Abstract

A substantial fraction of systematic uncertainties in neutrino oscillation experiments stem from the lack of precision in modeling the nuclear target in neutrino-nucleus interactions. Whilst this has driven significant progress in the development of improved nuclear models for neutrino scattering, it is crucial that the models used in neutrino data analyses be accompanied by parameters and associated uncertainties that allow the coverage of plausible nuclear physics. Based on constraints from electron scattering data, we propose such a set of parameters, which can be applied to nuclear shell models, and test their application to the Benhar et al. [Nucl. Phys. A579, 493 (1994)] spectral function model. The parametrization is validated through a series of maximum likelihood fits to cross section measurements made by the T2K and MINERvA experiments, which also permit an exploration of the power of near-detector data to provide constraints on the parameters in neutrino oscillation analyses.

Abstract

In all living cells, genomic DNA is compacted through interactions with dedicated proteins and/or the formation of plectonemic coils. In bacteria, DNA compaction is achieved dynamically, coordinated with dense and constantly changing transcriptional activity. H-NS, a major bacterial nucleoid structuring protein, is of special interest due to its interplay with RNA polymerase. H-NS:DNA nucleoprotein filaments inhibit transcription initiation by RNA polymerase. However, the discovery that genes silenced by H-NS can be activated by transcription originating from neighboring regions has suggested that elongating RNA polymerases can disassemble H-NS:DNA filaments. In this study, we present evidence that transcription-induced counter-silencing does not require transcription to reach the silenced gene; rather, it exerts its effect at a distance. Counter-silencing is suppressed by introducing a DNA gyrase binding site within the intervening segment, suggesting that the long-range effect results from transcription-driven positive DNA supercoils diffusing toward the silenced gene. We propose a model wherein H-NS:DNA complexes form in vivo on negatively supercoiled DNA, with H-NS bridging the two arms of the plectoneme. Rotational diffusion of positive supercoils generated by neighboring transcription will cause the H-NS-bound negativelysupercoiled plectoneme to “unroll” disrupting the H-NS bridges and releasing H-NS.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV, respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result.

Abstract

Starting from Navier-Stokes’ equation we derive two shallow water multilayer models for yield stress fluids, depending on the asymptotic analysis. One of them takes into account the normal stress contributions, making possible to recover a pseudoplug layer instead of a purely plug zone. A specific numerical scheme is designed to solve this model thanks to a finite volume discretization. It involves well-balancing techniques to be able to compute accurately the transitions between yielded and unyielded (or pseudoplug) zones, an important feature of the original partial differential equations’ model. We perform numerical simulations on various test cases relevant to these physics: analytical solution of a uniform flow, steady solutions for arrested state, and a viscoplastic dam break. Simulations agree well when we perform comparisons with physical experiments of the group of Christophe Ancey (EPFL) and we make a comparative study including shallow water models and lubrication models that they present in Ancey et al. (2012) [3]. Thanks to the multilayer structure of our model, we can go further on the description of the vertical structure associated to the (bottom) sheared layer and the top (pseudo-)plug layer.

5. Increasing the Scalability of Toxin-Intein Orthogonal Combinations

Abstract

Inteins are proteins embedded into host proteins from which they are excised in an autocatalytic reaction. Specifically, split inteins are separated into two independent fragments that reconstitute the host protein during the catalytic process. We recently developed a novel strategy for the specific killing of pathogenic and antibiotic resistant bacteria based on toxin-intein combinations. Bacterial type II toxin-antitoxin systems are protein modules in which the toxin can provoke cell death whereas the antitoxin inhibits toxin activity. Although our previous system was based on a split intein (iDnaE) and the CcdB toxin, we demonstrated that iDnaE is able to reconstitute four different toxins. To expand the applicability of our system by widening the repertoire of toxin-intein combinations for complex set-ups, we introduced a second intein, iDnaX, which was artificially split. We demonstrate that iDnaX is able to reconstitute the four toxins, and we manage to reduce its scar size to facilitate their use. In addition, we prove the orthogonality of both inteins (iDnaE and iDnaX) through a toxin reconstitution assay, thus opening the possibility for complex set-ups based on these toxin-intein modules. This could be used to develop specific antimicrobial and other biotechnological applications.

Abstract

Phosphine-boranes do not promote oxidative addition of acyl chlorides to gold, but the phosphine-borane gold triflimide complex [i Pr2P(o-C6H4)BCy2]AuNTf2 was found to catalyze the coupling of acyl chlorides and aryl stannanes. The reaction involves aryl/chloride-bridged dinuclear gold(I) complexes as key intermediates, as substantiated by spectroscopic and crystallographic analyses. Similar to Pd(0)/Pd(II)- catalyzed Stille coupling with phosphine-borane ligands, the gold-catalyzed variant shows complete chemoselectivity for acyl chlorides over aryl iodides and bromides, enabling straightforward access to halogenated aryl ketones.

