The uptake of 241Am, 244Cm and 249Cf with LN resin was studied in HCl and HNO3 solutions with concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 2.5 M. There is high uptake at concentrations < 0.1 M in both acids for all three isotopes with decreasing uptake at higher concentrations and negligible extraction at ≥ 0.6 M. Californium has a higher extraction than americium and curium, which are extremely similar. Kinetics studies showed rapid uptake of all three isotopes. The chemistry of trivalent transplutonium ions (Am3+ , Cm3+ , Bk3+ , Cf3+ , Es3+ …) is usually perceived as monotonic and paralleling that of the trivalent lanthanide series. Herein, we present the first extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) study performed on a series of aqueous heavy actinide chelates, extending past Cm. The results obtained on diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) complexes of trivalent Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf show a break to much shorter metal-oxygen nearest-neighbor bond lengths in the case of Cf3+ . Corroborating those results, density functional theory calculations, extended to Es3+ , suggest that the shorter Cf-O and Es-O bonds could arise from the departure of the coordinated water molecule and contraction of the ligand around the metal relative to the other [MIII DTPA(H2 O)]2- (M=Am, Cm, Bk) complexes. Taken together, these experimental and theoretical results demonstrate inhomogeneity within the trivalent transplutonium series that has been insinuated and debated in recent years, and that may also be leveraged for future nuclear waste reprocessing technologies.

Modern life associated with processed food, exposure to a wide range of pollutants, physical inactivity, unprecedented time, excessive involvement of technology in our lives, and so on give rise to oxidative stress which threatens our physical and mental health. Because of rising healthcare costs and mistrust of conventional medicine, mankind is looking for alternatives to over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs, which is driving the demand for nutraceuticals across the globe. Antioxidant-rich plant-based natural products could be an important source of nutraceuticals to boost endogenous antioxidant levels. In this research, we uncovered the antioxidant potential of Eriodictyon californicum, an herb used by Native Americans for centuries to treat a wide range of ailments. The ethanolic leaf extract of E. californicum was studied for its phytochemical constituents, antioxidant potential, and free radical scavenging activity. Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, phenols, tannins, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, and steroids. The abundance of total phenol (78.58 ± 0.016 μg GAE/mg) and flavonoid content (6.76 ± 0.003 μg QE/mg) and the strong reducing activity in the FRAP assay indicated the antioxidant potential of the leaves. Free radical scavenging activity was confirmed by a dose-dependent response on the DPPH assay (IC50 0.071 mg/mL). Since reactive oxygen species are the main culprits for causing oxidative stress in our body, studying the effect of plant extracts on superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals found that it has the ability to neutralize all three. IC50 was found to be 0.083 mg/mL for superoxide radicals, 0.033 mg/mL for hydrogen peroxide, and 0.080 mg/mL for hydroxyl radicals. Herein, we report that E. californicum is a potential source of bioactive components with strong radical scavenging activity. The separation of minor actinides in their dioxocation (i.e., actinyl) form in high-valence oxidation states requires efficient ligands for their complexation. In this work, we evaluate the complexation properties of actinyls including americyl, curyl, berkelyl, and californyl in their pentavalent and hexavalent oxidation states with the dipyriamethyrin ligand (L) using density functional theory calculations. The calculated bond parameters show shorter An＝Oyl bonds with covalent character and longer An–N bonds with ionic character. The bonding between the actinyl cation and the ligand anion shows a flow of charges from the ligand to actinyl in all [AnV/VIO2–L]1−/0 complexes. However, across the series, backdonation of charges from the metal to the ligand becomes prominent and stabilizes the complexes. The thermodynamic parameters in the gas phase and solution suggest that the complex formation reaction is spontaneous for [CfV/VIO2–L]1−/0 complexes and spontaneous at elevated temperatures (>298.15 K) for all other complexes. Spin–orbit corrections have a quantitative impact while the overall trend remains the same. Energy decomposition analysis (EDA) reveals that the interaction between actinyl and the ligand is mainly due to electrostatic contributions that decrease from Am to Cf along with an increase in orbital contributions due to the backdonation of charges from the actinyl metal center to the ligand that greatly stabilizes the Cf complex. The repulsive Pauli energy contribution is observed to increase in the case of [AnVO2–L]1− complexes from Am to Cf while a decrease is observed among [AnVIO2–L]0 complexes, showing minimum repulsion in [CfVIO2–L]0 complex formation. The atomic structure of californium is probed by two-step resonance ionization spectroscopy. Using samples with a total amount of about 2 × 10 10 Cf