We study the geometry of the Hitchin fibration for $\mathcal{L}$-valued $G$-Higgs bundles over a smooth projective curve of genus $g$, where $G$ is a reductive group and $\mathcal{L}$ is a suitably positive line bundle. We show that the Hitchin fibration admits the structure of a weak Abelian fibration. In the case when the line bundle $\mathcal{L}$ is a twist of the canonical bundle of the curve by a (possibly empty) reduced effective divisor, we prove a cohomological bound and $\delta$-regularity of the weak Abelian fibration., Comment: 98 pages, comments are welcome

The RES-NOVA project is an experimental initiative aimed at detecting neutrinos from the next galactic supernova using PbWO$_{4}$ cryogenic detectors, operated at low temperatures in a low-background environment. By utilizing archaeological lead (Pb) as the target material, RES-NOVA leverages its high radiopurity, large nuclear mass, and the natural abundance of $^{207}$Pb, making it well-suited for exploring both spin-independent and spin-dependent Dark Matter (DM) interactions via nuclear scattering. This work presents a background model developed for the RES-NOVA technology demonstrator and evaluates its implications for Dark Matter detection. Detailed calculations of nuclear matrix elements, combined with the unique properties of archaeological Pb, demonstrate RES-NOVA's potential as a complementary tool to existing direct detection experiments for studying Dark Matter interactions. The experiment will conduct DM searches over a broad mass range spanning 4 orders of magnitude, from sub-GeV/$c^2$ to TeV/$c^2$. In the most optimistic scenario, RES-NOVA is expected to probe DM-nucleon cross-sections down to 1$\times 10^{-43}$ cm$^2$ and 2$\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for candidates with masses of 2 GeV/$c^2$ and 20 GeV/$c^2$, respectively., Comment: updated limit calculation

For a curve C and a reductive group G in prime characteristic, we relate the de Rham moduli of logarithmic G-connections on C to the Dolbeault moduli of logarithmic G-Higgs bundles on the Frobenius twist of C. We name this result the Log-p-NAHT. It is a logarithmic version of Chen-Zhu's characteristic p Non Abelian Hodge Theorem (p-NAHT). In contrast to the no pole case, the two moduli stacks in the log case are not isomorphic etale locally over the Hitchin base. Instead, they differ by an Artin-Schreier type Galois cover of the base. In contrast to the case over the complex numbers, where some parabolic/parahoric data are needed to specify the boundary behavior of the tame harmonic metrics, no parabolic/parahoric data are needed in Log-p-NAHT. We also establish a semistable version of the Log-p-NAHT, and deduce several geometric and cohomological consequences. In particular, when G=GL_r, the Log-p-NAHT induces an embedding of the intersection cohomology of the degree d Dolbeault moduli to that of the degree pd de Rham moduli, and the embedding is an isomorphism when r is coprime to d and p>r.

Since the first realization of borophene on Ag(111), two-dimensional (2D) boron nanomaterials have attracted significant interest due to their polymorphic diversity and potential for hosting solid-state quantum phenomena. Here, we use atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and field-emission resonance (FER) spectroscopy to elucidate the structure and properties of atomically thin boron phases grown on Cu(111). Specifically, FER spectroscopy reveals unique charge transfer and electronic states compared to the distinct borophene phases observed on silver, suggesting that the deposition of boron on copper can result in strong covalent bonding characteristic of a 2D copper boride. This conclusion is reinforced by detailed STM characterization of line defects that are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations for atomically thin Cu8B14. This evidence for 2D copper boride is likely to motivate future synthetic efforts aimed at expanding the relatively unexplored family of atomically thin metal boride materials., Comment: 19 pages including supplementary information, 4 main figures

Traditional thermoelectric materials rely on low thermal conductivity to enhance their efficiency but suffer from inherently limited power factors. Novel pathways to optimize electronic transport are thus crucial. Here, we achieve ultrahigh power factors in Ni$_3$Ge through a new materials design principle. When overlapping flat and dispersive bands are engineered to the Fermi level, charge carriers can undergo intense interband scattering, yielding an energy filtering effect similar to what has long been predicted in certain nanostructured materials. Via a multi-step DFT-based screening method developed herein, we discover a new family of L1$_2$-ordered binary compounds with ultrahigh power factors up to 11 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ near room temperature, which are driven by an intrinsic phonon-mediated energy filtering mechanism. Our comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of these new intriguing materials paves the way for understanding and designing high-performance scattering-tuned metallic thermoelectrics.

