1. Magnetic and luminescent coordination networks based on imidazolium salts and lanthanides for sensitive ratiometric thermometry

Abstract: The synthesis and characterization of six new lanthanide networks [Ln(L)(ox)(H2O)] with Ln = Eu3+, Gd3+, Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+ and Yb3+ is reported. They were synthesized by solvo-ionothermal reaction of lanthanide nitrate Ln(NO3)3·xH2O with the 1,3-bis(carboxymethyl)imidazolium [HL] ligand and oxalic acid (H2ox) in a water/ethanol solution. The crystal structure of these compounds has been solved on single crystals and the magnetic and luminescent properties have been investigated relying on intrinsic properties of the lanthanide ions. The synthetic strategy has been extended to mixed lanthanide networks leading to four isostructural networks of formula [Tb1−xEux(L)(ox)(H2O)] with x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05 and 0.10. These materials were assessed as luminescent ratiometric thermometers based on the emission intensities of ligand, Tb3+ and Eu3+. The best sensitivities were obtained using the ratio between the emission intensities of Eu3+ (5D0→7F2 transition) and of the ligand as the thermometric parameter. [Tb0.97Eu0.03(L)(ox)(H2O)] was found to be one of the best thermometers among lanthanide-bearing coordination polymers and metal-organic frameworks, operative in the physiological range with a maximum sensitivity of 1.38%·K−1 at 340 K.

2. Oxygen crystallographic positions in thin films by non-destructive resonant elastic X-ray scattering

Abstract: Precisely locating oxygen atoms in nanosized systems is a real challenge. The traditional strategies used for bulk samples fail at probing samples with much less matter. Resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS) experiments in the X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) domain have already proved their efficiency in probing transition metal cations in thin films, but it is not feasible to perform such experiments at the low-energy edges of lighter atoms – such as oxygen. In this study, the adequacy of using REXS in the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) domain, also known as extended diffraction absorption fine structure (EDAFS), to solve this issue is shown. The technique has been validated on a bulk FeV2O4 sample, through comparison with results obtained with conventional X-ray diffraction measurements. Subsequently, the positions of oxygen atoms in a thin film were unveiled by using the same strategy. The approach described in this study can henceforth be applied to solve the crystallographic structure of oxides, and will help in better understanding the properties and functionalities which are dictated by the positions of the oxygen atoms in functional nanosized materials.

Abstract: International audience; Understanding the polarization switching mechanisms at play in ferroelectric materials is crucial for their exploitation in electronic devices. The conventional centrosymmetric reference structure-based mechanism which accounts for ferroelectricity in most of the usual displacive ferroelectric materials is too energy-demanding for some newly diagnosed ferroelectric materials such as the Ga2-xFexO3 (0.8 ≤ x ≤ 1.4) compounds. Some alternative theoretical propositions have been made and need experimental confirmation. A dual-scale electron microscopy study is performed on thin films of the Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 multiferroic compound. A wide scale precession-assisted electron diffraction tomography study first allows the determination of the structure the compound adopts in thin films, and even permits the refinement of the atomic positions within this structure. Cationic mobility is suggested for two of the atomic positions through the existence of extra electronic density. A local in situ high resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy study then allows confirming these mobilities by directly spotting the cationic displacements on successively acquired images. The whole study confirms an unconventional switching mechanism via local domain wall motion in this compound.

Abstract: International audience; HypothesisWhile controlled and efficient exfoliation of layered oxides often remains a time consuming challenge, the surface modification of inorganic nanosheets is of outmost importance for future applications. The functionalization of the bulk material prior to exfoliation should allow the application of tools developped for Van der Waals materials to directly produce functionalized oxide nanosheets.ExperimentsThe Aurivillius phase Bi2SrTa2O9 is functionalized by a linear aliphatic phosphonic acid via microwave-assisted reactions. The structure of the hybrid material and the coordination of the phosphonate group is scrutinized, notably by Pair Distribution Function. This functionalized layered oxide is then exfoliated in one hour in organic solvent, using high shear force dispersion. The obtained nanosheets are characterized in suspension and as deposits to ensure their chemical integrity.FindingsThe covalent functionalization decreases the electrostatic cohesion between the inorganic layers leading to an efficient exfoliation in short time under shearing. The functionalization of the bulk material is preserved on the nanosheets upon exfoliation and plays a major role to enable liquid-phase exfoliation and in the stability of the resulting suspensions. This strategy is very promising for the straighforward preparation of functionalized nanosheets, paving the way for versatile design of new (multi)functional hybrid nanosheets for various potential applications.

Abstract: International audience; The compound [BiCNIm]3[DyCl6] was synthesized from a nitrile-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquid [BiCNIm][Cl] and DyCl3 ⋅ 6H2O in acetonitrile using solvothermal conditions. Structural characterization reveals that the Dy3+ ions are in a quasi-regular octahedral environment, formed by six chloride anions. The magnetic study indicates that this mononuclear compound exhibits a Single Ion Magnet behaviour. This behaviour is compared to that of other mononuclear compounds containing Dy3+ ions in various octahedral environment.

