CITIES & towns in art , *PERFORMANCE art , *COVID-19 pandemic , *FEMINISM , *WALKING - Abstract
This text explores the evolving landscape of performance art in the face of pandemic restrictions, shedding light on the repercussions of audience deprivation and the subsequent exploration of digital platforms as a means of artistic expression. Focusing on some artistic performances of Alisa Oleva, the text investigates how her exploration of touching and walking as a medium influences the understanding of urban landscapes. By using the city as her studio and manipulating everyday life, Oleva uncovers the hidden stories and meanings embedded within inside and outside spaces, to examine questions related to women's histories, traces, and surfaces. In particular, we focus on Walking Home (2020), a performance that, in addition to providing an interesting example of walking as an aesthetic practice, raises political and activist questions, such as how the pandemic-induced confinement masks deeper issues, namely the safety of the domestic environment for those who identify themself as women. Through various performances, we delve into the theme of seeing and touching, emphasising the significance of sensory perception as embodied human beings. Moreover, the text highlights how our passages and connections with different environments contribute to shaping the very meaning of the places we encounter in the world. In addition, the text acknowledges the transformative power of personal experiences in crafting the narrative of our collective story. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While new buildings continue to emerge in the process of urbanization, historical buildings, as valuable legacies carrying national historical memory, play an important role in the urban landscape. Previous studies have shown that color harmony is a crucial factor in coordinating urban landscapes. However, the evaluation of color harmony in historic areas and buildings lacks effective quantitative standards, often overlooking factors such as complementary color harmony and the compatibility of analogous colors. This study aims to build a new method to evaluate the color harmony of historical buildings through street view technology, semantic segmentation algorithms, quantification of color harmony methods based on image property detection and classification, questionnaire verification, and takes Shanghai's historical buildings as an example to explore. Our study categorizes six types of color harmony indexes for Shanghai street-facing historic buildings into three levels, with the top tier serving as a benchmark for excellence and the lowest tier highlighting areas in need of urban environmental improvement. This study uniquely considers color compatibility within hue ranges and expanded relationship types like complementary harmony. This approach, applicable to cities globally, offers practical tools for urban planners and conservators in managing and preserving historic areas and buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CITIES & towns in art ,FRACTAL dimensions - Abstract
The townscape is a blend of traditional and modern elements, forged over different time periods and styles. Some components harken back to the texture of the past, while others challenge easy recognition. The central question is how the complexity of physical identity-imparting townscapes, inherently older than their modern counterparts, can be elucidated in comparison to other elements. This research aims to gauge the complexity of an urban street scene using a qualitative and quantitative approach, employing field sampling in the historical context of Kermanshah city. Utilizing 14 images across seven historical townscapes and elements added to these townscapes in various periods, the fractal dimension of the images has been computed at three scales: figure, face, and facade. The research findings of Kermanshah city reveal that historical urban townscapes predominantly exhibit greater physical complexity than newly constructed areas. Moreover, an assessment of urban townscape complexity across these three scales indicates that physical complexity remains more steadfast in historical urban townscapes compared to newer counterparts. In essence, townscapes evolve to become richer and more physically complex over time, contingent upon newer additions contributing to the continuity of their physical-visual content rather than eradicating and replacing them. In townscapes characterized by higher complexity, the similarity between new and old elements surpasses differentiation, unity prevails overabundance, and the degree of continuity surpasses transformation. Calculating complexity serves as a valuable tool for monitoring damage to the city's historical landmarks and devising solutions for sustaining identity, continuity, and the connection between the present and the future. This article analyses the katabasis mytheme in Margaret Drabble's The Seven Sisters (2002), laying special emphasis on her contemporary revisionist reimagining of the Aeneid. A dialogue with Virgil's male-centred epic poem becomes both a starting point and a destination when death is just around the corner, intimated and sublimated as it is by London, a city that correlates to the Virgilian Underworld as a dark, damp topos, plagued by grotesque lost souls wandering about its liminal spaces. This close reading of the trope will not only provide a critical insight into