Super-Resolution Microscopy (SRM) is emerging as a powerful and innovative tool for imaging, characterizing, and understanding the structure of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs). By addressing the need for single-particle analysis with the high resolution required to study the composition and organization of these nanoparticles, SRM provides unique insights into EV biology. However, its application is accompanied by significant challenges, ranging from experimental setup to data analysis. This review outlines the fundamentals of SRM and its position within the broader field of EV research. We then explore its applications in evaluating (i) the morphological structure of EVs, (ii) their molecular composition, and (iii) their roles in biological systems. By offering practical guidance and an overview of critical parameters for standardization, this review aims at providing researchers with the tools and insights necessary to effectively apply SRM to EV investigation.

The Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is the first in-ice radio array in the northern hemisphere for the detection of ultra-high energy neutrinos via the coherent radio emission from neutrino-induced particle cascades within the ice. The array is currently in phased construction near Summit Station on the Greenland ice sheet, with 7~stations deployed during the first two boreal summer field seasons of 2021 and 2022. In this paper, we describe the installation and system design of these initial RNO-G stations, and discuss the performance of the array as of summer 2024.

Renal Cell Carcinoma is typically asymptomatic at the early stages for many patients. This leads to a late diagnosis of the tumor, where the curability likelihood is lower, and makes the mortality rate of Renal Cell Carcinoma high, with respect to its incidence rate. To increase the survival chance, a fast and correct categorization of the tumor subtype is paramount. Nowadays, computerized methods, based on artificial intelligence, represent an interesting opportunity to improve the productivity and the objectivity of the microscopy-based Renal Cell Carcinoma diagnosis. Nonetheless, much of their exploitation is hampered by the paucity of annotated dataset, essential for a proficient training of supervised machine learning technologies. This study sets out to investigate a novel self supervised training strategy for machine learning diagnostic tools, based on the multi-resolution nature of the histological samples. We aim at reducing the need of annotated dataset, without significantly reducing the accuracy of the tool. We demonstrate the classification capability of our tool on a whole slide imaging dataset for Renal Cancer subtyping, and we compare our solution with several state-of-the-art classification counterparts.

Charge density wave (CDW) orders in YNiC2 are studied by means of combined experimental and computational techniques. On the experimental side, single crystals grown by the floating-zone method were examined by means of X-ray diffraction, as well as transport and thermal techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations founded on the experimentally determined parent and CDW-modified crystal structures provide details of electronic and phononic structures as well as electron-phonon coupling and resolve changes inflicted upon entering the different CDW phases. Thereby, contrasting effects of subsequently emerging CDW states characterized by incommensurate q_{1ic} and commensurate q_{2c} modulation vectors are revealed. The former state, on-setting below T_{1ic}~ 305 K, weakly modifies the electronic structure by opening an almost isotropic gap on a minor part of the Fermi surface (FS). The latter phase, which takes over below T_{2c}~ 272 K has a more pronounced impact on physical properties via a decomposition of larger parts of the FS. These dissimilar behaviors are directly reflected in the electronic transport anisotropy, which is significantly weakened in the q_{2c}-type CDW state. As revealed by our DFT studies, CDW phases are very close in energy and their origin is directly related to the anisotropy of electron-phonon coupling, which is linked to a specific orbital character of related FS sheets. Specific heat and thermal expansion studies reveal a nearly reversible first-order phase transition at around T_{2c}~ 272 K, where both CDW phases co-exist within a T-interval of about 10 K., Comment: Manuscript with 15 pages and 11 figures; Supplemental Material with 10 pages and 9 figures

