1. A novel section-section potential for short-range interactions between plane beams

Abstract

We derive a novel formulation for the interaction potential between deformable fibers due to short-range fields arising from intermolecular forces. The formulation improves the existing section-section interaction potential law for in-plane beams by considering an offset between interacting cross sections. The new law is asymptotically consistent, which is particularly beneficial for computationally demanding scenarios involving short-range interactions like van der Waals and steric forces. The formulation is implemented within a framework of rotation-free Bernoulli-Euler beams utilizing the isogeometric paradigm. The improved accuracy of the novel law is confirmed through thorough numerical studies. We apply the developed formulation to investigate the complex behavior observed during peeling and pull-off of elastic fibers interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential.

Abstract

This paper details the first application of a software tagging algorithm to reduce radon-induced backgrounds in liquid noble element time projection chambers, such as XENON1T and XENONnT. The convection velocity field in XENON1T was mapped out using $^{222}\text{Rn}$ and $^{218}\text{Po}$ events, and the root-mean-square convection speed was measured to be $0.30 \pm 0.01$ cm/s. Given this velocity field, $^{214}\text{Pb}$ background events can be tagged when they are followed by $^{214}\text{Bi}$ and $^{214}\text{Po}$ decays, or preceded by $^{218}\text{Po}$ decays. This was achieved by evolving a point cloud in the direction of a measured convection velocity field, and searching for $^{214}\text{Bi}$ and $^{214}\text{Po}$ decays or $^{218}\text{Po}$ decays within a volume defined by the point cloud. In XENON1T, this tagging system achieved a $^{214}\text{Pb}$ background reduction of $6.2^{+0.4}_{-0.9}\%$ with an exposure loss of $1.8\pm 0.2 \%$, despite the timescales of convection being smaller than the relevant decay times. We show that the performance can be improved in XENONnT, and that the performance of such a software-tagging approach can be expected to be further improved in a diffusion-limited scenario. Finally, a similar method might be useful to tag the cosmogenic $^{137}\text{Xe}$ background, which is relevant to the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay., Comment: 17 pages, 19 figures

Abstract

The multi-staged XENON program at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso aims to detect dark matter with two-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers of increasing size and sensitivity. The XENONnT experiment is the latest detector in the program, planned to be an upgrade of its predecessor XENON1T. It features an active target of 5.9 tonnes of cryogenic liquid xenon (8.5 tonnes total mass in cryostat). The experiment is expected to extend the sensitivity to WIMP dark matter by more than an order of magnitude compared to XENON1T, thanks to the larger active mass and the significantly reduced background, improved by novel systems such as a radon removal plant and a neutron veto. 5. Comprehensive design and whole-cavity simulation of a multi-beam inductive output tube using a 3rd harmonic drive on the grid

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss the design and whole-cavity simulation of a Multi-Beam Inductive Output Tube (MBIOT) that uses a 3rd harmonic component to the drive voltage on the grid. High-efficiency inductive output tubes (IOTs) are typically characterized by efficiencies up to 70 - 75%. However, the achievement of efficiencies greater than 80% would substantially reduce the operating costs of next-generation accelerators. To achieve this goal, we consider the addition of a 3rd harmonic component to the drive signal on the grid. We anticipate that the MBIOT will be used to provide the rf power to drive RF linacs. We discuss and model an 8-beam MBIOT with a 700 MHz resonant cavity using beams with a voltage of 35 kV and an average current of 7.25 A yielding a perveance of about 1.1 microP. We simulate this MBIOT using the NEMESIS simulation code which has been extended using a three-dimensional Poisson solver based upon the Petsc package from Argonne National Laboratory. The effect of the 3rd harmonic on the efficiency is greatest when the phase of the 3rd harmonic is shifted by pi radians with respect to the fundamental drive signal and with 3rd harmonic powers greater than about 50% of the fundamental drive power. For the present example, we show that efficiencies approaching 82% are possible. Abstract

