The Kaplan–Meier method was used to calculate the cumulative survival rate, and the Log rank test was used to analyze the factors associated with the survival rate of patients.Results: This study enrolled a total of 68 patients with a mean age of 71.93 ± 7.44 years at the initiation of CAPD. The most common complication among kidney failure patients was diabetic nephropathy (39.71%). The rate of concomitant cardiovascular diseases was 58.82%. The average survival rate was 45.59 ± 4.01 months. Peritonitis was the most common factor causing death (31.25%), followed by cardiovascular diseases (28.12%) and malnutrition (25%). The factors that impacted the survival rate included concomitant cardiovascular diseases, low serum albumin (< 35 g/dL), and an indication of CAPD due to exhausted vascular access for hemodialysis at baseline. The main factor associated with a shorter survival time was concomitant cardiovascular diseases.Conclusion: It is necessary to improve the survival time beyond 5 years for elderly patients undergoing CAPD, especially for those with concomitant cardiovascular diseases. Besides the prevention of peritonitis, adequate measures to protect from cardiovascular diseases and malnutrition will reduce the mortality rate in patients on CAPD.Keywords: CAPD, elderly, Vietnamese, concomitant diseases, cardiovascular diseases

Currently, there is no such tool validated for use among pregnant women in Vietnam. This study aims to assess the validity of the Vietnamese version of the 20-item Self Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20) by evaluating its reliability, factorial structure, and performance in detecting common mental disorder (CMD) symptoms, thereby identifying the optimum cut-off score for CMD screening among pregnant women in Vietnam.Participants and Methods: A total of 210 pregnant women from four rural communes participated in a face-to-face interview using the Vietnamese version of the SRQ-20, followed by a clinical diagnostic interview based on ICD-10 diagnostic criteria of CMDs. The reliability of the SRQ-20 was assessed by calculating the scale’s Cronbach’s alpha to measure internal consistency. Factor analyses were undertaken to examine the factor structure of the instrument. The Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to assess the performance of the SRQ-20 against the clinical diagnosis and to identify the optimum cut-off score.Results: Internal consistency was good, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.87. Factor analyses resulted in a 4-factor solution. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) for detection of CMDs was 0.90. The optimum cut-off score of the SRQ-20 for detection of CMD symptoms among Vietnamese pregnant women was 5/6.Conclusion: The Vietnamese version of the SRQ-20 has the capacity to detect CMDs among pregnant women effectively and is recommended for use as a screening tool for CMDs in antenatal care settings in Vietnam.Keywords: SRQ-20, screening, common mental disorders, pregnant women, Vietnam

