In this work, we spectroscopically select narrow-line AGN (NLAGN) among the $\sim 300$ publicly available medium-resolution spectra of the CEERS Survey. Using both traditional and newly identified emission line NLAGN diagnostics diagrams, we identified 52 NLAGN at $2\lesssim z\lesssim 9$ on which we performed a detailed multiwavelength analysis. We also identified 4 new $z\lesssim 2$ broad-line AGN (BLAGN), in addition to the 8 previously reported high-$z$ BLAGN. We found that the traditional BPT diagnostic diagrams are not suited to identify high-$z$ AGN, while most of the high-$z$ NLAGN are selected using the recently proposed AGN diagnostic diagrams based on the [OIII]$\lambda$4363 auroral line or high-ionization emission lines. We compared the emission line velocity dispersion and the obscuration of the sample of NLAGN with those of the parent sample without finding significant differences between the two distributions, suggesting a population of AGN heavily buried and not significantly impacting the host galaxies' physical properties, as further confirmed by SED-fitting. The bolometric luminosities of the high-$z$ NLAGNs selected in this work are well below those sampled by surveys before JWST, potentially explaining the weak impact of these AGN. Finally, we investigate the X-ray properties of the selected NLAGN and of the sample of high-$z$ BLAGN. We find that all but 4 NLAGN are undetected in the deep X-ray image of the field, as well as all the high-$z$ BLAGN. We do not obtain a detection even by stacking the undetected sources, resulting in an X-ray weakness of $\sim 1-2$ dex from what is expected based on their bolometric luminosities. To discriminate between a heavily obscured AGN scenario or an intrinsic X-ray weakness of these sources, we performed a radio stacking analysis, which did not reveal any detection leaving open the questions about the origin of the X-ray weakness., Comment: Submitted to A&A, comments are welcome

One of the greatest challenges in galaxy evolution over the last decade has been constraining the prevalence of heavily dust-obscured galaxies in the early Universe. At $z>3$, these galaxies are increasingly rare, and difficult to identify as they are interspersed among the more numerous dust-obscured galaxy population at $z=1-3$, making efforts to secure confident spectroscopic redshifts expensive, and sometimes unsuccessful. In this work, we present the Extended Mapping Obscuration to Reionization with ALMA (Ex-MORA) Survey -- a 2mm blank-field survey in the COSMOS-Web field, and the largest ever ALMA blank-field survey to-date covering 577 arcmin$^2$. Ex-MORA is an expansion of the MORA survey designed to identify primarily $z>3$ dusty, star-forming galaxies while simultaneously filtering out the more numerous $z<3$ population by leveraging the very negative $K$-correction at observed-frame 2mm. We identify 37 significant ($>$5$\sigma$) sources, 33 of which are robust thermal dust emitters. We measure a median redshift of $\langle z \rangle = 3.6^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, with two-thirds of the sample at $z>3$, and just under half at $z>4$, demonstrating the overall success of the 2mm-selection technique. The integrated $z>3$ volume density of Ex-MORA sources is $\sim1-3\times10^{-5}$ Mpc$^{-3}$, consistent with other surveys of infrared luminous galaxies at similar epochs. We also find that techniques using rest-frame optical emission (or lack thereof) to identify $z>3$ heavily dust-obscured galaxies miss at least half of Ex-MORA galaxies. Star clusters (SCs) are potential cosmic-ray (CR) accelerators and therefore are expected to emit high-energy radiation. However, a clear detection of gamma-ray emission from this source class has only been possible for a handful of cases. This could in principle result from two different reasons: either detectable SCs are limited to a small fraction of the total number of Galactic SCs, or gamma-ray-emitting SCs are not recognized as such and therefore are listed in the ensemble of unidentified sources. In this Letter we investigate this latter scenario, by comparing available catalogs of SCs and HII regions, obtained from Gaia and WISE observations, to the gamma-ray GeV and TeV catalogs built from Fermi-LAT, H.E.S.S. and LHAASO data. The significance of the correlation between catalogs is evaluated by comparing the results with simulations of synthetic populations. A strong correlation emerges between Fermi-LAT unidentified sources and HII regions which trace massive SCs in the earliest (< 1-2 Myr) phase of their life, where no supernova explosions have happened yet, confirming that winds of massive stars can alone accelerate particles and produce gamma-ray emission at least up to GeV energies. The association with TeV-energies sources is less evident. Similarly, no significant association is found between Gaia SCs and GeV nor TeV sources. We ascribe this fact to the larger extension of these objects, but also to an intrinsic bias in the Gaia selection towards SCs surrounded by a lower target gas density, that would otherwise hinder the detection in the optical waveband., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with z < 0.3 detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1Re and then an enhancement beyond 1Re , strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. In this work, we study the AGN radio detection effectiveness in the major deep extragalactic surveys, considering different AGN obscuration levels, redshift, and AGN bolometric luminosities. We particularly focus on comparing their radio and X-ray detectability, making predictions for present and future radio surveys. We extrapolate the predictions of AGN population synthesis model of cosmic X-ray background (CXB) to the radio band, by deriving the 1.4 GHz luminosity functions of unobscured (i.e. with hydrogen column densities $\log N_{H} <22$), obscured ($22<\log N_{H}<24$) and Compton-thick (CTK, $\log N_{H} >24$) AGN. We then use these functions to forecast the number of detectable AGN based on the area, flux limit, and completeness of a given radio survey and compare it with the AGN number resulting from X-ray predictions. When applied to deep extragalactic fields covered both by radio and X-ray observations, we show that, while X-ray selection is generally more effective in detecting unobscured AGN, the surface density of CTK AGN radio detected is on average $\sim 10$ times larger than the X-ray one, and even greater at high redshifts, considering the current surveys and facilities. Our results suggest that thousands of CTK AGN are already present in current radio catalogs, but most of them escaped any detection in the corresponding X-ray observations. We also present expectations for the number of AGN to be detected by the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO) in its future deep and wide radio continuum surveys, finding that it will be able to detect more than 2000 AGN at $z>6$ and some tens at $z>10$, more than half of which are expected to be CTK., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication on A&A

Evolutionary models suggest that the initial growth phases of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are dust-enshrouded, and characterised by jet/wind outflows that should gradually clear the interstellar medium (ISM) in the host by heating and/or expelling the surrounding gas. eFEDSJ091157.4$+$014327 (z$\sim$0.6) was selected from X-ray samples for its characteristics that are similar to sources with outflows which include red, obscured and X-ray luminous. We aim to explore the environment around this red quasar and characterise kinematics within the system. We used spatially resolved spectroscopic data from Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) with an average seeing of 0.6" to construct flux, velocity and velocity dispersions maps. We found that the quasar is embedded in an interacting and merging system with three other galaxies $\sim$ 50 kpc from its nucleus. Spatially resolved kinematics reveal that the quasar has extended ionised outflows of up to 9.2 kpc with positive and negative velocities up to 1000 km s$^{-1}$ and -1200 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The velocity dispersion (W$_{80}$) ranges from 600-1800 km s$^{-1}$. We associate the presence of turbulent and high-velocity components with the outflow. The total mass outflow rate is estimated to be $\sim$ 10 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and kinetic power of 2x10$^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The kinetic coupling efficiencies range from 