Ion acceleration from gaseous targets driven by relativistic-intensity lasers was demonstrated as early as the late 90s, yet most of the experiments conducted to date have involved picosecond-duration, Nd:glass lasers operating at low repetition rate. Here, we present measurements on the interaction of ultraintense ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm W\,cm^{-2}$, 1 PW), ultrashort ($\sim 70\,\rm fs$) Ti:Sa laser pulses with near-critical ($\sim 10^{20}\,\rm cm^{-3}$) helium gas jets, a debris-free targetry compatible with high ($\sim 1\,\rm Hz$) repetition rate operation. We provide evidence of $\alpha$ particles being forward accelerated up to $\sim 2.7\,\rm MeV$ energy with a total flux of $\sim 10^{11}\,\rm sr^{-1}$ as integrated over $>0.1 \,\rm MeV$ energies and detected within a $0.5\,\rm mrad$ solid angle. We also report on on-axis emission of relativistic electrons with an exponentially decaying spectrum characterized by a $\sim 10\,\rm MeV$ slope, i.e., five times larger than the standard ponderomotive scaling. The total charge of these electrons with energy above 2 MeV is estimated to be of $\sim 1 \,\rm nC$, corresponding to $\sim 0.1\,\%$ of the laser drive energy. In addition, we observe the formation of a plasma channel, extending longitudinally across the gas density maximum and expanding radially with time. These results are well captured by large-scale particle-in-cell simulations, which reveal that the detected fast ions most likely originate from reflection off the rapidly expanding channel walls. The latter process is predicted to yield ion energies in the MeV range, which compare well with the measurements. Finally, direct laser acceleration is shown to be the dominant mechanism behind the observed electron energization.

Abstract

The precision in reconstructing events detected in a dual-phase time projection chamber depends on an homogeneous and well understood electric field within the liquid target. In the XENONnT TPC the field homogeneity is achieved through a double-array field cage, consisting of two nested arrays of field shaping rings connected by an easily accessible resistor chain. Rather than being connected to the gate electrode, the topmost field shaping ring is independently biased, adding a degree of freedom to tune the electric field during operation. Two-dimensional finite element simulations were used to optimize the field cage, as well as its operation. Simulation results were compared to ${}^{83m}\mathrm{Kr}$ calibration data. This comparison indicates an accumulation of charge on the panels of the TPC which is constant over time, as no evolution of the reconstructed position distribution of events is observed. The simulated electric field was then used to correct the charge signal for the field dependence of the charge yield. This correction resolves the inconsistent measurement of the drift electron lifetime when using different calibrations sources and different field cage tuning voltages.

Abstract

We perform a blind search for particle signals in the XENON1T dark matter detector that occur close in time to gravitational wave signals in the LIGO and Virgo observatories. No particle signal is observed in the nuclear recoil, electronic recoil, CE$\nu$NS, and S2-only channels within $\pm$ 500 seconds of observations of the gravitational wave signals GW170104, GW170729, GW170817, GW170818, and GW170823. We use this null result to constrain mono-energetic neutrinos and Beyond Standard Model particles emitted in the closest coalescence GW170817, a binary neutron star merger. We set new upper limits on the fluence (time-integrated flux) of coincident neutrinos down to 17 keV at 90% confidence level. Furthermore, we constrain the product of coincident fluence and cross section of Beyond Standard Model particles to be less than $10^{-29}$ cm$^2$/cm$^2$ in the [5.5-210] keV energy range at 90% confidence level.

Abstract

The hydroxyl radical (OH) fuels atmospheric chemical cycling as the main sink for methane and a driver of the formation and loss of many air pollutants, but direct OH observations are sparse. We develop and evaluate an observation-based proxy for short-term, spatial variations in OH (ProxyOH) in the remote marine troposphere using comprehensive measurements from the NASA Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) airborne campaign. ProxyOH is a reduced form of the OH steady-state equation representing the dominant OH production and loss pathways in the remote marine troposphere, according to box model simulations of OH constrained with ATom observations. ProxyOH comprises only eight variables that are generally observed by routine ground- or satellite-based instruments. ProxyOH scales linearly with in situ [OH] spatial variations along the ATom flight tracks (median r2 = 0.90, interquartile range = 0.80 to 0.94 across 2-km altitude by 20° latitudinal regions). We deconstruct spatial variations in ProxyOH as a first-order approximation of the sensitivity of OH variations to individual terms. Two terms modulate within-region ProxyOH variations-water vapor (H2O) and, to a lesser extent, nitric oxide (NO). This implies that a limited set of observations could offer an avenue for observation-based mapping of OH spatial variations over much of the remote marine troposphere. Both H2O and NO are expected to change with climate, while NO also varies strongly with human activities. We also illustrate the utility of ProxyOH as a process-based approach for evaluating intermodel differences in remote marine tropospheric OH.