Abstract: Nanoparticle assemblies are very attractive because they allow the fine-tuning of magnetic properties by taking advantage of collective behavior ruled by interparticle interactions. Nevertheless, great efforts to control the spatial arrangement of nanoparticles still have to be developed in order to integrate such nanomaterials in devices for applications in fields such as sensors and recording media. Herein, we report on the assembly of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles promoted by copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) “click” reaction. Azido-terminated nanoparticles were assembled onto alkyne-terminated gold substrates. The assembly mechanism was investigated by monitoring the density of nanoparticles as a function of their size and concentration. The kinetics of the assembly process is exponential and is favored by the increase of the nanoparticle size and of the concentration. We show that the assembly of nanoparticles is controlled by the random sequential adsorption (RSA) mechanism below a critical size. In contrast, large nanoparticles allow strong dipolar interactions which participate actively in the assembly process, thus they avoid the RSA pathway. These two different mechanism pathways have a significant influence on the spatial arrangement of nanoparticles. The RSA results in rather isolated small nanoparticles at the earliest reaction times which become gradually a discontinuous monolayer. In contrast, the dipolar interaction assisted RSA mechanism (DIA-RSA) favors linear or 2D small assemblies which quickly grow in tight-packed monolayers of nanoparticles. Finally, the magnetic collective properties of these assemblies are markedly favored by the increase of the nanoparticle size.

Abstract: International audience; The insertion of phenylbutylamine into a layered perovskite of formula H2Bi0.1Sr0.85Ta2O7 (HST) has been investigated as a function of the synthesis conditions. For short reactions times (1.5 h), achieved using microwave assisted reactions, a short interlayer distance (2.2 nm) is obtained (PBA1-HST) whereas for long reaction times (18 h) achieved using classical solvothermal reaction, a much larger interlayer distance is obtained (3.0 nm) (PBA3-HST). The compounds are well crystallized despite a more pronounced disorder of the organic moiety for PBA1-HST, evidenced by IR spectroscopy. The organic loading is very similar for both phases, and no difference in the 13C CP/MAS solid state NMR spectra could be evidenced. 1D electron density profiles established from XRD patterns allow to precise the organization of the molecules within the interlayer space. More subtle variations of the reaction parameters tend to show that there is a gradual evolution from the kinetic product, PBA1-HST, to the thermodynamic one, PBA3-HST, but it has not been possible to isolate a monophasic intermediate phase. Yet a compound with an intermediate interlayer distance could be isolated as a pure phase, using a prefunctionalized precursor as starting material (PBA2-HST, 2.7 nm). It was finally shown that it is possible to realize a mutual conversion of PBA2-HST and PBA3-HST by post-synthesis solvent treatment.This work completes the emerging studies on microwave-assisted functionalization of layered oxides and paves the way to a fine tailoring of hybrid materials with specific structures and properties.

Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors based on metal thin films are very attractive for detection of biomolecules. Nanoparticle assemblies were recently demonstrated to significantly enhance sensitivity. Here, we show that the fine control of the structure of nanoparticle assemblies is critical to optimize the sensitivity. Iron oxide (Fe3-δO4) nanoparticles were assembled onto a gold thin film by performing the Copper Catalyzed Alkyne-Azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) “click” reaction. A biotin derivative was grafted by CuAAC at the surface of nanoparticle assemblies in order to detect streptavidin (SA). The fine control of the size and of the density of nanoparticles allowed tuning the surface plasmon waves at the surface of the gold thin film in order to optimize the response of the sensors. The accessibility of biotin at the nanoparticle surface to SA was also investigated as a function of the interparticle distance. We show that the interplay between the volume fraction of iron oxide and the accessibility of biotin at the nanoparticle surface is critical to enhance the sensitivity of SPR sensors.

Abstract: Owing to its potential to enhance the effective magnetic anisotropy energy of nanoparticles, exchange bias has been extensively studied during the last few years. Although most of studies have been conducted in the powder state, the effect of the dimensionality of nanoparticle assemblies has been scarcely investigated. In this context, we report on the study of the collective properties of monolayers of exchange-biased nanoparticles with different core–shell structures. Nanoparticles consist in a ferrimagnetic Fe3−δO4 core coated with an antiferromagnetic CoO shell. They were assembled in monolayers with local order by using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. Exchange bias is significantly altered in 2D assemblies in comparison to powder samples which can be assimilated to 3D random assemblies. We show that exchange bias in Fe3−δO4@CoO nanoparticles is directly influenced by dipolar interactions between Fe3−δO4 cores, which are enhanced by shape anisotropy of 2D assemblies. Abstract: Multifunctional nanocomposite materials recently emerged as a powerful concept because they offer to combine physical properties of different inorganic materials. Besides the simple combination of physical properties, the real challenge is to provide high control of the structure of nanocomposites (i.e. the spatial arrangement of the two entities, interface or separating distance, etc.). In this case, synergy between the two entities may be favoured in order to dramatically enhance the physical properties. Herein, we report on a multifunctional hybrid nanocomposite material consisting of a zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod array decorated with iron oxide (Fe3−δO4) nanoparticles through a 1,4-phenylenebis(phosphonic acid) (PBA) linkage. We report on an original, easy to process, and versatile preparation method based on self-assembly mediated by specific interactions between metal oxides and phosphonic acid groups. This strategy allows grafting irreversibly Fe3−δO4 nanoparticles to ZnO nanorod arrays while preserving the pristine crystal structure of both inorganic entities. The structure and physical properties of such hybrid nanocomposites were investigated by means of a large panel of characterisation techniques: SEM, TEM, FTIR, XPS, SQUID and PL. The assembly mechanism was studied by varying several experimental parameters, such as the concentration of the ligand solution and nanoparticle suspension as well as the reaction time of ZnO arrays in the aforementioned suspensions. Finally, we show for the first time that the ZnO/PBA/Fe3−δO4 nanocomposite displays enhanced magnetic and optical properties as a result of dual synergy. We show unambiguously that a ZnO nanorod array acts as a very efficient anisotropic scaffold which favours unidirectional dipolar interactions and enhances the in-axis collective magnetic properties of Fe3−δO4 nanoparticles (a 10-fold increase of the coercive field in comparison to the same magnetic nanoparticles in the powder state). ZnO nanorods also benefit from Fe3−δO4 nanoparticles by enhancement of their optical properties in the visible range (a 2-fold increase of PL intensity with respect to bare ZnO nanorods) which we propose to result from photon energy transfer.