Save the Children's CS-18 Project implemented from 2003 to 2008 aimed to improve child health and nutritional status people in Quangtri Province through the increased use of life-saving health interventions, both behaviors and services. This baseline survey, conducted at the start of the project to provide data to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention upon its completion. A household survey was conducted of four hundred mothers of children under 2 years of age. Logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between maternal care behaviours and child health, controlling for confounding variables. In-depth interviews with 27 mothers and 4 focus group discussions with 38 mothers were also conducted. The rate of childhood malnutrition was 40.5%. The percentage of mothers that gave birth at home was 56.5%, and only 35.4% of these used a clean home delivery kit. Health staff only attended approximately 17.7% deliveries. Few mothers and newborns (23.8%) were checked after delivery. About half the mothers 54% did not feed their child colostrum, and most mothers (81.6%) stopped breastfeeding before 18 months. 58.8% of the children were sick within a month of birth. Child malnutrition was associated with child sex, age, birth weight, ethnicity, and socio-economic status (P < .001). Low rates of safe delivery and child care practices and high rates of infant illness indicate a need for improved service provision and education. Health facilities should be staffed continuously, promote village health workers in villages. Health staff should carry out a health communication campaign about maternal and child health. Family members, especially husbands, should be encouraged to take care of recent mothers during pregnancy and delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Insulin Receptor Substrate 2 (IRS2) is a signaling adaptor protein for the insulin (IR) and Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1R) receptors. In breast cancer, IRS2 contributes to both the initiation of primary tumor growth and the establishment of secondary metastases through regulation of cancer stem cell (CSC) function and invasion. However, how IRS2 mediates its diverse functions is not well understood. We used CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing to modify endogenous IRS2 to study the expression, localization, and function of this adaptor protein. A cassette containing an auxin-inducible degradation (AID) sequence, 3x-FLAG tag, and mNeon-green was introduced at the N-terminus of the IRS2 protein to provide rapid and reversible control of IRS2 protein degradation and analysis of endogenous IRS2 expression and localization. Live fluorescence imaging of these cells revealed that IRS2 shuttles between the cytoplasm and nucleus in response to growth regulatory signals in a PI3K-dependent manner. Inhibition of nuclear export or deletion of a putative nuclear export sequence in the C-terminal tail promotes nuclear retention of IRS2, implicating nuclear export in the mechanism by which IRS2 intracellular localization is regulated. Moreover, the acute induction of IRS2 degradation reduces tumor cell invasion, demonstrating the potential for therapeutic targeting of this adaptor protein. Climate change and increasing urbanization are two primary factors responsible for the increased risk of serious flooding around the world. The prediction and monitoring of the effects of land use/land cover (LULC) and climate change on flood risk are critical steps in the development of appropriate strategies to reduce potential damage. This study aimed to develop a new approach by combining machine learning (namely the XGBoost, CatBoost, LightGBM, and ExtraTree models) and hydraulic modeling to predict the effects of climate change and LULC change on land that is at risk of flooding. For the years 2005, 2020, 2035, and 2050, machine learning was used to model and predict flood susceptibility under different scenarios of LULC, while hydraulic modeling was used to model and predict flood depth and flood velocity, based on the RCP 8.5 climate change scenario. The two elements were used to build a flood risk assessment, integrating socioeconomic data such as LULC, population density, poverty rate, number of women, number of schools, and cultivated area. Flood risk was then computed, using the analytical hierarchy process, by combining flood hazard, exposure, and vulnerability. The results showed that the area at high and very high flood risk increased rapidly, as did the areas of high/very high exposure, and high/very high vulnerability. They also showed how flood risk had increased rapidly from 2005 to 2020 and would continue to do so in 2035 and 2050, due to the dynamics of climate change and LULC change, population growth, the number of women, and the number of schools - particularly in the flood zone. The results highlight the relationships between flood risk and environmental and socio-economic changes and suggest that flood risk management strategies should also be integrated in future analyses. Floods are arguably the most impactful of natural hazards. The increasing magnitude of their effects on the environment, human life, and economic activities calls for improved management of water resources. Flood susceptibility modeling has been used around the world to reduce the damage caused by flooding, although the extrapolation problem still presents a significant challenge. This study develops a machine learning (ML) model utilizing deep neural network (DNN) and optimization algorithms, namely earthworm optimization algorithm (EOA), wildebeest herd optimization (WHO), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), satin bowerbird optimizer (SBO), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO), to solve the extrapolation problem in the construction of flood susceptibility models. Quang Nam Province was chosen as a case study as it is subject to the significant impact of intense flooding, and Nghe An Province was selected as the region for extrapolation of the flood susceptibility model. Root mean square error (RMSE), receiver operating characteristic (ROC), the area under the ROC curve (AUC), and accuracy (ACC) were applied to assess and compare the fit of each of the models. The results indicated that the models in this study are a good fit in establishing flood susceptibility maps, all with AUC > 0.9. The deep neural network (DNN)-BBO model enjoyed the best results (AUC = 0.99), followed by DNN-WHO (AUC = 0.99), DNN-SBO (AUC = 0.98), DNN-EOA (AUC = 0.96), DNN-GOA (AUC = 0.95), and finally, DNN-PSO (AUC = 0.92). In addition, the models successfully solved the extrapolation problem. These new models can modify their behavior to evaluate flood susceptibility in different regions of the world. The models in this study distribute a first point of reference for debate on the solution to the extrapolation problem, which can support urban planners and other decision-makers in other coastal regions in Vietnam and other countries., (© 2024. Background: Pertussis is a highly contagious and dangerous respiratory disease that threatens children's health in many countries, including Vietnam, despite vaccine coverage. From 2015 to 2018, Vietnam experienced an increasing number of pertussis patients. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the trend and examine the seasonal variations of pertussis in North Vietnam., Methods: Data were collected from medical records of all under-5-year-old inpatients admitted to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam (VNCH) 2015-2018. A descriptive analysis was performed to describe the distribution of incident cases by year and season. Linear multivariable regression was conducted to investigate the association between the incidence of cases and seasonality adjusted by age and vaccination status., Results: We identified 1063 laboratory-confirmed patients during 2015-2018, including 247 (23.2%) severe patients. The number of pertussis patients admitted to VNCH per 1000 hospitalizations was 3.2 in 2015, compared to 1.9, 3.1, and 2.1 in 2016, 2017, and 2018, respectively. Outbreaks occurred biennially; however, there was no significant difference in the number of severe patients over this period. Most cases occurred in the hot season (509 patients, or nearly half of the study population). With the adjustment of the vaccination rate and average age, the risk of pertussis-associated hospitalization in the mild season and the hot season was 21% (95% CI [0.12; 0.3]) and 15% (95% CI [0.05; 0.25]) higher than that in the warm season, respectively. The rate of hospitalizations was high in the mild season (28.9%) and the warm season (30.8%), nearly twice as much as that in the hot season; nevertheless, the death rate was only striking high in the mild season, about 5-6 times as much as those in the other seasons., Conclusion: The pertussis incidence in Northern Vietnam varied between seasons, peaking in the hot season (April-July). However, severe patients and deaths increased in the mild season (December-March). Interventions, for example, communication activities on pertussis and vaccination, are of immense importance in lowering the prevalence of pertussis. Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is a pernicious disease characterized by an immunosuppressive milieu that is unresponsive to current immunotherapies. Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) is a natural anti-inflammatory cytokine; however, its contribution to cancer pathogenesis and immunosuppression remains elusive. In this research, we investigated the role and mechanism of IL-1Ra in malignant progression of PDA., Results: Through analyzing clinical dataset and examining the pathological tumor tissues and serum samples, we have demonstrated that IL-1Ra expression is elevated in human PDA and positively associated with malignant progression of PDA. To study the biological function of IL-1Ra in tumors, we generated a set of mouse pancreatic cancer cell lines with a knockout (KO) of the Il1rn gene, encoding IL-1Ra, and compared the tumor growth rates in immune-competent and immune-deficient mice. We found that the Il1rn KO cells exhibited greater tumor inhibition in immune-competent mice, highlighting the crucial role of a functional immune system in Il1rn KO-mediated anti-tumor response. Consistently, we found an increase in CD8 + T cells and a decrease in CD11b + Ly6G - immunosuppressive mononuclear population in the tumor microenvironment of Il1rn KO-derived tumors. To monitor the inhibitory effects of IL-1Ra on immune cells, we utilized a luciferase-based reporter CD4 + T cell line and splenocytes, which were derived from transgenic mice expressing ovalbumin-specific T cell receptors in CD8 + T cells, and mice immunized with ovalbumin. We showed that IL-1Ra suppressed T cell receptor signaling and inhibited antigen-specific interferon-γ (IFN-γ) secretion and cytolytic activity in splenocytes., Conclusions: Our findings illustrate the immunosuppressive properties of the natural anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-1Ra, and provide a rationale for considering IL-1Ra-targeted therapies in the treatment of PDA., (© 2023. Soil salinization is considered one of the disasters that have significant effects on agricultural activities in many parts of the world, particularly in the context of climate change and sea level rise. This problem has become increasingly essential and severe in the Mekong River Delta of Vietnam. Therefore, soil salinity monitoring and assessment are critical to building appropriate strategies to develop agricultural activities. This study aims to develop a low-cost method based on machine learning and remote sensing to map soil salinity in Ben Tre province, which is located in Vietnam's Mekong River Delta. This objective was achieved by using six machine learning algorithms, including Xgboost (XGR), sparrow search algorithm (SSA), bird swarm algorithm (BSA), moth search algorithm (MSA), Harris hawk optimization (HHO), grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA), particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), and 43 factors extracted from remote sensing images. Various indices were used, namely, root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) to estimate the efficiency of the prediction models. The results show that six optimization algorithms successfully improved XGR model performance with an R 2 value of more than 0.98. Among the proposed models, the XGR-HHO model was better than the other models with a value of R 2 of 0.99 and a value of RMSE of 0.051, by XGR-GOA (R 2 = 0.931, RMSE = 0.055), XGR-MSA (R 2 = 0.928, RMSE = 0.06), XGR-BSA (R 2 = 0.926, RMSE = 0.062), XGR-SSA (R 2 = 0.917, 0.07), XGR-PSO (R 2 = 0.916, RMSE = 0.08), XGR (R 2 = 0.867, RMSE = 0.1), CatBoost (R 2 = 0.78, RMSE = 0.12), and RF (R 2 = 0.75, RMSE = 0.19), respectively. These proposed models have surpassed the reference models (CatBoost and random forest). The results indicated that the soils in the eastern areas of Ben Tre province are more saline than in the western areas. The results of this study highlighted the effectiveness of using hybrid machine learning and remote sensing in soil salinity monitoring. The length of global coastline is about 356 thousand kilometers with various dynamic natural and anthropogenic. Although the number of studies on coastal landscape categorization has been increasing, it is still difficult to distinguish precisely them because the used methods commonly are traditional qualitative ones. With the leverage of remote sensing data and GIS tools, it helps categorize and identify a variety of features on land and water based on multi-source data. The aim of study is using different natural - social profile data obtained from ALOS, NOAA, and multi-temporal Landsat satellite images as input data of the convolutional-neural-network (CvNet) models for coastal landscape classification. Studies used 900 cut-line samples which represent coastal landscapes in Vietnam for training and optimizing CvNet models. As a result, nine coastal landscapes were identified including: deltas, alluvial, mature and young sand dunes, cliff, lagoon, tectonic, karst, and transitional landscapes. Three CvNet models using three different optimizer types classified the landscapes of other 1150 cut-lines in Vietnam with the accuracies about 98% and low loss function value. Excepting dalmatian, karst and delta coastal landscapes, five others distribute heterogeneous along the coasts in Vietnam. Background: MSCs are known to secrete abundant CCL2, which plays a crucial role in recruiting TAMs, promoting tumor progression. It is important to know whether disrupting MSC-derived CCL2 affects tumor growth., Methods: Murine bone marrow-derived MSCs were characterized by their surface markers and differentiation abilities. Proliferation and migration assays were performed in order to evaluate the functions of MSCs on cancer cells. CCL2 expression in MSCs was reduced by small interfering RNA (siRNA) or completely disrupted by CRISPR/Cas9 knockout (KO) approaches. An immune-competent syngeneic murine model of prostate cancer was applied in order to assess the role of tumor cell- and MSC-derived CCL2. The tumor microenvironment was analyzed to monitor the immune profile., Results: We confirmed that tumor cell-derived CCL2 was crucial for tumor growth and MSCs migration. CCL2 KO MSCs inhibited the migration of the monocyte/macrophage but not the proliferation of tumor cells in vitro. However, the mice co-injected with tumor cells and CCL2 KO MSCs exhibited anti-tumor effects when compared with those given tumor cell alone and with control MSCs, partly due to increased infiltration of CD45 + CD11b + Ly6G - mononuclear myeloid cells., Conclusions: Disruption of MSC-derived CCL2 enhances anti-tumor functions in an immune-competent syngeneic mouse model for prostate cancer.

