Search

Understanding the chemistry of the interstellar medium (ISM) is fundamental for the comprehension of the Galactic and stellar evolution. X-rays provide an excellent way to study the dust chemical composition and crystallinity along different sight-lines in the Galaxy. In this work we study the dust grain chemistry in the diffuse regions of the interstellar medium in the soft X-ray band (, A&A accepted, 13 pages, 5 figures

Frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) is the baseline readout system for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) on board the Athena mission. Under the FDM scheme, TESs are coupled to a passive LC filter and biased with alternating current (AC bias) at MHz frequencies. Using high-quality factor LC filters and room temperature electronics developed at SRON and low-noise two-stage SQUID amplifiers provided by VTT, we have recently demonstrated good performance with the FDM readout of Mo/Au TES calorimeters with Au/Bi absorbers. We have achieved a performance requested for the demonstration model (DM) with the single pixel AC bias ($\Delta E=$1.8 eV) and 9 pixel multiplexing ($\Delta E=$2.6 eV) modes. We have also demonstrated 14-pixel multiplexing with an average energy resolution of 3.3 eV, which is limited by non-fundamental issues related to FDM readout in our lab setup., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. We report on the development and demonstration of a MHz frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) technology to read out arrays of cryogenic transition edge sensor (TES) X-ray microcalorimeters. In our FDM scheme, TESs are AC-biased at different resonant frequencies in the low MHz range through an array of high-$Q$ LC resonators. The current signals of all TESs are summed at superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). We have demonstrated multiplexing for a readout of 31 pixels using room temperature electronics, high-$Q$ LC filters and TES arrays developed at SRON, and SQUID arrays from VTT. We repeated this on a second setup with 37 pixels. The summed X-ray spectral resolutions $@$ 5.9 keV are $\Delta E_{\rm 31 pix ~MUX}=2.14\pm0.03$ eV and $\Delta E_{\rm 37 pix ~MUX}=2.23\pm0.03$ eV. The demonstrated results are comparable with other multiplexing approaches. There is potential to further improve the spectral resolution and to increase the number of multiplexed TESs, and to open up applications for TES X-ray microcalorimeters., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication on Applied physics letters

The dense Galactic environment is a large reservoir of interstellar dust. Therefore, this region represents a perfect laboratory to study the properties of the cosmic dust grains. X-rays are the most direct way to detect the interaction of light with dust present in these dense environments. The interaction between the radiation and the interstellar matter imprints specific absorption features in the X-ray spectrum. We study them with the aim of defining the chemical composition, the crystallinity and structure of the dust grains which populate the inner regions of the Galaxy. We investigate the magnesium and the silicon K-edges detected in the Chandra/HETG spectra of eight bright X-ray binaries, distributed in the neighbourhood of the Galactic centre. We model the two spectral features using accurate extinction cross sections of silicates, that we have measured at the synchrotron facility Soleil, France. Near the Galactic centre magnesium and silicon show abundances similar to the solar ones and they are highly depleted from the gas phase ($\delta_{\rm{Mg}}>0.90$ and $\delta_{\rm{Si}}>0.96$). We find that amorphous olivine with a composition of $\rm MgFeSiO_{4}$ is the most representative compound along all lines of sight according to our fits. The contribution of Mg-rich silicates and quartz is low (less than $10\%$). On average we observe a percentage of crystalline dust equal to $11\%$. For the extragalactic source LMC X-1, we find a preference for forsterite, a magnesium-rich olivine. Along this line of sight we also observe an underabundance of silicon $A_{\rm Si}/A_{\rm LMC} = 0.5\pm0.2$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, recommended for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The impact of various crosstalk mechanisms on the performance of the Athena X-IFU instrument has been assessed with detailed end-to-end simulations. For the crosstalk in the electrical circuit, a detailed model has been developed. In this contribution, we test this model against measurements made with an FDM laboratory setup and discuss the assumption of deterministic crosstalk in the context of the weak link effect in the detectors. We conclude that crosstalk levels predicted by the model are conservative with respect to the observed levels.

