Introduction In recent years a steady increase in the number of obese people has been observed worldwide. This problem is also increasingly applicable to children and adolescents. In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis of studies carried out in Poland over ten years (2005–2015) which analysed the diet of preschool children and assessed how significantly it affects the prevention of diet-dependent disease. Material and methods Two of the researchers independently performed a systematic search of Medline, Embase, Google Scholar, and the Polish Medical Bibliography to find studies published between 2005 and 2015. The variance of the means of differences between selected factors in relation to dietary guidelines and standards for preschool children was estimated by summing the individual variances of means. The means of differences between selected factors across the studies were pooled using random-effects model meta-analysis. Results The analysis included a total of 2095 children. Mean protein content in the diet of children studied is 111% higher than indicated in dietary recommendations for this age group; mean consumption of carbohydrates in the study group is 24% higher than recommended. In moderately high calorie diets, analysis showed that the recommended norm is exceeded by 47%, CE 0.77, p < 0.001. Conclusions Nutrient intake is not compliant with recommendations for this age group and could not only inhibit physical development, but also increase the risk of diet-dependent diseases.

The objective of the paper is to study the effects of anaerobic exercise on fatty acids percentage in adipose tissues of different localization under high-calorie diets in rats. Materials and Methods. The authors examined Wistar rats under high calorie diets (32 % fat content). In the first group the animals were not exposed to any physical exercise. In the second group rats were exposed to anaerobic physical activity, namely swimming. The percentage of 24 fatty acids (FA) and the value of 14 integrative indicators (complexes) in the depot of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues were determined using chromatography-mass spectrometry (Agilent Technologies, USA). Results. Anaerobic exercise led to an increase in saturated FAs in the mesenteric adipose tissues and to a decrease in unsaturated FAs, as well as to a decrease in the unsaturation index; an increase in the retroperitoneal adipose tissue of the FA sphingophospholipid substrates, FA membrane substrates, a decrease in the energy substrates, an increase of vitamin F FA substrates due to ω6 of unsaturated FAs. At the same time, a decrease in the amount of polyunsaturated FAs was observed in the subcutaneous depot, and the balance between ω3/ω6 shifted towards ω6 of unsaturated FAs. In the mesenteric and retroperitoneal adipose tissues, there was a decrease in monounsaturated FAs due to ω9 of unsaturated FAs, and the ratio of saturated FAs/monounsaturated FAs shifted towards saturated FAs. Only in retroperitoneal adipose tissues there was a decrease in ω7 of saturated FAs due to C16: 1 ω7. Conclusion. Regular anaerobic exercise and a high-calorie diet showed the most pronounced effect on FAs in visceral adipose tissues, namely in mesenteric and retroperitoneal tissues. Цель – исследовать воздействие анаэробной физической нагрузки на процентное содержание жирных кислот в жировой ткани разной локализации на фоне питания повышенной калорийности у крыс. Материалы и методы. В исследовании использовали крыс линии Wistar, находящихся на питании повышенной калорийности (с долей жира 32 %). В первой группе животных физическая нагрузка отсутствовала, крысы второй группы получали физическую нагрузку преимущественно анаэробного характера в виде плавания. Процентное содержание 24 жирных кислот (ЖК) и значение 14 интегративных показателей (комплексов) в депо висцеральной и подкожной жировой ткани определяли на хромато-масс-спектрометре (Аgilent Technologies, США). Результаты. Анаэробная физическая нагрузка привела к увеличению содержания в мезентеральной жировой ткани насыщенных ЖК (НасЖК) и снижению ненасыщенных ЖК (НЖК), а также снижению индекса ненасыщенности; увеличению в забрюшинной жировой ткани ЖК-субстратов сфингофосфолипидов, ЖК-субстратов мембран, снижению субстратов энергии, увеличению содержания ЖК-субстратов витамина F за счет ω6 НЖК. При этом в подкожном депо наблюдалось снижение суммы полиненасыщенных ЖК, а баланс ω3/ω6 сместился в сторону ω6 НЖК. В мезентериальной и забрюшинной жировой ткани отмечалось снижение содержания мононенасыщенных ЖК (МНЖК) за счет ω9 НЖК, а соотношение НасЖК/МНЖК сместилось в сторону НасЖК. Только в забрюшинной жировой ткани было установлено снижение содержания ω7 НЖК за счет С16:1 ω7. Выводы. Регулярная анаэробная физическая нагрузка на фоне питания повышенной калорийности продемонстрировала наиболее выраженное влияние в отношении ЖК в висцеральной жировой ткани, а именно в мезентериальной и забрюшинной. Objective The theory of fetal programming suggests that low birth weight (LBW) predisposes to greater food intake and increases the chance of overweight and obesity, which are in turn associated to conditions such as metabolic syndrome (MS) and acanthosis nigricans. The study objective was to ascertain whether an association exists between MS, LBW, intake of high-calorie diets, and acanthosis nigricans in children and adolescents with overweight or obesity. Material and methods A case-control was conducted on 100 children who attended the overweight and obesity outpatient clinic of the OPD Hospital Civil de Guadalajara “Fray Antonio Alcalde”. Subjects were stratified in groups with and without MS based on the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation for children aged less than 16 years. Data on LBW, intake of high-calorie diets for 24-h dietary recalls (average 2 days a week), and acanthosis nigricans (Simone criteria) were obtained by questioning the parents. Frequencies and logistic regression were calculated using SPSS version 22. Results The results show that 82% of children and adolescents were obese and 18% overweight, and 73% had MS. MS was associated to LBW (OR: 4.83 [95% CI: 1.9–12.47]), high-calorie diets (OR: 136.8 [95% CI: 7.7–2434]), and acanthosis nigricans (OR: 1872 [95% CI: 112.9–31028]). Conclusions In children and adolescents with overweight and obesity, LBW, high-calorie diets, and acanthosis nigricans are associated to a higher probability of MS.

