We have developed a near-infrared spectrometer designed to measure the absolute intensity of the solar 854.2 nm Ca II Fraunhofer line, scattered by interplanetary dust, in the zodiacal light (ZL) spectrum. Based on the known equivalent line width in the solar spectrum, this measurement can derive the zodiacal brightness, testing models of the ZL based on morphology that are used to determine the extragalactic background light in absolute photometry measurements. The spectrometer is based on a simple high-resolution tipped filter placed in front of a compact camera with wide-field refractive optics to provide the large optical throughput and high sensitivity required for rocket-borne observations. We discuss the instrument requirements for an accurate measurement of the absolute ZL brightness, the measured laboratory characterization, and the instrument performance in flight. © 2013. Objective To isolate Trichostrongylus vitrinus from naturally-acquired mixed trichostrongylid infections (predominantly Trichostrongylus spp. and Teladorsagia circumcincta) in sheep using differential larval development temperatures and the anatomical location of adults. Methods Faeces were collected from ewes with mixed, naturally acquired trichostrongylid infection, and incubated at low temperatures (4°C or 8°C) for 20-68 days depending on temperature. Harvested infective larvae were passaged through worm-free lambs, from which the first 5 m of small intestine was collected and adult worms recovered. Purity of infection with T. vitrinus was assessed by examination of spicules on 100 adult male worms. Eggs of recovered adult female worms were cultured at 25°C and harvested larvae were re-passaged through worm-free lambs. Results Low temperature incubation (≤8°C) successfully exploited variation in the developmental temperature required by pre-parasitic stages of small intestinal nematodes, allowing T. vitrinus to develop while others did not. Differential organ harvest from infected sheep allowed isolation of T. vitrinus from other gastrointestinal nematodes, with amplification of pure T. vitrinus achieved by passage through a further generation of lambs. Conclusion A successful method for the isolation of pure T. vitrinus from mixed infections is described. The resulting pure strain of T. vitrinus has been amplified and is held by two institutions for use in research (CSIRO reference SARDI 2011 strain). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both classroom instruction and lexical database development stand to benefit from applied research on sign language, which takes into consideration American Sign Language rules, pedagogical issues, and teacher characteristics. In this study of technical science signs, teachers' experience with signing and, especially, knowledge of content, were found to be essential for the identification of signs appropriate for instruction. The results of this study also indicate a need for a systematic approach to examine both sign selection and its impact on learning by deaf students. Recommendations are made for the development of lexical databases and areas of research for optimizing the use of sign language in instruction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF), a 25-item rating scale, was developed to identify the function(s) of maladaptive behavior in individuals with developmental disabilities. The authors adapted it for use with individuals with serious mental illness who engage in maladaptive behavior and assessed the psychometric characteristics of the new scale (Questions About Behavioral Function in Mental Illness; QABF-MI) in a sample of 135 adults with serious mental illness from three inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Staff most familiar with each person rated each item on a 5-point Likert-type rating scale, and the ratings were subjected to a number of psychometric analyses. The results of factor analyses provided a conceptually meaningful five-factor solution: physical discomfort, social attention, tangible reinforcement, escape, and nonsocial reinforcement. Congruence between the five factors derived with the QABF-MI and the corresponding factors in the original QABF was perfect. The results indicated that the QABF-MI has robust psychometric properties and may be useful as a screening tool for determining the nature of the variables that maintain maladaptive behavior exhibited by individuals with serious mental illness. A review of interference effects in concurrent temporal/nontemporal dual-task studies suggests that prospective timing may be related to executive cognitive functions. Executive processes play a supervisory role in behavior by controlling attention, coordinating information, and scheduling actions. In the present research, a timing task was paired with an established executive task in a dual-task paradigm. The timing task required subjects t o generate a series o f 5-sec temporal productions,and the executive task was random number generation. These tasks were performed both separately and concurrently. Comparisons of single-task and dual-task conditions showed that (1) the randomization task interfered with timing by making temporal productions more variable and longer and (2) concurrent timing disrupted randomization