The Conca di Acerno is an intra-Apennine graben located in the south-western sector of the carbonatic Mts. Picentini (Campania, province of Salerno). In the past, the graben hosted a lake basin, filled lat a later stage by fluvial-lacustrine deposits, cut in turn by the Tusciano River and by the Isca della Serra Creek. The town of Acerno lies on one of the terraced surfaces. Along the banks of the Tusciano River and the Isca della Serra Creek, on the outskirts of the town of Acerno, two important groups of springs (with a total discharge of about 1000 L/s) are located and tapped by the Ausino Consortium public water supply. All previous data concerning the various groundwater catchment plants, implemented by new measurements (piezometric, hydrochemical and isotopic - 18O and 2H), have led to improve the knowledge on the various hydrogeological aspects related to the origin of the springs and their recharge areas. In detail, the main achieved results are the following: • all the springs are, in different ways, exits of the same groundwater body hosted within the dolomitic bedrock, buried by the detritic-alluvial deposits of the graben; • a significant groundwater flow to the Tusciano River comes from the right bank of the river, in contrast to the present hydrogeological interpretation; • the limits of the groundwater basin feeding the Acerno spring groups have been established more accurately, especially on the basis of the groundwater balance.

The “Campania Trasparente” project is a system-wide action aimed at improving the public awareness on the environmental state of the Campania region. One of its primary objectives is to set-up new and synergistic efforts between researchers and public agencies, finalized to protect the region’s agricultural and livestock resources as well as food consumers by issuing appropriate environmental policies. The project is based on the analysis of the agricultural and zootechnical productions and its effects on primary environmental matrices (soil, water, and air) and epidemiological features. Some researchers of the University of Naples Federico II are involved in this project with the specific task to assess groundwater quality and aquifer vulnerability, allowing also for possible interactions between the vadose zone and shallow aquifers (Romano, 2014). The Campania region can be sketched in four principal hydrogeological frameworks (Allocca et al., 2007), with different groundwater quality and aquifer vulnerability: coastal and internal alluvial plains, with diffused anthropic pressures; Quaternary volcanic structures; Cenozoic flysch series, constituting hills in the interior part of the region and Mesozoic carbonate series, forming the main aquifers. In the alluvial plains, nitrate, manganese and iron are the most common groundwater contaminants. High iron and manganese concentrations occur naturally, but high nitrate levels indicate severe contamination due to human activities (Corniello & Ducci, 2014). Hydrochemical characteristics of the volcanic show the presence of arsenic and fluoride of natural origin (Ducci & Sellerino, 2012). The hydrogeological studies are mainly focused on the characterization of the Natural Background Levels (NBLs) for significant ions in all the groundwater bodies of the region and on the assessment of aquifer vulnerability at different scales. By means of the operational support of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Mezzogiorno (IZSM), extensive groundwater sampling and analyses (over 750 samples) in monitoring wells of farms will be carried out over the entire Campania region, and focused in those more vulnerable and potentially polluted locations. In the past, at the south foot of the hill of “Monte Echia” (Napoli), where is located the Royal Continental Hotel, between Via Partenope and Via Chiatamone, gushed out sulphide- ferruginous springs. These water were used for drinking and bathing for many years, until they was interdicted for the cholera epidemic in 1973. Groundwater very similar in chemistry gushed out also in correspondence of “Vico Belledonne a Chiaia”. Over the years, many wells have been drilled for different purposes in the area of “Monte Echia” or nearby intercepting mineralized waters similar to the above mentioned waters, but totally different from the groundwater flowing below the rest of the city of Napoli. In this paper all the published data about these mineralized waters have been collected and the chemical features have been examined with the aim to individuate the process of the origin of the mineralization.