Purpose: Most breast cancers are hormone-receptor-positive, and thus the first-line therapy for them is an anti-estrogen medication such as tamoxifen. If metastasis occurs or resistance to tamoxifen develops, the 5-year survival rates for breast cancer patients significantly decrease. Hence, a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms that contribute to breast cancer aggressiveness is of great importance. ERα36 is an estrogen receptor variant that is known to be upregulated in breast cancer patients receiving tamoxifen treatment or in triple-negative breast cancer cells. However, the specific molecular mechanism underlying ERα36-induced tamoxifen-resistance is not yet fully understood. Methods: ERα36-overexpressing MCF-7 cells were constructed by either plasmid transfection using ERα36 vector or retroviral infection using ERα36-V5-His vector. Target-gene expression was assessed by Western blot analysis and real-time PCR, and YAP activation was evaluated by luciferase assays and immunofluorescence. Cell proliferation and formation of three-dimensional spheroids were evaluated using the IncuCyte S3 Live Cell Analysis System. Results: We found that the expression patterns of Hippo signaling-related genes were significantly changed in ERα36-overexpressing MCF-7 cells compared to MCF-7 cells, which were also similarly observed in tamoxifen-resistant MCF-7 cells. Specifically, the protein expression level and activity of YAP, the core downstream protein of the Hippo pathway, were significantly increased in ERα36-overexpressing MCF-7 cells compared with MCF-7 cells. The aggressive phenotypes acquired by ERα36 overexpression in MCF-7 cells were destroyed by YAP knockout. On this basis, we propose that ERα36 regulates YAP activity by a new mechanism involving Src kinase. This study investigates the strength and permeability properties of pervious concrete-containing coal bottom ash (CBA) aggregates. Two pervious concrete mixtures were fabricated with different aggregate size distributions. One mixture contained CBA aggregates with a single-type distribution and the other mixture contained CBA aggregates with a hybrid-type distribution. The test parameters of the CBA pervious concrete included the water/cement (W/C) ratio and compaction level to investigate their effects on the properties. W/C ratios of 0.25, 0.30, and 0.35 were considered for the mixture, and compaction levels of 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa were applied to fabricate the pervious specimen. The increase in the W/C ratio reduced the strength by approximately 20% to 30% of the CBA pervious concrete. The increase in the compaction level reduced the permeability by approximately four to five times but significantly increased the strength of the CBA pervious concrete. The test results indicate that the use of single-type CBA or hybrid CBA aggregates with different size distributions affected the properties of the pervious concrete. The strength of specimens, including hybrid CBA aggregates, was 30% to 45% greater than that of the specimens containing single-type CBA aggregates. Meanwhile, the use of hybrid CBA aggregates reduced the permeability of the CBA pervious concrete by approximately 20% to 35%. Finally, relationships between the strength properties, permeability characteristics and total void ratios of the CBA pervious concrete specimens are suggested based on the test results.

The Anaphase-Promoting Complex/Cyclosome (APC/C), an E3 ubiquitin ligase, and two co-activators, Cdc20 and Cdh1, enable the ubiquitin-dependent proteasomal degradation of various critical cell cycle regulators and govern cell division in a timely and precise manner. Dysregulated cell cycle events cause uncontrolled cell proliferation, leading to tumorigenesis. Studies have shown that Cdh1 has tumor suppressive activities while Cdc20 has an oncogenic property, suggesting that Cdc20 is an emerging therapeutic target for cancer treatment. Therefore, in this review, we discussed recent findings about the essential roles of APC/C-Cdc20 in cell cycle regulation. Furthermore, we briefly summarized that the regulation of Cdc20 expression levels is strictly controlled to order cell cycle events appropriately. Introduction: Contemporary data on the epidemiology of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in Vietnam are extremely limited., Methods: We established population-based registries of residents from 2 provinces in a northern urban (Hai Phong), and a central rural (Thanh Hoa), province of Vietnam hospitalized with a validated first AMI in 2018. We described patient characteristics, in-hospital management and clinical complications, and estimated incidence rates of AMI in these two registries., Results: A total of 785 patients (mean age = 71.2 years, 64.7% men) were admitted to the two hospitals with a validated first AMI. Approximately 64% of the AMI cases were ST-segment-elevation AMI. Patients from Thanh Hoa compared with Hai Phong were more likely to delay seeking acute hospital care. The incidence rates (per 100,000 population) of initial AMI in Thanh Hoa and Hai Phong were 16 and 30, respectively. Most patients were treated with aspirin (Thanh Hoa: 96%; Hai Phong: 90%) and statins (both provinces: 91%) during their hospitalization. A greater proportion of patients in Hai Phong (69%) underwent percutaneous revascularization than those in Thanh Hoa (58%). The most common in-hospital complications were heart failure (both provinces:12%), cardiogenic shock (Thanh Hoa: 10%; Hai phong: 7%); and cardiac arrest (both provinces: 9%). The in-hospital case-fatality rates for patients from Thanh Hoa and Hai Phong were 6.8% and 3.8%, respectively., Conclusions: The incidence and hospital case-fatality rates of AMI were low in two Vietnamese provinces. Porous concrete has recently gained increasing attention in the construction industry. To improve the properties of porous concrete, coal bottom ash (CBA) was used as the aggregate in the concrete mixtures studied herein. Hybrid CBA aggregates, including a 20% proportion of particles with sizes of 1.2~2.5 mm and an 80% proportion of particles with sizes of 2.5~5.0 mm, were used in the mixtures. Various water/cement ratios ranging from 0.25 to 0.35 were used in the mixtures. The effects of compaction at 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa on the properties of the porous concrete were also examined. The increase in the water/cement ratio reduced the unit weight and thermal conductivity while increasing the porosity of the porous concrete. Although the compaction had a significant impact on the other properties of the porous concrete, the thermal property was not significantly influenced. By using CBA in porous concrete, the mechanical and thermal properties of the concrete were significantly improved. Finally, the relationships between the thermal conductivity and other properties of the porous concrete were investigated.

