12. The Relationship of Video-Taping Experiences to Classroom Interaction Behaviors and Peer Acceptance among Elementary Pupils.

Abstract

This study proposed to intervene systematically on teacher and pupil population with interpersonal skill training. The program was designed to provide opportunities for teachers to examine their own classroom behavior, and to provide children with social skill training. The inservice teacher training, utilizing an examination of on-site video tapings, was accompanied by significant gains in positive teaching behaviors. The analysis of teacher training correlated with social skill training for pupils showed significant mean gains in peer acceptance by those pupils whose teachers participated in the inservice training program and among the students who were direct recipients of social skill training. No change in peer acceptance was observed for the control group. (Author)

13. The Differential Influence of Three Teacher Consultation Techniques on Feelings of Self and Peer Acceptance of Children.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the productivity of three differing focuses for organizing teacher group consultation activities. These focuses were: (1) the curriculum, i.e., individualizing instructional materials; (2) personalizing classroom interactions; and (3) personalizing classroom interactions through classroom videotapings. The productivity of the teacher group consultations was measured by changes in the degree of likeability among the children, i.e., their Peer Acceptance scores. Significant gains were observed in the Peer Acceptance scores of those children whose teachers participated in group consultations focusing on personalizing classroom interactions both in the presence and the absence of classroom videotapings. Similar findings were not observed for those children whose teachers participated in group consultations focusing on individualizing instructional materials. The results of the study suggested that more benefits accrue to children when counselors provide teachers with opportunities to personalize their classroom interactions than when teachers have opportunities to individualize their instructional materials. The findings also indicated that elementary school counselors who provide systematically organized group consultations with teachers can make a positive impact on the learning environment of children. 14. The Relationship of Teacher Affective Behavior to Pupil Affective Behavior.

Abstract

The study investigated the relationship of teacher affective behavior changes to pupil affective behavior changes in the presence of elementary school guidance services for both populations. Specifically, the study asked: Is teacher change in Intimacy and Esprit related to pupil change in Self Perception and Peer Acceptance? Activities were designed to: (1) provide children with counseling opportunities, individual and group; and (2) provide teachers with consulting activities which included classroom video-taping, private and group focused video-tape feedback sessions, and discussions of classroom management techniques. Analyses of covariance yielded significantly higher Self Perceptions scores among pupils whose teachers' Esprit and Intimacy scores evidenced the greatest change, and Peer Acceptance scores among pupils whose teachers made the greatest gains in Esprit. Additionally, correlated t-tests indicated no significant gains in either Esprit or Intimacy for teachers. On the other hand, significant gains were observed for pupil Peer Acceptance scores. It should be noted that significant decreases were observed for all but one factor of the Self Perceptions Index. It was concluded that positive changes in teacher affective behaviors were associated with positive changes in pupil affective behaviors. Further, the findings suggested that comprehensive guidance services have the potential for influencing such behavior changes. (Author)

15. Changing Teacher Competence Perceptions by Focused Video-Tape Feedback.

Abstract

The study provided teachers with systematic opportunities to: (1) be videotaped in their classrooms; (2) privately view their tapes and receive verbal and written critiques of their positive classroom behaviors; (3) share exemplary segments of their tapes in regularly scheduled teacher inservice group meetings; and (4) view and critique, in the group meetings, the tapes of other teachers. Teachers' professional competence perceptions were defined as the amount of information known and the degree of professional competence accorded to faculty colleagues, as measured by changes in teachers' scores on the Professional Competence Peer Opinionnaire (PCPO). Significant gains were observed in the amount of information known about the professional competence of the faculty colleagues and in the degree of professional competence accorded to faculty colleagues at the conclusion of the study. The study concluded that teachers are interested in enlarging their effective teaching behavior repertoires. Further, when teachers have opportunitites to observe and adopt productive techniques utilized by their colleagues, the professional competence they ascribe to their colleagues and the amount of information they have concerning the professional competence of their colleagues will be increased. Focused videotape feedback teacher inservice training is believed to provide such opportunities. (Author)