Abstract: Pr0.8Na0.05K0.15MnO3 sample was prepared by solid-state reaction method. Refinement of the X-ray diffraction patterns shows that the sample is single phase and crystallizes in the orthorhombic structure with Pbnm space group. This result was confirmed by using the electron diffraction pattern for the sample using the [0 0 1] orientation. Analyzing temperature and field dependences of magnetization around the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition reveals the sample undergoing the second-order magnetic phase transition. The isothermal entropy changes Δ S as a function of temperature in different magnetic fields were determined. A phenomenological model is used to calculate magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of Pr0.8Na0.05K0.15MnO3 compound. The maximum values of Δ S max and the relative cooling power (RCP) increase with increasing applied magnetic field. Landau theory and phenomenological universal curves of entropy change confirm the second order phase transition.

Abstract: The fabrication of crystalline silicon thin films on foreign substrates is an attractive and alternative approach to the ingot casting aiming to the reduction of the total costs of photovoltaic cells and modules. The purpose of this work is to describe the CRYSTALSI process which aims at forming polycrystalline silicon films thanks to the thermal crystallization of amorphous silicon layer deposited on aluminium based substrates. The latest are used as a catalyzer for silicon crystallization but also as a back metal contact and reflector for photovoltaic solar cells. Two types of aluminium substrates were applied in these studies: a pure aluminium substrate (99.7% purity) and a silicon rich aluminium substrate containing about 12% of silicon. Silicon thicknesses between 1 and 10 μm were deposited and then annealed at temperatures of 490 °C, 520 °C and 550 °C and for duration times from 5 min to 12 h. The crystallized silicon films were then characterized by Raman spectroscopy, by scanning electron microscopy and by electron backscatter diffraction. The analyses show that the resulting annealed film is composed of two distinct layers: a thin polycrystalline silicon film located just above the substrate and a thicker layer made of a mixture of silicon and aluminium. Contrary to the case of the pure aluminium substrate, the silicon rich aluminium substrate allow to obtain thick and continuous polycrystalline silicon layers due to a controlled diffusion of the silicon within the substrate. As a result, the crystallization at 550 °C of 5 μm thick amorphous silicon on silicon rich aluminium substrate led to the formation of a thick polycrystalline silicon layer composed of grains of few micrometers in size. A low activation energy of about 2 eV is extracted suggesting that the silicon rich aluminium substrate is a catalyzer for the crystallization of amorphous silicon. As for the AIC process, it can be noticed that the limiting step of the CRYSTALSI process is the diffusion of the silicon in the aluminium. A chemical etching using a HNO 3 , HF, H 2 O (72.5 ml/1.5 ml/28 ml) solution is found to be appropriate to remove the residual top layer, in order to have access to the polycrystalline silicon layer. This work demonstrates that the CRYSTALSI process can lead to the formation of polysilicon films that can serve as a seed layer for the growth of a thicker absorbing silicon film for photovoltaic applications.

Abstract: International audience; The solvothermal synthesis of novel metal–organic networks from the 1,3-bis(carboxymethyl)-imidazolium chloride ([H2L][Cl]) and cobalt or nickel salts (acetate or nitrate) in different solvents (water or ethanol and water/ethanol or water/ethylene glycol mixture) has been explored leading to four isotypic compounds of general formula [M(L)(H2O)4][Cl]·Solv with M = Ni or Co and Solv = H2O for 1 and 2, respectively, and M = Ni or Co and Solv = (EG)0.5 for 3 and 4, respectively, and two other isostructural compounds, namely, [Ni(L)(ox)0.5(μ2-H2O)0.5] (5) and [Co(L)(ox)0.5(μ2-H2O)0.5] (6) where the in situ formation of oxalate (ox) was observed. The structural characterizations evidence a significant influence of the solvent as well as of the metal salt on the structure and crystallinity of the final compounds, the former leading to observation of different magnetic behaviors. A one-dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior is thus observed in compounds 5 and 6 containing oxalate ligand while compounds 1–4 exhibited typical behavior of quasi-isolated magnetic species.

Abstract: Human serum albumin (HSA) nanoparticles emerge as promising carriers for drug delivery. Among challenges, one important issue is the design of HSA nanoparticles with a low mean size of ca. 50 nm and having a high drug payload. The original strategy developed here is to use sacrificial mesoporous nanosilica templates having a diameter close to 30 nm to drive the protein nanocapsule formation. This new approach ensures first an efficient high drug loading (ca. 30%) of Doxorubicin (DOX) in the porous silica by functionalizing silica with an aminosiloxane layer and then allows the one-step adsorption and the physical cross-linking of HSA by modifying the silica surface with isobutyramide (IBAM) groups. After silica template removal, homogenous DOX-loaded HSA nanocapsules (30–60 nm size) with high drug loading capacity (ca. 88%) are thus formed. Such nanocapsules are shown efficient in multicellular tumor spheroid models (MCTS) of human hepatocarcinoma cells by their significant growth inhibition with respect to controls. Such a new synthesis approach paves the way toward new protein based nanocarriers for drug delivery.

