Quantum computing has tremendous potential to overcome some of the fundamental limitations present in classical information processing. Yet, today's technological limitations in the quality and scaling prevent exploiting its full potential. Quantum computing based on superconducting quantum processing units (QPUs) is among the most promising approaches towards practical quantum advantage. In this article the basic technological approach of IQM Quantum Computers is described covering both the QPU and the rest of the full-stack quantum computer. In particular, the focus is on a 20-qubit quantum computer featuring the Garnet QPU and its architecture, which we will scale up to 150 qubits. We also present QPU and system-level benchmarks, including a median 2-qubit gate fidelity of 99.5% and genuinely entangling all 20 qubits in a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state.

With a growing interest in quantum technology globally, there is an increasing need for accessing relevant physical systems for education and research. In this paper we introduce a commercially available on-site quantum computer utilizing superconducting technology, offering insights into its fundamental hardware and software components. We show how this system can be used in education to teach quantum concepts and deepen understanding of quantum theory and quantum computing. It offers learning opportunities for future talent and contributes to technological progress. Josephson junctions (JJs) in the presence of a magnetic field exhibit qualitatively different interference patterns depending on the spatial distribution of the supercurrent through the junction. In JJs based on two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTIs), the electrons/holes forming a Cooper pair (CP) can either propagate along the same edge or be split into the two edges. The former leads to a SQUID-like interference pattern, with the superconducting flux quantum $\phi_0$ (where $\phi_0=h/2e$) as a fundamental period. If CPs' splitting is additionally included, the resultant periodicity doubles. Since the edge states are typically considered to be strongly localized, the critical current does not decay as a function of the magnetic field. The present paper goes beyond this approach and inspects a topological JJ in the tunneling regime featuring extended edge states. It is here considered the possibility that the two electrons of a CP propagate and explore the junction independently over length scales comparable to the superconducting coherence length. As a consequence of the spatial extension, a decaying pattern with different possible periods is obtained. In particular, it is shown that, if crossed Andreev reflections (CARs) are dominant and the edge states overlap, the resulting interference pattern features oscillations whose periodicity approaches $2\phi_0$., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Topological quantum computation relies on a protected degenerate subspace enabling complicated operations in a noise-resilient way. To this end, hybrid platforms based on non-Abelian quasiparticles such as parafermions hold great promise. These are predicted to emerge at the interface between fractional quantum Hall states and superconductors and therefore naturally couple to superconducting qubits. Here, we study a parafermionic fluxonium circuit and show that the presence of topological states yields a striking periodicity in the qubit spectrum. In addition, peculiar and marked signatures of different parafermion coupling, associated with multiple tunneling of fractional quasiparticles, can be detected in the qubit microwave spectrum. Finite parafermion coupling can reduce the full degeneracy of the non-Abelian manifold, and we show that this configuration can be used to assess the remaining degree of protection of the system., Comment: 7 (+5) pages, 3 (+4) figures

Great interest revolves around the development of new strategies to efficiently store and manipulate quantum information in a robust and decoherence-free fashion. Several proposals have been put forward to encode information into qubits that are simultaneously insensitive to relaxation and to dephasing processes. Among all, given their versatility and high degree of control, superconducting qubits have been largely investigated in this direction. Here, we present a survey on the basic concepts and ideas behind the implementation of novel superconducting circuits with intrinsic protection against decoherence at a hardware level. In particular, the main focus is on multi-mode superconducting circuits, the paradigmatic example being the so-called $0-\pi$ circuit. We propose a novel spatially inhomogeneous setup for revealing quench-induced fractionalized excitations in entanglement dynamics. In this quench-probe setting, the region undergoing a quantum quench is tunnel-coupled to a static region, the probe.Subsequently, the time-dependent entanglement signatures of a tunable subset of excitations propagating to the probe are monitored by energy selectivity. We exemplify the power of this generic approach by identifying a unique dynamical signature associated with the presence of an isolated Majorana zero mode in the post-quench Hamiltonian. In this case excitations emitted from the topological part of the system give rise to a fractionalized jump of $\log(2)/2$ in the entanglement entropy of the probe. This dynamical effect is highly sensitive to the localized nature of the Majorana zero mode, but does not require the preparation of a topological initial state., Comment: Accepted version