Drabble's subversive reworking of Aeneas's descent to the Underworld from a female-centred perspective, but will also explore how the mythical resignification of the London urban landscape mediates an ongoing redefinition of women's old age and its tense power relations with the past, the present and the future. Based on the theme of sexual predation and violence, Samidha Gunjal's short story Someday, anthologised in Drawing the Line (2015), is a visual narration of a well-dressed woman walking through an urban landscape. During her journey, she is subjected to sexual harassment as she gets catcalled and whistled at by the men around her. Eventually, she arrives at a place depicted as an all-male terrain that transforms into a realm of predators as the men metamorphosize into rapacious beings with egregious physiognomy. Overwhelmed by these men who grow into enormous predators, the woman shrinks into nothingness and is eventually rendered invisible. At this juncture, when her sexual harassment escalates, the woman, too, undergoes a transmutation and emerges as goddess Kali to overthrow her abusers. While deploying the theories propounded by stalwarts including Foucault, Goffman, McCloud, and Chute, this paper attempts to decode Gunjal's visual narrative to understand its radical feminist stance. It undertakes a critical exposition of the representation of violent (vagina dentata) and non-violent (naked protest) modes of resistance and how the iconography of goddess Kali embedded in its visuals challenges despotic patriarchal constructions that render women powerless. CITIES & towns in art ,DOCUMENTARY filmmakers ,POVERTY ,SLUMS - Abstract
Documentaries are a medium for capturing the reality of people by constructing their everyday life. They are narratives told using sound and moving pictures that highlight the world's wonder, complexity, and contradictions. These moving photographs visually express the life of people, the hardships and the events revolving around them. Non-fiction films dramatise factual information to the readers instead of presenting creatively, and are compelling, informative and appreciated as they represent the events without moulding them. Documentaries attempt to enlighten, educate, and raise awareness by utilising interviews, archive material, reenactments, and narration. They also present a non-fictional perspective that frequently challenges and broadens viewers' perception of the world. The documentaries epitomise the social, cultural and economic facets by portraying the lives of people living in different parts of the world. The present paper studies how cities are represented through documentaries and analyses non-fiction films as a platform for encapsulating the authenticity of the select cities. The analysis includes documentaries Calcutta (1969) by Louis Malle, Bombay Our City by Anand Patwardhan and Dilli by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh. The study attempts to understand the economic disparity, social problems and other struggles in the lives of people living in cities through documentaries made on Indian metropolitan cities. Critical image comparison is a widespread art‐historical practice. This essay explores why a Brabantine artist encouraged viewers to exercise it in the late fifteenth century. At the time, northern European artists tested out how images could be means of transcending the visible world while simultaneously showcasing their very constructedness. The self‐reflexivity that characterises such images has engendered a particularly rich field of art‐historical studies. This essay focuses on a little‐known image which was designed to combine two visual concepts devised more than three centuries apart – a twelfth‐century map of Jerusalem, and a cityscape popularised in the fifteenth century – and required viewers to realise this combination in their minds, using external images recollected before their internal eyes. In its complex conception, the image becomes a unique contributor to the vibrant debate about the right use of images in late medieval devotion, and to the long history of image comparisons. This paper considers some aspects of the way historic public space is understood in England, drawing on a selection of relevant guidance and research published by Historic England. This builds a picture of how public spaces are dealt with in official heritage publications in England, and how this relates to international discussion, particularly the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) approach. This is followed by some reflections on figure-ground mapping, which leads to a brief discussion of the "Townscape" campaign of The Architectural Review. The paper concludes with reflections on the implications for conservation arising from broader perception of city as cultural landscape. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite its medieval origins (1423), the city of Łódź is young. It flourished as an important industrial center in the nineteenth century, becoming the second largest city in Poland in the twentieth. Its "American" plan with one main street and districts developing around factories is unusual in Poland and leaves little room for city squares and public space. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, Łódź has been trying to create more shared areas because they underwent far-reaching degradation after the transformatio of 1989 and the economic crisis of the 1990s. Nowadays, however, these areas are being revitalized. There are many competitions and projects concerning both the rehabilitation of existing city squares and the creation of new ones. However, the term "city square" has largely lost its original, traditional meaning, with "square" now covering a variety of open spaces, ranging from pedestrian streets to courtyards. The article discusses selected examples of municipal and private investments in squares, streets and parks. Despite the positive reception of these urban changes, the "renewal" of the city is criticized by specialists and considered controversial. The article attempts to analyze these solutions in terms of urban planning as well as urban landscape and ecology, also venturing to gauge whether such solutions can be considered modern and adequate to the requirements of twenty-first-century urban planning. CITIES & towns in art - Abstract
This paper examines the transnational cityscapes of Paris and Beijing in the Sino-French urban-set film Love and Bruises directed by Lou Ye, one of the so-called Sixth Generation of Chinese filmmakers. Drawing on the method of textual analysis and Deleuzian theories of affect, it explores how these two global cities are depicted as dystopian and illusive utopian places respectively, how the cityscapes are connoted, and how they are charged with affects. The author argues that Lou's imaginaries of transnational cityscapes insinuate individuals' bruises of displacement and dislocation in an era of active integration into globalisation. Moreover, cityscapes are presented phenomenologically and affectively in the film by screening the protagonists' act of viewing and the camera's lingering on the urban spaces. Finally, the cityscapes of Paris transmit a sense of estrangement or alienation, while Beijing's counterparts provoke postmodern bewilderment and anxiety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban art has been and continues to be a transforming component within urban renewal processes, reinforcing memory, recovering the sense of place, and reducing stigmatization. This article delves into the role of urban art within the (physical-spatial) requalification and (symbolic) resignification processes in Urban Working-Class Settlements, analyzing how these processes are related to strengthening place attachment, sense of belonging, sense of security, and community organization, and trying to reflect on how they can affect deeper lying issues such as social and environmental risk. The methodology used is participatory action research, which was developed with the Santa Lucía Community in the Historic Center of San Salvador. Although the limitations of urban art are clear in the face of complex problems such as urban violence and environmental risk, the case of Santa Lucía reflects the potential of these interventions when they emerge as a collective and consensual expression, becoming an instrument of citizen vindication, strengthening community ties and organization. There is an increasingly significant trove of observational sketches being used by illustrators as a visual research method to document and depict community and city interactions. Illustration, for me, serves as a potent, participatory tool of visual research that catalyses such transformative conversations and bolsters relationships within the community fabric. The act of drawing goes beyond rendering an image; it fosters a way to capture, record and create multifaceted interactions between people and their environments. The focus of this article is my community research project, Barter Archive (2019–22), an initiative that employs illustration as a transitional medium, moving from mere record-keeping to constructing a visual repository of collective memory. By inviting community members to participate in the process, 'Barter Archive' aims to advance understanding of the intrinsic potential that illustration holds. The project underscores its function as a metaphorical method, one that can substantively shape the collective memory. Moreover, the central argument presented here is that traditional models of archiving our collective memory require innovation, demanding greater inclusivity and accessibility. To this end, the illustration-based 'Barter Archive' presents an alternative approach to conventional archival methods. It engages the collective community in a participatory process that ultimately enhances memory-making and preservation practices, making them more accessible across the social spectrum. In conclusion, the importance of evolving and enhancing traditional archiving methods cannot be overstressed, as they play a crucial role in the preservation and inclusivity of collective memory. The 'Barter Archive' project, through its unique use of illustration, reinvents the conventional processes attached to archival practices. It provides a platform where community members can actively participate and contribute to collective memory-making, subsequently fostering a better understanding of the power and potential of illustration. Implementing this innovative and transformative approach could revolutionize the archiving landscape, making it more participatory, representative and inclusive, ultimately enriching the collective memory tapestry of communities and cityscapes. Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) identifies an urban area due to its cultural and natural values and the qualities of its historical plane. Within this context, this article aims to determine and categorize these values used in the HUL approach as indicators. The research question focuses on finding specific indicators used in the HUL approach to measuring change beyond considering natural and cultural heritage values in the landscape context. These indicators in 228 peer-reviewed publications implementing the HUL from 2008 to 2021 are assessed. The six-step inclusive and exclusive theoretical framework is established as a method in this article to detect the inadequate implementations of HUL in case studies. The initial finding of this article is that the adequacy of using the HUL approach in publications is questionable as the implementation of the HUL approach processes was incomplete or misunderstood in most of them. Only 29 articles of the 228 publications implemented the HUL approach in its entirety. The other finding is that when the change measurement indicators in the HUL approach are examined, it is evident that natural indicators were the least used group compared to cultural and identity indicators. Each cultural, natural, and identity indicator group should be utilized evenly to implement the HUL approach adequately. This article presents a fundamental indicator list that includes cultural, natural, and identity groups for correctly using the HUL approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To improve human well-being, there is a growing awareness of enhancing aesthetic benefits through landscape design, planning and management. Monitoring long-term changes can play a significant role in the direction of urban management. This study aims to visually evaluate the aesthetic quality of the Tabriz metropolis landscape and monitor changes in Landscape aesthetic quality (LAQ). LAQ is assessed based on visual scale, naturalness, stewardship, historicity, complexity, disturbance, ephemera, and imageability. Using multiple temporal satellite images and landscape metrics, we analyze land use changes between 1984 and 2020. The results reveal that urbanization has led to landscape fragmentation and loss of coherence over the past three decades. Additionally, we calculate the weights of the criteria using the CRITIC1 method, highlighting the changing importance of different factors. In addition, we calculate the weights of the criteria using the CRITIC method and highlight the variable importance of different factors. Then, by overlaying the layers and multiplying by the obtained weights, we draw the LAQ map for different years. The results are historicity with a coefficient of 0.22, naturalness 0.15, Disturbance 0.14, and coherence. 0.14, ephemera 0.13, complexity 0.11, and visual scale 0.11 in 1984. For the year 2020, the coefficient for historicity is 0.13, naturalness is 0.18, disturbance is 0.11, coherence is 0.10, ephemera is 0.10, complexity is 0.12, and visual scale is 0.26 Historicity and naturalness hold the greatest weights in 1984, while visual scale and naturalness receive the highest weights in 2020. Significant changes are observed in districts 9 and 1, while districts 7 and 6 show minor adjustments. The findings provide valuable insights for improving ecological networks in future urban planning in Tabriz. Urban management should consider these calculations to enhance the LAQ index. It is intended to open a debate on two different issues: the landscape of Puerto de Menesteo in the time of Strabo and the possibility of the winery of Puerto de Menesteo in the current Sierra de San Cristóbal being walled. In the first case, the interpretation of Strabo’s text made by Pepa Castillo and Pilar Iguácel on the situation of the island cited in the passage which mentions the communication between Puerto de Menesteo and Asta is questioned. The second theme focuses on the design of the complex excavated in the Sierra de San Cristóbal as a wine production unit (winery), its parallelism with the Alt de Benimaquía (Denia, Alicante), and the possibility that it is walled. This paper provides a qualitative account of Vietnamese language maintenance in Manchester. Through ethnographic observations of distinctly Vietnamese locations, Vietnamese language practices are shown to create spaces in which Vietnamese is the dominant language, and in which Vietnamese norms and expectations, or scales, are able to influence and contest other behavioural norms. These scales are viewed as social practices, and they are derived from interviews with Vietnamese speakers and observations of Vietnamese spaces, and special focus is given to the linguistic resources used to conduct them. The analysis reveals ideas of language competence and politeness which compete and interact with norms from outside the spaces, and non-linguistic behavioural norms which contribute to language maintenance. Vietnamese is shown to be maintained through micro-interactions which make the heritage language the norm, and business and religious practices are found to promote heritage language use by requiring heritage language practices to participate. Airbnb is commonly seen as emblematic of the disruptive forces of peer-to-peer platforms, and often attracts attention due to its relationship to existing socio-institutional frameworks. This article investigates how existing societal structures are navigated, remade or challenged through Airbnb hosting. In taking a performative approach to the economic forms found in collaborative economies, this article introduces a novel way of thinking