We have obtained near-infrared (0.80–2.45  |$\, \mu$| m) spectra of the recurrent nova LMCN 1968-12a on two occasions during its 2024 August eruption. This is the first near-infrared spectroscopy of an extragalactic nova. The initial spectrum, on day 8.48, caught the nova in the coronal phase, with the [Si  x ] 1.43  |$\, \mu$| m line being extremely strong. This line had a luminosity of |$\sim 95$|   |$\rm L_\odot$|⁠ , and is clearly a very powerful coolant. Its presence, together with the absence of [Si  ix ] 1.56 |$\, \mu$| m, implies a coronal temperature |$\gtrsim 3\times 10^6$|  K, possibly amongst the highest recorded coronal temperature in a nova eruption. With the exception of the [Si  x ] line, the near-infrared spectra are remarkable for being devoid of metal lines. We suggest that this is due, in part, to the exceptionally high temperature of the coronal gas, causing ions, whose emission lines would normally appear in the near-infrared spectrum, to be collisionally ionized to higher stages. We present volume-limited samples of cataclysmic variables (CVs) and AM CVn binaries jointly selected from SRG/eROSITA eRASS1 and Gaia DR3 using an X-ray + optical color–color diagram (the "X-ray Main Sequence"). This tool identifies all CV subtypes, including magnetic and low-accretion rate systems, in contrast to most previous surveys. We find 23 CVs, 3 of which are AM CVns, out to 150 pc in the Western Galactic Hemisphere. Our 150 pc sample is spectroscopically verified and complete down to L X = 1.3 × 1029 erg s−1 in the 0.2–2.3 keV band, and we also present CV candidates out to 300 pc and 1000 pc. We discovered two previously unknown systems in our 150 pc sample: the third nearest AM CVn and a magnetic period bouncer. We find the mean L X of CVs to be 〈 L X〉 ≈ 4.6 × 1030 erg s−1, in contrast to previous surveys which yielded 〈 L X〉 ∼ 1031−1032 erg s−1. We construct X-ray luminosity functions that, for the first time, flatten out at L X ∼ 1030 erg s−1. We infer average number, mass, and luminosity densities of ρ N,CV = (3.7 ± 0.7) × 10−6pc−3, ρ M = (5.0 ± 1.0) × 1 0 − 5 M ⊙ − 1 , and ρ L X = (2.3 ± 0.4) × 1 0 26 erg s − 1 M ⊙ − 1 , respectively, in the solar neighborhood. Our uniform selection method also allows us to place meaningful estimates on the space density of AM CVns, ρ N,AM CVn = (5.5 ± 3.7) × 10−7 pc−3. Magnetic CVs and period bouncers make up 35% and 25% of our sample, respectively. This work, through a novel discovery technique, shows that the observed number densities of CVs and AM CVns, as well as the fraction of period bouncers, are still in tension with population synthesis estimates. Novalike variables are a subgroup of cataclysmic variables (CVs) that—unlike dwarf novae—do not exhibit strong brightenings in their long-term light curves. Variations over timescales of weeks, months, or years are mostly restricted to irregular low-amplitude modulations. However, some of them occasionally suffer from so-called stunted outbursts, that is, small-scale brightenings of less than a magnitude lasting for a couple of days to weeks. There is no consensus about the physical mechanisms behind these outbursts. Here I discuss the common properties of a group of novalike variables (which I call AH Pictoris (AH Pic) stars after its most prominent member) that exhibit a continuous train of successive stunted outbursts over their entire observational history, or at least for several years. The outburst amplitudes are stable in a given system, always ranging between 0.5 and 1 mag in the visual band. The outburst intervals, at an overall range between 12 and 30 days, and the outburst profiles can gradually evolve, but no sudden changes are observed. On shorter timescales the orbital waveforms are not only surprisingly similar, but also evolve in the same way over the outburst cycle. All AH Pic stars have absolute visual magnitudes in the overlap region between the absolute magnitudes of all novalike variables and of quiescent dwarf novae above the CV period gap. So far, I identified seven novalike variables with the consistent photometric behavior that may be termed the AH Pic syndrome. Several more systems may be related objects. The discrepancies between observations and theoretical predictions of cataclysmic variables (CVs) suggest that there exists unknown angular-momentum-loss mechanism(s) besides magnetic braking and gravitational radiation. Mass loss due to nova eruptions belongs to the most likely candidates. While standard theory assumes that mass is lost in the form of radiation-driven, optically thick wind (fast wind), recent numerical simulations indicate that most of the mass loss is initiated and shaped by binary interaction. We explore the effect of this binary-driven mass loss (BDML) on the CV evolutions assuming a major fraction of the lost mass leaves the system from the outer Lagrangian point. Different from the traditional continuous wind picture, we consider the mass loss process to be instantaneous because the duration of nova eruptions is much shorter than the binary evolutionary timescale. Our detailed binary evolution calculations reveal the following results. (1) BDML seems able to provide extra angular momentum loss below the period gap. The mass transfer rates at a given orbital period occupy a large range, in agreement with the observed secular mass transfer rate distribution in CVs. (2) The enhanced mass transfer rates do not lead to a runaway mass transfer process and allow the white dwarfs to grow mass ≲0.1 M ☉. (3) BDML can cause both positive and negative variations in the orbital period induced by nova eruptions, in line with observations, and can potentially explain the properties of some peculiar supersoft X-ray sources likely CAL 87, 1E 0035.4−7230, and RX J0537.7−7034. Context. Lithium plays a crucial role in probing stellar physics, stellar and primordial nucleosynthesis, and the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. Stars are considered to be the main source of Li, yet the identity of its primary stellar producer has long been a matter of debate. Aims. In light of recent theoretical and observational results, we investigate in this study the role of two candidate sources of Li enrichment in the Milky Way, namely asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and, in particular, novae. Methods. We utilised a one-zone Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) model to assess the viability of AGB stars and novae as stellar sources of Li. We used recent theoretical Li yields for AGB stars, while for novae we adopted observationally inferred Li yields and recently derived delay time distributions (DTDs). Subsequently, we extended our analysis by using a multi-zone model with radial migration to investigate spatial variations in the evolution of Li across the Milky Way disc and compared the results with observational data for field stars and open clusters. Results. Our analysis shows that AGB stars clearly fail to reproduce the meteoritic Li abundance. In contrast, novae appear as promising candidates within the adopted framework, allowing us to quantify the contribution of each Li source at the Sun's formation and today. Our multi-zone model reveals the role of the differences in the DTDs of Type Ia supernovae and novae in shaping the evolution of Li in the various galactic zones. Context. Magnetic wind braking drives the spin-down of low-mass stars and the evolution of most interacting binary stars. A magnetic braking prescription that was claimed to reproduce both the period distribution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) and the evolution of the rotation rates of low-mass stars is based on a relation between the angular momentum loss rate and magnetic field complexity. Aims. The magnetic braking model based on field complexity has been claimed to predict a detached phase that could explain the observed period gap in the period distribution of CVs but has never been tested in detailed models of CV evolution. Here we fill this gap. Methods. We incorporated the suggested magnetic braking law in MESA and simulated the evolution of CVs for different initial stellar masses and initial orbital periods. Results. We find that the prescription for magnetic braking based on field complexity fails to reproduce observations of CVs. The predicted secondary star radii are smaller than measured, and an extended detached phase that is required to explain the observed period gap (a dearth of non-magnetic CVs with periods between ∼2 and ∼3 hours) is not predicted. Conclusions. Proposed magnetic braking prescriptions based on a relation between the angular momentum loss rate and field complexity are too weak to reproduce the bloating of donor stars in CVs derived from observations and, in contrast to previous claims, do not provide an explanation for the observed period gap. The suggested steep decrease in the angular momentum loss rate does not lead to detachment. Stronger magnetic braking prescriptions and a discontinuity at the fully convective boundary are needed to explain the evolution of close binary stars that contain compact objects. Aims. Cataclysmic variables (CVs) are compact binary systems in which a white dwarf accretes matter from a Roche-lobe-filling companion star. For this study we searched for new CVs in the Milky Way in the Chandra Source Catalog v2.0, cross-matched with Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3). Methods. We identified new CV candidates by combining X-ray and optical data in a color-color diagram called the X-ray main sequence. We used two different cuts in this diagram to compile pure and optically variable samples of CV candidates. We undertook optical spectroscopic follow-up observations with the Keck and Palomar Observatories to confirm the nature of these sources. Results. We assembled a sample of 25 887 Galactic X-ray sources and found 14 new CV candidates. Seven objects show X-ray and/or optical variability. All sources show X-ray luminosity in the 1029 − 1032 erg s−1 range, and their X-ray spectra can be approximated by a power-law model with photon indices in the Γ ∼ 1 − 3 range or an optically thin thermal emission model in the kT ∼ 1 − 70 keV range. We spectroscopically confirmed four CVs, discovering two new polars, one low accretion rate polar and a WZ Sge-like low accretion rate CV. X-ray and optical properties of the other nine objects suggest that they are also CVs (likely magnetic or dwarf novae), and one other object could be an eclipsing binary, but revealing their true nature requires further observations. Conclusions. These results show that a joint X-ray and optical analysis can be a powerful tool for finding new CVs in large X-ray and optical catalogs. We present an account of known cataclysmic variables (CVs) that were detected as X-ray sources in eROSITA X-ray surveys and have Gaia DR3 counterparts. We address standard CVs with main sequence donors and white dwarfs accreting via Roche-lobe overflow (RLOF) and related objects, the double degenerates (DDs), and the symbiotic stars (SySts). We discern between nonmagnetic (dwarf novae and nova-like objects) and magnetic CVs (polars and intermediate polars (IPs)). In the publically available eROSITA catalog from the recent DR1, typically 65% of known cataloged and classified CVs are detected. This fraction rises to over 90% if the stack of all eROSITA X-ray surveys (called S45 in this paper) is considered and the search volume is restricted to a radius of 500 pc. We examine the various classes of CVs in various diagnostic diagrams relating X-ray and optical properties (luminosity, absolute magnitude, color, X-ray spectral hardness, and optical variability) and establish their average class properties. We derive spectral properties for the 22 brightest polars and confirm an increase in the ratio of soft to hard X-rays with increasing magnetic field in the accretion region. We report three new soft IPs and present a spectral analysis of all soft IPs. Their blackbody temperatures agree well with published values. The DDs represent the bluest and faintest subcategory but reach the same identification fraction as the standard CVs. The SySts are the most distant systems; only 20 (13%) were detected as X-ray sources in S45, and 7 of those are first-time detections. We investigate their mean properties using an upper limit on the flux of the nondetected CVs. Their X-ray nondetection is indeed a distance effect. We used all properties combined to select candidate CVs for all-sky optical identification programs, with the ultimate aim being to compose large CV samples in order to better constrain the impact of magnetic fields on the evolution of CVs, to derive space densities and luminosity functions, and to quantify the contribution of white-dwarf accreting systems to the Galactic Ridge X-ray emission (GRXE). Context. Supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) have been proposed as one of the progenitors for Type Ia supernovae. However, the exact origin of the quasi-periodic variability in the optical light curve remains a mystery. Aims. In this work, our goal is to investigate the effect of the feedback of an evolved main-sequence companion star on X-ray irradiation and find whether periodic X-ray irradiation of the companion star could reproduce periodic mass transfer. Methods. Using the Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA) code, we modeled the evolutionary track of the companion star under the influence of supersoft X-ray irradiation, and we calculated the resulting mass transfer rate. Results. We find that the supersoft X-ray heating of the companion star can result in the expansion of the companion, causing it to greatly overflow its Roche lobe and thereby increasing the mass transfer rate. The periodic X-ray irradiation on the companion stars leads to periodic changes in the mass transfer rate. For a given companion star, higher irradiation efficiencies result in a higher mass transfer rate. Additionally, the mass transfer rate increases as the mass of the companion star decreases for a given irradiation efficiency. Conclusions. The companion star undergoing thermal timescale mass transfer is periodically irradiated by the X-rays from the WD, which can lead to periodic enhancement of the mass transfer rate. We present X-ray and optical observations of nova V407 Lup (Nova Lup 2016), previously well monitored in outburst, as it returned to quiescent accretion. The X-ray light curve in 2020 February revealed a clear flux modulation with a stable period of 564.64 |$\pm$| 0.64 s, corresponding to the period measured in outburst and attributed to the spin of a magnetized white dwarf in an intermediate polar (IP) system. This detection in quiescence is consistent with the IP classification proposed after the nova eruption. The XMM–Newton EPIC X-ray flux is |${\simeq} 1.3 \times 10^{-12}$|  erg cm |$^{-2}$|  s |$^{-1}$| at a distance, most likely, larger than 5 kpc, emitted in the whole 0.2–12 keV range without a significant cut-off energy. The X-ray spectra are complex; they can be fitted including a power-law component with a relatively flat slope (a power-law index |$\simeq$| 1), although, alternatively, a hard thermal component at kT |$\ge$| 19 keV also yields a good fit. The SALT optical spectra obtained in 2019 March and 2022 May are quite typical of IPs, with strong emission lines, including some due to a high ionization potential, like He  ii at 4685.7 Å. Nebular lines of O [ iii ] were prominent in 2019 March, but their intensity and equivalent width appeared to be decreasing during that month, and they were no longer detectable in 2022, indicating that the nova ejecta dispersed. Complex profiles of the He  ii lines of V407 Lup are also characteristic of IPs, giving further evidence for this classification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The eruption of Nova V2891 Cygni in 2019 offers a rare opportunity to explore the shock-induced processes in novae ejecta. The spectral evolution shows noticeable differences in the evolution of various oxygen emission lines such as O  i 7773 Å, O  i 8446 Å, O  i 1.1286  μ m, O  i 1.3164  μ m, etc. Here, we use spectral synthesis code cloudy to study the temporal evolution of these oxygen emission lines. Our photoionization model requires the introduction of a component with a very high density (⁠|$n \sim 10^{11}$| cm |$^{-3}$|⁠) and an enhanced oxygen abundance (O/H |$\sim$| 28) to produce the O  i 7773 Å emission line, suggesting a stratification of material with high oxygen abundance within the ejecta. An important outcome is the behaviour of the O  i 1.3164  μ m line, which could only be generated by invoking the collisional ionization models in cloudy. Our phenomenological analysis suggests that O  i 1.3164  μ m emission originates from a thin, dense shell characterized by a high density of about |$10^{12.5}\!