The Multi-scale Laboratories (MSL) are a network of European laboratories bringing together the scientific fields of analogue modeling, paleomagnetism, experimental rock and melt physics, geochemistry and microscopy. MSL is one of nine (see below) Thematic Core Services (TCS) of the European Plate Observing System (EPOS). The overarching goal of EPOS is to establish a comprehensive multidisciplinary research platform for the Earth sciences in Europe. It aims at facilitating the integrated use of data, models, and facilities, from both existing and new distributed pan European Research Infrastructures, allowing open access and transparent use of data. The TCS MSL network allows researchers to collaborate with other labs and scientists. By becoming part of the rapidly growing TCS MSL network, new laboratories are offered a platform to showcase their research data output, laboratory equipment and information, and the opportunity to open laboratories to guest researchers through the Transnational Access (TNA) program. The EPOS Multi-scale laboratories offer researchers a fully operational data publication chain tailored to the specific needs of laboratory research, from a bespoke metadata editor, through dedicated, (domain-specific) data repositories, to the MSL Portal showcasing these citable data publications. During this process the data publications are assigned with digital object identidiers (DOI), published with open licenses (e.g. CC BY 4.0) and described with standardized and machine-readable rich metadata (following the FAIR Principles to make research data Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable. The last eruption of the Fogo volcano, in the Cape Verde Archipelago, occurred in 2014-2015. A mineralogical and chemical study was undertaken on fumarole incrustations resulting from this event and compared with results obtained from the previous 1995 eruption. The mineralogical constitution of the fumarole deposits was assessed by X-ray diffraction and the chemical characterization was performed through X-ray fluorescence spectrometry with a wavelength dispersive system and by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The most common compounds/minerals in solid deposits were sulfur, sodium chloride, and calcium sulphates with variable degrees of hydration, sodium sulphate, hydrated sulphates of sodium aluminum, potassium magnesium, or sodium magnesium and a fluorine-bearing mineral. Thenardite (Na2SO4) and its polymorph (phase III) were found simultaneously for the first time in incrustations, to the best of our knowledge. A large span of minor and trace elements present in incrustations (Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ba, Ce, Tl, Pb) were also identified, some of them potentially hazardous to animal and human health. This study reveals that low temperature incrustations, allied to the atmospheric conditions of Fogo volcano, constitute a natural laboratory to observe the process of mineral formation-namely the Na2SO4 phase III considered metastable. The lithospheric architecture of Africa consists of several Archean cratons and smaller cratonic fragments, stitched together and flanked by younger fold belts. The three larger cratons (West Africa, Congo and Kalahari Cratons) are underlain by Sub Continental Lithospheric Mantle (SCLM) extending to ≥300 km depth and having a prevailing depleted composition. Three series of spinel peridotite xenoliths from Waw-En-Namus (Libya; LB hereafter), Tafraoute and Bou-Ibalrhatene (Morocco; MOR), Barombi Mbo and Lake Nyos (Cameroon; CA) have been investigated to provide a new knowledge of the mantle beneath North-Western Africa continent. In particular MOR and LB should reflect peri- and meta-cratonic conditions, respectively while CA are from the Cameroon volcanic line whose products outcrop within a polycyclic mobile belt. According to their chemistry, the spinels from CAM and MOR xenoliths are magmatic cumulates while LB are representatives of ambient lithospheric peridotites. From a structural point of view, the CAM and MOR spinels are rather similar having comparable cell edges and oxygen positional parameters. The cation distribution allows the determination of an intracrystalline temperature in the range 560-750 °C. Spinels from LB can be divided in two groups with very different oxygen positional parameter and cell edges. The intracrystalline temperature is 680 °C for the second. There is a similarity of Vcell between the CAM, MOR and LBI cpx (< 434 Å3) while those from LBII show Vcell >435 Å3. According to their REE contents, CAM cpx can be divided in 2 groups (depleted and enriched in LREE compared to CPX-DMM), in MOR there are two, both enriched, but with different behavior of the LREE suggesting evolutions starting from a DMM like composition. LB cpx show 4 groups, all of them being more or less depleted. The OH contents are lowest for the LB cpx (100-300 ppm H2O), while the CAM samples are intermediate (200-400 ppm H2O) and the MOR samples show the highest contents (380-610 ppm H2O). Boron is nearly absent apart from two samples (one olivine and one cpx) from CAM. The xenoliths sampled from a probably juvenile lithosphere at the edge of the Cameroon and Morocco lithospheric roots apparently have cumulus-like spinels probably crystallized in situ from percolating melts and thus do not represent a real spinel-peridotites facies; on the contrary peridotite mantle xenoliths from Libya exhibit spinels with features compatible with a slow ascent of a mantle plume. The juvenile behaviors shown by CAM and MOR spinels seem also to be reflected by the cpx-HREE patterns showing typical DMM features. As opposed, for LB ones, where very depleted HREE patterns appear, recent chemical changes seem to have been superimposed to ancient (and/or deeper?) depletion. The value analysis methodology uses a structured and methodical job plan contemplating several steps to assure the success in their application. The most known and distinctive phase is functional analysis, nowadays an autonomous tool of value analysis. In order to characterize the customer’s needs in a clear language and to quantify the value of a product (a bookcase) of the furniture industry, a functional analysis study was developed. With this functional analysis it is intended to describe the functions that the product performs, provide a better knowledge of the product, to evaluate the degree of satisfaction of the product through its functional performance and facilitate the search for alternative solutions.