Studying absorption and scattering of X-ray radiation by interstellar dust grains allows us to access the physical and chemical properties of cosmic grains even in the densest regions of the Galaxy. We aim at characterising the dust silicate population which presents clear absorption features in the energy band covered by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Through these absorption features, in principle, it is possible to infer the size distribution, composition, and structure of silicate in the interstellar medium. In particular, in this work, we investigate the magnesium and silicon K-edges. By using newly acquired synchrotron measurements, we build X-ray extinction models for fifteen dust candidates. These models, adapted for astrophysical analysis, and implemented in the Spex spectral fitting program, are used to reproduce the dust absorption features observed in the spectrum of the bright low mass X-ray binary GX 3+1 which is used as a background source. With the simultaneous analysis of the two edges we test two different size distributions of dust: one corresponding to the standard Mathis-Rumpl-Nordsieck model and one considering larger grains ($n(a) \propto a_i^{-3.5}$ with $0.005, Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publications in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The composition and properties of interstellar silicate dust are not well understood. In X-rays, interstellar dust can be studied in detail by making use of the fine structure features in the Si K-edge. The features in the Si K-edge offer a range of possibilities to study silicon-bearing dust, such as investigating the crystallinity, abundance, and the chemical composition along a given line of sight. We present newly acquired laboratory measurements of the silicon K-edge of several silicate-compounds that complement our measurements from our earlier pilot study. The resulting dust extinction profiles serve as templates for the interstellar extinction that we observe. The extinction profiles were used to model the interstellar dust in the dense environments of the Galaxy. The laboratory measurements, taken at the Soleil synchrotron facility in Paris, were adapted for astrophysical data analysis and implemented in the SPEX spectral fitting program. The models were used to fit the spectra of nine low-mass X-ray binaries located in the Galactic center neighborhood in order to determine the dust properties along those lines of sight. Most lines of sight can be fit well by amorphous olivine. We also established upper limits on the amount of crystalline material that the modeling allows. We obtained values of the total silicon abundance, silicon dust abundance, and depletion along each of the sightlines. We find a possible gradient of $0.06\pm0.02$ dex/kpc for the total silicon abundance versus the Galactocentric distance. We are developing the frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) read-out of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters for the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) instrument on board of the future European X-Ray observatory Athena. The X-IFU instrument consists of an array of $\sim$3840 TESs with a high quantum efficiency (>90 % at 7 keV) and spectral resolution $\Delta E$=2.5 eV @ 7 keV ($E/\DeltaE\sim$2800). FDM is the baseline readout system for the X-IFU instrument. In FDM, TESs are coupled to a passive LC filter and biased with alternating current (AC bias) at MHz frequencies. Each resonator should be separated beyond their detector thermal response (< 10 kHz) to avoid crosstalk between neighboring resonators. To satisfy the requirement of the X-IFU, a multiplexing factor of 40 pixels/channel in a frequency range from 1 to 5 MHz required. Using high-quality factor LC filters and room temperature electronics developed at SRON and low-noise two-stage SQUID amplifiers provided by VTT, we have recently demonstrated good performance with the FDM readout of Mo/Au TES calorimeters with Au/Bi absorbers. We have achieved a performance requested for the demonstration model (DM) with the single pixel AC bias mode. We have also demonstrated 6-pixel multiplexing with an average energy resolution of 3.4 eV, which is currently limited by non-fundamental issues related to FDM readout in our current lab setup. In parallel to technology developments, we are also constructing a set-up which can be readout 2x40 pixels as the precursor of the DM. In this paper we report on the concept of the focal plane assembly, their requirements, detector performance under FDM scheme, recent results from pre-demonstration model setup and future prospect.

