In this study, we aim to implement an intelligent automatic notification system based on Bluetooth beacons and smartphones to prevent accidents caused by children being left in vehicles while commuting to school during summer or winter. This is a problem that is emerging as safety accidents occur owing to negligence in vehicles. Although teachers solutions, such as checking children’s attendance, safety accidents occur freq uently every year. Because the continuous occurrence of safety accidents, parents’ anxiety about accidents is increasing, and various accident prevention measures are being developed to solve this problem. However, these methods are difficult to implement as teachers have to manage a large number of children. To solve this problem, this study implements an intelligent automatic notification system based on Bluetooth beacons and smartphones. This notification system attaches a relatively low-power Bluetooth beacon to the child’s belongings to recognize boarding and disembarking using the teacher’s smartphone, and sends a message to the parent’s smartphone. Introduction: Trauma is the leading cause of paediatric mortality and morbidity. Stay-home regulations for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) reportedly changed trauma severity, yet data from Hong Kong were lacking. This study examined Hong Kong's spectrum of paediatric trauma and addressed knowledge gaps concerning epidemiological changes during COVID-19. Methods: Children with traumatic injuries who attended a tertiary trauma centre from January 2010 to March 2022 were included in this retrospective, cross-sectional study. We analysed demographic and clinical data and conducted unadjusted bivariate analyses of injury patterns before and after the pandemic. Results: In total, 725 children attended the Accident and Emergency Department due to trauma, 585 before and 140 during COVID-19. The male-to-female ratio was 1.84:1. The 90-day trauma-related mortality was 0.7%. The overall Injury Severity Score was 3.52 ± 5.95. The paediatric trauma incidence was similar before and after social-distancing policies (both 5.8 cases monthly). Gender, ISS distribution, intensive care unit stay length, and hospital stay length values were similar (p > 0.05). Trauma call activation (8.4% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.002) and road traffic accidents (10.6% vs. 5.7%, p = 0.009) significantly decreased, yet younger-patient injuries (< 10 years old; 85.7% vs. 71%, p < 0.001), burns (28% vs. 45.7%, p < 0.001), and domestic injuries (65.5% vs. 85.7%, p < 0.001) significantly increased. No significant self-harm, assault, or abuse increases were found. Conclusions: The paediatric trauma incidences were similar before and during the pandemic. Children involved in car crashes can experience either direct trauma or inertial injuries resulting from interactions with external objects, such as other vehicles, or with the restraint system. Furthermore, improper use of restraint systems can lead to additional severe injuries. Recent reports from international institutions underscored the persistent prevalence of inadequate restraint systems utilization and this widespread issue increases children's vulnerability and risk of injuries. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic review of the literature on injuries sustained in children involved in road accidents describing and analyzing elements useful for forensic assessment. The literature search was performed using PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science from January 1970 to March 2023. Eligible studies have investigated issues of interest to forensic medicine about traffic accidents involving pediatric passengers. A total of 69 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria and were categorized and analyzed according to the anatomical regions of the body affected (head, neck, thoraco-abdominal, and limb injuries), and the assessment of lesions in reconstruction of the accident was examined and discussed. The review highlights that in motor vehicle accidents involving children, the forensic evaluation of both the cause of death and accident dynamics needs to consider several factors, such as the child's age, the type of restraint system employed, and the specific passenger seat occupied. Considering the complexity of the factors that can be involved in this road accident, it is crucial that there is a comprehensive exchange of information between the judge and the medical expert. Background: One of the main causes of injury and death in children under 5 years of age is accidents. Lack of awareness about preventive measures against these accidents and having a belief that these accidents are inevitable are major issues in Iran. This study aims to investigate and categorize the interventions recommended for preventing accidents in children under 5 years of age. Materials and Methods: This scoping review was conducted in 2023. A search was conducted for the related studies in databases including Scopus, ISI, MEDLINE, Embase, Proquest, Cochrane Library, Emerald, MagIran, IranDoc, MoH thesis database and MoH articles database using the keywords "incident", "accident," "emergency," "injury," "disaster," "road traffic," "child," "intervention," "preparedness," and "prevention." The search was conducted on studies published in English or Persian, from 2000 to 2023. To assess the quality of the selected articles, the critical appraisal skills program (CASP) checklist was used. The data were analyzed using content analysis method in MAXQDA software, version 20. Results: The initial search yielded 1495 articles. After removing duplicates and irrelevant articles, and reading abstracts, and full texts, 41 studies (3 theses and 38 articles) were selected for the review. We produced 234 codes, 45 for interventions to prevent man-made disasters, 157 for interventions to prevent domestic accidents, 18 for interventions to prevent burn and electrical accidents and 14 for interventions to prevent traffic accidents. Conclusion: To prevent accidents in children under five years of age, there is a need for comprehensive efforts. Proper education for parents, teaching children about safe behaviors, installing appropriate safety equipment, and paying attention to the living environment of children can help reduce accidents in these children. When a child is harmed, parents