Abstract

L’article prend pour objet la genèse de la première mise en scène de L’Amante Anglaise de Marguerite Duras due à Claude Régy, une genèse heureuse, du fait de l’influence réciproque entre l’écriture et la scène. Il affronte, sans la résoudre, une question théorique majeure de la critique génétique appliquée au théâtre: l’œuvre à étudier est-elle le texte dramatique, ou bien le spectacle? Selon que l’on privilégie la première réponse ou la seconde, l’axe organisateur du dossier génétique est le travail scriptural de l’auteur, toutes les mises en scène de L’Amante anglaise formant alors un ensemble théoriquement unifié, ou bien celui du metteur en scène, l’ensemble cohérent étant constitué par toutes les créations de ce dernier. L’étude explore une troisième voie en stipulant un nécessaire croisement des deux hypothèses.

Abstract

Objectif : Ce module vise à sensibiliser aux problématiques et enjeux de la réanalyse de deux manières : par une meilleure connaissance de l’état et de la littérature disponible sur la réanalyse en France et à l’étranger d’une part ; par une sensibilisation aux grandes questions qui organisent les réflexions sur les conditions de possibilité de la réanalyse d’autre part. Démarche pédagogique : On veillera à retracer les grandes lignes du développement de cette pratique dans les sciences sociales et l’état le plus actuel des recherches menées en France. Il s’agira notamment de souligner les conditions de la réanalyse à partir d’exemples de controverses. Nous aborderons ainsi plusieurs enjeux, notamment : - les intérêts de la réanalyse, tant du point de vue de l’utilisateur de données que de celui qui partage ses données ; - les formes de réanalyse selon le rapport aux chercheurs premiers et aux objectifs poursuivis ; - les étapes préalables nécessaires avant de se lancer dans une réanalyse (compréhension du lien entre orientations théoriques et méthodologiques de l’enquête ; appréhension de la structuration du corpus, etc.) ; - la contextualisation des données (documentation). Un atelier sur la mise en pratique de la réanalyse complète ce module.

Abstract

Objectif : Il s’agira de faire le point sur l’étape préalable à l’analyse de corpus textuels, qu’elle soit assistée par logiciels ou complètement libre (méthode “papier-crayon”), en l’illustrant de plusieurs méthodes tirées de la banque d’enquêtes beQuali. L’idée est de montrer comment l’étape de préparation peut être menée en pratique, à partir d’enquêtes exemplaires de ces différentes démarches. Démarche pédagogique : Nous aborderons la fabrique de “métadonnées”, visualisations ou documents supports qui permettent de garder trace des principales informations que l’on souhaite pouvoir facilement mobiliser sur un terrain donné, à propos de tel ou tel individu ou groupes d’individus. Cela va de la remise en mots ou en forme des données brutes à une conceptualisation plus ou moins poussée des données, permettant de construire des hypothèses, une théorisation. En particulier, nous montrerons les principales formes que ces documents supports peuvent prendre : mémos, résumés, synthèses d’entretiens, graphes ou cartes mentales, etc. à partir d’enquêtes du catalogue beQuali 3 exemples contrastés de documents seront ainsi commentés - schéma, texte, tableau - dans le but de montrer comment ils se situent dans une chaîne d’analyse et comment l’information y est organisée selon le processus intellectuel et la démarche d’analyse - représentation graphique, textuelle, quantifié.

Abstract

Targeted killing of pathogenic bacteria without harming beneficial members of host microbiota holds promise as a strategy to cure disease and limit both antimicrobial-related dysbiosis and development of antimicrobial resistance. We engineer toxins that are split by inteins and deliver them by conjugation into a mixed population of bacteria. Our toxin–intein antimicrobial is only activated in bacteria that harbor specific transcription factors. We apply our antimicrobial to specifically target and kill antibiotic-resistant Vibrio cholerae present in mixed populations. We find that 100% of antibiotic-resistant V. cholerae receiving the plasmid are killed. Escape mutants were extremely rare (10−6–10−8). We show that conjugation and specific killing of targeted bacteria occurs in the microbiota of zebrafish and crustacean larvae, which are natural hosts for Vibrio spp. Toxins split with inteins could form the basis of precision antimicrobials to target pathogens that are antibiotic resistant.

