Understanding the evolution of solute concentration gradients underpins the prediction of porous media processes limited by mass transfer. Here, we present the development of a mathematical model that describes the dissolution of spherical bubbles in two-dimensional regular pore networks. The model is solved numerically for lattices with up to 169 bubbles by evaluating the role of pore network connectivity, vacant lattice sites and the initial bubble size distribution. In dense lattices, diffusive shielding prolongs the average dissolution time of the lattice, and the strength of the phenomenon depends on the network connectivity. The extension of the final dissolution time relative to the unbounded (bulk) case follows the power-law function, $${B^k/\ell }$$ B k / ℓ , where the constant $$\ell$$ ℓ is the inter-bubble spacing, B is the number of bubbles, and the exponent k depends on the network connectivity. The solute concentration field is both the consequence and a factor affecting bubble dissolution or growth. The geometry of the pore network perturbs the inward propagation of the dissolution front and can generate vacant sites within the bubble lattice. This effect is enhanced by increasing the lattice size and decreasing the network connectivity, yielding strongly nonuniform solute concentration fields. Sparse bubble lattices experience decreased collective effects, but they feature a more complex evolution, because the solute concentration field is nonuniform from the outset.

Pore network models (PNMs) offer a computationally efficient way to analyse transport in porous media. Their effectiveness depends on how well they represent the topology and geometry of real pore systems, for example as imaged by X-ray CT. The performance of two popular algorithms, maximum ball and watershed, is evaluated for three porous systems: an idealised medium with known pore throat properties and two rocks with different morphogenesis—carbonate and sandstone. It is demonstrated that while the extracted PNM simulates simple flow (permeability) with acceptable accuracy, their topological and geometric properties are significantly different. This suggests that such PNM may not serve more complex studies, such as reactive/convective transport of contaminants or bacteria, and further research is necessary to improve the interpretation of real pore spaces with networks. Linear topology–geometry relations are derived and presented to stimulate development of more realistic PNM.

CO2 sequestration in saline aquifers and hydrocarbon reservoirs is a potential strategy to reduce CO2 concentration in the atmosphere, enhance hydrocarbon production, or extract geothermal heat. CO2 injection is considerably influenced by the interfacial interactions, capillary forces and viscous forces. Any change in the subsurface conditions of pressure, temperature, and salinity is likely to have an impact on the interfacial interactions, capillary forces and viscous forces, which, in turn, will have an influence on the injection, migration, displacement, and CO2 storage capacity. In this study, unsteady-state immiscible experimental investigations have been performed to explore the impact of fluid pressure, temperature, salinity (brine concentration and valency) and injection rate on the dynamic pressure evolution and displacement efficiency when CO2 as a liquid phase is injected into a water-saturated sandstone core sample. This study also highlights the impact of capillary forces and viscous forces on the two-phase flow properties and shows when capillary forces or viscous forces are dominant. The results reveal a moderate to considerable impact for the fluid pressure, temperature, injection rate, and salinity on the differential pressure profile, water recovery (WR), endpoint CO2 relative permeability (KrCO2), and cumulative produced volumes. Overall, increasing fluid pressure, CO2 injection rate and salinity (brine concentration and valency) cause an increase in the differential pressure profile; the highest increase occurred with the injection rate. In general, increasing temperature caused a reduction in the differential pressure profile. The WR is in range of around 61.6–69.3% while the KrCO2 is in range of 0.112–0.203, depending on the parameters investigated. Increasing fluid pressure and injection rate caused an increase in the WR; the highest increase occurred with the injection rate. On the other hand, increasing temperature and salinity caused a decrease in the WR; the highest reduction occurred with salinity. Nevertheless, the increase in fluid pressure, temperature, injection rate and salinity led to a reduction in the KrCO2; the highest reduction occurred with increasing temperature whilst the lowest occurred with increasing fluid pressure. The cumulative produced volumes decreased with fluid pressure and salinity but showed no noticeable change with temperature and injection rate. The capillary forces have less impact on the differential pressure profiles than viscous forces when fluid pressure, temperature and injection rate increase but the capillary forces show more impact as salinity increase.