Nationwide dental health surveys are crucial for providing essential information on dental health and dental condition-related problems in the community. However, the relationship between periodontal conditions and sociodemographic data has not been well investigated in Vietnam. With data from the National Oral Health Survey in 2019, we performed several machine learning methods on this dataset to investigate the impacts of sociodemographic features on gingival bleeding, periodontal pockets, and Community Periodontal Index. From the experiments, LightGBM produced a maximum AUC (area under the curve) value of 0.744. The other models in descending order were logistic regression (0.705), logiboost (0.704), and random forest (0.684). All methods resulted in significantly high overall accuracies, all exceeding 90%. The results show that the gradient boosting model can predict well the relationship between periodontal conditions and sociodemographic data. The investigated model also reveals that the geographic region has the most significant influence on dental health, while the consumption of sweet foods/drinks is the second most crucial. These findings advocate for a region-specific approach for the dental care program and the implementation of a sugar-risk food reduction program.

This work was designed to evaluate the interlayer strength of 3D-printed mortar with postinstalled interlayer reinforcement. Two methods of postinstalled interlayer reinforcement were considered according to the amount of overlapping. The first method did not include overlapping of the interlayer reinforcement, while the second method included overlap lengths of 20 and 40 mm. Additionally, two different curing conditions were considered: air-curing conditions and water-curing conditions. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths of 3D-printed mortar specimens with different reinforcement methods and curing conditions were investigated under three loading directions. The three loading directions were defined based on the three planes of the printed specimens. The compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural tensile strengths were dependent on the loading directions. In particular, the splitting and flexural tensile strengths decreased considerably when tensile stresses acted on the interlayers of the 3D-printed mortar specimens. However, when longitudinal interlayer reinforcement penetrated the printed layers, the flexural tensile strength or interlayer bonding strength of the printed specimens increased significantly at the interlayers. In addition, mortar specimens reinforced with overlap lengths of 20 and 40 mm were investigated in this study. The flexural tensile strength or interlayer bonding strength of 3D-printed mortar decreased after treatment under air-curing conditions because the interlayers of the printed mortar formed more pores under these conditions and were more vulnerable under loading. Finally, the findings of this study suggested that interlayer reinforcement is a potential method for improving the interlayer bonding strength of 3D-printed mortar.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of curing and drying conditions on the strength properties of concrete containing coal bottom ash (CBA) and fly ash as substitutes for fine aggregates and cement, respectively. The strength properties of the concrete including CBA and fly ash were evaluated under two different curing and drying conditions: saturated surface-dry (SSD) conditions and oven-dried conditions at curing ages of 28 and 91 days. The natural fine aggregates of the mixtures were replaced by CBA fine aggregates at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by volume. In addition, the cement in the mixtures was partly replaced with fly ash at 20% and 40%. The experimental program included the measurement of the unit weight, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, and ultrasonic pulse velocity of the concrete. The test results showed that the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and flexural strength decreased as the CBA content increased under both SSD and oven-dried conditions. The curing and drying conditions of the concrete with CBA and fly ash considerably influenced the reduction in the compressive, splitting, and flexural tensile strengths of the concrete. Additionally, the experimental results showed that fly ash insignificantly contributed to the reduction in the strength properties under both SSD and oven-dried conditions. Finally, the relationships between ultrasonic pulse velocity and the splitting tensile strength, flexural tensile strength, and compressive strength were investigated.

The ubiquitin system, present in all eukaryotes, contributes to regulating multiple types of cellular protein processes such as cell signaling, cell cycle, and receptor trafficking, and it affects the immune response. In most types of cancer, unusual events in ubiquitin-mediated signaling pathway modulation can lead to a variety of clinical outcomes, including tumor formation and metastasis. Similarly, ubiquitination acts as a core component, which contributes to the alteration of cell signaling activity, dictating biosignal turnover and protein fates. As lung cancer acquires the most commonly mutated proteins, changes in the ubiquitination of the proteins contribute to the development of lung cancer. Various inhibitors targeting the ubiquitin system have been developed for clinical applications in lung cancer treatment. In this review, we summarize the current research advances in therapeutics for lung cancer by targeting the ubiquitin system.

Among crop fruit trees, the apricot (Prunus armeniaca) provides an excellent model to study divergence and adaptation processes. Here, we obtain nearly 600 Armeniaca apricot genomes and four high-quality assemblies anchored on genetic maps. Chinese and European apricots form two differentiated gene pools with high genetic diversity, resulting from independent domestication events from distinct wild Central Asian populations, and with subsequent gene flow. A relatively low proportion of the genome is affected by selection. Different genomic regions show footprints of selection in European and Chinese cultivated apricots, despite convergent phenotypic traits, with predicted functions in both groups involved in the perennial life cycle, fruit quality and disease resistance. Selection footprints appear more abundant in European apricots, with a hotspot on chromosome 4, while admixture is more pervasive in Chinese cultivated apricots. Our study provides clues to the biology of selected traits and targets for fruit tree research and breeding.

The ubiquitin-mediated degradation system is responsible for controlling various tumor-promoting processes, including DNA repair, cell cycle arrest, cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, migration and invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance. The conjugation of ubiquitin to a target protein is mediated sequentially by the E1 (activating)‒E2 (conjugating)‒E3 (ligating) enzyme cascade. Thus, E2 enzymes act as the central players in the ubiquitination system, modulating various pathophysiological processes in the tumor microenvironment. In this review, we summarize the types and functions of E2s in various types of cancer and discuss the possibility of E2s as targets of anticancer therapeutic strategies.