Is it possible to apply to theatre the genetic method, known and used in the field of literature? A theatrical work is a heterogeneous set of textual and scenic data, an ephemeral and fleeting entity, because every staging – but also every presentation – necessarily produces new modifications: text cuts; variations in body movements; different voice timbres; lighting; the pace of the event, etc. In these conditions, how is it possible to retrace the genesis of the work, among objects of several kinds and with multiple finishes?, Est-il possible d’ap- pliquer au théâtre la méthode génétique, connue pour avoir fait ses preuves en littérature? L’œuvre théâtrale est un ensemble hétérogène de données textuelles et scéniques, une entité éphémère et fugitive, puisque toute mise en scène, mais aussi chaque représentation en- gendre nécessairement de nouvelles modifications: coupures dans le texte, variantes dans les mouvements des corps, les timbres des voix, les lumières, le rythme de l’événement, etc. Comment, dans ces conditions, retracer la genèse de l’œuvre, entre objets de diverses sortes et multiples achèvements?, É possível aplicar ao teatro o método genético, conhecido e utilizado no domínio da literatura? Abstract

The aim of this work is to present some strategies to solve numerically controllability problems for the two-dimensional heat equation, the Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The main idea is to adapt the Fursikov-Imanuvilov formulation, see [A.V. Fursikov, O.Yu. Imanuvilov: Controllability of Evolutions Equations, Lectures Notes Series, Vol. 34, Seoul National University, 1996]; this approach has been followed recently for the onedimensional heat equation by the first two authors. More precisely, we minimize over the class of admissible null controls a functional that involves weighted integrals of the state and the control, with weights that blow up near the final time. The associated optimality conditions can be viewed as a differential system in the three variables x1, x2 and t that is second–order in time and fourth–order in space, completed with appropriate boundary conditions. We present several mixed formulations of the problems and, then, associated mixed finite element Lagrangian approximations that are easy to handle. Finally, we exhibit some numerical experiments.

16. Processamento do verbo francês através da decomposição lexical

Abstract

O presente trabalho realizou uma investigação psicolinguística da decomposição morfológica verbal no acesso lexical em francês. Aplicou-se um experimento de decisão lexical visual com diferentes tipos de estruturas verbais como estímulos, a fim de identificar os processos de decomposição lexical, a estrutura hierárquica do verbo francês e o processamento dos diferentes morfemas para o acesso lexical no reconhecimento visual de verbos. Testaram-se diferentes tipos de verbos e pseudoverbos com as seguintes estruturas: a. morfologicamente ilegais (*abrou), b. contendo somente base existente (*[aim]ou), c. contendo somente sufixo flexional existente (*abr[ons]), d. inexistentes mas morfologicamente legais (*[aim][ir]) e e. existentes e morfologicamente legais ([[aim][ons]]). Ainda, testaram-se verbos com: a. um (aim[ons]) ou b. dois (aim[i][ons]) sufixos flexionais, e a mesma testagem foi feita com pseudoverbos (*abr[ons], *abr[i][ons]), para identificar diferenças no processamento morfossintático. As análises estatísticas apresentaram diferenças significativas entre pseudoverbos contendo apenas base existente e verbos existentes, e entre pseudoverbos contendo apenas sufixo flexional existente e verbos inexistentes mas morfologicamente legais. Houve diferenças significativas em relação ao número de sufixos flexionais nos pseudoverbos contendo somente sufixo flexional existente, assim como nos verbos existentes e morfologicamente legais. Assim, esse estudo estabeleceu a hierarquia do processamento dos diferentes morfemas que constituem o verbo francês. Os resultados mostram que todos os verbos do francês são passíveis de decomposição, sendo primeiramente decompostos em base e sufixos flexionais e posteriormente possuem seu morfema lexical da base ativado para o acesso semântico. Abstract

The PII protein is a signal integrator involved in the regulation of nitrogen metabolism in bacteria and plants. Upon sensing of cellular carbon and energy availability, PII conveys the signal by interacting with target proteins, thereby modulating their biological activity. Plant PII is located to plastids; therefore, to identify new PII target proteins, PII-affinity chromatography of soluble extracts from Arabidopsis leaf chloroplasts was performed. Several proteins were retained only when Mg-ATP was present in the binding medium and they were specifically released from the resin by application of a 2-oxoglutarate-containing elution buffer. Mass spectroscopy of SDS/PAGE-resolved protein bands identified the biotin carboxyl carrier protein subunits of the plastidial acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) and three other proteins containing a similar biotin/lipoyl-binding motif as putative PII targets. ACCase is a key enzyme initiating the synthesis of fatty acids in plastids. In in vitro reconstituted assays supplemented with exogenous ATP, recombinant Arabidopsis PII inhibited chloroplastic ACCase activity, and this was completely reversed in the presence of 2-oxoglutarate, pyruvate, or oxaloacetate. The inhibitory effect was PII-dosedependent and appeared to be PII-specific because ACCase activity was not altered in the presence of other tested proteins. PII decreased the Vmax of the ACCase reaction without altering the Km for acetyl-CoA. These data show that PII function has evolved between bacterial and plant systems to control the carbon metabolism pathway of fatty acid synthesis in plastids.