Abstract

Multiple viable theoretical models predict heavy dark matter particles with a mass close to the Planck mass, a range relatively unexplored by current experimental measurements. We use 219.4 days of data collected with the XENON1T experiment to conduct a blind search for signals from Multiply-Interacting Massive Particles (MIMPs). Their unique track signature allows a targeted analysis with only 0.05 expected background events from muons. Following unblinding, we observe no signal candidate events. This work places strong constraints on spin-independent interactions of dark matter particles with a mass between 1$\times$10$^{12}\,$GeV/c$^2$ and 2$\times$10$^{17}\,$GeV/c$^2$. In addition, we present the first exclusion limits on spin-dependent MIMP-neutron and MIMP-proton cross-sections for dark matter particles with masses close to the Planck scale., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We developed a detector signal characterization model based on a Bayesian network trained on the waveform attributes generated by a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber. By performing inference on the model, we produced a quantitative metric of signal characterization and demonstrate that this metric can be used to determine whether a detector signal is sourced from a scintillation or an ionization process. We describe the method and its performance on electronic-recoil (ER) data taken during the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. We demonstrate the first use of a Bayesian network in a waveform-based analysis of detector signals. This method resulted in a 3% increase in ER event-selection efficiency with a simultaneously effective rejection of events outside of the region of interest. The findings of this analysis are consistent with the previous analysis from XENONnT, namely a background-only fit of the ER data., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

We report on the first search for nuclear recoils from dark matter in the form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with the XENONnT experiment which is based on a two-phase time projection chamber with a sensitive liquid xenon mass of $5.9$ t. During the approximately 1.1 tonne-year exposure used for this search, the intrinsic $^{85}$Kr and $^{222}$Rn concentrations in the liquid target were reduced to unprecedentedly low levels, giving an electronic recoil background rate of $(15.8\pm1.3)~\mathrm{events}/(\mathrm{t\cdot y \cdot keV})$ in the region of interest. A blind analysis of nuclear recoil events with energies between $3.3$ keV and $60.5$ keV finds no significant excess. This leads to a minimum upper limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section of $2.58\times 10^{-47}~\mathrm{cm}^2$ for a WIMP mass of $28~\mathrm{GeV}/c^2$ at $90\%$ confidence level. Limits for spin-dependent interactions are also provided. Both the limit and the sensitivity for the full range of WIMP masses analyzed here improve on previous results obtained with the XENON1T experiment for the same exposure., Comment: Limit points are included in the submission file

Abstract

The XENONnT detector uses the latest and largest liquid xenon-based time projection chamber (TPC) operated by the XENON Collaboration, aimed at detecting Weakly Interacting Massive Particles and conducting other rare event searches. The XENONnT data acquisition (DAQ) system constitutes an upgraded and expanded version of the XENON1T DAQ system. For its operation, it relies predominantly on commercially available hardware accompanied by open-source and custom-developed software. The three constituent subsystems of the XENONnT detector, the TPC (main detector), muon veto, and the newly introduced neutron veto, are integrated into a single DAQ, and can be operated both independently and as a unified system. In total, the DAQ digitizes the signals of 698 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), of which 253 from the top PMT array of the TPC are digitized twice, at $\times10$ and $\times0.5$ gain. The DAQ for the most part is a triggerless system, reading out and storing every signal that exceeds the digitization thresholds. Custom-developed software is used to process the acquired data, making it available within $\mathcal{O}\left(10\text{ s}\right)$ for live data quality monitoring and online analyses. The entire system with all the three subsystems was successfully commissioned and has been operating continuously, comfortably withstanding readout rates that exceed $\sim500$ MB/s during calibration. Livetime during normal operation exceeds $99\%$ and is $\sim90\%$ during most high-rate calibrations. The combined DAQ system has collected more than 2 PB of both calibration and science data during the commissioning of XENONnT and the first science run.

