Abstract

Sea lice are a critical health issue in most salmonid farming regions. New cage-based technologies can prevent infestations from occurring, such as the ‘snorkel’, which introduces an impermeable barrier that separates salmon lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis from Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in the surface waters where lice are most abundant. While snorkels provide protection from lice, their lice-reducing effect can vary under different environmental conditions. We conducted production-scale sea-cage experiments at 2 sites with contrasting salinity environments in Norway. At the coastal site, with a weak and unsystematic halocline, snorkels reduced lice infestations by 76%. However, at the fjord site, with brackish surface waters and a strong halocline, snorkels did not reduce lice relative to control cages, likely because both lice and salmon remained deeper in the water column below the brackish layer, and infection rate was similar. At the fjord site, as lice numbers between snorkel and control cages were similar, we tested for differences in the absence of the potentially confounding effect of different lice levels. Snorkel cages at the fjord site modified swimming speeds (1.14 times faster), surface breaching behaviours (2.8 times less), and total echo-sounder signal strength of fish (an index of swim bladder fullness; 30-40% less) relative to control cages. Production parameters remained similar, but snout condition was poorer in snorkel cages, suggesting more frequent contact with cage netting. Our results suggest that salinity is a significant environmental factor that alters the lice-reducing efficacy of depth-based technologies such as snorkels. Further, snorkels affect salmon behaviour, which must be considered in welfare assessments of their use.

Abstract

The development rate of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is greatly influenced by seawater temperature. This study describes how the growth rate of L. salmonis changes with temperature and identifies the extreme high and low temperatures at which development to the adult stage is compromised. Atlantic salmon Salmo salar were infected with copepodids and development was monitored in 8 temperature groups spanning 3 to 24°C until the lice were adults. Development was severely compromised at 3 and 24°C, while the lice developed normally in the temperature range from 6 to 21°C. At 6°C, most female lice had become adults at 72 d post infection (432 degree-days). At 21°C, development was significantly faster and most females were adults after 13 d, at only 271 degree-days. After infection, lice grew through 5 stages before reaching the adult stage, all of which, with a few exceptions, appeared to last approximately equally long. Thus, a simple model describing the mean daily growth rate (stages per day) as a function of temperature was made for each sex. The relationship between mean daily growth rate and temperature was best described by a second-order polynomial. The term relative age is introduced and used to describe the pattern of development in terms of percent of total development time to the adult stage. This was applied to calculate the timing of developmental events as a function of temperature. Photoperiod and development under rising or decreasing temperatures had minor effects on development rate.

Abstract

We report on the fabrication and characterization of a few-electron quantum dot controlled by a single gate electrode. Our device has a double-quantum-well design, in which the doping controls the occupancy of the lower well while the upper well remains empty under the free surface. A small air-bridged gate contacts the surface, and is positively biased to draw laterally confined electrons into the upper well. Electrons tunneling between this accumulation-mode dot and the lower well are detected using a quantum point contact (QPC), located slightly offset from the dot gate. The charge state of the dot is measured by monitoring the differential transconductance of the QPC near pinch-off. Addition spectra starting with N=0 were observed as a function of gate voltage. DC sensitivity to single electrons was determined to be as high as 8.6%, resulting in a signal-to-noise ratio of ~9:1 with an equivalent noise bandwidth of 12.1 kHz. Analysis of random telegraph signals associated with the zero to one electron transition allowed a measurement of the lifetimes for the filled and empty states of the one-electron dot: 0.38 ms and 0.22 ms, respectively, for a device with a 10 nm AlInAs tunnel barrier between the two wells., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Pseuderanthemum palatiferum is a commonly used ornamental plant in Vietnam. It is getting more attention due to its medicinal values. In this study, the genetic composition of 16 P. palatiferum accessions and relatives collected from Vietnam were analyzed using 16 RAPD and ISSR molecular markers. The obtained results show that both RAPD and ISSR produced a high number of polymorphic bands. The similarity coefficient varies among RAPD and ISSR, from 0.53 - 0.95 and 0.32 - 0.91, respectively. Mantel test also shows poor correlation between RAPD and ISSR markers. Both data from RAPD markers or combination of RAPD and ISSR markers could differentiate P. palatiferum from its relatives. The obtained results reveal the large variation in genetic composition of P. palatiferum population in Vietnam. The findings could be beneficial in classification, identification, and conservation efforts of P. palatiferum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