-\!10^{12.8}$| cm |$^{-3}$|⁠ , which is most likely formed due to the strong internal collisions. If such is the case, the O  i 1.3164  μ m emission presents itself as a tracer of shock-induced dust formation in V2891 Cyg. The collisional ionization models have also been successful in creating the high-temperature conditions (⁠|$\sim 7.07\!-\!7.49 \times 10^5$|  K) required to reproduce the observed high ionization potential coronal lines, which coincide with the epoch of dust formation and evolution of the O  i 1.3164 μ m emission line. We present time-dependent nova outburst models with optically thick winds for 1.2 and 1.35 |$\, M_{\odot }$| white dwarfs (WDs) with a mass-accretion rate of |$5 \times 10^{-9}\, M_{\odot }$|  yr−1 and for a 1.3 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD with |$2 \times 10^{-9}\, M_{\odot }$|  yr−1. The X-ray flash occurs 11 d before the optical peak of the 1.2 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD and 2.5 d before the peak of the 1.3 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD. The wind mass-loss rate of the 1.2 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD (1.3 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD) reaches a peak of |$6.4 \times 10^{-5}\, M_{\odot }$| yr−1 (⁠|$7.4 \times 10^{-5}\, M_{\odot }$| yr−1) at the epoch of the maximum photospheric expansion with the lowest photospheric temperature of log  T ph (K) = 4.33 (4.35). The nuclear energy generated during the outburst is lost in the form of radiation (61% for the 1.2 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD; 47% for the 1.3 |$\, M_{\odot }$| WD), gravitational energy of ejecta (39%; 52%), and kinetic energy of the wind (0.28%; 0.29%). We found an empirical relation for fast novae between the time to optical maximum from the outburst t peak and the expansion timescale τexp. With this relation, we are able to predict the time to optical maximum t peak from the ignition model (at t = 0) without following a time-consuming nova wind evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We review the evolution of our understanding of the planetary nebulae phenomenon and their place in the scheme of stellar evolution. The historical steps leading to our current understanding of central star evolution and nebular formation are discussed. Recent optical imaging, X-ray, ultraviolet, infrared, millimeter wave, and radio observations have led to a much more complex picture of the structure of planetary nebulae. The optically bright regions have multiple shell structures (rims, shells, crowns, and haloes), which can be understood within the interacting winds framework. However, the physical mechanism responsible for bipolar and multipolar structures that emerged during the proto-planetary nebulae phase is yet to be identified. Our morphological classifications of planetary nebulae are hampered by the effects of sensitivity, orientation, and field-of-view coverage, and the fraction of bipolar or multipolar nebulae may be much higher than commonly assumed. The optically bright bipolar lobes may represent low-density, ionization-bounded cavities carved out of a neutral envelope by collimated fast winds. Planetary nebulae are sites of active synthesis of complex organic compounds, suggesting that planetary nebulae play a major role in the chemical enrichment of the Galaxy. Accretion discs are fundamental to much of astronomy. They can occur around stars, both young and old, around compact objects they provide a window into the extremes of physics, and around supermassive black holes in galaxy centres, they generate spectacular luminosities that can outshine the entire galaxy. However, our understanding of the inner workings of accretion discs remains far from complete. Here, we revisit a conundrum in the observations of some of the simplest accreting systems: the cataclysmic variables (CVs). The high-accretion-rate states of (non-magnetic) CVs can be divided into the short-lived outbursts (∼a week), typical of dwarf novae (DNe), and the long-lived (and sometimes perpetual) high states of nova-like (NL) CVs. Since both sorts of high-state occur in approximately steady-state accretion discs with similar properties and accretors, we would expect them to display similar spectral energy distributions. However, previous analyses based on UV spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer have shown that their spectral energy distributions are different. We perform a re-analysis of the data using up to date calibrations and distance (and thus dereddening) estimates to test whether this difference persists and whether it is statistically significant over the sample. We find that it does persist, and it is statistically significant. We propose routes to investigating this discrepancy further and discuss the implications this has for other accreting systems, such as X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, and protoplanetary discs. We present high‐resolution (0.06 Å px −1$$ {}^{-1} $$) spectroscopic observations of the recurrent nova T Coronae Borealis obtained during the last 1.5 years (September 2022–January 2024), with the 2.0‐m RCC telescope of the Rozhen National Astronomical Observatory, Bulgaria. Double‐peaked emission is visible in the Hα$$ {H}_{\alpha } $$ line after the end of the superactive state. We subtract the red giant contribution and measure the distance between the peaks (Δva$$ \Delta {v}_a $$) of the line. For the period July 2023–January 2024, we find that Δva$$ \Delta {v}_a $$ is in range 90<Δva<120$$ 90<\Delta {v}_a<120 $$ km s −1$$ {}^{-1} $$. Assuming that the emission is from the accretion disc around the white dwarf, we find average radius of the accretion disc Rdisc=89±19$$ {R}_{\mathrm{disc}}=89\pm 19 $$ R ⊙$$ {}_{\odot } $$, which is approximately equal to the Roche lobe size of the white dwarf. Our results indicate that tidal torque plays an important role but that the disc can extend up to the Roche lobe of the accreting star. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SW Sex-type stars are the dominate population of cataclysmic variables (CVs) just above the period gap and are vital for understanding of CV evolution. We have monitored TT Tri for nearly 15 yr, and more observations yield a more reliable estimation for its orbital period variation. In this work, we present a detailed analysis about its orbital period variation. TT Tri experiences a rapid period decay with a decay rate of |$-5.67\times 10^{-11}\, \mathrm{s/s}$| plus a period oscillation at about 9.6 yr. The oscillation could be caused by the magnetic activities of the low-mass star or/and a circumbinary body, while the rapid period decrease cannot be accounted for by the magnetic braking or even including an intensive disc wind. We find that mass overflow though the L 3 point can take the angular momentum away effectively and that this mass overflow could account for the rapid period decay observed in TT Tri. We propose that this kind of angular momentum loss may play a crucial role in CV evolution, and further research is in progress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IW And-type dwarf novae are anomalous Z Cam stars featured with outbursts happening during standstill states, which are not expected in the standard disc instability model. The physical mechanisms for these variations remain unclear. In this study, we report the discovery of a new candidate IW And-type dwarf nova J0652+2436, identified with its frequent outbursts from the slowly rising standstill states. Luckily, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite observations during a long standstill state and the earlier K2 observations give a chance to find the orbital and negative superhump period in the light curve of J0652+2436, allowing the measurement of its mass ratio of 0.366. This mass ratio is marginally possible for the tidal instability to set in according to previous smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. Thus, we propose that the outbursts in J0652+2436 are likely to be caused by the growing accretion disc during standstills, in favour of the previous hypothesis of the mechanisms lying in all IW And stars. We conclude that J0652+2436 might be the first IW And star with both a precessing tilted disc and tidal instability, which will be an important laboratory for studying the accretion disc dynamics and help understand the IW And phenomenon. We report on spin variations in the intermediate polar and cataclysmic variable CC Scl, as seen by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). By studying both the spin