0.01%-0.03% and the momentum boosts are $\sim$ 0.2. These low values indicate that the ionised outflow is not energetically relevant. These values don't align with the theoretical predictions of both radiation-pressure-driven outflows and energy-conserving mechanisms. However, note that our results are based only on the ionised phase while theoretical predictions are multiphase. In the context of an evolutionary model, the outflow phase of an Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) occurs at the peak of its activity, once the central SMBH is massive enough to generate sufficient power to counterbalance the potential well of the host galaxy. This phase plays a vital role in galaxy evolution. We aim to apply various selection methods to isolate powerful AGNs in the feedback phase, trace and characterise their outflows, and explore the link between AGN luminosity and outflow properties. We applied a combination of methods to the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth survey (eFEDS) catalogue and isolated ~1400 candidates at z>0.5 out of ~11750 AGNs (~12\%). We tested the robustness of our selection on the small subsample of 50 sources with available good quality SDSS spectra at 0.51\%. We find that the majority of the outflows have momentum flux ratios lower than 20 which rules out an energy-conserving nature. Our present work points to the unequivocal existence of a rather short AGN outflow phase, paving the way towards a new avenue to dissect AGN outflows in large samples within eROSITA and beyond., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics(A&A), 24 pages, 18 figures, 5 tables

Context. The soft excess, a surplus of X-ray photons above 2 keV with respect to a power law, is a feature of debated physical origin found in the X-ray spectra of many type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGN). The eROSITA instrument aboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission will provide an all-sky census of AGN suitable for spectral analysis. Aims. The primary goal of this work is to test a variety of models for the soft X-ray emission of AGN (thermal emission, non-thermal emission, ionised absorption, or neutral partial covering absorption) to help identify the physical origin of the soft X-ray spectral complexity. Differences between these models are examined in the context of this sample to understand the physical properties. Methods. We used Bayesian X-ray analysis to fit a sample of 200 AGN from the eFEDS hard X-ray--selected sample with a variety of phenomenological and physically motivated models. Model selection was performed using the Bayes factor to compare the applicability of each model. Results. We find that 29 sources have evidence for a soft excess at a confidence level >97.5%, all of which are better modelled by an additional soft power law than by thermal blackbody emission. We find 23 of these sources prefer a warm corona model, while six sources prefer relativistic blurred reflection. Additionally many sources show evidence for complex absorption, with 29 preferring a warm absorber and 25 a partial covering absorber. Sources with a soft excess show a significantly higher Eddington ratio than those with warm absorbers. We discuss the implication of these results for the physical processes in the central regions of AGN. Conclusions. Spectral fitting with Bayesian statistics is ideal for the identification of complex absorption and soft excesses in the X-ray spectra of AGN and can allow one to distinguish between different physical interpretations. The 500ks Chandra ACIS-I observation of the field around the $z=6.31$ quasar SDSS J1030+0524 is currently the 5th deepest extragalactic X-ray survey. The rich multi-band coverage of the field allowed for an effective identification and redshift determination of the X-ray source counterparts: to date a catalog of 243 extragalactic X-ray sources with either a spectroscopic or photometric redshift estimate in the range $z\approx0-6$ is available over a 355 arcmin$^2$ area. Given its depth and the multi-band information, this catalog is an excellent resource to investigate X-ray spectral properties of distant Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and derive the redshift evolution of their obscuration. We performed a thorough X-ray spectral analysis for each object in the sample, measuring its nuclear column density $N_{\rm H}$ and intrinsic (de-absorbed) 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosity, $L_{2-10}$. Whenever possible, we also used the presence of the Fe K$_\alpha$ emission line to improve the photometric redshift estimates. We measured the fractions of AGN hidden by column densities in excess of $10^{22}$ and $10^{23}$cm$^{-2}$ ($f_{22}$ and $f_{23}$, respectively) as a function of $L_{2-10}$ and redshift, and corrected for selection effects to recover the intrinsic obscured fractions. At $z\sim 1.2$, we found $f_{22}\sim0.7-0.8$ and $f_{23}\sim0.5-0.6$, respectively, in broad agreement with the results from other X-ray surveys. No significant variations with X-ray luminosity were found within the limited luminosity range probed by our sample (log$L_{2-10}\sim 42.8-44.3$). When focusing on luminous AGN with log$L_{2-10}\sim44$ to maximize the sample completeness up to large cosmological distances, we did not observe any significant change in $f_{22}$ or $f_{23}$ over the redshift range $z\sim0.8-3$. Quasar feedback in the form of powerful outflows is invoked as a key mechanism to quench star formation in galaxies, although direct observational evidence is still scarce and debated. Here we present Early Release Science JWST NIRSpec IFU observations of the z=1.59 prototypical obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) XID2028: This target represents a unique test case for studying quasar feedback at the peak epoch of AGN-galaxy co-evolution because extensive multi-wavelength coverage is available and a massive and extended outflow is detected in the ionised and molecular components. With the unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution of the JWST, the NIRSpec dataset reveals a wealth of structures in the ionised gas kinematics and morphology that were previously hidden in the seeing-limited ground-based data. In particular, we find evidence of an interaction between the interstellar medium of the galaxy and the quasar-driven outflow and radio jet that produces an expanding bubble from which the fast and extended wind detected in previous observations emerges. The new observations confirm the complex interplay between the AGN jet, wind and the interstellar medium of the host galaxy, highlighting the role of low-luminosity radio jets in AGN feedback. This study aims at identifying luminous quasars at $z>5.7$ among X-ray-selected sources in the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) in order to place a lower limit on black hole accretion well into the epoch of re-ionisation. We confirm the low significance detection with eROSITA of a previously known, optically faint $z=6.56$ quasar from the Subaru High-z Exploration of Low-luminosity Quasars (SHELLQs) survey. We obtained a pointed follow-up observation of the source with the Chandra X-ray telescope in order to confirm the eROSITA detection. Using new near-infrared spectroscopy, we derived the physical properties of the super-massive black hole. Finally, we used this detection to infer a lower limit on the black hole accretion density rate at $z>6$. The Chandra observation confirms the eFEDS source as the most distant blind X-ray detection to date. The derived X-ray luminosity is high with respect to the rest-frame optical emission of the quasar. With a narrow MgII line, low derived black hole mass, and high Eddington ratio, as well as its steep photon index, the source shows properties that are similar to local narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, which are thought to be powered by young super-massive black holes. In combination with a previous high-redshift quasar detection in the field, we show that quasars with $L_{2-10 \, \mathrm{keV}} >10^{45} \, \mathrm{erg \, s^{-1}}$ dominate accretion onto super-massive black holes at $z\sim 6$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