The XIFU X-ray spectrometer instrument on the future Athena mission needs X-ray calibration sources to calibrate the gains of the individual detector pixels. For this purpose, electronically controlled Modulated X-ray Sources (MXS) are proposed, similar to the calibrations sources used on the Hitomi spacecraft and which will also fly on its successor, XARM. Here we present a simulation package based on the particle transport GEANT4 toolkit. Using this package, we compute the results for different targets and window configurations for the MXS's. The chemical and physical properties of interstellar dust in the densest regions of the Galaxy are still not well understood. X-rays provide a powerful probe since they can penetrate gas and dust over a wide range of column densities (up to $10^{24}\ \rm{cm}^{-2}$). The interaction (scattering and absorption) with the medium imprints spectral signatures that reflect the individual atoms which constitute the gas, molecule, or solid. In this work we investigate the ability of high resolution X-ray spectroscopy to probe the properties of cosmic grains containing iron. Although iron is heavily depleted into interstellar dust, the nature of the Fe-bearing grains is still largely uncertain. In our analysis we use iron K-edge synchrotron data of minerals likely present in the ISM dust taken at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. We explore the prospects of determining the chemical composition and the size of astrophysical dust in the Galactic centre and in molecular clouds with future X-ray missions. The energy resolution and the effective area of the present X-ray telescopes are not sufficient to detect and study the Fe K-edge, even for bright X-ray sources. From the analysis of the extinction cross sections of our dust models implemented in the spectral fitting program SPEX, the Fe K-edge is promising for investigating both the chemistry and the size distribution of the interstellar dust. We find that the chemical composition regulates the X-ray absorption fine structures in the post edge region, whereas the scattering feature in the pre-edge is sensitive to the mean grain size. Finally, we note that the Fe K-edge is insensitive to other dust properties, such as the porosity and the geometry of the dust., 11 pages, 10 figures. SRON is developing X-ray transition edge sensor (TES) calorimeters arrays, as a backup technology for X-IFU instrument on the ATHENA space observatory. These detectors are based on a superconducting TiAu bilayer TES with critical temperature of 100 mK on a 1 μm thick SiN membrane with Au or Au/Bi absorbers. Number of devices have been fabricated and measured using a Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) readout system with 1-5 MHz bias frequencies. We measured IV curves, critical temperature, thermal conductance, noise and also X-ray energy resolution at number of selected bias points. So far our best calorimeter shows 3.9 eV X-ray resolution at 6 keV. Here we present a summary of our results and the latest status of development of X-ray calorimeters at SRON.

In 2016 we carried out a Swift monitoring program to track the X-ray hardness variability of eight type-I AGN over a year. The purpose of this monitoring was to find intense obscuration events in AGN, and thereby study them by triggering joint XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and HST observations. We successfully accomplished this for NGC 3783 in December 2016. We found heavy X-ray absorption produced by an obscuring outflow in this AGN. As a result of this obscuration, interesting absorption features appear in the UV and X-ray spectra, which are not present in the previous epochs. Namely, the obscuration produces broad and blue-shifted UV absorption lines of Ly$\alpha$, C IV, and N V, together with a new high-ionisation component producing Fe XXV and Fe XXVI absorption lines. In soft X-rays, only narrow emission lines stand out above the diminished continuum as they are not absorbed by the obscurer. Our analysis shows that the obscurer partially covers the central source with a column density of few $10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$, outflowing with a velocity of few thousand km s$^{-1}$. The obscuration in NGC 3783 is variable and lasts for about a month. Unlike the commonly-seen warm-absorber winds at pc-scale distances from the black hole, the eclipsing wind in NGC 3783 is located at about 10 light days. Our results suggest the obscuration is produced by an inhomogeneous and clumpy medium, consistent with clouds in the base of a radiatively-driven disk wind at the outer broad-line region of the AGN., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (A&A), 6 pages, 6 figures

TNO, in cooperation with Micromega-Dynamics, SRON, Dutch Space and CSL, has designed a compact breadboard cryogenic delay line (figure 1) for use in future space interferometry missions. The work is performed under ESA contract 17.747/03 in preparation for the DARWIN mission. The breadboard (BB) delay line is representative of a flight mechanism. The delay line has a single stage voice coil actuator for Optical Path Difference (OPD) control, driving a two mirror cat’s eye. Magnetic bearings provide frictionless and wear free operation with zero-hysteresis. The design of the BB delay line has been completed. The development test program, including operation at 100 K has been completed. The verification test programme is currently being carried out and will include functional testing at 40 K.