atoms (ca. 8.3 pg), ground-state transitions as well as transitions to high-lying Rydberg states and auto-ionizing states above the ionization potential are investigated and the lifetimes of various atomic levels are measured. These investigations lead to the identification of efficient ionization schemes, important for trace analysis and nuclear structure investigations. Most of the measurements are conducted on 250 Cf. In addition, the isotope shift of the isotopic chain 249 − 252 Cf is measured for one transition. The identification and analysis of Rydberg series enables the determination of the first ionization potential of californium to E IP = 50 , 666.76 (5) cm − 1 . This study explores the ability of non-destructive assay techniques to detect a partial material defect in which 100 g of plutonium are diverted from the center of a 1000 g can of PuO2 powder. Four safeguards measurements techniques: neutron multiplicity counting, calorimetry, gravimetry, and gamma ray spectroscopy are used in an attempt to detect the defect. Several materials are added to the partial defect PuO2 can to replicate signatures of the diverted material. 252Cf is used to compensate for the doubles neutron counts, 241Am is used to compensate for the decay heat, and aluminum is used to compensate for the weight. Although, the doubles and triples difference before and after diversion are statistically indistinguishable with the AWCC in fast and thermal mode, the difference in the singles counts are statistically detectable in both modes. The relatively short half-life of 252Cf leads to a decrease (three sigma uncertainty) in the doubles neutron counts after 161 days. Combining this with the precise quantity of 241Am needed (10.7 g) to mimic the heat signature and the extreme precision in 252Cf mass needed to defeat neutron multiplicity measurements gives reassurance in the International Atomic Energy Agency's ability to detect partial material defects.

The mean total kinetic energy as a function of fission fragments, (A), is calculated for neutron-induced fission of 247,249,251,253,255Cf, as well as for spontaneous fission of 248,250,252,254Cf using the scission point model. A comparative analysis is performed between the calculated results and existing experimental data. Investigation into the behavior of (A) is conducted, particularly focusing on intermediate and heavy actinides. While nuclear and Coulomb energy evaluations suffice for estimating values in light actinides, this approximation proves inadequate for evaluating TKE values for intermediate and heavy actinides. Additionally, an evaluation is made of the total excitation energy as a function of fission fragments, (A), concerning spontaneous fission in 247−254Cf. It is found that TXE values sharply increase near the symmetric region across all isotopes and exhibit a gradual increase in heavy fission fragments. Furthermore, an exploration of the total neutron multiplicity as a function of fission fragments, ν T (A) , is conducted for 252Cf fission using two methods. The ν T (A) results obtained through these methods are compared with experimental data, and ν T (A) is estimated for unmeasured californium isotopes. The average neutron emission per fission event, ν ¯ (A i) , is then calculated for spontaneous fission of 251Cf and 253Cf, yielding values of 3.46 and 3.59, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) is a communication protocol at application layer in the Internet of things (IoT). It employs NSTART parameter to maintain outstanding parallel connections toward individual destinations for data transfer. In the existing implementation of CoAP, the value for NSTART is defined statically. Where the higher values of this parameter up to a threshold give better throughput in moderate traffic, the lower values for the same control the congestion in overload situations. In overload situations, higher values of NSTART result in increased overhead and thereby perform poorly in terms of throughput. The static nature of the parameter and its relevant performance issues demand to manage NSTART dynamically in CoAP. In this work, we propose an algorithm to adjust the value of NSTART dynamically based on the congestion in the network. The proposed approach is an attempt to make the client free from managing NSTART dynamically. For the proof of concept, we implement and run simulations on Cooja mote at IoT/FIT-Lab testbed and Californium CoAP client. The results show 15% improvement in throughput, 15% reduction in average exchange duration, and 48% reduction in average number of retries (average taken of three scenarios) by proposed approach in comparison with the best case of CoCoA (NSTART = 4). The chromatographic resins DGA and LN have been used sequentially to separate curium, californium, plutonium, and various fission products (FPs) to obtain products with a pure radioisotope or a radioelement with high isotopic purity. This 2-step combination of resins has found applications in the 252Cf and 238Pu campaigns performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Experiments have been carried out in glove boxes, shielded caves, and hot cells, demonstrating that these resins are adequate and maintain their performance in highly radiolytic environments. Using these resins has led to the recovery of curium highly enriched (>95%) in 248Cm, the clean separation of 251Cf for the