Abstract

International audience; Digital data plays a central role in sciences, journalism, environment, digital humanities, etc. Open Data sharing initiatives lead to many large, interesting datasets being shared online. Some of these are RDF graphs, but other formats like CSV, relational, property graphs, JSON or XML documents are also frequent.Practitioners need to understand a dataset to decide whether it is suited to their needs. Datasets may come with a schema and/or may be summarized, however the first is not always provided and the latter is often too technical for non-IT users. To overcome these limitations, we present an end-to-end dataset abstraction approach, which (i) applies on any (semi)structured data model; (ii) computes a description meant for human users, in the form of an Entity- Relationship diagram; (ii) integrates Information Extraction and data profiling to classify dataset entities among a large set of intelligible categories. We implemented our approach in a system called Abstra, and detail its performance on various datasets.

Abstract

In dial-a-ride systems involving autonomous vehicles circulating along a circuit, a fleet of vehicles must serve clients who request rides between stations of the circuit such that the total number of pickup and drop-off operations is minimized. In this paper, we focus on a unitary variant where each client requests a single place in the vehicles and all the clients must be served within a single tour of the circuit. Such unitary variant induces a combinatorial optimization problem for which we introduce a nontrivial special case that is polynomially solvable when the capacity of each vehicle is at most 2 but it is NP-Hard otherwise. We also study the polytope associated with the solutions to this problem. We introduce new families of valid inequalities and give necessary and sufficient conditions under which they are facet-defining. Based on these inequalities, we devise an efficient branch-and-cut algorithm that outperforms the state-of-the-art commercial solvers.

Abstract

International audience; For the first time, a Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 transparent spinel ceramic has been fully densified by spark plasma sintering. XRD measurements show that this ceramic is composed of a pure cubic spinel phase. SEM analysis revealed a homogeneous and dense microstructure with the average grain size being 200 ± 100 nm. The transmittance of these fine-grained ceramics reached 70 % in the visible range and is very close to 80 % at 2 µm, thus close to the Tmax value deduced from the measurement of the refractive index. The ceramics exhibit excellent mechanical properties with a Young modulus of 222 GPa, a Vickers hardness of 14.25 GPa and a thermal conductivity of 7.3 W.m−1. K−1. By doping with Cr3+ ions, transparent Zn1.1Ga1.8Ge0.1O4 ceramics present both a red luminescence and a long-lasting afterglow during several minutes. Moreover, a near infrared broadband emission at 1.3 µm is also achieved with Ni2+ ions.

A $k$-edge-weighting of $G$ is a mapping $\omega:E(G)\longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$. The edge-weighting of $G$ naturally induces a vertex-colouring $\sigma_{\omega}:V(G)\longrightarrow \mathbb{N}$ given by$\sigma_{\omega}(v)=\sum_{u\in N_G(v)}\omega(vu)$ for every $v\in V(G)$. The edge-weighting $\omega$ is neighbour sum distinguishing if it yields a proper vertex-colouring $\sigma_{\omega}$, \emph{i.e.}, $\sigma_{\omega}(u)\neq \sigma_{\omega}(v)$ for every edge $uv$ of $G$.We investigate a neighbour sum distinguishing edge-weighting with local constraints, namely, we assume that the set of edges incident to a vertex of large degree is not monochromatic. A graph is nice if it has no components isomorphic to $K_2$. We prove that every nice graph with maximum degree at most~5 admits a neighbour sum distinguishing $(\Delta(G)+2)$-edge-weighting such that all the vertices of degree at least~2 are incident with at least two edges of different weights. Furthermore, we prove that every nice graph admits a neighbour sum distinguishing $7$-edge-weighting such that all the vertices of degree at least~6 are incident with at least two edges of different weights. Finally, we show that nice bipartite graphs admit a neighbour sum distinguishing $6$-edge-weighting such that all the vertices of degree at least~2 are incident with at least two edges of different weights.