Supermassive black holes in the nuclei of active galaxies expel large amounts of matter through powerful winds of ionized gas. The archetypal active galaxy NGC 5548 has been studied for decades, and high-resolution X-ray and UV observations have previously shown a persistent ionized outflow. An observing campaign in 2013 with six space observatories shows the nucleus to be obscured by a long-lasting, clumpy stream of ionized gas never seen before. It blocks 90% of the soft X-ray emission and causes simultaneous deep, broad UV absorption troughs. The outflow velocities of this gas are up to five times faster than those in the persistent outflow, and at a distance of only a few light days from the nucleus, it may likely originate from the accretion disk., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures. We present the results of a recent (March 2011) 160 ks Chandra-LETGS observation of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4593, and the analysis of archival X-ray and UV spectra taken with XMM-Newton and HST/STIS in 2002. We find evidence of a multi-component warm absorber (WA) in the X-rays with four distinct ionisation degrees (log xi = 1.0, log xi = 1.7, log xi = 2.4, and log xi = 3.0) outflowing at several hundreds of km/s. In the UV we detect 15 kinematic components in the absorbers, blueshifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the source, ranging from -60 km/s to -1520 km/s. Although the predicted CIV and NV column densities from the low-ionisation X-ray outflow are in agreement with those measured for some components in the STIS spectrum, there are kinematic discrepancies that may prevent both the X-ray and UV absorbers from originating in the same intervening gas. We derive upper limits on the location of the absorbers finding that the high-ionisation gas lie within ~6 - 29 pc from the central ionising source, while the low-ionisation gas is located at several hundreds of pc. This is consistent with our line of sight passing through different parts of a stratified wind. The total kinetic energy of the outflows injected into the surroundings of the host galaxy only accounts for a tiny fraction of the bolometric luminosity of the source, and it is therefore unlikely that they may cause a significant impact in the interstellar medium of NGC 4593 in a given single episode of activity., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 9 tables. The Astro-H (Hitomi) Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) was a pioneering imaging x-ray spectrometer with 5 eV energy resolution at 6 keV. The instrument used a microcalorimeter array at the focus of a high-throughput soft x-ray telescope to enable high-resolution non-dispersive spectroscopy in the soft x-ray waveband (0:3-12 keV). We present the suite of ground calibration measurements acquired from 2012-2015, including characterization of the detector system, anti-coincidence detector, optical blocking filters, and filter-wheel filters. The calibration of the 36-pixel silicon thermistor microcalorimeter array includes parameterizations of the energy gain scale and line spread function for each event grade over a range of instrument operating conditions, as well as quantum efficiency measurements. The x-ray transmission of the set of five Al/polyimide thin-film optical blocking filters mounted inside the SXS dewar has been modeled based on measurements at synchrotron beamlines, including with high spectral resolution at the C, N, O, and Al K-edges. In addition, we present the x-ray transmission of the dewar gate valve and of the filters mounted on the SXS filter wheel (external to the dewar), including beryllium, polyimide, and neutral density filters.

The X-ray integral field unit for the Athena mission consists of a microcalorimeter transition edge sensor pixel array. Incoming photons generate pulses which are analyzed in terms of energy, in order to assemble the X-ray spectrum. Usually this is done by means of optimal filtering in either time or frequency domain. In this paper we investigate an alternative method by means of principle component analysis. This method attempts to find the main components of an orthogonal set of functions to describe the data. We show, based on simulations, what the influence of various instrumental effects is on this type of analysis. We compare analyses both in time and frequency domain. Athena is a European X-ray observatory, scheduled for launch in $$\sim $$ 2028. Athena will employ a high-resolution imaging spectrometer called X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU), consisting of an array of $$\sim $$ 4000 transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeter pixels. For the readout of X-IFU, we are developing frequency domain multiplexing, which is the baseline readout system. In this paper, we report on the performance of a TES X-ray calorimeter array fabricated at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) at MHz frequencies for the baseline of X-IFU detector. During single-pixel AC bias characterization, we measured X-ray energy resolutions (at 6 keV) of about 2.9 eV at both 2.3 and 3.7 MHz. Furthermore, in the multiplexing mode, we measured X-ray energy resolutions of about 2.9 eV at 1.3 and 1.7 MHz.