superheavy element research, and the recovery of 147Pm from the FP stream obtained during the 238Pu production campaign while demonstrating that the raffinate post DGA is essentially free of transuranic elements. Due to their rarity and radioactive nature, comparatively little is known about the actinides, particularly those with atomic numbers higher than that of plutonium, and their compounds. In this work, we describe how transmission electron microscopy can provide comprehensive, safe, and cost-effective characterization using only single nanogram amounts of highly-radioactive, solid compounds. Chlorides of the rare elements berkelium and californium are dropcast and then converted in situ to oxides using the electron beam. The f-band occupancies are probed using electron energy loss spectroscopy and an unexpectedly weak spin-orbit-coupling is identified for berkelium. In contrast, californium follows a jj coupling scheme. These results have important implications for the chemistries of these elements and solidify the status of californium as a transitional element in the actinide series. The obtention and study of actinide elements is challenging due to various factors including their radioactivity and scarcity. Herein, the authors characterize the atomic and electronic structure of Am, Cm, Bk, and Cf compounds using a transmission electron microscopy-based workflow that only requires nanogram amounts of the actinide element. This paper describes the methodology developed for the numerical reconstruction and modelling of the thorium-lead (Th-Pb) assembly available at the Department of Nuclear Energy, Faculty of Energy and Fuels, AGH University, Krakow, Poland. This numerical study is the first step towards integral irradiation experiments in the Th-Pb environment. The continuous-energy Monte Carlo burnup (MCB) code available on supercomputer Prometheus of ACK Cyfronet AGH was applied for numerical modelling. The assembly consists of a hexagonal array of ThO2 fuel rods and metallic Pb rods. The design allows for different arrangements of the rods for various types of irradiations and experimental measurements. The intensity of the fresh neutron source intended for integral experiments is about 108 n/s, which corresponds to the mass of about 43 μg 252Cf. The source was modelled in the form of Cf2O3-Pd cermet wire embedded in two stainless steel capsules.

In 1957 Glenn T. Seaborg conceived and advocated for the construction of the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Transuranium Processing Plant (since then renamed the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, or REDC) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Heavily shielded hot cells, glove boxes, and laboratories allow recovery of transuranium elements produced in substantial quantities. Seaborg's vision of HFIR and REDC producing milligram quantities of berkelium, californium, and einsteinium has been fulfilled beginning in 1966 through May 2019 with 78 production campaigns yielding a cumulative totals of 1.2 g of 249Bk, 10.2 g of 252Cf, 39 mg of 253Es, and 15 pg of 257Fm. Notably, 252Cf is a neutron source used in many industrial applications including oil exploration; process control systems for the cement industry, coal analysis, and power production; sources to start nuclear reactors and perform nondestructive materials analyses; homeland security and national defense detection devices; and medical research. Isotopes made available through transplutonium production at HFIR/REDC have enabled scientists to study the nuclear properties and reactions, chemical properties, optical properties, and solid-state properties of transplutonium elements. Long-lived isotopes have served as targets in heavy ion accelerators to produce heavier elements leading to the discovery of 104Rf, 105Db, 106Sg, 113Nh, 114Fl, 115Mc, 116Lv, 117Ts, and 118Og. This paper reviews the evolution of the processing flowsheets to produce, separate, and purify transplutonium isotopes, which have evolved over 50 years of operation at HFIR and REDC, and summarizes directions of future work to improve the efficiency of the production operations. Well‐characterized complexes of transplutonium elements are scarce because of the experimental challenges of working with these elements and the rarity of the isotopes. This leads to a lack of structural and spectroscopic data needed to understand the nature of chemical bonds in these compounds. In this work, the synthesis of Cf(DOPOq)2(NO3)(py) (DOPOq=2,4,6,8‐tetra‐tert‐butyl‐1‐oxo‐1H‐phenoxazin‐9‐olate; py=pyridine) is reported, in which the nitrate anion is hypothesized to form through the α‐radiolysis‐induced reaction of pyridine and/or the ligand. This article describes a series of experimental measurements and calculations designed to quantify the scattering and albedo effects on neutron spectra and their consequences on single-event effect (SEE) sensitivities. An experimental approach was proposed to investigate the scattering and albedo neutron spectra using a 252Cf facility and for several scene topologies. A highly sensitive neutron spectrometer based on a Bonner sphere system (BSS) is used, allowing to measure neutron energy from thermal to tens of megaelectron-volts. To complete previous SEE measurements on 45 nm, the soft error rate (SER) was recorded on 28-nm technology. A second part considers complex topologies including