period and its harmonic, we find that the spin has varied since it was first observed in 2011. We find the latest spin value for the source to be 389.473(6) s, equivalent to 0.00450779(7) d, 0.02 s shorter than the first value measured. A linear fit to these and intermediate data give a rate of change of spin (Ṗ) ∼ −4.26(2.66)× 10−11 and a characteristic time-scale τ ∼ 2.90 × 105 yr, in line with other known intermediate polars with varying spin. The spin profile of this source also matches theoretical spin profiles of high-inclination intermediate polars, and furthermore, appears to have changed in shape over a period of three years. Such 'spin-up' in an intermediate polar is considered to be from mass accretion on to the white dwarf (the primary), and we note the presence of dwarf nova eruptions in this source as being a possible catalyst of the variations. We have carried out multiwavelength spectroscopic and photometric studies of the object SRGe J194401.8+284452 (2RXS J194401.4+284456, XMMSL2 J194402.0+284451, 2SXPS J194401.7+284450), the brightest X-ray source in the position uncertainty ellipse of the unidentified gamma-ray source 4FGL J1943.9+2841, with the goal of determining its nature and the possible association with the gamma-ray source. The object is shown to be a cataclysmic variable with an orbital period of about 1.5 h and clear evidence for the presence of an accretion disk around the white dwarf. It can be classified by its properties as an intermediate polar whose association with the gamma-ray source is unlikely. SRGe J194401.8+284452 exhibits abrupt transitions between its high and low luminosity states simultaneously in the optical and X-ray bands, which remain relatively stable on time scales of several months/years. This may be related to the change in the accretion rate by an order of magnitude. We have obtained constraints on the mass (0.3–0.9 ) and temperature ( K) of the accreting white dwarf in the low state, the mass of the donor star (), and the orbital inclination of the binary system (). In the low state we have detected an 8-min brightness variability in the optical band that is most likely related to the white-dwarf spin and not to the nonradial pulsations. In the high state we have revealed stochastic brightness variations on time scales of 1–15 min with amplitudes of 0.2– . SRGe J194401.8+284452 replenishes the small group of intermediate polars with the shortest orbital periods lying below the gap in the period distribution of these systems and exhibiting transitions between the states with high and low accretion rates. The brightness of the source at a level of in the 2000–8000 Å range and erg s cm in the range 0.3–10 keV makes it an interesting object for a detailed study of the physics of such systems. We analyze 15 yr of eclipse timings of the polar V808 Aur. The rapid ingress/egress of the white dwarf and bright accretion region provide timings as precise as a few tenths of a second for rapid cadence photometric data. We find that between 2015 and 2018, the eclipse timings deviated from a linear ephemeris by more than 30 s. The rapid timing change is consistent with the periastron passage of a planet in an eccentric orbit about the polar. The best-fit orbital period is 11 ± 1 yr and we estimate a projected mass of M sin (i) = 6.8 ± 0.7 Jupiter masses. We also show that the eclipse timings are correlated with the brightness of the polar with a slope of 1.1 s mag−1. This is likely due to the change in the geometry of the accretion curtains as a function of the mass transfer rate in the polar. While an eccentric planet offers an excellent explanation to the available eclipse data for V808 Aur, proposed planetary systems in other eclipsing polars have often struggled to accurately predict future eclipse timings. We present the results of four magnetohydrodynamic simulations and one alpha-disk simulation of accretion disks in a compact binary system, neglecting vertical stratification and assuming a locally isothermal equation of state. We demonstrate that in the presence of a net vertical field, disks that extend out to the 3:1 mean-motion resonance grow eccentricity in full MHD in much the same way as in hydrodynamical disks. Hence, turbulence due to the magnetorotational instability (MRI) does not impede the tidally driven growth of eccentricity in any meaningful way. However, we find two important differences with alpha-disk theory. First, in MHD, eccentricity builds up in the inner disk with a series of episodes of radial disk-breaking into two misaligned eccentric disks, separated by a region of circular orbits. Standing eccentric waves are often present in the inner eccentric disk. Second, the successful spreading of an accretion disk with MRI turbulence out to the resonant radius is nontrivial—and much harder than spreading an alpha disk. This is due to the tendency to develop overdense rings in which tidal torques overwhelm MRI transport and truncate the disk too early. We believe that the inability to spread the disk sufficiently was the reason why our previous attempt to excite eccentricity via the 3:1 mean-motion resonance with MHD failed. Exactly how MHD disks successfully spread outward in compact binary systems is an important problem that has not yet been understood.

Using high-precision astrometric data from Gaia DR3 and updated systemic velocities from the literature, the kinematical properties of cataclysmic variables (CVs) were investigated. By constraining the data according to the total space velocity error and Galactic population class, a reliable sample of data was obtained. Nonmagnetic CVs located in the thin disk have been found to have a total space velocity dispersion of σ _ν = 46.33 ± 4.23 km s ^−1 , indicating that the thin disk CVs with a mean kinematical age of τ = 3.95 ± 0.75 Gyr are much younger than the local thin disk of the Galaxy with τ ~ 6–9 Gyr. Total space velocity dispersions of nonmagnetic CVs belonging to the thin disk component of the Galaxy were found to be σ _ν = 47.67 ± 3.94 and σ _ν = 44.43 ± 4.33 km s ^−1 for the systems below and above the orbital period gap, respectively, corresponding to kinematical ages of τ = 4.19 ± 0.71 and τ = 3.61 ± 0.74 Gyr. γ velocity dispersions of the thin disk CVs below and above the gap were obtained σ _γ = 27.52 ± 2.28 and σ _γ = 25.65 ± 2.44 km s ^−1 , respectively. This study also shows that the orbital period is decreasing with increasing age, as expected from the standard theory. The age-orbital period relation for nonmagnetic thin disk CVs was obtained as dP / dt = −2.09( ± 0.22) × 10 ^−5 s yr ^−1 . However, a significant difference could not be found between the γ velocity dispersions of the systems below and above the gap, which were calculated to be σ _γ = 27.52 ± 2.28 and σ _γ = 25.65 ± 2.44 km s ^−1 , respectively.

LT Eri is a long-period eclipsing cataclysmic variable star (CV). This study investigates its outbursts, negative superhumps (NSHs), tilted-disk precession, eclipse-depth variations, and observed minus calculated ( O – C ) behavior, using photometric data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the Zwicky Transient Facility, the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae, and the American Association of Variable Star Observers. Our analysis reveals an outburst period of 14.7(31) days, with variable periods ranging from 11.62(4) to 22.15(13) days. Both long and short outbursts were detected, lasting approximately 18 and 10 days, respectively. Analysis of the TESS photometry shows that the NSH period is updated to 0.16265161(7) days, persists during the outburst, and its amplitude is correlated with the outburst phase. A suspected signal of tilted-disk precession with a period of 3.5781(6) days is also detected. Additionally, the eclipse depth shows a periodic variation of 3.6270(9) days, closely matching the tilted-disk precession period; however, no biperiodic variation is found, as seen in the dwarf nova HS 2325+8205, suggesting that this phenomenon is not universal. An O – C analysis reveals a weak oscillation with a period of 3.5772(6) days. Our superposition of sine curves consistent with the NSH period and amplitude, along with mean eclipse curves, produces periodic O – C variations with a period of 3.6666(2) days. This indicates that the observed periodic variations in O – C , often around the disk precession period in CVs, may result from the beat between the NSHs and the eclipse rather than actual variations in the accretion disk.