performance by making responses less random. This pattern of bidirectional interference supports the idea that timing relies on the same attentional resources used by other executive-level tasks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Theophylline and antipyrine disposition has been compared in smoking epileptic patients, non-smoking epileptic patients and non-smoking healthy volunteers. Although clear differences in drug clearance and half-life were evident as a result of anticonvulsant drug therapy, no effect of smoking was discernible. Thus, additive effects from induction of the hepatic microsomal monooxygenase system in man by anticonvulsant drugs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (in cigarette smoke) were not evident. Pinkeye is a highly contagious disease of goats with different aetiologies. Surveys in Lao PDR have identified eye lesions typical of pinkeye as a common condition, however, this has not been confirmed diagnostically, and the responsible pathogens have not been identified. A matched case-control study was implemented in 70 goat holdings from Savannakhet province, Lao PDR, to detect agents causing pinkeye and conduct phylogenetic analysis of the identified pathogens. Fifty eye swabs from goats with infected eyes (cases) and 50 paired samples from unaffected cohorts (controls) were collected from 25 holdings. Samples were tested using quantitative PCR assays targeting known pinkeye pathogens at the genus and species levels. The prevalence of pathogens in case and control goats was as follows: Mycoplasma conjunctivae (94% and 74% respectively, P = 0.006, OR = 5.5), Chlamydia pecorum (4%, 10%), Moraxella ovis (30%, 30%), Moraxella bovis (0%, 0%) and Moraxella bovoculi (0%, 0%). M. conjunctivae was present in a high proportion of goats in both groups revealing that Lao goats are carriers of M. conjunctivae. However, the mean log 10 genome copy number/µL of DNA extract was significantly higher in case goats than control goats (P < 0.05). Thus, M. conjunctivae is likely the principal causative agent of pinkeye in Lao goats with carrier status converting to clinical infection following corneal damage or other causative factors. M. conjunctivae detected in samples from different goats and districts showed low genetic diversity. Maintaining genetic diversity and variation in livestock populations is critical for natural and artificial selection promoting genetic improvement while avoiding problems due to inbreeding. In Laos, there are concerns that there has been a decline in genetic diversity and a rise in inbreeding among native goats in their village-based smallholder system. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity of Lao native goats in Phin, Songkhone and Sepon districts in Central Laos for the first time using Illumina's Goat SNP50 BeadChip. We also explored the genetic relationships between Lao goats with 163 global goat populations from 36 countries. Our results revealled a close genetic relationship between Lao native goats and Chinese, Mongolian and Pakistani goats, sharing ancestries with Guangfen, Jining Grey and Luoping Yellow breeds (China) and Teddi goats (Pakistan). The observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity were 0.292 and 0.303 (Laos), 0.288 and 0.288 (Sepon), 0.299 and 0.308 (Phin) and 0.289 and 0.305 (Songkhone), respectively. There was low to moderate genetic differentiation (F ST : 0.011-0.043) and negligible inbreeding coefficients (F IS : -0.001 to 0.052) between goat districts. The runs of homozygosity (ROH) had an average length of 5.92-6.85 Mb, with short ROH segments (1-5 Mb length) being the most prevalent (66.34%). Longer ROH segments (20-40 and >40 Mb length categories) were less common, comprising only 4.81% and 1.01%, respectively. Lao goats exhibit moderate genetic diversity, low-inbreeding levels and adequate effective population size. Oriental theileriosis, a disease primarily impacting cattle is caused by an apicomplexan hemoprotozoan parasite, Theileria orientalis . It has now become established in the Australasia region. The organism was long considered a benign cause of persistent infections; however, an increase in clinical outbreaks since 2006 in the eastern Australian states and New Zealand was associated with the identification of the pathogenic Ikeda (Type 2) and Chitose (Type 1) genotypes. Unlike the pathogenic T. parva and T. annulate , which target leucocytes, clinical manifestation with T. orientalis is due to its effects on erythrocytes, with the infection sometimes designated as Theileria associated bovine anemia (TABA). In Australia and New Zealand, the tick Haemaphysalis longicornis is the principal vector, though other Haemaphysalis species are also likely vectors. The endemic status of infection with pathogenic genotypes in areas with low or absent tick populations is an apparent paradox that may be attributable to alternative modes of transmission, such as mechanical transmission by hematophagous insects (lice, mosquitoes, and biting flies), vertical transmission, and transmission via iatrogenic means. This review addresses the evidence for the different modes of transmission of T. orientalis with particular focus on the reported and potential vectors in Australasia.