concrete walls and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) blocks to represent a design facility and the shielding to protect some parts of the SEE test board, respectively. The results showed that devices are more impacted by the presence of materials, especially HDPE. Indeed, almost 25% of the events are due to the secondary neutrons. Orders of magnitude are not critical, nevertheless, they warn about taking into account the albedo contributions and how to add materials in the vicinity of measurement devices. The merging of small‐scale syntheses and rapid crystallization methods have provided access to crystalline samples of berkelium (Z=97) and californium (Z=98) coordination complexes and compounds that can be interrogated with a suite of spectroscopic tools and structural elucidation approaches that have come online over the last 20 years. The combination of this experimental data with relativistic theoretical methods that capture the effects of spin‐orbit coupling and scalar relativistic effects have allowed us to understand the electronic structure of berkelium and californium compounds at a level of detail that was not previously possible. The harbinger of this new era of post‐curium chemistry was the synthesis and characterization of [Cf{B6O8(OH)5}]. This compound possesses a structure type that is distinct from earlier actinide borates, a reduction in coordination number for californium, contracted Cf−O bond lengths, a substantially reduced magnetic moment with respect to the calculated free‐ion moment and, most importantly, vibronically coupled broadband photoluminescence. Ligand‐field analysis also showed that the splitting of the ground state was larger than typically found in the f‐block elements, and when taken together places its overall electronic structure as a hybrid of d‐ and f‐block components. The discovery of the unusual properties of this compound has led to the development of large families of 4f and 5f coordination complexes, in an effort to uncover the underlying origin of the electronic structure oddities, and whether there really is a sharp onset of these changes at californium. This in turn pushed the development of far more challenging berkelium chemistry (from a radiologic standpoint) because the half‐life of the isotopes decreases from 351 years for 249Cf to 330 days for 249Bk. High-resolution gamma spectrometry was used to study characteristics of californium neutron sources—age, isotopic composition and impurity radionuclides, as well as the effect of the isotopic composition on uncertainties involved in age determination. These characteristics are relevant during criminal investigations related to californium sources found outside of regulatory control. Age determination relies on measuring the activity ratios of long-lived and short-lived fission products of 250Cf and 252Cf. It is based on a known method but also introduces new pairs of isotopes that can be used for this purpose. The isotopic composition was estimated from the direct measurement of the activities of 249Cf and 251Cf isotopes. The methods were tested using 5 californium reference sources at JRC-Karlsruhe. Additional raw data (gamma spectra) were provided by the German Radiation Protection Authority, and by the University of Novi Sad, Serbia. Abstract C f /SiC-ZrB 2 -Ta x C y composite was synthesized by reactive hot pressing (RHP) of C f cloth, polycarbosilane (PCS), ZrB 2 , and Ta powders at 4 MPa and 1200 °C. PIP cycle influenced sintering process by increasing density of the composite from 2.34 to 2.82 g/cc. Residual carbon produced during the PIP cycles at 1200 °C was utilized to yield Ta x C y by the addition of Ta. SEM images illustrate that by increasing the number of PIP cycles, SiC derived from the PCS cover the C f fibre, micropores, and cracks. PIP cycles and Ta x C y phase improved flexural strength of the composite from 20 to 114 MPa. Mass and linear ablation resistance studies at 1600–2000 °C exhibited that oxide formation at the outer surface caused a barrier; further, no oxidation underneath the composite was observed. SEM images display that at 2000 °C, SiO 2 and Ta x O y were molten and sealed the pores. Hence, ablation resistance was enhanced by blocking the penetration in high-temperature flame. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of 252Californium neutron intracavitary brachytherapy using a two-channel Y applicator combined with external beam radiotherapy for the treatment of endometrial cancer. METHODS: Thirty-one patients with stage I-III endometrial cancer were recruited for this study. The stage I patients received only 252Californium neutron intracavitary brachytherapy with a two-channel applicator. The stage II and III patients received both 252Californium neutron intracavitary brachytherapy using a two-channel applicator and parallel-opposed whole pelvic radiotherapy. RESULTS: The five-year local control rate was 80.6% (25/31), the overall survival rate was 51.6% (16/31), and the disease-free survival rate was 54.8% (17/31). The incidence of serious late complications was 12.9% (4/31). CONCLUSIONS: 252Californium neutron intracavitary brachytherapy using a two-channel applicator combined with external beam radiotherapy was effective for treating endometrial cancer and the incidence of serious late complications related to this combination was within an acceptable range.