18. Microwave-assisted functionalization of the Aurivillius phase Bi

Abstract: The microwave-assisted functionalization of an Aurivillius phase is investigated towards various molecules – alcohols, diols and amino-alcohols – and the preferential reactivity of the various moieties is studied as a function of the reaction conditions., Microwave-assisted functionalization of the layered Aurivillius phase Bi2SrTa2O9 by alcohols is thoroughly investigated. The grafting of linear aliphatic and bulky alcohols is studied as a function of the starting material, underlining the importance of the prefunctionalization of the layered perovskite, for instance by butylamine. In addition, the functionalization by α,ω-alkanediols is explored. α,ω-alkanediols bearing long alkyl chains (nC > 3) adopt an unprecedented pillaring arrangement, whereas 1,3-propanediol and ethyleneglycol adopt a bilayer arrangement, only one out of the two hydroxyl groups being coordinated. Finally, the reactivities of alcohols and amines towards insertion are compared: the preferential reactivity of the two functional groups appears to be strongly dependent of the reaction conditions, and especially of the water content. This study is further extended to the case of amino-alcohol insertion. In this case, the amine group is preferentially bound, but it is possible to control the grafting of the alcohol moiety, thus going from a bilayer arrangement to a pillaring one. This work is of particular importance to be able to functionalize easily and rapidly layered oxides with elaborated molecules, bearing several different potentially reactive groups.

Abstract: Single crystals of the layered copper hydroxide dodecylsulfate Cu2(OH)3(C12H25SO4) have been obtained for the first time, by controlled hydrolysis of an aqueous copper acetate solution. Interestingly, this compound crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric space group (P21, a = 5.591(10) A, b = 6.108(11) A, c = 26.96(5) A, α = γ = 90°, β = 92.76°), which is further confirmed by nonlinear optical measurements. Within the course of the synthesis, a probable intermediate between Cu(OAc)2·H2O and the layered Cu2(OH)3(C12H25SO4) was isolated and characterized. X-ray structure analysis showed that this intermediate presents a ribbon-like structure of formula Cu3(C12H25SO4)2(CH3COO)2(OH)2(H2O)2. The magnetic properties of the layered Cu2(OH)3(C12H25SO4) have been analyzed in the high-temperature region (T > 20 K) by considering a high-temperature series expansion for a S = 1/2 Heisenberg two-dimensional triangular lattice. Abstract: We present a novel strategy to create an original nanostructured SPR biosensor with enhanced sensitivity. Our approach consists of using high refractive index dielectric materials to increase the sensitivity factor of a gold thin film despite its large evanescent electromagnetic field decay lengths. Iron oxide nanoparticles were grafted onto a gold thin film and were easily functionalized by biomolecular receptors through a two step copper catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) “click” reaction. This strategy allowed us to prepare a highly stable and robust nanostructured biosensor. We selected the very-well known biotin–streptavidin couple to demonstrate the efficiency of our strategy toward the enhancement of the detection of biomolecules without using any labelling of the target molecules. High refractive index nanoparticles were demonstrated to enhance markedly the sensitivity to the detection of streptavidin by increasing the sensitivity factor of the gold thin film and the accessibility of biotin groups (reduction of steric hindrance).

Abstract: Core-shell ferro(i)magnetic@antiferromagnetic (F(i)M@AFM) nanoparticles exhibiting exchange bias coupling are very promising to push back the superparamagnetic limits. However, their intrinsic magnetic properties can be strongly affected by interparticle interactions. This work reports on the collective properties of Fe3-dO4@CoO core-shell nanoparticles as function of the structure of their assembly. The structure of nanoparticle assembly is controlled by a copper (I) catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction between complementary functional groups located at the surface of both substrates and nanoparticles. 2D arrays of nanoparticles with tunable sizes ranging from clusters of few nanoparticles to a dense and homogenous monolayer were prepared. The spatial arrangement of nanoparticles strongly influences the exchange bias coupling which is significantly enhanced for large 2D nanoparticle assemblies and, even more in 3D assemblies such as powder, which favour weak and random dipolar interactions.

Abstract: International audience; Copper- and cobalt-based layered simple hydroxides (LSH) are successfully functionalized by a series of fluorene mono- and diphosphonic acids, using anionic exchange reactions and a preintercalation strategy. The lateral functionalization of the fluorene moieties has only little impact on the overall structure of the obtained layered hybrid materials but it influences the organization of the molecules within the interlamellar spacing. For bulky fluorene (9,9-dioctyl derivative), luminescence is preserved when inserted into copper and cobalt hydroxydes, whereas it is completely quenched for the other fluorenes. Detailed characterization of the internal structure and chemical bonding properties for copper- and cobalt-based hybrids is performed via ancillary experimental techniques. For the copper-based LSH class, for which more elusive findings are found, first-principles molecular dynamics simulations unravel the fundamental stabilizing role of the H-bonding network promoted within the local environments of the fluorene mono- and diphosphonic acids. The cobalt series of compounds constitute a new class of hybrid magnets, with ordering temperatures ranging from 11.8 to 17.8 K and show a clear magnetoelectric effect. This effect appears above a threshold magnetic field, which is null below the magnetic ordering temperature, and it persists in the paramagnetic regime till about 110 K.

Abstract: International audience; A series of hybrid metal (Zn, Cu, and Co) layered simple hydroxides (LSH) functionalized by surfactants, namely, dodecylsulfonate (DS0) or dodecylsulfate (DS–) and by tetrasulfonato metal (Cu, Co)-phthalocyanines, was synthesized by anionic exchange reactions and characterized by ancillary techniques. The electrochemical properties of these compounds were investigated by cyclic voltammetry in phosphate buffer solutions over a wide potential range including that suitable for oxygen reduction. The electroactivity of intralayer metal cations (Cu and Co) was evidenced as a function of the phosphate buffer pH. The redox properties of Co- and Cu-PcTS0 grafted in LSH (Zn, Co, and Cu) were also investigated in neutral pH solution, under argon, air, or O2 atmospheres. Interestingly, these hybrid compounds display an electrocatalytic behavior toward the reduction of oxygen. In particular with CoPcTS0-LSH, a sharp electrocatalytic reduction wave is observed at −0.40 V/Ag-AgCl with an intensity that depends on the oxygen concentration. The formation of a CoPc-O2 grafted species in the presence of oxygen was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy.

