art performance in terms of privacy protection as well as utility. Experiments on Mozilla Common Voice dataset show that the best design choices with 50 speakers guarantee the same anonymization level against re-identification attack as raw speech with 20,000 speakers.

Abstract

International audience; With the ever growing internet of things market, Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) become more and more attractive. Among the various LPWAN technologies, LoRa (and LoRaWAN) has drawn a lot of research attention with its great adaptation capability. In fact, its spectrum modulation spreading factor, transmission power, data rate, channel bandwidth,and coding rate are so many configurable parameters allowing to cope with a large number of use cases. In addition, through its ADR (Adaptive Data Rate) function, LoRa offers an interesting mechanism to self-adapt its configuration to its operational conditions. Several works have been carried out for extending ADR to further improve its performance for different use cases. LoRa has even been recently investigated on its capacity to support the mobility, although it is not originally designed for.In this paper, we first review the most significant ADR enhancements proposed in the literature, then describe our earlier E-ADR proposal [1] aiming at dealing with the node mobility use case. This paper also provides experimental performance evaluations of the reviewed ADR enhancements in a mobile node scenario, highlighting the unique feature of E-ADR.

Abstract

This paper presents a formal development approach for designing interactive applications using a correct-by-construction approach. In this work, we propose a refinement strategy using model-view-controller (MVC) to structure and design Event-B formal models of the interactive application. The proposed MVC-based refinement strategy facilitates the development of an abstract model and a series of refined models by introducing the possible modes, controller’s behaviour and visual components of the interactive application while preserving the required interaction-related safety properties. To demonstrate the effectiveness, scalability, reliability and feasibility of our approach, we use a small example (from automotive domain) and real-life industrial case studies (from aviation). The entire development is realized in Event-B and the associated Rodin tool is used to analyse and verify the correctness of the formalized model. Finally, the developed Event-B models are used to generate source code using EB2ALL tool for going from the specification to the implementation of the interactive application.

Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with hybrid dynamical system identification, and focuses more particularly on the estimation of the number of modes. An evaluation of a recent method based on model selection techniques from statistical learning is proposed, together with its comparison with more standard approaches based on algebraic arguments. Overall, three methods are benchmarked in various settings, including different noise conditions and data set sizes. The results provide insights into the respective advantages and weaknesses of the methods, thus yielding a set of guidelines on the choice of the most suitable method in a given situation for the practitioner.

This manuscript is published in the proceedings of the 7th IFAC Conference on Analysis and Design of Hybrid Systems (ADHS 2021).; International audience; We aim at the synthesis of an approximate minimax control for a system dynamic given in the form x.(t) = f(x(t),u(t),d(t)) where x represents the state, u the control (or input) and d a disturbance (or perturbation).The disturbance d(t) is prescribed to a compact domain D on which it can take any value (bounded uncertainty).Our method makes use of symbolic computation to enclose the solutions corresponding to all possible disturbance d. in D, together with a simple algorithm of random sampling to select the minimum control u*.We illustrate the interest of this approximate minimax control on an example of a biochemical reactor.

International audience; The paper brings to the fore some advantages to first develop a new treebank in Surface-Syntactic Universal Dependencies (SUD) annotation scheme, even if the goal is to obtain a UD treebank. Theoretical benefits of SUD are presented, as well as UD-compatible SUD innovations. The twoway UD , SUD conversion is explained, as well as the possibility to customize the conversion for a given language. The paper concludes by a practical guide for the development of a SUD treebank.

Abstract

submitted to LMCS; We formalise the undecidability of solvability of Diophantine equations, i.e. polynomial equations over natural numbers, in Coq's constructive type theory. To do so, we give the first full mechanisation of the Davis-Putnam-Robinson-Matiyasevich theorem, stating that every recursively enumerable problem -- in our case by a Minsky machine -- is Diophantine. We obtain an elegant and comprehensible proof by using a synthetic approach to computability and by introducing Conway's FRACTRAN language as intermediate layer. Additionally, we prove the reverse direction and show that every Diophantine relation is recognisable by $\mu$-recursive functions and give a certified compiler from $\mu$-recursive functions to Minsky machines.

