In this work the role that charge delocalization plays in the non-linear optical response of ionic liquids is evaluated. The first hyperpolarizability for the non-linear process of second harmonic generation (SHG) and second hyperpolarizability for the non-linear process of electro-optical Kerr-Effect (EOKE) of a large number of ionic liquid forming ions were estimated by means of density functional theory calculations. The results point to that both charge delocalization and molecular geometry are the key features that govern their hyperpolarizabilities. Our findings show that some of the most commonly used anions in ionic liquids are expected to present strong non-linear responses while common cations present a much more limited performance. However, this limitation can be overcome by a proper tailoring of cations to present charge delocalization over large molecular regions. The hypothesis of additivity of hyperpolarizabilities in ionic liquids is tested and exploited to obtain a map of second and third order non-linear susceptibilities of 1496 ion combinations. We discuss fluctuation-induced forces in a system described by a continuous Landau-Ginzburg model with a quenched disorder field, defined in a $d$-dimensional slab geometry $\mathbb R^{d-1}\times[0,L]$. A series representation for the quenched free energy in terms of the moments of the partition function is presented. In each moment an order parameter-like quantity can be defined, with a particular correlation length of the fluctuations. For some specific strength of the non-thermal control parameter, it appears a moment of the partition function where the fluctuations associated to the order parameter-like quantity becomes long-ranged. In this situation, these fluctuations become sensitive to the boundaries. In the Gaussian approximation, using the spectral zeta-function method, we evaluate a functional determinant for each moment of the partition function. The analytic structure of each spectral zeta-function depending on the dimension of the space for the case of Dirichlet, Neumann Laplacian and also periodic boundary conditions is discussed in a unified way. Considering the moment of the partition function with the largest correlation length of the fluctuations, we evaluate the induced force between the boundaries, for Dirichlet boundary conditions. The nonmesonic weak decay of $\Lambda$ hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach which is extended to include the three--nucleon induced mechanism. We adopt a nuclear matter formalism which, through the local density approximation, allows us to model finite hypernuclei, a one--meson--exchange weak transition potential and a Bonn nucleon--nucleon strong potential. One--, two-- and three--nucleon induced weak decay rates are predicted for $^{12}_\Lambda$C by including ground state correlations up to second order in the nucleon--nucleon potential and the recoil of the residual nucleus. Three--nucleon stimulated decays, $\Lambda NNN\to nNNN$ ($N=n$ or $p$), are considered here for the first time. The obtained decay rates compare well with the latest KEK and FINUDA data. The three--nucleon induced rate turns out to be dominated by $nnp$-- and $npp$--induced decays, it amounts to $\sim$ 7\% of the total nonmesonic rate and it is $\sim 1/2$ of the neutron--induced decay rate. The reduction effect of the nuclear recoil is particularly relevant for the three--nucleon induced rates ($\sim$ 15\%), less important for the two--nucleon induced rates ($\sim$ 4\%) and negligible for the one--nucleon induced rates. Given the non--negligible size of the three--nucleon induced contribution and consequently its importance in the precise determination of the complete set of decay rates, new measurements and/or experimental analysis are encouraged., Comment: Accept in Phys. The non--mesonic weak decay of double--$\Lambda$ hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach. Besides the nucleon--induced mechanism, $\Lambda N\to nN$, widely studied in single--$\Lambda$ hypernuclei, additional hyperon--induced mechanisms, $\Lambda \Lambda\to \Lambda n$, $\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^0 n$ and $\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^-p$, are accessible in double--$\Lambda$ hypernuclei and are investigated here. As in previous works on single--$\Lambda$ hypernuclei, we adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation and a one--meson exchange weak transition potential (including the ground state pseudoscalar and vector octets mesons) supplemented by correlated and uncorrelated two--pion--exchange contributions. The weak decay rates are evaluated for hypernuclei in the region of the experimentally accessible light hypernuclei $^{10}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$Be and $^{13}_{\Lambda\Lambda}$B. Our predictions are compared with a few previous evaluations. The rate for the $\Lambda \Lambda\to \Lambda n$ decay is dominated by $K$--, $K^*$-- and $\eta$--exchange and turns out to be about 2.5\% of the free $\Lambda$ decay rate, $\Gamma_{\Lambda}^{\rm free}$, while the total rate for the $\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^0 n$ and $\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^- p$ decays, dominated by $\pi$--exchange, amounts to about 0.25\% of $\Gamma_{\Lambda}^{\rm free}$. The experimental measurement of these decays would be essential for the beginning of a systematic study of the non--mesonic decay of strangeness $-2$ hypernuclei. X-ray absorption near-edge and grazing incidence X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy are employed to investigate the electronic structure of ZnFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ thin films. The spectroscopy techniques are used to determine the non-equilibrium cation site occupancy as a function of depth and oxygen pressure during deposition and its effects on the magnetic properties. It is found that low deposition pressures below 10$^{-3}$ mbar cause iron superoccupation of tetrahedral sites without Zn$^{2+}$ inversion, resulting in an ordered magnetic phase with high room temperature magnetic moment., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. We have studied the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic defects in the magnetic and electrical transport properties of Co-doped ZnO thin films. X ray absorption measurements show that Co substitute Zn in the ZnO structure and it is in the 2+ oxidation state. Magnetization (M) measurements show that doped samples are mainly paramagnetic. From M vs. H loops measured at 5 K we found that the values of the orbital L and spin S numbers are between 1 and 1.3 for L and S = 3/2, in agreement with the representative values for isolated Co 2+. The obtained negative values of the Curie-Weiss temperatures indicate the existence of antiferromagnetic interactions between transition metal atoms., Comment: To be published in Journal of Materials Science

Transparent pure and Cu-doped (2.5, 5 and 10 at. %) anatase TiO2 thin films were grown by pulsed laser deposition technique on LaAlO3 substrates. The samples were structurally characterized by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The magnetic properties were measured using a SQUID. All films have a FM-like behaviour. In the case of the Cu-doped samples, the magnetic cycles are almost independent of the Cu concentration. Cu atoms are forming CuO and/or substituting Ti in TiO2. The thermal treatment in air promotes the CuO segregation. Since CuO is antiferromagnetic, the magnetic signals present in the films could be assigned to this Cu substitutionally replacing cations in TiO2., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, Surface Science (in press)

In this work we present an X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy characterization of the local environment of the impurity in room temperature ferromagnetic anatase TiO2 thin films doped with Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn, deposited on LaAlO3 substrate by Pulsed Laser Deposition. It was found that there is a considerable amount of impurity atoms substituting Ti in TiO2 anatase, although the presence of metal transition monoxide clusters can not be discarded. From our results we infer that the observed room temperature ferromagnetism of the samples could be assigned to the metal transition atoms replacing Ti in TiO2 anatase., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, Physica B (in press)

In recent years there has been an intense search for room temperature ferromagnetism in doped dilute semiconductors, which have many potentially applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. We report here the unexpected observation of significant room temperature ferromagnetism in a semiconductor doped with nonmagnetic impurities, Cu-doped TiO$_2$ thin films grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition. The magnetic moment, calculated from the magnetization curves, resulted surprisingly large, about 1.5 $\mu_B$ per Cu atom. A large magnetic moment was also obtained from ab initio calculations using the supercell method for TiO$_2$ with Cu impurities, but only if an oxygen vacancy in the nearest-neighbour shell of Cu was present. This result suggests that the role of oxygen vacancies is crucial for the appearance of ferromagnetism.