frequently experience condemnation and blame from others. This blame is amplified online. Our online worlds reflect our offline ones, and this negative atmosphere toward parents can influence both parents themselves and societal expectations for parents. Previous research on parental blame has either directly asked people about their blame attributions or utilized hypothetical vignettes. Our thematic analysis expands on this research by analyzing unsolicited online comments left on news stories about two, real-world incidents of child harm: A child who fell into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo, and a child who was killed by an alligator at Walt Disney World. We aimed to understand (1) What are people's views and opinions of the parents of the child victims? and (2) Do these views and opinions differ between the CZ and DW events? Our results show three similar themes between these incidents: It Wouldn't Happen to Me, Parenting Abilities and Actions, and Support, and two themes which differed between the incidents: Qualified blame/Sympathy and Punishment. Objective: To determine the frequency and types of home accidents in children, to evaluate the first aid application knowledge level of parents in case of a possible home accident and its relationship with health literacy. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted between November and December 2022, among parents with children aged 1-14 in the Central district of Kütahya province. Data collection form: The survey form consisted of the Self-Efficacy of First Aid Scale for Home Accidents and the Health Literacy Scale. Results: Of the 444 people who participated in the research; 175 of them (39.5%) are between the ages of 17-30, and 268 of them (60.5%) are aged 31 and over. Two hundred ninety-two (67.0%) of the participants are women. Frequency of home accidents in the last year; It was found to be 63.9% (n:133) in the age range of 1-4 years, 61.0% (n:122) in the age range of 5-6 years, and 58.1% (n:115) in the age range of 7-14 years. The most common types of accidents are "fall, slip" and "crash, sprain, injury". A weak positive correlation was found between the Self-Efficacy of First Aid Scale for Home Accidents score and the Health Literacy Scale score (r:0.116, p:0.014). Conclusion: Adopting the approach of increasing the level of health literacy in interventions to be given to parents regarding home accidents and first aid in children may increase the positive effect of the intervention. In ncent decades, judges have increasingly incorporated juvenile brain science into legal rulings. Courts have acknowledged scientific facts, such as the typical human brain not fully developing until approximately twenty-six years old. Meanwhile, scientists have made significant strides in learning how early childhood trauma affects the physical structure and development of the brain. Should courts begin to take into account the impact of early childhood trauma upon the juvenile brain as well?. In this Article, I draw from a line of ground-breaking cases in the United States Supreme Court. The cases began to follow a pattern where the Cow·t was increasingly recognizing brain science as significant to its legal rulings. Lower federal courts and state courts are following suit as well. I posit that the nextfrontier should be trauma-informed and brain-informedjudicial decision making. With the scientific knowledge that trauma rewires the brain physiologically, courts and the legal system need to take juvenile trai¢ma into account when assessing cases. To support the development and incorporation of trauma science into the law, I provide research, such as a comprehensive longitudinal stu* from Swedens Karolinska Institute, the Center for Disease Control k articulationofadversechildhood experiences (ACEs), and the trauma brain science work of Dr. Bruce Perry and Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. Objective Little is known about the symptoms, signs, and management guidelines for children under the age of 6 years after they sustain a concussion. Caregivers of such young children may have unique concerns and encounter different challenges from those of school-age children given the distinctive developmental characteristics of the early childhood period. This study aimed to explore the experience of caregivers through semistructured interviews to inform clinical practice. Methods Fifty caregivers of children aged 6 months to 5.99 years were interviewed 3 months postinjury for this qualitative study to document their experience in relation to their child's accident, recovery, and healthcare provisions. Results Four main themes were identified: (1) visible changes associated with caregiver concerns, (2) a roller-coaster of emotions after the injury, (3) healthcare providers' role in addressing the need for reassurance, and (4) the need for better information after the injury. Conclusion The findings provide critical insight into the unique experiences and information needs of caregivers of young children who sustain concussion. The challenges identified can inform healthcare professionals regarding the needs of caregivers after early concussion and contribute to building a knowledge base for the development of age-appropriate anticipatory guidance for caregiver mental health and child recovery. Transfusion transmissible infections (TTIs) remain a major health challenge particularly in developing countries. Here, we present a multicentered hospital‐based retrospective study on the prevalence, distribution, and risk factors of TTIs in Ghana. Data on blood donors from four health facilities, namely Nkwanta South Municipal Hospital (Oti region), Weija‐Gbawe Municipal Hospital (Greater Accra region), SDA Hospital (Northern region) and Wa Municipal Hospital (Upper West region) were extracted and analyzed. Descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression were applied to compare sociodemographic data with TTI status. A total of 6094 blood donors were included in this study, and 2% were females. The overall prevalence of TTIs was 21.0% (1232/5868). Specifically, the prevalence of HBV, HCV, HIV, and Syphilis was 6.6% (385/5868), 4.9% (286/5830), 2.9% (168/5867), and 6.8% (393/5739), respectively. Wa dominated in all the viral agents considered in this study, while the Oti region recorded the highest prevalence in T. pallidum. The