Abstract

As the world's population grows and climatic conditions worsen, the world's current resources are rapidly depleting. Human behavior exacerbates this adverse situation. One of these behaviors is traditional eating habits. A traditional diet that consists of animal-based proteins consumes more resources and pollutes the environment to a greater extent. The traditional diet, which consists of mostly animal-based proteins, may turn towards plant-based proteins. In addition to plant-based proteins, in recent years scientists have focused on exploring alternative protein sources that do not pollute the environment and require fewer resources. Plant-based proteins, algae, insect-based proteins, and cultured meat have all been identified in the literature as alternative protein sources that may be consumed alone (in dry or concentrated form) or added to foods. While alternative protein sources are still being developed, the consumer's opinion on these sources is being assessed. So, in this review, consumers' knowledge, acceptance, and attitude to alternative protein sources are discussed. Data shows that plant-based protein sources, including algae, are now widely claimed to be more accepted than traditional protein sources. It has also been established that most individuals are prejudiced toward insect-based protein and cultured meat due to lack of sufficient information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13. Low free T3 level may predict the severity of acute pancreatitis

Abstract

ABSTRACTObjectivesTo demonstrate that deterioration in thyroid function tests can serve as an indicator of severity and prognosis in acute pancreatitis despite a healthy thyroid gland.MethodsThis study is a retrospective, single-center study. Patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis between May 2020 and June 2021 were evaluated. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed and classified according to the 2012 revised Atlanta criteria. Patients were categorized into Non-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome and euthyroid groups and compared in terms of biochemical parameters and scoring systems such as Ranson, Glasgow, Balthazar and BISAP scores.ResultsA total of 152 patients were included in the study. Eighty-three patients (54%) were euthyroid, with free triiodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine (T4), and Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels within normal limits. Sixty-nine patients (46%) had Non-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome with low serum free T3 levels and low/normal TSH levels. As expected, free T3 was significantly lower in the Non-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome group than in the euthyroid group (1.5 ± 0.04 vs 2.6 ± 0.04, respectively, p < 0.0001). In the Non-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome group, Ranson score (3.35 ± 0.2 vs 2.11 ± 0.18 p < 0.0001), Glasgow (2.4 ± 0.2 vs 1.3 ± 0.1, p < 0.0001), Atlanta (p = 0.007), and Balthazar (2.1 ± 0.1 vs 1.4 ± 0.1, p = 0.001) scores were significantly higher than euthyroid group.ConclusionNon-Thyroidal Illness Syndrome provides insight into the prognosis of acute pancreatitis. Free T3 values are a significant parameter that may indicate the prognosis of acute pancreatitis. We believe that free T3 could be incorporated into an ideal scoring system in a disease such as acute pancreatitis, where early determination of prognosis is known to significantly reduce mortality.

14. Networked misogyny beyond the digital: the violent devaluation of women journalists' labor and bodies in Turkey's masculine authoritarian regime.

Abstract

Following the conservative Turkish government's political-economic capture of the news media, educated and pro-feminist women journalists have migrated online. Despite having more publicity across platforms, they face immediate prosecution based on the tweet of an anonymous troll, an informant citizen or a government official. While this is a common case of networked misogyny, inspired by Liz Kelly's concept of the continuum of sexual violence, we argue that networked misogyny against women journalists is not simply technological but rather both interconnected across different spaces (online manosphere, masculine newsrooms, and authoritarian state) and intersectional feeding from nationalism, class, and anti-Western sentiments. This intersectionality renders networked misogyny against Turkey's journalists different from liberal contexts because it operates not through illegality but suspicion (of terrorism, treason). Our focus on interconnections and intersectionality allows for theorizing networked misogyny beyond the digital, genders current perspectives on authoritarianism and reframes networked misogyny as a violent war targeting women's intellectual labor and public visibility, both significant threats to authoritarian regimes across the globe. The interconnected and intersectional stories of networked misogyny from Turkey point to how fighting against this form of violence is also a fight against the post-truth regimes of authoritarianism and fight for democracy. Abstract