Abstract: Thin films of Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 show ferrimagnetism with a transition temperature at around 360 K but suffer from large charge conduction. Substituting Fe2+ with non-magnetic Mg2+ ions reduces the charge conduction but also lowers the magnetic transition temperature. Doping Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 thin films with magnetic Co2+ ions leads to a similar reduction in the charge conduction, which is significant by two orders of magnitude, and, on the other hand, does not lead to any modification of the ferrimagnetic transition. The remnant magnetization of the leakage currents free Co-doped Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 thin films is of 53 emu cm−3 at 300 K. These films, therefore, are promising materials with potential uses in magnetoelectric and multiferroic devices.

26. Influence of the Carbo-Chromization Process on the Microstructural, Hardness, and Corrosion Properties of 316L Sintered Stainless Steel

Abstract: We report on the changes on the microstructural, hardness, and corrosion properties induced by carbo-chromization of 316L stainless steel prepared by Spark Plasma Sintering technique. The thermo-chemical treatments have been performed using pack cementation. The carburizing and chromization were carried out between 1153 K (880 A degrees C)/4 h to 1253 K (980 A degrees C)/12 h and 1223 K (950 A degrees C)/6 h to 1273 K (1000 A degrees C)/12 h in a solid powder mixture of charcoal/BaCO3 and ferrochromium/alumina/NH4Cl, respectively. The obtained layers were investigated using X-ray and electron diffraction, optical and scanning electron microscopies, Vickers micro-hardness, and potentiodynamic measurements. The thickness of the carbo-chromized layer ranges between 300 and 500 mu m. Besides the host gamma-phase, the layers are mainly constituted of carbides (Fe7C3, Cr23C6, Cr7C3, and Fe3C) and traces of alpha'-martensite. The average hardness values decrease smoothly from 650 HV at the sample surface down to 200 HV at the center of the sample. The potentiodynamic tests revealed that the carbo-chromized samples have smaller corrosion resistance with respect to the untreated material. For strong chromization regimes, the corrosion rate is increased by a factor of four with respect to that of the untreated material, while the micro-hardness of the layer is three times larger. Such materials are suited to be used in environments where good corrosion resistance and wear properties are required.

Abstract: The syntheses and characterization of four new hybrid coordination networks based on lanthanide ions (Ln = Nd, Sm) and 1,3-carboxymethylimidazolium (L) salt in the presence of oxalic acid (H2ox) are reported. The influence of the synthesis parameters, such as the nature of the lanthanide ion (Nd3+ or Sm3+), the nature of the imidazolium source (chloride [H2L][Cl] or zwitterionic [HL] form) and the presence or not of oxalic acid (H2ox), is discussed. In the presence of oxalic acid, the samarium salt gives only one compound [Sm(L)(ox)(H2O)]·H2O, whatever the nature of the imidazolium ligand, while the neodymium salt leads to three different compounds, [Nd(L)(ox)(H2O)]·H2O, [Nd(L)(ox)0.5(H2O)2][Cl] or [Nd2(L)2(ox)(NO3)(H2O)3][NO3], depending on the imidazolium ligand. In the absence of oxalic acid, gels are obtained, except for the reaction between the neodymium salt and [H2L][Cl], which leads to [Nd(L)(ox)(H2O)]·H2O. All compounds crystallized and their structures were determined by single crystal diffraction. The description of these new phases was consistently supported by ancillary techniques, such as powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses and UV-visible-near infrared spectroscopy. The luminescent and magnetic properties of the three pure compounds [Sm(L)(ox)(H2O)]·H2O, [Nd(L)(ox)(H2O)]·H2O and [Nd2(L)2(ox)(NO3)(H2O)3][NO3] were also studied.

28. Formation of microcrystalline silicon layer for thin films silicon solar cells on aluminium substrates

Abstract: We investigated the formation of microcrystalline silicon (μc-Si:H) epitaxially grown on the polysilicon seed layer on the aluminium(Al) substrate using Electron cyclotron resonance plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition method (ECR-PECVD). The μc-Si:H film serves as an active intrinsic absorber layer for a PIN configuration solar cell. A seed polysilicon (P+) layer was created by depositing amorphous silicon by ECR-PECVD method (using SiH 4 /Ar gases) directly on Al substrate followed by thermal annealing at 550°C resulting in a layer exchange. The μc-Si:H films was then deposited using a SiH 4 /H 2 gas mix employing the same reactor. The optimization of deposition parameters was carried out on mono crystalline-Si wafers. The parameters which allowed to reaching the highest crystalline fraction of ∼ 65% are obtained for SiH 4 =4 sccm, H 2 =40 sccm and a deposition temperature of 480°C. The Raman spectroscopy was carried out on the deposited films to determine the crystalline fraction while the spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements were applied to get an insight on the optical constants of the deposited layers as well as on their thickness. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were taken to identify the crystalline phase of the deposited film and surface morphologies of films were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

Abstract: Two dimensional (2D) nanoparticles (NP) assemblies have become very attractive due to their original collective properties, which can be modulated as a function of the nanostructure. Beyond precise control on nanostructure and easy way to perform, fast assembling processes are highly desirable to develop efficient and popular strategies to prepare systems with tunable collective properties. In this article, we report on the highly efficient and fast 2D assembling of iron oxide nanoparticles on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of organic molecules by the microwave (MW)-assisted copper(I) catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) click reaction. Microwave irradiation favors a dramatic enhancement of the assembling reaction, which was completed with maximum density in NPs within one hour, much faster than the conventional CuAAC click reactions that require up to 48 h. Abstract: The cationic distribution is decisive for both the magnetic and electric properties of complex oxides. While it can be easily determined in bulk materials using classical methods such as X-ray or neutron diffraction, difficulties arise for thin films owing to the relatively small amount of material to probe. It is shown here that a full determination of the cationic site distribution in thin films is possible through an optimized processing of resonant elastic X-ray scattering experiments. The method is illustrated using gallium ferrite Ga2−xFexO3samples which have been the focus of an increasing number of studies this past decade. They indeed represent an alternative to the, to date, only room-temperature magnetoelectric compound BiFeO3. The methodology can be applied to determine the element distribution over the various crystallographic sites in any crystallized system.