Abstract

A low-energy electronic recoil calibration of XENON1T, a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber, with an internal $^{37}$Ar source was performed. This calibration source features a 35-day half-life and provides two mono-energetic lines at 2.82 keV and 0.27 keV. The photon yield and electron yield at 2.82 keV are measured to be (32.3$\pm$0.3) photons/keV and (40.6$\pm$0.5) electrons/keV, respectively, in agreement with other measurements and with NEST predictions. The electron yield at 0.27 keV is also measured and it is (68.0$^{+6.3}_{-3.7}$) electrons/keV. The $^{37}$Ar calibration confirms that the detector is well-understood in the energy region close to the detection threshold, with the 2.82 keV line reconstructed at (2.83$\pm$0.02) keV, which further validates the model used to interpret the low-energy electronic recoil excess previously reported by XENON1T. Abstract

We report on a blinded analysis of low-energy electronic-recoil data from the first science run of the XENONnT dark matter experiment. Novel subsystems and the increased 5.9 tonne liquid xenon target reduced the background in the (1, 30) keV search region to $(15.8 \pm 1.3)$ events/(tonne$\times$year$\times$keV), the lowest ever achieved in a dark matter detector and $\sim$5 times lower than in XENON1T. With an exposure of 1.16 tonne-years, we observe no excess above background and set stringent new limits on solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment, and bosonic dark matter., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the most pressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the available parameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), while featuring extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay and through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-based detector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantly advance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, and cosmology. 18. Modeling preeclampsia using human induced pluripotent stem cells

Abstract

Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-specific hypertensive disorder, affecting up to 10% of pregnancies worldwide. The primary etiology is considered to be abnormal development and function of placental cells called trophoblasts. We previously developed a two-step protocol for differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells, first into cytotrophoblast (CTB) progenitor-like cells, and then into both syncytiotrophoblast (STB)- and extravillous trophoblast (EVT)-like cells, and showed that it can model both normal and abnormal trophoblast differentiation. We have now applied this protocol to induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) derived from placentas of pregnancies with or without PE. While there were no differences in CTB induction or EVT formation, PE-iPSC-derived trophoblast showed a defect in syncytialization, as well as a blunted response to hypoxia. RNAseq analysis showed defects in STB formation and response to hypoxia; however, DNA methylation changes were minimal, corresponding only to changes in response to hypoxia. Overall, PE-iPSC recapitulated multiple defects associated with placental dysfunction, including a lack of response to decreased oxygen tension. This emphasizes the importance of the maternal microenvironment in normal placentation, and highlights potential pathways that can be targeted for diagnosis or therapy, while absence of marked DNA methylation changes suggests that other regulatory mechanisms mediate these alterations.

Abstract

We demonstrate laser-driven Helium ion acceleration with cut-off energies above 25 MeV and peaked ion number above $10^8$ /MeV for 22(2) MeV projectiles from near-critical density gas jet targets. We employed shock gas jet nozzles at the high-repetition-rate (HRR) VEGA-2 laser system with 3 J in pulses of 30 fs focused down to intensities in the range between $9\times10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$ and $1.2\times10^{20}$ W/cm$^2$. We demonstrate acceleration spectra with minor shot-to-shot changes for small variations in the target gas density profile. Abstract

The interaction of supersonic laser-generated plasma jets with a secondary gas target was studied experimentally. The plasma parameters of the jet, and the resulting shock, were characterized using a combination of multi-frame interferometry/shadowgraphy, and X-ray diagnostics, allowing for a detailed study of their structure and evolution. The velocity was obtained with an X-ray streak camera, and filtered X-ray pinhole imaging was used to infer the electron temperature of the jet and shock. The topology of the ambient plasma density was found to have a significant effect on the jet and shock formation, as well as on their radiation characteristics. The experimental results were compared with radiation hydrodynamic simulations, thereby providing further insights into the underlying physical processes of the jet and shock formation and evolution.

