Despite the use of digital communication technologies in neurocognitive rehabilitation has been widely used in face-to-face interventions, the difficulties of using ICT-based tools to provide rehabilitation services and the unfamiliarity of the neuropsychologists with internet interventions limited the use of these kinds of interventions in their clinical practices. The lockdown and mitigating measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, on the other hand, forced the use of at-distance and online interventions as a means to mitigate the impact of those measures on the mental health and rehabilitation processes of people with neurological disorders. Overall, little is known about the perspectives of patients with acquired neurological conditions about rehabilitation services delivered at distance. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to explore the perceptions that patients with neurological disorders have on at-distance online neurocognitive rehabilitation, namely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sixteen patients with acquired neurological conditions attending an online neurocognitive rehabilitation program in a Portuguese rehabilitation center filled in an online questionnaire during the mandatory lockdown. The results of this study highlight the potential of delivering rehabilitation services at distance, presenting its advantages and limitations from patients' perspectives, as well as suggestions for improving both neurorehabilitation processes and the online rehabilitation platform used. Objective: Genetic testing is recommended for all pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma tumor-affected patients and, if positive, for their relatives, who are at risk of developing tumors. This study aims to assess the previously unexamined psychological impact of genetic testing and identify factors associated with this impact. Method: A nationwide sample of 103 individuals carrying succinate dehydrogenase mutations answered the Multidimensional Impact of Cancer Risk Assessment (MICRA) questionnaire plus two measures of general well-being (the SF-36 Health Survey and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale). Sociodemographic, clinical, and personality characteristics (the 5 personality factors and locus of control) were also assessed. Data were analyzed with bivariate and GLM univariate analyses. Results: Genetic testing-related mean scores were 6.12 for Distress, 11.58 for Uncertainty, 10.61 for Positive experiences, and almost 30% of the sample displayed high MICRA global suffering. Tumor-affected participants whose neoplasia was identified through presymptomatic screening felt that the genetic test has made it easier to cope with their disease. Significant aspects associated with genetic-testing-related Distress and Uncertainty included higher levels of Neuroticism and Agreeableness. An interaction between having the neoplasia and having children was also associated with higher levels of Distress. Education and Conscientiousness were associated with Positive experiences. Affected mutation carriers presented lower global quality of life and higher anxiety and depression levels than healthy mutation carriers. Conclusions: Genetic testing's impact depends on individual characteristics. The identified characteristics can inform clinical practice regarding who might benefit from special care in genetic counseling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this study was to propose a new functional magnetic resonance imaging ( fMRI) paradigm using a language-free adaptation of a 2-back working memory task to avoid cultural and educational bias. We additionally provide an index of the validity of the proposed paradigm and test whether the experimental task discriminates the behavioural performances of healthy participants from those of individuals with working memory deficits. Ten healthy participants and nine patients presenting working memory ( WM) deficits due to acquired brain injury ( ABI) performed the developed task. To inspect whether the paradigm activates brain areas typically involved in visual working memory ( VWM), brain activation of the healthy participants was assessed with fMRIs. To examine the task's capacity to discriminate behavioural data, performances of the healthy participants in the task were compared with those of ABI patients. Data were analysed with GLM-based random effects procedures and t-tests. We found an increase of the BOLD signal in the specialized areas of VWM. Concerning behavioural performances, healthy participants showed the predicted pattern of more hits, less omissions and a tendency for fewer false alarms, more self-corrected responses, and faster reaction times, when compared with subjects presenting WM impairments. The results suggest that this task activates brain areas involved in VWM and discriminates behavioural performances of clinical and non-clinical groups. We explore in which extent the notion of a reconfigurable vehicle, presented as an innovation, is an anticipated need given the current patterns of vehicle occupancy. The main goals of this study are: (i) Identify latent needs towards vehicle purchase choices and use; (ii) Characterize the individual perceptions about car use, in general; (iii) Characterize the individual perceptions about the reconfigurable notion of a vehicle, able to be adapted to daily occupancy requirements. The study is based on data from 4 focus groups. To identify that needs data are analyzed through the QFD VOC. Engineering requirements are translated with HOQ. To explore perceptions data are analyzed using a content analysis methodology with MaxQDA10 software©. Within the context of designing vehicles to comply with European regulations on CO 2 emissions, the results reveal latent needs in human dimensions of the product. The notion of a reconfigurable vehicle was identified as a latent need for different target markets. Stated barriers for the adoption of