Objective: To foster a national dialogue on addressing dementia as an emerging public health problem and formulating a strategy for developing Vietnam's national dementia plan., Methods: In September 2018, the Vietnamese National Geriatric Hospital supported by University staff in Australia and the United States organised the first Vietnam National Dementia Conference in Hanoi., Results: Over 270 Vietnamese dementia stakeholders and international dementia experts participated in the conference. The participants agreed dementia was a public health priority in Vietnam and identified the need for the development of Vietnam's national dementia plan. Policymakers supported positioning dementia as a priority in the national health agenda. Research institutions created collaboration to generate scientific information for policymaking process. Background: Advances in earth observation and machine learning techniques have created new options for forest monitoring, primarily because of the various possibilities that they provide for classifying forest cover and estimating aboveground biomass (AGB)., Methods: This study aimed to introduce a novel model that incorporates the atom search algorithm (ASO) and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) into mangrove forest classification and AGB estimation. The Ca Mau coastal area was selected as a case study since it has been considered the most preserved mangrove forest area in Vietnam and is being investigated for the impacts of land-use change on forest quality. The model was trained and validated with a set of Sentinel-1A imagery with VH and VV polarizations, and multispectral information from the SPOT image. In addition, feature selection was also carried out to choose the optimal combination of predictor variables. The model performance was benchmarked against conventional methods, such as support vector regression, multilayer perceptron, random subspace, and random forest, by using statistical indicators, namely, root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and coefficient of determination (R2)., Results: The results showed that all three indicators of the proposed model were statistically better than those from the benchmarked methods. Specifically, the hybrid model ended up at RMSE = 70.882, MAE = 55.458, R2 = 0.577 for AGB estimation., Conclusion: From the experiments, such hybrid integration can be recommended for use as an alternative solution for biomass estimation. Recently, many methods have been developed to efficiently eliminate oil spills due to its long-term harmful effects on marine life and human health. Expanded graphite (EG) has been considered as an excellent platform to remove contaminated oil from aqueous solution through a facile adsorption route. As an innovative approach, the decoration of magnetic components, namely, MnFe 2 O 4 , into graphite layers was taken into account for facilitating phase separation under magnetic field which resulted into an easy collection of the used adsorbents in a large scale. The expanded graphite/manganese ferrite composites were prepared from Vietnamese graphite flakes via a two-stage process. Characterization was performed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDS), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption analysis. The adsorption behavior of EG-MnFe 2 O 4 for widespread used heavy oils, including diesel oil and crude oil, was investigated under the effects of adsorption conditions, i.e., contact time, loaded oil dosage, and salinity of mixing oil and water. The obtained results showed successful incorporation of MnFe 2 O 4 into graphite sheets and no considerable change on the worm-like structure of EG. The results also showed that incorporated manganese ferrites enhanced the magnetism EG up to 16 emu/g, which made the recovery of used adsorbent conveniently. The EG-MnFe 2 O 4 adsorbents exhibited the strong adsorption ability toward diesel oil (32.20 ± 0.46 g DO/g EG) and crude oil (33.07 ± 0.33 g CO/g EG). In brief, EG-MnFe 2 O 4 material provides a potential and promising platform with high performance for oil spill removal.

Background: Internationally, mental health and social care systems face significant challenges when implementing policy to prevent and respond to domestic violence (DV). This paper reviews the policy process pertaining to the national law on domestic violence prevention and control (DVPC) within the health system in Vietnam from 2003 to 2018, and critically examines the policy-making process and content, the involvement of key actors and the barriers to implementation within the health system., Methods: 63 policy documents, 36 key informant interviews and 4 focus group discussions were conducted in Hanoi city, Bac Giang and Hai Duong provinces. The policy triangle framework was used to analyse the development and implementation process of the Law on DVPC., Results: The Vietnamese government developed the law on DVPC in response to the Millennium Development Goals reporting requirements. The development was a top-down process directed by state bodies, but it was the first time that international agencies and civil society groups had been involved in the health policy development process. The major themes that emerged in the analysis include: policy content, policymaking and implementation processes, the nature of actors' involvement, contexts, and mechanisms for policy implementation. Policy implementation was slow and delayed due to implementation being optional, decentralization, socio-cultural factors related especially to sensitivity, insufficient budgets, and insufficient cooperation between various actors within the health system and other related DV support systems., Conclusion: The initial development process for DVPC Law in Vietnam was pressured by external and internal demands, but the subsequent implementation within the health system experienced protracted delays. It is recommended that the policy be revised to emphasise a rights-based approach. IntroductionField identification of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and advanced hospital notification decreases first-medical-contact-to-balloon (FMC2B) time. A recent study in this system found that electrocardiogram (ECG) transmission following a STEMI alert was frequently unsuccessful.HypothesisInstituting weekly test ECG transmissions from paramedic units to the hospital would increase successful transmission of ECGs and decrease FMC2B and door-to-balloon (D2B) times., Methods: This was a natural experiment of consecutive patients with field-identified STEMI transported to a single percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)-capable hospital in a regional STEMI system before and after implementation of scheduled test ECG transmissions. In November 2014, paramedic units began weekly test transmissions. The mobile intensive care nurse (MICN) confirmed the transmission, or if not received, contacted the paramedic unit and the department's nurse educator to identify and resolve the problem. Per system-wide protocol, paramedics transmit all ECGs with interpretation of STEMI. Receiving hospitals submit patient data to a single registry as part of ongoing system quality improvement. The frequency of successful ECG transmission and time to intervention (FMC2B and D2B times) in the 18 months following implementation was compared to the 10 months prior. Post-implementation, the time the ECG transmission was received was also collected to determine the transmission gap time (time from ECG acquisition to ECG transmission received) and the advanced notification time (time from ECG transmission received to patient arrival)., Results: There were 388 patients with field ECG interpretations of STEMI, 131 pre-intervention and 257 post-intervention. The frequency of successful transmission post-intervention was 73% compared to 64% prior; risk difference (RD)=9%; 95% CI, 1-18%. In the post-intervention period, the median FMC2B time was 79 minutes (inter-quartile range [IQR]=68-102) versus 86 minutes (IQR=71-108) pre-intervention (P=.3) and the median D2B time was 59 minutes (IQR=44-74) versus 60 minutes (IQR=53-88) pre-intervention (P=.2). The median transmission gap was three minutes (IQR=1-8) and median advanced notification time was 16 minutes (IQR=10-25)., Conclusion: Implementation of weekly test ECG transmissions was associated with improvement in successful real-time transmissions from field to hospital, which provided a median advanced notification time of 16 minutes, but no decrease in FMC2B or D2B times. Objectives: This paper investigates the trajectories of depression symptoms in adolescents and young adults, and explores factors associated with their depression., Method: For each respondent, three waves of data were collected in 2006, 2009 and 2013 from adolescents and young adults aged 10 to 24 years. The modified Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale was used to interview participants, while the generalised estimating equation (GEE) model was used to identify whether certain factors were associated with depression., Results: The mean depression scores in 2006, 2009 and 2013 were 29.76, 30.80 and 30.51 respectively. Compared to boys, girls reported higher initial levels of depressive symptoms. The depression score was found to be highest among adolescents aged 15 to 17 years. Depression among young people was associated with age, gender, marital status, education levels, general health and living location., Conclusion: Using longitudinal design, this research demonstrated the different trajectories of depression scores between boys and girls over time and provided evidence for interventions improving adolescent mental health in a semi-urban area of Vietnam.

