1. Handling Planned and Unplanned Missing Data in a Longitudinal Study

Abstract

While analyzing data, researchers are often faced with missing values. This is especially common in longitudinal studies in which participants might skip assessments. Unwanted missing data can introduce bias in the results and should thus be handled appropriately. However, researchers can sometimes want to include missing values in their data collection design to reduce its length and cost, a method called ``planned missingness.'' This paper review the recommended practices for handling both planned and unplanned missing data, with a focus on longitudinal studies. The current guidelines suggest to either use Full Information Maximum Likelihood or Multiple Imputation. Those techniques are illustrated with R code in the context of a longitudinal study with a representative Canadian sample on the psychological impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Many societies have seen a polarization in their social exchanges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals are frequently seen arguing online, and even in the real world. by understanding how to promote identity integration among polarized group members, we could contribute to the social harmony in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, reducing and defusing the "us vs. them" mindset could provide useful in promoting efficient health measures among those who remain skeptical. The present research is thus designed to further the understanding of the mechanisms behind identity integration.

Abstract

Canadians who are born in another country can struggle to find their place and voice in their new country. In fact, they can be a victim of discrimination, which prevents them from feeling Canadian and decrease their political participation (Bilodeau et al., 2020; Oskooii, 2020). However, when immigrants feel that they belong to their country of origin and their new country, that is that they identify to all of their cultural identities, they are more likely to participate in the political life (Scuzzarello, 2015). Few studies have investigated how the difference between the identification levels to the country of origin and the new country impacts political participation. According to the cognitive-developmental model of identity integration, having similar levels of identification is crucial to adapt to the social context and to fully integrate the country of adoption (Amiot et al., 2007). In other words, having similar levels of identification to the country of origin and to Canada, that is to see the cultural identities as integrated (Amiot et al., 2007), should be associated with more political participation. Thus, the current research is aimed to investigate the relationships between discrimination, levels of identification and political participation.

6. The malleability of collective memories: One year after the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan.

Abstract

How people view their social groups' history has important implications at both the collective and the individual levels. It has been established that collective memories, the representations of one's groups' history, differ between generations and individuals. Yet, it remains unclear how collective memories change in reaction to dramatic social change. Using temporal collective relative deprivation (TCRD), which reflects how individuals perceive their group's situation in history, we hypothesize that TCRD trajectories change over time and that highly identified individuals will be less likely to change their trajectory. Kyrgyz nationals (N = 166) responded immediately after the Tulip Revolution and one year later to TCRD measurements. Dual group‐based trajectory analysis indicates that a third of the sample modified their memories about their group's situation one year after a dramatic social change and that low identification with the group predicted this change. These results support the idea that collective memory is revised at the individual level after dramatic social change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