International audience; Efficiently discovering causal relations from data and representing them in a way that facilitates their use is an important problem in science that has received much attention. In this paper, we propose an adaptation of the Formal Concept Analysis formalism to the problem of discovering and representing causal relations. We show that Formal Concept Analysis structures and algorithms are well-suited to this problem.

Abstract

We consider uniform random cographs (either labeled or unlabeled) of large size. Our first main result is the convergence towards a Brownian limiting object in the space of graphons. We then show that the degree of a uniform random vertex in a uniform cograph is of order $n$, and converges after normalization to the Lebesgue measure on $[0,1]$. We finally analyze the vertex connectivity (i.e. the minimal number of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph) of random connected cographs, and show that this statistics converges in distribution without renormalization. Unlike for the graphon limit and for the degree of a random vertex, the limiting distribution is different in the labeled and unlabeled settings. Our proofs rely on the classical encoding of cographs via cotrees. Abstract

Nature offers a marvel of astonishing and rich deformation behaviors. Yet, most of the objects we fabricate are comparatively rather inexpressive, either rigid or exhibiting simple homogeneous deformations when interacted with. We explore the synthesis and fabrication of novel microstructures that mimic the effects of having oriented rigid fibers in an otherwise flexible material: the result is extremely rigid along a transverse direction while being comparatively very flexible in the locally orthogonal plane. By allowing free gradation of the rigidity direction orientation within the object, the microstructures can be designed such that, under deformation, distances along fibers in the volume are preserved while others freely change. Through a simple painting tool, this allows a designer to influence the way the volume reshapes when deformed, and results in a wide range of novel possibilities. Many gradations are possible: local free orientation of the fibers; local control of the overall material rigidity (structure density); local canceling of the effect of the fibers, obtaining a more isotropic material. Our algorithm to synthesize the structures builds upon procedural texturing. It produces a cellular geometry that can be fabricated reliably despite 3D printing walls at a minimal thickness, allowing prints to be very flexible. The synthesis algorithm is efficient and scales to large volumes.

We examine how the measure and the number of vertices of the convex hull of a random sample of $n$ points from an arbitrary probability measure in $\mathbf{R}^d$ relates to the wet part of that measure. This extends classical results for the uniform distribution from a convex set [B\'ar\'any and Larman 1988]. The lower bound of B\'ar\'any and Larman continues to hold in the general setting, but the upper bound must be relaxed by a factor of $\log n$. Abstract

International audience; Users in online social networks are vulnerable to attribute inference attacks due to some published data. Thus, the picture owner's gender has a strong influence on individuals' emotional reactions to the photo. In this work, we present a graph-embedding approach for gender inference attacks based on pictures meta-data such as (i) alt-texts generated by Facebook to describe the content of images, and (ii) Emojis/Emoticons posted by friends, friends of friends or regular users as a reaction to the picture. Specifically, we apply a semi-supervised technique, node2vec, for learning a mapping of pictures meta-data to a low-dimensional vector space. Next, we study in this vector space the gender closeness of users who published similar photos and/or received similar reactions. We leverage this image sharing and reaction mode of Facebook users to derive an efficient and accurate technique for user gender inference. Experimental results show that privacy attack often succeeds even when other information than pictures published by their owners is either hidden or unavailable.