The most common therapy for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer is antihormone therapy, such as tamoxifen. However, acquisition of resistance to tamoxifen in one third of patients presents a serious clinical problem. Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1) is a key oncogenic regulator of completion of G 2 -M phase of the cell cycle. We assessed Plk1 expression in five chemoresistant cancer cell types and found that Plk1 and its downstream phosphatase Cdc25c were selectively overexpressed in tamoxifen-resistant MCF-7 (TAMR-MCF-7) breast cancer cells. Real-time monitoring of cell proliferation also showed that TAMR-MCF-7 cells were more sensitive to inhibition of cell proliferation by the ATP-competitive Plk1 inhibitor BI2536 than were the parent MCF-7 cells. Moreover, BI2536 suppressed expression of epithelial-mesenchymal transition marker proteins and 3D spheroid formation in TAMR-MCF-7 cells. Using TAMR-MCF-7 cell-implanted xenograft and spleen-liver metastasis models, we showed that BI2536 inhibited tumor growth and metastasis in vivo Our results suggest that Plk1 could be a novel target for the treatment of tamoxifen-resistant breast cancer. We previously demonstrated that tamoxifen (TAM)-resistant human breast cancer (TAMR-MCF-7) cells showed increased expression of mesenchymal marker proteins compared to the parent MCF-7 cells. Notch is functionally important in the promotion of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during both development and tumor progression. Notch1 and Notch4 have been reported as prognostic markers in human breast cancer. Here, we indicated that Notch4, but not Notch1, plays a critical role in the regulation of EMT signaling in TAMR-MCF-7 cells. Notch4 suppression by either Notch inhibitors or Notch4 siRNA attenuated EMT signaling. Tyrosine-phosphorylated STAT3 protein is known as a crucial signaling molecule in the regulation of tumorigenesis and metastasis. We found that TAMR-MCF-7 cells exhibited constitutive STAT3 phosphorylation, and Notch inhibition reduced the level of activated STAT3 in TAMR-MCF-7 cells. An intrasplenic injection model of liver metastases was performed using TAMR-MCF-7 cells. Mice injected with N-[N-(3,5-Difluorophenacetyl)-l-alanyl]-S-phenylglycine t-butyl ester (DAPT, 10 mg/kg) formed smaller splenic tumors and showed a reduced micrometastatic tumor burden in their livers compared with the control group treated with vehicle. Objective: This paper examines the trends of mortality in the elderly people in Chi Linh during period 2004-2012 and identifies a number of factors related to mortality in the elderly., Design: The longitudinal study method is used. The analyzed data is extracted from database of theDemographic-Epidemiologic Surveillance System (DESS) of Chililab. The data is collected from 7 communes/town of Chi Linh district, Hai Duong province during 2004-2012 with all elderly people. Descriptive statistical analysis and survival analysis using Kaplan Meier survival estimates and Cox regression models were used. The indirect standardization was used to compare between the mortality rate of the elderly in Chi Linh and the rates of those in some reference groups., Results: Mortality rate in elderly tend to decrease over the period 2004-2012. In all the time, mortality rate in elderly men is higher than that in the elderly women. Specific mortality rates by age groups have increased in both males and females. The increase Age specific mortality rates in males is higher than females. Indirect standardized mortality data for the elderly in 2009 in Chi Linh, Vietnam, Canada, the United States of America (USA) showed that elderly mortality rate in Chililab in 2009 was lower than that in elderly of Vietnam (standardized mortality ratio-SMR of elderly in Chililab is only by 75% in comparison with elderly of Vietnam), and also lower than that in elderly people in the US, and Canada. Cox regression analysis (multivariate models) show that with every 1 year older, the risk of death in elderly men increased by 9% and 12% increase in elderly female, for both men and women general risk increased by 10% ( p < 0.05). Elderly with higher education levels, elderly with better family economic conditions; elderly living with wife/husband have lower mortality risk than the other counterparts., Conclusions: The research results suggest some recommendations: Strengthening health care programs for elderly people with low education levels, poor economic conditions, and celibacy groups (the vulnerable groups)., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest and Funding: All authors declare no conflicts of interest in this paper. Introduction: Extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) represents an emerging public health problem worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 9.7% of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) cases are defined as XDR-TB globally. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of drug resistance to second-line TB drugs among MDR-TB cases detected in the Fourth National Anti-Tuberculosis Drug Resistance Survey in Viet Nam., Methods: Eighty clusters of TB cases were selected using a probability-proportion-to-size approach. To identify MDR-TB cases, drug susceptibility testing (DST) was performed for the four major first-line TB drugs. DST of second-line drugs (ofloxacin, amikacin, kanamycin, capreomycin) was performed on isolates from MDR-TB cases to identify pre-XDR and XDR cases., Results: A total of 1629 smear-positive TB cases were eligible for culture and DST. Of those, DST results for first-line drugs were available for 1312 cases, and 91 (6.9%) had MDR-TB. Second-line DST results were available for 84 of these cases. Of those, 15 cases (17.9%) had ofloxacin resistance and 6.0% were resistant to kanamycin and capreomycin. Five MDR-TB cases (6.0%) met the criteria of XDR-TB., Conclusion: This survey provides the first estimates of the proportion of XDR-TB among MDR-TB cases in Viet Nam and provides important information for local policies regarding second-line DST. Local policies and programmes that are geared towards TB prevention, early diagnosis and treatment with effective regimens are of high importance.

Background: There is strong evidence that breastfeeding (BF) significantly benefits mothers and infants in various ways. Yet the proportion of breastfed babies in Vietnam is low and continues to decline. This study fills an important evidence gap in BF practices in Vietnam., Objective: This paper examines the trend of early initiation of BF and exclusive BF from 2000 to 2011 in Vietnam and explores the determinants at individual and contextual levels., Design: Data from three waves of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey were combined to estimate crude and adjusted trends over time for two outcomes - early initiation of BF and exclusive BF. Three-level logistic regressions were fitted to examine the impacts of both individual and contextual characteristics on early initiation of BF and exclusive BF in the 2011 data., Results: Both types of BF showed a decreasing trend over time after controlling for individual-level characteristics but this trend was more evident for early initiation of BF. Apart from child's age, individual-level characteristics were not significant predictors of the BF outcomes, but provincial characteristics had a strong association. When controlling for individual-level characteristics, mothers living in provinces with a higher percentage of mothers with more than three children were more likely to have initiated early BF (odds ratio [OR]: 1.06; confidence interval [CI]: 1.02-1.11) but less likely to exclusively breastfeed their babies (OR: 0.94; CI: 0.88-1.01). Mothers living in areas with a higher poverty rate were more likely to breastfeed exclusively (OR: 1.07; CI: 1.02-1.13), and those who delivered by Caesarean section were less likely to initiate early BF., Conclusions: Our results suggest that environmental factors are becoming more important for determining BF practices in Vietnam. Intervention programs should therefore not only consider individual factors, but should also consider the potential impact of contextual factors on BF practices.

Background: The prevalence of modern contraceptive use is an important indicator that reflects accessibility to reproductive health services. Satisfying unmet needs for family planning alone could reduce the number of maternal deaths by almost a third. This study uses multiple data sources to examine multilevel factors associated with the use of modern contraceptives among married women in Vietnam aged 15-49 years., Design: Data from different national surveys (Vietnam Population and Housing Census, Vietnam Living Standard Survey, and Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey) were linked to create a dataset including individual and contextual (provincial) variables (N=8,341). Multilevel modeling was undertaken to examine the impact of both individual and provincial characteristics on modern contraceptive use. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) are reported., Results: Individual factors significantly associated with the use of modern contraceptives were age 30-34 years (reference 15-19 years) (OR=1.63); high socioeconomic status (SES) (OR=0.8); having two living children (OR=2.4); and having a son (OR=1.4). The provincial poverty rate mediated the association between the individual's SES and the likelihood of using modern contraceptives., Conclusions: The proportion of women in Vietnam using modern contraceptive methods has remained relatively high in recent years with significant variation across Vietnam's 63 provinces. Women of lower SES are more likely to use modern contraceptive methods, especially in the poorer provinces. Achieving access to universal reproductive health is one of the Millennium Development Goals. Vietnam must continue to make progress in this area.