Mass vaccination against infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) in drinking water can result in variable initial vaccine take. Partial initial vaccine coverage of 20% with an Australian ILT vaccine (A20) previously resulted in significant protection against virulent ILTV challenge. This follow-up study used the international Serva ILT vaccine strain in a factorial design testing four levels of vaccination coverage (0%, 10%, 20%, or 100% of chicks eye-drop vaccinated with the live vaccine at 7 days of age) and three levels of ILTV challenge (no challenge or challenge at 7 or 21 days postvaccination [DPV]). The increase in ILTV load in choanal cleft swabs detected by qPCR after challenge was significantly reduced by 20% and 100% but not by 10% vaccination coverage. Vaccination reduced weight gain in unchallenged birds. Daily weight gain of birds was not affected by ILTV challenge at 7 DPV in any group, but following challenge at 21 DPV, it was significantly reduced in unvaccinated and 10% vaccinated groups relative to 20% and 100% vaccinated groups. Vaccination of 20% of the chickens provided substantial but incomplete protection (protective index range 44%-70%) against the severity of clinical signs and mortality following challenge while 10% vaccination coverage provided limited or no protection. Clinical signs were more severe and appeared earlier following challenge at 21 DPV than at 7 DPV. Within the vaccination treatments, eye-drop-vaccinated birds were better protected than their in-contact cohorts. In conclusion, partial vaccination of 20%, but not 10% of chickens, induced substantial protection against subsequent challenge. However, the attendant risks of reduced protection against early challenge and the possible reversion to virulence of vaccine virus when transmitted to unvaccinated chickens make it essential that 100% initial vaccine take be the goal of mass vaccination programs.

Helminth infections have been re-emerging with the growing popularity of free-range and floor-based chicken production systems. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and worm burdens of intestinal helminth infection in cage-free laying chickens in Australia. In an online survey about worm prevalence, a high proportion of respondents reported the detection of Ascaridia galli (77%), followed by tapeworms (69%) and caecal worms (Heterakis gallinarum) (62%), whereas fewer respondents (23%) reported the presence of hair worms (Capillaria spp.) in their flocks. Total worm recovery from 407 laying hens on four farms found that 92.1% of hens harboured one or more helminth parasite with a prevalence of 73 to 100% across farms. Mixed infections were common with 79% of hens harbouring two or more helminth species. The prevalence of nematode species H. gallinarum, A. galli and Capillaria spp. was 87, 82 and 35% respectively. Five cestode species were found with a low individual chicken prevalence (Raillietina tetragona 4.7%, Raillietina echinobothrida 3.2%, Raillietina cesticillus 5.2%, Choanotaenia infundibulum 4.4%, and Hymenolepis cantaniana 4.4%). The hens harboured an average of 71 worms with H. gallinarum having the highest mean burden (45.5 worms/hen) followed by A. galli (22.0 worms/hen), Capillaria spp. (2.7 worms/hen) and cestodes (0.8 worms/hen). The sex ratio (female:male worms) was 1.38:1 for A. galli, and 1.77:1 for H. gallinarum. There was a strong positive correlation between A. galli female worm count and excreta egg count (EECs) (r s  = 0.94, P < 0.0001) and also between total nematode worm count and EEC (r s  = 0.82, P < 0.0001) in individual hens. When investigating intestinal excreta (n = 10) and caecal excreta (n = 10) of 16 chicken flocks the prevalence of infection with ascarid worms in intestinal and caecal excreta was 71 and 78% respectively and 27% prevalence of Capillaria spp. in intestinal excreta with mean EECs of 407, 404, and 18 eggs/g of excreta (EPG), respectively. These results suggest that most chickens kept in free-range or floor production systems are infected with one or more helminth parasite species. Heavy worm infections would likely affect the production performance and welfare of birds with adverse economic impact. Rationale: Historically, sarcoidosis was described as a restrictive lung disease, but several alternative phenotypes of pulmonary function have been observed. Pulmonary function phenotypes in sarcoidosis may represent different clinical and/or molecular phenotypes. Objectives: To characterize the prevalence of different pulmonary function phenotypes in a large and diverse sarcoidosis cohort from a tertiary care referral center. Methods: We identified individuals seen between 2005-2015 with a confirmed diagnosis of sarcoidosis. Data were collected from the first pulmonary function test (PFT) performed at our institution which included spirometry and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (Dl CO ). Demographics and clinical data were collected. Chi-squared analyses and multiple linear regressions were done to assess statistical differences and associations. Global Lung Function Initiative equations were used to calculate percent predicted measurements for spirometry and Dl CO . Results: Of 602 individuals with sarcoidosis, 93% (562) had pulmonary involvement, 64% (385) were female, and 57% (341) were Black. Of those with pulmonary involvement, 56% had abnormal pulmonary function. Lung function impairment phenotypes included: 47% restriction, 22% obstruction, 15% isolated reduction in Dl CO , and 16% combined obstructive restrictive phenotype. Restriction was the most common PFT phenotype among Black individuals (41%), while no lung impairment was most common among White individuals (66%) ( P  < 0.001). Males more frequently had obstruction (19%) compared with females (9%) P  = 0.001, and females had more restriction (30%) compared with males (21%) P  = 0.031. Conclusions: Among individuals with sarcoidosis and pulmonary function impairment, less than half demonstrated a restrictive phenotype. There were significant differences in pulmonary function phenotypes by race and sex.