Quantum error mitigation is a key concept for the development of practical applications based on current noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) devices. One of the most promising methods is Richardson extrapolation to the zero noise limit. While its main idea is rather simple, the full potential of Richardson extrapolation has not been completely uncovered yet. We give an in-depth analysis of the relevant parameters of Richardson extrapolation and propose an optimized protocol for its implementation. This protocol allows for a precise control of the increase in statistical uncertainty and lays the foundation for a significant improvement of the mitigation performance achieved by increasing the number of nodes. Furthermore, we present a novel set of nodes that, on average, outperforms the linear, exponential or Chebyshev nodes frequently used for Richardson extrapolation without requiring any additional resources., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

We theoretically analyse a long constriction between the helical edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. The constriction is laterally tunnel-coupled to two superconductors and a magnetic field is applied perpendicularly to the plane of the two-dimensional topological insulator. The Josephson current is calculated analytically up to second order in the tunnel coupling both in the absence and in the presence of a bias (DC and AC Josephson currents). We show that in both cases the current acquires an anomalous $4\pi$-periodicity with respect to the magnetic flux that is absent if the two edges are not tunnel-coupled to each other. The result, that provides at the same time a characterisation of the device and a possible experimental signature of the coupling between the edges, is stable against temperature. The processes responsible for the anomalous $4\pi$-periodicity are the ones where, within the constriction, one of the two electrons forming a Cooper pair tunnels between the two edges., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

We propose a versatile setup that allows performing spin-resolved spectroscopy of helical Andreev bound states, proving their existence and therefore the topological nature of the Josephson junction that hosts them. The latter is realized on the helical edge of a 2D topological insulator, proximitized with two superconducting electrodes. The spectroscopic analysis is enabled by a quantum point contact, which couples the junction with another helical edge acting as a spin-sensitive prove. By means of straightforward transport measurements, it is possible to detect the particular spin structure of the helical Andreev bound state and to shine light on the mechanism responsible for their existence, i.e. the presence of protected Andreev reflection within the Josephson junction. In the context of one-dimensional fermionic systems, helical Luttiger liquids are not only characterized by intriguing spin properties, but also by the possibility to be manipulated by means of electrostatic gates, exploiting finite Rashba coupling. We use this property to show that a heterostructure composed of a helical Luttinger liquid, contacted to two metallic leads and supplemented by top gates, can be used as a tunable thermal valve. By relying on bosonization techniques and scattering of plasmonic modes, we investigate the performance of this valve with respect to electron-electron interactions, temperature, and properties of the gates. The maximal modulation of the thermal conductance that the proposed device can achieve is, for experimentally relevant parameters, around $7 \%$. Such variation can be both positive or negative. Moreover, a modification in the geometry of the gate can lead to particular temperature dependencies related to interference effects. The CNOT gate is a two-qubit gate which is essential for universal quantum computation. A well-established approach to implement it within Majorana-based qubits relies on subsequent measurement of (joint) Majorana parities. We propose an alternative scheme which operates a protected CNOT gate via the holonomic control of a handful of system parameters, without requiring any measurement. We show how the adiabatic tuning of pair-wise couplings between Majoranas can robustly lead to the full entanglement of two qubits, insensitive with respect to small variations in the control of the parameters., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