Lipoprotein levels are currently recognized as independent risk factors for long-term cardiovascular events after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). During the acute-phase reaction after AMI, previous studies have reported trends of decreased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), increased triglycerides, and variable high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. However, the association between LDL-C and HDL-C levels and in-hospital mortality has not been well established following AMI. The relationship between lipid levels and in-hospital all-cause mortality in 115,492 patients hospitalized for AMI (July 2002 to December 2006), registered in the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction (NRMI) 4b-5, was evaluated using multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models. Mean LDL-C was 104 ± 38, HDL-C was 41 ± 14, and triglycerides 143 ± 83 mg/dl. Compared with the lowest quartile of LDL-C (<77 mg/dl), the risk of in-hospital mortality in the second to fourth quartiles was decreased (adjusted odds ratio 0.79, 0.80, and 0.85, respectively). For HDL-C, only those in the lowest quartile (<31 mg/dl) had higher risk of in-hospital mortality (odds ratio 1.20) compared with the highest quartile (≥47 mg/dl). Results from NRMI 4b-5 suggest a lipid paradox, with lower LDL-C levels associated with increased risk of in-hospital mortality, contrary to findings outside the acute setting. Consistent with previous analyses, lowest HDL-C levels were associated with increased in-hospital mortality. In conclusion, further explorations of the relationship between very low levels of LDL-C, myocardial necrosis, and subsequent adverse cardiovascular events are warranted., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Interactions of plant retrotransposons with different steps of biotic and abiotic stress-associated signaling cascades are still poorly understood. We perform here a finely tuned comparison of four tobacco retrotransposons (Tnt1, Tnt2, Queenti, and Tto1) responses to the plant elicitor cryptogein. We demonstrate that basal transcript levels in cell suspensions and plant leaves as well as the activation during the steps of defense signaling events are specific to each retrotransposon. Using antisense NtrbohD lines, we show that NtrbohD-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) production might act as negative regulator of retrotransposon activation., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier GmbH. Patients with acute coronary syndromes have a substantial disease burden and are at continued risk of future cardiovascular events. In this setting, the relation between previous myocardial infarction (MI) and the risk of subsequent in-hospital adverse cardiovascular outcomes has not been definitively established. The data were analyzed from 427,778 hospitalized patients presenting with acute MI from July 2002 to December 2006, who were enrolled in the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction 4-5 study. Multivariate logistic regression models were developed to examine the association between a history of MI and in-hospital all-cause mortality, recurrent MI, and congestive heart failure/pulmonary edema. Covariate adjustments were made for demographic characteristics, co-morbidities, prearrival medications, and health status at presentation. Similarly, multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the length of stay. Of the 232,927 patients with acute MI included in the present study after exclusions, 24.7% reported a history of MI. In-hospital mortality was not significantly different between the patients with and without a history of MI (adjusted odds ratio 0.99, 95% confidence interval 0.95 to 1.04, p = 0.75). However, patients with a previous MI had a small increased risk of in-hospital recurrent MI (adjusted odds ratio 1.18, 95% confidence interval 1.08 to 1.29, p <0.001) and congestive heart failure/pulmonary edema (adjusted odds ratio 1.23, 95% confidence interval1.19 to 1.28, p <0.001) compared with patients with no history of MI. The Arf1 exchange factor GBF1 (Golgi Brefeldin A resistance factor 1) and its effector COPI are required for delivery of ATGL (adipose triglyceride lipase) to lipid droplets (LDs). Using yeast two hybrid, co-immunoprecipitation in mammalian cells and direct protein binding approaches, we report here that GBF1 and ATGL interact directly and in cells, through multiple contact sites on each protein. The C-terminal region of ATGL interacts with N-terminal domains of GBF1, including the catalytic Sec7 domain, but not with full-length GBF1 or its entire N-terminus. The N-terminal lipase domain of ATGL (called the patatin domain) interacts with two C-terminal domains of GBF1, HDS (Homology downstream of Sec7) 1 and HDS2. These two domains of GBF1 localize to lipid droplets when expressed alone in cells, but not to the Golgi, unlike the full-length GBF1 protein, which localizes to both. We suggest that interaction of GBF1 with ATGL may be involved in the membrane trafficking pathway mediated by GBF1, Arf1 and COPI that contributes to the localization of ATGL to lipid droplets.

Ischemic heart disease is the single greatest killer of Americans and its complications are a major cause of congestive heart failure and ventricular arrhythmias while signifiicantly contributing to increased health care costs and reduced patient quality of life. Advances in medical therapy, although signifiicant over the past decade, are still inadequate in regards to targeting the prime underlying pathology, the irreversible loss of damaged or dead cardiomyocytes. Research into the use of cell transplantation therapy to treat cardiac diseases, with the goal of improving cardiac function, shows promise. The aim of this review will be to discuss the potential therapeutic effects of myocardial stem cell and progenitor cell therapy delivered by an intracoronary route with special reference to treatment of infarcted myocardium.

Allopolyploidy is a major driving force in plant evolution and can induce rapid structural changes in the hybrid genome. As major components of plant genomes, transposable elements are involved in these changes. In a previous work, we observed turnover of retrotransposon insertions in natural allotretraploid tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). Here, we studied the early stages of allopolyploid formation by monitoring changes at retrotransposon insertion sites in the Th37 synthetic tobacco. We used sequence-specific amplification polymorphism (SSAP) to study insertion patterns of two populations of the Tnt1 retrotransposon in Th37 S4 generation plants, and characterized the nature of polymorphic insertion sites. We observed significant amplification of young Tnt1 populations. Newly transposed copies were amplified from maternal elements and were highly similar to Tnt1A tobacco copies amplified in response to microbial factors. A high proportion of paternal SSAP bands were not transmitted to the hybrid, corresponding to various rearrangements at paternal insertion sites, including indels or the complete loss of the Tnt1/flanking junction. These data indicate that major changes, such as retrotransposon amplification and molecular restructuring in or around insertion sites, occur rapidly in response to allopolyploidy.

Objectives: To report the feasibility of a collagen-mediated closure device using a modified Angio-Seal closure technique for access site management following percutaneous balloon aortic valvuloplasty (BAV)., Background: With the advent of percutaneous aortic valve replacement therapies, there has been a resurgence of interest in BAV procedures. Vascular complications, including bleeding, are a common source of morbidity post procedure as a result of the requirement for large bore femoral artery access. The use of vascular closure devices may reduce bleeding complications., Methods: We describe a new technique for vascular closure in this setting. At the conclusion of the valvuloplasty procedure, two 0.035'' wires are inserted through the femoral artery sheath. A conventional collagen-mediated closure device (8F Angio-Seal) is deployed over the first wire and along side the second wire. If immediate hemostasis is not achieved, a second device is loaded onto the second wire and deployed to achieve hemostasis., Results: Percutaneous BAV was performed in 21 patients. Hemostasis was successfully achieved in all patients with either a single 8F Angio-Seal closure device (18 patients) or after placement of a second device (three patients)., Conclusions: The modified "Double Wire" Angio-Seal technique is a feasible method for hemostasis following percutaneous BAV.