In Ethiopia, most chicken disease outbreaks and mortalities are attributed to a respiratory syndrome known as "fengil" with variable clinical signs and undefined etiology. The main goal of this study was to determine whether key respiratory pathogens that could contribute to the fengil syndrome circulate in Ethiopia. Specifically, we aimed to determine the seroprevalence of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), Newcastle disease virus (NDV), Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg), and avian metapneumovirus (aMPV). A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 158 scavenging and 42 small and medium-scale intensive chicken holdings in the East, West and North Shewa Zones of central Ethiopia. Blood from 495 chickens was collected and serological tests were used to determine exposure to these pathogens. Vaccination against NDV was the only immunization practiced with a significantly higher vaccination rate in the intensive than the scavenging system. Serological evidence of a high level of exposure to all pathogens was detected, including the first report on the seroprevalence of aMPV, ILTV, and IBV in the East Shewa Zone. The chicken and holding seroprevalence rates were respectively 91% and 94% for IBV, 34% and 57% for aMPV, 47% and 66% for Mg, 27% and 51% for ILTV and in unvaccinated flocks, 39% and 53% for NDV. These pathogens could contribute to the fengil syndrome, commonly ascribed to NDV. The seroprevalence of aMPV and ILTV was higher in chickens under the scavenging system. Exposure to multiple pathogens was common, with more than 50% of chickens positive for three or more pathogens in the scavenging system. This was reflected in significant positive associations between seropositivity to ILTV, Mg, ILTV, and IBV. Population-level sampling based on qPCR detection of infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) in poultry dust can be used to assess ILT vaccination outcomes following mass administration in drinking water. We report on the field application of this approach to assess the success of vaccine administration and its use in ILT outbreak control in meat chickens. In Study 1, dust samples were collected from 26 meat chicken flocks at 0, 4, 7, 14, and 21 days post drinking water vaccination (DPV) given between 7 to 13 days of age with the Serva or A20 live attenuated ILT vaccines. Unexpectedly, ILTV DNA was detected in dust samples collected prior to vaccination in 22/26 flocks. Typing revealed that the detected ILTV was different from the vaccine virus. To determine whether the detected ILTV DNA was from active infection or carryover of a noninfectious virus, Study 2 was implemented in 14 additional flocks with dust samples collected at 0, 7, 14, and 21 DPV and tracheal swabs collected from 15 birds/flock at 0 and 21 DPV. The results indicated that there was active infection with ILTV in those flocks before vaccination. This approach contributed to a statewide control program resulting in the eradication of ILT from South Australia as confirmed by negative ILTV test results for dust samples from 50 flocks and the absence of clinical ILT. These findings show that ILTV infection prior to vaccination is common in outbreak situations and that dust samples must be collected at 0 and 7 DPV for meaningful interpretation of vaccination outcomes and ILTV status. Comparatively low-cost dust testing during an outbreak, coupled with typing information, greatly assisted with decision making and control strategies during a major outbreak, including confirmation of the absence of infection in the final stages.