this particular vehicle do not fully overlap with what individuals ponder when they consider buying a current fuel-based. Background. Linear programming has been used extensively as a tool for nutritional recommendations. Extending the methodology to food formulation presents new challenges, since not all combinations of nutritious ingredients will produce an acceptable food. Furthermore, it would help in implementation and in ensuring the feasibility of the suggested recommendations. Objective. To extend the previously used linear programming methodology from diet optimization to food formulation using consistency constraints. In addition, to exemplify usability using the case of a porridge mix formulation for emergency situations in rural Mozambique. Methods. The linear programming method was extended with a consistency constraint based on previously published empirical studies on swelling of starch in soft porridges. The new method was exemplified using the formulation of a nutritious, minimum-cost porridge mix for children aged 1 to 2 years for use as a complete relief food, based primarily on local ingredients, in rural Mozambique. Results. A nutritious porridge fulfilling the consistency constraints was found; however, the minimum cost was unfeasible with local ingredients only. This illustrates the challenges in formulating nutritious yet economically feasible foods from local ingredients. The high cost was caused by the high cost of mineral-rich foods. A nutritious, low-cost porridge that fulfills the consistency constraints was obtained by including supplements of zinc and calcium salts as ingredients. Conclusions. The optimizations were successful in fulfilling all constraints and provided a feasible porridge, showing that the extended constrained linear programming methodology provides a systematic tool for designing nutritious foods. Studying changes in brain activation according to the valence of emotion-inducing stimuli is essential in the research on emotions. Due to the ecological potential of virtual reality, it is also important to examine whether brain activation in response to emotional stimuli can be modulated by the three-dimensional (3D) properties of the images. This study uses functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging to compare differences between 3D and standard (2D) visual stimuli in the activation of emotion-related brain areas. The stimuli were organized in three virtual-reality scenarios, each with a different emotional valence (pleasant, unpleasant and neutral). The scenarios were presented in a pseudo-randomized order in the two visualization modes to twelve healthy males. Data were analyzed through a GLM-based fixed effects procedure. Unpleasant and neutral stimuli activated the right amygdala more strongly when presented in 3D than in 2D. These results suggest that 3D stimuli, when used as "building blocks" for virtual environments, can induce increased emotional loading, as shown here through neuroimaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regardless of the health domain involved, the process of rehabilitation remains a challenge for professionals, patients and their families. In an attempt to overcome the limitations of traditional interventions, the technology of Virtual Reality (VR) has been increasingly applied to rehabilitation and begins to provide important tools which, however, generate debate and divergent positions. In order to examine VR's contributions to the field of rehabilitation in terms of its advantages and limitations, this study presents a systematic review of scientific literature in this area and provides a hierarchical model describing and systematizing the nature of the studies reviewed and their main subjects. The literature review focused on scientific papers indexed, until November 2010, in the ISI Web of Knowledge databases. Two independent researchers analyzed the included papers in NVivo 9 and the developed model was applied to the recoding of the material. A total of 963 articles were identified, of which 288 titles and abstracts were reviewed, after application of the exclusion criteria. The model indicates, as central categories in the literature: Type of Article (Empirical, Theoretical); Project Background; Type of Approach (Assistive Technology; Augmented Reality; Traditional Approaches; Virtual Reality). This last category (VR) was exhaustively decomposed so that its applicability, effects and future trends could be documented. Results suggest that VR's advantages include: its possible application to a variety of fields, cognitive functions, behaviors, neurological disorders and physical disabilities; its characteristics and respective consequences; and its potential to overcome limitations of traditional interventions. On the side of the limitations, papers address: VR's side effects, causes for the limitations, and suggested precautions. The results show promising trends in the use of VR technology in the field of rehabilitation, with implications for its future implementation. Results further indicate the need for continuing research that evaluates VR's applicability to rehabilitation in general and (neuro)cognitive rehabilitation in particular.

Traditionally, doctor-patient communication was considered a matter of <> and <>, and a topic for informal learning. Recently, studies have shown the importance of communication skills in medical practice. Doctor-patient communication skills, such as knowing how to listen, how to observe, and how to inform are today considered important components of Medical Education, although they are often difficult to integrate in Medical Curricula. In the current work, the authors describe the program of Communication in the Doctor-Patient Relationship, initiated in 2001 in the Medical School of the University of Porto, part of its undergraduate program. Future studies will allow us to assess the effectiveness of the learning and application of these skills in clinical practice.