We study the absorption and scattering of X-ray radiation by interstellar dust particles, which allows us to access the physical and chemical properties of dust. The interstellar dust composition is not well understood, especially on the densest sight lines of the Galactic Plane. X-rays provide a powerful tool in this study. We present newly acquired laboratory measurements of silicate compounds taken at the Soleil synchrotron facility in Paris using the Lucia beamline. The dust absorption profiles resulting from this campaign were used in this pilot study to model the absorption by interstellar dust along the line of sight of the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) GX 5-1. The measured laboratory cross-sections were adapted for astrophysical data analysis and the resulting extinction profiles of the Si K-edge were implemented in the SPEX spectral fitting program. We derive the properties of the interstellar dust along the line of sight by fitting the Si K-edge seen in absorption in the spectrum of GX 5-1. We measured the hydrogen column density towards GX 5-1 to be $3.40\pm0.1\times10^{22} \rm cm^{-2}$. The best fit of the silicon edge in the spectrum of GX 5-1 is obtained by a mixture of olivine and pyroxene. In this study, our modeling is limited to Si absorption by silicates with different Mg:Fe ratios. We obtained an abundance of silicon in dust of $4.0\pm0.3\times10^{-5}$ per H atom and a lower limit for total abundance, considering both gas and dust, of $>4.4\times10^{-5}$ per H atom, which leads to a gas to dust ratio of >0.22. Furthermore, an enhanced scattering feature in the Si K-edge may suggest the presence of large particles along the line of sight., 16 pages, 11 figures. High-quality, high-resolution X-ray spectra were obtained of Sco X-1 with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard the XMM-Newton satellite. The spectrum around the oxygen K-edge is searched for signatures indicative for EXAFS. Analysis shows a clear indication of EXAFS with photo-electron scattering distances in the absorbing medium in a range that applies to many solids. When scattering of the photo-electron on Oxygen atoms is assumed, the oxygen-to-oxygen atom distances found are 2.75 A. This fits with distances as found in amorphous water ice, although water ice is thought to be an unlikely constituent of the diffuse interstellar clouds that form the absorbing medium towards Sco X-1.

An extensive multi-satellite campaign on NGC 5548 has revealed this archetypal Seyfert-1 galaxy to be in an exceptional state of persistent heavy absorption. Our observations taken in 2013-2014 with XMM-Newton, Swift, NuSTAR, INTEGRAL, Chandra, HST and two ground-based observatories have together enabled us to establish that this unexpected phenomenon is caused by an outflowing stream of weakly ionised gas (called the obscurer), extending from the vicinity of the accretion disk to the broad-line region. In this work we present the details of our campaign and the data obtained by all the observatories. We determine the spectral energy distribution of NGC 5548 from near-infrared to hard X-rays by establishing the contribution of various emission and absorption processes taking place along our line of sight towards the central engine. We thus uncover the intrinsic emission and produce a broadband continuum model for both obscured (average summer 2013 data) and unobscured ($, Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 19 pages, 13 figures

High resolution X-ray spectra of the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) on board the XMM satellite are used to resolve the oxygen K absorption edge. By combining spectra of low and high extinction sources, the observed absorption edge can be split in the true interstellar (ISM) extinction and the instrumental absorption. The detailed ISM edge structure closely follows the edge structure of neutral oxygen as derived by theoretical R-matrix calculations. However, the position of the theoretical edge requires a wavelength shift. In addition the detailed instrumental RGS absorption edge structure is presented. All results are verified by comparing to a subset of Chandra LETG-HRC observations.

The RGS instrument is the X–ray spectrometer on board the XMM-Newton satellite, launched December 1999, and still fully operational. It consists of a reflection grating to disperse the incoming X–rays and a CCD camera as detector. In the past fifteen years a lot of experience has been gained in operating and calibrating this instrument. In this presentation we report on the calibration methods and status, new instrumental modes and detector performance, which were acquired and developed based on the in-flight experiences with the instrument. Selecting the proper operating modes, combined with careful data processing based on target characteristics and science goals, allows detection of weak spectral features, despite slowly degrading detectors due to radiation damage and contamination. At present the instrument has excellent health status and performance, and will be one of the few major instruments for X–ray spectroscopy in the coming years, until supplemented by new missions like ASTRO-H and, in particular, Athena.