odds of HBV infection was 3.1 (p = 0.008) among first‐time donors, while that for HCV was 2.8 (p = 0.042). For rural dwellers, donors significantly had T. pallidum (p < 0.001; OR = 2.8), HCV (p < 0.001; OR = 2.9), and HIV (p = 0.028; OR = 1.5) infections. Generally, the recipients of transfused blood were predominantly pregnant mothers, followed by children and accident victims. This study has revealed significant disparities and relatively high prevalence of TTIs in Ghana, specifically HBV, HCV, HIV and T. pallidum infections. Accidents are the main cause of injury in children, more than half events happen at home. Aims of this study were to assess if SARS-CoV-2 lockdown influence emergency department (ED) visits due to children domestic accident (DAs) and to identify factors associated with hospitalization. This was a multicentre, observational, and retrospective cohort study involving 16 EDs in Italy and enrolling children (3–13 years) receiving a visit in ED during March–June 2019 and March–June 2020. Risk factors for hospitalization were identified by logistic regression models. In total, 8860 ED visits due to domestic accidents in children occurred before (4380) and during (4480) lockdown, with a mean incidence of DA of 5.6% in 2019 and 17.9% in 2020 (p < 0.001) (IRR: 3.16; p < 0.001). The risk of hospitalization was influenced by the type of occurred accident, with fourfold higher for poisoning and twofold lower risk for stab-wound ones. In addition, a higher risk was reported for lockdown period vs 2019 (OR: 1.9; p < 0.001), males (OR: 1.4; p < 0.001), and it increased with age (OR: 1.1; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The main limitation of this study is the retrospective collection of data, available only for patients who presented at the hospital. This does highlight possible differences in the total number of incidents that truly occurred. In any case, the COVID-19 lockdown had a high impact on the frequency of DAs and on hospitalization. A public health campaign aimed at caregivers would be necessary to minimize possible risks at home. What is Known: • In Italy, domestic accidents are the second leading cause of paediatric mortality after cancer. • During the first SARS-CoV-2 lockdown in 2020, a sharp decrease in the total number of Emergency Departments visits for all causes was observed, both in children and in adults. Aim: Unintentional children injuries at home are the leading cause of deaths or disability. Safety practice is the most effective strategy to prevent home related injury or death. These injuries and accidents in children are particularly fatal because most of these injuries can be prevented with awareness and appropriate practices. This study aimed to detect the availability of safety preventive measures at home for children, and to examine whether factors such as parents' educational level and household income of the family are associated with better safety practices. Methodology: This was a quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study conducted amongst 344 parents and guardians about the availability of safety measures at home for children aged 2-18 years old in Makkah region. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Item includes demographic characteristics, parents' personal precautions, home precautions, and common home related injuries. Results: Parents' knowledge and awareness of personal home safety precautions were higher than average >60. Burns were the highest home related injury found by 11.6% of participation. Toxicity was the lowest home injury by 0.9%. Two thirds 67.4% of the respondents were not exposed to any type of injury. There was a moderate positive correlation between family household income and parents' preventive practice. Conclusion: In the current study, parents' preventive practice related to unintentional child home injuries was higher, however, they applied the procedures of personal precautions more than the home precautions. Objectives: This study investigates causes, characteristics and temporal trends of paediatric major trauma over a 10-year period and assesses potential preventive areas. Methods: Single-centre retrospective study of paediatric trauma patients admitted to a Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) in a tertiary university hospital in Europe with a level 1 paediatric trauma centre, from 2009 to 2019. Paediatric major trauma patients were defined as patients aged < 18 years with Injury Severity Score > 12, admitted for intensive care for more than 24 h following trauma. Demographic, social and clinical information, including place and mechanism of trauma, injury pattern, pre-hospital and in-hospital procedures, and length of stay in PICU was extracted from PICU medical records. Results: Total 358 patients included (age 11 ± 4,9 years; 67% male); 75% were involved in road traffic accidents: 30% motor vehicle collision, 25% pedestrian, 10% motorcycle and bicycle each. Falls from height injured 19% of children, 4% during sports activities. Main injuries were to head/neck (73%) and extremities (42%). The incidence of major trauma was highest in teenagers and did not show a decreasing trend during the study years. All fatalities (1,7%; n = 6) were related to head/neck injuries. Motor vehicle collisions resulted in higher need for blood transfusion (9 vs. 2 mL/kg, p = 0,006) and the highest ICU-mortality (83%; n = 5). Children in motorcycle accidents had longer ICU length-of-stay (6,4 vs. 4,2 days, p = 0,036). Pedestrians had 25% higher risk of head/neck injuries (RR 1,25; 1,07 − 1,46; p = 0,004), and higher incidence of severe brain injury (46% vs. 34%, p = 0,042). Most children in motor-vehicle/bicycle accidents were not using restraints/protective devices (45%) or were using them inappropriately (13%). Conclusions: Over the last decade, the absolute numbers of paediatric major trauma did not decrease. Road traffic accidents remain the leading cause of injury and death. Teenagers are at highest risk for severe trauma. Appropriate use of child restraints and protective equipment remain key for prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are many cases in the construction industry when decision making related to the specific elements of the single-family houses is left to the property owners. The choice of the internal stairs design is one of them. While stair-related injuries