3.3.1 Metachirus aritanai new species 3.3.1.1 Synonymy (Didelphys [Metachirus]) nudicaudata: Trouessart 1989:1236; part, not M. nudicaudatus (Geoffroy St. Hilaire 1803). [Philander] nudicaudatus: Pine 1973:391; part, not M. nudicaudatus (Geoffroy St. Hilaire 1803). M. nudicaudatus: Patton et al. 2000:61–64; not M. nudicaudatus (Geoffroy St. Hilaire 1803); first evidence that Metachirus from Pará represented a new taxon. M [etachirus]. n [udicaudatus]. nudicaudatus: Gardner and Dagosto 2007:37; part, not M. nudicaudatus (Geoffroy St. Hilaire 1803). Holotype: An adult male consisting of skin and skull (INPA 2831, original number CS 83), in addition to tissue sample preserved in ethanol, collected on 8 July 1999 by Maria Nazareth F. da Silva in the Tapirapé-Aquiri National Forest, Marabá, Pará, Brazil (05° 46′ 53.10″ S; 50° 31′ 48.60″ W; Figure 1). Paratypes ( N = 19): Eight adult females (N = 8) consisting of skins, skulls and tissues preserved in ethanol; two adult males (N = 2) consisting of skins, skulls and tissues preserved in ethanol; and five sub-adult and young individuals (N = 9) consisting of specimens preserved in fluid, skull and tissues. Adult females: two specimens (PSA 06; PSA 200) were collected by Cleuton L. Miranda in the Tapirapé-Aquiri National Forest, municipality of Marabá, Pará, Brazil and will be cataloged in the mammal collection of MPEG. Three specimens were collected by Natalia C. Ardente, two (MN 78307; MN 79953) in the Carajás National Forest, municipality of Marabá, Pará, Brazil, and one (MN 75549) in the Tapirapé-Aquiri National Forest, municipality of Marabá, Pará, Brazil. The three remaining specimens (LBCE 14843, 14845, 14859) were collected by Fabiana Caramaschi, Cibele R. Bonvicino and Paulo Sérgio D’ Andrea in the Vila Santa Cruz, Araguatins municipality, State of Tocantins, Brazil, and will be cataloged in the mammal collection of MN. Adult male specimens: two specimens (MN 73864; MN 78309) were collected by Natalia C. Ardente in the Carajás National Forest, State of Pará, Brazil. Sub-adult and young specimens: nine specimens were collected by Marco Antonio R. Junior and Stepheson Abrantes; five specimens (MAR 890, 1165, 1292, 1407, 1409) were collected in the Caxiuanã National Forest, municipality of Portel, Pará, Brazil, and will be cataloged in the mammal collection of MPEG; Four specimens (CN 78, 83, 91, 240) were collected in Bom Futuro on the left margin of the middle Xingu River, Pará, Brazil, and will be cataloged in MPEG. Type locality: Tapirapé-Aquiri National Forest, municipality of Marabá, state of Pará, Brazil (05° 46′ 53.10″ S; 50° 31′ 48.60″ W; Figure 1). Etymology: The name M. aritanai is given in honor of the great leader Aritana Yawalapiti (1949–2020), of the Yawalapiti ethnicity, from the upper Xingu River region and in honour of all indigenous peoples of Brazil. The leader Aritana died in August 2020, a victim of covid-19, representing a great loss for the Xingu people, all indigenous peoples, and all Brazilians. Distribution: M. aritanai new species is restricted to the Xingu-Tocantins interfluve, the endemism center Xingu sensu Silva et al. (2005). As far as we know M. aritanai new species is endemic to this biogeographic region (Figure 1). The species is bounded to the north by the Amazon River, to the west by the Xingu River and to the east by the Tocantins River. The southern boundary cannot yet be clearly defined. According to the consensus topology and times of divergence presented in this study, a sister species of M. aritanai new species, M. nudicaudatus, occurs north of the Amazon River (Figures 2 and 3). Diagnosis: M. aritanai new species is characterized by the combination of the following characters: general colouration light brown with speckles of gold on the back; small amount of rust hair behind the ears; supra-ocular spots of cream colour; cheeks with the same colouration as supra-ocular spots; brown and gold-speckled face; absence of median stripe on the rostrum; the presence of a narrow, blackened dorsal line at the top of the head, usually extending to the nape of the neck; clear ventral surface, usually pure cream, wide interorbital region (average = 12.12 mm) and with incipient ridges; rounded and inflated cranial cavity, with large maxillopalatine (average = 24.68 mm) and fenestrae; small entoconids; absent or incipient temporal crest. Figures 5–7 show the mentioned characters, except for the morphology of the entoconid, which is similar to that of M. nudicaudatus and may be seen in Figure 15, page 46 in Voss et al. (2019). 3.4 Description 3.4.1 External morphology Combined length of adult head and body ca. 230 mm on average (ranging 243–275 mm); adult weight ca. 380 g. Midrostral fur cream coloured with apical portion dark brown (most of the cream-coloured hairs have black tips, but there are also completely blackened or cream hairs in lesser quantities, somewhat like the dorsal coat). Dark median rostral stripe absent or inconspicuous. Dark circumocular mask present (blackened), extending posteriorly to the base of the ear, continuous with the coronal fur. Narrow dark brown dorsal line starting at the coronal spot and extending to the end of the nape. Throat gland present in adult males. Small pure cream supraocular spots present, usually in the shape of an inverted triangle, varying in size. Pure cream-coloured cheeks, of the same colour as the supraocular spots. Completely brown ears. Presence of small amounts of rust hair behind the base of the ears. General colouration light brown speckled with gold. Dorsal colour pale brown, with grey-based hairs, cream stripe over most of its length and short blackish apex, giving the back a golden speckled appearance. Dorsal hairs usually do not exceed 10 mm in length. Dorsal guard hairs short, dark, and inconspicuous. Lateral portions of the body brown and lighter than the back. Ventral pelage usually pure cream, similar in colour to the supra-ocular spots and cheeks. Mammae 4–1–4 = 9, all abdominal inguinal. Pouch absent. Tail is light brown to dark brown, dorsal discolouring gradually towards the distal portion; ventral surface of the tail not pigmented. Scales without a consistent arrangement (both spiral and annular patterns coexisting). Tail longer than the length of the head and body, covered with 5–10 mm long hairs on all sides at the base. Hands and feet covered with cream-coloured hair, like the ventral coat; Manus mesaxonic (d III> d IV); Carpal tubercles absent in mature adult males. 3.4.2 Cranium-dental morphology Cranium wide and robust. Relatively elongated face. Nasal branch of the premaxilla developed. Rostral process of the premaxilla absent. Long nasal bone, widely enlarged in the region of the maxillary/frontal suture. Mandible developed, with elongated and deep infraorbital foramen at the height of the Pm2. Interorbital region-wide (average = 12.12 mm) with incipient ridges. Lacrimal bone extends in the rostrum to the anterior margin of the orbital cavity, surpassing the two exposed lacrimal foramina. Zygomatic arch well developed, composed by the jugal and squamosal. Postorbital process of the jugal absent. Postorbital process of the frontal absent. Palatine articulates ventrally with mandible and dorsally with frontal. Frontal quite developed extending from the posterior region of the nasal branch of the mandible to the posterior region of the cranium, where it articulates with the parietal. Supraorbital crest imperceptible. Absent or incipient temporal crest. When incipient, the crest most often extends from the frontal to the parietal, where it can be joined to the midline of the cranium and extend to the lambdoidal crest. Lamboidal crest not developed. Sagittal crests absent in the anterior part of the occiput. Parietal articulates anteriorly with the frontal, but they are separated by median sutures on the right and on the left. Parietal articulates posteriorly with the supra-occipital and mastoid. Squamosal in contact with the frontal on the side of the cranium. Parietal and alisphenoid not in contact. Petrosal not exposed laterally. Squamosal parietal fenestra absent. Parietal and mastoid normally in contact. Interparietal not in contact with squamosal. Palate long, wide and composed mostly by the mandible, which articulates with the palatal branch of the pre-mandible at the height of the well-developed incisor foramen. Mandible articulates anteriorly with the palate. Maxillopalatine large (average = 24.68 mm) and fenestrated. Mandible and alisphenoid not connected at the bottom of the orbital region, separated by the palatine. Foramen of transverse canal absent. Tympanic process of alisphenoid laterally compressed and non-globular, slightly pointed or rounded. Anterior member of ectotympanic suspended directly from the basicranium. Paraoccipital process broad, erect, and ventrally projected. Dorsal margin of the foramen magnum in contact with exoccipital. Well-developed mandible. Dental formula i5/4, c1/1, pm3/3, m4/4. First upper premolar smaller than the second, well developed and non-vestigial. Second and third upper premolars equivalent in height. Post-metacrist bigger than post-protocrist in molars. The lower third premolar, when deciduous, has three cusps. Entoconids small. 