We predict waterflood displacement on a pore-by-pore basis using pore network modelling. The pore structure is captured by a high-resolution image. We then use an energy balance applied to images of the displacement to assign an average contact angle, and then modify the local pore-scale contact angles in the model about this mean to match the observed displacement sequence. Two waterflooding experiments on oil-wet rocks are analysed where the displacement sequence was imaged using time-resolved synchrotron imaging. In both cases the capillary pressure in the model matches the experimentally obtained values derived from the measured interfacial curvature. We then predict relative permeability for the full saturation range. Using the optimised contact angles distributed randomly in space has little effect on the predicted capillary pressures and relative permeabilities, indicating that spatial correlation in wettability is not significant in these oil-wet samples. The calibrated model can be used to predict properties outside the range of conditions considered in the experiment.

Underground hydrogen storage (UHS) in initially brine-saturated deep porous rocks is a promising large-scale energy storage technology, due to hydrogen’s high specific energy capacity and the high volumetric capacity of aquifers. Appropriate selection of a feasible and safe storage site vitally depends on understanding hydrogen transport characteristics in the subsurface. Unfortunately there exist no robust experimental analyses in the literature to properly characterise this complex process. As such, in this work, we present a systematic pore-scale modelling study to quantify the crucial reservoir-scale functions of relative permeability and capillary pressure and their dependencies on fluid and reservoir rock conditions. To conduct a conclusive study, in the absence of sufficient experimental data, a rigorous sensitivity analysis has been performed to quantify the impacts of uncertain fluid and rock properties on these upscaled functions. The parameters are varied around a base-case, which is obtained through matching to the existing experimental study. Moreover, cyclic hysteretic multiphase flow is also studied, which is a relevant aspect for cyclic hydrogen-brine energy storage projects. The present study applies pore-scale analysis to predict the flow of hydrogen in storage formations, and to quantify the sensitivity to the micro-scale characteristics of contact angle (i.e., wettability) and porous rock structure.

Liquid-gas two-phase flow in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of proton exchange membrane fuel cells is investigated using an ex-situ experimental setup. The mass transport phenomena is investigated in carbon paper and carbon cloth GDLs and at different compressions. Water percolation within the plane of the GDL is visualized with a CCD camera while its injection pressure is measured. Similarly, air percolation within the plane of GDL samples which were initially saturated with water is investigated. Experiments are conducted for the three flow regimes of stable displacement, capillary fingering, and viscous fingering. Images are analyzed to obtain the normalized wetted area. It is observed that while the GDL compression directly affects normalized wetted area for stable displacement and viscous fingering flow regimes, it has no impact on this parameter for capillary fingering flow regime. For stable displacement flow regime and for both carbon paper and carbon cloth samples, water percolation pressure increases with GDL compression. However, the water percolation pressure data obtained for capillary fingering flow regime does not suggest any discernible trend as a function of GDL compression. The findings in this study can be used to validate percolation models proposed by different schemes such as pore-network models.

Achieving proper water management in proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is an ongoing challenge. Current quantitative treatments of two-phase flow in fuel-cell diffusion media (DM) often assume saturation-dependent transport relations. However, these relations are not validated for the complex physical and chemical structure of the DM, and therefore lack predictive capabilities. Characterization of DM and their water-uptake profiles enables a fundamental understanding of the driving forces behind flooding and facilitates targeted improvement in the form of physically representative simulations. The objective of this work is to characterize, analyze, and explain the wettability and water-uptake behavior of fuel-cell components, namely the DM and catalyst layer (CL), based on manufacturing parameters and physiochemical structure, e.g., fiber structure and hydrophobic treatment of the DM, and chemical composition and crack formation of the CL. A combination of capillary-pressure saturation (PC-S) measurements, visual-imaging, and physical-characterization techniques is used to quantify water-uptake behavior and identify causal factors. On an intuitive level, Pc-S curves show the propensity of a material to uptake or eject water. The PC-S curves demonstrate that DM are neutrally wetting materials that neither spontaneously imbibe nor eject water. DM from various manufacturers exhibit signature features that can be explained partially by visual differences in fiber structure and deposition of a hydrophobic agent, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Although the initial addition of PTFE improves hydrophobicity of the sample, increasing PTFE loading does not show significant improvements and instead, as evidenced by pore-size-distribution (PSD) measurements, decreases porosity. Systematic studies of the PSDs demonstrate the level of variation that exists within DM and between DM produced by different manufacturers. To date, there have not been data on the wettability and water-uptake behavior of CLs. Isolated CLs were made in-house and commercially and tested for their PC-S response. CLs have the propensity to be highly hydrophilic and require capillary pressures as low as -80 kPa to eject water. The presence of Pt or surface cracks increases hydrophilicity. These findings suggest that saturation in CLs, especially cracked CLs, may exacerbate poor transport.Lastly, this work includes early-stage development of a limiting-current measurement that can be used to calculate effective transport properties as a function of saturation. Results indicate that the method is valid, and different DM have higher transport depending on the operating condition. The technique is yet in a formative stage, and this work includes advice and recommendations for operation and design improvements.