Abstract

We consider a problem from biological network analysis of determining regions in a parameter space over which there are multiple steady states for positive real values of variables and parameters. We describe multiple approaches to address the problem using tools from Symbolic Computation. We describe how progress was made to achieve semi-algebraic descriptions of the multistationarity regions of parameter space, and compare symbolic results to numerical methods. The biological networks studied are models of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) network which has already consumed considerable effort using special insights into its structure of corresponding models. Our main example is a model with 11 equations in 11 variables and 19 parameters, 3 of which are of interest for symbolic treatment. The model also imposes positivity conditions on all variables and parameters. We apply combinations of symbolic computation methods designed for mixed equality/inequality systems, specifically virtual substitution, lazy real triangularization and cylindrical algebraic decomposition, as well as a simplification technique adapted from Gaussian elimination and graph theory. We are able to determine multistationarity of our main example over a 2-dimensional parameter space. We also study a second MAPK model and a symbolic grid sampling technique which can locate such regions in 3-dimensional parameter space., Comment: 60 pages - author preprint. Abstract

Background: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a heterogeneous syndrome for which clear evidence of effective therapies is lacking. Understanding which factors determine this heterogeneity may be helped by better phenotyping. An unsupervised statistical approach applied to a large set of biomarkers may identify distinct HFpEF phenotypes. Methods: Relevant proteomic biomarkers were analyzed in 392 HFpEF patients included in Metabolic Road to Diastolic HF (MEDIA-DHF). We performed an unsupervised cluster analysis to define distinct phenotypes. Cluster characteristics were explored with logistic regression. The association between clusters and 1-year cardiovascular (CV) death and/or CV hospitalization was studied using Cox regression. Results: Based on 415 biomarkers, we identified 2 distinct clusters. Clinical variables associated with cluster 2 were diabetes, impaired renal function, loop diuretics and/or betablockers. In addition, 17 biomarkers were higher expressed in cluster 2 vs. 1. Patients in cluster 2 vs. those in 1 experienced higher rates of CV death/CV hospitalization (adj. HR 1.93, 95% CI 1.12–3.32, p = 0.017). Complex-network analyses linked these biomarkers to immune system activation, signal transduction cascades, cell interactions and metabolism. Conclusion: Unsupervised machine-learning algorithms applied to a wide range of biomarkers identified 2 HFpEF clusters with different CV phenotypes and outcomes. The identified pathways may provide a basis for future research.Clinical significance More insight is obtained in the mechanisms related to poor outcome in HFpEF patients since it was demonstrated that biomarkers associated with the high-risk cluster were related to the immune system, signal transduction cascades, cell interactions and metabolism Biomarkers (and pathways) identified in this study may help select high-risk HFpEF patients which could be helpful for the inclusion/exclusion of patients in future trials. Our findings may be the basis of investigating therapies specifically targeting these pathways and the potential use of corresponding markers potentially identifying patients with distinct mechanistic bioprofiles most likely to respond to the selected mechanistically targeted therapies.

Abstract

International audience; During the last few years, deep supervised learning models have been shown to achieve state-of-the-art results for Natural Language Processing tasks. Most of these models are trained by minimizing the commonly used cross-entropy loss. However, the latter may suffer from several shortcomings such as sub-optimal generalization and unstable fine-tuning. Inspired by the recent works on self-supervised contrastive representation learning, we present SimSCL, a framework for binary text classification task that relies on two simple concepts: (i) Sampling positive and negative examples given an anchor by considering that sentences belonging to the same class as the anchor as positive examples and samples belonging to a different class as negative examples and (ii) Using a novel fully-supervised contrastive loss that enforces more compact clustering by leveraging label information more effectively. The experimental results show that our framework outperforms the standard cross-entropy loss in several benchmark datasets. Further experiments on Moroccan and Algerian dialects demonstrate that our framework also works well for under-resource languages.

Abstract

International audience; We investigate which represented spaces enjoy the fixed-point property, which is the property that every continuous multi-valued function has a fixed-point. We study the basic theory of this notion and of its uniform version. We provide a complete characterization of countable-based spaces with the fixed-point property, showing that they are exactly the pointed ω-continuous dcpos. We prove that the spaces whose lattice of open sets enjoys the fixed-point property are exactly the countably-based spaces. While the role played by fixed-point free functions in the diagonal argument is well-known, we show how it can be adapted to fixed-point free multi-valued functions, and apply the technique to identify the base-complexity of the Kleene-Kreisel spaces, which was an open problem.