The ice giant planets Uranus and Neptune are assumed to contain large amounts of planetary ices such as water, methane, and ammonia. The properties of mixtures of such ices at the extreme pressures and temperatures of planetary interiors are not yet well understood. Ab initio computer simulations predicted that a number of ices exhibit a hydrogen superionic state and a doubly superionic state [DOI: 10.1038/s41467-023-42958-0]. Since the latter state has not yet been generated with experiments, we outline here two possible pathways for reaching and detecting such a state with dynamic compression experiments. We suggest X-ray diffraction as the principal tool for detecting when the material becomes doubly superionic and the sublattice of one of the heavy nuclei melts. That would require a temperature of $\sim$3500 K and pressures greater than $\sim$200 GPa for H$_3$NO$_4$, which we use as an example material here. Such conditions can be reached with experiments that employ an initial shock that is followed by a ramp compression wave. Here we present several use cases for using Generative AI (Gen AI) to improve systems engineering and cognitive knowledge management related to the future of astronomy from a culmination of working meetings and presentations as part of the Gen AI Task Group for the NASA Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) Science and Technology Architecture Review Team (START) AI/ML Working Group. Collectively, our group mission statement is "Where is the Human-in-the-loop as Gen AI systems become more powerful and autonomous?" with an emphasis on the ethical applications of Gen AI, guided by using these systems to remove drudgery from human work while simultaneously increasing opportunities for humans to experience more collective creativity and innovation. The HWO mission stands to benefit dramatically from generative models for different data types including text, time series/spectra, and image data. These cover a wide range of applications in science and engineering for HWO, including: mission development acceleration, data analysis and interpretation, enhancing imaging capabilities, anomaly detection, predictive modeling and simulation, data augmentation for machine learning, instrument calibration and optimization, public engagement and education, and assisting in mission planning. As an example, through sensitivity analysis of simulated exoplanet population science data sets of various generative model complexity, we can reverse engineer the measurement uncertainty requirements for HWO instruments to produce data that can constrain population models and thus inform HWO design requirements. This approach to HWO design is one example of a strategy that can ensure that HWO remains AI-ready. Through presenting herein a combination of visionary ideas balanced with grounded validated use case examples, we aim to support the development of a long-term strategy to keep HWO AI-ready as it moves forward., Comment: Lack of guidelines for submitting work that came out of the HWO START TAG working groups.

We present a novel method for predicting binary phase diagrams through the automatic construction of a minimal basis set of representative templates. The core assumption is that any materials space can be divided into a small number of regions with similar chemical tendencies and bonding properties, and that a minimal set of templates can efficiently represent the key chemical trends across the different regions. By combining data-driven techniques with ab-initio crystal structure prediction, we can efficiently partition the materials space and construct templates reflecting variations in chemical behavior. Preliminary results demonstrate that our method predicts binary convex hulls with accuracy comparable to resource-intensive EA searches, while achieving a significant reduction in computational time (by a factor of 25). The method can be extended to ternary and multinary systems, enabling efficient high-throughput exploration and mapping of complex material spaces. Detecting complex anomalies on massive amounts of data is a crucial task in Industry 4.0, best addressed by deep learning. However, available solutions are computationally demanding, requiring cloud architectures prone to latency and bandwidth issues. This work presents VARADE, a novel solution implementing a light autoregressive framework based on variational inference, which is best suited for real-time execution on the edge. The proposed approach was validated on a robotic arm, part of a pilot production line, and compared with several state-of-the-art algorithms, obtaining the best trade-off between anomaly detection accuracy, power consumption and inference frequency on two different edge platforms.

The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. Conflicting theoretical scenarios for infinite-layer nickelate superconductors have been hotly debated, particularly regarding whether {only} a single Ni-3$d_{x^2-y^2}$ band is relevant at low energies besides electron pockets or whether multi-orbital physics including Ni-3$d_{z^2}$ is instead essential. The first scenario has emerged from density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) calculations. Comparing the previous DFT+DMFT spectra to recent angular-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, we find excellent agreement for both the Fermi surface and the strongly renormalized quasi-particle bands, supporting the first scenario. Our key findings further suggest that the "waterfalls" observed in ARPES might emerge from the quasi-particle--to--Hubbard-band crossover, and that additional spectral weight close to the $A$-pocket {likely} originates from the Ni-3$d_{xy}$ orbital., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we employ a Bayesian approach to assess the reliability of a critical component in the Mars Sample Return program, focusing on the Earth Entry System's risk of containment not assured upon reentry. Our study uses Gaussian Process modeling under a Bayesian regime to analyze the Earth Entry System's resilience against operational stress. This Bayesian framework allows for a detailed probabilistic evaluation of the risk of containment not assured, indicating the feasibility of meeting the mission's stringent safety goal of 0.999999 probability of success. The findings underscore the effectiveness of Bayesian methods for complex uncertainty quantification analyses of computer simulations, providing valuable insights for computational reliability analysis in a risk-averse setting.

Hydrogen hydrates present a rich phase diagram influenced by both pressure and temperature, with the so-called C$_2$ phase emerging prominently above 2.5 GPa. In this phase, hydrogen molecules are densely packed within a cubic ice-like lattice and the interaction with the surrounding water molecules profoundly affects their quantum rotational dynamics. Herein, we delve into this intricate interplay by directly solving the Schr\"{o}dinger's equation for a quantum H$_2$ rotor in the C$_2$ crystal field at finite temperature, generated through Density Functional Theory. Our calculations reveal a giant energy splitting relative to the magnetic quantum number of $\pm$3.2 meV for $l=1$. Employing inelastic neutron scattering, we experimentally measure the energy levels of H$_2$ within the C$_2$ phase at 6.0 and 3.4 GPa and low temperatures, finding remarkable agreement with our theoretical predictions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of hydrogen--water interactions in dictating the rotational behavior of the hydrogen molecules within the C$_2$ phase and indicate heightened induced-dipole interactions compared to other hydrogen hydrates., Comment: 4 Figures