This paper explores the role of small-scale environment ($<1$ Mpc) in modulating accretion events onto supermassive black holes by studying the incidence of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in massive clusters of galaxies. A flexible, data-driven semi-empirical model is developed based on a minimal set of parameters and under the zero order assumption that the incidence of AGN in galaxies is independent of environment. This is used to predict how the fraction of X-ray selected AGN among galaxies in massive dark matter halos ($\gtrsim 3\times 10^{14}\,M_{\odot}$) evolves with redshift and reveal tensions with observations. At high redshift, $z\sim1.2$, the model underpredicts AGN fractions, particularly at high X-ray luminosities, $L_X(\rm 2-10\,keV) \gtrsim 10^{44}\, erg \, s^{-1}$. At low redshift, $z\sim0.2$, the model estimates fractions of moderate luminosity AGN ($L_X(\rm 2-10\,keV) \gtrsim 10^{43}\, erg \, s^{-1}$) that are a factor of $2-3$ higher than the observations. These findings reject the zero order assumption on which the semi-empirical model hinges and point to a strong and redshift-dependent influence of the small-scale environment on the growth of black holes. Cluster of galaxies appear to promote AGN activity relative to the model expectation at $z\sim1.2$ and suppress it close to the present day. The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory performed calibration and performance verification (CalPV) observations between September 2019 and December 2019, ahead of the planned four-year all-sky surveys. Most of them were deep, pointing-mode observations. We present here the X-ray catalog detected from the set of extra-galactic CalPV observations released to the public by the German eROSITA consortium, and the multiband counterparts of these X-ray sources. We developed a source detection method optimized for point-like X-ray sources by including extended X-ray emission in the background measurement. The multiband counterparts were identified using a Bayesian method from the CatWISE catalog. Combining 11 CalPV fields, we present a catalog containing 9515 X-ray sources, whose X-ray fluxes were measured through spectral fitting. CatWISE counterparts are presented for 77% of the sources. Significant variabilities are found in 99 of the sources, which are also presented with this paper. This paper documents the seventeenth data release (DR17) from the Sloan Digital Sky Surveys; the fifth and final release from the fourth phase (SDSS-IV). DR17 contains the complete release of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, which reached its goal of surveying over 10,000 nearby galaxies. The complete release of the MaNGA Stellar Library (MaStar) accompanies this data, providing observations of almost 30,000 stars through the MaNGA instrument during bright time. DR17 also contains the complete release of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment 2 (APOGEE-2) survey which publicly releases infra-red spectra of over 650,000 stars. The main sample from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS), as well as the sub-survey Time Domain Spectroscopic Survey (TDSS) data were fully released in DR16. New single-fiber optical spectroscopy released in DR17 is from the SPectroscipic IDentification of ERosita Survey (SPIDERS) sub-survey and the eBOSS-RM program. Along with the primary data sets, DR17 includes 25 new or updated Value Added Catalogs (VACs). This paper concludes the release of SDSS-IV survey data. SDSS continues into its fifth phase with observations already underway for the Milky Way Mapper (MWM), Local Volume Mapper (LVM) and Black Hole Mapper (BHM) surveys., Comment: 40 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables. The eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS), executed during the performance verification phase of the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG)/eROSITA telescope, was completed in Nov. 2019. One of the science goals of this survey is to demonstrate the ability of eROSITA to detect samples of clusters and groups at the final depth of the eROSITA all-sky survey. Because of the sizeable point-spread function of eROSITA, high-redshift clusters of galaxies or compact nearby groups hosting bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be misclassified as point sources by the source detection algorithms. A total of 346 galaxy clusters and groups in the redshift range of 0.1

We publicly release the spectroscopic and photometric redshift catalog of the sources detected with Chandra in the field of the $z$=6.3 quasar SDSS J1030+0525. This is currently the fifth deepest X-ray field, and reaches a 0.5-2 keV flux limit $f_{\rm 0.5-2}$=6$\times$10$^{-17}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. By using two independent methods, we measure a photometric redshift for 243 objects, while 123 (51%) sources also have a spectroscopic redshift, 110 of which coming from an INAF-Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Strategic Program. We use the spectroscopic redshifts to determine the quality of the photometric ones, and find it in agreement with that of other X-ray surveys which used a similar number of photometric data-points. In particular, we measure a sample normalized median absolute deviation $\sigma_{NMAD}$=1.48||$z_{phot}$-$z_{spec}$||/(1+$z_{spec}$)=0.065. We use these new spectroscopic and photometric redshifts to study the properties of the Chandra J1030 field. We observe several peaks in our spectroscopic redshift distribution between $z$=0.15 and $z$=1.5, and find that the sources in each peak are often distributed across the whole Chandra field of view. This evidence confirms that X-ray selected AGN can efficiently track large-scale structures over physical scales of several Mpc. Finally, we computed the Chandra J1030 $z>$3 number counts: while the spectroscopic completeness at high-redshift of our sample is limited, our results point towards a potential source excess at $z\geq$4, which we plan to either confirm or reject in the near future with dedicated spectroscopic campaigns., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures. The eROSITA X-ray telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite has started to detect new X-ray sources over the full sky at an unprecedented rate. Understanding the performance and selection function of the source detection is important for the subsequent scientific analysis of the eROSITA catalogs. Through simulations, we test and optimize the eROSITA source detection procedures, and we characterize the detected catalog quantitatively. Taking the eROSITA Final Equatorial-Depth Survey (eFEDS) as an example, we ran extensive photon-event simulations based on our best knowledge of the instrument characteristics, the background spectrum, and the population of astronomical X-ray sources. We introduce a method of analyzing source detection completeness, purity, and efficiency based on the origin of each photon. According to the source detection efficiency measured in the simulation, we chose a two-pronged strategy to build eROSITA X-ray catalogs, creating a main catalog using only the most sensitive band (0.2-2.3 keV) and an independent hard-band-selected catalog using multiband detection in a range up to 5 keV. Because our mock data are highly representative of the real eFEDS data, we used the mock catalogs to measure the completeness and purity of the eFEDS catalogs as a function of multiple parameters, such as detection likelihood, flux, and luminosity. These measurements provide a basis for choosing the eFEDS catalog selection thresholds. The mock catalogs (available with this paper) can be used to construct the selection function of active galactic nuclei and galaxy clusters. We investigate the physical properties--such as the stellar mass, SFR, IR luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and hydrogen column density--of MIR galaxies and AGN at $z < 4$ in the 140 deg$^2$ field observed by SRG/eROSITA through the eFEDS survey. By cross-matching the WISE 22 $\mu$m (W4)-detected sample and the eFEDS X-ray point-source catalog, we find that 692 extragalactic objects are detected by eROSITA. We have compiled a multiwavelength dataset. We have also performed (i) an X-ray spectral analysis, (ii) SED fitting using X-CIGALE, (iii) 2D image-decomposition analysis using Subaru HSC images, and (iv) optical spectral fitting with QSFit to investigate the AGN and host-galaxy properties. For 7,088 WISE W4 objects that are undetected by eROSITA, we have performed an X-ray stacking analysis to examine the typical physical properties of these X-ray faint and/or probably obscured objects. We find that (i) 82% of the eFEDS-W4 sources are classified as X-ray AGN with $\log\,L_{\rm X} >$ 42 erg s$^{-1}$; (ii) 67% and 24% of the objects have $\log\,(L_{\rm IR}/L_{\odot}) > 12$ and 13, respectively; (iii) the relationship between $L_{\rm X}$ and the 6 $\mu$m luminosity is