A decline in submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) within Florida’s spring-fed thermal refuges raises questions about how these systems support winter foraging of Florida manatees Trichechus manatus latirostris. We analyzed telemetry data for 12 manatees over 7 yr to assess their use of Kings Bay, a winter refuge with diminished SAV. After accounting for the effect of water temperature, we hypothesized that the number of trips out of Kings Bay would increase and the time wintering manatees spent in Kings Bay would decrease. Trips out of and into Kings Bay were also compared to assess potential influences on exiting or entering. There were no detectable differences in the number of trips out of the bay or overall time manatees spent in Kings Bay across winters. The percentage of time water temperatures were below 20°C was the single best predictor of increased time spent in Kings Bay. Trips out of Kings Bay were more likely than trips into the bay to occur after 12:00 h and during a high but ebbing tide. Nine manatees tracked for longer than 75 d in winter spent 7 to 57% of their time in the Gulf of Mexico, and 3 of these manatees spent 7 to 65% of the winter >80 km from the mouth of Kings Bay. Results suggest the low amount of SAV in Kings Bay does not obviate its use by manatees, though there are likely tradeoffs for manatees regularly foraging elsewhere. Accounting for movements of Florida manatees through a network of habitats may improve management strategies and facilitate desirable conservation outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: To examine diet, physical activity, and body-weight changes associated with relocation from home to university. METHODS: Diet, fitness/physical activity, body-weight parameters and self-efficacy were assessed among 54 freshman women upon college entry and 5 months later. RESULTS: Although caloric intake significantly decreased, a significant increase occurred in body-weight parameters that may be attributed to significant decreases in total physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: Interventions are needed aimed at increasing physical activity; improving diet quality related to consumption of vegetables, fruits, breads and pasta, and meats; and decreasing alcohol consumption. Context: Guidelines for managing cystic fibrosis (CF) patients have been widely circulated, but little is known about the variations in practice between sites and their association with outcomes.Objective: To determine whether differences in lung health existed between groups of patients attending different CF care sites and to determine whether these differences are associated with differences in monitoring and intervention.Design: The analysis was conducted using data from the Epidemiologic Study of Cystic Fibrosis from 1995 through 1996.Setting: This was an observational database collecting prospective information from a large number of CF patients undergoing routine care in North America.Participants: Participating sites that had at least 50 CF patients who had each made at least one visit to a center during the 2-year study period were ranked on the basis of median values for FEV(1) within each of three age groups (6 to 12 years, 13 to 17 years, and >or= 18 years).Interventions: There were no prespecified interventions in this observational study.Main Outcome Measures: The frequency of patient monitoring and the use of therapeutic interventions were compared between sites in the upper and lower quartiles after stratification within the site for disease severity.Results: Within-site rankings tended to be consistent across the three age groups. Patients who were treated at higher ranking sites had more frequent monitoring of their clinical status, measurements of lung function, and cultures for respiratory pathogens. These patients also received more interventions, particularly IV antibiotics for pulmonary exacerbations.Conclusion: We found substantial differences in lung health across different CF care sites. Local and systemic reactogenic responses to Q-VAX have prevented licensing of this vaccine outside of Australia. These reactogenic responses occur in previously sensitized individuals and have not been well defined at the cellular level, in part because many studies have been done in guinea pigs that have limited molecular tools. We previously characterized a mouse model of reactogenicity where local reaction sites showed an influx of CD8+ and IFNγ-expressing IL17a+ CD4+ T cells consistent with a Th1 delayed-type hypersensitivity. In this study, we determined, using depletion and adoptive transfer experiments, that both anti- Coxiella antibodies and CD4+ T cells were essential for localized reactions at the site of vaccination. Furthermore, IFNγ depletion showed significant histological changes at the local reaction sites demonstrating the essential nature of this cytokine to reactogenicity. In addition to the cells and cytokines required for this response, we determined that whole cell vaccine (WCV) material remained at the site of vaccination for at least 26 weeks post-injection. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of these sites demonstrated intact rod-shaped bacteria at 2 weeks post-injection and partially degraded bacteria within macrophages at 26 weeks post-injection. Finally, because small cell variants (SCVs) are an environmentally stable form, we determined that local reactions were more severe when the WCV material was prepared with higher levels of SCVs compared to typical WCV or with higher levels of large cell variant (LCV). These studies support the hypothesis that antigen persistence at the site of injection contributes to this reactogenicity and that anti- Coxiella antibodies, CD4+ T cells, and IFNγ each contribute to this process.