are among the most common reasons for children's accidents at home, stair safety awareness in different target groups becomes an important matter to prevent kid injuries in domestic environments. Eleven staircase parameters affecting children's safety in single-family houses were determined in this study. The online survey dedicated to collecting and assessing the importance of these parameters was constructed and spread in Lithuania. The new modification of the VASMA (Visual Analogue Scale Matrix for Criteria Weighting) methodology called VASMA-C was proposed to analyse collected data and to expose opinions differences in three target groups: experts in the field, apartment residents and house residents living with children. The comparative study disclosed that staircase landing is the parameter whose importance among the expert and non-expert evaluators differs the most. It was also revealed that apartment residents have the most divergent understanding of staircase safety compared with the rest of the target groups. These findings indicate that different customers need diverse information about the staircase parameters affecting children's health and the stair vendors should be aware of these demands. The article addresses the topic of road safety in the area of educational units, respectively the effect of road traffic. The aim of the study is to clearly highlight the causality between road accidents involving children as victims and road systematization. To achieve our main objectives, we used as a research method the analysis of documents: Road Accident Database, an application of the Romanian Police in which all traffic incidents registered in Romania are implemented, according to the criteria of Mehedinti County, student quality, road category (national, county, communal), the location of the school unit in the vicinity of the public road and the production of the traffic incident. One of the factors that decisively influences the quality of road traffic, therefore, implicitly the risk in traffic, is the public road network. The specialized studies, as well as the available international statistics, show that the main categories exposed to the risk of road accidents resulting in deaths and serious injuries are: pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and mopeds, in other words, the category known in specialized practice as "the most vulnerable traffic participants". In the last three decades, an increase in thyroid cancer incidence has been observed worldwide, as well as in Lithuania. Although the rise was linked to overdiagnosis, the role of lifestyle and environmental factors, including exposure to ionizing radiation, cannot be excluded. In our retrospective study, we aimed to assess the association between the average age-specific thyroid dose due to the radioactive iodine uptake during childhood and adolescence from the Chernobyl fallout in Lithuania, and the trends of incidence of thyroid cancer from 1991 to 2015 in different regions. Averaged age-dependent thyroid doses were estimated for every municipality based on radioiodine activity in milk, reconstructed from available 131I activity measurements in the grass. Thyroid cancer incidence rates were calculated for the entire population and for two age at the time of exposure groups: 0–19 years and 0–9 years. Thyroid cancer relative risk (RR) was estimated for three municipality-specific thyroid dose (for 0-year-old babies) categories: less than 100 mGy (reference group), 100–199 mGy, and ≥200 mGy. Over the study period (1991–2015), a total of 5664 cases of thyroid cancer were registered in the entire Lithuanian population; 817 cases in the age group from 0 to 19 years at the time of the Chernobyl accident, and 266 cases in the age group from 0 to 9 years. Age-standardized thyroid cancer incidence rates have notably increased since 2000, peaked in 2009 (especially in females), and then slightly decreased and stabilized. The estimated average municipality-specific age-dependent thyroid doses ranged from 270 mGy in western Lithuania to 1.5 mGy in central and northern Lithuania. For the age group of 0–19 years at the time of the accident, in the period 1991–1995, the thyroid cancer relative risk was significantly increased (RR 3.91; 95 % CI: 1.27–10.29, p=0.01) in the highest dose category, compared to the lowest (although based on a small number of cases). For the age group 0–9 years at the time of the accident, a tendency of increased RR in the highest dose category appeared in the most recent period, 2011–2015. Our observations need to be confirmed by further following trends of thyroid cancer incidence in the cohort of 0–19-year-old Lithuanians at the time of the Chernobyl accident. • The Chernobyl disaster had a long-term health impact on those exposed to radiation early in life. • The effects of this accident were far-reaching and continue to be studied to this day. • Reconstructed dose of 131I to the thyroid showed a wide range variation among Lithuania's regions. • In areas with doses over 200 mGy in early life, thyroid cancer rates increased for both sexes. Contact burns in children are not uncommon and are often due to accidental contact. Medico-legal assessment is of paramount importance in these contexts to identify cases of abuse. In three cases of burns caused by contact with radiators or a portable heater -two accidental and one deliberate- thorough medico-legal assessment, combined with on-site event reconstruction, enabled accurate diagnoses. Accidental burns displayed a ‘pattern’ compatible with the incandescent instrument but were more irregular, with different depths and in different parts of the body. In contrast, intentional burns were uniform in depth, distribution and localisation, inconsistent with accidental events. In this context, the on-site inspection and direct evaluation of the objects involved were crucial in the medico-legal assessment. Estimating internal contamination from 131I for children in nuclear accidents is a crucial subject in the radiation protection field. Throughout this paper, an urgent and simple method was proposed for measuring 131I inside the pediatric thyroid gland by constructing a neck and thyroid phantom. For this purpose, CT scan images of healthy child's thyroids were obtained, and the sizes of different parts were determined by a 3D slicer image processing software. Girls with the