Abstract

The present work was undertaken to develop a basic and simple protocol for micropropagation of Ceratonia siliqua. Axillaries bud sprouting and shoot development were stimulated on MS supplemented with BAP (0.5 mg.l-1), IBA (0.1 mg.l-1) and GA3 (0.5 mg.l-1), shoot multiplication was obtained on MS supplemented with BAP (2 mg.l-1) and rooting of microshoots was achieved on MS supplemented with IBA (2 mg.l-1) and charcoal (2 mg.l-1). The best results were obtained with herbaceous explants taken from juvenile trees. Significant differences in proliferation, multiplication and rooting due to the type and origin of explant and to the concentration of growth regulators were found.

Abstract

Summary Amussat's sign is a transverse laceration of the intimal layer of the carotid arteries. It is known to be strongly suggestive of hanging. The discovery of this sign in a body recovered from water can arise several questions from a legal point of view. In this paper, we report a case of a drowned body with Amussat's sign. A 41 year-old man was found dead face down in a ten-meter-deep well with a water level of four meters. He has medical history of psychiatric illness and he has stopped his medication in the preceding period. Autopsy revealed Amussat's sign at the level of the two carotid arteries. The medico-legal value and the mechanism of this sign will be discussed.

Abstract

Selection and improvement of crops subjected to salinity constitutes an urgent need for increasing agricultural and food production in order to feed the growing human population. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the role of salicylic acid (SA) application in mitigating the adverse effects of salinity on faba bean (Vicia faba L.) at the physiological and molecular levels. Fort this purpose, two faba bean genotypes were subjected to various concentrations of NaCl and salicylic acid in a full factorial design. After that, growth, water status, gas exchanges, photosynthesis parameters, ions homeostasis and antioxidant enzymes activities were evaluated. The obtained results demonstrated that salinity induced several limitations in plants growth and physiological attributes. In response, salt stressed faba bean plants improved water status and enhanced antioxidant enzymatic activities. Remarkably, salt-tolerance of both genotypes was significantly improved by salicylic acid application which allowed the maintenance of cell membrane and photosynthetic process, restoring of ion homeostasis and the diminution of oxidative damages. Overall, the difference between genotypes is rather quantitative than qualitative even if the genotype Aguadulce displayed better growth, physiological and molecular response under salt stress than the genotype Histal. Besides, the beneficial effects of salicylic acid vary according to its concentration, the tested genotype and the studied parameter; the genotype Aguadulce performs better under the treatment with 0.5 mM SA while the genotype Histal manifests greater behaviour under the treatment with 1 mM SA. Therefore, salicylic acid can be considered as potential growth regulator to improve the salt response of faba bean. The application of salicylic acid would provide a practical basis for wide cultivation of faba bean in marginal and wastelands under-cultivated and might propose an effective ecological and economical alternative solu

Abstract

Background: The early and accurate diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction may be a challenging task for doctors in the emergency room. The patient’s history, electrocardiographic and cardiac markers data are sometimes non diagnostic and misleading which may lead to death. In this case, physician’s responsibility may be engaged. Case report: A 48-year-old man was admitted in the Emergency Department because of chest pain. Exploration (Percritical ECG, enzymatic levels and transthoracic echocardiogram) did not show any abnormality. He received a symptomatic treatment and was allowed to return home. The patient was confined to bed during his stay at home because of persisting chest pain. Two days later, he presented syncope and arrived dead to hospital. At autopsy, an abundant hemopericardium made by coagulated blood was noted, associated with an obstruction of the circumflex of about 90% of its light. A rupture of the myocardium was repaired in the lateral wall of left ventricle, surrounded by a semi recent infarction. Discussion: The peculiarity of this case is the difficulty of the diagnosis of the myocardial infarction because of the normality of the enzymatic assessment and the absence of electric modifications during the crisis and two hours later. Misdiagnosed cases can lead health professionals to legal suits. The claims about diagnostic error can be usually subject to trials in both of penal judgment and compensation trial.

Abstract

Phenotypic Diversity of some Populations of Rosmary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) in Tunisia. The phenotypic diversity of five rosmary populations was estimated by the analysis of 10 morphological characters. The principal component (ACP) and the discriminante (DISC) analysis performed on the chosen characters have shown a strong inter-population heterogeneity linked to the different eco-geographic origins. However the variability is continuous in the prospected area. The observed variations can be exploited in the species improvement program.

Abstract

The lifetime of a photovoltaic module operating in natural environment may never be known. It is useful to look for mathematical laws that are reliable in predicting the approximate warranty and performance times of these instruments before they fail. Literature is rich of many laws (parametric, semi-parametric or non-parametric) that have a high efficiency in all scientific branches. Parametric laws are used more than others in the branches of electronics. In this paper, we examined the validity of some reliability laws (15 models) to simulate the degradation of the maximum electrical power of crystalline silicon photovoltaic modules and to estimate their lifetimes when exposed to Saharan environments (especially the Sahara of Adrar in the South West of Algeria and the desert of California in the United States of America) where the climate is generally warm and dry during half a year. A genetic algorithm (a method of artificial intelligence) has been used here to calculate the parameters of each tested model. The modified Weibul model is the most adequate one compared to the other parametric models tested. In this study, the average lifespan of photovoltaic modules in the desert of California has been estimated to approximately 30 years (29 years for Adrar) for which the electrical energy supplied reaches 46% of its initial value. 26. Genetic diversity of North African Thymus algeriensis in Tunisia: Population structure and implication for conservation