International audience; At CANS'20, El Housni and Guillevic introduced a new 2-chain of pairing-friendly elliptic curves for recursive zero-knowledge Succinct Non-interactive ARguments of Knowledge (zk-SNARKs) made of the former BLS12-377 curve (a Barreto–Lynn–Scott curve over a 377-bit prime field) and the new BW6-761 curve (a Brezing–Weng curve of embedding degree 6 over a 761-bit prime field). First we generalise the curve construction, the pairing formulas (e : G1 × G2 → GT) and the group operations to any BW6 curve defined on top of any BLS12 curve, forming a family of 2-chain pairing-friendly curves.Second, we investigate other possible 2-chain families made on top of the BLS12 and BLS24 curves. We compare BW6 to Cocks–Pinch curves of higher embedding degrees 8 and 12 (CP8, CP12) at the 128-bit security level. We derive formulas for efficient optimal ate and optimal Tate pairings on our new CP curves. We show that for both BLS12 and BLS24, the BW6 construction always gives the fastest pairing and curve arithmetic compared to Cocks–Pinch curves. Finally, we suggest a short list of curves suitable for Groth16 and KZG-based universal SNARKs and present an optimized implementation of these curves. Based on Groth16 and PlonK (a KZG-based SNARK) implementations in the gnark ecosystem, we obtain that the BLS12-377/BW6-761 pair is optimized for the former while the BLS24-315/BW6-672 pair is optimized for the latter.

Abstract

Guided by insights on the mapping class group of a surface, we give experimental evidence that the upper bound recently proven on the diameter of the flip graph of a surface by Despré, Schlenker, and Teillaud (SoCG'20) is largely overestimated. To obtain this result, we propose a set of techniques allowing us to actually perform experiments. We solve arithmetic issues by proving a density result on rationally described genus two hyperbolic surfaces, and we rely on a description of surfaces allowing us to propose a data structure on which flips can be efficiently implemented.

Abstract

Timing side-channels are arguably one of the main sources of vulnerabilities in cryptographic implementations. One effective mitigation against timing side-channels is to write programs that do not perform secret-dependent branches and memory accesses. This mitigation, known as "cryptographic constant-time", is adopted by several popular cryptographic libraries. This paper focuses on compilation of cryptographic constant-time programs, and more specifically on the following question: is the code generated by a realistic compiler for a constant-time source program itself provably constant-time? Surprisingly, we answer the question positively for a mildly modified version of the CompCert compiler, a formally verified and moderately optimizing compiler for C. Concretely, we modify the CompCert compiler to eliminate sources of potential leakage. Then, we instrument the operational semantics of CompCert intermediate languages so as to be able to capture cryptographic constant-time. Finally, we prove that the modified CompCert compiler preserves constant-time. Our mechanization maximizes reuse of the CompCert correctness proof, through the use of new proof techniques for proving preservation of constant-time. These techniques achieve complementary trade-offs between generality and tractability of proof effort, and are of independent interest.

Abstract

International audience; This position paper deals with privacy for deep neural networks, more precisely with robustness to membership inference attacks. The current state-of-the-art methods, such as the ones based on differential privacy and training loss regularization, mainly propose approaches that try to improve the compromise between privacy guarantees and decrease in model accuracy. We propose a new research direction that challenges this view, and that is based on novel approximations of the training objective of deep learning models. The resulting loss offers several important advantages with respect to both privacy and model accuracy: it may exploit unlabeled corpora, it both regularizes the model and improves its generalization properties, and it encodes corpora into a latent low-dimensional parametric representation that complies with Federated Learning architectures. Arguments are detailed in the paper to support the proposed approach and its potential beneficial impact with regard to preserving both privacy and quality of deep learning.