body surface area between 0.95 and 1.05 were involved in this study. The fabricated phantom is composed of 5 cylindrical slabs of 2-cm thickness, and several small holes were constructed for TLD dosemeters near the thyroid gland and all other parts of the neck. The phantom was constructed utilizing a 3D printer with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic. The thyroid phantom was filled with radioiodine-131, and calibration curves were plotted for contamination estimation. A nodular thyroid phantom was also constructed. The nodular phantom or the resolution phantom has 4 removable parts containing cylindrical holes with diameters of 3, 6, 9 and 12 mm. These holes on the thyroid glands can be filled with different activities of radionuclides to serve as hot and cold spots for quality control of nuclear medicine images. The results show that the designed phantom is applicable in different fields such as nuclear image quality and resolution tests, dosimetry and iodine thyroid uptake estimation in nuclear medicine departments, and nuclear emergency monitoring. Korea, which has the highest pedestrian fatality rate among OECD countries, is making efforts to improve the safe walking environment by enacting laws focusing on pedestrian. Naedang-dong and Yongsan-dong of Daegu Metropolitan City were identified as vulnerable areas for pedestrian safety due to the high risk of pedestrian accidents for children and the elderly. Background: Children who survive traffic accidents, and their parents, may develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or related symptoms (depression or anxiety), which can hinder the children's development and the parents' ability to provide effective care. In Japan, the PTSD incidence rate after traffic accidents and its related factors remain unclarified. Methods: The participants were 79 children and 104 parents. The children were aged 3-18 years when injured. From August through December 2015, participants completed a self-reported questionnaire survey that comprised the 15-item Post-traumatic Stress Symptoms for Children and the Japanese version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. The children's Injury Severity Score (ISS) was also obtained from their medical records. Correlation analysis, analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Results: Among the children and parents, 10.1% and 22.1%, respectively, were deemed to be at high risk of PTSD. Their stress scores were significantly positively correlated with each other and negatively correlated with the children's age at the time of the accident. Parents who witnessed their children's accidents and those whose children were hospitalized were more stressed. Neither the children's nor the parents' risk for PTSD was associated with ISS or the amount of time since the accident. Conclusions: A system that simultaneously works with children and parents to support both parties' psychological recovery is required. To ensure psychological care post-injury, it is necessary to evaluate PTSD risk, regardless of injury severity. Road accidents among children are one of the factors that cause mortality. An interactive manual has been developed to solve the problem. However, reports show that most road safety programs are displayed conventionally and unsuitable for almost all target users. In order to minimise the negative effect of road accidents on primary school students, early prevention programs need to be set up to overcome the problem. The natural user interface is a current technology that could be implemented in road safety education. Thus, this research aims to develop a conceptual framework by integrating gesture-based interaction and serious games towards road safety education, which will hopefully meet the road safety syllabus to tackle primary school students. All the proposed conceptual framework elements are identified through a systematic literature review and existing theories and model analysis supported by the experts' review. This research's main finding will be a conceptual framework of user engagement in road safety education through serious games with a gesture-based interaction technology approach. This conceptual framework would be a reference for road safety designers or developers to build an application for road safety by considering user engagement through gesture-based interaction, learning theory, and serious games at the same time. Objective: Childhood injury is a significant public health problem. This study aimed to evaluate the awareness of families about accident/injury risks both indoors and outdoors and provide counselling within the scope of parent education by using tools related to environmental safety. Material and Methods: This study was a two-centered, prospective study conducted with the participation of parents with children under the age of five. Initially, a preliminary assessment was made using a questionnaire. Then, face-to-face training was provided using an infographic brochure from the "Basic Information for Families for Child Health and Safety in the First 5 Years" booklet created by the Child Health Association (https://cocuksagligidernegi.org/). Parents were given a "Safety Checklist" so they could assess child safety at home. In the third and sixth months, families were called and asked questions again about their attitudes and behaviors towards preventing accidents/injuries. Results: A total of 157 parents were included in the study. It was determined that the rates of safe behavior in-car safety, sleep safety, toy safety, kitchen and bathroom safety, and indoor arrangements increased statistically. Conclusion: Family counseling and education can lead to behavioral change to create a safe environment for children and prevent accidents/injuries. Multifaceted initiatives are more likely to successfully reduce injuries at home and increase the effectiveness of education with the use of infographic materials, continuity of education, preparing checklists to be applied at home and sharing them with families. Road accidents in Israel were responsible for 23% of injuries in pediatric population between 2013 and 2017. In recent years, the massive entrance of e-bike and other light electric vehicles (called collectively LEV) into the roads is significantly changing the epidemiology of road accidents among children. The study aims to describe the causes, injury