We present a systematic search for periodic X-ray sources in the bulge of M31, using ∼2 Ms of archival Chandra observations spanning a temporal baseline of 16 yr. Utilizing the Gregory–Loredo algorithm that is designed for photon-counting, phase-folded light curves, we detect seven periodic X-ray sources, among which four are newly discovered. Three of these sources are novae, the identified periods of which range between 1.3 and 2.0 h and are most likely the orbital period. The other four sources are low-mass X-ray binaries, the identified periods of which range between 0.13 and 19.3 h and are also likely orbital due to a clear eclipsing/dipping behaviour in the light curve. We address implications on the X-ray binaries population of the M31 bulge. Our study demonstrates the potential of using archival X-ray observations to systematically identify periodic X-ray sources in external galaxies, which would provide valuable information about the underlying exotic stellar populations. The evolution of cataclysmic variables (CVs) is driven by period changes ( P ̇ ), for which the long-venerable consensus is the magnetic braking model (MBM). The MBM has its only distinctive assumption being a power-law "recipe" describing the angular momentum loss (AML) in the binary, producing a single unique evolutionary track with P ̇ as a function of the orbital period. This required prediction can be used to test the most-fundamental assumption of MBM, but it has never been tested previously. In this paper, I collect P ̇ measures for 52 CVs of all types. First, 44% of the CVs have positive P ̇ , with such being impossible in MBM. Second, even among the CVs with negative P ̇ , their P ̇ measures are always more negative than required by MBM, with an average deviation of 110×. Third, three CVs have large chaotic variations in P ̇ that are impossible for MBM, proving that some unknown mechanism exists and is operating that dominates for these systems. Fourth, the MBM does not account for the long-term effects on evolution arising from the large sudden period decreases seen across many nova events, with this unaccounted effect dominating for the majority of nova systems and changing the sign of the overall evolutionary P ̇ . Fifth, three recurrent novae are observed to suddenly change P ̇ by an order of magnitude across a nova event, with this being impossible in the MBM. In all, the required MBM P ̇ predictions all fail for my 52 CVs, usually by orders of magnitude, so the MBM AML-recipe is wrong by orders of magnitude. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Al–Mg mineral isochron studies using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have revealed the initial 26Al/27Al ratios, (26Al/27Al)0, for individual Ca‐Al‐rich inclusions (CAIs) in meteorites. We find that the relative sensitivity factors of 27Al/24Mg ratio for SIMS analysis of hibonite, one of the major constituent minerals of CAIs, exhibit variations based on their chemical compositions. This underscores the critical need for using appropriate hibonite standards to obtain accurate Al−Mg data. We measured the Al−Mg mineral isochron for hibonite in a fine‐grained CAI (FGI) from the Northwest Africa 8613 reduced CV chondrite by SIMS using synthesized hibonite standards with 27Al/24Mg of ~30, ~100, and ~400. The obtained mineral isochron of hibonite in the FGI yields (26Al/27Al)0 of (4.73 ± 0.09) × 10−5, which is identical to that previously obtained from the mineral isochron of spinel and melilite in the same FGI (Kawasaki et al., 2020). The uncertainties of (26Al/27Al)0 indicate that the constituent minerals in the FGI formed within ~0.02 Myr in the earliest solar system. The disequilibrium O‐isotope distributions of the minerals in the FGI suggest that the O‐isotope compositions of the nebular gas from which they condensed underwent a transitional change from 16O‐rich to 16O‐poor within ~0.02 Myr in the earliest solar system. We present the light curve of the 2020 outburst of PQ Andromedae, which was only the fourth confirmed on record, with a mean interval of 27 years. The outburst was detected at magnitude 10.5, representing an amplitude of -8.6 magnitudes above mean quiescence of 19.1. The main part of the outburst lasted about 53 days, although it is likely that the first part was missed. The system underwent five dramatic rebrightening episodes during the decline phase, the longest appearing as an eight-day plateau in the light curve. Long photometry runs were not possible due to the short observing window. Humps were detected during one run which resembled superhumps. The strongest signal in the photometry was at 17.835(35) cycles/d, or 0.05607(11) d. The system was still slightly above quiescence more than 800 days after the outburst started. The observed characteristics of PQ And are consistent with it being a member of the WZ Sge subclass. Moreover, in terms of outburst frequency and amplitude, orbital period, and light curve characteristics, PQ And appears to be a close sibling of WZ Sge itself. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

1RXS J083842.1−282723 is a nearly synchronous magnetic cataclysmic variable with a simple X-ray light curve. While its orbital period was fairly well established at P orb = 98.4 minutes from optical spectroscopy, indirect estimates of P spin/ P orb ranged from 0.90 to 0.96 because the short X-ray light curves could not determine the beat period to a factor of 2. We analyze a recent 50 days TESS observation, and ground-based optical time-series photometry spanning 9 yr, that together measure precise beat, orbit, and spin periods and enable the X-ray and optical modulations to be phase aligned. Although the X-ray light curves do not distinguish between a beat period of 16.11 or 32.22 hr, all of the optical evidence favors the longer value, with complete pole switching of accretion every half beat cycle. This would require P spin/ P orb = 0.952. Long-term optical monitoring also shows a decline in accretion rate, and a change in the beat-folded light curve. It would be useful to obtain a new X-ray/optical observation of at least 32 hr duration to examine any associated change in accretion structure, and to confirm the spin and beat periods. Cataclysmic variables (CVs) that have evolved past the period minimum during their lifetimes are predicted to be systems with a brown dwarf donor. While population synthesis models predict that around 40–70 per cent of the Galactic CVs are post-period minimum systems referred to as 'period bouncers', only a few dozen confirmed systems are known. We report the study and characterization of a new eclipsing CV, SRGeJ041130.3+685350 (SRGeJ0411), discovered from a joint SRG/eROSITA and ZTF programme. The optical spectrum of SRGeJ0411 shows prominent hydrogen and helium emission lines, typical for CVs. We obtained optical high-speed photometry to confirm the eclipse of SRGeJ0411 and determine the orbital period to be P orb ≈ 97.530 min. The spectral energy distribution suggests that the donor has an effective temperature of ≲ 1800 K. We constrain the donor mass with the period–density relationship for Roche lobe-filling stars and find that M donor ≲ 0.04  M ⊙. The binary parameters are consistent with evolutionary models for post-period minimum CVs, suggesting that SRGeJ0411 is a new period bouncer. The optical emission lines of SRGeJ0411 are single-peaked despite the system being eclipsing, which is typically only seen due to stream-fed accretion in polars. X-ray spectroscopy hints that the white dwarf in SRGeJ0411 could be magnetic, but verifying the magnetic nature of SRGeJ0411 requires further investigation. The lack of optical outbursts has made SRGeJ0411 elusive in previous surveys, and