about such changes. In examining performances of Airbnb hosts performances this article endeavours to move beyond distinctions of commercial, cultural and private, but rather perceives such categories as performatively constructed through ongoing framings. Through 33 qualitative interviews with hosts in Copenhagen, Denmark and Philadelphia, United States, this article explores how hosting becomes entangled with social and institutional frameworks through host performances. First, the article explores host strategies for navigating and making sense of local legislation. Second, the article moves to the theme of taxation and discusses how hosts balance public obligations with personal profit. Finally, the article addresses how hosting is negotiated in relation to neighbour relations and implications for local communities. The article contributes with insights into how Airbnb hosting is transforming urban landscapes, as well as discussions on the heterogeneity of economies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reflects on urban cultural development in a post-Soviet context. Most literature on arts and the city focuses either on Western cities, often recovering from post-industrial decline, or emerging global cities. However, post-socialist cities have remained under-investigated. The paper argues that the existing accounts of urban cultural development often underestimate the impact of national policy frameworks and historical trajectories. In post-Soviet countries, these national dynamics—often responding to broader diplomatic and cultural shifts—need to be considered. The paper uses the case study of Kazakhstan and its two major cities Almaty and Astana (recently renamed Nur-Sultan) to explore the role of path dependence and national policy in urban cultural development. It concludes by arguing for integrating a complexity perspective into the study of arts and the city, looking at macro policy and infrastructural changes, meso local urban responses, and micro dynamics of collaboration and work amongst creative and cultural practitioners in cities. This paper uncovers the local state's complex intersections with the market and its multifaceted relations with the public through an in-depth qualitative case study of municipal housing privatization and urban renewal in one of the heartlands of the Swedish welfare state project, Rosengård in Malmö, Sweden. Drawing on the political-economic literature, I argue that housing privatization is entangled with complex interrelations among the (municipal) local state, the market, and the public and that an exploration of these relations reveals contemporary features of the local state. Hence, this investigation highlights the local state's motivation for privatization, the remaking of a market in a place where the market is believed to have failed, and the powers the local state retains. Additionally, the paper elucidates how the function of public assets changes due to privatization and considers tenants' and residents' worries, criticism, and concerns about municipal interventions. Subsequently, by grounding these findings in the historical function of municipalities in Sweden, the study contributes new knowledge on the local state in a deepened neoliberalized and financialized urban landscape. Intervening in the revitalization and development of art villages is one of the ways to build regional brands in rural areas, fit in with contemporary aesthetics, and meet the needs of modern people for diversified life. At the same time, it is not limited by artistry itself, but a comprehensive artistic activity with modernity, industrial linkage, and sustainability. This paper uses the HPR (Hestenes–Powell–Rockafellar) multiplier method to solve and establishes a SSFCM-HPR (semisupervised fuzzy C-means clustering based on HPR) algorithm. The experimental results on datasets show that FCM-UserCF (fuzzy C-means-user collaborative filtering) algorithm effectively solves the problem of data sparsity and improves the accuracy of recommendation. Rural planning and design under the intervention of art is a kind of respect for local memory, an inheritance of folk crafts, a reshaping of history and culture, and an identification with the countryside itself. It also puts forward new development ideas and guiding methods for the sustainable development of rural areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pampulha Modern Ensemble is an urban complex located in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, whose metropolitan context is highly problematic due to the pressures of urban dynamics, impacts from urban development and the need to manage changes and preserve architectural and landscape attributes that have led to its recognition as World Heritage. This article is part of a larger study that investigates the community's recognition of the values conferred by experts on that complex's cultural landscape as a world heritage site. Due to the restrictive conditions imposed by the COVID 19 pandemic, an online questionnaire with open access to the general public was used as an instrument for the field research to collect primary data from the community. The analysis of the answers obtained from the questionnaire pre-test, object of this article, demonstrates the recognition of landscape elements and of the Pampulha Modern Ensemble that contribute to its enjoyment and that characterize it as a differentiated landscape in the context of the city.
