The genus Boea Comm. ex Lam. is revised. Eleven species are recognised, including the new species Boea morobensis C.Puglisi. A key is provided, all names are typified, and the species are described.

Microchirita (C.B. Clarke) YiN Z. Wang (Gesneriaceae: Dicymocarpoideae) in Thailand is revised and 29 species are recognised, two of which have three varieties each. Eight new species are described, M

A new species of Paraboea, P. fimbriata C.Puglisi & Phutthai, from Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand, is described.

The new species Ornithoboea grandiflora D.J. Middleton and new variety Ornithoboea maxwellii var. minutiflora D.J. Middleton are described.

The genus Damrongia Kerr ex Craib is revised. We recognise eight species in Thailand, including one newly described. This account includes an identification key, species descriptions, photographs of several species, and IUCN conservation assessments.

The genus Middletonia in Thailand is revised. We recognise four species, including the newly described Middletonia glebosa C.Puglisi and the resurrected M. reticulata (Barnett) C.Puglisi. A key to the species, full descriptions and proposed conservation assessments are provided.

12 The Loxocarpinae, also known as the “Boea group”, are the subtribe of Gesneriaceae 13 which includes Boea and a number of segregated genera and close relatives. This group 14 currently comprises over 200 species in 15 genera. Here we present the most up-to-date 15 phylogeny, covering all the genera known to belong to the group, based on Bayesian 16 Inference and Parsimony of the nuclear ITS and the plastid regions trnL-trnF (intron 17 and spacer) and ndhFtrnL (spacers). The results show discrepancies between the 18 current generic delimitation in the subtribe and the clades delineated by the phylogeny. 19 As a result Boea, Damrongia, Streptocarpus and Paraboea are recircumscribed in an 20 attempt to establish a more natural classification and a number of new combinations are 21 made. The new genus Middletonia is described. 22

Based on a phylogenetic analysis of Asian Gesneriaceae with the most comprehensive coverage at the genus level to date, the new genus Chayamaritia is established and described in subfamily Didymocarpoideae, tribe Trichosporeae, subtribe Didymocarpinae. It contains two species, of which one, Chayamaritia smitinandii (B.L.Burtt) D.J.Middleton, was formerly placed in the genera Chirita and Henckelia. The other, Chayamaritia banksiae D.J.Middleton, is newly described. The exclusion of Chayamaritia smitinandii from Henckelia further clarifies the taxonomic and biogeographic limits of Henckelia following its considerable recircumscription during the recent remodelling and synonymisation of Chirita.

Four new species of Microchirita (C. B. Clarke) Yin Z. Wang are here described: M. huppatatensis C. Puglisi and M. personata C. Puglisi, from Uthai Thani province, and M. hemratii C. Puglisi and M. lilacina C. Puglisi, from Tak province. Proposed conservation assessments are given for all species.

The phylogenetic relationships between Paraboea, Trisepalum and Phylloboea, in the twisted-fruited clade of the advanced Asiatic and Malesian Gesneriaceae, were investigated using nuclear and chloroplast data. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference analyses demonstrated unambiguously that the three genera originated from a single common ancestor, that Phylloboea is nested deeply in Trisepalum and that in turn Trisepalum is nested in Paraboea. As Paraboea has been conserved against Phylloboea and Trisepalum the necessary new combinations in Paraboea are made here. The enlarged genus Paraboea comprises around 120 species. The phylogeny presented here will provide a valuable framework for future biogeographic and comparative studies in Gesneriaceae.

Introduction The genus Conostegia (Miconieae, Melastomataceae) includes shrubs and trees distributed in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, N Andes and Brazil (Schnell, 1996). At present, Conostegia contains about 40 species (Schnell, 1996; Mabberley, 1997), although over 100 names have been applied to the genus in the past. However, the elevated number of species has been explained as a probable misinterpretation of the intraspecific variation that occurs in some species (Schnell, 1996). The name Conostegia , which is derived from the Greek words κονοσ = cone and στeγοσ = roof, was chosen by D. Don (1823) for grouping species characterized by flowers having their sepals fused into a cone-shaped calyptra (Fig 9.1 A–D). Despite the fact that a calyptrate calyx is present in other genera of the Melastomataceae, such as Bellucia, Blakea , Centronia , Henriettea , Llewellynia , Miconia and Pternandra (Schnell, 1996; Penneys et al., 2010), the peculiar calyx of Conostegia has long been regarded as a useful character for segregating Conostegia from other non-calyptrate species of Melastomataceae (Don, 1823). Species of Conostegia are immediately recognizable by the character combination of terminal inflorescences, flowers often multistaminate, calyx clearly circumscissily dehiscent at anthesis, anthers isomorphic and unappendaged, ovary inferior and berry fruits (Almeda, 2008).

Macro- and micro-morphological characters, molecular nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer and chloroplast trn L-F intron-spacer data confirmed the hybrid status of Oreocharis × heterandra . Cytological studies showed that the parental species and the hybrid possess 2n =34 chromosomes, suggesting that chromosome translocations, not dysploid or ploidy level changes, are the cause of the high hybrid sterility. Recurrent reciprocal hybridisation between its parental species O. argyreia and O. magnidens in an area of secondary contact is apparently responsible for the persistent presence of the hybrids, though at low levels. As a consequence the name Oreocharis heterandra has to be changed to Oreocharis × heterandra .

Based on molecular studies, the small Chinese genus Petrocodon (two species and one variety) has been recently enlarged to include the monotypic genera Calcareoboea, Paralagarosolen and Tengia. It is shown here that the (6-7) species of Lagarosolen, the monotypic Dolicholoma, a few species of Didymocarpus, and a number of new species that have recently been published (but not formally described) under Petrocodon and Lagarosolen should be included in this genus. This raises the size of the genus from five to around 20 species. With respect to the floral diversity (corolla form, size, and coloration; with the exception of Tengia, the androecium is always diandrous) and inferred pollination syndromes (different forms of melittophily, ornithophily, psycho- and/or sphingophily), Petrocodon represents one of the most varied genera of Old World Gesneriaceae, comparable to some New World genera.
