To what extent was the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) able to serve as an instance of legitimization of the military dictatorship established in Brazil after the 1964 coup? This article aims to examine a specific aspect of the daily life of this institution during the military dictatorship: the investiture ceremonies. We believe that this approach allows us to analyze how politics could operate “apolitically” within the ABL. We argue that ceremonies may have become political events because it showed, first of all, the proximity and networks of sociability between the conservative intelligentsia and the regime. Secondly, we identified the transmission of values in some speeches that were, at that time, those of the conservative environment. The examination of the investiture ceremonies indicates that the ABL contributed to legitimize the regime which was established in Brazil in 1964. However, this legitimization did not take place through an open “collaboration”, but by the behavior of all its members, their proximity to the representatives of the regime and the diffusion and circulation of a conservative discourse.

The aim of this article is to analyze the relationship between intellectuals and power from the perspective of the interests and rewards that both sides were able to obtain from a collaboration. To do so, we analyze a specific case, which occurred during the military dictatorship (1964-1985), and involves the donation of a piece of land, as well as a loan to construct a building granted by the military regime to the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL). The analysis enables us to shed new light on the relationship between conservative intellectuals and the Brazilian military regime. In the first segment, we retrace the trajectory of Austregésilo de Athayde, a journalist who presided over the institution between 1959 and 1994 and played a vital role in this donation and in financing the construction of the building. In the second segment, we detail how this process took place and how it provides a new angle with which to analyze the relationship of conservative intellectuals and the military dictatorship in Brazil.

This article presents the result of a research on the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) during the military dictatorship. It aims to analyse to what extent this supposedly apolitical institution served as an instance of legitimation for the regime. The article examines the way the “immortals” sought to build a memory of the “heroes of the Nation”. In doing so, they extolled important values to the regime as civility and patriotism. The option for this perspective allowed to restore the complexity and ambiguity of the relations between the ABL and the regime established in Brazil in 1964.

Studying the right wing – or, in a broader sense, conservatism – in Brazil is not an easy task. This is even more the case when it comes to the field of culture, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. The undeniable rise of the left in artistic creation overshadowed a conservative cultural elite that was, however, very active from the Vargas dictatorship until the military regime. Identifying the intellectuals of this elite from the itineraries of its members, their networks and their spaces of sociability is the first objective of this article. The second is to draw a profile of these little known or forgotten actors of Brazilian politics in the 1960s and 1970s. For this, we conducted a case study: a prosopography of members of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, between 1961 and 1979, thereby identifying places of birth, social origins, research undertaken, activities performed, places of sociability frequented, and political and administrative positions held. In addition to revealing a significant sector of the Brazilian intellectual field of the 1960s and 1970s – coming largely from the same generation, which we designate here the « generation of 1922 », best known for its role in the cultural renewal of the 1920s and their participation in Vargas’s dictatorship – the use of prosopography allowed us to capture the formation of this network and give a more detailed view of the relationships between its members, on the one hand, and to political power, on the other.

The Brazilian Academy of Letters emerged as an environment resistant to the presence of women. Although it was unthinkable during its first eighty years of existence, the question of "feminine eligibility" did make the agenda of some of the academic sessions. The present article seeks to shed light on this issue by taking a backstage look at two key episodes, from 1911 and 1930, respectively: the consideration of the philologist Carolina Michaëlis as a candidate to the board of non-effective members of the House of Machado de Assis and the official candidacy of Amélia Beviláqua, the first woman to vie for a seat among the effective members of the academy.

Tendo isto em vista, o presente artigo pretende analisar os bastidores do ingresso de Rachel de Queiroz, primeira mulher a sagrar-se imortal, em 1977.The Brazilian Academy of Letters, an institute established in 1897, remained untouched by the feminine presence up to the year 1976, when clause 17 of its Regulations, which until then had restricted itself to "Brazilians of the masculine sex", was modified to allow women the possibility of candidacy. Hence, the objective of this article is to analyze the behind the scenes of the admission of Rachel de Queiroz, the first woman to take part in the writers' "immortal" circle in 1977.

Abstract This text includes three short texts about Machado de Assis by Austregésilo de Athayde, originally published in the daily press. In "Machado de Assis, Man of Action", from 1939, the critic asks himself whether the writer could be a role model for the youth; in "The Humanity of Machado de Assis", from 1955, the author bases his considerations on The Unknown Machado de Assis, by Magalhães Júnior; and in the interview "Machado de Assis Experienced the Concerns of His Time", from 1958, he observes the centrality of "the Wizard of Cosme Velho" in the Brazilian literary system.

- Abstract
This article aims to analyze the role of women intellectuals and writers during the thirties and forties in Brazil, focusing on the novelist Tetrá de Teffé and his work Bati à porta da vida, awarded in 1941 with the Machado Assis Award. On the one hand, we study the literary canon as an eminently patriarchal space, and thus we seek to understand the existing conflicts regarding the entry of women into the pantheon of immortals, the Brazilian Academy of Letters. On the other hand, through the weekly magazine O Malho, we examine discourses constructed by the press and by the intellectuals women to claim their participation in a place of cultural consecration. In this article, then, there are forgotten lives of brilliant women who were important actors in the Brazilian political, social and cultural arena, but ended up in the basement of history and the literary canon. Among these women is Tetrazzini de Almeida Nobre de Teffé, a Brazilian writer of great prestige during the first decades of the 20th century.

This article aims to analyze to what extent the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) could have served as a legitimizing institution for the Brazilian military dictatorship. The analysis focuses on the ABL’s everyday life practices in order to recover the complexity and ambiguity of its relation with the regime established in 1964. Thus, we analyzed the visits received by the academics as well as the speeches announced on those occasions; the votes of condolence made by academics to the family members of personalities who had died; and the values that were exalted in the construction of the memory of those great men. The analysis has shown that the ABL contributed to legitimizing the regime through an intense sociability among “immortals” and representatives of the regime and the diffusion of shared values between them, specifically those of patriotism and public spirit. This text is the inaugural speech of the president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, given on December 14, 2017, in which the past and present are revisited in the voices of authors and texts and the future is projected in desires and dreams. The dream for Brazil is that of a book under construction. A book of many authors, with many angles, mirrored, where each individual can be recognized in its pages, as Lima Barreto and Machado de Assis did. As if it were the mantle of Arthur Bispo do Rosário. A total cartography. A memory of all, in all.

The Brazilian Academy of Letters, established in 1897, remained untouched by the feminine presence up to 1976, in which year the 17 clause of the Internal Regulation, which until then had restricted the election to “Brazilians of the masculine sex”, was modified to assure the women the possibility of candidacy. In 1977, the first woman to take part in the writers’ immortal circle is Rachel de Queiroz, whose admission raised a true aesthetic debate around the ceremonial uniform, which during the first eighty years of existence of the institution was designed exclusively for men. At this occasion, the Academy was transformed into a true “fashion arena”, in whichundeniable impasses and embarrassing situations around the gender prerogatives abounded, as this article intends to elucidate.