Le importanti opere di bonifica portate a termine in Piana Campana negli anni tra l’Ottocento e la seconda metà del Novecento hanno sottratto ampi territori al disordine idraulico ed all’impaludamento. Queste zone, prima quasi del tutto disabitate, hanno accolto una fiorente attività agricola a cui si sono via via associati un tessuto urbano sempre più vasto ed una diffusa industrializzazione. In provincia di Napoli, ad esempio, il confronto tra cartografie storiche dell’uso delle terre mostra che dal 1956 al 1998 la superficie urbana provinciale è aumentata del 350 %. Tutto ciò ha comportato una forte pressione sulle acque sotterranee in termini quantitativi, per la crescita dei prelievi dalle falde, e qualitativi per il moltiplicarsi delle fonti di potenziale inquinamento. Gli stessi canali di bonifica, talora divenuti ricettori di acque reflue di varia origine, determinano a luoghi concentrazioni di carichi inquinanti in grado di vulnerare le falde. Di seguito vengono illustrate due situazioni di aree bonificate, ricadenti in contesti ambientali diversi: la prima, relativa alla zona orientale di Napoli, evidenzia la necessità di seguire nel tempo la dinamica delle falde soprattutto in aree soggette a forti prelievi. Il secondo caso riguarda la piana (in destra idrografica) del basso Volturno e mostra come l’insieme delle conoscenze idrogeologiche possa fornire utili indirizzi alla pianificazione del territorio ed alla individuazione delle maggiori risorse idriche sotterranee che richieste dalla crescente antropizzazione dell’area.

About 50% of the territory of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano GeoPark consists of carbonate aquifers which correspond to the mountainous areas in the park (e. g. M.ti Alburni, M.te Cervati, M.te Bulgheria etc.). The rocks of these carbonate aquifers are mainly dolomites (Triassic-Liassic) and limestones (Jurassic). The abundance of groundwater resources in these aquifers is due to many factors: high permeability, the high altitudes that the mountains reach (with its important weather contribution), the absence of significant impermeable layers and the many tectonic-karst depressions. All this means a) that effective infiltration is significant and b) that it is not split into several groundwater bodies distributed at different heights a.s.l. but combines to feed basal ground water resources. The groundwater of these carbonate karst aquifers are therefore the main waters supplied for the populations of Cilento region and strategic water-resources to socio-economic and environmental development for the GeoPark.

Vengono esaminati le cause principali degli innalzamenti piezometrici nella piana a NW del Somma-Vesuvio e nella Piuana di Sarno (a SE dell'edificio vulcanico).

La Conca di Acerno è una depressione intrappenninica presente nel settore sud-occidentale dei Monti Picentini (SA). Nel passato la Conca era occupata da un lago poi colmato da depositi fluvio-lacustri a loro volta reincisi da corsi d’acqua (F. Tusciano e torrente Isca della Serra); su una delle superfici terrazzate risultanti è l’abitato di Acerno. Lungo gli alvei del F. Tusciano e del Torrente Isca della Serra, in aree limitrofe all’abitato di Acerno, si manifestano due importati fronti sorgivi (portata globale 800 l/s) captati dal Consorzio dell’Ausino. La possibilità di disporre di tutti i dati pregressi riguardanti le varie captazioni (l’ultima eseguita alla fine degli anni novanta), integrata da nuove indagini (piezometriche, idrochimiche ed isotopiche - 18O e 2H), ha consentito di definire con notevole precisione i diversi aspetti connessi all’origine delle sorgenti.

In the Garigliano river plain NO3 and Fluoride contents often and widely exceed the drinking-water quality guidelines of 50 and 1,5 mg/L. The Fluoride content is strictly related to the piezometric pattern. Close to the Garigliano river, lower nitrate content is related to reducing conditions, testified by low values of SO4 and high content in Fe and Mn. Afterwards, the isotopic analysis (15N/14N and 18O/16O ratios of dissolved nitrate) were carried out by the CNR-Roma in groundwater of some wells. Starting from this broad hydrogeological knowledge, the following maps to evaluate the “Contamination risk” were drawn up: • the “Pollution Vulnerability Map”, evaluated by the SINTACS parametric system; • The “Agricultural Hazard Map”, rated by the parametric models IPNOA (Danger Index by Nitrates of Agricultural Origin). The good correlation between the “Potential Agricultural Nitrate Contamination Risk Map” and the nitrate content distribution suggests that the source of the groundwater nitrate is chiefly related to intensive cropping or livestock. The results of isotope analysis confirm the hypothesis of the agricultural origin of nitrates and the validity of the use of parametric methods at medium/small scale to individuate the source of nitrate in groundwater.

Vengono delineate le caratteristiche chimiche delle acque sotterranee delle aree flegrea e vesuviana sulla scorta dell’ampia letteratura scientifica geologica ed idrogeologica disponibile, nonché di esperienze e ricerche personali. Si tratta in ogni caso di una panoramica generale che prescinde quindi da specifiche situazioni locali.