High rates of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy continue to plague young adults in the USA with low condom use a contributing factor. To better understand condom acquisition, errors, and breakage among US cisgender college students, a survey was conducted across six structurally diverse institutions of higher education in 2019-2020 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students who had used external condoms in the last year (N = 1584) were asked about specific on- and off-campus locations of condom acquisition and practices related to condom use. Findings indicate that students most frequently acquired condoms off-campus with location differences between genders and relationship status. Condom errors were common, with no consistent patterns related to gender, but unpartnered students were more likely than those in relationships to experience condom errors. Multivariate logistic regression indicated that relationship status, applying condom on wrong side, adding condom after sex started, removing condom during sex, condom slipping off, and problems with fit were predictors for condom breakage. The study results provide guidance for healthcare and sexuality education professionals working with college students to better address the differing needs of college students regarding condom acquisition and correct condom use., (© 2024. Phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylserine are anionic phospholipids with emerging signalling roles in cells. Determination of how phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylserine change location and quantity in cells over time requires selective fluorescent sensors that can distinguish these two anionic phospholipids. However, the design of such synthetic sensors that can selectively bind and respond to a single phospholipid within the complex membrane milieu remains challenging. In this work, we present a simple and robust strategy to control the selectivity of synthetic sensors for phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylserine. By changing the coordination metal of a dipicolylamine (DPA) ligand from Zn(II) to Ni(II) on the same synthetic sensor with a peptide backbone, we achieve a complete switch in selectivity from phosphatidic acid to phosphatidylserine in model lipid membranes. Furthermore, this strategy was largely unaffected by the choice and the position of the fluorophores. We envision that this strategy will provide a platform for the rational design of targeted synthetic phospholipid sensors to probe plasma and intracellular membranes.

Background: Individual variation in movement strategies of foraging loggerhead turtles have been documented on the scale of tens to hundreds of kilometers within single ocean basins. Use of different strategies among individuals may reflect variations in resources, predation pressure or competition. It is less common for individual turtles to use different foraging strategies on the scale of kilometers within a single coastal bay. We used GPS tags capable of back-filling fine-scale locations to document movement patterns of loggerhead turtles in a coastal bay in Northwest Florida, U.S.A., Methods: Iridium-linked GPS tags were deployed on loggerhead turtles at a neritic foraging site in Northwest Florida. After filtering telemetry data, point locations were transformed to movement lines and then merged with the original point file to define travel paths and assess travel speed. Home ranges were determined using kernel density function. Diurnal behavioral shifts were examined by examining turtle movements compared to solar time., Results: Of the 11 turtles tagged, three tracked turtles remained in deep (~ 6 m) water for almost the entire tracking period, while all other turtles undertook movements from deep water locations, located along edges and channels, to shallow (~ 1-2 m) shoals at regular intervals and primarily at night. Three individuals made short-term movements into the Gulf of Mexico when water temperatures dropped, and movement speeds in the Gulf were greater than those in the bay. Turtles exhibited a novel behavior we termed drifting., Conclusions: This study highlighted the value provided to fine-scale movement studies for species such as sea turtles that surface infrequently by the ability of these GPS tags to store and re-upload data. Future use of these tags at other loggerhead foraging sites, and concurrent with diving and foraging data, would provide a powerful tool to better understand fine-scale movement patterns of sea turtles., (© 2024. We present a macrocyclic fluorescent probe for the detection of citrate. This receptor binds citrate through hydrogen-bonding interactions in aqueous solutions, and exhibits a turn-on in fluorescence in response to binding. The presence of common biologically relevant dicarboxylate species does not significantly impact the fluorescence response. We have demonstrated the utility of this probe with the staining of murine splenocytes, and identified different basal levels of citrate present in immune cell subsets via flow cytometry analysis.

In this paper we show a novel design of high Q-factor silicon nitride (SiN) 1D photonic crystal (PhC) cavities side-coupled to curved waveguides, operating with both silica and air cladding. The engineering of the etched 1D PhC cavity sidewalls angle allows for high Q-factors over a wide range of upper cladding compositions, and the achievement of the highest calculated Q-factor for non-suspended asymmetric SiN PhC structures. We show the employment of these type of SiN PhC cavities in hybrid external cavity laser (HECL) configuration, with mode-hop free single mode laser operation over a broad range of injected currents (from 25 mA to 65 mA), milliwatts of power output (up to 9 mW) and side-mode suppression ratios in the range of 40 dB. We demonstrate the operation of these devices as compact and energy efficient optical sensors that respond to refractive index changes in the surrounding medium the measurement of sodium chloride (from 0% to 25%) and sucrose (from 0% to 25%) in aqueous solution. In HECL configuration, the RI sensor exhibits a 2 orders of magnitude improvement in detection limit compared to the passive microcavity. Assessing the body condition of wild animals is necessary to monitor the health of the population and is critical to defining a framework for conservation actions. Body condition indices (BCIs) are a non-invasive and relatively simple means to assess the health of individual animals, useful for addressing a wide variety of ecological, behavioral, and management questions. The Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) is an endangered subspecies of the West Indian manatee, facing a wide variety of threats from mostly human-related origins. Our objective was to define specific BCIs for the subspecies that, coupled with additional health, genetic and demographic information, can be valuable to guide management decisions. Biometric measurements of 380 wild Antillean manatees captured in seven different locations within their range of distribution were obtained. From this information, we developed three BCIs (BCI 1  = UG/SL, BCI 2  = W/SL 3 , BCI 3  = W/(SL*UG 2 )). Linear models and two-way ANCOVA tests showed significant differences of the BCIs among sexes and locations. Although our three BCIs are suitable for Antillean manatees, BCI 1 is more practical as it does not require information about weight, which can be a metric logistically difficult to collect under particular circumstances. A novel configuration of a Fourier domain mode locked (FDML) laser based on silicon photonics platform is presented in this work that exploits the narrowband reflection spectrum of a photonic crystal (PhC) cavity resonator. Configured as a linear Fabry-Perot laser, forward biasing of a p-n junction on the PhC cavity allowed for thermal tuning of the spectrum. The modulation frequency applied to the reflector equalled the inverse roundtrip time of the long cavity resulting in stable FDML operation over the swept wavelength range. An interferometric phase measurement measured the sweeping instantaneous frequency of the laser. The silicon photonics platform has potential for very compact implementation, and the electro-optic modulation method opens the possibility of modulation speeds far beyond those of mechanical filters.