3.4.3 Morphological variation We did not observe differences in the external morphology of males and females within any of the considered age groups (young, sub-adult or adult). However, there were significant age-related morphological differences. Young and sub-adult individuals had a general greyish and darker colour than adult individuals. Yet, sub-adults also exhibit some diagnostic characters of M. aritanai new species, such as cream supra-ocular spots and cheeks of the same colour, absence of median stripe on the rostrum and cream-pure ventral surface (Table 5). 3.4.4 Comparisons M. aritanai new species differs from the nominal form, M. nudicaudatus (sensu Voss et al. 2019 and present study) and from M. myosuros from the Atlantic Forest (sensu present study) by their dorsal colouring (light brown speckled with gold in M. aritanai vs. brown speckled with black and light orange in M. nudicaudatus, vs. brown-orange to light brown in M. myosuros); ventral surface colouring (purecream in M. aritanai vs. yellow-cream in M. nudicaudatus, vs. yellowish hues in M. myosuros); colouring of the sides of the body (similar to the dorsum but slightly lighter in M. aritanai vs. orange-brown, visibly lighter than the dorsum with conspicuous blackish and orange hairs in M. nudicaudatus vs. yellow with a variety of light greyish and even golden hues of grey and golden in M. myosuros); colouring of the supra-ocular spots (cream in M. aritanai vs. cream and slightly orange, especially at the edges in M. nudicaudatus, vs. yellow to cream in M. myosuros); lighter hair behind the ears (yellowish and in small amounts in M. aritanai vs. rust and in large quantities in M. nudicaudatus, vs. yellowish hues in M. myosuros); hair colour on the tarsus (cream in M. aritanai vs. brownish-orange in M. nudicaudatus, vs. varying hues from blackish to brownish-grey with golden fur in M. myosuros); width and robustness of the skull (wider and more robust in M. aritanai vs. narrower and more delicate in both M. nudicaudatus and M. myosuros); nasal width in relation to the maxillary (much narrower than the pre-maxillary in the initial portion and similar width in the end portion with a rounder end near frontal bone in M. aritanai vs. much narrower than the pre-maxillary in the initial portion and similar width in the end portion with a tapered end near frontal in both M. nudicaudatus and M. myosuros); contour of the pre-maxillary (wider, short and pointed in M. aritanai vs. narrower, long and rounded in M. nudicaudatus, vs. narrower, long and pointed in M. myosuros); frontal edges (irregular in the posterior portion with the presence of a protuberance in the median region in M. aritanai vs. more regular and rounded limit, without the presence of a median protuberance in M. nudicaudatus, vs. usually developed and pointed in M. myosuros); average differences in mitochondrial sequences of the Cytb gene (between M. aritanai and M. nudicaudatus = 8.2%; between M. aritanai and M. myosuros = 14.4%; Table 5; Figures 5–7)., Published as part of Miranda, Cleuton Lima, Nunes, Mario da Silva, Fabrício Machado, Arielli, Farias, Izeni Pires, Menezes, Fernando Heberson, Ardente, Natalia Carneiro, Dos Santos-Filho, Manoel, Bredin, Yennie Katarina & da Silva, Maria Nazareth F., 2023, A new species of jupati, genus Metachirus Burmeister 1854 (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae) for the Brazilian Amazon, pp. 172-189 in Mammalia (Warsaw, Poland) (Warsaw, Poland) 87 (2) on pages 178-184, DOI: 10.1515/mammalia-2021-0176, http://zenodo.org/record/7837851, {"references":["Trouessart, E. - L. Økt kunnskap om karbon i jord i Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim og Oslo. NINA Rapport 2297. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Kunnskapsgrunnlaget for å vurdere effekten som arealbruksendringer har på karbonlagrene i jord er ikke tilstrekkelig. For å kunne imøtekomme nasjonale forventninger, og oppfylle klimastrategier eller satsninger, har dette prosjektet sammenstilt kunnskap om karbon i jord, og belyst hvordan de deltakende kommunene (Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim og Oslo) kan øke denne kunnskapen der den er mangelfull. Rapportens overordnete mål er å oppdatere datagrunnlaget om verdien av karbonlagrene i de fire kommunene, og identifisere kunnskapsmangel og grad av usikkerhet rundt eksisterende estimater. Vi har 1) laget en oversikt over det mest oppdaterte og tilgjengelige kartgrunnlaget om hovedøkosystemenes utbredelse, 2) oppdatert kunnskapsgrunnlaget om karbonlagrene i disse hovedøkosystemene gjennom en litteraturgjennomgang, 3) identifisert viktige datamangler for å kunne oppfylle rapporteringskravene under utvikling for karbonregnskap ifølge naturregnskapsprinsipper, 4) vurdert om det finnes hjemmelsgrunnlag for å stille krav om undersøkelser eller utredninger av karbon i jord i bestemmelser. Det er stor variasjon i både dekningsgraden av kart, og hvor detaljerte kartdata som finnes tilgjengelig for hver hovedtype. Nøyaktigheten på heldekkende kartlag er heller ikke tilstrekkelig for å fange opp viktige naturtyper med små arealer og grønnstrukturer i bebygde områder. Derfor trengs det et bedre kartgrunnlag for økosystemene, slik at økologiske data og karbonlager kan knyttes til arealtypene. En mulighet for å få en bedre oversikt over konkrete arealer er å kombinere flere av kartkildene som er beskrevet i denne rapporten. De mest verdifulle skogstypene for karbonlagrene under bakken og på økosystemnivå er gamle, naturskogslignende skoger, særlig av boreal løvskog. Karbonlageret i myr er betydelig større enn i skog, og myr er det mest karbonrike økosystemet med 5-10 ganger høyere karbonlager sammenlignet med skog på mineraljord. Litteraturen fra urbane økosystemer viste at gamle, tredominerte naturtyper generelt har et høyere karboninnhold i jord enn gressdominerte urbane økosystemer. Jorddybde, jordtype og vannmetning kan også ha mye å si for karboninnholdet. Litteraturen om karbonlagrene i åpne- og urbane landskap er spesielt mangelfull, men generelt er det lite skrevet om karbonlagring i jordsmonn i norske økosystemer. Tallene for jordkarbonlagre som kommer fra litteraturen er trolig tilstrekkelig for bruk i overordnet arealplanlegging. Hvis konsekvensutredningene skal inkludere karbonlagre, trengs det mer detaljerte undersøkelser for å kunne estimere karbonlageret som er sårbart før endringene settes i gang. Torvdybde er en god indikator for karbonlager i myr, mens det trengs beregninger av overjordisk biomasse, dybde og variasjon i organiske jordlag i skog og andre økosystemer uten torv. Det er behov for nasjonale retningslinjer for hvilket kunnskapsgrunnlag som bør innhentes om karbon i jord og hvilken metodikk som skal anvendes, samt at det må utvikles et system for innrapportering og videre bruk. Dette bør utformes med henvisning til veiledning om metoder og med konkretisering av når kommunen faktisk kan pålegge denne type kunnskapsinnhenting. Videre bør det utvikles en felles metode for beregninger av kommunens samlete karbonlagre og hvordan ulike tiltak kan påvirke utslipp fra, og fremtidig opptak av, karbon i ulike typer area-ler/jordtyper. Dette vil kunne inngå i arbeidet med klima- og energiplaner, samtidig som felles metode og system vil kunne gi sammenlignbare data som kan bidra til bedre helhetlige vurderinger av samlet belastning. Kommunene har behov for kunnskap om karbon i jord i ulike planprosesser og vedtak. Generelle utredningskrav i offentlige vedtak er omtalt, deretter hvordan det kan gis planbestemmelser om karbon i jord. Vi har oppsummert ulike scenarier og muligheter for å stille krav til innhenting av kunnskap om karbonrike arealer med hjemler i plan- og bygningsloven og konsekvensutredningsregelverket.