joint X-ray and optical surveys highlight the potential for discovering similar systems in the near future. Cataclysmic variables (CV) encompass a diverse array of accreting white dwarf binary systems. Each class of CV represents a snapshot along an evolutionary journey, one with the potential to trigger a type Ia supernova event. The study of CVs offers valuable insights into binary evolution and accretion physics, with the rarest examples potentially providing the deepest insights. However, the escalating number of detected transients, coupled with our limited capacity to investigate them all, poses challenges in identifying such rarities. Machine learning (ML) plays a pivotal role in addressing this issue by facilitating the categorization of each detected transient into its respective transient class. Leveraging these techniques, we have developed a two-stage pipeline tailored to the Zwicky Transient Facility transient alert stream. The first stage is alerts filter aimed at removing non-CVs, while the latter is an ML classifier produced using Extreme Gradient Boosting, achieving a macro average area under the curve score of 0.92 for distinguishing between CV classes. By utilizing the generative topographic mapping algorithm with classifier posterior probabilities as input, we obtain representations indicating that CV evolutionary factors play a role in classifier performance, while the associated feature maps present a potent tool for identifying the features deemed most relevant for distinguishing between classes. Implementation of the pipeline in 2023 June yielded 51 intriguing candidates that are yet to be reported as CVs or classified with further granularity. We present a systematic search for periodic X-ray sources in 10 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) utilizing deep archival Chandra observations. By applying the Gregory–Loredo algorithm, we detect 28 periodic signals among 27 independent X-ray sources in 6 GCs, which include 21 newly discovered ones in the X-ray band. The remaining 4 GCs exhibit no periodic X-ray sources, mainly due to a relatively lower sensitivity of the data. Through analysis of their X-ray timing and spectral properties, complemented with available optical and ultraviolet information, we identify 21 of these periodic sources as cataclysmic variables (CVs). Combining with 11 periodic CVs in 47 Tuc similarly identified in the X-ray band, we compile the most comprehensive sample to date of GC CVs with a probable orbital period. The scarcity of old, short-period CVs in GCs compared to the Galactic inner bulge and solar neighbourhood, can be attributed to both a selection effect favouring younger, dynamically formed systems and the hindrance of CV formation through primordial binary evolution by stellar dynamical interactions common to the GC environment. Additionally, we identify a significant fraction of the GC CVs, most with an orbital period below or within the CV period gap, as probable magnetic CVs, but in the meantime there is a deficiency of luminous intermediate polars in the GC sample compared to the solar neighbourhood. We conduct numerical simulations of multiple nova eruptions in detached, widely separated symbiotic systems that include an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion to investigate the impact of white dwarf (WD) mass and binary separation on the evolution of the system. The accretion rate is determined using the Bondi–Hoyle–Lyttleton method, incorporating orbital momentum loss caused by factors such as gravitational radiation, magnetic braking, and drag. The WD in such a system accretes matter coming from the strong wind of an AGB companion until it finishes shedding its envelope. This occurs on an evolutionary time-scale of ≈3 × 105 yr. Throughout all simulations, we use a consistent AGB model with an initial mass of 1.0 M⊙ while varying the WD mass and binary separation, as they are the critical factors influencing nova eruption behaviour. We find that the accretion rate fluctuates between high and low rates during the evolutionary period, significantly impacted by the AGB's mass loss rate. We show that unlike novae in cataclysmic variables, the orbital period may either increase or decrease during evolution, depending on the model, while the separation consistently decreases. Furthermore, we have identified cases in which the WDs produce weak, non-ejective novae and experience mass gain. This suggests that provided the accretion efficiency can be achieved by a more massive WD and maintained for long enough, they could potentially serve as progenitors for type Ia supernovae. Observations, mainly of outbursts in dwarf novae, imply that the anomalous viscosity in highly ionized accretion discs is magnetic in origin and requires that the plasma ${\beta \sim 1}$. Until now, most simulations of the magnetic dynamo in accretion discs have used a local approximation (known as the shearing box). While these simulations demonstrate the possibility of a self-sustaining dynamo, the magnetic activity generated in these models saturates at $\beta \gg 1$. This long-standing discrepancy has previously been attributed to the local approximation itself. There have been recent attempts at simulating magnetic activity in global accretion discs with parameters relevant to the dwarf novae. These too find values of $\beta \gg 1$. We speculate that the tension between these models and the observations may be caused by numerical magnetic diffusivity. As a pedagogical example, we present exact time-dependent solutions for the evolution of weak magnetic fields in an incompressible fluid subject to linear shear and magnetic diffusivity. We find that the maximum factor by which the initial magnetic energy can be increased depends on the magnetic Reynolds number as ${\mathcal {R}}_{m}^{2/3}$. We estimate that current global numerical simulations of dwarf nova discs have numerical magnetic Reynolds numbers around six orders of magnitude less than the physical value found in dwarf nova discs of ${\mathcal {R}}_{m} \sim 10^{10}$. We suggest that, given the current limitations on computing power, expecting to be able to compute realistic dynamo action in observable accretion discs using numerical MHD is, for the time being, a step too far. We present the first reliable determination of the orbital period of the recurrent nova V2487 Oph (Nova Oph 1998). We derived a value of 0.753 ± 0.016 d (18.1 ± 0.4 h) from the radial velocity curve of the intense He  ii  λ4686 emission line as detected in time-series X-shooter spectra. The orbital period is significantly shorter than earlier claims, but it makes V2487 Oph one of the longest period cataclysmic variables known. The spectrum of V2487 Oph is prolific in broad Balmer absorptions that resemble a white dwarf spectrum. However, we show that they come from the accretion disc viewed at low inclination. Although highly speculative, the analysis of the radial velocity curves provides a binary mass ratio q ≈ 0.16 and a donor star mass M 2 ≈ 0.21 M⊙, assuming the reported white dwarf mass M 1 = 1.35 M⊙. A subgiant M-type star is tentatively suggested as the donor star. We were lucky to inadvertently take some of the spectra when V2487 Oph was in a flare state. During the flare, we detected high-velocity emission in the Balmer and He  ii λ4686 lines exceeding −2000 km s−1 at close to orbital phase 0.4. Receding emission up to 1200 km s−1 at about phase 0.3 is also observed. The similarities with the magnetic cataclysmic variables may point to magnetic accretion on to the white dwarf during the repeating flares. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TCP J18224935-2408280 was reported to be in outburst on 2021 May 19. Follow-up spectroscopic observations confirmed that the system was a symbiotic star. We present optical spectra obtained from the Himalayan Chandra Telescope during 2021–22. The early spectra were dominated by Balmer lines, He  i lines and high ionization lines such as He  ii. In the later observations, Raman scattered O  vi was also identified. Outburst in the system started as a disc instability, and later the signature of enhanced shell burning and expansion of photospheric radius of the white dwarf was identified. Hence we suggest this outburst is of combination nova type. The post-outburst temperature of the hot component remains above 1.5 × 105 K indicating a stable shell burning in the system for a prolonged time after the outburst. Based on our analysis of archival multiband photometric data, we find that the system contains a cool giant of M1-2 III spectral type with a temperature of ∼3600 K and a radius of ∼69 R⊙. The pre- and post-outburst light curve shows a periodicity of 631.25 ± 2.93 d; we consider this as the orbital period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superorbital signals and negative superhumps are thought to be related to the reverse precession of the nodal line in a tilted disc, but the evidence is lacking. Our results provide new evidence for the precession of the tilted disc. Based on the TESS and K2 photometry, we investigate the superorbital signals, negative superhumps, positive superhumps, and eclipse characteristics of the long-period eclipsing cataclysmic variable star SDSS J0812. We find superorbital signals, negative superhumps, and positive superhumps with periods of 3.0451(5) d, 0.152047(2) d, and 0.174686 (7) d, respectively, in the K2 photometry, but all disappear in the TESS photometry, where the positive superhumps are present only in the first half of the same campaign, confirming that none of them is permanently present in SDSS J0812. In addition, we find for the first time a cyclic variation of the O-C of minima, eclipse depth, and negative superhumps amplitudes for 3.045 (8) d, 3.040(6) d, and 3.053 (8) d in SDSS J0812, respectively, and all reach the maximum at ∼0.75 precession phases of the tilted disc, which provides new evidence for the precession of the tilted disc. We suggest that the O-C and eclipse depth variations may come from a shift of the brightness centre of the precession tilted disc. Our first finding on the periodic variation of negative superhumps amplitude with the superorbital signals is significant evidence that the origin of negative superhumps is related to the precession of the tilted disc. Arthur Anthony Page was at the forefront of astronomy in Queensland, Australia, for much of the second half of the twentieth century. This paper explores his life and achievements. He was a talented amateur astronomer who played a key role in the evolution of astronomical societies in the southeastern corner of the State of Queensland. He also was interested in research, especially in flare stars and cataclysmic variables, and built and equipped two observatories so that he could carry out these studies. He had access to some advanced instrumentation, and was keen to adopt new technologies such as photoelectric photometry--which was very unusual for amateur astronomers at this time. One of his discoveries was the chance flaring of the Be star 66 Ophiuchi in 1969. This was significant as this type of star had not previously been known to generate flares. Arthur Page also attended national and international conferences, published research papers in national and international journals, and produced star catalogues and star charts. Over the years, he built an international reputation in the shadowy boundary between professional and amateur astronomy. A long-time Internatonal Astronomical Union (IAU) member, he was an inaugural member of the Astronomical Society of Australia (a rare honour for an amateur astronomer), and was awarded an honorary PhD by the University of Queensland. Some accreting binary systems containing a white dwarf (such as classical novae or persistent supersoft sources) are seen to emit low-energy X-rays with temperatures of ∼ 10 ^6 K and luminosities exceeding 10 ^35 erg s ^−1 . These X-rays are thought to originate from nuclear burning on the white dwarf surface, either caused by a thermonuclear runaway (classical novae) or a high mass-accretion rate that sustains steady nuclear burning (persistent sources). The discovery of transient supersoft X-rays from ASASSN-16oh challenged these ideas, as no clear signatures of mass ejection indicative of a classical nova eruption were detected, and the origin of these X-rays remains controversial. It was unclear whether this star was one of a kind or representative of a larger, as yet undiscovered, group. Here, we present the discovery of 29 stars located in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds exhibiting long-duration, symmetrical optical outbursts similar to that seen in ASASSN-16oh. We observed one of these objects during an optical outburst and found it to be emitting transient supersoft X-rays, while no signatures of mass ejection (indicative of a classical nova eruption) were detected. We therefore propose that these objects form a homogeneous group of transient supersoft X-ray sources, which we dub “millinovae” because their optical luminosities are approximately a 1000 times fainter than those of ordinary classical novae.

Cataclysmic variables can experience short optical brightenings, which are commonly attributed to phenomena such as dwarf novae outbursts, micronovae, donor flares, or magnetic gating bursts. Since these events exhibit similar observational characteristics, their identification has often been ambiguous. In particular, magnetic gating bursts and micronovae have been suggested as alternative interpretations of the same phenomena. Here we show that the timescales and energies separate the optical brightenings into separate clusters consistent with their different classifications. This suggests that micronovae and magnetic gating bursts are in fact separate phenomena. Based on our findings, we develop diagnostic diagrams that can distinguish between these bursts/flares based on their properties. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach on observations of a newly identified intermediate polar, CTCV J0333-4451, which we classify as a magnetic gating system. CTCV J0333-4451 is the third highest spin-to-orbital period ratio intermediate polar with magnetic gating, suggesting that these bursts are common among these rare systems.

Based on the current detectable cataclysmic variable (CV) population in Galactic globular clusters (GCs), we show that there is not a clear relation between the number of sources per unit of mass and the stellar encounter rate, the cluster mass, or the cluster central density. If any, only in the case of core-collapsed GCs could there be an anticorrelation with the stellar encounter rate. Our findings contrast with previous studies where clear positive correlations were identified. Our results suggest that correlations between faint X-ray sources, from which often conclusions for the CV population are drawn, and the GC parameters considered here, are likely influenced by other type of X-ray sources, including other types of compact binaries, which have X-ray luminosities similar to CVs. The findings presented here also suggest that the role of primordial systems is more important than previously believed and that dynamical formation has less influence in the current detectable CV population. The long-standing paradigm that GCs are efficient factories of CVs formed via dynamical interactions does not seem to be supported by current observations.