types, and other epidemiological characteristics of children injured in road accident and compare injuries of LEV to regular bicycles and other light non-electric vehicles (called collectively LNEV). This retrospective study included all referrals to pediatric emergency department due to road accidents, from April 2015 through March 2017. The details of the accidents and injuries were retrieved, and the subjects' characteristics were compared based on vehicle type. A total of 1531 children met the inclusion criteria. The study found that LEV road accidents among children cause more severe injuries than other LNEV in terms of injury severity score (ISS) (mean ISS 5.8 ± 4.9 vs. 4.7 ± 3.6, P = 0.001), head and neck injuries (18.7% vs. 12.9%, respectively, P < 0.05), lower extremities (36.5% vs. 23.9%, P = 0.001), and multisystem injuries (58.6% vs. 31.8%, P < 0.001). The findings of the current study suggest that the use of LEVs is changing the epidemiology of road accidents, which requires adjustments in accident and injury prevention strategies. Conclusion: The study results should encourage authorities to provide appropriate community-based programs to promote helmet use, introduce mandatory training and licensing program for LEV riders, and enhance enforcement. Background: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) accidents have a substantial impact on the pediatric population in Saudi Arabia; however, few local studies are available. An in-depth study of this issue and adequate implementation of regulations are required to prevent additional casualties. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of ATV injuries in the pediatric population and the outcomes associated with the injuries. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review at a Level 1 trauma center in Riyadh. All patients, aged ≤14 years and admitted due to an ATV accident, from 2004 to 2018 were included in this study. Demographic information, hospital course, and injury outcomes were extracted from the King Abdulaziz Medical City trauma registry. Each medical record was reviewed for short-term complications and the mechanism of injury. The primary outcome measure was the type of injury associated with ATV accidents; the secondary outcomes were injury site and mechanism of injury, and the association between the impact of injury and the clinical and demographic variable. Results: In total, 165 patients were involved in ATV accidents and met our inclusion criteria. The mean age was 8 ± 4 years, and 79% (131/165) were boys. Over 50% (84/165) of the sample had lower limb injuries. The majority of patients had fracture injuries (37%, 61/165), followed by amputations (30%, 50/165). Of the amputation group, the majority (86%, 43/50) was from 1 to 5 years compared to the no amputation group (P < 0.001). For the amputation group, 67% (33/50) had a limb trapped in the chain of the vehicle as to the mechanism of injury. Conclusion: The majority of patients had lower-extremity injuries, specifically fractured (37%) or amputated (30%) with children from age 1–5 years having a significantly higher proportion of hospital admission compared to the rest of the study population. Despite the existing legislation for ATV use in children, they are not enforced. The finding of this study recommends urgent implementation of these regulations for both ATV retailers and users and promotes public awareness about the severity of such injuries. Background: Poisoning comprises about 7% of accidents in children under 5-year-old and 2% of all pediatric deaths in developing countries. To warn against and prevent future potential poisoning with opioid substances, this comparative study was conducted on pediatric cases referred to the 17th Shahrivar Hospital in Rasht, Iran, in 2006 and 2018. Methods: In this retrospective, cross-sectional study, all hospitalized pediatric cases diagnosed with opioid poisoning in 2006 and 2018 were investigated systematically. The demographic data, such as age, gender, city or village of residence, the poisoning substances involved, and the clinical outcomes were extracted from the medical records and entered on an appropriatelydesigned form. The data analysis was performed, using SPSS software, version 21. Results: Fifty pediatric cases were examined with a mean age of 44.38±3.8 months old. Among these cases, 14 children had been poisoned, 13 of whom with opium and one with morphine in 2006; while in 2018, 36 children had been poisoned with methadone and only one with opium. Conclusion: Comparing years 2006 with 2018, a considerable increase in pediatric opioid poisoning cases was observed with a tendency toward methadone being the substance involved. The occurrences might be due to unsafe access of unaware children to this drug, especially after the initiation of methadone maintenance treatment for opiate addicts, who were mainly the parents or relatives living in the same household. Children's injuries at home are increasingly being recognized as a public health issue that may be avoided with improved awareness, safe practices, and improvements to the home environment. Preschool children are particularly vulnerable to home accidents, and providing information to mothers about how to protect their children in the event of an accident has a significant influence on reducing the number of injuries among children. The goal of this study was to assess the mother perception toward home accidents among children and determine the mothers' baseline knowledge, attitudes, and practices about home accidents in their children and to find out the relationship between the mother perception toward home accidents among children and demographic data. 368 women who attended outpatient pediatric clinics at the Maternity and Children Hospital in Karbala Region were studied in a crosssectional study. Mothers' sociodemographic factors, knowledge, attitude, and practices about home accidents were all included in a self-administered questionnaire. All of the results were given a good, fair, or poor rating. Mothers were given health education messages. The study's findings revealed that over twothirds of participants (63.28 percent) rely on social media for information regarding home accidents. More than a third (35.9%) had insufficient knowledge, roughly 38% had a positive attitude, and less than a third (29%) had suitable practices in the event