The study aims at applying a 3D lithologic model for the characterization of the Garigliano River plain aquifer and the assessment of the nitrate contamination risk . The risk map obtained presents a good spatial correlation with the nitrate content of the aquifer highlighting the sectors more affected by nitrates and supporting the individuation of the source of nitrate contamination. This suggests that the source of the groundwater nitrate is prevalently related to intensive cropping or livestock. The paper highlights the great advantage to use a 3D model of the subsoil of a alluvial plain (Garigliano basin) and the great results that it is possible to achieve. Indeed, the author would stress that the originality of this paper lies not in the application of the method to assess nitrate contamination risk, but rather in his application directly by the 3D lithostratigraphical model.

The study covers the sector of the Campanian Plain between the River Volturno and Mt. Massico. The hydrogeological system was defined in detail by analysing data from borehole stratigraphies and piezometric surveys. The extensive stratigraphic data acquired (more than 450 items) helped create the hydrogeological sections reported in the Map of Plate I. What emerges is the almost continuous presence throughout the area of Campanian Grey Tuff (IC): a greyish ashy rock associated with black scoriae and molten lava, with a variable degree of diagenesis and generally low permeability. IC crops out especially on the margin of the plain with fairly significant thickness (40-50 m) which become thinner, so as to almost disappear, towards the River Volturno. Chemical analysis of the water sampled from wells are indicated in the Plate II, which also reports the relevant groundwater chemistry maps. The Chemical Conductivity Map shows the predominance of values between 500 and 1000 μS/cm; lower values were obtained in aquifer sectors where there is no significant input from the limestone mountains and/or where the underground flow is coming from the Roccamonfina groundwater. Along the coast and in line with the bed of the River Volturno, saltwater contamination led to higher conductivity values. On the basis of the analytical data several areas with homogeneous chemical properties were able to be identified in the plain groundwater: - Zones a, stretching in discontinuous sectors at the foot of the limestone reliefs, collect the water from recent underground flows, which still bear the clear imprint of these aquifers. - Zones b, conditioned by the leaching of pyroclastic soils. - Zones c, located in the remaining part of the plain show a contributions, in different proportions, of the firsts two components. - Zones c', close to the river is a new zone substantially similar in lithology and sited downstream of the former (in terms of groundwater flow): nevertheless, the previous waters appear changed insofar as the local water has small quantities of sulphates and increases in the bicarbonate ion, due to reducing conditons. Contamination by nitrates, with values > 50 mg/L, is observed in the plain’s vast north/north-eastern sectors; towards the River Volturno the groundwater nitrates have fairly low concentrations, amounting to a few mg/L. The same distribution of values occurs for the SO4 ion which decreases from 30-40 mg/L to about one mg/L in the areas close to the river; in the same area, however, CO2 (and HCO3), Fe and Mn increase. Finally, the Aquifer Contamination Vulnerability Map stressed the importance of the depth to water and the vadose zone in the unconfined sectors.

Per vaste aree della piana di Sarno le misure piezometriche indicano una risalita dei livelli idrici in pozzi che negli anni precedenti mostravano un deciso abbassamento. Tali incrementi si ritengono riconducibili, in parte, alla maggiore piovosità registrata negli anni 2004/06 rispetto al passato. Un contributo significativo è poi derivato dall’aumento dei travasi sotterranei verso la piana (principalmente dal Somma-Vesuvio e dai rilievi di Sarno) dovuto all’accertata riduzione dei prelievi dai campi pozzi ivi presenti. Per la zona del T. Solofrana, malgrado la maggiore piovosità prima segnalata, il confronto con precedenti rilevazioni ha invece evidenziato che i livelli idrici attuali sono di alcuni metri più bassi. Questa situazione conferma che, nella zona, le risorse idriche sotterranee sono sottoposte ad una pressione antropica molto forte, come indicano anche la scomparsa di sorgenti o la forte riduzione di portata, e suggerisce l’adozione di un’attenta politica di gestione di tali risorse.