The recognition and detection of dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates is of significance for a wide variety of applications, including medical diagnosis, monitoring of health and of environmental contaminants, and in industry. Hence small molecule receptors and sensors for dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates have great potential for applications in these fields. This review outlines the challenges faced in the recognition and detection of these species, strategies that have been used to obtain effective and observable interactions with dicarboxylic acids and dicarboxylates, and progress made in this field in the period from 2014 to 2020.

Aims: To examine the association of HbA 1c and glucose levels with incident diabetic retinopathy according to black African or white European ancestry., Methods: In this retrospective cohort study of 202 500 US Veterans with diabetes (2000-2014), measures included HbA 1c , outpatient random serum/plasma glucose, and incident retinopathy [conversion from negative to ≥2 positive evaluations (ICD-9 codes), without a subsequent negative]., Results: At baseline, the study population had a mean age of 59.3 years, their mean BMI was 31.9 kg/m 2 , HbA 1c level was 57 mmol/mol (7.4%) and glucose level was 8.8 mmol/l, and 77% were of white European ancestry (white individuals) and 21% of black African ancestry (black individuals). HbA 1c was 0.3% higher in black vs white individuals (P < 0.001), adjusting for baseline age, sex, BMI, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), haemoglobin, and average systolic blood pressure and glucose. Over 11 years, incident retinopathy occurred in 9% of black and 7% of white individuals, but black individuals had higher HbA 1c , glucose, and systolic blood pressure (all P < 0.001); adjusted for these factors, incident retinopathy was reduced in black vs white individuals (P < 0.001). The population incidence of retinopathy (7%) was associated with higher mean baseline HbA 1c in individuals with black vs white ancestry [63 mmol/mol (7.9%) vs 58 mmol/mol (7.5%); P < 0.001)], but with similar baseline glucose levels (9.0 vs 9.0 mmol/l; P = 0.660, all adjusted for baseline age, sex and BMI)., Conclusions: Since retinopathy occurs at higher HbA 1c levels in black people for a given level of average plasma glucose, strategies may be needed to individualize the interpretation of HbA 1c measurements., (© 2020 Diabetes UK.)

This article serves as a Position Statement of the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (PPA), which supports safe and effective medication use in schools. PPA recommends that schools develop comprehensive medication use policies to support safe and appropriate administration of both chronic and emergency medication in schools. These policies must address issues specific to pediatric patients, including off-label and over-the-counter medication use, various pediatric dosage forms, as well as appropriate medication storage, administration, and disposal practices. There are a significant number of students on maintenance medications for chronic diseases or with diagnoses that may result in medical emergencies requiring administration of medications in school. With passing of legislation in all 50 states allowing self-administration of emergency medications for allergic reactions and asthma, the landscape of medication use in schools is changing. These changes have raised questions about the need for legislation or policy development relating to self-carrying and self-administration of medications for other disease states, undesignated stock of emergency medications, and administration of medications by non-medical personnel. Objective: In recent years college health professionals have used a variety of innovative strategies to increase availability and accessibility of condoms and safer sex products. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and efficiency of a mail-order delivery program titled the Condom Fairy. Participants: Seven hundred thirty-three students (63.4% women, 86.1% heterosexual, and 59.2% Caucasian) completed a questionnaire assessing their overall experience with the program. Methods: Participants completed a 60 item questionnaire 30 days after receiving condoms and safer sex products. Results: Overall, 46,980 condoms were distributed over a six semester period. Almost all of the participants (97.4%) reported they ordered male condoms while 58.0% ordered sexual lubricant, 11.1% female condoms, and 10.2% latex dams. Nearly than three-quarters (73.9%) of participants reported they used the condoms provided. Conclusions: Findings support the implementation of innovative mail-in condom and safer sex product programs on college campuses.