16. The Impact of Teacher Consultation on Elementary School Children.

Abstract

The described inservice teacher training program was designed for use by elementary school counselors in their role as a consultant to teachers. The training program proposed to provide opportunities for teachers to examine their classroom behaviors and learn how certain behaviors influence the learning environment of the child. The topics explored in the six sessions were: Feelings and the Acquisition of Subject Matter; Self Perceptions and How They are Learned; Teacher-Pupil Interactions; Antecedents of Teaching Problems; and Systematic Instruction in Socialization Skills. In addition to opportunities to discuss the presented topics, teachers were also able to examine video tapes of their own classroom behaviors and to have these behaviors examined by their peers. These experiences were related to a variety of classroom management techniques for effective learning environments. At the conclusion of the inservice program positive responses regarding the value of the training sessions were observed for the teachers. Further, significant positive gains in the self perception scores of the children were observed despite the fact that the children were not a part of the training program. (Author)

Abstract

The Portsmouth Project attempted to develop a consciousness in teachers of how they acted in their own classrooms and of the effect their behavior had on the learning environment of children. A basic assumption of the program was that teachers will change their style of interacting with students in the classroom if they become more aware of their own behavior. Given an opportunity to examine their own teaching techniques and to form models of desired behavior, teachers will create more effective classroom learning climates for their charges. Not only will the training sessions be positively perceived by teachers, but the modified teacher behavior will have a positive impact on the pupils. The Portsmouth test situation, therefore was designed to provide teachers with such an opportunity to observe, discuss, and analyze themselves and others on video-tapes. The solution to eradicating disciplinary practices detrimental to learning seems to the authors to rest in providing teachers with systematic training in classroom management. The format of the training sessions was designed to provide teachers with these opportunities through observation, discussion, and analysis of video tapes. Not only will the training sessions be positively perceived by teachers, but the sessions will also have a positive impact on the pupils. (Author/JM)

18. Consulting for Improved Self Perceptions of Elementary School Children.

Abstract

This paper investigated the consulting role of the elementary school counselor. A six-week training program was instituted which allows teachers to examine their own classroom behaviors through observing and analyzing video-tapes. An evaluation of the program impact on the pupil population indicated significant and positive mean gains in self perceptions. In addition, an examination of the relationships of teacher perceptions of pupils to six pupil characteristics (socio-economic status, sex, race, peer acceptance, intelligence, perceptions of self) suggested: (1) Teachers are influenced by the socio-economic status of the child; (2) a teacher's style of interaction teaches children how to perceive their classmates; (3) teachers are not generally influenced by a child's race or sex; and (4) teachers and pupils tend to agree on perceptions of school work tasks, but no such congruence was observed for social skill tasks. 19. The Impact of Social Skill Training on the Affective Perceptions of Elementary School Children.

Abstract

The major objective of the study was to provide children with social skill training through: (1) individual opportunities for children to examine and adopt more productive alternatives to the satisfaction of their needs; (2) small group opportunities for children to discuss and learn the differential consequences of cognitive, affective, and social behaviors; and, (3) classroom opportunities for children to explore the dynamics of classroom life and learn the techniques of effective interaction with others. The study was conducted in an urban elementary school in Virginia, housing approximately 400 children and 14 teachers, grades one to six. The racial balance of the elementary school population was 60 percent black and 40 percent white. The majority of the children were from lower or lower-middle class backgrounds, 54 percent and 42 percent, respectively. Two elementary school counselors interpreted the social skill training two days per week during the period from October, 1971--April, 1972. The counselor's time utilization was documented by a log of their activities. To evaluate the effectiveness of the counselors' intervention, a Personal Competence Inventory was administered to children in grades three to six in October, 1971 and March, 1972. The Inventory included two tests: Peer Acceptance Index, and Self Perceptions Index. The teachers also rated their pupils. (Author/JM)

Abstract

Fusion energy research has in the past 40 years focused primarily on the tokamak concept, but recent advances in plasma theory and computational power have led to renewed interest in stellarators. The largest and most sophisticated stellarator in the world, Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X), has just started operation, with the aim to show that the earlier weaknesses of this concept have been addressed successfully, and that the intrinsic advantages of the concept persist, also at plasma parameters approaching those of a future fusion power plant. Here we show the first physics results, obtained before plasma operation: that the carefully tailored topology of nested magnetic surfaces needed for good confinement is realized, and that the measured deviations are smaller than one part in 100,000. This is a significant step forward in stellarator research, since it shows that the complicated and delicate magnetic topology can be created and verified with the required accuracy.