Sin dal 1990 le concentrazioni di nitrati nelle acque sotterranee nella zona di Acerra (Piana Campana) sono molto elevate e attualmente superano di gran lunga i limiti previsti dalla legislazione italiana e comunitaria. In questo lavoro sono stati utilizzati due differenti approcci per individuare l’origine dei nitrati nelle acque sotterranee. In primo luogo è stato valutato il rischio di inquinamento da nitrati nelle acque sotterranee sovrapponendo i tematismi relativi alla vulnerabilità e alla pericolosità. Per la vulnerabilità si è fatto riferimento al sistema parametrico SINTACS. La pericolosità è stata stimata mediante i modelli parametrici IPNOA (Indice di Pericolo da Nitrati di Origine Agricola) e IPNOC (Indice di Pericolo da Nitrati di Origine Civile), che considera il carico dovuto alle perdite fognarie e agli scarichi non allacciati ai sistemi fognari. Sempre al fine di individuare l’origine degli elevati contenuti in NO3 è stato effettuato uno studio isotopico e si sono considerati i rapporti 15N/14N e 18O/16O. Il confronto tra le due carte del Rischio Potenziale redatte secondo le metodologie IPNOA ed IPNOC e i risultati dell'analisi isotopica, talora in buon accordo con le indicazioni di rischio emerse dalle carte realizzate, incoraggiano a proseguire nella sperimentazione dei suddetti modelli parametrici per l’identificazione, a scala mediopiccola, dell’origine dei nitrati nelle falde.

Lo studio ha interessato il settore della Piana Campana esteso tra il F. Volturno ed il M.te Massico. E’ stato definito in dettaglio l’assetto idrogeologico anche con la raccolta e l’analisi di oltre 350 stratigrafie. L'acquifero principale della piana è stato identificato nei materiali piroclastico/sedimentari alla base del Tufo Grigio Campano poco permeabile presente con spessori variabili. La piezometria ed i dati idrochimici hanno consentito di individuare i settori, al bordo della piana, dove si verificano significativi apporti idrici sotterranei. I dati chimici hanno inoltre evidenziato i settori di falda contaminati da nitrati o dal mare e, lungo il Volturno, una vasta area caratterizzata da ambiente riducente. Il grado di Vulnerabilità all’inquinamento delle falde dipende prevalentemente dalla granulometria dei depositi sciolti e dalle condizioni di confinamento.

L’area di studio, comprende Acerra ed i comuni limitrofi di Casalnuovo e Pomigliano d’Arco. Tutti e tre questi comuni vengono indicati come vulnerabili da nitrati nella Delibera di Giunta Regionale n. 700 del 18 febbraio 2003 (Individuazione delle zone vulnerabili da nitrati di origine agricola ai sensi dell’art. 19 e dell’Allegato VII del D.Lgs. 152/99 e s.m.i.). Inoltre nell’ambito del Piano Regionale di Bonifica delle Aree Inquinate, redatto dalla Regione Campania nel 2005, il territorio del Comune di Acerra ricade tra le 12 aree che sono state individuate. Per l’areale sopra delineato è stata applicata una metodologia, di recente portata all’attenzione della comunità scientifica (Padovani & Trevisan, 2002), finalizzata alla valutazione del rischio di inquinamento da nitrati di origine agricola. Tale metodica prevede la realizzazione di più carte tematiche (es.: C. della vulnerabilità all’inquinamento degli acquiferi, C. dell’indice IPNOA etc.) che vengono fatte tra loro interagire in ambiente GIS secondo uno specifico algoritmo fino all’ottenimento della Carta finale del rischio. La carta del rischio potenziale di contaminazione da nitrati di origine agricola elaborata sulla base del metodo IPNOA mostra una buona correlazione spaziale con il contenuto in nitrati della falda principale. Ciò suggerisce che in questo settore l’origine dei nitrati è prevalentemente di origine agricola. In futuro, il lavoro svolto in ambiente GIS può consentire, anche attraverso studi di statistica spaziale fra aree contaminate e aree potenzialmente a rischio, di identificare quegli “indicatori” di contaminazione da nitrati di origine agricola della falda realmente significativi e quindi di implementare le metodologie di valutazione del rischio di inquinamento da nitrati.