Multiphase flow in porous media is strongly influenced by the wettability of the system, which affects the arrangement of the interfaces of different phases residing in the pores. We present a method for estimating the effective contact angle, which quantifies the wettability and controls the local capillary pressure within the complex pore space of natural rock samples, based on the physical constraint of constant curvature of the interface between two fluids. This algorithm is able to extract a large number of measurements from a single rock core, resulting in a characteristic distribution of effective in situ contact angle for the system, that is modelled as a truncated Gaussian probability density distribution. The method is first validated on synthetic images, where the exact angle is known analytically; then the results obtained from measurements within the pore space of rock samples imaged at a resolution of a few microns are compared to direct manual assessment. Finally the method is applied to X-ray micro computed tomography (micro-CT) scans of two Ketton cores after waterflooding, that display water-wet and mixed-wet behaviour. The resulting distribution of in situ contact angles is characterized in terms of a mixture of truncated Gaussian densities.

We observed features of pore scale fluid distributions during oil-brine displacement in a mixed-wet sandstone rock sample. High-resolution X-ray imaging was used in combination with differential pressure measurements to measure relative permeability and capillary pressure simultaneously during a steady-state waterflood experiment on a sample of Bentheimer sandstone 51.6 mm long and 6.1 mm in diameter. After prolonged contact with crude oil to alter the surface wettability, a refined oil and formation brine were injected through the sample at a fixed total flow rate but in a sequence of increasing brine fractional flows. When the pressure across the system stabilized, X-ray tomographic images were taken. The images were used to compute saturation, interfacial area, curvature and contact angle. From this information relative permeability and capillary pressure were determined as functions of saturation. We compare our results with a previously published experiment with strongly water-wet conditions. The oil relative permeability was lower than in the water-wet case, although a smaller residual oil saturation, of approximately 0.11, was obtained, since the oil remained connected in layers in the altered wettability rock. The capillary pressure was slightly negative and ten times smaller in magnitude than a similar water-wet rock, and approximately constant over a wide range of intermediate saturation. The oil-brine interfacial area was also largely constant in this saturation range. The measured static contact angles had an average of $80^{\circ}$ with a standard deviation of $17^{\circ}$. We observed that the oil-brine interfaces were not flat, as may be expected for a very low mean curvature, but had two approximately equal, but opposite, curvatures in orthogonal directions. These interfaces were approximately minimal surfaces which allow efficient displacement and imply well-connected phases. Saddle-shaped menisci swept through the pore space at a constant capillary pressure and with an almost fixed area, removing most of the oil.

International audience; Wetting properties and capillary parameters are of first interest for composite and especially biocomposite manufacturing, interface compatibility between reinforcement and matrix, and durability. Few studies have been dedicated in literature to continuous textile fibers and uncured liquid resins wetting properties, and particularly the methods used may be ambiguous, revealing a wide dispersion in results. In this work a reliable method is proposed to determine properly the wetting properties of fibers and some resins commonly used for composite applications. Firstly, a procedure to characterize dispersive and polar components of surface tension for an epoxy and a partially bio-based resin with a tensiometer is proposed. Then a new method was applied on single fibers of semi-synthetic cellulose (viscose), which allows deriving representative values of contact angles from a series of measurements, minimizing the measurement scatter even when using a conventional tensiometer. Resin components and contact angles between cellulose fibers and test liquids, including resins, led to characterize dispersive and polar components of fiber surface energy.