Importance of the Field: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory-immune mediated disease process. Plaque rupture is responsible for the clinical events of ischemic death, myocardial infarction, acute coronary syndromes and ischemic strokes. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) (Lp-PLA(2)) seems to play a major role in the development of such high-risk lesions, in both the coronary and carotid arteries. Darapladib is a selective inhibitor of Lp-PLA(2)., Areas Covered in This Review: An overview of darapladib by reviewing the studies (1990 - 2009) that have provided the rationale for the development of darapladib; and a discussion of its potential merit as a new therapeutic drug to target high-risk atherosclerosis., What the Reader Will Gain: The reader should gain an understanding of the importance of inflammation during atherogenesis as well as of the biology of Lp-PLA(2) and its proatherogenic role. Additional insights will be gained into the role of selective inhibitors of Lp-PLA(2) as new therapeutic agents., Take Home Message: Darapladib is a selective inhibitor of Lp-PLA(2) and represents a new class of therapeutic agents that target inflammation to treat high-risk atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is now recognized as an inflammatory/immunomodulatory reaction to the presence of oxidized low-density lipoproteins within the arterial wall, often times in the setting of such risk factors as family history, hypercholesterolemia, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus and smoking. The progression to high-risk lesions such as thin-fibrous cap atheromas results in an increased risk of sudden death, acute myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke. The interplay of macrophages, T lymphocytes and mast cells play a central role in both the development but more importantly in the progression of coronary and carotid artery disease to high-risk phenotypes.

The Sec7 domain ADP-ribosylation factor (Arf) guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs) are found in all eukaryotes, and are involved in membrane remodeling processes throughout the cell. This review is focused on members of the GBF/Gea and BIG/Sec7 subfamilies of Arf GEFs, all of which use the class I Arf proteins (Arf1-3) as substrates, and play a fundamental role in trafficking in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-Golgi and endosomal membrane systems. Members of the GBF/Gea and BIG/Sec7 subfamilies are large proteins on the order of 200 kDa, and they possess multiple homology domains. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that both of these subfamilies of Arf GEFs have members in at least five out of the six eukaryotic supergroups, and hence were likely present very early in eukaryotic evolution. The homology domains of the large Arf1 GEFs play important functional roles, and are involved in interactions with numerous protein partners. The large Arf1 GEFs have been implicated in several human diseases. They are crucial host factors for the replication of several viral pathogens, including poliovirus, coxsackievirus, mouse hepatitis coronavirus, and hepatitis C virus. Mutations in the BIG2 Arf1 GEF have been linked to autosomal recessive periventricular heterotopia, a disorder of neuronal migration that leads to severe malformation of the cerebral cortex. Understanding the roles of the Arf1 GEFs in membrane dynamics is crucial to a full understanding of trafficking in the secretory and endosomal pathways, which in turn will provide essential insights into human diseases that arise from misregulation of these pathways.

Save the Children's CS-18 Project implemented from 2003 to 2008 aimed to improve child health and nutritional status people in Quangtri Province through the increased use of life-saving health interventions, both behaviors and services. This baseline survey, conducted at the start of the project to provide data to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention upon its completion. A household survey was conducted of four hundred mothers of children under 2 years of age. Logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between maternal care behaviours and child health, controlling for confounding variables. In-depth interviews with 27 mothers and 4 focus group discussions with 38 mothers were also conducted. The rate of childhood malnutrition was 40.5%. The percentage of mothers that gave birth at home was 56.5%, and only 35.4% of these used a clean home delivery kit. Health staff only attended approximately 17.7% deliveries. Few mothers and newborns (23.8%) were checked after delivery. About half the mothers 54% did not feed their child colostrum, and most mothers (81.6%) stopped breastfeeding before 18 months. 58.8% of the children were sick within a month of birth. Child malnutrition was associated with child sex, age, birth weight, ethnicity, and socio-economic status (P < .001). Low rates of safe delivery and child care practices and high rates of infant illness indicate a need for improved service provision and education. Health facilities should be staffed continuously, promote village health workers in villages. Health staff should carry out a health communication campaign about maternal and child health. Family members, especially husbands, should be encouraged to take care of recent mothers during pregnancy and delivery.

Mariner-like elements (MLEs) are ubiquitous DNA mobile elements found in almost all eukaryote genomes. Nevertheless most of the known copies are inactive and the question of the genome invasion by MLEs remains largely hypothetical. We have previously reported the presence of highly homologous copies of MLEs in the genome of phylogenetically distant crustacea living in the same hydrothermal environment suggesting the possibility of horizontal transfer. In order to further support the hypothesis that horizontal transmission of MLEs might occur between crustacean sympatric species, we described here 85 MLE sequences found in the genome of a large spectrum of coastal crab species. The number of the MLEs copies in genomes was variable. Half of these MLEs fit with the irritans subfamily of MLEs whereas the second half grouped in a new subfamily called marmoratus. In addition, a molecular phylogeny of crabs was established by using the 16S information. The comparison between 16S and MLEs based trees reveals their incongruence, and suggests either the existence of horizontal transfer events between phylogenetically distant species, or an ancestral MLE polymorphism followed by different evolution and stochastic loss.

Background: 1) To elicit the opinions of the Public Health alumni of the MPH program; 2) To assess the applicability of the knowledge and skills acquired; 3) To identify the frequency of the public health competencies that the alumni performed., Methods: We requested 187 graduates to complete a self-administered questionnaire and conducted in-depth interviews with 8 alumni as well as a focus group discussion with 14 alumni., Results: In total 79.1% (148) of the MPH graduates completed and returned the questionnaire. Most alumni (91%) agreed that the MPH curriculum corresponded with the working requirements of public health professionals; and nearly all were satisfied with what they have learnt (96%). Most respondents said that the MPH program enabled them to develop relevant professional skills (95%) and that they were satisfied with the curriculum (90%). Notably fewer respondents (73%) felt that the MPH program structure was balanced and well designed. Most alumni (64.3%) were satisfied with Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH) full-time lecturers; but even more (83%) were satisfied with visiting lecturers. The most commonly selected of the 34 pre-identified public health competencies were: applying computer skills (66.4%), planning and managing health programs (47.9%), communicating with the community and/or mobilizing the community to participate in health care (43.2%). Overall, the MPH alumni felt that HSPH emphasized research methods at the expense of some management and operational competencies. The most important challenges at work identified by the alumni were insufficient skills in: data analysis, decision making, inter-sectoral cooperation development, English language and training., Conclusion: The training program should be reviewed and revised to meet the needs of its graduates who enter diverse situations and positions. English language skills were identified as top priority for further emphasis. The training program should comply with a more advanced accreditation system and standards.