Naturinngrep og tap av leveområder for arter er regnet som den største trusselen mot naturmangfoldet, både i Norge og resten av verden. Dammer og andre vassdragsanlegg er store naturinngrep som påvirker naturmangfoldet betydelig både under bygging og mens de er i drift. Mer enn 50 000 dammer (demninger) høyere enn 15 m finnes i verden i tillegg til millioner av mindre dammer. Det internasjonale naturpanelet er klare på at det ikke lenger holder å unngå nye inngrep, men at områder må restaureres. Nedleggelse av dammer frigjør arealer som kan restaureres. NVE mottar og behandler stadig flere søknader om konsesjon til nedleggelse av dammer, men fremdeles er det relativt lite erfaring med nedleggelser i Norge. Når dammene fjernes, senkes vannstanden og tidligere magasinbunner blir helt eller delvis tørrlagt. Disse tørrlagte områdene framstår som unaturlige elementer i landskapet, men ved å tilrettelegge for vegetasjonsetablering, så kan området gjenopprette naturverdier og framstå som mer attraktive for friluftsliv. Vegetasjonsetablering er også grunnlaget for at andre organismegrupper kommer tilbake og vil bidra til å hindre avrenning til det gjenværende vassdraget. Formålet med prosjektet er å sammenfatte tilgjengelig kunnskap basert på internasjonal og nasjonal litteratur som omhandler revegetering av reguleringssone ved permanent senkning av vannstanden i vannmagasiner. Vi har sammenstilt vitenskapelig og grå litteratur (rapporter og upubliserte data) som omhandler vegetasjonsetablering i tørrlagte vannmagasin. Det er gjennomført en rekke studier og forskning i tilknytting til damfjerning, men det faglige fokuset har i all hovedsak vært på fisk, sedimenter og vannøkosystemet generelt. Kun et fåtall forskningsprosjekter og studier omhandler vegetasjonsetablering i tørrlagte magasiner, som er temaet i denne studien. Ved å se de internasjonale studiene i sammenheng med norske studier som omhandler vegetasjonsetablering i sammenlignbare områder, kan vi oppsummere følgende råd om revegetering i tørrlagte magasin: - Klar målformulering er avgjørende for å vurdere om det tar kort eller lang tid før vegetasjonssammensetningen oppfyller målet. - Naturlig revegetering er den foretrukne revegeteringsmetoden i samtlige studier, og kun når forholdene ikke ligger til rette for naturlig revegetering, blir andre revegeteringsmetoder benyttet. Utfordringen ligger i å vurdere når det er nødvendig med ytterligere tiltak. - De viktigste faktorene som må vurderes er: terrengform, sedimentsammensetning, (grovt/fint), erosjonsstatus, organisk innhold, fuktighet, avstand til omkringliggende vegetasjon, og forekomst av fremmede arter i nærområdet. Habitat loss and degradation is considered the greatest threat to biodiversity, both in Norway and the rest of the world. Dams and other hydropower facilities affect biodiversity both during construction and during operation. More than 50,000 dams higher than 15 m exist in the world in addition to millions of smaller dams. The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, IPBES, states that nature conservation is no longer enough to stop the loss of biodiversity. There is a need for restoration of degraded ecosystems. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, NVE, receives an increasing number of applications for dam removal, but still there are relatively little experience with dam removal in Norway. When the dams are removed, the water level is lowered, and previous reservoirs are partially drained. These arid areas appear as foreign, but by facilitating the establishment of vegetation, the ecological conditions can be restored and the area might appear more attractive for people. Vegetation establishment facilitates the return of other groups of organisms and will help to prevent runoff to the remaining watercourse. The purpose of this project is to summarize available knowledge based on international and national literature on revegetation in water reservoirs where the water level is permanently lowered due to dam removal. A large number of studies on dam removal has been conducted, but the focus has mostly been on fish, sediments and the aquatic ecosystem in general. Only a few scientific studies focus on establishment of vegetation after dam removal, which is the topic of this report. By including international studies on dam-removal in addition to Norwegian studies on revegetation in comparable areas, we can summarize the following advice on revegetation in dry-laid reservoirs: - A clear definition of the revegetation goal is crucial to assess whether it takes a short or long time before the vegetation composition meets the goal. - Natural revegetation is the preferred revegetation method in all studies, and only when the conditions are not favorable to natural revegetation, other revegetation methods are used. The challenge is to assess when further measures are needed. - The most important factors that should be considered when choosing revegetation methods are: topography, sediment composition (rough/fine), erosion status, organic content, moisture, distance to surrounding vegetation, and occurrence of invasive species in the area.