Hypothesis: Capillary-dominated multiphase flow in porous materials is strongly affected by the pore walls' wettability. Recent micro-computed tomography (mCT) studies found unexpectedly wide contact angle distributions measured on static fluid distributions inside the pores. We hypothesize that analysis on time-resolved mCT data of fluid invasion events may be more directly relevant to the fluid dynamics. Experiment: We approximated receding contact angles locally in time and space on time-resolved mCT datasets of drainage in a glass bead pack and a limestone. Whenever a meniscus suddenly entered one or more pores, geometric and thermodynamically consistent contact angles in the surrounding pores were measured in the time step just prior to the displacement event. We introduced a new force-based contact angle, defined to recover the measured capillary pressure in the invaded pore throat prior to interface movement. Findings: Unlike the classical method, the new geometric and force-based contact angles followed plausible, narrower distributions and were mutually consistent. We were unable to obtain credible results with the thermodynamically consistent method, likely because of sensitivity to common imaging artifacts and neglecting dissipation. Time-resolved mCT analysis can yield a more appropriate wettability characterization for pore scale models, despite the need to further reduce image analysis uncertainties. (C) 2020 The Authors. Spontaneous imbibition is a process occurring in a porous medium which describes wetting phase replacing nonwetting phase spontaneously due to capillary forces. This process is conventionally investigated by standardized, well-established spontaneous imbibition tests. In these tests, for instance, a rock sample is surrounded by wetting fluid. The following cumulative production of nonwetting phase versus time is used as a qualitative measure for wettability. However, these test results are difficult to interpret, because many rocks do not show a homogeneous but a mixed wettability in which the wetting preference of a rock varies from location to location. Moreover, during the test the flow regime typically changes from countercurrent to cocurrent flow and no phase pressure or pressure drop can be recorded. To help interpretation, we complement Darcy-scale production curves with X-ray imaging to describe the differences in imbibition processes between water-wet and mixed-wet systems. We found that the formation of a spontaneous imbibition front occurs only for water-wet systems; mixed-wet systems show localized imbibition events only. The asymmetry of the front depends on the occurrence of preferred production sites, which influences interpretation. Fluid layers on the outside of mixed-wet samples increase connectivity of the drained phase and the effect of buoyancy on spontaneous imbibition. The wider implication of our study is the demonstration of the capability of benchtop laboratory equipment to image a full Darcy-scale experiment while at the same time obtaining pore-scale information, resolving the natural length and time scale of the underlying processes.

In situ wettability measurements in hydrocarbon reservoir rocks have only been possible recently. The purpose of this work is to present a protocol to characterize the complex wetting conditions of hydrocarbon reservoir rock using pore-scale three-dimensional X-ray imaging at subsurface conditions. In this work, heterogeneous carbonate reservoir rocks, extracted from a very large producing oil field, have been used to demonstrate the protocol. The rocks are saturated with brine and oil and aged over three weeks at subsurface conditions to replicate the wettability conditions that typically exist in hydrocarbon reservoirs (known as mixed-wettability). After the brine injection, high-resolution three-dimensional images (2 µm/voxel) are acquired and then processed and segmented. To calculate the distribution of the contact angle, which defines the wettability, the following steps are performed. First, fluid-fluid and fluid-rock surfaces are meshed. The surfaces are smoothed to remove voxel artefacts, and in situ contact angles are measured at the three-phase contact line throughout the whole image. The main advantage of this method is its ability to characterize in situ wettability accounting for pore-scale rock properties, such as rock surface roughness, rock chemical composition, and pore size. The in situ wettability is determined rapidly at hundreds of thousands of points. The method is limited by the segmentation accuracy and X-ray image resolution. This protocol could be used to characterize the wettability of other complex rocks saturated with different fluids and at different conditions for a variety of applications. For example, it could help in determining the optimal wettability that could yield an extra oil recovery (i.e., designing brine salinity accordingly to obtain higher oil recovery) and to find the most efficient wetting conditions to trap more CO2 in subsurface formations.