Ascaridia galli infection models use eggs isolated from chicken excreta, worm uteri and worms cultured in artificial media. The aim of this study was to compare the infectivity of A. galli eggs isolated from these sources under two infection regimens. A 3 × 2 factorial arrangement was employed to test the infectivity of A. galli eggs from the three sources and two modes of infection (single or trickle infection). One hundred and fifty-six Isa-Brown one day-old cockerels randomly assigned to the six treatment groups (n = 26) were orally infected with embryonated A. galli eggs obtained from the three A. galli egg sources (worm uteri, excreta or eggs shed in vitro) administered either as single dose of 300 eggs at one day-old or trickle infected with 3 doses of 100 eggs over the first week of life. Twenty-two negative control birds remained uninfected. Eggs obtained from cultured worms or excreta exhibited a higher embryonation capacity (P = 0.003) than eggs obtained from worm uteri. There were higher worm establishment (infectivity) rates from embryonated eggs originating from cultured worms and worm uteri compared with eggs obtained from fresh excreta (P < 0.0001). Trickle infection resulted in a significantly higher total worm burden (P = 0.002), establishment rate (P = 0.002) and excreta egg counts (EEC, P = 0.025) than single infection. Worm length was greater in birds infected with embryonated eggs from excreta than from uteri or cultured worms (P < 0.0001). However, mode of infection did not affect worm length (P = 0.719) and weight (P = 0.945). A strong significant positive linear correlation was observed between EECs and female worm counts at 12 weeks of post infection sampling (r = 0.75; P < 0.0001). Body weight of birds was negatively correlated with both worm burden (r = - 0.21; P < 0.01) and EEC (r = - 0.20; P < 0.05) at 12 weeks post infection. In conclusion, our results show that eggs shed by cultured worms or isolated from worm uteri had greater infective capacity than eggs harvested from excreta and that trickle rather than bolus infection resulted in higher worm establishment. Eggs in the infective stage of the chicken nematode Ascaridia galli are often required for in vivo and in vitro studies on this parasite. The reliability of any artificial A. galli infection depends on the viability and embryonation capacity of A. galli eggs. The aim of this study was to determine ideal storage conditions for maximising the viability of A. galli eggs and maintaining viability for the longest period. A 2 × 2 × 3 × 5 factorial experimental design was employed to investigate the effects of storage temperature (4°C or 26°C), storage condition (aerobic or anaerobic), storage medium (water, 0.1 N H 2 SO 4 or 2% formalin) and storage period (4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks). The viability of eggs was assessed after eggs in all treatment groups were held aerobically at 26°C for 2 weeks after the storage period to test embryonation capacity. Based on morphological characteristics, they were categorised as undeveloped, developing, vermiform, embryonated or dead. The maintenance of viability during storage at 4°C was optimal under anaerobic conditions while at 26°C it was optimal under aerobic conditions. Anaerobic conditions at 26°C led to a rapid loss of viability while aerobic conditions at 4°C had a less severe negative effect on maintenance of viability. Egg storage in 0.1 N H 2 SO 4 resulted in a significantly higher viability overall (54.7%) than storage in 2% formalin (49.2%) or water (37.3%) (P < 0.0001). Untreated water was the least favourable storage medium when eggs were stored at 26°C while it was a medium of intermediate quality at 4°C. The viability of A. galli eggs decreased significantly with storage time (P < 0.0001) depending on the other factors. The lowest rate of decline was seen with storage of eggs under anaerobic conditions at 4°C or aerobic conditions at 26°C in 0.1 N H 2 SO4. Eggs in these treatments retained up to 72% of overall viability at 20 weeks with a decline rate of approximately 2% per week with no significant difference between the two. Therefore, this study has clearly revealed opposing aerobic conditions required for prolonged storage of A. galli eggs in the pre-embryonated state at 4°C. It has also identified that 0.1 N H 2 SO4 provides the best preservation against degradation during storage, particularly at 26°C under aerobic conditions. Local animal health services in rural communities in Cambodia are mainly provided by village animal health workers (VAHWs), although the participation and contribution of VAHWs to livestock disease prevention are uncertain. The participation of the VAHWs as identified by their 'dropout rate' was examined in a desktop review in December 2020 of the national data on VAHWs recorded between 2011 and 2020. The contribution and involvement of VAHWs in disease prevention programmes were examined in a survey conducted between February and March 2014, then analyzed in the context of other surveys of VAHW knowledge, attitudes and practices. The survey involved guided group discussion with VAHWs (n = 198) from the two Cambodian provinces of Kampong Cham and Pursat. This study identified that VAHWs generated less than 22% of their annual household incomes from animal health services. Less than one-third had vaccinated livestock against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), with none having vaccinated cattle every 6 months during