Abstract

International audience; In the field of flash sintering, microwave energy represents an interesting way to densify ceramics complex shapes, thanks to a contactless volumetric heating. Attaining a fast and homogeneous heating is a critical parameter and hybrid heating, using silicon carbide susceptors, is generally used. In this study, an original multiple susceptors cascade strategy is developed, using both SiC and 3D-printed ZrO2 susceptors. This novel configuration follows perfectly the flash heating scheme, even for high heating rates up to 1000 K.min-1 and leads to a high stability of the "flash" hybrid heating. Flash microwave sintering produced dense (97% relative density) microstructures within 45 s. Based on comprehensive multiphysics simulations of the overall process, in-situ dilatometry measurements, kinetics method analysis and microstructural characterizations, this work highlights the sintering behavior of zirconia and the temperature distribution during flash microwave sintering.

Abstract

International audience; This study aims to investigate the ability of an imidazolium biobased Zwitterionic Ionic Liquids (ZILs) in enhancing the phytoavailability of copper from garden (G) and vineyard (V) soils using the model plant ryegrass. Uncontaminated and artificially contaminated CuSO4 soils, unamended and ZIL-amended soil modalities were designed. The copper/ZIL mo-lar ratio (1/4) introduced was rationally established based on molecular modeling and on the maximal copper concentration in artificially contaminated soil. Higher accumulation of copper in the shoots was detected for the uncontaminated and copper contaminated ZIL amended V soils (18.9 and 23.3 mg/kg, respectively) contrary to G soils together with a ZIL concentration of around 3% (W/W) detected by LC-MS analyses. These data evidenced a Cu-accumulation improvement of 38% and 66% compared to non-amended V soils (13.6 and 13.9 mg/kg respectively). ZIL would be mainly present under Cu(II)-ZIL4 complexes in the shoots. The impact on the chemical composition of shoot was also studied. The results show that depending on the soils modalitity, the presence of free copper and/or ZIL led to different chemical compositions in lignin and monomeric sugar contents. In the biorefinery context, performances of enzymatic hydrolysis of shoots were also related to the presence of both ZIL and copper under free or complex forms. Ecotoxicity assessment of the vineyard soil samples indicated that the quantity of copper and ZIL remaining in the soils had no sig-nificant toxicity. ZIL amendment in a copper-contaminated soil was demonstrated as being a promising way to promote the valorization of phytoremediation plants.

Abstract

International audience; General interest in solvent-free catalytic processes is driven by the development of environmentally and economically acceptable procedures. Such processes require the use of highly active and stable catalysts. This study reports on the synthesis, characterization, and kinetic evaluation of two highly active Pd catalysts supported on different carbons support, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and few-layer graphene (FLG). These catalysts, with similar Pd loading (∼2 wt%) and containing both Pd single atoms (PdSA) and nanoparticles (PdNP), were systematically tested for solvent-free total hydrogenation of squalene (SQE) to obtain high-purity squalane (SQA). Thanks to the unique cooperative catalysis between PdSA and PdNP involving H-spillover, the activities of both catalysts were high compared to catalysts described in the literature. Solvent-free total hydrogenation of SQE could be performed under mild conditions (120 °C, 20 bar H2, 4 h) using ultralow Pd loading (60 ppm). However, since this reduction reaction is highly exothermic (ΔHR= − 765 kJ.mol−1), heat management during the reactor operation with these highly active catalysts is crucial to avoid deactivation and thermal runaway. Under these conditions, Pd/FLG was highly active but deactivated, unlike Pd/CNT, which still has high activity, but does not deactivate. Characterizations (ICP, XPS, Raman, TPD-MS, HAADF-STEM) of the Pd/FLG catalyst before and after reaction, supported by calculations based on density functional theory, allowed us to propose a new mechanism of catalyst deactivation involving the chemical reduction of specific surface oxygen groups of the carbon support induced by H-spillover.

Abstract

In this work, we present a novel method called WSDesc to learn 3D local descriptors in a weakly supervised manner for robust point cloud registration. Our work builds upon recent 3D CNN-based descriptor extractors, which leverage a voxel-based representation to parameterize local geometry of 3D points. Instead of using a predefined fixed-size local support in voxelization, we propose to learn the optimal support in a data-driven manner. To this end, we design a novel differentiable voxelization layer that can back-propagate the gradient to the support size optimization. To train the extracted descriptors, we propose a novel registration loss based on the deviation from rigidity of 3D transformations, and the loss is weakly supervised by the prior knowledge that the input point clouds have partial overlap, without requiring ground-truth alignment information. Abstract