Significance In many important processes that control CO2 storage in aquifers, oil recovery, and gas exchange in leaves, for instance, flow is controlled by the interaction of immiscible fluids with a rough surface. We use micrometer-resolution X-ray imaging to look inside millimeter-sized porous structures, obtaining millions of measurements of contact angle and interfacial curvature. We quantify the relationship between surface roughness and wettability. Rougher surfaces are associated with lower contact angles and higher interfacial curvatures. We identify a distinct mixed-wet state where two fluid phases remain connected over a wide range of saturation. This state can be designed to improve oil recovery or the performance of fuel cells, catalysts, and other porous materials., A quantitative in situ characterization of the impact of surface roughness on wettability in porous media is currently lacking. We use reservoir condition micrometer-resolution X-ray tomography combined with automated methods for the measurement of contact angle, interfacial curvature, and surface roughness to examine fluid/fluid and fluid/solid interfaces inside a porous material. We study oil and water in the pore space of limestone from a giant producing oilfield, acquiring millions of measurements of curvature and contact angle on three millimeter-sized samples. We identify a distinct wetting state with a broad distribution of contact angle at the submillimeter scale with a mix of water-wet and water-repellent regions. Importantly, this state allows both fluid phases to flow simultaneously over a wide range of saturation. We establish that, in media that are largely water wet, the interfacial curvature does not depend on solid surface roughness, quantified as the local deviation from a plane. However, where there has been a significant wettability alteration, rougher surfaces are associated with lower contact angles and higher interfacial curvature. The variation of both contact angle and interfacial curvature increases with the local degree of roughness. We hypothesize that this mixed wettability may also be seen in biological systems to facilitate the simultaneous flow of water and gases; furthermore, wettability-altering agents could be used in both geological systems and material science to design a mixed-wetting state with optimal process performance.

In this work, we analyze the characterization of drainage multiphase flow properties on heterogeneous rock cores using a rich experimental data set and mm‐m scale numerical simulations. Along with routine multiphase flow properties, 3‐D submeter scale capillary pressure heterogeneity is characterized by combining experimental observations and numerical calibration, resulting in a 3‐D numerical model of the rock core. The uniqueness and predictive capability of the numerical models are evaluated by accurately predicting the experimentally measured relative permeability of N2—DI water and CO2—brine systems in two distinct sandstone rock cores across multiple fractional flow regimes and total flow rates. The numerical models are used to derive equivalent relative permeabilities, which are upscaled functions incorporating the effects of submeter scale capillary pressure. The functions are obtained across capillary numbers which span four orders of magnitude, representative of the range of flow regimes that occur in subsurface CO2 injection. Removal of experimental boundary artifacts allows the derivation of equivalent functions which are characteristic of the continuous subsurface. We also demonstrate how heterogeneities can be reorientated and restructured to efficiently estimate flow properties in rock orientations differing from the original core sample. This analysis shows how combined experimental and numerical characterization of rock samples can be used to derive equivalent flow properties from heterogeneous rocks.

Pore-scale two-phase flow modeling is an important technology to study a rock's relative permeability behavior. To investigate if these models are predictive, the calculated pore-scale fluid distributions which determine the relative permeability need to be validated. In this work, we introduce a methodology to quantitatively compare models to experimental fluid distributions in flow experiments visualized with microcomputed tomography. First, we analyzed five repeated drainage-imbibition experiments on a single sample. In these experiments, the exact fluid distributions were not fully repeatable on a pore-by-pore basis, while the global properties of the fluid distribution were. Then two fractional flow experiments were used to validate a quasistatic pore network model. The model correctly predicted the fluid present in more than 75% of pores and throats in drainage and imbibition. To quantify what this means for the relevant global properties of the fluid distribution, we compare the main flow paths and the connectivity across the different pore sizes in the modeled and experimental fluid distributions. These essential topology characteristics matched well for drainage simulations, but not for imbibition. This suggests that the pore-filling rules in the network model we used need to be improved to make reliable predictions of imbibition. The presented analysis illustrates the potential of our methodology to systematically and robustly test two-phase flow models to aid in model development and calibration.