consistent with that reported in previous works; and (iv) the relationship between the Eddington ratio and $N_{\rm H}$ for the eFEDS-W4 sample and a comparison with a model prediction from a galaxy-merger simulation indicates that approximately 5% of the eFEDS-W4 sources in our sample are likely to be in an AGN-feedback phase, in which strong radiation pressure from the AGN blows out the surrounding material from the nuclear region. Context: After the successful launch of the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission in July 2019, eROSITA, the soft X-ray instrument aboard SRG, performed scanning observations of a large contiguous field, namely the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), ahead of the planned four-year all-sky survey. eFEDS yielded a large sample of X-ray sources with very rich multi-band photometric and spectroscopic coverage. Aims: We present here the eFEDS Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) catalog and the eROSITA X-ray spectral properties of the eFEDS sources. Methods: Using a Bayesian method, we perform a systematic X-ray spectral analysis for all eFEDS sources. The appropriate model is chosen based on the source classification and the spectral quality, and, in the case of AGN, including the possibility of intrinsic (rest-frame) absorption and/or soft excess emission. Hierarchical Bayesian modeling (HBM) is used to estimate the spectral parameter distribution of the sample. Results: X-ray spectral properties are presented for all eFEDS X-ray sources. There are 21952 candidate AGN, which comprise 79% of the eFEDS sample. Despite a large number of faint sources with low photon counts, our spectral fitting provides meaningful measurements of fluxes, luminosities, and spectral shapes for a majority of the sources. This AGN catalog is dominated by X-ray unobscured sources, with an obscured (logNH>21.5) fraction of 10% derived by HBM. The power-law slope of the catalog can be described by a Gaussian distribution of 1.94+-0.22. Above a photon counts threshold of 500, nine out of 50 AGN have soft excess detected. In this study, we investigate the X-ray properties of WISE J090924.01+000211.1 (WISEJ0909+0002), an extremely luminous infrared (IR) galaxy (ELIRG) at $z_{\rm spec}$= 1.871 in the eROSITA final equatorial depth survey (eFEDS). WISEJ0909+0002 is a WISE 22 $\mu$m source, located in the GAMA-09 field, detected by eROSITA during the performance and verification phase. The corresponding optical spectrum indicates that this object is a type-1 active galactic nucleus (AGN). Observations from eROSITA combined with Chandra and XMM-Newton archival data indicate a very luminous ($L$ (2--10 keV) = ($2.1 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$) unobscured AGN with a power-law photon index of $\Gamma$ = 1.73$_{-0.15}^{+0.16}$, and an absorption hydrogen column density of $\log\,(N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}) < 21.0$. The IR luminosity was estimated to be $L_{\rm IR}$ = (1.79 $\pm$ 0.09) $\times 10^{14}\, L_{\odot}$ from spectral energy distribution modeling based on 22 photometric data (X-ray to far-IR) with X-CIGALE, which confirmed that WISEJ0909+0002 is an ELIRG. A remarkably high $L_{\rm IR}$ despite very low $N_{\rm H}$ would indicate that we are witnessing a short-lived phase in which hydrogen gas along the line of sight is blown outwards, whereas warm and hot dust heated by AGNs still exist. As a consequence of eROSITA all-sky survey, $6.8_{-5.6}^{+16}\times 10^2$ such X-ray bright ELIRGs are expected to be discovered in the entire extragalactic sky ($|b| > 10^\circ$). The discovery of hundreds of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe powered by already grown SMBHs challenges our knowledge of SMBH formation. In particular, investigations of $z>6$ QSOs presenting notable properties can provide unique information on the physics of fast SMBH growth in the early universe. We present the results of follow-up observations of the $z=6.515$ radio-quiet QSO PSO167-13, which is interacting with a close companion galaxy. The PSO167-13 system has been recently proposed to host the first heavily obscured X-ray source at high redshift. We observed PSO167-13 with Chandra/ACIS-S (177 ks), and obtained new spectroscopic observations (7.2 h) with Magellan/FIRE. No significant X-ray emission is detected from the PSO167-13 system, suggesting that the obscured X-ray source previously tentatively detected was either due to a strong background fluctuation or is highly variable. The upper limit (90% confidence level) on the X-ray emission of PSO167-13 ($L_{2-10\,\mathrm{keV}}<8.3\times10^{43}\,\mathrm{erg s^{-1}}$) is the lowest available for a $z>6$ QSO. The ratio between the X-ray and UV luminosity of $\alpha_{ox}<-1.95$ makes PSO167-13 a strong outlier from the $\alpha_{ox}-L_{UV}$ and $L_X-L_{\mathrm{bol}}$ relations. In particular, its X-ray emission is $>6$ times weaker than the expectation based on its UV luminosity. The new Magellan/FIRE spectrum of PSO167-13 is strongly affected by the unfavorable sky conditions, but the tentatively detected C IV and Mg II emission lines appear strongly blueshifted. The most plausible explanations for the X-ray weakness of PSO167-13 are intrinsic weakness or small-scale absorption by Compton-thick material. The possible strong blueshift of its emission lines hints at the presence of nuclear winds, which could be related to its X-ray weakness., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A

We searched for high-z quasars within the X-ray source population detected in the contiguous $\sim 140^2$ eFEDS field observed by eROSITA during the performance verification phase. We collected the available spectroscopic information in the field, including the sample of all currently known optically selected z>5.5 quasars and cross-matched secure Legacy DR8 counterparts of eROSITA-detected X-ray point-like sources with this spectroscopic sample. We report the X-ray detection of an eROSITA source securely matched to the well-known quasar SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 (z=5.81). The soft X-ray flux of the source derived from eROSITA is consistent with previous Chandra observations. In addition, we report the detection of the quasar with LOFAR at 145 MHz and ASKAP at 888 MHz. The reported flux densities confirm a spectral flattening at lower frequencies in the emission of the radio core, indicating that the quasar could be a (sub-) gigahertz peaked spectrum source. The inferred spectral shape and the parsec-scale radio morphology of SDSS J083643.85+005453.3 suggest that it is in an early stage of its evolution into a large-scale radio source or confined in a dense environment. We find no indications for a strong jet contribution to the X-ray emission of the quasar, which is therefore likely to be linked to accretion processes. The detection of this source allows us to place the first constraints on the XLF at z>5.5 based on a secure spectroscopic redshift. Compared to extrapolations from lower-redshift observations, this favours a relatively flat slope for the XLF at $z\sim 6$ beyond $L_*$. The population of X-ray luminous AGNs at high redshift may be larger than previously thought. From our XLF constraints, we make the conservative prediction that eROSITA will detect $\sim 90$ X-ray luminous AGNs at redshifts 5.7