Abstract

International audience; This paper explores various attack scenarios on a voice anonymization system using embeddings alignment techniques. We use Wasserstein-Procrustes (an algorithm initially designed for unsupervised translation) or Procrustes analysis to match two sets of x-vectors, before and after voice anonymization, to mimic this transformation as a rotation function. We compute the optimal rotation and compare the results of this approximation to the official Voice Privacy Challenge results. We show that a complex system like the baseline of the Voice Privacy Challenge can be approximated by a rotation, estimated using a limited set of x-vectors. This paper studies the space of solutions for voice anonymization within the specific scope of rotations. Rotations being reversible, the proposed method can recover up to 62% of the speaker identities from anonymized embeddings.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we propose a construction of 2-round tweakable substitution permutation networks using a single secret S-box. This construction is based on non-linear permutation layers using independent round keys, and achieves security beyond the birthday bound in the random permutation model. When instantiated with an n-bit block cipher with ωn-bit keys, the resulting tweakable block cipher, dubbed CTET+, can be viewed as a tweakable enciphering scheme that encrypts ωκ-bit messages for any integer ω ≥ 2 using 5n + κ-bit keys and n-bit tweaks, providing 2n/3-bit security. Compared to the 2-round non-linear SPN analyzed in [CDK+18], we both minimize it by requiring a single permutation, and weaken the requirements on the middle linear layer, allowing better performance. As a result, CTET+ becomes the first tweakable enciphering scheme that provides beyond-birthday-bound security using a single permutation, while its efficiency is still comparable to existing schemes including AES-XTS, EME, XCB and TET. Furthermore, we propose a new tweakable enciphering scheme, dubbed AES6-CTET+, which is an actual instantiation of CTET+ using a reduced round AES block cipher as the underlying secret S-box. Extensive cryptanalysis of this algorithm allows us to claim 127 bits of security.Such tweakable enciphering schemes with huge block sizes become desirable in the context of disk encryption, since processing a whole sector as a single block significantly worsens the granularity for attackers when compared to, for example, AES-XTS, which treats every 16-byte block on the disk independently. Besides, as a huge amount of data is being stored and encrypted at rest under many different keys in clouds, beyond-birthday-bound security will most likely become necessary in the short term.

Abstract

The LogilecSur Project wasinitiated by aworking group set up within the Scientific Council of the Institut National de Jeunes Sourds of Metz. Itspurposeisto improve teaching strategies for reading comprehension with deaf pupils, identified by professionals as a key point for their academic success. These pupils may have as their preferred language: oral French (with or without LPC support), French sign language, or both languages with varying degrees of efficiency for each of them. Asvery few reading self-reliance is observed among them, we postulate that it results from a low degree of the preferredlanguagemastering, whatever it may be. We will present here the frameworkof our exploratory study, aiming at formalising from the outset awritten comprehension approach of the textswhich takes into account both the diversity of linguistic profiles and the language weaknesses of deaf students., Le projet LogilecSur est né d’un groupe de travail constitué au sein du conseil scientifique de l’Institut National de Jeunes Sourds de Metz. Il vise à améliorer les stratégies d’enseignement de la compréhension écrite auprès d’élèves sourds,identifiée par les professionnels comme étant un point nodal de leur réussite scolaire.Ces élèves peuvent avoir pour langue privilégiée le français oral (avec ou sans support de la LPC), la langue des signes française, ou bien ces deux langues avec des degrés d’efficience variables pour chacune. Un manque d’autonomie face aux textes écrits étant observé chez tous, nous postulons qu’il résulte d'un faible degré de maîtrise de la langue privilégiée, quelle qu’elle soit.Nous exposerons ici les premières avancées de notre étude exploratoire,visant à formaliser une démarche d’entrée dans les textes qui tienne compte à la fois de la diversité des profils linguistiques et des lacunes langagières des élèves sourds.