Arterial compliance (C) is related to the elasticity, size, and geometrical distribution of arteries. Compliance is a determinant of the load that impedes ventricular ejection. Measuring compliance is difficult, particularly in the pulmonary circulation in which resistive and compliant vessels overlap. Comparing different methods for quantification of compliance to a method that involves a continuous flow might help to identify the optimal method. Pulmonary arterial compliance was computed in six pigs based on the stroke volume to pulse pressure ratio, diastolic decay exponential fitting, area method, and the pulse pressure method (PPM). Compliance measurements were compared to those obtained under continuous flow conditions through a right ventricular bypass (Heartware Inc. Miami Lakes, FL, USA). Compliance was computed for various flows using diastolic decay exponential fitting after an abrupt interruption of the pump. Under the continuous flow conditions, resistance (R) was a decreasing function of the flow, and the fitting to P = e-t/RC yielded a pulmonary time constant (RC) of 2.06 s (± 0.48). Compliance was an increasing function of flow. Steady flow inter-method comparisons of compliance under pulsatile flow conditions showed large discrepancies and values (7.23 ± 4.47 mL/mmHg) which were lower than those obtained under continuous flow conditions (10.19 ± 1 0.31 mL/mmHg). Best agreement with steady flow measurements is obtained with the diastolic decay method. Resistance and compliance are both flow-dependent and are inversely related in the pulmonary circulation. A generalized network extraction workflow is developed for parameterizing three-dimensional (3D) images of porous media. The aim of this workflow is to reduce the uncertainties in conventional network modeling predictions introduced due to the oversimplification of complex pore geometries encountered in natural porous media. The generalized network serves as a coarse discretization of the surface generated from a medial-axis transformation of the 3D image. This discretization divides the void space into individual pores and then subdivides each pore into sub-elements called half-throat connections. Each half-throat connection is further segmented into corners by analyzing the medial axis curves of its axial plane. The parameters approximating each corner---corner angle, volume, and conductivity---are extracted at different discretization levels, corresponding to different wetting layer thickness and local capillary pressures during multiphase flow simulations. Conductivities are calculated using direct single-phase flow simulation so that the network can reproduce the single-phase flow permeability of the underlying image exactly. We first validate the algorithm by using it to discretize synthetic angular pore geometries and show that the network model reproduces the corner angles accurately. We then extract network models from micro-CT images of porous rocks and show that the network extraction preserves macroscopic properties, the permeability and formation factor, and the statistics of the micro-CT images.

Wettability is an important factor which controls the displacement of immiscible fluids in permeable media, with far reaching implications for storage of CO2 in deep saline aquifers, fuel cells, oil recovery, and for the remediation of oil contaminated soils. Considering the paradigmatic case of random piles of spherical beads, fluid front morphologies emerging during slow immiscible displacement are investigated in real time by X-ray micro–tomography and quantitatively compared with model predictions. Controlled by the wettability of the bead matrix two distinct displacement patterns are found. A compact front morphology emerges if the invading fluid wets the beads while a fingered morphology is found for non–wetting invading fluids, causing the residual amount of defending fluid to differ by one order of magnitude. The corresponding crossover between these two regimes in terms of the advancing contact angle is governed by an interplay of wettability and pore geometry and can be predicted on the basis of a purely quasi–static consideration of local instabilities that control the progression of the invading interface.

A methodology is presented to determine the saturation curve of a resin/glass fabric system, during infiltration in a transparent mould under constant flow rate. Video acquisitions are transformed by image analysis into saturation level versus position and time, and coupled to inlet pressure measurements. A numerical multiphase flow model is then used to simulate the infiltration for various combinations of drainage curve parameters. The numerical parameters to describe the saturation and relative permeability are determined by response surface optimization. The drainage curve and relative permeability equations determined at one time are shown to adequately describe the entire injection process, and to be flow-rate dependent. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Several centrifugation scenarios enabling the determination of soil parameters for saturated-unsaturated flow in porous media are presented, investigated, and discussed. Only global characteristics of the infiltration process in a sample are used, so that only simple, noninvasive measurements are performed. The characteristics can be transient measurements of the rotational momentum, or of the gravitational center, or of the water amount injected and expelled from the sample. No information about the saturation or the head distribution in the sample is required. This setup is different from the common multioutflow experiments. We give numerical proof that this method allows for fast determination of soil parameters in comparison to traditional measurements based on equilibrium conditions. The mathematical model of infiltration is represented by Richards' strongly nonlinear and degenerate equation expressed in terms of soil parameters in the van Genuchten-Mualem ansatz. The parameter identification process is realized in an iterative way applying the Levenberg-Marquardt method. Numerical experiments support the efficiency of the analyzed method and allow one to identify the optimal centrifugation scenario for imbibition and drainage to be applied when using global characteristics.