Nasjonal overvåking av kalklindeskog og kalklindeskogsopper kalklindeskogsopper. Aktiviteter i 2021, samt sammenstilling av basisdata fra 1. og 2. overvåkingsomløp 2013-2021. NINA Rapport 2164. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Det er foretatt to omløp med overvåking av fruktlegemer av jordboende sopp i 30 representative lokaliteter av kalklindeskog i Oslofjordsområdet. Overvåkingsprogrammet vektlegger truete, habitat-spesifikke kalklindeskogsarter. De to omløp hadde hver minst én god soppsesong med mye fruktifisering, og vurderes til sammen å gi et nokså komplett bilde av artsinventaret av kalklindeskogsopper på lokalitetene, og betraktes derfor som basis-data («baseline») for videre overvåking. Det er registrert 183 overvåkingsarter med fruktlegemer 2013-2021. Med overvåkingsarter menes (i) habitat-spesifikke kalklindeskogsarter (i alt 94 arter registrert), samt (ii) andre, rødlistede jordboende arter som mer tilfeldig kan dukke opp i kalklindeskogen (89 arter). De førstnevnte 94 er kjernen i overvåkingen, siden disse artene har hele eller det meste av sine populasjoner innenfor dette overvåkingsuniverset. Av de 94 registrerte kalklindeskogsartene er det 78 truete arter (7 kritisk truet, 40 sterkt truet), herunder 7 norske ansvarsarter som er inkludert i prosjektet Trua natur. F.eks. er ansvarsarten Cortinarius osloensis registrert på 6 overvåkingslokaliteter (to i Oslo, fire i Asker). Vi kjenner ikke til andre overvåkingsprogram som favner så mange truete arter og ansvarsarter innenfor et representativt overvåkingsnettverk. Overvåkingsprogrammet favner nå >90% av de kjente kalklindeskogsartene fra Norge. På de artsrikeste lokalitetene er det registrert >50 overvåkingsarter. Det er utført to utprøvinger av miljø-DNA fra jordprøver som alternativ/supplerende soppovervåking. En utprøving ble gjort i 2019 med miljø-DNA prøvetaging fra 22 lokaliteter, med påvisning av mange av de samme artene som i fruktlegeme-registrering. En del arter, også sjeldne ansvarsarter, ble påvist på nye lokaliteter i miljø-DNA prøvetagningen. Den andre utprøvningen ble utført i 2021 med miljø-DNA-tagning i et tett prøvetagingsgitter innenfor en storrute på 18 x 18 m på to lokaliteter på Bygdøy. Resultatene viste påvisning av bemerkelsesverdig mange arter innenfor 18 x 18 m, omtrent samme antall som er funnet på hele lokaliteten. Dette kan tyde på at metoden er «overømfintlig», at den også kan fange opp små, inaktive mycelfragmenter eller spore-forekomster. Videre fanget denne metodikken opp flere arter med større, trolig vitale myceler, som ikke har fruktifisert 2013-2021. Det romlige mønsteret av artene innenfor 18 x 18 meter rute, viser en ofte tydelig klumping, iblant som brede striper, men disse stripene samsvarer til dels dårlig med de observerte smale buer/hekseringer som dannes av fruktlegemene. Et viktig fortrinn med miljø-DNA vil være at metoden kan fange opp mycel-forekomster også i år med dårlig soppsesong og ingen fruktifisering. Det ser ut til at tradisjonell fruktlegeme-registrering pr. i dag er mest egnet til å fange opp kvantitative populasjonsdata. Miljø-DNA kan også bidra med kvantitative data ved smårutefrekvens, men pr. i dag vil det være meget kostbart å legge ut mange miljø-DNA rutenett på hver lokalitet. Det foreslås imidlertid at framtidig overvå-king suppleres med miljø-DNA fra jordprøver i sesonger med liten/ingen fruktifisering. Brandrud, T.E., Bendiksen, E., Bredin, Y.K., Dima, B., Eng, S., Kauserud, H. & Thoen, E. 2022. National monitoring of calcareous Tilia forests and calcareous Tilia forest fungi. Activities in 2021, and compilation of base-line data from 1. og 2. monitoring period 2013-2021 NINA Report 2164. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research Two periods of monitoring of fruitbodies (basidiocarps) of habitat-specific calcareous Tilia forest fungi have been carried out, including 30 representative localities of calcareous lime forests in the Oslofjord area. The two periods (2013-2015; 2019-2021) had each one good fungal season with rich fruitification, and this is considered altogether to give a fairly complete picture of the fungal community in the calcareous Tilia forest on the given localities and provides a good base-line for further monitoring. Altogether 183 monitoring species were recorded with fruitbodies 2013-2021. Monitoring species include (i) habitat-specific calcareous Tilia forest species (94 species recorded), and (ii) other, redlisted soil-dwelling species which occur more sporadically in the lime forests (89 species). The 94 habitat-specific species represents the core of the monitoring, since these have (most of) their populations within this monitored forest type. Of the 94 recorded Tilia forest species, 78 threatened are included (7 critically endangered; 40 endangered), including 7 Norwegian responsibility species included in the project Threatened Nature. For instance, our responsibility species Cortinarius osloensis is recorded in 6 monitoring localities. There are few if any other monitoring programmes covering this many threatened species and national responsibility species within a representative monitoring network. Our program now includes >90% of the known calcareous lime forest species in Norway. In the most species-rich localities >50 monitoring species are recorded. Two pilot studies on fungal environmental DNA from soil samples were performed as supplementary monitoring methods to traditional fruitbody surveillance: The first was performed in 2019 with e-DNA from 22 localities and showed high similarity in species records as compared to fungal fruitbody surveillance. However, the e-DNA monitoring showed a number of species from new localities, including rare national responsibility species. The second pilot study of 2021 an-alysed e-DNA from soil collected from a dense 18 x 18 m grid from 2 localities on Bygdøy. A remarkably high number of species were found within the studied grid. This might indicate that the method is “over-sensitive”, capturing traces of inactive mycelia or spores. Furthermore, this method captured also more species with larger, probably active mycelia, which have not fruited in 2013-2021. A clear advantage with e-DNA sampling methods is that they capture mycelia-occurrences during seasons of with reduced or no fungal fruitification. Traditional fruitbody surveys are seemingly most suitable for monitoring quantitative population data. E-DNA can contribute to quantitative data by sampling a high number of points in dense grids, but at present the method is rather costly as one need to analyse many such grids (relevées) on every locality. However, it is proposed that future monitoring should be supplemented with e-DNA soil sampling during seasons with little or no fruitbody production.

Bakkestuen, V., Silvennoinen, H.M., Aarrestad, P.A., Bredin, Y.K. og Lunde, L.M.F. 2022. Pilotprosjekt - Jordprøvetakning og jordanalyser i ANO-flater i 2022. NINA Rapport 2222. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Vi har gjennomført et pilotprosjekt for jordprøvetaking i ANO (arealrepresentativ naturovervåking) for å teste metodenes egnethet til å overvåke for eksempel nitrogenavsetning, toleransegrenser og karbonlagre i ulike norske økosystemer. Målet er å tilby et fungerende og kalibrert overvåkingsprogram som skal brukes til å overvåke klimaendringer, endringer i arealbruk og forurensningseffekter på disse parameterne. Det ble samlet inn og analysert 40 jordprøver fra fire ANO-områder (0070 Øygardsbekken, Rogaland; 1065 Litleelva, Fjellgards-vatn-Røyrvatn, Rogaland; 0511 Birkenes, Agder 0588 Julussdalen, Innlandet) og tilhørende ANO-sirkler i løpet av høsten 2022. En ANO-flate er 500 x 500 m og består av 18 (atten) 250 m2 sirkler i et rutenett. Jordprøvene ble samlet fra både organiske og mineralske jordlag i sirklene og analysert for enkle, beskrivende jordparametre (BD, LOI, tørrvekt og fuktighet) og fysiske og kjemiske parametere (tot-N, tot-C, pH, CEC og partikkelstørrelsesfordeling). I tillegg laget vi en forenklet jordprofilbeskrivelse for hver naturtype ved sirklene og målte jorddybder i hver sirkel. Basert på en enkel dataanalyse er metodene som brukes for skog godt egnet for slike overvåkings-programmer som ANO. Prøvetaking for forenklet jordprofilbeskrivelse ga pålitelige resultater med minimal skade på ANO-sirklene. Basert på resultater fra både kjemiske og fysiske analyser av organiske og mineralske jordlag i skogene, ga prøvetakingsmetoden, samt