A cartografia geológica sistemática para a edição da Folha 43-A, Cuba, tem vindo a desenvolver-se desde 2009, com base em levantamentos de campo realizados à escala 1:25000. As unidades cartografadas até à actualidade são incluídas (1) no Maciço de Beja - Pórfiros de Baleizão, Dioritos de Monte Novo e Complexo Gabro Diorítico de Cuba, (2) no sector de Montemor-Ficalho - formações meta-sedimentares e vulcano-sedimentares do Neo-Proterozóico ao Carbónico e (3) nos depósitos do Cenozóico - constituídos por alternâncias de sedimentos finos e grosseiros de idades que variam entre o Paleogénico e o Quaternário. Com este trabalho pretende-se apresentar a cartografia geológica desenvolvida até à actualidade na região de Cuba, Alentejo.

Apresenta-se o estudo de pequenas intrusões bandadas sub-circulares que ocorrem na ilha do Sal, Arquipélago de Cabo Verde. São estruturas constituídas por alternância de bandas sub-horizontais de piroxenitos e gabros na base, a essexitos e sienitos no topo, por vezes com intercalações de gabros com bandado fino sub-vertical. Estudos petrográficos, geoquímicos, mineraloquímicos e petrogenéticos, integrados com os dados de campo, apontam para que estas estruturas correspondam a instrusões sub-vulcânicas originadas por injecção de magmas de composição basanítica em pequenas câmaras magmáticas.

A satisfação com os serviços de saúde, na sua dupla vertente da satisfação dos utentes e da satisfação dos profissionais, é uma área complexa e de difícil avaliação mas, ao mesmo tempo, incontornável. A satisfação dos utentes é, actualmente, considerada como um objectivo fundamental dos serviços de saúde e tem vindo a ocupar um lugar progressivamente mais importante na avaliação da qualidade dos mesmos. O aumento da popularidade deste conceito está associado ao seu valor mediador na aliança (e adesão) terapêutica, à evidência de que a satisfação dos utentes está directamente relacionada com os resultados dos cuidados de saúde, influenciando muitos comportamentos de doença e de saúde, e à crescente importância do papel do utente dos cuidados de saúde enquanto consumidor. Mais especificamente, sabe-se que a satisfação dos utentes está associada à taxa de uso de cuidados de saúde, à efectividade das terapêuticas e ao estado geral de saúde. Por seu lado, e numa visão integradora, a satisfação profissional surge como sendo o resultado afectivo da motivação no trabalho, tendo consequências em termos do desempenho no trabalho e, portanto, sendo determinante para o desenvolvimento sustentado dos cuidados de saúde. A satisfação profissional nos serviços de saúde é considerada um elemento estrutural destes e está associada à sua qualidade e resultados, que, como se disse, estão relacionados com a satisfação dos utentes dos serviços. Os dois conceitos – satisfação dos utentes e satisfação profissional – estão, portanto, interligados, influenciando-se mutuamente e, em última análise, afectando todo o funcionamento de um sistema de saúde. Consequentemente, a melhoria contínua dos cuidados de saúde deve ter em conta, de um modo integrado, a satisfação dos seus utentes e a dos seus profissionais. A análise integrada da satisfação do utente, da perspectiva do profissional de saúde quanto ao que constitui um serviço de qualidade, assim como da satisfação do profissional de saúde com o seu trabalho enquanto tal, permite um entendimento mais aprofundado dos processos de melhoria dos cuidados de saúde. Foi o que se pretendeu discutir neste livro.

We analysed the crystallography and the chemistry (major and trace elements) of 16 Cr-diopsides belonging to mantle xenoliths from northern (Waw-En-Namus, Libya; Bou-Ibalrhatene and Tafraoute, Morocco) and central Africa (Nyos and Barombi maars, Cameroon). These mantle xenoliths were extracted from mantle domains underlying a metacraton (Libya), a pericraton (Morocco), and a Pan-African mobile belt (Cameroon). The clinopyroxenes from pericratonic and mobile belt occurrences show similar geochemical features. They usually have high R3+ content and low Ca. When normalized to chondrite abundances, their incompatible trace elements show a wide spectrum of patterns, from slightly depleted to slightly enriched and U-shaped patterns. Such features may indicate interaction with carbonatitic and silicic melts. Their Vcell suggest different equilibrature pressures that are compatible with an ascending diapir and/or entrapment by magmas at different depths within the lithospheric mantle. It is important to stress that variable cell and tetrahedron volumes suggest that Libyan clinopyroxenes formed at variable depths. Those arising from shallower depth are less depleted and may display enriched and U-shaped patterns, while clinopyroxenes deriving from deeper zones display depleted and flat incompatible element patterns, possibly suggesting a melt extraction preceding the delamination of the SCLM.