Abstract

International audience; Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems have been shown to perform impressively on many language pairs compared to Statistical Machine Translation (SMT). However, these systems are data-intensive, which is problematic for the majority of language pairs, and especially for low-resource languages. In this work, we address this issue in the case of certain Arabic dialects, those variants of Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) that are spelling non-standard, morphologically rich, and yet resource-poor variants. Here, we have experimented with several multitasking learning strategies to take advantage of the relationships between these dialects. Despite the simplicity of this idea, empirical results show that several multitasking learning strategies are capable of achieving remarkable performance compared to statistical machine translation. For instance, we obtained the BLUE scores for the Algerian → Modern-Standard-Arabic and the Moroccan → Palestinian of 35.06 and 27.55, respectively, while the scores obtained with a statistical method are 15.1 and 18.91 respectively. We show that on 42 machine translation experiments, and despite the use of a small corpus, multitasking learning achieves better performance than statistical machine translation in 88% of cases.

Abstract

International audience; Argues that there are valuating tendencies of active interpretability which, when undertaken by humans, lead to becoming a 'personality' in the stronger senses of the term. These tendencies can be expressed in informal rules and are not exclusive to human action but are underlying tendencies of a logically interpretable world as such. They can be suppressed or ignored in the creation of objects, such as many product objects of contemporary mass technology, which are consequently relatively impersonal. They can also be incorporated directly or potentially in human creations. Historic sailing ships - and seagoing ships in general - often exemplify their fullest incorporation, so that seagoing ships are highly personal objects, which promote high value active interpretation on the part of the humans that use and live in them.

Abstract

International audience; The motivation of our work is the instantiation of a computational view of the cerebral cortex. Kohonen's early definition of self-organizing maps was inspired by the cortical substrate on a local scale and is now a widely used learning algorithm. Following the same path, from biology to computation, the cortex can be interpreted as an architecture made of similar self-organizing modules connected together. To our knowledge, there are no such algorithmic derivation of large architectures of self-organizing modules. This paper presents the behavior of several maps connected one to another as a step towards wider networks of self-organizing maps and shows that this architecture learns a model of inputs and generates predictions in a map without using an additional algorithm. This prediction ability is applied to the control of a quadcopter flying in a corridor.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we are interested in the finegrained complexity of determining whether there is an homomorphism from an input graph G to a fixed graph H (the H-coloring problem). The starting point is that these problems can be viewed as constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), and that (partial) polymorphisms of binary relations are of paramount importance in the study of complexity classes of such CSPs. Thus, we first investigate the expressivity of binary symmetric relations EH and their corresponding (partial) polymorphisms pPol(EH). For irreflexive graphs we observe that there is no pair of graphs H and H such that pPol(EH) ⊆ pPol(E H), unless E H = ∅ or H =H. More generally we show the existence of an nary relation R whose partial polymorphisms strictly subsume those of H and such that CSP(R) is N Pcomplete if and only if H contains an odd cycle of length at most n. Motivated by this we also describe the sets of total polymorphisms of every nontrivial clique, every odd cycle, as well as certain cores. We finish the paper with some noteworthy questions for future research.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper we provide two methods that improve the detection of sound events in domestic environments. First, motivated by the broad categorization of domestic sounds as foreground or background events according to their spectro-temporal structure, we propose to learn a foreground-background classifier jointly with the sound event classifier in a multi-task fashion to improve the generalization of the latter. Second, while the semi-supervised learning capability adopted for training sound event detection systems with synthetic labeled data and unlabeled or partially labeled real data aims to learn invariant representations for both domains, there is still a gap in performance when testing such systems on real environments. To further reduce this data mismatch, we propose a domain adaptation strategy that aligns the empirical distributions of the feature representations of active and inactive frames of synthetic and real recordings via optimal transport. We show that these two approaches lead to enhanced detection performance in terms of the event-based macro F1-score on the DESED dataset.

Abstract

International audience; Sentence splitting involves the segmentation of a sentence into two or more shorter sentences. It is a key component of sentence simplification, has been shown to help human comprehension and is a useful preprocessing step for NLP tasks such as summarisation and relation extraction. While several methods and datasets have been proposed for developing sentence splitting models, little attention has been paid to how sentence splitting interacts with discourse structure. In this work, we focus on cases where the input text contains a discourse connective, which we refer to as discourse-based sentence splitting. We create synthetic and organic datasets for discourse-based splitting and explore different ways of combining these datasets using different model architectures. We show that pipeline models which use discourse structure to mediate sentence splitting outperform end-to-end models in learning the various ways of expressing a discourse relation but generate text that is less grammatical; that large scale synthetic data provides a better basis for learning than smaller scale organic data; and that training on discourse-focused, rather than on general sentence splitting data provides a better basis for discourse splitting.