innsamlingen av jordprøvene i felt, data av tilstrekkelig kvalitet uten bevis for blanding av de to jordlagene. I motsetning var både den lettere prøvetakingen for jordprofilbeskrivelse og jordprøver brukt for kjemiske og fysiske parametere i myr og torvmark ikke egnet for alle naturtyper som finnes i ANO-områder. Vi anbefaler derfor å revidere metoden for prøvetaking av myr og torvmark for fremtidige prosjekter. Vi anbefaler også å inkludere et betydelig antall dybderegistreringer per sirkel for både totaldybden av jordprofilene og dybden av det organiske laget, på grunn av store variasjoner og at betydningen av disse parameterne er viktige for andre analyser slik som karbonlagring. Det å sette av noe mer tid til det forberedende arbeidet samt til en ekstra instruksjonsdag for å kalibrere og synkronisere feltarbeidet til forskjellige prøvetakingsteamene før prøvetakingsfeltar-beidet, ville være ekstremt verdifullt og tidsbesparende på lang sikt. Også det å finne nøyaktig prøvetakingssted for jordprøvetagning var utfordrende for overgangsnaturtyper med heterogen jorddybde og type, for eksempel våtmarkskanter. Vi anbefaler derfor å konsentrere fremtidige prosjekter i ANO-sirkler med homogene hovedøkosystemer, for å sikre kostnadseffektiv levering av data av god kvalitet. Vi foreslår også å unngå sjeldne naturtyper og de som er til stede på kun én av de 18 sirklene, da prøvetaking av denne naturtypen (3L/prøve), vil forårsake en uakseptabel stor skade i disse sirklene. Vi vil også gjøre oppmerksom på at noen av nøkkelparameterne (f.eks. tot-N) forventes å variere mellom flatehogst og skog, hvilke to naturtyper ikke er differensiert i ANO-registreringer. Sammenslåing av prøver fra disse naturtypene for analyse kan føre til uriktige kon-klusjoner for disse parameterne. Som en konklusjon er vi overbevist om at den testede metodikken generelt er godt egnet for fremtidige overvåkingsprogrammer, gitt at de ovennevnte erfaringene blir tatt med i planleggingen av jordprøvetakingen og -analysen i ANO-områdene i framtiden. Bakkestuen, V., Silvennoinen, H.M., Aarrestad, P.A., Bredin, Y.K. og Lunde, L.M.F. 2022. Pilot project - Soil sampling and soil analyzes in ANO areas in 2022. NINA Report 2222. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. We carried out a pilot project for soil sampling in ANO (area-representative nature monitoring) to test the methods’ suitability to monitor e.g., nitrogen deposition, tolerance limits and carbon stocks in various Norwegian ecosystems. The aim is to provide a functioning and calibrated monitoring program to be used for monitoring climate change, land use change and pollution effects on those parameters. Altogether 40 soil samples were collected and analyzed from four ANO areas (0070 Øygardsbekken, Rogaland; 1065 Litleelva, Fjellgards-vatn-Røyrvatn, Rogaland; 0511 Birkenes, Agder 0588 Julussdalen, Innlandet) and associated ANO circles during autumn 2022. An ANO area is 500 x 500 m and consists of 18 (eighteen) 250 m2 circles in a regular grid. The soil samples were collected from organic and mineral soil layers of the circles and analyzed for simple, descriptive soil parameters (BD, LOI, dry weight and moisture) and physical and chemical parameters (tot-N, tot-C, pH, CEC and particle size distribution). In addition, we made a simplified soil profile description for each nature type at the circles and measured soil depths at each circle. Based on simple data-analysis the methods used for forests are well suited for such monitoring programs. Sampling for simplified soil profile description yields reliable results with little damage to the ANO-circles. Based on results from chemical and physical analysis of organic and mineral layers of the forests, the sampling method, as well as the pooling of the samples at field, provided data of sufficient quality with no evidence of mixing of the two layers. Contrastingly, both the lighter sampling for the profile description and the soil sampling used for chemical and physical parameters at peatlands, were not suited for all peatland types that are present at ANO areas. We therefore recommend revising the peatland sampling methodology for future campaigns. We also recommend including a substantial amount of depth recordings per circle for both total depth of the soil profile and the depth of the organic layer, due to the high variability in and relatively high importance of these parameters. Reserving more time for the preparatory work as well as for an additional instruction day to calibrate and synchronize the field work of different sampling teams prior to the sampling campaigns would be extremely valuable. Defining the accurate sampling location was challenging for transitional nature types with heterogeneous soil depth and type, such as wetland edges. We therefore recommend concentrating future campaigns in ANO circles at main ecosystems, to secure cost-efficient provision of good quality data. We also suggest avoiding rare habitat types and those present on only one of the 18 circles, as sampling of this extend (3L/sample), will cause an unacceptably large damage in these circles. We would also like to bring to attention that some of the key parameters (e.g. tot-N) are expected to vary between clear cuts and forests, which two nature types are not differentiated in ANO-registrations. Pooling samples from these nature types for analysis will lead to biased conclusions for those parameters. As a conclusion, we are convinced that the tested methodology is generally well suited for future monitoring programs, given that the above-mentioned experiences and concerns are accounted for in planning the soil sampling and analysis at the ANO areas.

Immerzeel, B. & Bredin, Y.K. 2022. Kunnskapsgrunnlag for nordeuropeiske urbane økosystemer – Biologisk mangfold, tilstand og forventet utvikling. NINA Rapport 2212. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Denne rapporten gir en oversikt over dagens kunnskapsgrunnlag om typologier for å beskrive urbane økosystem, indikatorer og status for urbant biologisk mangfold og økologisk tilstand, trusler, påvirkningsfaktorer og forventet fremtidig utvikling. Fokus var på litteratur om Norge supplert med litteratur om Sverige, Finland, Danmark, Tyskland, Storbritannia og Sveits. Litteraturstudiet er ikke fullstendig uttømmende. Basert på informasjonen vi fant, definerer vi kunnskapshull og behov for videre forskning. Litteraturstudiet startet med et nøkkelordsøk i Scopus og Web of Science. Der fant vi 8.115 mulig relevante fagfellevurderte dokumenter. Disse dokumentene ble videre filtrert på tematisk og geografisk relevans gjennom nøkkelord-søk i sammendragene og ved å lese disse. Det mindre utvalget ble videre sortert på relevans. De 52 mest aktuelle dokumentene ble lest nøye og inkludert i syntesen. Dette utvalget ble videre supplert med 14 dokumenter fra grålitteraturen og fagfellevurderte artikler som ikke ble fanget opp i første runde. Totalt ble 66 dokumenter gjennomlest og inkludert i syntesen. Rapporten er organisert rundt tre hovedtemaer: (1) Typologier som beskriver urbane økosystemer og omfang av urbant biologisk mangfold, (2) urban økosystemtilstand, og (3) forventet fremtidig utvikling. Urbane miljøer er konstruerte av og for mennesker. Til tross for at mange urbane grønne arealer og vann er konstruerte med sikte på menneskelig bruk, og til tross for at økosystemer bare kan ses på som urbane hvis de ligger i byer eller tettsteder, beskriver litteraturen om biologisk mangfold de urbane økosystemene som små lommer eller rester av natur i en urban matrise. Det er med bakgrunn i denne litteraturen vi beskriver urbane økosystemer, deres biologiske mangfold, økologiske tilstand og forventede fremtidige utvikling. Typologier som beskriver urbane økosystemer varierer i detaljnivå basert på informasjonsbehovet som de skal dekke. Noen typologier bygger på fin romlig oppløsning som inkluderer informasjon om arter og økosystemfunksjon, andre er mindre detaljerte. Indikatorer for biologisk mangfold inkluderer variabler som artsrikdom, abundans, tilstedeværelse av spesielle indikatorarter og indekser basert på flere variabler. Omfanget av det urbane artsmangfoldet, sammenlignet med lignende ikke-urbane økosystemer, kjennetegnes ved et lavere antall stedegne arter som over tid blir færre, og et stort og voksende antall fremmede arter. Urbane økosystemer er også kjent for å fungere som refugier for ulike arter og for eksklusive urbane habitater, slik