Abstract

Oceans emit large quantities of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) to the marine atmosphere. The oxidation of DMS leads to the formation and growth of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) with consequent effects on Earth's radiation balance and climate. The quantitative assessment of the impact of DMS emissions on CCN concentrations necessitates a detailed description of the oxidation of DMS in the presence of existing aerosol particles and clouds. In the unpolluted marine atmosphere, DMS is efficiently oxidized to hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF), a stable intermediate in the chemical trajectory toward sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ultimately sulfate aerosol. Using direct airborne flux measurements, we demonstrate that the irreversible loss of HPMTF to clouds in the marine boundary layer determines the HPMTF lifetime (τHPMTF < 2 h) and terminates DMS oxidation to SO2 When accounting for HPMTF cloud loss in a global chemical transport model, we show that SO2 production from DMS is reduced by 35% globally and near-surface (0 to 3 km) SO2 concentrations over the ocean are lowered by 24%. This large, previously unconsidered loss process for volatile sulfur accelerates the timescale for the conversion of DMS to sulfate while limiting new particle formation in the marine atmosphere and changing the dynamics of aerosol growth. This loss process potentially reduces the spatial scale over which DMS emissions contribute to aerosol production and growth and weakens the link between DMS emission and marine CCN production with subsequent implications for cloud formation, radiative forcing, and climate.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), emitted from the oceans, is the most abundant biological source of sulfur to the marine atmosphere. Atmospheric DMS is oxidized to condensable products that form secondary aerosols that affect Earth's radiative balance by scattering solar radiation and serving as cloud condensation nuclei. We report the atmospheric discovery of a previously unquantified DMS oxidation product, hydroperoxymethyl thioformate (HPMTF, HOOCH2SCHO), identified through global-scale airborne observations that demonstrate it to be a major reservoir of marine sulfur. Observationally constrained model results show that more than 30% of oceanic DMS emitted to the atmosphere forms HPMTF. Coincident particle measurements suggest a strong link between HPMTF concentration and new particle formation and growth. Analyses of these observations show that HPMTF chemistry must be included in atmospheric models to improve representation of key linkages between the biogeochemistry of the ocean, marine aerosol formation and growth, and their combined effects on climate.

24. Effectiveness of Technology-Integrated Project-Based Approach for Self-Regulated Learning of Engineering Students

Abstract

The goal of this study is to explore the impact of a technology-integrated project-based learning intervention (ReaLabs) on students' learning attitudes, behaviours and self-regulated learning (SRL). A group of 49 mechanical engineering students was taught using this intervention and a group of 50 students in the same specialty was taught using the traditional method (Google docs). The findings revealed that students in the intervention group reported higher scores in learning attitudes and behaviours. They also reported higher levels of goal setting, task strategies, time management, help-seeking, and self-evaluation skills as compared to students in the control group. In addition, the usefulness of ReaLabs, the use of online tool was better perceived in the intervention group than that of Google docs in the control group. These findings indicate that a smart pedagogy model built on a technology-integrated learner-centered teaching approach may support outcomes related to SRL for engineering education students.