Abstract

International audience; We define the mod k-synchronization problem as a weakening of the Firing Squad problem, where all nodes fire not at the same round, but at rounds that are all equal modulo k. We propose an algorithm that achieves mod k-synchronization in any dynamic network where there exist – possibly several – fixed spanning stars within each period of Delta consecutive rounds. In other words, we require that there always exists a temporal path of length at most Delta between some fixed node gamma and every other node. As opposed to the perfect synchronization achieved in the Firing Squad problem, mod k-synchronization thus does not require any strong connectivity property in the network. In our algorithm, all the nodes "know'' Delta, but they ignore what nodes are the centers of the spanning stars. We also prove that if the bound Delta for guaranteeing fixed spanning stars exists but is unknown to the agents, then mod k-synchronization is impossible.All nodes in our algorithm fire in less that 6kn + 4k rounds after all nodes become active, but unfortunately use unbounded counters. We then propose a refinement of this algorithm so that it becomes finite state while maintaining the same time complexity. The correctness of our first algorithm has been formally established in the proof assistant Isabelle.

Abstract

The aim of the paper is to perform 3D radiative transfer calculations in combustion gas mixtures. For this purpose, a parallel modified Discrete Ordinates Method with a cell-vertex formulation on unstructured tetrahedral grid is proposed for solving the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) in realistic geometries. Several recent formulations of the weighted-sum-of-gray-gases (WSGG) model are implemented. To reduce the false scattering, the cell-vertex formulation is combined with an Exponential scheme and is compared to the Step scheme. The results are then compared with published results on non-isothermal and non-homogeneous gas mixtures. The use of non-gray WSGG models shows a very good level of accuracy for the evaluation of wall heat transfer and radiative heat source. The Exponential scheme is more accurate than the Step scheme. The summation over the wavenumber spectrum of the radiative model is usually carried out after having computed the radiative quantities for each discrete angular direction. By summing first over the wavenumber spectrum, a reduction in the computation time is significantly obtained, up to a factor of 16 on a case study. Also, additionnal significant speedup is obtained with an efficient distributed and multi-threaded parallel algorithm. When the Step scheme is used, the computation time increases very slightly with the number of gray gases. The procedure to speed up the calculations can be applied to any arbitrary numerical method for solving the spectral RTE.

A key step of the process is to define, within each planar layer, the trajectories along which material is deposited to form the final shape. The direction of these trajectories triggers an anisotropy in the fabricated parts, which directly affects their properties, from their mechanical behavior to their appearance. Controlling this anisotropy paves the way to novel applications, from stronger parts to controlled deformations and surface patterning.This work introduces a method to generate trajectories that precisely follow an input direction field while simultaneously avoiding intra- and inter-layer defects. Our method results in spatially coherent trajectories - all follow the specified direction field throughout the layers - while providing precise control over their inter-layer arrangement. This allows us to generate a staggered layout of trajectories across layers, preventing unavoidable tiny gaps from forming tunnel-shaped voids throughout a part volume.Our approach is simple, robust, easy to implement, and scales linearly with the input volume. It builds upon recent results in procedural generation of oscillating patterns, generating a signal in the 3D domain that oscillates with a frequency matching the deposition beads width while following the input direction field. Trajectories are extracted with a process akin to a marching square.