In this paper we present a numerical model describing the heat and mass transport during the cooking of chicken meat in industrial tunnels. The mass transport is driven by gradients in the swelling pressure, which is described by the Flory-Rehner theory, which relates to the water holding capacity (WHC). For cooking temperatures up to boiling point and practical relevant cooking times, the model renders good prediction of heat and mass transport and the total loss of moisture. We have shown that for cooking temperatures above boiling point, the model has to be extended with the dynamic growth of capillary water (drip) channels. Furthermore, we discuss that the Flory-Rehner theory provides the proper physical basis for describing the change of the WHC by a wide variety of factors like salt and pH. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The main objective of this research was to enhance our understanding of and obtain quantitative relation between Darcy-scale adsorption parameters and pore-scale flow and adsorption parameters, using a three-dimensional multidirectional pore-network model. This helps to scale up from a simplified but reasonable representation of microscopic physics to the scale of interest in practical applications. This upscaling is performed in two stages: (i) from local scale to the effective pore scale and (ii) from effective pore scale to the scale of a core. The first stage of this upscaling from local scale to effective pore scale has been reported in an earlier manuscript. There, we found relationships between local-scale parameters (such as equilibrium adsorption coefficient, k d, and Peclet number, Pe) and effective parameters (such as attachment coefficient, k att, and detachment coefficient, k det). Here, we perform upscaling by means of a three-dimensional multidirectional network model, which is composed of a large number of interconnected pore bodies (represented by spheres) and pore throats (represented by tubes). Upscaled transport parameters are obtained by fitting the solution of classical advectiondispersion equation with adsorption to the average concentration breakthrough curves at the outlet of the pore network. This procedure has resulted in relationships for upscaled adsorption parameters in terms of the microscale adsorption coefficient and flow velocity.

Using transparent microfluidic cells to study the two-phase properties of a synthetic porous medium, we establish that the interfacial area per volume between nonwetting and wetting fluids lifts the ambiguity associated with the hysteretic relationship between capillary pressure and saturation in porous media. The interface between the nonwetting and wetting phases is composed of two subsets: one with a unique curvature determined by the capillary pressure, and the other with a distribution of curvatures dominated by disjoining pressure. This work provides experimental support for recent theoretical predictions that the capillary-dominated subset plays a role analogous to a state variable. Any comprehensive description of multiphase flow properties must include this interfacial area with the traditional variables of pressure and fluid saturation.

Contact angle is a principal control of the flow of multiple fluid phases through porous media; however its measurement on other than flat surfaces remains a challenge. A new method is presented for the mea- surement of the contact angle between immiscible fluids at the pore scale at reservoir conditions (10 MPa and 50 C) inside a quarry limestone through the use of X-ray microtomography. It is applied to a super- critical CO2-brine-carbonate system by resampling the micro-CT data onto planes orthogonal to the con- tact lines, allowing for vectors to be traced along the grain surface and the CO2-brine interface. A distri- bution of contact angles ranging from 35 to 55 is observed, indicating that the CO2-brine-carbonate system is weakly water-wet. This range of contact angles can be understood as the result of contact angle hysteresis and surface heterogeneity on a range of length scales. In this work, we present a numerical treatment for the model of two-phase flow in porous media including specific interfacial area. For numerical discretization we use the cell-centered finite difference (CCFD) method based on the shifting-matrices method which can reduce the time-consuming operations. A new iterative implicit algorithm has been developed to solve the problem under consideration. All advection and advection-like terms that appear in saturation equation and interfacial area equation are treated using upwind schemes. Selected simulation results such as pc–Sw–awn surface, capillary pressure, saturation and specific interfacial area with various values of model parameters have been introduced. The simulation results show a good agreement with those in the literature using either pore network modeling or Darcy scale modeling.

The drainage process in the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is investigated with an ex situ experimental approach. The drainage process is investigated for stable displacement, capillary fingering, and viscous fingering flow regimes. Liquid water and air percolation within the plane of the GDL is visualized with a CCD camera and at different GDL compressions. Experiments were carried out for carbon paper and carbon cloth samples to visualize water and air percolations. The percolation images are shown at four stages of percolation, defined by a nondimensional time scale. In addition, images are analyzed to obtain the wetted area as well as the wetted perimeter of percolations. The in-plane percolation characteristic length, Gamma, is defined as the ratio of the wetted area to the wetted perimeter. Image processing reveals that Gamma decreases from stable displacement to capillary fingering flow regime, confirming the formation of multiple fingers in the capillary fingering flow regime which increase the wetted perimeter. This in-plane percolation characteristic length was even smaller for viscous fingering flow regime, an indication of multiple conduits and fingers formed during the percolation of air. The data gathered in this study can be used to validate pore-network models for fluid percolation within a porous media.