Feedback-driven winds from star formation or active galactic nuclei might be a relevant channel for the abrupt quenching star formation in massive galaxies. However, both observations and simulations support the idea that these processes are non-conflictingly co-evolving and self-regulating. Furthermore, evidence of disruptive events that are capable of fast quenching is rare, and constraints on their statistical prevalence are lacking. Here we present a massive starburst galaxy at z=1.4 which is ejecting $46 \pm 13$\% of its molecular gas mass at a startling rate of $\gtrsim 10,000$ M$_{\odot}{\rm yr}^{-1}$. A broad component that is red-shifted from the galaxy emission is detected in four (low- and high-J) CO and [CI] transitions and in the ionized phase, which ensures a robust estimate of the expelled gas mass. The implied statistics suggest that similar events are potentially a major star-formation quenching channel. However, our observations provide compelling evidence that this is not a feedback-driven wind, but rather material from a merger that has been probably tidally ejected. We present a procedure to constrain the redshifts of obscured ($N_H > 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) based on low-count statistics X-ray spectra, which can be adopted when photometric and/or spectroscopic redshifts are unavailable or difficult to obtain. We selected a sample of 54 obscured AGN candidates on the basis of their X-ray hardness ratio, $HR>-0.1$, in the Chandra deep field ($\sim$479 ks, 335 arcmin$^2$) around the $z=6.3$ QSO SDSS J1030+0524. The sample has a median value of $\approx80$ net counts in the 0.5-7 keV energy band. We estimate reliable X-ray redshift solutions taking advantage of the main features in obscured AGN spectra, like the Fe 6.4 keV K$\mathrm{\alpha}$ emission line, the 7.1 keV Fe absorption edge and the photoelectric absorption cut-off. The significance of such features is investigated through spectral simulations, and the derived X-ray redshift solutions are then compared with photometric redshifts. Both photometric and X-ray redshifts are derived for 33 sources. When multiple solutions are derived by any method, we find that combining the redshift solutions of the two techniques improves the rms by a factor of two. Using our redshift estimates ($0.1\lesssim z \lesssim 4$), we derived absorbing column densities in the range $\sim 10^{22}-10^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$ and absorption-corrected, 2-10 keV rest-frame luminosities between $\sim 10^{42}$ and $10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$, with median values of $N_H = 1.7 \times 10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and $L_{\mathrm{2-10\, keV}} = 8.3\times10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, respectively. Our results suggest that the adopted procedure can be applied to current and future X-ray surveys, for sources detected only in the X-rays or that have uncertain photometric or single-line spectroscopic redshifts., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the quadruply lensed z=1.51 quasar HS 0810+2554 which provide useful insight on the kinematics and morphology of the CO molecular gas and the ~2 mm continuum emission in the quasar host galaxy. Lens modeling of the mm-continuum and the spectrally integrated CO(3-2) images indicates that the source of the mm-continuum has an eccentricity of e~0.9 with a size of ~1.6 kpc and the source of line emission has an eccentricity of e~0.7 with a size of ~1 kpc. The spatially integrated emission of the CO(2-1) and CO(3-2) lines shows a triple peak structure with the outer peaks separated by Dv_21 = 220 +\- 19 km s^-1 and Dv_32 = 245 +/- 28 km s^-1, respectively, suggesting the presence of rotating molecular CO line emitting gas. Lensing inversion of the high spatial resolution images confirms the presence of rotation of the line emitting gas. Assuming a conversion factor of alpha_CO = 0.8 M_solar (K km s^-1 pc^2)^-1 we find the molecular gas mass of HS 0810+2554 to be M _ Mol = [(5.2 +/- 1.5)/mu_32] x10^10 M_solar, where mu_32 is the magnification of the CO(3-2) emission. We report the possible detection, at the 3.0 - 4.7 sigma confidence level, of shifted CO(3-2) emission lines of high-velocity clumps of CO emission with velocities up to 1702 km s^-1. We find that the momentum boost of the large scale molecular wind is below the value predicted for an energy-conserving outflow given the momentum flux observed in the small scale ultrafast outflow., Comment: 17 pages, includes 15 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

State-of-the-art models of massive black hole formation postulate that quasars at $z>6$ reside in extreme peaks of the cosmic density structure in the early universe. Even so, direct observational evidence of these overdensities is elusive, especially on large scales ($\gg$1 Mpc) as the spectroscopic follow-up of $z>6$ galaxies is observationally expensive. Here we present Keck / DEIMOS optical and IRAM / NOEMA millimeter spectroscopy of a $z\sim6$ Lyman-break galaxy candidate originally discovered via broadband selection, at a projected separation of 4.65 physical Mpc (13.94 arcmin) from the luminous $z$=6.308 quasar J1030+0524. This well-studied field presents the strongest indication to date of a large-scale overdensity around a $z>6$ quasar. The Keck observations suggest a $z\sim6.3$ dropout identification of the galaxy. The NOEMA 1.2mm spectrum shows a 3.5$\sigma$ line that, if interpreted as [CII], would place the galaxy at $z$=6.318 (i.e., at a line-of-sight separation of 3.9 comoving Mpc assuming that relative proper motion is negligible). The measured [CII] luminosity is $3\times10^8$ L$_\odot$, in line with expectations for a galaxy with a star formation rate $\sim15$ M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, as inferred from the rest-frame UV photometry. Our combined observations place the galaxy at the same redshift as the quasar, thus strengthening the overdensity scenario for this $z>6$ quasar. X-ray emission from QSOs has been used to assess SMBH accretion properties up to $z$~6. However, at $z>6$ only ~15 QSOs are covered by sensitive X-ray observations, preventing a statistically significant investigation of the X-ray properties of QSOs in the first Gyr of the Universe. We present new Chandra observations of 10 $z>6$ QSOs, selected to have virial black-hole mass estimates from Mg II line spectroscopy. Adding archival X-ray data for an additional 15 $z>6$ QSOs, we investigate the X-ray properties of the QSO population in the first Gyr of the Universe, focusing in particular on the $L_{UV}-L_{X}$ relation, which is traced by the $\alpha_{ox}$ parameter, and the shape of their X-ray spectra. We performed photometric analyses to derive estimates of the X-ray luminosities, and thus the $\alpha_{ox}$ values and bolometric corrections ($K_{bol}=L_{bol}/L_{X}$). We compared the resulting $\alpha_{ox}$ and $K_{bol}$ distributions with the results found for QSO samples at lower redshift. Finally, we performed a basic X-ray spectral analysis of the brightest $z>6$ QSOs to derive their individual photon indices, and joint spectral analysis of the whole sample to estimate the average photon index. We confirm a lack of significant evolution of $\alpha_{ox}$ with redshift, extending the results from previous works up to $z>6$, and the trend of an increasing bolometric correction with increasing luminosity found for QSOs at lower redshifts. The average power-law photon index of our sample ($\Gamma=2.20_{-0.34}^{+0.39}$ and $\Gamma=2.13_{-0.13}^{+0.13}$ for sources with $<30$ and $>30$ net counts, respectively) is slightly steeper than, but still consistent with, typical QSOs at $z=1-6$. All these results point toward a lack of substantial evolution of the inner accretion-disk/hot-corona structure in QSOs from low redshift to $z>6$. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) hosting disk water megamasers are well known to be obscured by large amounts of gas, likely due to the presence along the line of sight of an almost edge-on disky structure orbiting the supermassive black hole. Correcting for the high obscuration is crucial to infer parameters intrinsic to the source, like its luminosity. We present a broadband X-ray spectral analysis of a water megamaser AGN in an early merger (NGC 5765B), combining Chandra and NuSTAR data. NGC 5765B is highly Compton-thick and reflection-dominated, following the general trend among disk megamasers. Combining the exquisite black hole mass from masers with our X-ray spectroscopy, the Eddington ratio of the megamaser is estimated to be in the $2-14\%$ range, and its robustness is confirmed through SED fitting., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures. While theoretical arguments predict that most of the early growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) happened during heavily obscured phases of accretion, current methods used for selecting $z>6$ quasars (QSOs) are strongly biased against obscured QSOs, thus considerably limiting our understanding of accreting SMBHs during the first Gyr of the Universe from an observational point of view. We report the $Chandra$ discovery of the first heavily obscured QSO candidate in the early universe, hosted by a close ($\approx5$ kpc) galaxy pair at $z=6.515$. One of the members is an optically classified type 1 QSO, PSO167-13. The companion galaxy was first detected as a [C II] emitter by ALMA. An X-ray source is significantly ($P=0.9996$) detected by $Chandra$ in the 2-5 keV band, with $<1.14$ net counts in the 0.5-2 keV band, although the current positional uncertainty does not allow a conclusive association with either PSO167-13 or its companion galaxy. From X-ray photometry and hardness-ratio arguments, we estimated an obscuring column density of $N_H>2\times10^{24}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ and $N_H>6\times10^{23}\,\mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at $68\%$ and $90\%$ confidence levels, respectively. Thus, regardless of which of the two galaxies is associated with the X-ray emission, this source is the first heavily obscured QSO candidate at $z>6$., Comment: A&A Letters, accepted