Enforcing security requirements in networked information systems relies on security controls to mitigate the risks from increasingly dangerous threats. Configuring security controls is challenging; even nowadays, administrators must perform it without adequate tool support. Hence, this process is plagued by errors that translate to insecure postures, security incidents, and a lack of promptness in answering threats. This paper presents the Security Capability Model (SCM), a formal model that abstracts the features that security controls offer for enforcing security policies, which includes an Information Model that depicts the basic concepts related to rules (i.e., conditions, actions, events) and policies (i.e., conditions' evaluation, resolution strategies, default actions), and a Data Model that covers the capabilities needed to describe different types of filtering and channel protection controls. Following state-of-the-art design patterns, the model allows for generating abstract versions of the security controls' languages and a model-driven approach for translating abstract policies into device-specific configuration settings. By validating its effectiveness in real-world scenarios, we show that SCM enables the automation of different and complex security tasks, i.e., accurate and granular security control comparison, policy refinement, and incident response. Lastly, we present opportunities for extensions and integration with other frameworks and models.

The identification of patterns in space, time, and magnitude, which could potentially encode the subsequent earthquake magnitude, represents a significant challenge in earthquake forecasting. A pivotal aspect of this endeavor involves the search for correlations between earthquake magnitudes, a task greatly hindered by the incompleteness of instrumental catalogs. A novel strategy to address this challenge is provided by the groundbreaking observation by Van der Elst (Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 2021), that positive magnitude differences, under certain conditions, remain unaffected by incompleteness. In this letter we adopt this strategy which provides a clear and unambiguous proof regarding the existence of correlations between subsequent positive magnitude differences. Our results are consistent with a time-dependent b-value in the Gutenberg-Richter law, significantly enhancing existing models for seismic forecasting.

The Radio Neutrino Observatory - Greenland (RNO-G) seeks discovery of ultra-high energy neutrinos from the cosmos through their interactions in ice. The science program extends beyond particle astrophysics to include radioglaciology and, as we show herein, solar observations, as well. Currently seven of 35 planned radio-receiver stations (24 antennas/station) are operational. These stations are sensitive to impulsive radio signals with frequencies between 80 and 700 MHz and feature a neutrino trigger threshold for recording data close to the thermal floor. RNO-G can also trigger on elevated signals from the Sun, resulting in nanosecond resolution time-domain flare data; such temporal resolution is significantly shorter than from most dedicated solar observatories. In addition to possible RNO-G solar flare polarization measurements, the Sun also represents an extremely useful above-surface calibration source. Using RNO-G data recorded during the summers of 2022 and 2023, we find signal excesses during solar flares reported by the solar-observing Callisto network and also in coincidence with $\sim$2/3 of the brightest excesses recorded by the SWAVES satellite. These observed flares are characterized by significant time-domain impulsivity. Using the known position of the Sun, the flare sample is used to calibrate the RNO-G absolute pointing on the radio signal arrival direction to sub-degree resolution. We thus establish the Sun as a regularly observed astronomical calibration source to provide the accurate absolute pointing required for neutrino astronomy.

This paper presents the design of an 800 V 11 kVA three-level three-phase active neutral point clamped inverter, utilizing 650 V gallium nitride enhancement-mode high-electron-mobility transistors, to evaluate its feasibility in electric traction systems. The modular approach of the presented power converter design is detailed discussed and the different printed circuit boards composing the power converter are presented, together with critical design issues. Thermoelectric (TE) materials are useful for applications such as waste heat harvesting or efficient and targeted cooling. While various strategies towards superior thermoelectrics through a reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity have been developed, a path to enhance the power factor is pressing. Here, we report large power factors up to 5 mW m$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$ at room temperature in the kagome metal Ni$_3$In$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. This system is predicted to feature almost dispersionless flat bands in conjunction with highly dispersive Dirac-like bands in its electronic structure around the Fermi energy $E_\text{F}$ [L. Ye et al., Nature Physics 1-5 (2024)]. Within this study, we experimentally and theoretically showcase that tuning this flat band precisely below $E_\text{F}$ by chemical doping $x$ boosts the Seebeck coefficient and power factor, as highly mobile charge carriers scatter into the flat-band states. Our work demonstrates the prospect of engineering extremely flat and highly dispersive bands towards the Fermi energy in kagome metals and introduces topological flat bands as a novel tuning knob for thermoelectrics.