som for eksempel brownspace (tidligere utbygd areal som ikke er i bruk i dag), noe som bidrar positivt til det totale artsmangfoldet. I tillegg bidrar urbane miljøer med viktige habitater for urbane spesialistarter. Økologisk tilstand i urbane grøntområder kjennetegnes ved homogeniserte artssamfunn, et økende antall fremmede arter, lav grad av konnektivitet og et høyt press fra menneskelig aktivitet, for eksempel i form av lyd og lysforurensing samt bruk av grøntareal. Urbane elver og bekker har i Norge vært mer påvirket av forurensing nedstrøms enn oppstrøms. Over tid har den økologiske tilstanden blitt bedre og i dag er den relativt god i norske urbane vann. De mest siterte truslene og påvirkningene på urbant biologisk mangfold er fortetting, fragmentering av habitater, forvaltningsintensitet, introduksjon av fremmede arter og klimaendringer. Kunnskapsmangler er knyttet til effektene av disse truslene på jordhelse, økosystemfunksjoner samt de komplekse interaksjonene mellom arter. Det var lite relevant vitenskapelig litteratur om forventet fremtidig utvikling av urbane økosystemer ut ifra en bestemt referansetilstand. De fleste forvalterne av urbane grøntarealer i nordiske byer forventet en økning i fremtidig antall og areal av grøntarealer. De forventet ikke økte budsjetter. Basert på pågående trender innen urbanisering og klima, vil presset på urbane grønt-arealer trolig øke. Kunnskap mangler om hva effektene av disse endringene vil bety for urbant biologisk mangfold og økosystemtilstand. Immerzeel, B. & Bredin, Y.K. 2022. Knowledge base for northern European urban ecosystems - Biological diversity, ecosystem condition and expected developments. NINA Report 2212. Norwegian Institute for Nature Research. This report presents an overview over the current knowledge base on typologies used for classifying urban ecosystems, indicators and status of urban biodiversity and ecosystem condition, threats, pressures, and expected future developments. Focus was on Norwegian literature complimented with information from Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. While this study is not fully comprehensive, it aims to identify knowledge gaps and needs for further research. Point of departure for the literature review was a keyword search within Scopus and Web of Science, yielding 8,115 potentially relevant peer-reviewed documents. This batch of literature was filtered on thematic and geographic relevance using further keyword searches and abstract reading. The narrower selection was grouped by relevance. The 52 most relevant documents were selected for close reading and synthesis. These were supplemented with 14 additional grey literature and peer-reviewed documents, found through complimentary searches. In total 66 doc-uments were used for the synthesis. The report is organised around three main themes: (1) Typologies for urban ecosystems and extent of urban biodiversity, (2) Urban ecosystem condition, and (3) Expected future developments. Urban environments are engineered by humans for humans. Despite many urban green areas, waterways and waterbodies being designed for human use, and even though ecosystems only could be urban if they form part of cities or towns, the biodiversity literature predominantly describes urban ecosystems as pockets or remnants of nature within an urban matrix. Based on this literature we describe urban ecosystems, their biodiversity, ecological condition, and expected future development. Typologies for urban ecosystems vary based on information need. Some have high spatial resolution and include information on potential biodiversity and ecosystem function while others are less detailed and exclude species information. Indicators for biodiversity include variables such as species richness, species abundance, the occurrence of specific indicator species, and indices based on multiple variables. The state of urban biodiversity is, compared to similar but non-urban ecosystems, typified by a lower and decreasing number of species, and a high fraction of alien species. However, urban ecosystems are also known to provide refugia and exclusively urban habitats, such as brown fields, that make important contributions to overall species diversity. Moreover, to urban specialists, urban ecosystems provide key habitats. The ecological condition of urban green spaces is characterized by homogenised communities, increasing numbers of alien species, low connectivity and high pressure from human activity, such as sound and noise pollution, as well as human use of greenspace. In Norway, downstream areas of urban rivers and streams have been more heavily affected by anthropogenic pollution than upstream areas. Over time the ecological condition has improved. Today urban aquatic environments are in relatively good condition. The most cited pressures and threats to urban biodiversity are densification, habitat fragmentation, intensive management, introduction of invasive species and climate change. Key knowledge gaps relate to the effects of these pressures on soil health, ecosystem function, and the complex interactions among species. The literature did not provide clear answers on future developments of urban biodiversity and ecosystem condition. Most managers of urban green spaces in the Nordic countries seem to expect an increase in future number and total area of green spaces. Conversely, they do not expect more funding. Based on current trends in urbanization and climate change, pressures on green areas are likely to increase. A knowledge gap exists in relation to what the effect of these pressures will be on urban biodiversity and ecosystem condition. Miljødirektoratet: M-2401|2022

Gundersen, V., Selvaag, S., Strand, O., Bredin, Y., Sandal, R. J. & Hermansen, P. 2019. Ferdsel i to fokusområder i Setesdal-Ryfylke villreinområde. Brokke-Suleskardvegen og Blåsjøområdet. NINA Rapport 1676. Norsk institutt for naturforskning. Denne rapporten oppsummerer data på ferdsel i Setesdal Ryfylkeheiene villreinområde (SVR) i perioden 2012 til 2018. Det ble tidlig i prosjektet bestemt at ferdselsregistreringene ikke skal omfatte hele villreinområdet, men derimot konsentrere innsatsen til to utvalgt fokusområder: Blåsjøområdet inkludert vegen inn til Store Urevatn og Brokke-Suleskardområdet (Fv45/337/987). Ferdselsundersøkelsene har gått parallelt med hovedprosjektet, og det er lagd årsrapporter og formidlet underveis i prosjektet. Det er utfordrende å registrere ferdsel på store fjellområder med ganske lav bruk. Vi har derfor valgt å bruke ulik metodikk for å skaffe til veie denne kunnskapen, og som dels utfyller hverandre til å gi en så langt som mulig komplett beskrivelse av ferdselen i fokusområdene. Dataene omfatter bruk av automatiske tellere på stier (2012-2018, fottur), samt på hovedveger (2013 -2014, biler, Statens Vegvesen) og grusveger (2012-2018, biler, syklister). Det er gjennomført spørreundersøkelser med skjema inne på turisthytta Øyuvsbu (2012-2015) og med manuell utdeling og 4 svarkasser langs vegen inn til Store Urevatn (2012). Det er registrert parkerte biler langs vegen over Brokke-Suleskard i 2013, 2014 og 2016. Det ble delt ut GPS sporloggere inn vegen til Store Urevatn i 2012. Observasjonsstudier er gjennomført langs Brokke-Suleskardvegen og vegen inn til Store Urevatn. I tillegg er det brukt sekundære data som for eksempel overnattingsstatistikk og STRAVA. Brokke – Suleskarvegen: Datasettene viser at det er i gjennomsnitt over 600 kjøretøy per døgn på vegen i løpet av sommersesongen. Mye er knyttet til feriereiser, og de reisende holder seg i stor grad til veien. Rasteplassen på Håhelleren brukes flittig til korte stopp. Det er mange små parkeringsplasser langs vegen, men det er noen få som er spesielt mye brukt slik som dammen Rosskreppfjorden og ved Øyuvsbu. Ferdselen i terrengene langs vegen er på et ganske lavt nivå (50 personer/dag inn til Øyuvsbu) i forhold til den trafikken som vegen genererer (5000-6000 biler). De som ferdes i terrenget er svært konsentrert til merka stinett. Ferdselen er konsentrert til områder rundt Håhelleren, og ikke minst ved Øyuvsbu. Øyuvsbu genererer mye ferdsel, fra parkeringsplassen og inn til hytta, og ellers ut på stinettet i retning øst, sør og vest fra hytta. Det er mange tilreisende besøkende til Øyuvsbu, og enkel tilgang gjør at det er en stor andel barnefamilier og ungdom. Brukerne er svært positive til tilrettelegging. I tillegg er mange på flerdagerstur og overnatter på Øyuvsbu, samt