Encouraging consumers to shift their diets towards a lower meat/lower calorie alternative has been the focus of food and health policies across the world. The economic impacts of such changes on regions have been less widely examined, but are likely to be significant, especially where agricultural and food production activities are important for the region. In this study we use a multi-sectoral modelling framework to examine the environmental and economic impacts of such a dietary change, and illustrate this using a detailed model for Scotland. We find that if household food and drink consumption follows healthy eating guidelines, it would reduce both Scotland’s “footprint” and “territorial” emissions, and yet may be associated with positive economic impacts, generating a “double dividend” for both the environment and the economy. The economic impact however depends critically upon how households use the income previously spent on higher meat/higher calorie diets. Furthermore, the likely (but not modelled) benefits to health suggest the potential for a “triple dividend”.

Background: Weight loss in obese individuals aims to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by improving glycemic control. Yet, significant intersubject variability is observed and the outcomes remain poorly predictable.Objective: The aim of the study was to predict whether an individual will show improvements in insulin sensitivity above or below the median population change at 6 mo after a low-calorie-diet (LCD) intervention.Design: With the use of plasma lipidomics and metabolomics for 433 subjects from the Diet, Obesity, and Genes (DiOGenes) Study, we attempted to predict good or poor Matsuda index improvements 6 mo after an 8-wk LCD intervention (800 kcal/d). Three independent analysis groups were defined: "training" (n = 119) for model construction, "testing" (n = 162) for model comparison, and "validation" (n = 152) to validate the final model.Results: Initial modeling with baseline clinical variables (body mass index, Matsuda index, total lipid concentrations, sex, age) showed limited performance [area under the curve (AUC) on the "testing dataset" = 0.69; 95% CI: 0.61, 0.77]. Significantly better performance was achieved with an omics model based on 27 variables (AUC = 0.77; 95% CI: 0.70, 0.85; P = 0.0297). This model could be greatly simplified while keeping the same performance. The simplified model relied on baseline Matsuda index, proline, and phosphatidylcholine 0-34:1. It successfully replicated on the validation set (AUC = 0.75; 95% CI: 0.67, 0.83) with the following characteristics: specificity = 0.73, sensitivity = 0.68, negative predictive value = 0.60, and positive predictive value = 0.80. Marginally lower performance was obtained when replacing the Matsuda index with homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (AUC = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.64, 0.80; P = 0.08).Conclusions: Our study proposes a model to predict insulin sensitivity improvements, 6 mo after LCD completion in a large population of overweight or obese nondiabetic subjects. It relies on baseline information from 3 variables, accessible from blood samples. This model may help clinicians assessing the large variability in dietary interventions and predict outcomes before an intervention. For over half a century, researchers have been feeding different diets to rodents to examine the effects of macronutrients on whole body and tissue insulin action. During this period, the number of different diets and the source of macronutrients employed have grown dramatically. Because of the large heterogeneity in both the source and percentage of different macronutrients used for studies, it is not surprising that different high-calorie diets do not produce the same changes in insulin action. Despite this, diverse high-calorie diets continue to be employed in an attempt to generate a “generic” insulin resistance. The high-fat diet in particular varies greatly between studies with regard to the source, complexity, and ratio of dietary fat, carbohydrate, and protein. This review examines the range of rodent dietary models and methods for assessing insulin action. In almost all studies reviewed, rodents fed diets that had more than 45% of dietary energy as fat or simple carbohydrates had reduced whole body insulin action compared with chow. However, different high-calorie diets produced significantly different effects in liver, muscle, and whole body insulin action when insulin action was measured by the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp method. Rodent dietary models remain an important tool for exploring potential mechanisms of insulin resistance, but more attention needs to be given to the total macronutrient content and composition when interpreting dietary effects on insulin action.