We extend a magnetic braking (MB) model, which has been used earlier to address the evolution of cataclysmic variables, to address the spin period P spin evolution of fully convective M-dwarf (FCMD) stars. The MB mechanism is an α–Ω dynamo, which leads to stellar winds that carry away angular momentum. We model our MB torque such that the FCMDs experience an MB torque, approximately scaling as |$P_\mathrm{spin}^{-1}$| at shorter periods, before transitioning into a Skumanich-type MB torque, scaling as |$P_\mathrm{spin}^{-3}$|⁠. We also implement a parametrized reduction in the wind mass-loss owing to the entrapment of winds in dead zones. We choose a set of initial conditions and vary the two free parameters in our model to find a good match of our spin trajectories with open clusters containing FCMDs such as NGC2547, Pleiades, NGC2516, and Praesepe. We find that our model can explain the long spin periods of field stars and that a spread in spin distribution persists till over 3 Gyr. An advantage of our model is in relating physically motivated estimations of the magnetic field strength and stellar wind to properties of the stellar dynamo, which other models often remain agnostic about. We track the spin dependence of the wind mass-losses, Alfvén radii, and surface magnetic fields and find good agreement with observations. We discuss the implications of our results on the effect of the host FCMD on any orbiting exoplanets and our plans to extend this model to explain solar-like stars in the future. We present the first photometric analysis of the supernova (SN) impostor AT 2016blu in NGC 4559. This transient was discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search in 2012 and has continued its outbursts since then. Optical and infrared photometry of AT 2016blu reveals at least 19 outbursts in 2012–2022. Similar photometry from 1999 to 2009 shows no outbursts, indicating that the star was relatively stable in the decade before discovery. Archival Hubble Space Telescope observations suggest that the progenitor had a minimum initial mass of |$M \gtrsim 33$| M⊙ and a luminosity of |$L \gtrsim 10^{5.7}$| L⊙. AT 2016blu's outbursts show irregular variability with multiple closely spaced peaks having typical amplitudes of 1–2 mag and durations of 1–4 weeks. While individual outbursts have irregular light curves, concentrations of these peaks recur with a period of ∼113 ± 2 d. Based on this period, we predict upcoming outbursts in 2023 and 2024. AT 2016blu shares similarities with SN 2000ch in NGC 3432, where outbursts may arise from periastron encounters in an eccentric binary containing a luminous blue variable (LBV). We propose that AT 2016blu's outbursts are also driven by interactions that intensify around periastron in an eccentric system. Intrinsic variability of the LBV-like primary star may cause different intensity and duration of binary interaction at each periastron passage. AT 2016blu also resembles the periastron encounters of η Carinae prior to its Great Eruption and the erratic pre-SN eruptions of SN 2009ip. This similarity and the onset of eruptions in the past decade hint that AT 2016blu may also be headed for a catastrophe, making it a target of great interest. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we present the results of our multiwavelength campaign aimed at classifying Swift J170800−402551.8 as part of the Swift Deep Galactic Plane Survey (DGPS). We utilized Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations with the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, Chandra X-ray Observatory , Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER), X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM–Newton), Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), as well as multiwavelength archival observations from Gaia , VST Photometric Hα Survey, and VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea. The source displays a periodicity of 784 s in our XMM–Newton observation. The X-ray spectrum (XMM–Newton and NuSTAR) can be described by thermal bremsstrahlung radiation with a temperature of kT ≈ 30 keV. The phase-folded X-ray light curve displays a double-peaked, energy-dependent pulse profile. We used Chandra to precisely localize the source, allowing us to identify and study the multiwavelength counterpart. Spectroscopy with SALT identified a Balmer H α line, and potential He  i lines, from the optical counterpart. The faintness of the counterpart (r ≈ 21 AB mag) favours a low-mass donor star. Based on these criteria, we classify Swift J170800−402551.8 as a candidate intermediate polar cataclysmic variable, where the spin period of the white dwarf is 784 s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the results of our X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical follow-up campaigns of 1RXS J165424.6-433758, an X-ray source detected with the Swift Deep Galactic Plane Survey. The source X-ray spectrum (Swift and NuSTAR) is described by thermal bremsstrahlung radiation with a temperature of kT = 10.1 ± 1.2 keV, yielding an X-ray (0.3–10 keV8) luminosity L X = (6.5 ± 0.8) × 1031 erg s−1 at a Gaia distance of 460 pc. Spectroscopy with the Southern African Large Telescope revealed a flat continuum dominated by emission features, demonstrating an inverse Balmer decrement, the λ 4640 Bowen blend, almost a dozen He i lines, and He ii λ 4541, λ 4686, and λ 5411. Our high-speed photometry demonstrates a preponderance of flickering and flaring episodes, and revealed the orbital period of the system, P orb = 2.87 hr, which fell well within the cataclysmic variable (CV) period gap between 2 and 3 hr. Using the Catalina Sky Survey and Gaia alert data bases, we have carried out a systematic search for long-term variability of the brightness of dwarf novae in quiescence. A small, but significant portion of them revealed variability on time-scales between 2 and 14 yr which can be fitted, in some of the targets, by linear slopes of 0.14 mag yr−1 on average and up to 0.6 mag yr−1 in extreme cases. Another group of dwarf novae showed quasi-periodic variations in their quiescent brightness, with periods of 3.7 yr on average and up to 13 yr in extreme cases, and mean amplitudes of 0.5 mag, reaching up to 1.3 mag. The observed slopes could be understood as portions of a quasi-sinusoidal variability with larger periods, not covered by our data. SU UMa stars have, on average, smaller slope values and longer periods, compared to other dwarf novae. These variations could be interpreted as caused by magnetic activity of the secondary companion star, similar to the 11-yr solar cycle, but one could consider also other origins of this phenomenon. Continuing previous work on the identification and characterization of periodic and non-periodic variations in long and almost uninterrupted high cadence light curves of cataclysmic variables observed by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Telescope mission, the results on 23 nova-like variables and old novae out of sample of 127 such systems taken from the Ritter & Kolb catalogue are presented. All of them exhibit at least at some epochs either positive or negative (or both) superhumps, and in 19 of them superhumps were detected for the first time. The basic properties of the superhumps such as their periods, their appearance and disappearance, and their waveforms are explored. Together with recent reports in the literature, this elevates the number of known nova-like variables and old novae with superhumps by more than 50 per cent. The previous census of superhumps and the Stolz–Schoembs relation for these stars are updated. Attention is drawn to superhump properties in some stars that behave differently from the average, as well as to positive superhumps in high-mass ratio systems that defy theory. The evolution of novae and cataclysmic variables (CVs) is driven by changes in the binary orbital periods. In a direct and critical test for various evolution models and their physical mechanisms, I measure the sudden changes in the period (Δ P) across 14 nova eruptions, and I measure the steady period change during quiescence (Ṗ) for 20 inter-eruption intervals. The standard theory for Δ P is dominated by the mechanism of mass loss, and this fails completely for the five novae with negative values, and it fails to permit the Δ P for U Sco eruptions to change by one order of magnitude eruption to eruption. The Hibernation Model of evolution is refuted because all the Δ P measures are orders of magnitude too small to cause any significant drop in accretion luminosity, and indeed, near half of the nova have negative Δ P as the opposite of the required mechanism for any hibernation state. As for the Magnetic Braking Model, this fails by many orders of magnitude in its predictions of the required Ṗ for 9 out of 13 novae. The observed Ṗ values scatter, both positively and negatively, over a range of ±10−9, while the predicted values are from −10−13 to −10−11. This huge scatter is not possible with standard theory, and there must be some currently unknown mechanism to be added in, with this new mechanism 100–10 000× larger in effect than the current theory allows. In all, these failed predictions demonstrate that nova systems must have unknown physical mechanisms for both Δ P and Ṗ that dominate over all other effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Swift J0549.7−6812 is a Be/X-ray binary system (BeXRB) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) exhibiting an ∼6 s pulse period. Like many such systems, the variable X-ray emission is believed to be driven by the underlying behaviour of the mass donor Be star. In this paper, we report on X-ray observations of the brightest known outburst from this system, which reached a luminosity of ∼8 × 1037 erg s−1. These observations are supported by contemporaneous optical photometric observations, the first reported optical spectrum, as well as several years of historical data from Optical Gravitational Lens Explorer (OGLE) and Gaia. The latter strongly suggest a binary period of 46.1 d. All the observational data indicate that Swift J0549.7−6812 is a system that spends the vast majority of its time in X-ray quiescence, or even switched off completely. This suggests that occasional observations may easily miss it, and many similar systems, and thereby underestimate the massive star evolution numbers for the LMC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