La falda di base della dorsale carbonatica di Cancello alimentava due grosse scaturigini (Mofito e Calabricito) caratterizzate da un chimismo sensibilmente diverso rispetto a quello tipico di tali acquiferi. La Valle Caudina separa detta dorsale dai Monti di Durazzano, a nord, anch'essi carbonatici e ritenuti idrogeologica-mente non collegati ai rilievi meridionali. Tra l'altro, la falda di base di Durazzano (intercettata dai due campi pozzi di P/te Tavano) evidenzia un chimismo assai diverso rispetto a Cancello. Un altro campo pozzi è stato poi realizzato nella dorsale di Cancello. Col tempo le sorgenti si sono esaurite ed i dati raccolti fanno ritenere che tale evento sia legato anche agli attingimen-ti dai pozzi di Ponte Tavano: tra l'altro il chimismo di queste acque ha via via assunto connotazioni prossime a quello che caratterizzava le sorgenti Mofito e Calabricito.

This study deals with the aquifer risk map of an alluvial plain, located in southern Italy, highly urbanized and with an high level of groundwater contamination.

Nel settore meridionale di una cava a fossa, presente in sinistra del F. Volturno nei pressi di S. Angelo in Formis (Comune di Capua – CE), sono state rinvenute, interrate, notevoli quantità di RSU. Le indagini hanno tuttavia accertato che nella zona il degrado delle falde è relativamente contenuto ed ascrivibile, in primo luogo, al particolare assetto idrogeologico dell’area. Più in dettaglio: a) per la falda superficiale (direttamente interessata da accumuli di RSU) alla prossimità del definitivo recapi-to della stessa rappresentato dal F. Volturno; b) per la falda profonda all’esistenza di una favorevole situazione idrogeologica i cui elementi salienti sono la presenza, a tetto, di livelli scarsamente permeabili ed il verificarsi di una drenanza verso l’alto.

I metodi COP e SINTACS sono stati applicati a un’area campione per la costruzione delle Carte della Vulnerabilità degli acquiferi, nell’ambito dell’Approccio Europeo (COST 620 Action: Vulnerability and Risk Mapping for the Protection of Carbonate - Karst - Aquifers). L’area campione, il sistema carsico degli Alburni, è la più importante area carsica dell’Italia meridionale. Il confronto qualitativo e quantitativo tra le due Carte di vulnerabilità della risorsa idrica sotterranea, effettuato tramite la statistica spaziale, mostra marcate differenze. Il metodo COP risulta molto più severo, in quanto assegna grande importanza alle forme carsiche, laddove SINTACS mostra gradi di Vulnerabilità della risorsa idrica sotterranea più bassi.

Il metodo parametrico SINTACS è stato applicato nella pianura del fiume di Volturno (Italia meridionale), usando un GIS. L’acquifero principale è situato nelle unità porose alluvionali - piroclastiche sottostanti l’ ”Ignimbrite Campana". La falda viene ricaricata per infiltrazione diretta e per travaso sotterraneo dai rilievi adiacenti, come evidenziato dal panneggio piezometrico (ricostruito sulla scorta di 700 punti d’acqua). Il grado di vulnerabilità prevalente è medio; la vulnerabilità è alta nell’area costiera, dove la granulometria del non saturo e dell’acquifero è maggiore, e nelle aree pedemontane. Le falde superficiali hanno valori di vulnerabilità più alti, a causa della scarsa soggiacenza.

The Water Framework Directive protects groundwater and sets ambitious objectives for its quality and quantity. In particular, the Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of The Council of 23 October 2000 establishes an exact definition of groundwater chemical status on the basis of the chemical parameters values. Otherwise, the directive only defines the Good Groundwater Quantity Status when the available groundwater resource is not exceeded by the long-term annual average rate of abstraction. Even the Italian Laws concerning water monitoring and protection, and including technical regulation for groundwater monitoring of the Italian territory, the “D. Lgs. 152/1999 and the D. Lgs. 258/2000”, do not provide guidelines for the groundwater quantitative status assessment. In order to construct the groundwater quantitative status map a new method has been performed and applied to the territory of the district authority “Autorità di Bacino Nord-Occidentale della Campania”.

The groundwater contamination risk map of the aquifer underlying the Middle Volturno River plain was produced using a Geographical Information System (GIS) to construct and to overlay thematic maps. The risk map was derived from the vulnerability map, the hazard map, showing agricultural and industrial potential contaminating sources, as well as the socio-economic value of the groundwater resource. The final map shows interesting results and stresses the need for the GIS to test and improve on the groundwater contamination risk assessment methods.