In brief: We studied the nutritional and hematologic status of 22 professional ballet dancers (10 men, 12 women, mean age 25), from American Ballet Theatre by analyzing daily dietary intake and laboratory data including blood vitamin assays. The dancers had law percent body fat. Daily calorie intake was 2,967 ± 667 kcal for men and 1,673 ± 450 kcal for women. Carbohydrate consumption (38% of the total daily calorie intake for men and 50% for women) was too law for efficient energy use. Hemoglobin and red cell indexes were normal, but serum ferritin was below normal in eight women and three men. Serum chemistry values were normal. Blood vitamin assays were normal in all dancers, reflecting widespread use of vitamin supplements. By sports medicine standards, the dancers' law calorie diets were suboptimal for strenuous physical exercise.

When decreasing the energy value of broiler diets, nonstarch polysaccharide degrading enzymes, such as xylanase, are often used. In doing so, they are assigned an energy value and considered to contribute energy to the diet. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of decreasing energy in a broiler diet by 100 kCal/kg on performance and whether the expected drop in performance could be recovered with the use of xylanase. Two formulations were used to provide decreased energy diets, both with and without supplementary fat. Six hundred 1-d-old male Cobb broilers were placed in a 2 × 3 full factorial design in 5 randomized complete blocks. The treatments were enzyme dose at 0 or 16,000 U/kg, and the 3 different diets [positive control (PC), negative control 1, without fat (NC1), and negative control 2 with fat (NC2)]. At no point were there any interactions between diet type and enzyme inclusion; where there was an effect of xylanase, it was consistent regardless of the diet type. There was a significant effect of diet type on feed intake between d 0 to 35; NC1 and NC2 had significantly increased feed intake compared with the PC (P = 0.006). The feed conversion ratio was significantly increased in birds fed the negative control diets during 0 to 35 d and 0 to 42 d (P = 0.003 and P = 0.002, respectively). However, feed conversion ratio was significantly improved by the addition of enzyme during periods 0 to 35 d and 0 to 42 d. There were no significant main effects between d 0 and 21 (all responses P > 0.1). Liveability was not affected by any of the treatments (P > 0.1). Decreasing energy in broiler diets results in worsened performance. The use of xylanase may improve feed conversion ratio. The use of some fat may help, so the whole diet composition should be considered in conjunction with enzyme dose to achieve the best advantage.

Developing countries are now witnessing an increase in overweight; obesity and obesity-related morbidity. We determined the prevalence of obesity using the measure of body mass index (BMI) and hypertension and the association between obesity and hypertension among adults in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. A cross-sectional descriptive study of 400 adults was carried out. Participants were administered a standardized questionnaire and had measurements of weight, height and blood pressure taken. Four hundred subjects were randomly selected (221 females and 179 males) with a mean age of 48.65 ± 16.56 years. The overall prevalence of obesity was 14.75% (8.9% for males and 19.5% for females). In addition, 62.4% of the females were sedentary as compared to 50.8% of the males and the difference is statistically significant. The families of most of the subjects who were obese (88.1%) preferred high calorie diets. The prevalence of hypertension among the study population was 50.5% [49.3% for female and 52.0% for males (p>0.05)]. The prevalence of hypertension among the subjects who were obese was 72.9%. Obesity in this environment is particularly significant among females and is associated with hypertension, physical inactivity and the consumption of high calorie diets.

Macronutrient substitutes, reduced-calorie substances used to replace organoleptic and/or functional properties of fats and sugars in the diet, may become a significant part of the diet as the trend toward lower fat and lower calorie diets continues. Procedures currently used to evaluate the safety of traditional food additives (microadditives) may be inadequate to properly assess the safety of macronutrient substitutes (macroadditives) because of the unique nature of these substances and the potentially large intakes. An evaluation procedure is proposed that recognizes the benefits to be derived from the test material, uses a structured approach to obtain animal and human nutritional and toxicological (including kinetic and dispositional) data that are critically evaluated and that provide a basis for further testing, encourages consultation with the regulatory agency (FDA), and recommends postmarketing surveillance of the macronutrient substitute. The proposed scheme differs from the traditional approach in many respects, such as using dispositional and kinetic data, assessing nutritional status, using human data collected under carefully controlled conditions early in the process, and consulting with the FDA. A case-by-case approach is recommended for safety evaluation of these macroadditives.

Today’s high calorie diets and low physical activity levels contributes towards childhood obesity. Exergaming, a combination of ”exercise” and ”gaming” was conceived as a means of addressing this problem. In this paper a mobile collaborative exergame, which is designed to be enjoyable and physically challenging, is presented. The long term objective is to harness conventional mobile computing technologies to deliver a platform for games that are adaptive to the exercise requirements of individual children.