We present in this paper the results of a 270 ks Chandra HETGS observation in the context of a large multiwavelength campaign on the Seyfert galaxy Mrk 509. The HETGS spectrum allows us to study the high ionisation warm absorber and the Fe-K complex in Mrk 509. We search for variability in the spectral properties of the source with respect to previous observations in this campaign, as well as for evidence of ultra-fast outflow signatures. The Chandra HETGS X-ray spectrum of Mrk 509 was analysed using the SPEX fitting package. We confirm the basic structure of the warm absorber found in the 600 ks XMM-Newton RGS observation observed three years earlier, consisting of five distinct ionisation components in a multikinematic regime. We find little or no variability in the physical properties of the different warm absorber phases with respect to previous observations in this campaign, except for component D2 which has a higher column density at the expense of component C2 at the same outflow velocity (-240 km/s). Contrary to prior reports we find no -700 km/s outflow component. The O VIII absorption line profiles show an average covering factor of 0.81 +/- 0.08 for outflow velocities faster than -100 km/s, similar to those measured in the UV. This supports the idea of a patchy wind. The relative metal abundances in the outflow are close to proto-solar. The narrow component of the Fe Kalpha emission line shows no changes with respect to previous observations which confirms its origin in distant matter. The narrow line has a red wing that can be interpreted to be a weak relativistic emission line. We find no significant evidence of ultra-fast outflows in our new spectrum down to the sensitivity limit of our data., 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Growth hormone (GH) exerts direct differentiative and proliferative effects on osteoblasts. We studied 125I-labeled human (h) GH binding to primary mouse osteoblasts derived from collagenase-treated 18-day fetal mouse calvaria. Scatchard analysis of the data revealed a single class of high affinity GH receptors (apparent Ka= 5·74 × 109 m−1) with 2200 sites per cell. Affinity cross-linking and SDS-PAGE electrophoresis showed two bands with apparent molecular masses of 120 and 70 kDa. Mouse osteoblasts express GH receptor mRNA with gene transcripts of 4·2 and 1·2 kb, at levels which reach approximately 1/6 of those in mouse liver and 1/3 of those in mouse muscle. Two populations of undifferentiated and diffentiated osteoblasts, obtained by sequential collagenase digestion of mouse calvaria, were used to study the relationship between osteoblastic phenotype and GH receptor expression. Although the affinity of the receptors in undifferentiated and differentiated cells was the same, the capacity was significantly higher (1·45 ± 1·0% vs 2·39 ± 0·9%, P=0·03) in differentiated cells. This stresses the specific importance of the osteoblast as a target cell for GH. The differentiating potential of the vitamin A derivative retinoic acid was subsequently used experimentally to induce differentiation in the cells. Retinoic acid increased 125I-hGH binding to preosteoblasts (153%, P=0·02). Together, these data demonstrate the presence of a high affinity GH receptor in mouse osteoblasts which is related to differentiation. Journal of Endocrinology (1996) 150, 465–472

The SXS instrument is the Soft X-ray micro-calorimeter Spectrometer planned for the Japanese ASTRO-H satellite, scheduled to be launched in 2014. In this paper we describe the X-ray calibration sources used in this instrument. These sources use light sensitive photo-cathodes to generate electrons, which in turn generate the X-rays. This design has the unique property to allow for fast discrete pulsations of the generated X-rays. This enables the energy scale calibration of the instrument simultaneously with astronomical observations, without adding to the background in the astronomical data. Flight-model sources have been made, and a number of them have been operating in the past several months to monitor their behaviour. Here we report on the characterisation and performance of these sources. In addition, we will elaborate on the nature and expected accuracy of the energy calibration, in relation to the expected stability of the instrument, given the calibration source strength and its mode of operation.

Active Galactic Nuclei often show evidence of photoionized outflows. A major uncertainty in models for these outflows is the distance ($R$) to the gas from the central black hole. In this paper we use the HST/COS data from a massive multi-wavelength monitoring campaign on the bright Seyfert I galaxy Mrk 509, in combination with archival HST/STIS data, to constrain the location of the various kinematic components of the outflow. We compare the expected response of the photoionized gas to changes in ionizing flux with the changes measured in the data using the following steps: 1) We compare the column densities of each kinematic component measured in the 2001 STIS data with those measured in the 2009 COS data; 2) We use time-dependent photionization calculations with a set of simulated lightcurves to put statistical upper limits on the hydrogen number density that are consistent with the observed small changes in the ionic column densities; 3) From the upper limit on the number density, we calculate a lower limit on the distance to the absorber from the central source via the prior determination of the ionization parameter. Our method offers two improvements on traditional timescale analysis. First, we account for the physical behavior of AGN lightcurves. Second, our analysis accounts for the quality of measurement in cases where no changes are observed in the absorption troughs. The very small variations in trough ionic column densities (mostly consistent with no change) between the 2001 and 2009 epochs allow us to put statistical lower limits on the distance between 100--200 pc for all the major UV absorption components at a confidence level of 99%. These results are mainly consistent with the independent distance estimates derived for the warm absorbers from the simultaneous X-ray spectra., Accepted to A&A (06 APR 2012)