International audience; Hypothesis: Slippery Omniphobic Covalently Attached Liquids (SOCAL) have been proposed for making omnirepellent thin films of self-assembled dimethylsiloxane polymerbrushes grafted from silica surfaces. Smooth and flat at very small scale, these fluid surfaces could exhibit a more complex multiscale structure though showing very weak contact angle hysteresis (less than 5°).Experiment: In this work, coatings were deposited on glass surfaces from an acidic dimethoxydimethylsilane solution under carefully controlled relative humidity. Ellipsometry mapping was used to analyze the surface structuration with nanometric thickness sensitivity. The sliding properties were determined using a drop shape analyzer with a tilting device, and chemical analyses of the coatings were performed using on-surface techniques (XPS, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy).Findings: Coated materials possessed an unexpected surface structure with multiscale semispherical-like features, which surprisingly, did not increase the contact angle hysteresis. A careful study of some parameters of the coating process and the related evolution of the surface properties allowed us to propose a new model of the chemical organization of the polymer to support this remarkable liquid-like behavior. These structures are made of endgrafted strongly adsorbed Guiselin brushes with humidity-dependent thickness: the higher the humidity, the thinner and the more slippery the coating.

Abstract

Robust projections of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) are critical as it provides 80% of the annual precipitation to more than 1 billion people who are very vulnerable to climate change. However, even over the historical period, state-of-the-art climate models have difficulties in reproducing the observed ISMR trends and are affected by a large intermodel spread, which questions the reliability of ISMR projections. Such uncertainty could come from internal variability or model biases. Here, we study the impact of the latter on the historical forced change of ISMR in 34 models from CMIP6. First, we show that models’ biases over India do not significantly impact how they simulate the historical change of ISMR. However, we do find statistically significant relationships between ISMR historical forced changes and remote rainfall and temperature biases within the tropics by using a maximum covariance analysis (MCA). Our results highlight the key role of tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) mean state biases as an important source of intermodel spread in the ISMR change. The physical mechanisms underlying these statistical relationships between ISMR change and the intermodel spread of Pacific SST biases are finally explored. We found that models having El Niño/La Niña–like mean SST bias in the Pacific tend to exhibit El Niño/La Niña–like changes over the historical period, impacting ISMR through a shift in the Walker circulation and Rossby wave propagation across the Pacific.

Abstract

International audience; Diagenesis has been recognized for decades to significantly alter the trace elements biogenic signatures in fossil tooth enamel and bone that are routinely used for paleobiological and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. This signature is modified during diagenesis according to a complex continuum between two main processes, addition and substitution. For an additive-like, or early diagenesis, the trace elements biogenic profiles can be restored by leaching secondary minerals, but this technique is inefficient for a substitutive-like, or extensive diagenesis for which secondary trace elements are incorporated into the biogenic mineral. This scheme is however unclear for Ca, the major cation in tooth enamel and bone hydroxylapatite, whose stable isotope composition (δ44/42Ca) also conveys biological and environmental information. We present a suite of leaching experiments for monitoring δ44/42Ca values in artificial and natural fossil enamel and bone from different settings. The results show that enamel δ44/42Ca values are insensitive to an additive-like diagenesis that involves the formation of secondary Ca-carbonate mineral phases, while bone shows a consistent offset toward 44Ca-enriched values, that can be restored to the biogenic baseline by a leaching procedure. In the context of a substitutive-like diagenesis, bone exhibits constant δ44/42Ca values, insensitive to leaching, and shows a REE pattern symptomatic of extensive diagenesis. Such a REE pattern can be observed in fossil enamel for which δ44/42Ca values are still fluctuating and follow a trophic pattern. We conclude that Ca isotopes in fossil enamel are probably not prone to extensive diagenesis and argue that this immunity is due to the very low porosity of enamel that cannot accommodate enough secondary minerals to significantly modify the isotopic composition of the enamel Ca pool.

Abstract

International audience; The Super Separator Spectrometer-Low Energy Branch (Sl. 268 3-LEB) is a low-energy radioactive ion beam experiment under commissioning as part of the GANIL-SPIRAL2 facility. It will be used for the production and study of exotic nuclei by in-gas laser ionization and spectroscopy (IGLIS), decay spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. We report recent results from the off-line commissioning of Sl. 268 3-LEB, including first laser spectroscopy measurements in both the gas cell and the supersonic gas jet, the determination of the transport efficiency of laser ions from the gas cell through the RFQ chain, and time-of-flight measurements with the multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer PILGRIM. The measurements were performed using erbium, introduced by evaporation from a heated filament in the gas environment. The reported laser spectroscopy results include a characterization of the pressure broadening in the gas cell, proof-of-principle isotope shift measurements, and hyperfine-structure measurements.