The discoveries made over the past 20 years by Chandra and XMM-Newton surveys in conjunction with multiwavelength imaging and spectroscopic data available in the same fields have significantly changed the view of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) and galaxy connection. These discoveries have opened up several exciting questions that are beyond the capabilities of current X-ray telescopes and will need to be addressed by observatories in the next two decades. As new observatories peer into the early Universe, we will begin to understand the physics and demographics of SMBH infancy (at $z>6$) and investigate the influence of their accretion on the formation of the first galaxies ($\S$ 2.1). The characterisation of galaxy-scale outflows in terms of their multi-phase nature, amount, and effects of flowing material is crucial to place constraints on models of galaxy evolution. This study can proceed only with the detailed investigation of individual targets. We present a spatially resolved spectroscopic optical data analysis of Mkn 848, a complex system consisting of two merging galaxies at z~0.04 that are separated 7.5 kpc (projected distance). Motivated by the presence of a multi-phase outflow in the north-west system revealed by the SDSS integrated spectrum, we analysed the publicly available MaNGA data, which cover almost the entire merging system, to study the physical properties of cool and warm gas in detail. Galaxy-wide outflowing gas in multiple phases is revealed for the first time in the two merging galaxies. We also detect spatially resolved resonant NaID emission associated with the outflows. The derived outflow energetics may be consistent with a scenario in which both winds are accelerated by stellar processes and AGN activity, although we favour an AGN origin given the high outflow velocities and the ionisation conditions observed in the outflow regions. Deeper observations are required, however, to better constrain the nature of these multi-phase outflows. Outflow energetics in the north-west system are strongly different between the ionised and atomic gas components, the latter of which is associated with mass outflow rate and kinetic and momentum powers that are 1-2 dex higher; those associated with the south-east galaxy are instead similar. Strong kp-scale outflows are revealed in an ongoing merger system, suggesting that feedback can potentially impact the host galaxy even in the early merger phases. We present the X-UDS survey, a set of wide and deep Chandra observations of the Subaru-XMM Deep/UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (SXDS/UDS) field. The survey consists of 25 observations that cover a total area of 0.33 deg$^{2}$. The observations are combined to provide a nominal depth of ~600 ksec in the central 100 arcmin$^{2}$ region of the field that has been imaged with Hubble/WFC3 by the CANDELS survey and $\sim$200 ksec in the remainder of the field. In this paper, we outline the survey's scientific goals, describe our observing strategy, and detail our data reduction and point source detection algorithms. Our analysis has resulted in a total of 868 band-merged point sources detected with a false-positive Poisson probability of $<1\times10^{-4}$. In addition, we present the results of an X-ray spectral analysis and provide best-fitting neutral hydrogen column densities, $N_{\rm H}$, as well as a sample of 51 Compton-thick active galactic nucleus candidates. Using this sample, we find the intrinsic Compton-thick fraction to be 30-35% over a wide range in redshift ($z=0.1-3$), suggesting the obscured fraction does not evolve very strongly with epoch. However, if we assume that the Compton-thick fraction is dependent on luminosity, as is seen for Compton-thin sources, then our results are consistent with a rise in the obscured fraction out to $z\sim3$. Finally, an examination of the host morphologies of our Compton-thick candidates shows a high fraction of morphological disturbances, in agreement with our previous results. Using the X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the XMM-XXL north survey and the SDSS Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) spectroscopic follow-up of them, we compare the properties of X-ray unobscured and obscured broad-line AGN (BLAGN1 and BLAGN2; $N_\textrm{H}$below and above $10^{21.5}$ cm$^{-2}$), including their X-ray luminosity $L_X$, black hole mass, Eddington ratio $\lambda_{\textrm{Edd}}$, optical continuum and line features. We find that BLAGN2 have systematically larger broad line widths and hence apparently higher (lower) $M_{\textrm{BH}}$ ($\lambda_{\textrm{Edd}}$) than BLAGN1. We also find that the X-ray obscuration in BLAGN tends to coincide with optical dust extinction, which is optically thinner than that in narrow-line AGN (NLAGN) and likely partial-covering to the broad line region. All the results can be explained in the framework of a multi-component, clumpy torus model by interpreting BLAGN2 as an intermediate type between BLAGN1 and NLAGN in terms of an intermediate inclination angle., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, published in MNRAS

The active galaxy NGC 1275 lies at the center of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, being an archetypal BH-galaxy system that is supposed to fit well with the M_BH-host scaling relations obtained for quiescent galaxies. Since it harbours an obscured AGN, only recently our group has been able to estimate its black hole mass. Here our aim is to pinpoint NGC 1275 on the less dispersed scaling relations, namely the M_BH-sigma_star and M_BH-L_bul planes. Starting from our previous work Ricci et al. 2017b, we estimate that NGC 1275 falls well outside the intrinsic dispersion of the M_BH-sigma_star plane being ~1.2 dex (in black hole mass) displaced with respect to the scaling relations. We then perform a 2D morphological decomposition analysis on Spitzer/IRAC images at 3.6 mic and find that, beyond the bright compact nucleus that dominates the central emission, NGC 1275 follows a de Vaucouleurs profile with no sign of significant star formation nor clear merger remnants. We use the new catalogue by Laigle et al. (2016) to provide a full census of VLA-COSMOS radio sources. We identify 90% of such sources and sub-divide them into AGN and star-forming galaxies on the basis of their radio luminosity. The AGN sample is COMPLETE with respect to radio selection at all z<3.5. Out of 704 AGN, 272 have a counterpart in the Herschel maps. By exploiting the better statistics of the new sample, we confirm the results of Magliocchetti et al. (2014): the probability for a radio-selected AGN to be detected at FIR wavelengths is both a function of radio luminosity and redshift, whereby powerful sources are more likely FIR emitters at earlier epochs. Such an emission is due to star-forming processes within the host galaxy. FIR emitters and non-FIR emitters only differentiate in the z<1 universe. At higher redshifts they are indistinguishable from each other, as there is no difference between FIR-emitting AGN and star-forming galaxies. Lastly, we focus on radio AGN which show AGN emission at other wavelengths. We find that MIR emission is mainly associated with ongoing star-formation and with sources which are smaller, younger and more radio luminous than the average parent population. X-ray emitters instead preferentially appear in more massive and older galaxies. We can therefore envisage an evolutionary track whereby the first phase of a radio-active AGN and of its host galaxy is associated with MIR emission, while at later stages the source becomes only active at radio wavelengths and possibly also in the X-ray., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, to appear in MNRAS