of a house mishap. There was no significant correlation between mothers' KAP scores and their ages. However, Working mothers and those with a university education had much higher knowledge and attitude scores. Mothers who had had first-aid training and had a history of child injury at home were considerably more educated and practiced proper first-aid procedures. Participants from families with a greater income had more proper practices. Protecting children from domestic violence requires a multifaceted approach. In addition to combined government and community efforts, an intervention is required to bridge the knowledge gap and enhance mothers' attitudes and practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Purpose: There are several injury scoring systems, anatomic, physiologic and combined scores, which have been used for prediction of patients' outcome such as mortality. Among physiologic scoring systems evolved shock index (heart rate divided by systolic blood pressure) which has been first described in 1967. In the world of paediatric and due to the physiological differences between different age groups, few adjustments have to be done considering these changes evolving shock index paediatric adjusted (SIPA). This study was conducted to evaluate SIPA as a quick feasible method for triaging and managing pediatric trauma and also to predict ICU admission and need for CT scan as a primary outcome and also secondary outcomes like length of hospital stay and (need for surgical intervention) and mortality rate. Study Design: Prospective randomized controlled study. Setting: The children's accident and emergency department in Armed Forces Hospitals and Ain Shams University hospitals. Subjects: We included 124 pediatric trauma children, and they were divided into 2 groups: Group A (62 children): assessed by SIPA in an incidence of trauma, and Group B (62 children): assessed by traditional vital signs (blood pressure, pulse and capillary refill). Methods: All patients were subjected to full history taking, SIPA assessment on admission and its daily changes (baseline up to 48 hours). Assessment for need for ICU admission, ventilation, CT scan, surgical intervention, and Length of hospital stay, along with mortality rate recording. Results: In the studied population, the mean age of all patients was (6.8 ± 3.2) years, with (65.3%) of patient males; and (34.7%) females. Regarding outcome data, comparative study between the 2 groups revealed; significant decrease in ICU admission, need for CT scan, LOS and mortality rate in Group A (SIPA) (p < 0.05). As regards SIPA trend, we found non-significant difference between mortality and no-mortality subgroups in SBP, heart rate, Capillary refill time and SIPA during the serial (baseline up to 48-h) measurements. Also, regarding ICU LOS, we found non-significant difference between mortality and no-mortality subgroups in SBP, heart rate, Capillary refill time and SIPA during the serial (baseline up to 48-h) measurements. Conclusion: To conclude, SIPA score proven to be an accurate and specific predictor of morbidity, hospital stay and ICU admission, and mortality rate in pediatric trauma patients and is superior to capillary refill time, tachycardia or hypotension alone for predicting different outcomes. • ADHD patients are at increased risk of accidents and injuries, however risk changes over the life span. • Types of accidents and injuries in ADHD differ over the life span. • ADHD medication seems to decrease the risk of accidents and injuries in all ages. • ADHD with mental disorder comorbidities appears to show further augmented accident and injury risk. Studies have demonstrated an increased risk of accidents and injuries in children, adolescents and adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, little is known about how accident risk may alter over the lifespan. Additionally, it would be important to know if the most common types of accidents and injuries differ in ADHD patients over different age groups. Furthermore, there is increasing evidence of an ameliorating effect of ADHD medication on accident risk. Lastly, the underlying risk factors and causal mechanisms behind increased accident risk remain unclear. We therefore conducted a systematic review focusing on the above described research questions. Our results suggested that accident/injury type and overall risk changes in ADHD patients over the lifespan. ADHD medication appeared to be similarly effective at reducing accident risk in all age groups. However, studies with direct comparisons of accident/injuries and effects of medication at different age groups or in old age are still missing. Purpose: To assess the prevalence and related factors of traumatic dental injuries (TDI) among 12-year-old Jordanian schoolchildren. Materials and Methods: For this cross-sectional study among schoolchildren, a sample of 2560 schoolchildren (1209 boys, 1351 girls) aged 12 years were randomly selected. The epidemiological classification adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and modified by Andreasen et al was used to record TDI on incisors. Results: Of the children examined, 5.5% showed TDI. The difference in prevalence between boys and girls was statistically significant (P < 0.01). Maxillary central incisors were the most affected and the most common type of crown injury was enamel/dentin fracture. The relationship between dental injuries and geographic location, area, and socioeconomic indicators was not statistically significant. Most of the TDI occurred at home, followed by school; the most frequent cause was falls. No statistically significant association was found between TDI and dental caries experience (P > 0.05). There was a tendency for boys (P < 0.01), children with an incisal overjet > 3 mm (P < 0.01) and incompetent lip closure (P < 0.001) to have experienced dental injuries. Treatment need due to dental injuries was very high. Conclusion: The prevalence of traumatic injuries to permanent incisors in 12-year-old Jordanian schoolchildren was relatively low. TDI was associated with gender, overjet and lip competence, but was not influenced by dental caries experience. There was a great unmet treatment need. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Child accidents are among the world's leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Thanks to the increasing rise in female involvement in the labor force, the need for out of home care for children has risen considerably. All children have the right to a healthy environment and caregivers must also be trained and capable of caring for children in day care centres. This study aims to identify caregivers' knowledge that affects safety and injury prevention awareness among parents. A cross sectional questionnaire study design was carried out among 115 participants predominantly south indian population. Simple random sampling method was used to gather information using validated self constructed, self administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS using descriptive statistics and chi square tests. In Marivaux's La vie de Marianne (1731–1742), the classical concept of destiny is deployed to convey the singularity of the protagonist's existence and as a tool that allows for a critical articulation of the determinants of female existence. Common to both explorations is the underlying importance of accidents and other events of non‐choosing that engage with feminine agency as modalities of affordances. I argue that La vie de Marianne reveals another dimension of agentless destiny, pertaining this time to the primacy of an emerging economic logic, wherein, as Florence Magnot‐Ogilvy has recently shown, persons run the potential risk of becoming replaceable. Building on Magnot‐Ogilvy's and René Démoris's analyses of repetition and the doubling of female characters in La vie de Marianne, I show that social and economic fatum is combatted by Marianne, who distinguishes herself from other women, such as Mademoiselle Varthon and Tervire, by presenting herself not only as a singular voice whose power is enacted through storytelling, but as someone who has a greater destin, possessing worth and narrative interest. Marianne records her romanesque story in order to open a doorway into the contingencies of women's lives, while also taking ownership of herself as a product of literary self‐fashioning. One of the most frequent causes of accidents in children are burns, regardless of aetiology, without displaying a noteworthy gender disparity, and they represent one of the most complex diseases with which a body can be afflicted. The differences amongst patients who arrived at the emergency room, as well as those who were hospitalised on the Plastic Surgery and Burns department within the Clinical Emergency Hospital ”Gr. Alexandrescu”, regarding their age, gender, percentage of the afflicted body surface area, the location of the burn lesions on their bodies, have been monitored and analysed, in order to create an equation which defines the profile of the patient hospitalised within the plastic surgery departments. Studies on the long-term prevalence of parental posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) following child accidental injury are scarce, and findings on risk factors vary. In this follow-up study (T2, n = 69) we determined the prevalence of parental PTSS 2-4 years after accidental injury of their child, compared with 3 months after the accident (T1, n = 135). Additionally, we examined the association between parental and child factors and PTSS severity. Children were 8-18 years old at the time of the accident. Parent and child PTSS was assessed by self-report. Other data were retrieved from medical records and a telephone interview. Parental PTSS was 9.6% at T1 and 5.8% at T2. Acute parental stress as measured within 2 weeks of the child's accident was significantly associated with parental PTSS severity (T1 and T2), as was the child's hospitalization of more than 1 day at T1 and the child's permanent physical impairment at T2. To prevent adverse long-term psychological consequences we recommend identifying and monitoring parents at risk and offering them timely treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Accidents caused by children's play equipment are a severe health threat to them. Implementing the requirements of the safety standards is necessary to ensure the safety of such equipment. The current study aimed to determine the general safety of playground equipment in general parks in Gonabad City, Iran. We also compared the level of the general safety of this equipment with national standards. Methods: This cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted in all the parks of Gonabad City during the autumn and winter of 2017. The required information on the playgrounds in the public parks of this city was collected by a checklist. The checklist was designed based on the general safety of playgrounds standards (national standard 1-6436) in 124 items. Results: On average, 9.55 of standard requirements were not implemented in examined parks. Moreover, none of the studied parks fully complied with current standards. We observed fractures, cracks, or deformation in equipment, rough surfaces with the risk of injury, hazardous conditions due to inappropriate design that could harm children, as well as the lack of middle aggressors. These were non-compliant components observed at least 70% of the studied parks. Conclusion: Removing points with fracture and defective points, and improving the level of children's playground is essential. The obtained data also emphasized the need for periodic safety audits and the improvement of the safety level of children's playground equipment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined the level of caregiver supervision when children were engaged in active play at public pools. A six-hour unobtrusive observation period was conducted at six different indoor aquatic venues with caregivers accompanying children aged < 10 years eligible to be monitored. Child behavior, corresponding caregiver supervision, and the willingness of parents to intervene when children exhibited unsafe behaviors all were considered. Environmental factors and pool conditions were also recorded. Chi-square tests illustrated that increased supervision was associated with decreased incidents and lower risk behaviors. Supervision was significantly affected by child and caregiver age, number of children for whom caregivers were responsible, and child swimming ability. The nature of caregiver supervision in aquatic settings requires further investigation to enable the development of effective programs to address poor supervision practices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