Abstract

Programming robots often involves expert knowledge in both the robot itself and the task to execute. An alternative to direct programming is for a human to show examples of the task execution and have the robot perform the task based on these examples, in a scheme known as learning or programming from demonstration. We propose and study a generic and simple learning-from-demonstration framework. Our approach is to combine the demonstrated commands according to the similarity between the demonstrated sensory trajectories and the current replay trajectory. This tracking is solely performed based on sensor values and time and completely dispenses with the usually expensive step of precomputing an internal model of the task. We analyse the behaviour of the proposed model in several simulated conditions and test it on two different robotic platforms. Abstract

International audience; Knowing the geometrical and acoustical parameters of a room may benefit applications such as audio augmented reality, speech dereverberation or audio forensics. In this paper, we study the problem of jointly estimating the total surface area, the volume, as well as the frequency-dependent reverberation time and mean surface absorption of a room in a blind fashion, based on two-channel noisy speech recordings from multiple, unknown source-receiver positions. A novel convolutional neural network architecture leveraging both single-and inter-channel cues is proposed and trained on a large, realistic simulated dataset. Results on both simulated and real data show that using multiple observations in one room significantly reduces estimation errors and variances on all target quantities, and that using two channels helps the estimation of surface and volume. The proposed model outperforms a recently proposed blind volume estimation method on the considered datasets.

Abstract

A protocol called the "honeycomb code", or generically a "Floquet code", was introduced by Hastings and Haah in \cite{hastings_dynamically_2021}. The honeycomb code is a subsystem code based on the honeycomb lattice with zero logical qubits but such that there exists a schedule for measuring two-body gauge checks leaving enough room at all times for two protected logical qubits. Abstract

International audience; Face frontalization consists of synthesizing a frontallyviewed face from an arbitrarily-viewed one. The main contribution of this paper is a robust frontalization method that preserves non-rigid facial deformations, i.e. expressions, to perform lip reading. The method iteratively estimates the rigid transformation (scale, rotation, and translation) and the non-rigid deformation between 3D landmarks extracted from an arbitrarily-viewed face, and 3D vertices parameterized by a deformable shape model. An important merit of the method is its ability to deal with large Gaussian and non-Gaussian errors in the data. For that purpose, we use the generalized Student-t distribution. The associated EM algorithm assigns a weight to each observed landmark, the higher the weight the more important the landmark, thus favoring landmarks that are only affected by rigid head movements. We propose to use the zero-mean normalized cross-correlation (ZNCC) score to evaluate the ability to preserve facial expressions. We show that the method, when incorporated into a deep lipreading pipeline, considerably improves the word classification score on an in-the-wild benchmark.

Abstract

International audience; By using a qualitative method (focus group) with 42 seniors, this exploratory study is aiming to investigate attitudes and opinions of seniors about five types of trainers/coaches (self-training, human personal trainer, robot, virtual immersion, E-coach) to promote physical activity. Our results tend to confirm that a hybrid solution such as an E-coach (combining human appearance and digital dimensions) could be the most relevant and acceptable for elderly people to promote and maintain physical activity at home.

Abstract

Analogical proportions are statements of the form "A is to B as C is to D" that are used for several reasoning and classification tasks in artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP). For instance, there are analogy based approaches to semantics as well as to morphology. In fact, symbolic approaches were developed to solve or to detect analogies between character strings, e.g., the axiomatic approach as well as that based on Kolmogorov complexity. In this paper, we propose a deep learning approach to detect morphological analogies, for instance, with reinflexion or conjugation. We present empirical results that show that our framework is competitive with the above-mentioned state of the art symbolic approaches. Abstract

The study of articulatory gestures has a wide spectrum of applications, notably in speech production and recognition. Sets of phonemes, as well as their articulation, are language-specific; however, existing MRI databases mostly include English speakers. In our present work, we introduce a dataset acquired with MRI from 10 healthy native French speakers. A corpus consisting of synthetic sentences was used to ensure a good coverage of the French phonetic context. A real-time MRI technology with temporal resolution of 20 ms was used to acquire vocal tract images of the participants speaking. The sound was recorded simultaneously with MRI, denoised and temporally aligned with the images. The speech was transcribed to obtain phoneme-wise segmentation of sound. We also acquired static 3D MR images for a wide list of French phonemes.