the study period, and nearly half of the VAHWs having never vaccinated their own cattle against FMD. As no privately provided FMD vaccination services occurred in these communities, with all vaccines delivered through the government-subsidized programme, the findings confirmed that VAHWs only vaccinated animals against FMD when vaccines were made available by the Government. The desktop review found that the number of VAHWs in 2020 declined by more than 24% since 2017, and the proportion of female VAHWs was consistently low, with a mean of 8.26 (±1.019). These findings confirm findings from previous studies that identified considerable weaknesses in the VAHW system in Cambodia, particularly in contributing to FMD control. Cambodian animal health authorities require more effective policies to strengthen the current VAHW system, improving their services delivery; their retention as 'active'; their development of more sustainable roles with lower 'dropout' rates and the prolonged gender inequity. With the limited availability of government-subsidized FMD vaccination currently, extension programmes that engage VAHWs and farmers in seeking privately funded and delivered FMD vaccination that incorporates appropriate multivalent FMD serotype vaccines of high quality, delivered in small dose vials from a robust cold chain, is suggested. This strategy would assist VAHWs to contribute to the provision of private livestock vaccination services that are likely essential for sustainable FMD prevention and control in Cambodia., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

The Cambodian government is attempting to mobilise government, donor and private sector funding to implement a coordinated FMD vaccination program (FMDVP). A necessary first step is to convince the farmers of the benefits of participating in and potentially financially supporting this program. Information was collected from 300 farmers in order to estimate the on-farm benefits and costs of their participation in an FMDVP. Implementing a successful vaccination program is difficult, and farmers understand from previous experience that there may be institutional, social, technical and financial constraints which limit its success. A benefit-cost analysis needs to take into account that outbreaks do not occur every year, not all cattle will be successfully vaccinated, not all sick animals successfully treated and sometimes sick animals simply sold. This study sensitises these variables in order to give a realistic estimation of the farmer participation benefits in an FMDVP. A general result is that it is worthwhile for farmers to participate in the FMDVP if there are average annual outbreaks, or at least two major outbreaks, in the ensuing 5 years. However, the results are influenced by the interaction of vaccination success and treatment success and coverage. Ineffective coverage and poor treatment of sick animals reduce the benefits of an FMDVP. It is also important that farmers do not sell sick stock and, if they do, that they are able to breed replacements rather than purchase replacements. Food-and-mouth disease (FMD) is endemic in Cambodia. The control programme for FMD has relied on vaccination, with poor vaccination uptake by smallholder farmers becoming an increasing concern. A study to improve the understanding of farmer knowledge, attitudes and practices of FMD control and vaccination was conducted in two Cambodian provinces (Kampong Cham and Pursat). The aim was to identify opportunities to improve the livestock disease control programmes provided by both the government and private sectors. The survey comprised 300 smallholder farmers using a one-on-one interview technique and was completed between January to February 2014. Results identified that over two-thirds of the respondent farmers had not vaccinated their cattle over 2 years (2011-2013). Of those who did, most cattle were vaccinated either once a year or once every 3 years. A booster had never been administered. It was concluded that the FMD vaccine had only been administered through an unreliable and limited government vaccination programme, and private FMD vaccination services were not accessed in the study areas. FMD outbreaks occurred every year during the study period, with a morbidity rate of over 30%. Isolation of first infected cattle from the household herd was not practiced, with treatment identified as the first preference intervention. Farmers often assisted other farmers to restrain and treat infected cattle both before (57%) and after (43%) their own cattle were infected. This indicated that most farmers did not practice basic biosecurity measures and chose to report FMD outbreaks to the village animal health workers (VAHW), friends, neighbours and relatives in preference to government officials. It was concluded that poor knowledge of disease transmission and biosecurity, with low FMD vaccination coverage and a focus on treatment, contribute to regular FMD outbreaks in these communities. Improvement of FMD control requires the cooperation of villagers, VAHWs and village leaders in disease reporting, with either improved funding of government vaccination services or establishing a private FMD vaccination service. Training programmes for farmers on disease transmission, and the importance of biosecurity and vaccination, including information on the cost-benefits of treatment versus full fee bi-annual FMD vaccination, are required., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