27. Selective labelling of arginine residues in protein sulfated glycosaminoglycan binding sites

Abstract

In animals, the interaction of numerous proteins with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) regulates many aspects of their functions, and so organism development and homeostasis, as well many related pathologies. The interactions between the GAG heparan sulfate (HS) and the fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) have become a major paradigm for how such interactions regulate biological outcomes. Thus, binding HS controls FGF stability, its diffusion between cells and the generation of intracellular signals via the cognate FGF receptors (FGFRs). The basic arginine and lysine amino acids on the surface of FGFs have an important role in binding the polysaccharide via its numerous sulfate and carboxyl groups. Indeed electrostatic bonds between FGF and GAG dominate the interaction, at least kinetically. However, the contribution of arginine residues on the protein surface to GAG binding has generally not been established. This has been addressed directly in this thesis. A means to selectively label and so identify arginine side chains involved in binding heparin as an approximation for cellular GAGs was developed and evaluated, using the two most studied FGFs, FGF1 and FGF2. Two chemicals which selectively and specifically react with the guanidino group of arginine, phenylglyoxal (PGO) and hydroxyphenylglyoxal (HPG) were chosen for the purpose of this work. By combining mass spectrometry and an automatic programming language, the multiple products of PGO's reaction with arginine were readily deconvoluted. The method was then applied to the other thirteen paracrine FGFs, which were produced as recombinant proteins. In addition, lysine selective labelling data were acquired for those FGFs where this was lacking. Thus, a complete description of the surface electrostatic map on fifteen paracrine FGFs guiding heparin engagement was obtained. The addition of arginine residues into the map of binding makes adjustments to the definition of heparin binding sites (HBSs) in some FGFs, for instance, FGF4. The refinement of the assignment of residues to secondary HBSs is consistent with data obtained by others on the ability of particular FGFs (FGF4, FGF6, FGF17, FGF18 and FGF10) to cross-link HS chains. In addition, the data raise some interesting properties of GAG binding, for example, the dual specificity of the secondary heparin binding site, HBS-3, in some FGFs, which is also involved in binding the FGFR. While the results generally support the idea that the conservation of structures for GAG binding in FGFs is related to their evolutionary divergence, it also suggests that changes in the structures in GAG binding may in some instances have diverged more rapidly since an amino acid substitution between members of a subfamily enables a significant alteration in heparin engagement. This suggests that in some instances, changes to the heparin binding properties of an FGF may contribute to a diversification of function within a subfamily. A further method was developed, whereby the entire selective labelling was done in solution, without the need for a heparin affinity column. The method was applied to the interactions of members of the FGF7 subfamily (FGF3, FGF7, and FGF10) with heparin, followed by chondroitin sulfate (CS), dermatan sulfate (DS). This allowed the analysis of lysine residues involved in binding physiologically relevant GAGs rather than heparin. Finally, the wider applicability of the method was acquired by determining the lysine and arginine residues that bind heparin in a 'phage display antibody', HS4C3. Due to the selectivity of HS4C3 for anticoagulant structures in heparin through its CDR3 loop, it was possible to use the data to propose a means to model protein-GAG binding. This was demonstrated using the knowledge of the binding specificity of HS4C3 for 3-O-sulfate and the positions of residues identified by the selective labelling. Taken together, the work in this thesis provides new insight into the involvement of arginine and lysine residues in the engagement of proteins to GAGs. This may enable future 'omics' approaches to identify GAG binding sites in proteins in cells and tissues, and to predict from principles where such sites are on a protein surface.

Abstract

Emission estimates of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) and the meteorological factors affecting them are investigated over Sacramento, California, using an aircraft equipped with a cavity ring-down greenhouse gas sensor as part of the Alpha Jet Atmospheric eXperiment (AJAX) project. To better constrain the emission fluxes, we designed flights in a cylindrical pattern and computed the emission fluxes from two flights using a kriging method and Gauss's divergence theorem. Differences in wind treatment and assumptions about background concentrations affect the emission estimates by a factor of 1.5 to 7. The uncertainty is also impacted by meteorological conditions and distance from the emission sources. The vertical layer averaging affects the flux estimate, but the choice of raw wind or mass-balanced wind is more important than the thickness of the vertical averaging for mass-balanced wind for both urban and local scales. The importance of vertical mass transfer for flux estimates is examined, and the difference in the total emission estimate with and without vertical mass transfer is found to be small, especially at the local scale. The total flux estimates accounting for the entire circumference are larger than those based solely on measurements made in the downwind region. This indicates that a closed-shape flight profile can better contain total emissions relative to a one-sided curtain flight because most cities have more than one point source and wind direction can change with time and altitude. To reduce the uncertainty of the emission estimate, it is important that the sampling strategy account not only for known source locations but also possible unidentified sources around the city. Our results highlight that aircraft-based measurements using a closed-shape flight pattern are an efficient and useful strategy for identifying emission sources and estimating local- and city-scale greenhouse gas emission fluxes.

Abstract

Inappropriate fertilizer application for rice crop resulted in the yield and soil fertility issues, then biochar and bioorganic utilization considered as the best solution for this situation. This study aimed to assess the combination of biochar and BOFs on growth and yield of lowland rice. The experiments were conducted at the field in Thua Thien Hue province, Central Vietnam in two crop seasons from 2023-2024. The completely randomized block experimental design involved three replications with five treatment combinations i.e., 100% NPK (control); 80% NPK + 5 t/ha BOF + 2 t/ha biochar; 80% CMOF + 5 t/ha BF + 2 t/ha biochar + 400 kg/ha lime; 70% CMOF + 5 t/ha BOF + 3 t/ha biochar + 400 kg/ha lime; 60% CMOF + 10 t/ha BOF + 3 t/ha biochar + 400 kg/ha lime. The effect of these treatments was analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and least significant difference (LSD) with a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). We found that the optimal combination is 80% NPK + 5 t/ha BOF + 2 t/ha biochar on rice plant height (98.67 cm), dry matter (12.43 g/plant) and economic yields (6.95 t/ha). Abstract