Abstract: Magnetic nanoparticle arrays represent a very attractive research field because their collective properties can be efficiently modulated as a function of the structure of the assembly. Nevertheless, understanding the way dipolar interactions influence the intrinsic magnetic properties of nanoparticles still remains a great challenge. In this study, we report on the preparation of 2D assemblies of iron oxide nanoparticles as monolayers deposited onto substrates. Assemblies have been prepared by using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique and the SAM assisted assembling technique combined to CuAAC "click" reaction. These techniques afford to control the formation of well-defined monolayers of nanoparticles on large areas. The LB technique controls local ordering of nanoparticles, while adjusting the kinetics of CuAAC "click" reaction strongly affects the spatial arrangement of nanoparticles in monolayers. Fast kinetics favor disordered assemblies while slow kinetics favor the formation of chain-like structures. Such anisotropic assemblies are induced by dipolar interactions between nanoparticles as no magnetic field is applied and no solvent evaporation is performed. The collective magnetic properties of monolayers are studied as a function of average interparticle distance, local order and local shape anisotropy. We demonstrate that local control on spatial arrangement of nanoparticles in monolayers significantly strengthens dipolar interactions which enhances collective properties and results in possible super ferromagnetic order.

Abstract: International audience; A new method of acidification and subsequent functionalization of the Aurivillius-phase Bi2SrTa2O9 (BST), using microwave irradiation, was developed. This method enables to obtain hybridized phases from layered BST. Functionalization of BST by various kinds of amines and diamines can be achieved in a few hours only, compared to much longer time (over a week) using conventional heating. Good crystallinity of the compounds is kept. In addition, a microwave-assisted preintercalation strategy was developed, allowing inserting new amines (bearing cyclic or aromatic groups) between the oxide layers previously unseen in this type of compound. This work opens new perspectives for the fast and easy functionalization of layered oxides with more elaborated molecules.

Abstract: International audience; The reactivity of potassium or sodium hexacyanoferrate(II) with transition-metal layered simple hydroxides (LSHs) has been investigated to evaluate the possibility of inserting Prussian Blue analogues (PBAs) into magnetic copper(II) LSHs. This report shows how such a reaction led, unexpectedly, to the direct formation of PBA nanoparticles, the layered hydroxide serving as a metal-ion reservoir. The lamellar structure of the starting LSH collapses and copper-iron PBA nanoparticles were obtained as well-defined cubic structures stacked in layers. In addition to structural and magnetic characterization, the reaction mechanism was investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The layered copper hydroxide acetate turns out to be a smart precursor of well-shaped PBA nanoparticle layers through pseudomorphic replication. Copyright © 2016 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract: Scandium rich cobalt ferrites Co y Fe 3− x − y Sc x O 4 with y ~1 never obtained in bulk could be stabilized in pulsed laser deposited thin films. Scandium contents of up to x =1 are reached. The cell parameter increases versus x as awaited when considering the size of scandium. It is equal to 0.8620 nm for x =1, significantly higher than that of CoFe 2 O 4 (0.8396 nm). The lattice mismatch between the MgO (100) substrate and the scandium-containing spinel leads to an increased roughness. Cobalt is displaced from the octahedral site by Sc and mainly occupies the tetrahedral sites for high x values.

Abstract: International audience; Ni-Doped thin films of the room temperature ferrimagnetic oxide Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 were deposited by pulsed laser deposition and their electronic transport and structural and magnetic properties were studied. The actual insertion of the Ni cations within the Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 structure has been checked by resonant X-ray scattering. A clear extremum is noticed for all properties for the 2% Ni doping: extrema in the crystallographic cell parameters of the films, maximum in the Curie temperature, and maximum in the electric resistivity. We also observed a change of conductivity type for this dopant concentration, from n-type for Ni contents below 2% to p-type for Ni contents above 2%. We explain this behavior by the existence of oxygen vacancies in the pulsed laser deposited Ga0.6Fe1.4O3 thin films, which results in the reduction of some of the Fe3+ into Fe2+ cations, and n-type conduction via a hopping mechanism. The insertion of Ni2+ cations first deals with the presence of oxygen vacancies and reduces the number of n-type carriers in the films, in a compensation-like mechanism. When the number of introduced Ni2+ cations dominates the number of oxygen vacancies, conductivity becomes p-type and starts to increase again. We believe that the tunability of the conduction type and magnitude in thin films of a room temperature ferrimagnetic material paves the way towards new all oxide electronic devices.

Abstract: International audience; A new strategy for the functionalization of layered perovskites is presented, based on the in situ post-synthesis modification of a prefunctionalized phase by copper(I)-catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition (CuAAC). The microwave-assisted protonation and grafting of an alkyne alcohol provides the alkyne-functionalized precursor within a few hours, starting from Bi2SrTa2O9. The subsequent microwave-assisted in situ “click reaction” allows the post-synthesis modification of the precursor within ∼2 h, providing a layered perovskite functionalized by an alcohol-grafted 1,4-disubstituted-1H-1,2,3-triazole. Two compounds are described here, bearing an aliphatic and an aromatic substituent, which illustrates the general application of the method. This work opens new perspectives for the functionalization of layered perovskites, going beyond mere insertion/grafting reactions, and thus broadens the design possibilities and the range of applications of these hybrid systems.