The demonstration of the non-Abelian properties of Majorana bound states (MBS) is a crucial step toward topological quantum computing. We theoretically investigate how Majorana fusion rules manifest themselves in the current-voltage characteristics of a topological Josephson junction. The junction is built on U-shaped quantum spin Hall edges and hosts a Majorana qubit formed by four MBS. Owing to Majorana fusion rules, inter- and intra-edge couplings among adjacent MBS provide two orthogonal components in the rotation axis of the Majorana qubit. We show that the interplay of the dynamics of the superconductor phase difference and the Majorana qubit governs the Josephson effect. Strikingly, we identify sequential jumps of the voltage across the junction with increasing DC current bias without external AC driving. Its role is replaced by the intrinsic Rabi oscillations of the Majorana qubit. Second-order topological superconductors (SOTSs) host localized Majorana fermions and provide a new platform for topological quantum computation. We propose a remarkable and feasible way to realize networks based on SOTSs which allow to nucleate and braid Majorana bound states (MBSs) in an all-electrical manner without fine-tuning. The proposed setups are scalable in a straightforward way and can accommodate any even number of MBSs. Moreover, the MBSs in the networks allow defining qubits whose states can be initialized and read out by measuring Josephson currents flowing between SOTS islands. Majorana fermions feature non-Abelian exchange statistics and promise fascinating applications in topological quantum computation. Recently, second-order topological superconductors (SOTSs) have been proposed to host Majorana fermions as localized quasiparticles with zero excitation energy, pointing out a new avenue to facilitate topological quantum computation. We provide a minimal model for SOTSs and systematically analyze the features of Majorana zero modes with analytical and numerical methods. We further construct the fundamental fusion principles of zero modes stemming from a single or multiple SOTS islands. Finally, we propose concrete schemes in different setups formed by SOTSs, enabling us to exchange and fuse the zero modes for non-Abelian braiding and holonomic quantum gate operations., Comment: Improvements in the descriptions of Majorana exchanges; Appendices are included. We propose a novel realization for a topologically superconducting phase hosting Majorana zero-modes on the basis of quantum spin Hall systems. Remarkably, our proposal is completely free of ferromagnets. Instead, we confine helical edge states around a narrow defect line of finite length in a two-dimensional topological insulator. We demonstrate the formation of a new topological regime, hosting protected Majorana modes in the presence of s-wave superconductivity and Zeeman coupling. Majorana bound states are zero-energy excitations of topological superconductors which obey non-Abelian exchange statistics and are basic building blocks for topological quantum computation. In order to observe and exploit their extraordinary properties, we need to be able to properly manipulate them, for instance, by braiding a couple of them in real space. We propose a setup based on the helical edges of two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI) which allows for a high degree of tunability by only controlling a handful of superconducting phases. In particular, our setup allows to move the Majoranas along a single edge as well as to move them across two different edges coupled by a quantum point contact. Robustness against non-optimal control of the phases is also discussed. Parafermions are non-Abelian anyons which generalize Majorana fermions and hold great promise for topological quantum computation. We study the braiding of $\mathbb{Z}_{2n}$ parafermions which have been predicted to emerge as bound states in fractional quantum Hall systems at filling factor $\nu = 1/n$ ($n$ odd). Using a combination of bosonization and refermionization, we calculate the energy splitting as a function of distance and chemical potential for a pair of parafermions separated by a gapped region. Braiding of parafermions in quantum Hall edge states can be implemented by repeated fusion and nucleation of parafermion pairs. We simulate the conventional braiding protocol of parafermions numerically, taking into account the finite separation and finite chemical potential. We show that a nonzero chemical potential poses challenges for the adiabaticity of the braiding process because it leads to accidental crossings in the spectrum. Precise shaping of coherent electron sources allows the controlled creation of wavepackets into a one dimensional (1D) quantum conductor. Periodic trains of Lorentzian pulses have been shown to induce minimal excitations without creating additional electron-hole pairs in a single non-interacting 1D electron channel. The presence of electron-electron (e-e) interactions dramatically affects the non-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D system. Here, we consider the intrinsic spectral properties of a helical liquid, with a pair of counterpropagating interacting channels, in the presence of time-dependent Lorentzian voltage pulses. We show that peculiar asymmetries in the behavior of the spectral function are induced by interactions, depending on the sign of the injected charges. Moreover, we discuss the robustness of the concept of minimal excitations in the presence of interactions, where the link with excess noise is no more straightforward. Finally, we propose a scanning tunneling microscope setup to spectroscopically access and probe the non-equilibrium behavior induced by the voltage drive and e-e interactions. This allows a diagnosis of fractional charges in a correlated quantum spin Hall liquid in the presence of time-dependent drives., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Parafermions are emergent excitations which generalize Majorana fermions and are potentially relevant to topological quantum computation. Using the concept of Fock parafermions, we present a mapping between lattice $\mathbb{Z}_4$ parafermions and lattice spin-$1/2$ fermions which preserves the locality of operators with $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. Based on this mapping, we construct an exactly solvable, local, and interacting one-dimensional fermionic Hamiltonian which hosts zero-energy modes obeying parafermionic algebra. We numerically show that this parafermionic phase remains stable in a wide range of parameters, and discuss its signatures in the fermionic spectral function., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

