Isoprene (Is) emissions by plants represent a loss of carbon and energy resources leading to the initial hypothesis that fast growing pioneer species in secondary tropical forests allocate carbon primarily to growth at the expense of isoprenoid defenses. In this study, we quantified leaf isoprene and methanol emissions from the abundant pantropical pioneer tree species Vismia guianensis and ambient isoprene concentrations above a diverse secondary forest in the central Amazon. As photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was varied (0 to 3000μ2s-1) under standard leaf temperature (30°C), isoprene emissions from V. guianensis increased without saturation up to 80n2s-1. A nonlinear increase in isoprene emissions with respect to net photosynthesis (Pn) resulted in the fraction of Pn dedicated to isoprene emissions increasing with light intensity (up to 2% of Pn). Emission responses to temperature under standard light conditions (PAR of 1000μ2s-1) resulted in the classic uncoupling of isoprene emissions (Topt, iso>40°C) from net photosynthesis (Topt, Pn Combining double low line 30.0-32.5°C) with up to 7% of Pn emitted as isoprene at 40°C. Under standard environmental conditions of PAR and leaf temperature, young V. guianensis leaves showed high methanol emissions, low Pn, and low isoprene emissions. In contrast, mature leaves showed high Pn, high isoprene emissions, and low methanol emissions, highlighting the differential control of leaf phenology over methanol and isoprene emissions. High daytime ambient isoprene concentrations (11ppbv) were observed above a secondary Amazon rainforest, suggesting that isoprene emissions are common among neotropical pioneer species. The results are not consistent with the initial hypothesis and support a functional role of methanol during leaf expansion and the establishment of photosynthetic machinery and a protective role of isoprene for photosynthesis during high temperature extremes regularly experienced in secondary rainforest ecosystems.

Despite orders of magnitude difference in atmospheric reactivity and great diversity in biological functioning, little is known about monoterpene speciation in tropical forests. Here we report vertically resolved ambient air mixing ratios for 12 monoterpenes in a central Amazon rainforest including observations of the highly reactive cis-β-ocimene (160 ppt), trans-β-ocimene (79 ppt), and terpinolene (32 ppt) which accounted for an estimated 21% of total monoterpene composition yet 55% of the upper canopy monoterpene ozonolysis rate. All 12 monoterpenes showed a mixing ratio peak in the upper canopy, with three demonstrating subcanopy peaks in 7 of 11 profiles. Leaf level emissions of highly reactive monoterpenes accounted for up to 1.9% of photosynthesis confirming light-dependent emissions across several Amazon tree genera. These results suggest that highly reactive monoterpenes play important antioxidant roles during photosynthesis in plants and serve as near-canopy sources of secondary organic aerosol precursors through atmospheric photooxidation via ozonolysis.

PIT & fissure sealants (Dentistry) ,ULTRASONIC effects ,BOND strengths ,MOLARS ,DENTAL pulp cavities - Abstract
The effect of ultrasonic activation (UA) on marginal adaptation, intratubular penetration and bond strength provided by three calcium silicate‐based sealers was evaluated. Ninety‐six distobuccal root canals of maxillary molars were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 12) according to the sealer and UA application: EndoSequence BC sealer (ESBC), Sealer Plus BC (SPBC) and Bio‐C Sealer (BCS), using AH Plus (AH) as a control group. The specimens were sectioned at 2, 4 and 6 mm from the apex. The data were statistically analysed using Kruskall–Wallis, Dunn, Mann–Whitney and chi‐squared tests. UA improved the marginal adaptation of ESBC (6 mm), SPBC (all levels), BCS (2/4 mm) and AH (4 mm) (p < 0.05); the bond strength of SBPC (2 mm) and BCS (6 mm) were also improved (p < 0.05). The UA of endodontic silicate‐based sealers improved the marginal adaptation in all levels and the bond strength of SBPC and BCS sealer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Many causes of vision impairment can be prevented or treated. With an ageing global population, the demands for eye health services are increasing. We estimated the prevalence and relative contribution of avoidable causes of blindness and vision impairment globally from 1990 to 2020. We aimed to compare the results with the World Health Assembly Global Action Plan (WHA GAP) target of a 25% global reduction from 2010 to 2019 in avoidable vision impairment, defined as cataract and undercorrected refractive error. Methods: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of population-based surveys of eye disease from January, 1980, to October, 2018. We fitted hierarchical models to estimate prevalence (with 95% uncertainty intervals [UIs]) of moderate and severe vision impairment (MSVI; presenting visual acuity from

Background: Health-care needs change throughout the life course. It is thus crucial to assess whether health systems provide access to quality health care for all ages. Drawing from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019), we measured the Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index overall and for select age groups in 204 locations from 1990 to 2019. Methods: We distinguished the overall HAQ Index (ages 0-74 years) from scores for select age groups: the young (ages 0-14 years), working (ages 15-64 years), and post-working (ages 65-74 years) groups. For GBD 2019, HAQ Index construction methods were updated to use the arithmetic mean of scaled mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIRs) and risk-standardised death rates (RSDRs) for 32 causes of death that should not occur in the presence of timely, quality health care. Across locations and years, MIRs and RSDRs were scaled from 0 (worst) to 100 (best) separately, putting the HAQ Index on a different relative scale for each age group. We estimated absolute convergence for each group on the basis of whether the HAQ Index grew faster in absolute terms between 1990 and 2019 in countries with lower 1990 HAQ Index scores than countries with higher 1990 HAQ Index scores and by Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintile. SDI is a summary metric of overall development. Findings: Between 1990 and 2019, the HAQ Index increased overall (by 19·6 points, 95% uncertainty interval 17·9-21·3), as well as among the young (22·5, 19·9-24·7), working (17·2, 15·2-19·1), and post-working (15·1, 13·2-17·0) age groups. Large differences in HAQ Index scores were present across SDI levels in 2019, with the overall index ranging from 30·7 (28·6-33·0) on average in low-SDI countries to 83·4 (82·4-84·3) on average in high-SDI countries. Similarly large ranges between low-SDI and high-SDI countries, respectively, were estimated in the HAQ Index for the young (40·4-89·0), working (33·8-82·8), and post-working (30·4-79·1) groups. Absolute convergence in HAQ Index was estimated in the young group only. In contrast, divergence was estimated among the working and post-working groups, driven by slow progress in low-SDI countries. Interpretation: Although major gaps remain across levels of social and economic development, convergence in the young group is an encouraging sign of reduced disparities in health-care access and quality. However, divergence in the working and post-working groups indicates that health-care access and quality is lagging at lower levels of social and economic development. To meet the needs of ageing populations, health systems need to improve health-care access and quality for working-age adults and older populations while continuing to realise gains among the young. - Abstract
ABSTRACTThis study analyzed the chemical composition of OGEO and its effects on growth, viability, antrum formation and mRNA expression for superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and peroxiredoxin 6 (Prdx6) in bovine secondary follicles cultured in vitro. The follicles were cultured in TCM-199+ alone or supplemented with 0.125, 0.25 and 0.50% OGEO for 18 days. Follicle diameters, viability, antrum formation and the levels of mRNA for SOD, CAT, GPX1and PRDX6in cultured follicles were evaluated. The results showed that the main components of OGEO were Eugenol and 1.8-Cineol. The follicles cultured with OGEO maintained morphology, viability and growth similar to the control group. Interestingly, follicles cultured with 0.5% or 0.25% OGEO had, respectively, higher levels of mRNAs for PRDX6 and CAT than those cultured in control medium. In conclusion, OGEO increases mRNA expression for PRDX6 and CAT in bovine secondary follicles cultured in vitro.