We present results of a ground-based near-infrared campaign with Palomar TripleSpec, Keck NIRSPEC, and Gemini GNIRS to target two samples of reddened active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates from the 31 deg$^2$ Stripe 82 X-ray survey. One sample, which is $\sim$89\% complete to $K<16$ (Vega), consists of eight confirmed AGNs, four of which were identified with our follow-up program, and is selected to have red $R-K$ colors ($>4$, Vega). The fainter sample ($K>17$, Vega) represents a pilot program to follow-up four sources from a parent sample of 34 that are not detected in the single-epoch SDSS catalog and have {\it WISE} quasar colors. All twelve sources are broad-line AGNs (at least one permitted emission line has a FWHM exceeding 1300 km s$^{-1}$) and span a redshift range $0.59 < z < 2.5$. Half the ($R-K$)-selected AGNs have features in their spectra suggestive of outflows. When comparing these sources to a matched sample of blue Type 1 AGNs, we find the reddened AGNs are more distant ($z > 0.5$) and a greater percentage have high X-ray luminosities ($L_{\rm X,full} > 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$). Such outflows and high luminosities may be consistent with the paradigm that reddened broad-line AGNs represent a transitory phase in AGN evolution as described by the major merger model for black hole growth. Results from our pilot program demonstrate proof-of-concept that our selection technique is successful in discovering reddened quasars at $z > 1$ missed by optical surveys., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figures, 9 tables. Galaxy-scale outflows are nowadays observed in many active galactic nuclei (AGNs); however, their characterisation in terms of (multi-) phase nature, amount of flowing material, effects on the host galaxy, is still unsettled. In particular, ionized gas mass outflow rate and related energetics are still affected by many sources of uncertainties. In this respect, outflowing gas plasma conditions, being largely unknown, play a crucial role. Taking advantage of the spectroscopic analysis results we obtained studying the X-ray/SDSS sample of 563 AGNs at z $<0.8$ presented in our companion paper, we analyse stacked spectra and sub-samples of sources with high signal-to-noise temperature- and density-sensitive emission lines to derive the plasma properties of the outflowing ionized gas component. For these sources, we also study in detail various diagnostic diagrams to infer information about outflowing gas ionization mechanisms. We derive, for the first time, median values for electron temperature and density of outflowing gas from medium-size samples ($\sim 30$ targets) and stacked spectra of AGNs. Evidences of shock excitation are found for outflowing gas. We measure electron temperatures of the order of $\sim 1.7\times10^4$ K and densities of $\sim 1200$ cm$^{-3}$ for faint and moderately luminous AGNs (intrinsic X-ray luminosity $40.5

We study the physical and dynamical properties of the ionized gas in the prototypical HII galaxy Henize 2-10 using MUSE integral field spectroscopy. The large scale dynamics is dominated by extended outflowing bubbles, probably the results of massive gas ejection from the central star forming regions. We derive a mass outflow rate dMout/dt~0.30 Msun/yr, corresponding to mass loading factor eta~0.4, in range with similar measurements in local LIRGs. Such a massive outflow has a total kinetic energy that is sustainable by the stellar winds and Supernova Remnants expected in the galaxy. We use classical emission line diagnostic to study the dust extinction, electron density and ionization conditions all across the galaxy, confirming the extreme nature of the highly star forming knots in the core of the galaxy, which show high density and high ionization parameter. We measure the gas phase metallicity in the galaxy taking into account the strong variation of the ionization parameter, finding that the external parts of the galaxy have abundances as low as 12 + log(O/H)~8.3, while the central star forming knots are highly enriched with super solar metallicity. We find no sign of AGN ionization in the galaxy, despite the recent claim of the presence of a super massive active Black Hole in the core of He~2-10. We therefore reanalyze the X-ray data that were used to propose the presence of the AGN, but we conclude that the observed X-ray emission can be better explained with sources of a different nature, such as a Supernova Remnant., Comment: 11 pages, 8 Figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

Multi-phase fast, massive outflows have been postulated to play a crucial role in galaxy evolution. The aim of this work is to constrain the nature and the fraction of outflowing gas in AGNs, as well as the nuclear conditions possibly at the origin of such phenomena. We present a large spectroscopic sample of X-ray detected SDSS AGNs at z <0.8. X-ray and optical flux ratio diagnostics are used to select the sample. Physical and kinematic characterisation are derived re-analysing optical (and X-ray) spectra. We derive the incidence of ionised (~40%) and atomic (< 1%) outflows covering a wide range of AGN bolometric luminosity, from 10^42 to 10^46 erg/s. We also derive bolometric luminosities and X-ray bolometric corrections to test whether the presence of outflows is associated with an X-ray loudness, as suggested by our recent results obtained studying high-z QSOs. We study the relations between the outflow velocity inferred from [O III] kinematic analysis and different AGN power tracers, such as black hole mass (M_BH), [O III] and X-ray luminosity. We show a well defined positive trend between outflow velocity and L_X, for the first time over a range of 5 order of magnitudes. Overall, we find that in the QSO-luminosity regime and at M_BH>10^8 Msun the fraction of AGNs with outflows becomes >50%. Finally, we discuss our results about X-ray bolometric corrections and outflow incidence in cold and ionised phases in the context of an evolutionary sequence allowing two distinct stages for the feedback phase: an initial stage characterized by X-ray/optical obscured AGNs in which the atomic gas is still present in the ISM and the outflow processes involve all the gas components, and a later stage associated with unobscured AGNs, which line of sight has been cleaned and the cold components have been heated or exhausted., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the Data Release 12 Quasar catalog (DR12Q) from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of the SDSS-III. This catalog includes all SDSS-III/BOSS objects that were spectroscopically targeted as quasar candidates during the full survey and that are confirmed as quasars via visual inspection of the spectra, have luminosities Mi[z=2]<-20.5 (in a LCDM cosmology with H_0 = 70 km/s/Mpc, Omega_M = 0.3, and Omega _L=0.7), and either display at least one emission line with a full width at half maximum (FWHM)larger than 500 km/s or, if not, have interesting/complex absorption features. The catalog also includes previously known quasars (mostly from SDSS-I and II) that were reobserved by BOSS. The catalog contains 297,301 quasars detected over 9,376 square degrees with robust identification and redshift measured by a combination of principal component eigenspectra. The number of quasars with z>2.15 is about an order of magnitude greater than the number of z>2.15 quasars known prior to BOSS. Redshifts and FWHMs are provided for the strongest emission lines (CIV, CIII], MgII). The catalog identifies 29,580 broad absorption line quasars and lists their characteristics. For each object, the catalog presents five-band (u, g, r, i, z) CCD-based photometry together with some information on the optical morphology and the selection criteria. When available, the catalog also provides information on the optical variability of quasars using SDSS and PTF multi-epoch photometry. The catalog also contains X-ray, ultraviolet, near-infrared, and radio emission properties of the quasars, when available, from other large-area surveys. In this paper we describe and publicly release a catalogue consisting of 8445 point-like X-ray sources detected in the XMM-XXL north survey. For the 2512 AGN which have reliable spectroscopy, we present the X-ray spectral fitting which has been computed with a Bayesian approach. We have also applied an X-ray spectral stacking method to different sub-samples. We confirm the well-known Iwasawa-Taniguchi effect in our luminosity-redshift sub-samples, and argue that such an effect is due to a decrease in the covering factor of a distant obscuring torus with increasing X-ray luminosity. By comparing the distribution of the reflection fraction, the ratio of the normalization of the reflected component to the direct radiation, we find that the low-luminosity, low-redshift sub-sample had systematically higher reflection fraction values than the high-redshift, high-luminosity one. On the other hand, no significant difference is found between samples having similar luminosity but different redshift, suggesting that the