It has been shown that a quantum quench of interactions in a one-dimensional fermion system at zero temperature induces a universal power law $\propto t^{-2}$ in its long-time dynamics. In this paper we demonstrate that this behaviour is robust even in the presence of thermal effects. The system is initially prepared in a thermal state, then at a given time the bath is disconnected and the interaction strength is suddenly quenched. The corresponding effects on the long times dynamics of the non-equilibrium fermionic spectral function are considered. We show that the non-universal power laws, present at zero temperature, acquire an exponential decay due to thermal effects and are washed out at long times, while the universal behaviour $\propto t^{-2}$ is always present. To verify our findings, we argue that these features are also visible in transport properties at finite temperature. The long-time dynamics of the current injected from a biased probe exhibits the same universal power law relaxation, in sharp contrast with the non-quenched case which features a fast exponential decay of the current towards its steady value, and thus represents a fingerprint of quench-induced dynamics. Finally, we show that a proper tuning of the probe temperature, compared to that of the one-dimensional channel, can enhance the visibility of the universal power-law behaviour., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures. We investigate the time evolution towards the asymptotic steady state of a one dimensional interacting system after a quantum quench. We show that at finite time the latter induces entanglement between right- and left- moving density excitations, encoded in their cross-correlators, which vanishes in the long-time limit. This behavior results in a universal time-decay in system spectral properties $ \propto t^{-2} $, in addition to non-universal power-law contributions typical of Luttinger liquids. Importantly, we argue that the presence of quench-induced entanglement clearly emerges in transport properties, such as charge and energy currents injected in the system from a biased probe, and determines their long-time dynamics. In particular, energy fractionalization phenomenon turns out to be a promising platform to observe the universal power-law decay $ \propto t^{-2} $ induced by entanglement and represents a novel way to study the corresponding relaxation mechanism., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We study the problem of injecting single electrons into interacting one-dimensional quantum systems, a fundamental building block for electron quantum optics. It is well known that such injection leads to charge and energy fractionalization. We elucidate this concept by calculating the nonequilibrium electron distribution function in the momentum and energy domains after the injection of an energy-resolved electron. Our results shed light on how fractionalization occurs via the creation of particle-hole pairs by the injected electron. In particular, we focus on systems with a pair of counterpropagating channels, and we fully analyze the properties of each chiral fractional excitation which is created by the injection. We suggest possible routes to access their energy and momentum distribution functions in topological quantum Hall or quantum spin-Hall edge states., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Charge and energy fractionalization are among the most intriguing features of interacting onedimensional fermion systems. In this work we determine how these phenomena are modified in the presence of an interaction quench. Charge and energy are injected into the system suddenly after the quench, by means of tunneling processes with a non-interacting one-dimensional probe. Here, we demonstrate that the system settles to a steady state in which the charge fractionalization ratio is unaffected by the pre-quenched parameters. On the contrary, due to the post-quench nonequilibrium spectral function, the energy partitioning ratio is strongly modified, reaching values larger than one. This is a peculiar feature of the non-equilibrium dynamics of the quench process and it is in sharp contrast with the non-quenched case, where the ratio is bounded by one., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

The possibility to inject a single electron into ballistic conductors is at the basis of the new field of electron quantum optics. Here, we consider a single electron injection into the helical edge channels of a topological insulator. Their counterpropagating nature and the unavoidable presence of electron-electron interactions dramatically affect the time evolution of the single wavepacket. Modeling the injection process from a mesoscopic capacitor in presence of non-local tunneling, we focus on the time resolved charge and energy packet dynamics. Both quantities split up into counterpropagating contributions whose profiles are strongly affected by the interactions strength. In addition, stronger signatures are found for the injected energy, which is also affected by the finite width of the tunneling region. Indeed, the energy flow can be controlled by tuning the injection parameters and we demonstrate that, in presence of non-local tunneling, it is possible to achieve situation in which charge and energy flow in opposite directions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We analyze the time evolution of spin-polarized electron wave packets injected into the edge states of a two-dimensional topological insulator. In the presence of electron interactions, the system is described as a helical Luttinger liquid and injected electrons fractionalize. However, because of the presence of metallic detectors, no evidences of fractionalization are encoded in dc measurements, and in this regime the system do not show deviations from its non-interacting behavior. Helical Luttinger liquids, appearing at the edge of two-dimensional topological insulators, represent a new paradigm of one-dimensional systems, where peculiar quantum phenomena can be investigated. Motivated by recent experiments on charge fractionalization, we propose a setup based on helical Luttinger liquids that allows to time-resolve, in addition to charge fractionalization, also spin-charge separation and pure spin fractionalization. This is due to the combined presence of spin-momentum locking and interactions. We show that electric time-resolved measurements can reveal both charge and spin properties, avoiding the need of magnetic materials.