We studied the causes of mortality for the California Ridgway’s rail at multiple tidal marshes in the San Francisco Bay Estuary, California. We radio-marked 196 individual rails and examined the evidence from 152 recovered California Ridgway’s rail mortalities from our radio-marked sample and determined plausible cause of death from a wide array of evidence. We also included 10 additional California Ridgway’s rail mortalities (unmarked) that we encountered during our normal field operations. We assigned a likely cause of death to 130 of the recoveries, of which 127 were determined to be caused by predation. Of those, 103 could be divided into class of cause (avian or mammalian), and avian predators were responsible for 64% of those events. Primary predators identified include domestic or feral cats, red fox, owl, and northern harrier. We did find seasonal differences between avian and mammalian predation rates, with higher proportions of avian predation in the winter and early spring. Time of day and tide height were correlated with predation events, with a greater proportion of known mortalities found during periods of high tides (over 60% marsh inundation) and during daylight hours. Predation is the primary source of mortality for California Ridgway’s rail. Management actions that try to reduce avian predation may be the most effective at improving rail survival rates, given the proportion of avian predation detected.

33. Results on attempts in management of HLB under small scale in Vietnam and initiation in screening for HLB tolerant from varieties/clones belonging to Rutaceae

Abstract

In the Mekong Delta, Vietnam, Citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) was officially announced in 1994 and its causal organism was described by Bove and Garnier in 1995 to be Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. Throughout the years, intensive works have been carried out for HLB control under small scale orchards and the achievements are discussed, the model for effective control of HLB under small scale which could elongate the life cycle of citrus tree for better and longer harvesting. In addition, there were 130 rutaceae related accessions had been collected and screened for HLB tolerance; the results revealed that the serverity of HLB infection was less on Hanh/Tac/Quat (Citrus microcarpa) and Long Co co pummelo (Citrus maxima) than that on orange and mandarin. The wild Rutaceae species/clones such as Quyt Dang, Quyt rung, Cam rung, Buoi Rung, Buoi Dang, Buoi Bung, Mac Run, Mac Mat, Can Thang, Quach, Nguyet Que, Kim quit, Truc, Com Ruou, Dau dau ba la, Ca ri, Da tu bien and Gioi Lom were symptomless under transmission conditions and had a negative reaction by PCR tests. In a molecular study, 38 primers have been designed and used for screening of HLB tolerance capacity of 49 varieties/clones belonging to Rutaceae. The preliminary results shown that the tolerant varieties was grouped into Group D, which somehow matched with the tolerant group screened under screenhouse conditions.

Abstract

Pervasive cirrus clouds in the tropical tropopause layer (TTL) play an important role in determining the composition of stratospheric air through dehydration of tropospheric air entering the stratosphere. This dehydration affects Earth's energy budget and climate, yet uncertainties remain regarding the microphysical processes that govern TTL cirrus. TTL cirrus were sampled with the NASA Global Hawk UAV for over 30 hr in the Western Pacific in 2014 during the Airborne Tropical TRopopause EXperiment. In situ measurements by a Fast Cloud Droplet Probe and Hawkeye probe (combination Fast Cloud Droplet Probe, Two‐Dimensional Stereo optical array probe, and Cloud Particle Imager) provided particle concentrations and sizing between 1‐ and 1,280‐μm diameter and high resolution images for habit identification. We present the variability in ice concentrations, size distributions, and habits as functions of temperature, altitude, and time since convective influence. Observed ice particles were predominantly small and quasi‐spheroidal in shape, with the percentage of quasi‐spheroids increasing with decreasing temperature. In comparison to the large fraction of the population consisting of quasi‐spheroids, faceted habits (columns, plates, rosettes, and budding rosettes) constituted a smaller percentage of the overall population and exhibited the opposite correlation with temperature. The trend of higher percentages of faceted crystals occurring at warmer temperatures may be due to diffusional growth or aggregation as particles descend through cloud, and/or the more rapid diffusional growth rate at warmer temperatures. Sampling was typically well away from deep convection, however, and very few aggregates were observed, so the trend of higher percentages of faceted habits is likely attributable to diffusional growth.