at de nesten utelukkende følger merka stier. De fleste besøker hytta/området for første gang. Blåsjøområdet: Det er mest omfattende data fra brukerne av vegen inn til Store Urevatn. Denne vegen har en stor overvekt av nordmenn, og 2/3 av alle brukere kommer også fra Agderfylkene. De aller fleste kjenner vegen fra før og har vært mange turer innover, og spesielt gjelder dette de lokale. Over 90 % er på dagstur inn vegen og nesten 70 % holder seg i nærheten av bilen eller innen 1 km fra bilen. Over 60 % svarer at vegen betyr svært mye for dem. Ferdselsmønsteret med at folk holder seg nær bilen bekreftes av observasjoner og GPS sporing av de som reiser innover med bil. Når det gjelder volum biler på vegen er denne ganske stabilt fra sesong til sesong, og ligger på ca. 3000-3500 biler som kjører inn og ut i løpet av sesongen eller ca. 30 biler om dagen i gjennomsnitt. Dette er et ganske høyt tall sammenlignet med andre tilsvarende fjellveger i Sør-Norge. Vegen inn til Førrevassdammen og Storevassdamen viser at det er en del syklister og gående som bruker disse, selv om det er langt inn i fjellet. Tilgangen til Storevassdammen med sykkel gir adgang videre inn i fjellet på merka stinett. Det er moderat ferdsel på stinettet rundt Storsteinen, men det er et tett stinett i den trange trekkpassasjen ved Steinbuskaret/Storsteinen. Overnattingsstatistikken på hyttene fanger ikke opp dagsturtrafikk og også i liten grad de som jakter, fisker eller ligger i telt i området. This report summarizes data on outdoor recreation and tourism in the Setesdal Ryfylkeheiene wild reindeer range (SVR) in the period 2012 to 2018. It was early in the project decided that the registrations of human use should not cover the entire wild reindeer range, but instead be concentrate to two selected focal areas: The Blåsjø area including the road to Store Urevatn and the Brokke-Suleskard area (Fv45 / 337/987). The surveys of human use have been done in parallel with the main project, and we have written annual reports and provide results to users during the project. It is challenging to register human use on large dispersed use mountain areas. We have thus focus on different methods to obtain this knowledge, and which partly complement each other to give as far as possible a complete description of the main human use of the areas. The data includes the use of automatic counters on trails (2012-2018, hiking), as well as counts on main roads (2013, 2014, 2017, cars,) and gravel roads (2012-2018, cars). Surveys have been carried out at the tourist cabin Øyuvsbu (2012-2015) and along the gravel road to Store Urevatn (2012). We monitored parked cars along the Brokke-Suleskard road in 2013, 2014 and 2016. GPS track logs were collected from the users of the road to Store Urevatn in 2012. Observation studies have been carried out along the Brokke-Suleskard road and the road to Store Urevatn. In addition, we use supplementary data such as overnight statistics at tourist cabins and STRAVA heatmaps. Brokke - Suleskarvegen: The datasets show that there are on average more than 600 vehicles a day passing on the road during the summer. Much is related to holiday vacations, and car-travellers largely used the road. The short picnic stop at Håhelleren is used intensively. There are many small parking spaces along the road, but there are a few that are particularly widely used such as the Rosskreppfjorden and in the Øyuvsbu area. The use of the terrain along the road is at quite low level compare to the heavily car-traffic that the road generates. Those who travel in the terrain mainly use marked trails. The traffic is concentrated in two areas: Håhelleren and Øyuvsbu. Øyuvsbu generates a lot of traffic, from the parking area and to the cabin, and on the trail network in different directions from the cabin. Øyuvsbu is intensively used, both daily visit and overnight stay, and is widely used by families with kids and youth. These users are in general positive about low amount of facilitation. The user of the cabin include both daytrips and multiday trip, and they almost exclusively follow marked trails. Most people visit the cottage / area for the first time. Blåsjø area: There a large majority of Norwegians who use the road to Store Urevatn, and 2/3 of all users also come from the Agder counties. The vast majority know abouot the road from before and have been visiting the area many times, and especially this applies to the locals. Over 90 % are on the day trip into the road and almost 70 % stay near the car or within 1 km of the car. In all, more than 60 % report that the road means a lot to them. The traffic pattern with people staying close to the car is confirmed by observations and GPS tracking. The volume cars are quite stable from season to season; approx. 3000-3500 cars during the season or approx. 30 cars a day on average. This is a fairly high figure compared to other similar mountain roads in southern Norway. The road to the Förrevassdammen and Storevassdammen shows that there are a number of cyclists and walkers who use these roads, even though it is far into the mountain. Access to Storevassdammen by bicyclist gives further access into the mountain on to use the marked trails. There is moderate traffic on the marked trail network around Storsteinen, but the marked trails are dense at the reindeer migration corridor at Steinbuskaret / Storsteinen. The overnight statistics on the cabins do not capture day-trip traffic and also to a small extent those who hunt, fish or lie in tents in the area.

Linnell, J. D. C., Kaltenborn, B., Bredin, Y. & Gjershaug, J. O. (2016) Biodiversity assessment of the Fagaras Mountains, Romania - NINA Report 1236. 86 pp. This report aims to summarise the existing knowledge concerning the biodiversity of the Fagaras Mountains, in the southern Carpathians of Romania. It is intended to provide a basis for an assessment of the ecosystem services that are being provided, and that could be provided, by the area. The Fagaras Mountains consist of an uninterrupted 70-80 km long ridge that reaches to over 2500 m in altitude, with many side ridges branching off, creating a highly variable topography. As well as containing Romanian's highest mountain, it also contains the largest area of continuous alpine zone habitat in Romania. The slopes are covered with spruce forests at higher altitudes and mixed deciduous forests at lower altitudes. At lower altitudes land-use gives way extensive low-intensity agriculture at the forest-farmland interface, and then more intensive agriculture where soils permit. Most of the mountain range is protected within two Natura 2000 sites that combine to an area of 2436 km2, and these adjoin several other Natura 2000 sites, and other Romanian protected areas. Our biodiversity assessment consisted of collecting existing data from published and unpublished sources. Over 72% of the area is forested, with the rest consisting of alpine grasslands (25%) and rock, scree and bogs. Some patches of virgin forest have been identified along the northern slopes of the mountain range, and many areas have not been surveyed. The biodiversity of the Fagaras Mountains has not been as well studied as in many of the neighbouring regions, however, it was still possible to build up a good preliminary species of species diversity for some species groups, including mammals (57 species), birds (130 species), amphibians (17 species), reptiles (13 species), fish (12 species), freshwater crayfish (2 species), butterflies and moths (563 species), beetles (125 species), dragonflies (15 species), spiders (40 species), water-bugs (22 species), water-mites (28 species), lichens (144 species) and plants (895 species). For other species groups such as fungi (19 species), snails (6 species) and crickets (2 species) there is clearly a lot more registration to do before these species lists will become complete. Of these species, a total of 107 are of EU community interest, being listed on either the Habitats Directive or the Birds Directive. Many of the species are also on the national Romanian red list. In terms of its size, species diversity, and ecological integrity the Fagaras Mountains are clearly an area with a very high biodiversity value. The majority of the records we found come from only two areas that have been comparatively well studied (Sinca Noua and the Upper Dambovita river basin). As a result, further studies of new areas andother species groups are clearly going to lead to