Siberian hamsters respond to food deprivation or restriction by increasing their food hoarding and do so proportionately to the degree of body mass (fat) loss. These data suggest that Siberian hamsters integrate their internally stored energy as body fat with their externally stored energy as hoarded food such that when internal energy stores are decreased, external stores are increased. The purpose of the present experiments was to test whether the caloric value of the food hoard is regulated. This was accomplished by challenging the hamsters with diets of varying caloric density and assessing whether their hoarded food is changed accordingly. Specifically, in Experiment 1 hamsters were switched from the control food pellets to a diet where the caloric density was increased by creating a high fat diet (HFD). In Experiment 2, the caloric density of the control diet was decreased by diluting it with cellulose such that 25% and 50% (kcal/wt) reduced calorie diets (RCDs) were created. HFD-fed hamsters decreased their food hoarding, increased their body mass, and decreased the grams of food eaten, but not enough to compensate exactly for the increased caloric density of the diet. When refed the control diet, food hoarding increased to pre-HFD levels as body mass and food intake decreased. RCD feeding resulted in caloric density-dependent effects on all measures. Food hoarding and intake (grams and calories) increased when hamsters were given the 25% RCD and did so to an even greater degree when given the 50% RCD. Thus, Siberian hamsters responded to increases or decreases in the caloric density of their food by attempting to regulate the number of calories hoarded and eaten; however, the adjustments in food hoarding: 1) were not precise, 2) were largely opposite of food intake, 3) tended to be inversely related to body mass and 4) were caloric density dependent.

The impact of varying caloric intake on peripheral monodeiodination and plasma disposal of T3, rT3, and the three diiodothyronines (T2) was studied in five normal subjects while they were consuming a low calorie diet (1200 Cal/day) and again while receiving a high calorie diet (3600 Cal/day). Toward the end of each diet period 240 nmol 3,3'-T2 (126 micrograms) and 80 nmol 3',5'-T2 (42 micrograms) were infused for 7 h, and a bolus injection of 137 nmol 3,5-T2 (72 micrograms) was followed by a 12-h infusion of 69 nmol 3,5-T2 (36 micrograms) and 111 nmol rT3 (72 micrograms) on another day. [125I]T3 (30 muCi) was injected on the third day. The T2 and rT3 concentrations were measured by RIA during the 2 days of infusion, and the serum disappearance of [125I]T3 was studied by immunoprecipitation and trichloroacetic acid precipitation of the labeled T3. Four to 5% of the plasma disposal of T3 was accounted for by 3'-monodeiodination, and 36-39% by 5-monodeiodination. Increasing caloric intake resulted in a higher overall plasma disposal rate of T3, but no change in the percentage of T3 metabolized by monodeiodination pathways. In contrast, 5'-monodeiodination accounted for 21% of the total plasma disposal of rT3 during the low calorie diet and 45% during the high calorie intake. This increase in 5'-monodeiodination of rT3 was at the expense of alternative pathways of disposal. A marked increase in the plasma clearance rate of 3,5-T2 was also found during the high calorie diet, indicating that the level of caloric intake affects pathways of metabolism other than outer ring monodeiodination. These studies emphasize the important role played by diet in the regulation of peripheral thyroid hormone metabolism through modulating outer ring monodeiodination, and that overnutrition changes other pathways of iodothyronine metabolism as well.

For the treatment of obesity we have three diet programs, 1, 000, 900, and 700 calorie diets, containing 60 g protein, 13-18 per cent calorie fat and 53-58 per cent carbohydrate. Regardless of age, height, grade of obesity or daily activity, we prescribed the 1, 000-calorie diet for obese men and the 900-calorie diet for women. Observing the cessation of weight reduction, we reduced to 900-calorie diet for men and 700-calorie diet for women. Four hundred and sixty obese patients were treated with these dietary regimens. Of these, 400 were treated in out-patients clinic and 60 in hospitalization. Different from the general incidence of obesity, there were over four times more women who visit the obesity clinic than men, and there were slightly more young ones. Of 400 out-patients, 12.8 per cent did not return after the diet was prescribed and 5.3 per cent did not obtain a weight loss even though they came back. A weight loss was observed in 82 per cent, among whom 51.7 per cent obtained a weight loss of more than 4kg. The average number of weeks required for a weight loss of 4 kg were 5.0±0.3 weeks in 183 out-patients and 2.2±0.2 weeks in 44 inpatients. The fact that the speed of weight loss is slower in out-patients in spite of the possibility of having more activity is thought to be because it is difficult for them to adhere to the prescribed diet at home.