Abstract: cited By 9; International audience; New hybrid compounds have been synthesized by functionalization of cobalt and copper layered hydroxides by salen complexes. Two kinds of compounds have been obtained from [M(SalenSO 3Na 2)] (M = Cu 2+, Ni 2+, Co 2+ and Zn 2+) and the preintercalated copper and cobalt hydroxides Cu 2(OH) 3(DS) and Co 2(OH) 3(DS 0) [SalenSO 3Na 2 = N,N'-bis(5-sulfonatosalicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane disodium salt, DS - = dodecylsulfate, DS 0 - = dodecylsulfonate]. The reaction of [M(SalenSO 3Na 2)] with layered copper hydroxide led to the anion-exchanged compounds Cu 2(OH) 3.00(CuSalenSO 3) 0.50·0.20H 2O [Cu(SalenSO 3),Cu (1)] and Cu 2(OH) 3.24(NiSalenSO 3) 0.38·2.6H 2O [Ni(SalenSO 3),Cu (2)] where M = Cu 2+ or Ni 2+. Similarly, the reaction with layered cobalt hydroxide leads to the exchanged compounds Co 2(OH) 3.18(NiSalenSO 3) 0.41·4.0H 2O [Ni(SalenSO 3),Co (6)] and Co 2(OH) 3.44(CoSalenSO 3) 0.28·3.7H 2O [Co(SalenSO 3),Co (8)] where M = Ni 2+ or Co 2+. The reaction of [M(SalenSO 3)Na 2] with layered copper hydroxide where M = Co 2+ or Zn 2+ and that of layered cobalt hydroxide where M = Cu 2+ or Zn 2+ resulted in the modification of the host structure because of concomitant partial cation exchange between the salen complex and the inorganic layers. Mixed-ion-exchanged compounds were obtained, Cu 1.16Co 0.84(OH) 3.28(CoSalenSO 3) 0.36·6.4H 2O [Co(SalenSO 3),Cu/Co (4)], Cu 0.7Zn 1.30(OH) 3.20(ZnSalenSO 3) 0.40·2.11H 2O [Zn(SalenSO 3),Cu/Zn (3)], Co 1.72Cu 0.28(OH) 3.28(CuSalenSO 3) 0.36·3.20H 2O [Cu(SalenSO 3),Co/Cu (5)] and Co 0.80Zn 1.20(OH) 3.20(ZnSalenSO) 0.40·2.25H 2O [Zn(SalenSO 3),Co/Zn (7)]. The magnetic behaviour of the compounds is drastically modified depending on the structure of the inorganic layers induced by the functionalization and partial cation exchange. The hybrid copper layered hydroxides show antiferromagnetic (for 3) or weak ferromagnetic (for 1, 2 and 4) behaviour. The cobalt analogues 5, 6 and 8 are ferrimagnets with ordering temperatures at ca. 6 K, whereas the Co/Zn heterometallic layered simple hydroxide 7 presents dominant antiferromagnetic interactions.

Abstract: In this paper, we report on the photovoltaic properties of conventional organic photovoltaic solar cells integrating a sputtered ZnO interfacial film deposited on the absorber P3HT:PCBM layer. An emphasis has been put on the influence of the annealing temperature and time for restoring and controlling the P3HT:PCBM/ZnO interface morphology, which can be damaged by the sputtering process. We show a significant improvement in the current-voltage (J-V) characteristics upon annealing up to 160 degrees C. This is evidenced by the reduction of the S-shape of these curves systematically observed for the cells integrating thick (100 nm) sputtered ZnO films. This approach was also highlighted on cells containing thinner (20 nm) ZnO films using a longer annealing process at 140 degrees C, which led to a significant improvement of the power conversion efficiency compared with the value recorded in as-prepared cells or in cells with no interfacial ZnO layer. These photovoltaic performances have been related to the change of the morphology of the absorber layer and to the vertical phase segregation of P3HT:PCBM at the interface with ZnO. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy have been performed in order to confirm this approach.

40. Influence of the thermo-chemical conditions on the carbo-chromization process of α-Fe matrices obtained by powder sintering technique

Abstract: We report on the superficial layer formation resulting from the carburization followed by chromization of α -Fe samples obtained by powder sintering technique. The carburization and chromization were carried out by thermal diffusion between 880–980 °C and 950–1050 °C in a solid powder mixture of charcoal/BaCO 3 and ferrochromium/alumina/NH 4 Cl, respectively. The obtained layers were investigated using X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, Vickers micro-hardness technique and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the layers are of micrometric size and consist mostly of chromium carbides of different phases. These phases as well as the thickness of the layers are closely related to the treatment temperature used for carburization and to the temperature and Cr initial concentration in the mixture used for chromization. For highly reactive carbo-chromization conditions (high concentration of Cr, and high carburization and chromization temperatures) the superficial layer is constituted of two chromium carbide sub-layers (Cr 3 C 2 /Cr 7 C 3 ) separated by a sharp interface. The thickness and hardness of the coating layer reached 45 μm and 2300 HV, respectively. Such coating could be used for tools that have to be abrasion and oxygen resistant at high temperatures.

Abstract: Dense monolayer assemblies of iron oxide nanoparticles have been obtained on large areas using the Langmuir–Blodgett technique. The density and ordering of the film were found to depend on the quality of the nanoparticle suspensions, which should display monodisperse nanoparticles and no free molecules. A modification of nanocrystals magnetic properties was noticed between the random configuration (powder sample) and the assembly in monolayer (Langmuir–Blodgett). The organisation in film is suggested to induce an enhancement of magnetic interactions.