Abstract

BackgroundCOVID-19 is a complex multisystem disease, frequently associated with kidney injury. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we observed a striking increase in the incidence of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (aTIN) without or with uveitis (TINUs) among children. This prompted us to examine whether SARS-CoV-2 might be the underlying trigger.MethodsWe conducted a French nationwide retrospective cohort study. We included all consecutive children diagnosed with aTIN or TINUs of undetermined cause between April-2020 and March-2021. SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses were tested by a luciferase immunoprecipitation system and compared to age-matched controls. Immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence and molecular microbiology analyses were performed on kidney biopsies.ResultsForty-eight children were included with a median age at diagnosis of 14.7 years (9.4-17.6). aTIN and TINUs incidence rates increased 3-fold and 12-fold, respectively, compared to pre-pandemic years. All patients had impaired kidney function with a median eGFR of 31.9 ml/min/1.73m² at diagnosis. Kidney biopsies showed lesions of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis and 25% of patients had fibrosis. No patient had concomitant acute COVID-19. All 16 children tested had high anti-N IgG titers and one had anti-S IgGs. Next-generation sequencing failed to detect any infectious agents in kidney biopsies. However, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected by PCR in two kidney samples supporting a potential direct link between SARS-CoV-2 and aTIN/TINUs.ConclusionsWe describe a novel form of post-acute COVID-19 syndrome in children, unique in its exclusive kidney and eye involvement, and its distinctive anti-SARS-CoV-2 N+/S-serological profile. Our results support a causal association linking SARS-CoV-2 infection to this newly-reported burst of renal/eye inflammation.

Abstract

International audience; In this article, we introduce a method to exploit ultra-high dielectrophoresis (UHF-DEP) with a microfluidic radio frequency device able to sort biological cells by deflecting the trajectory of the targeted population in a continuous flow. This study highlights the capability of a high frequency lab-on-chip implemented UHF-DEP cytometer to isolate cancer stem cells (CSCs). Actually, CSCs sorting by an efficient, fast and low-cost method remains an issue. Above 20 MHz, the intracellular dielectric properties of cells determine the dielectrophoretic behavior of cells and is then very sensitive to the cell cytoplasm content. The proposed cell sorting principle exploits the combination of the fluidic drag and the repulsive dielectrophoretic forces in order to isolate CSCs hidden within differentiated cancer cells. We previously demonstrated the UHF-DEP behavior of cells, as a new type of electromagnetic biomarkers to discriminate cancer stem cells among a tumor population from colorectal cancer cell line.

Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with fault detection and isolation (FDI) in complex embedded wired communication networks. The considered faults are soft faults which do not prevent the communication, but may evolve into hard faults, i.e. short or open circuit. A novel FDI method based on power line communication (PLC) transmission systems is proposed. In these PLC systems, the transmission coefficients between the source and each receiver are estimated for communication purposes using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Health indicators and residuals are computed by comparing the online estimated transmission coefficients with the reference coefficients. A methodology for dealing with complex networks, such as bus networks, is proposed. It is based on the decomposition of the network into several Y-shaped sub-networks. Each of these sub-networks is monitored to detect the presence of a fault. The FDI method is first validated using real data extracted from a Y-shaped network test bench. Then, the proposed approach is validated on a more complex network using realistic simulated data.

Cet ouvrage s’intéresse à la question de la désistance dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire. Abstract

We refer by threshold Ornstein-Uhlenbeck to a continuous-time threshold autoregressive process. It follows the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamics when above or below a fixed level, yet at this level (threshold) its coefficients can be discontinuous. We discuss (quasi)-maximum likelihood estimation of the drift parameters, both assuming continuous and discrete time observations. In the ergodic case, we derive consistency and speed of convergence of these estimators in long time and high frequency. Based on these results, we develop a test for the presence of a threshold in the dynamics. Finally, we apply these statistical tools to short-term US interest rates modeling.

Abstract

International audience; Cellular materials, in particular metal or polymer foams and beam lattices, are characterized by a complex architecture where the material is concentrated in slender struts. This study is concerned with the construction of numerically efficient samplespecific digital twin for the analysis and characterization of the mechanical behavior of such meta-materials. A method to build an explicit, light, and analysis-suitable isogeometric beam model directly from digital images is proposed. More precisely, as a main contribution, the Virtual Image Correlation method is extended to the case of multiple interconnected beams with varying cross-sections. Special care is also given to the initialization for better efficiency and robustness. Synthetic and real examples of increasing complexity, i.e. curved beams, lattices, and foams, are presented to account for the performance of the developed workflow from digital images to an isogeometric twin for mechanical modelling and simulation.