an increase in the areas known diversity. Most of the area is subject to multiple human land uses, such as forestry, hunting, livestock grazing, the gathering of berries and mushrooms and low-intensity agriculture. These have formerly been conducted with low intensity and in ways that have been largely compatible with biodiversity conservation. However, recent trends have been towards an intensification of all human activities in recent years, most visibly shown by the introduction of poorly regulated clearcutting of forests. In addition, the area has been subject to a lot of poorly planned development, such as small scale hydro-electric plants, second homes and tourist infrastructure. There is therefore a desperate need to establish land-use zoning plans and guidelines for practices (forestry, hunting, livestock grazing, gathering of non-timber forest products, infrastructure development, agriculture) that are compatible with the conservation objectives of the Natura 2000 site. While the urgency of the situation requires that this work start at once to avoid irreversible changes, a great deal of further work to map habitats and species is needed in order to fine tune management guidelines for the specific human activities and land-uses. Sammendrag Denne rapporten oppsummerer eksiterende kunnskap om det biologisk mangfoldet i Fagaras fjellene, i de sørlige Karpatene, Romania. Rapporten har til hensikt å fungere som et grunnlag for å vurdere både de økosystemtjenestene som er utnyttet, og de som kan bli utnyttet i området. Fagaras fjellene består av en 70-80 km lang uavbrutt fjellkjede som strekker seg til over 2500 meter over havet, som har mange siderygger som forgreiner seg. Dette skaper en svært variabel topografi. Her finnes det høyeste fjellet i Romania, og det største sammenhengende området med alpint habitat i Romania. Fjellsidene er dekket med granskog i høyereliggende områder og blandet lauvskog i lavereliggende områder. I de lavereliggende områdene er det både lavintensivt landbruk, og et mer intensivt jordbruk der jordsmonnet tillater det. Størsteparten av fjellkjeden er vernet i to Natura 2000 områder. Vår evaluering av biodiversiteten bestod av å samle eksisterende data fra publiserte og upubliserte kilder. Mer enn 72 % av arealet er skogkledd, og det resterende arealet består av gressletter (25 %), stein, ur og myrer. Noen flekker av urskog er identifisert langs de nordlige skråningene av fjellkjeden, men store områder har ikke blitt kartlagt. Biodiversiteten har ikke blitt like godt studert i Fagaras fjellene som i mange av naboregionene. Det var likevel mulig å lage en god oversikt over artsmangfoldet for enkelte artsgrupper, inkludert pattedyr (57 arter), fugler (130 arter), amfibier (17 arter), reptiler (13 arter), fisk (12 arter), ferskvannskreps (2 arter), sommerfugler og møll (563 arter), biller (125 arter), øyenstikkere (15 arter), edderkopper (40 arter), teger (22 arter), vannmidder (28 arter), lav (144 arter) og planter (895 arter). For andre artsgrupper som sopp (19 arter), snegler (6 arter) og sirisser (2 arter), så er det behov for mye mer registrering før artslistene er komplette. Av artene som er funnet i området, er 107 listet på enten EUs habitatdirektivet eller fugledirektivet. Mange av artene er også på den nasjonale rumenske rødlista. I forhold til sin størrelse, artsmangfold og økologisk integritet så er Fagaras fjellene uten tvil et område med høy verdi for biologisk mangfold. Flertallet av artsregistering som vi fant kommer fra to områder som er relativt godt undersøkt (Sinca Noua og Upper Damouvitavassdraget). Dersom det utføres lignende undersøkelser i andre områder i fjellkjeden, kan det forventes store forbedringer i artslisten for området. Ved nyregistreringer bør det også fokuseres på andre taksonomiske grupper av stor betydning som for eksempel bier, veps og maur Landskapet i området er i stor grad påvirket av mennesker i form av skogbruk, jakt, beite, høsting av bær og sopp og lavintensivt landbruk. Dette har tidligere blitt utført med lav intensitet og på måter som i stor grad er forenelig med bevaring av biologisk mangfold. I de senere år har trenden gått mot en økning av menneskskapt aktiviteter. Dette er er mest synlig i form av dårlig regulering av hogstflater. I tillegg har utviklingen , som for eksempel småskala vannkraftanlegg, fritidsboliger og infrastruktur i forbindelse med turisme, i området vært dårlig planlagt og har ført til negativ innvirkning på biodiversiteten. Det er et stort behov for å etablere reguleringsplaner for arealene og retningslinjer for ulike aktiviteter (skogbruk, jakt, husdyr beite, innsamling av sopp og bær, konstruksjon, landbruk), som er forenlige med verneformålet i Natura 2000 områdene. Alvoret i situasjonen krever at dette arbeidet starter med en gang for å unngå irreversible endringer. Det gjenstår også mye arbeid i å kartlegge naturtyper og arter, som er nødvendig for å kunne utvikler detaljert retningslinjer for forvaltningen av de spesifikke menneskelige aktivitetene og arealbruken. © Norsk institutt for naturforskning. This study was undertaken as part of a larger research project on jaguar conservation and environmental justice financed by the Norwegian Research Council and led by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA, Norway) Estación Biológica de Doñana (EBD-CSIC, Spain), the Jaguar Conservation Fund (JCF, Brazil), and in collaboration with the Norwegian University for Life Sciences (UMB, Norway). This paper constitutes the final work for my (Yennie Bredin) master degree in Tropical Ecology and Management of Natural Resources at UMB. A stakeholder analysis was conducted to study attitudes towards jaguar (Panthera onca) conservation in Brazil and identify areas of conflict and agreement between different stakeholder institutions. In my study I defined stakeholders as any institution that directly or indirectly influenced jaguars, were influenced by jaguars, or both. I limited the spatial scope of the study to the states of Goias and Mato Grosso, in central Brazil, and used Q methodology to explore which institutional actors grouped together and on what issues. The Q analysis was complimented by an “interest-influence” analysis to further explore how the different institutional actors perceived their own interest in, and impact on, jaguar conservation, as well as that of the other institutional actors under scrutiny. From the Q analysis I identified three different narratives which could be described as A; anti-hunting and pro-conservation, B; ecocentric and C; tolerant-towards-jaguars. The three prevailing groups of stakeholders whose opinions constituted these narratives were characterised by institutions linked to government and social movements for the “anti-hunting, pro-conservation” narrative (A), research for the “ecocentric” narrative (B) and cattle farming for the “tolerant-towards-jaguars” narrative (C). Although the jaguar’s right to exist in Brazil was fundamental to all three narratives and the over all level of agreement among the narratives was remarkable, there were also significant differences that could be important for successful jaguar conservation. Hunting in general and jaguar hunting in particular were very controversial issues among the narratives. Also the jaguar’s ecological role, where jaguars should be allowed to survive and the impacts of hydropower were topics that caused disagreement among the narratives. My findings suggest that jaguar conservation potentially could be symbolic of other social or political divisions in central Brazil. Results from the interest-influence analysis, although mixed, further suggested that the power relationships between stakeholder institutions were unclear. There was a clear mismatch in perceptions between institutional actors, suggesting that the understandings between actors of their different roles, with respect to jaguars, were poor. These results are worrying, yet not necessarily surprising considering the very broad spectrum of institutions that were involved in the stakeholder analysis. However, the possible implications this holds for jaguars and their conservation could be serious. If the more important stakeholder institutions do not appreciate their roles in jaguar preservation, or do not understand who the other important players are, they may not adequately assume their responsibilities, cooperate with the appropriate partners or take adequate actions with respect to jaguars.