structure of the torus does not evolve strongly with redshift. Contrary to previous works, we do not find evidence for an increasing photon index at high Eddington ratio. This may be an indication that the structure of the accretion disc changes as the Eddington ratio approaches unity. Comparing our X-ray spectral analysis results with the optical spectral classification, we find that $\sim20$ per cent of optical type-1 AGN show an X-ray absorbing column density higher than $10^{21.5}\,\rm{cm^{-2}}$, and about 50 per cent of type-2 AGN have an X-ray absorbing column density less than $10^{21.5}\,\rm{cm^{-2}}$. We suggest that the excess X-ray absorption shown in the high-luminosity optical type-1 AGN can be due to small-scale dust-free gas within (or close to) the broad line region, while in the low-luminosity ones it can be due to a clumpy torus with a large covering factor., Comment: published in MNRAS. This paper presents a survey of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) with optical spectroscopic follow-up in a $\sim 18\, \rm{deg^2}$ area of the equatorial XMM-XXL north field. A sample of 8445 point-like X-ray sources detected by XMM-Newton above a limiting flux of $F_{\rm 0.5-10\, keV} > 10^{-15} \rm\,erg\, cm^{-2}\, s^{-1}$ was matched to optical (SDSS) and infrared (WISE) counterparts. We followed up 3042 sources brighter than $r=22.5$ mag with the SDSS BOSS spectrograph. The spectra yielded a reliable redshift measurement for 2578 AGN in the redshift range $z=0.02-5.0$, with $0.5-2\rm\, keV$ luminosities ranging from $10^{39}-10^{46}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$. This is currently the largest published spectroscopic sample of X-ray selected AGN in a contiguous area. The BOSS spectra of AGN candidates show a bimodal distribution of optical line widths allowing a separation between broad- and narrow-emission line AGN. The former dominate our sample (70 per cent) due to the relatively bright X-ray flux limit and the optical BOSS magnitude limit. We classify the narrow emission line objects (22 per cent of full sample) using standard BPT diagnostics: the majority have line ratios indicating the dominant source of ionization is the AGN. A small number (8 per cent of full sample) exhibit the typical narrow line ratios of star-forming galaxies, or only have absorption lines in their spectra. We term the latter two classes "elusive'' AGN. We also compare X-ray, optical and infrared color AGN selections in this field. X-ray observations reveal, the largest number of AGN. The overlap between the selections, which is a strong function of the imaging depth in a given band, is also remarkably small. We show using spectral stacking that a large fraction of the X-ray AGN would not be selectable via optical or IR colours due to host galaxy contamination., Comment: 26 pages, 21 figures. Capitalizing on the all-sky coverage of {\it WISE}, and the 35\% and 50\% sky coverage from SDSS and Pan-STARRS, respectively, we explore the efficacy of $m_{R}$ (optical) - $m_{3.4 \mu m}$ (mid-infrared), hereafter $R-W1$, as a color diagnostic to identify obscured supermassive black hole accretion in wide-area X-ray surveys. We use the $\sim$16.5 deg$^2$ Stripe 82 X-ray survey data as a test-bed to compare $R-W1$ with $R-K$, an oft-used obscured AGN selection criterion, and examine where different classes of objects lie in this parameter space. Most stars follow a well-defined path in $R-K$ vs. $R-W1$ space. We demonstrate that optically normal galaxies hosting X-ray AGN at redshifts $0.54$ color-cut, while they typically are not selected as AGN based on their $W1-W2$ colors. Additionally, different observed X-ray luminosity bins favor different regions in $R-W1$ parameter space: moderate luminosity AGN ($10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1} < L_{\rm 0.5-10 keV} < 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$) tend to have red colors while the highest luminosity AGN ($L_{\rm 0.5-10 keV} > 10^{45}$ erg s$^{-1}$) have bluer colors; higher spectroscopic completeness of the Stripe 82X sample is needed to determine whether this is a selection effect or an intrinsic property. Finally, we parameterize X-ray obscuration of Stripe 82X AGN by calculating their hardness ratios (HRs) and find no clear trends between HR and optical reddening. We release the next installment of the Stripe 82 X-ray survey point-source catalog, which currently covers 31.3 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 Legacy field. In total, 6181 unique X-ray sources are significantly detected with {\it XMM-Newton} ($>5\sigma$) and {\it Chandra} ($>4.5\sigma$). This catalog release includes data from {\it XMM-Newton} cycle AO 13, which approximately doubled the Stripe 82X survey area. The flux limits of the Stripe 82X survey are $8.7\times10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, $4.7\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, and $2.1\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the soft (0.5-2 keV), hard (2-10 keV), and full bands (0.5-10 keV), respectively, with approximate half-area survey flux limits of $5.4\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, $2.9\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, and $1.7\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We matched the X-ray source lists to available multi-wavelength catalogs, including updated matches to the previous release of the Stripe 82X survey; 88\% of the sample is matched to a multi-wavelength counterpart. Due to the wide area of Stripe 82X and rich ancillary multi-wavelength data, including coadded SDSS photometry, mid-infrared {\it WISE} coverage, near-infrared coverage from UKIDSS and VHS, ultraviolet coverage from {\it GALEX}, radio coverage from FIRST, and far-infrared coverage from {\it Herschel}, as well as existing $\sim$30\% optical spectroscopic completeness, we are beginning to uncover rare objects, such as obscured high-luminosity AGN at high-redshift. In the last decade, using single epoch (SE) virial based spectroscopic optical observations, it has been possible to measure the black hole (BH) mass on large type 1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) samples. However this kind of measurements can not be applied on those obscured type 2 and/or low luminosity AGN where the nuclear component does not dominate in the optical. We have derived new SE relationships, based on the FWHM and luminosity of the broad line region component of the Pabeta emission line and/or the hard X-ray luminosity in the 14-195 keV band, which have the prospect of better working with low luminosity or obscured AGN. The SE relationships have been calibrated in the 10^5-10^9 M_sol mass range, using a sample of AGN whose BH masses have been previously measured using reverberation mapping techniques. Our tightest relationship between the reverberation-based BH mass and the SE virial product has an intrinsic spread of 0.20 dex. Thanks to these SE relations, in agreement with previous estimates, we have measured a BH mass of M_BH =1.7^+1.3_-0.7 X 10^5 M_sol for the low luminosity, type 1, AGN NGC 4395 (one of the smallest active galactic BH known). We also measured, for the first time, a BH mass of M_BH = 1.5^+1.1_-0.6 X 10^7 M_sol for the Seyfert 2 galaxy MCG -01-24-012., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRAS

We present photometric redshifts and associated probability distributions for all detected sources in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS). The work makes use of the most up-to-date data from the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Legacy Survey (CANDELS) and the Taiwan ECDFS Near-Infrared Survey (TENIS) in addition to other data. We also revisit multi-wavelength counterparts for published X-ray sources from the 4Ms-CDFS and 250ks-ECDFS surveys, finding reliable counterparts for 1207 out of 1259 sources ($\sim 96\%$). Data used for photometric redshifts include intermediate-band photometry deblended using the TFIT method, which is used for the first time in this work. Photometric redshifts for X-ray source counterparts are based on a new library of AGN/galaxy hybrid templates appropriate for the faint X-ray population in the CDFS. Photometric redshift accuracy for normal galaxies is 0.010 and for X-ray sources is 0.014, and outlier fractions are $4\%$ and $5.4\%$ respectively. The results within the CANDELS coverage area are even better as demonstrated both by spectroscopic comparison and by galaxy-pair statistics. Intermediate-band photometry, even if shallow, is valuable when combined with deep broad-band photometry.