Abstract: Scandium rich cobalt ferrites Co y Fe 3− x − y Sc x O 4 with y ~1 never obtained in bulk could be stabilized in pulsed laser deposited thin films. Scandium contents of up to x =1 are reached. The cell parameter increases versus x as awaited when considering the size of scandium. It is equal to 0.8620 nm for x =1, significantly higher than that of CoFe 2 O 4 (0.8396 nm). The lattice mismatch between the MgO (100) substrate and the scandium-containing spinel leads to an increased roughness. Cobalt is displaced from the octahedral site by Sc and mainly occupies the tetrahedral sites for high x values.

Abstract: The dimensionality of assembled nanoparticles plays an important role in their optical and magnetic properties, via dipolar effects and the interaction with their environment. In this work we develop a methodology for distinguishing between two (2D) and three (3D) dimensional collective interactions on the surface plasmon resonance of assembled metal nanoparticles. Towards that goal, we elaborate different sets of Au and Ag nanoparticles as suspensions, random 3D arrangements and well organized 2D arrays. Then we model their scattering cross-section using effective field methods in dimension n, including interparticle as well as particle–substrate dipolar interactions. For this modelling, two effective field medium approaches are employed, taking into account the filling factors of the assemblies. Our results are important for realizing photonic amplifier devices.

Abstract: Undoped and Mo-doped ZnO (2% Mo) films about 1 mu m thick were deposited by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering on Si(100) and glass substrates at 30 and 300 degrees C. X-ray diffraction patterns show that all films exhibit the hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure with a preferred orientation of the crystallites along the [002] direction. Plane view and cross-section transmission electron microscopy observations showed that the films present a columnar growth. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry indicates that Mo is homogeneously distributed inside the films. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy show that Mo doping leads to a reduction of the grain size and surface roughness. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, the valence of the Mo ions in the ZnO matrix is +5 and +6. Optical measurements in the UV-Visible range show a transmittance increasing from about 60 to 80% when increasing the wavelength from 400 to 800 nm. A sharp absorption onset is observed at about 375 nm corresponding to the fundamental absorption edge of ZnO at 3.26 eV. This gap value remains unchanged upon Mo doping. The Hall effect measurements carried out at room temperature show that both undoped and Mo-doped ZnO films present an n-type conduction. The 2% Mo doping increases the carrier concentration and decreases the resistivity measured in pure ZnO by about three orders of magnitude. A comparison with 2% Al-doped ZnO films grown in the same conditions underlines the important role of the preparation conditions on the transport properties of ZnO based transparent conductive oxides. Abstract: Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 thin films are deposited on Al 2 O 3 (001) substrates using a sol–gel spin-coating process. X-ray diffraction shows that the film exhibits a single phase of Ca 3 Co 4 O 9 with the (00l) planes parallel to the film surface. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility showed as expected the existence of two magnetic transitions similar to those observed in bulk samples: a ferrimagnetic and a spin-state transition around 19 and 375 K, respectively. At 5 K the magnetization curves along the c- axis of the Al 2 O 3 (001) show that the remanent magnetization and coercive field are close to those obtained for films grown by pulsed laser deposition, which evidences the interest to use such an easy technique to grow complex thin films oxides.

Abstract: The present study focused on ZnO thin films fabricated by sol-gel process and spin coated onto Si (100) and quartz substrates. ZnO thin films have a hexagonal wurtzite structure with a grain diameter about 50nm. Optical properties were determined by photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectroscopy. The absorption spectrum is dominated by a sharp excitonic peak at room and low temperatures. At room temperature, two transitions were observed by PL. One near to the prohibited energy band in ultraviolet (UV) region and the other centered at 640nm, characteristic of the electronic defects in the band-gap. The spectrum at 6K is dominated by donor-bound exciton lines and donor-acceptor pair transition. LO-phonon replica and two-electron satellite transitions are also observed. These optical characteristics are a signature of high-quality thin films.

Abstract: International audience; Films of ZnO nanostructures were prepared by a soft chemical synthesis route from ZnO crystal seeds in aqueous medium, in the presence of alkylsulfates of different chain length acting as structure-directing agents. Films of arrayed single crystal ZnO nanorods were formed with short alkyl sulfates, from C6 to C8 alkylene chains, while hybrid lamellar ZnO with a platelike morphology were obtained with C10 to C18 alkyl sulfates. In the case of the short alkyl sulfates, due to the interaction between the sulfate groups and the Zn(2+) planes of the ZnO structure, the growth along the c axis is partially inhibited and smaller aspect ratios of the nanorods are obtained than in alkylsulfate-free conditions. In the case of the hybrid lamellar ZnO structures which consist in ZnO layers intercalated with alkylsulfate bilayers, the structural characteristics depend on the alkylene chain length. Basal spacings increase linearly with the chain length, while the plate size decreases dramatically when the chain length exceeds C14. The different characteristics of these ZnO nanostructured films allow modifying their optical properties

Abstract: Assemblies of magnetic nanoparticles (NPs) are intensively studied due to their high potential applications in spintronic, magnetic and magneto-electronic. The fine control over NP density, interdistance, and spatial arrangement onto substrates is of key importance to govern the magnetic properties through dipolar interactions. In this study, magnetic iron oxide NPs have been assembled on surfaces patterned with self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of mixed organic molecules. The modification of the molar ratio between coadsorbed 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MUA) and mercaptododecane (MDD) on gold substrates is shown to control the size of NPs domains and thus to modulate the characteristic magnetic properties of the assemblies. Moreover, NPs can be used to indirectly probe the structure of SAMs in domains at the nanometer scale.