We present the first $ab$-$initio$ study of superconductivity in NbTi, the workhorse for many applications. Despite its apparent simplicity, NbTi turns out to be a major challenge for computational superconductivity. In fact, anharmonic effects are crucial to obtain dynamically stable phonons for the ordered bcc phase, unstable at the harmonic level, and beyond-Morel Anderson effects in the Coulomb interaction reduce the Tc by more than 20%. Lattice disorder causes an additional large discrepancy in $T_c$ compared to experiment. A generalized Bose-Hubbard model in a two-mode approximation is applied to study the rotational dynamics of a direct-current atomtronic quantum interference device. Modified values of on-site interaction and pair-tunneling parameters of the Hamiltonian, derived from the small-oscillation periods of the Josephson modes, are shown to provide an excellent agreement to the Gross-Pitaevskii simulation results for the whole rotational frequency range, reaching also the critical values of imbalance and current. This amounts to a full validation of the semiclassical approximation of the modified Hamiltonian, whose quantization is employed to investigate the quantum features of the stationary states. Focusing on the frequency interval where the potential energy presents two minima, it is shown that the central frequency, at which such minima are symmetric, yields an atom number parity-protected qubit with a maximum entanglement of both persistent-current states, similar to those of superconducting circuits threaded by a half-quantum of applied flux. Such a parity protection scheme survives within a small interval around the central frequency, which sets the minimum rotational frequency precision that should be required to implement the qubit. It is found that such a maximum admissible error in the frequency determination turns out to be inversely proportional to the qubit quality factor that measures the gap between the qubit energy levels and the following levels. It is shown that the chemical potential or condensate particle number could be employed as suitable control parameters to achieve the best trade-off between such qubit characteristics.

This paper introduces the HEX (High-pressure Elemental Xstals) database, a complete database of the ground-state crystal structures of the first 57 elements of the periodic table, from H to La, at 0, 100, 200 and 300 GPa. HEX aims to provide a unified reference for high-pressure research, by compiling all available experimental information on elements at high pressure, and complementing it with the results of accurate evolutionary crystal structure prediction runs based on Density Functional Theory. Besides offering a much-needed reference, our work also serves as a benchmark of the accuracy of current ab-initio methods for crystal structure prediction. We find that, in 98 % of the cases in which experimental information is available, ab-initio crystal structure prediction yields structures which either coincide or are degenerate in enthalpy to within 300 K with experimental ones. We describe a testbed to characterize the optical response of compact superconducting on-chip spectrometers in development for the Experiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) mission. EXCLAIM is a balloonborne far-infrared experiment to probe the CO and CII emission lines in galaxies from redshift 3.5 to the present. The spectrometer, called u-Spec, comprises a diffraction grating on a silicon chip coupled to kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) read out via a single microwave feedline. We use a prototype spectrometer for EXCLAIM to demonstrate our ability to characterize the spectrometers spectral response using a photomixer source. We utilize an on-chip reference detector to normalize relative to spectral structure from the off-chip optics and a silicon etalon to calibrate the absolute frequency.

In the last years, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), especially at the two-dimensional (2D) limit, gained a large interest due to their unique optical and electronic properties. Among them, MoS2 received great attention from the scientific community due to its versatility, workability, and applicability in a large number of fields such as electronics, optoelectronics and electrocatalysis. To open the possibility of 2D-MoS2 exploitation, its synthesis over large macroscopic areas using cost-effective methods is fundamental. In this study, we report a method for the synthesis of large-area (~ cm2) few-layers MoS2 via liquid precursor CVD (L-CVD), where the Mo precursor (i.e. ammonium heptamolybdate AHM) is provided via a solution that is spin-coated over the substrate. Given the capability of organic and inorganic molecules, such as alkaline salts, to enhance MoS2 growth, we investigated the action of different inorganic salts as seed promoters. In particular, by using visible Raman spectroscopy, we focused on the effect of Na(OH), KCl, KI, and Li(OH) on the thickness, morphology, uniformity and degree of coverage of the grown MoS2. We optimized the process tuning parameters such as the volume of spin-coated solution, the growth temperature, and the seed promoter concentration, to synthesise the lowest possible thickness which resulted to be 2 layers (2L) of the highest quality. We witnessed that the addition of an inorganic seed promoter in the solution improves the extension of the grown MoS2 promoting lateral growth front, and therefore the degree of coverage. From this study, we conclude that, amongst the investigated seed promoters, K-based salts proved to grant the growth of high-quality two-layer MoS2 with optimal and uniform coverage of the SiO2/Si substrate surface.