Abstract

International audience; The Central English Channel troughs correspond to elongated incisions up to 250 m-deep, at several locations at the bottom of this sea corridor. Depending on their location, they are usually interpreted as part of the submerged quaternary paleovalley network or as resulting from megaflood events. Shedding light on these features, their age, and the processes underlying their development is key for understanding their significance in terms of event geology. The interpretation of a dense grid of high-resolution marine seismic data acquired in the Bay of Seine area reveals that the extensive Quaternary paleovalley and trough network commonly as associated to the "Channel River" system is actually subdivided into at least two superimposed and unrelated incised networks. The overlying network corresponds to fluvial incisions developing during low sea-level conditions of Pleistocene time and connects to the present day fluvial network. The underlying network corresponds to the troughs and appears as a complex, deeper, relatively discontinuous and isolated network. This older network shows unexpected local incision depth up to c.350-400 m-deep and complex sedimentary infill involving several sedimentary processes and environments from fluvial to tidal and shallow-marine. We discuss these observations and their implications for understanding the origin, age and development of the troughs all over the English Channel, from the Dangeard Troughs in the Dover Strait to the Hurd Deep at the western end. We also raise questions about the significance of these large incised features in terms of source-to-sink system of northwestern Europe.

Abstract

This chapter notes the steady growth of children in residential care in France over the past two decades, which the authors suggest is due to a degraded social environment and an increase in unaccompanied minors. Important issues in the country include prevention of institutional abuse and avoiding sibling separation. In a novel program, children remain in the parental home but under the supervision of a team of professionals. Other innovations in some localities include residential care units where parents can share time and everyday activities over a weekend with children. Over the last two decades, residential placements have represented a decreasing share of out-of-home care. Parental autonomy is a focus throughout the placement experience. Residential care occurs in a variety of settings, including very small units. The chapter concludes with the matrix used throughout the book, which provides information about the current policy context, key trends and initiatives, characteristics of children and youth served, preparation of residential care personnel, promising programmatic innovations, and present strengths and challenges.

Abstract

The early environmental history of Mars is encoded in the planet's record of sedimentary rocks. Since 2012, the Curiosity rover has been ascending Mount Sharp, Gale crater's central mound, making detailed observations of sedimentary strata exposed there. The primary depositional setting represented by the rocks examined thus far has been a perennial lake, represented by the mudstones and sandstone lenses of the Murray formation. Here, we report on the sedimentology of outcrops examined in the Carolyn Shoemaker formation, which sits stratigraphically above the Murray formation. We interpret strata exposed in the Glasgow and Mercou members of the Carolyn Shoemaker formation to represent river bars in ancient alluvial and shoreline settings based on sedimentary structures, stratal geometries measured from photogrammetric data, and erosional morphology. The transition from a lacustrine to a fluvial depositional setting records the aggradation and progradation of coastal rivers into what was previously the extent of the Gale lake system. This may have occurred due to the shrinking of the lake over time due to climate-driven changes in the basin water balance, or local three-dimensionality in shoreline evolution, such as the formation of a new sedimentary lobe following a channel switch.

Abstract

Morphological alterations of the endosomal compartment have been widely described in post-mortem brains from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients and subjects with Down syndrome (DS) who are at high risk for AD. Immunostaining with antibodies against endosomal markers such as Early Endosome Antigen 1 (EEA1) revealed increased size of EEA1-positive puncta. In DS, peripheral cells such as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and fibroblasts, share similar phenotype even in the absence of AD. We previously found that PBMCs from AD patients have larger EEA1-positive puncta, correlating with brain amyloid load. Here we analysed the endosomal compartment of fibroblasts from a very well characterised cohort of AD patients (IMABio3) who underwent thorough clinical, imaging and biomarkers assessments. Twenty-one subjects were included (7 AD with mild cognitive impairment (AD-MCI), 7 AD with dementia (AD-D) and 7 controls) who had amyloid-PET at baseline (PiB) and neuropsychological tests at baseline and close to skin biopsy. Fibroblasts isolated from skin biopsies were immunostained with anti-EEA1 antibody and imaged using a spinning disk microscope. Endosomal compartment ultrastructure was also analysed by electron microscopy. All fibroblast lines were genotyped and their AD risk factors identified. Our results show a trend to an increased EEA1-positive puncta volume in fibroblasts from AD-D as compared to controls (p.adj = 0.12) and reveal enhanced endosome area in fibroblasts from AD-MCI and AD-AD versus controls. Larger puncta size correlated with PiB retention in different brain areas and with worse cognitive scores at the time of biopsy as well as faster decline from baseline to the time of biopsy. Finally, we identified three genetic risk factors for AD (ABCA1, COX7C and MYO15A) that were associated with larger EEA1 puncta volume. In conclusion, the endosomal compartment in fibroblasts could be used as cellular peripheral biomarker for both amyloid deposition and cognitive decline in AD patients.