Multiple Gateways (GWs) provide network connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in a Wide Area Network (WAN). The End Nodes (ENs) can connect to any GW by discovering and acquiring its periodic beacons. This provides GW diversity, improving coverage area. However, simultaneous periodic beacon transmissions among nearby GWs lead to interference and collisions. In this study, the impact of such intra-network interference is analyzed to determine the maximum number of GWs that can coexist. The paper presents a new collision model that considers the combined effects of the Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical (PHY) layers. The model takes into account the partial overlap durations and relative power of all colliding events. It also illustrates the relationship between the collisions and the resulting packet loss rates. A performance evaluation is presented using a combination of analytical and simulation methods, with the former validating the simulation results. The system models are developed from experimental data obtained from field measurements. Numerical results are provided with Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying (GFSK) modulation. This paper provides guidance on selecting GFSK modulation parameters for low bit-rate and narrow-bandwidth IoT applications. The analysis and simulation results show that larger beacon intervals and frequency hopping help in reducing beacon loss rates, at the cost of larger beacon acquisition latency. On the flip side, the gateway discovery latency reduces with increasing GW density, thanks to an abundance of beacons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objectives: Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels play an important role in the diagnosis, screening, and monitoring of treatment in diabetes. The aim of our study is to determine whether there is a relationship between HbA1c levels and age and gender in Turkish adults who have not been diagnosed with diabetes.Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 6776 Turkish adults without diabetes. Cross-sectional analyzes of A1C levels were performed between different age and gender categories. In statistical analysis, t-test, linear regression analysis, one-way ANOVA analysis, and LSD post hoc were used.Results: HbA1c levels in the individuals examined by dividing into different age groups increased with age in all groups. In our study, HbA1c levels were significantly higher in males than females (p < 0.001) in all groups, especially between the ages of 30-49, and were positively associated with age for males and females. There was a positive correlation between HbA1c and age in both men and women aged 30-49 years (P < 0.05). In the HbA1c ≥ 6.5 group, HbA1c levels gradually decreased with age in both genders, and no significant effect of age on Hb1Ac level was detected (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Our results showed that it is important to evaluate the effects of age and gender when using HbA1c levels in the diagnosis, screening, and treatment of diabetes, especially in the young and middle-aged population. Applying this situation to daily practice may reduce the misdiagnosis of diabetes in elderly patients, overtreatment of diabetes, and its associated risks.K

Amaç: Koronavirüs hastalığı (COVID-19) ve hastalığın getirdiği anksiyete ile beraber bireyler sağlıklı beslenmeye daha fazla ilgi göstermeye başlamıştır. Bu çalışmada, COVID-19 salgınından etkilenen bireylerin anksiyete düzeylerini belirlemek ve anksiyete varlığının ortoreksiya nervoza ile ilişkisini değerlendirmek amaçlanmıştır.Yöntem: Bu kesitsel çalışma çevrimiçi olarak hazırlanmış bir anket yardımıyla gönüllü, yaş ortalamaları sırasıyla 34,50 ± 6,50 ve 38,50 ± 11,50 yıl olan 189 kadın ve 147 erkek katılımcı ile tamamlanmıştır. Ankette bireylerin antropometrik ölçümleri ve bazı sosyo-demografik özellikleri değerlendirilirken; Koronavirüs Anksiyete Ölçeği (KAÖ) ile COVID-19 kaynaklı kaygı, Beck Anksiyete Ölçeği (BAÖ) ile genel anksiyete ve ORTO-15 ölçeği ile bireylerin ortorektik eğilimleri saptanmıştır. Araştırma verileri SPSS 24.0 programı ile analiz edilmiştir.Bulgular: Toplam popülasyon değerlendirildiğinde ölçeklerin ortalamaları KAÖ için 1,13 ± 2,42 iken, BAÖ 7,60 ± 9,87 olarak hesaplanmıştır. ORTO-15 puan ortalaması ise 37,44 ± 3,85’tir. Ölçek ortalamaları arasında herhangi bir ilişki saptanmamıştır. 35. Akut Dönem Transfüzyon Reaksiyonlarının Sıklığı: Tek Merkezli Çalışma.

Abstract

Objective: Reactions may occur during or after transfusion of whole blood and blood components. These reactions can lead to a broad spectrum of clinical outcomes, from simple reactions to lifethreatening reactions. The aim of this study is to raise awareness of early recognition, management and prevention of the reactions and showing the frequency of acute period blood transfusion complications. Material and Methods: Our study was carried out in a single center between November 2018 and July 2019 in the Department of Internal Medicine and Hematology of Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital. Transfusion reactions are classified according to Turkish Haematology Association updated guidelines. One thousand patients who were admitted to the internal medicine and hematology clinic for various reasons and were transfused were included in the study. The reasons for hospitalization, blood transfusion indications, date of transfusion, blood product given, cross match compliance, procedures such as irradiation to blood products or leukocyte filtration, history of birth, curettage and abortion, previous blood transfusion and complication history were questioned and recorded. Reactions that developed in the acute period were recorded. Results: Five hundred fifty-three (55.30%) patients were male and 447 (44.70%) were female in the study. Blood transfusion reactions were not observed in 958 (95.80%) patients. Acute reactions were observed in 42 patients. Febrile reaction in 29 (2.9%) patients, allergic reaction in 8 (0.8%) patients, allergic reaction + febrile reaction in 1 (0.1%) patient, hypertension in 2 (0.2%) patients, volume overload in 1 patient (0.1%) and acute hemolytic reaction was observed in 1 (0.1%) patient. Conclusion: In our study, transfusion reaction rates in the acute period were found to be higher than in the literature. Knowing the frequency of complications, detecting them early and managing them appropriately is vital. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Due to the increasing world population today, it is expected that humanity will face the danger of depletion of resources. One of the aims of "Sustainable Nutrition" is to transfer resources to future generations. At the beginning of what can be done for this, traditional nutrition models and eating habits; change with environmental and health-beneficial eating patterns and habits. Additionally, for sustainable nutrition, it is important to find alternative protein sources that nutritional contents are close to animal protein-based foods, accessible and acceptable by everyone. In recent years, the importance of this concept has increased in our country. This review aims to provide comprehensive information to increase the awareness of people about alternative protein sources that can be consumed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions effect in the coming centuries with nutrition models based on plant-based foods, which are the highest sustainability in terms of sustainable nutrition and environmental impact. Abstract

Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews with women garment workers in a low-income neighbourhood of Istanbul, and observations in the ateliers where they worked, this article examines their work experiences in the gendered and sexualised work atmosphere of garment workshops. There are three interrelated levels upon which the gender-related issues emerge in women garment workers’ stories. The first set of discourses portrays young female garment workers in highly sexualised terms, and the second concerns the use of kinship vocabulary and avoidance of impersonal work relationships. That is, women workers’ experiences in capitalist production sites were trivialised and regulated through the sexualisation of their bodies and the deployment of kinship idioms while addressing their role at the workplace. The third level analyses women’s submissive, subversive or contradictory responses to these gendered disciplinary techniques and representations, i.e. the construction of their subjectivities. These three levels point to two things: first, cultural presumptions about marriage, women’s sexuality and reproductive cycles are materialised at the workplace. Second, gendered instantiations of these presumptions in a specific work environment are both informed by their familial roles (such as daughter, wife, mother, widowed) and inform their future reproductive preferences (whether they marry, have a child, get a divorce, etc.). Abstract

Following the coup attempt in Turkey, former Gulenists made appearances on various television channels and disclosed intimate and spectacular information regarding their past activities. We ask: what is the political work of these televised disclosures? In answering this question, we situate the coup within the media event literature and examine the intimate work of these televised disclosures performed as part of a media event. The disclosures we examine were extremely spectacular statements that worked to reconstruct a highly divided and polarized society through an intimate language. Consequently, these television performances had two functions: ideological and affective. First, these disclosures and television shows chose to foreground sensation and therefore mystified the illegal networks that historically prepared the coup. Second, using a language of regret and apology, these disclosures aimed to teach the audience how to be purified and good citizens through a mediated, pedagogical relationship. Within the vulnerable context of a hegemonic crisis, these disclosures intended to form their own publics where citizens were invited to sympathize with those who made mistakes in the past, ultimately aiming to create national unity and reconciliation. Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the side effects of dorzolamide-timolol and brinzolamide-timolol combinations in patients whose treatments were switched from one to the other for any reason and to evaluate patients preference and compliance. A questionnaire about side effects of dorzolamide-timolol and brinzolamide-timolol fix combinations and patients preference was performed to 30 patients followed in Uludag University Ophthalmology Department whose treatment switched from to the other. Thirty patients (9 male, 21 female, aged 14-81 years) filled out the questionnaire. Of 30 patients 66,7 % experienced stinging, 46,7 % experienced redness after instillation dorzolamidetimolol, more frequent than brinzolamide-timolol instillation. (P, Çalışmanın amacı, glokom nedeniyle dorzolamid-timolol ya da brinzolamid-timolol fiks kombinasyonundan birini kullanmakta iken herhan-gi bir sebeple diğer kombinasyona geçilen hastalarda kombinasyonları yan etkiler açısından karşılaştırmak ve hastaların damla tercihini ve tedaviye uyumunu değerlendirmektir. Uludağ Üniversitesi Göz Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı glokom polikliniğinde takip edilen ve dorzolamid-timolol ya da brinzolamid-timolol kombinasyonundan birini kullanırken diğerine geçilen 30 hastaya yan etkilerin ve tercih edilen damlanın sorgulandığı bir anket uygulanmıştır. Yaşları 14-81 arasında değişen 9 erkek, 21 kadın toplam 30 hastaya anket uygulanmıştır. Otuz hastanın % 66,7 si dorzolamid-timolol kullanımı sonrasında batma, % 46,6sı ise kızarıklık tariflemiştir. Bu durum brinzolamid-timolol kullanımı sonrasına oranla daha sıktır ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlıdır. (p değerleri sırasıyla 0,002 ve 0,012) Bulanık görme ise brinzolamid-timolol sonrası daha sık görülmekle birlikte (% 43,3) istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değildir.(p= 0,426) Hastalar genel izlenimleri ve tedaviye uyumları açısından sorgulandığında 30 hastanın 12si (% 40) dorzolamid-timolol, 15i (% 50) brinzolamid-timolol kombinasyonunu tercih etmiştir. Üç hasta (% 10) damlalar arasında fark olmadığını belirtmiştir. Bizim çalışmamızda brinzolamid-timolol kombinasyonu kullanımında daha az batma, kızarıklık ve daha fazla bulanık görme şikayeti görülmüştür. Her iki damla da etkinlik açısından kabul edilebilir tedavi seçenekleri olmakla beraber hastalar tercihlerini farklı yan etkilerden hangisini daha tolere edilebilir bulduğuna göre yapmaktadır.