Abstract

The genetic diversity within and among nine natural populations of Thymus hirtus Willd. subsp. algeriensis (Boiss. et Reut.) Murb. from different geographical and bioclimatic zones were assessed using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA data. A total of 154 bands were generated from seven selected primers. 141 bands were polymorphic (P=91.56%). The genetic diversity within a population based on Shannon's index which was high (H' pop=0.307) and varied according to bioclimatic zones. Ahigh genetic differentiation among populations (G ST=0.335 and F{cyrillic} ST=0.296) was revealed, suggesting a population isolation and a low level of gene flow among them. The major proportion of the variation was attributable to individual differences within populations. The genetic structure is in accordance with geography distances. The Neighbour- joining tree based on Nei's and Li's genetic distance among individuals showed that individuals from each population clustered together. The UPGMA dendrogram based on F{cyrillic} ST values revealed three clusters each of them includes populations closuring to their geographical origin. The high genetic structure of populations resulted from genetic drift caused both by the habitat fragmentation and the low size of most populations. The in situ conservation should interest all populations. Abstract

A comparative study of essential oil composition, polyphenol content and antioxidant activities of Lavandula coronopifolia, Lavandula multifida and Lavandula stoechas subsp. stoechas were reported. Qualitative and quantitative variations in the composition of oils according to species were shown. Lavandula coronopifolia's oil was characterised by high proportions of trans-β-ocimene (26.9%), carvacrol (18.5%), β-bisabolene (13.1%) and myrcene (7.5%). The main components of L. multifida oil are carvacrol (65.1%) and β-bisabolene (24.7%). Lavandula stoechas oil is rich in fenchone (34.3%) and comphor (27.4%). The total phenolic and flavonoid contents also significantly varied among species. Lavandula coronopifolia exhibits the highest phenolic and flavonoid contents (31.3 mg GAE g−1 and 16.3 mg RE g−1, respectively), followed by L. multifida (30.8 mg GAE g−1 and 12.3 mg RE g−1). Methanolic extracts and essential oils displayed significant antioxidant activities. The level of antioxidant capacity varied according to extracts and species. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Sixteen Tunisian natural populations of Hypericum humifusum from different bioclimates (sub-humid, upper semi-arid and lower semi-arid) were assessed for their genetic diversity using nine isozymes. For all populations and all enzymes, 11 polymorphic loci were detected. The allelic frequencies varied according to the populations. A high genetic diversity and an excess of heterozygosity were observed within populations (Ap = 2.02; P% = 64.29; Ho = 0.321). The outbreeding mating system and the high number of individuals in the starting populations may contribute to this high variation. A relatively high level of differentiation (FST = 0.142) and a restricted gene flow among populations (Nm =1.34) were revealed. The lower semi-arid populations showed the highest differentiation (FST = 0.205). The relationship between FST and geographic distance matrices was not significant, indicating that the genetic structure among populations is more closely linked to habitat fragmentation and probably to founder events. Nei's unbiased genetic distances among pairs of populations were low (0.012-0.119). The unweighted pair group method with arithmetic averaging algorithm cluster based on these distances showed four sub-clusters. Population groupings had no evident relationship with bioclimates or geographic regions. The substantial differentiation between populations and their high genetic similarity suggest their recent divergence as a result of habitat fragmentation. Most of the total variation was found within populations, thus ex-situ conservation should be based on sampling seeds within, rather than among, populations. 47. Plant regeneration via somatic embryogenesis from in vitrotissue culture in two Tunisian Cucumis melocultivars Maazoun and Beji

Abstract

Hypocotyl, cotyledon and zygotic embryo explants from two Tunisian Cucumis meloL. cultivars Beji and Maazoun, cultured on the MS medium added with 2,4-D(0.25–1 mg l−1) and BA (0.10–0.50 mg l−1), produce calluses with somatic embryos after 3 weeks of culture. For Beji c.v. the highest percentage (62.50%) of embryogenesis was observed for cotyledons. The average embryo number per callus was 10.40. Embryogenesis induction for zygotic embryos reached 33.50% with 29 embryos per callus. The embryogenesis ability of hypocotyls did not exceed 12.50% (2.50 embryos per callus). Somatic embryogenesis for Maazoun c.v. explants was less efficient. Embryos formation was observed only for cotyledons (29%) and zygotic embryos (25%). Cotyledonary staged embryos, when transferred to hormone free MS medium, germinated. The maximum germination rates were 51.50 and 44.50%, respectively for Maazoun and Beji c.v. The highest percentage (36.50%) of survival plants was noted for Beji c.v. Abstract

Background: Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare life-threatening finding with a challenging diagnosis which is largely ignored in the literature. Hematological disorders such as afibrinogenemia are reported to cause bleeding disorders mostly cerebral hemorrhage. Despite being a life-threatening condition, data about spontaneous splenic rupture in patients with Afibrinogenemia remain scarce. Such fatal incidents should warrant diligent efforts to establish and adopt prevention measures in this particularly vulnerable population. We report two new cases of spontaneous splenic rupture in two siblings, diagnosed with congenital afibrinogenemia since early childhood. In addition, we report the results of a systematic review of the literature of cases that have reported the occurrence of splenic rupture in afibrinogenemia, with the aim of filling the gap in the clinical course of such an uncommon event., Methods: We conduced a systematic review of English and French language publications cataloged in Pubmed, and Google Scholar up to December 2022. We opted to include articles written in other languages if an English language abstract was available and contained the information needed for our report. The following MeSH (medical subject heading) search criteria were used: ''splenic rupture'' AND ''afibrinogenemia.'' The above search strategy was further combined with a supplementary strategy that included the MeSH terms ''spleen'', AND ''rupture'' AND ''Afibrinogenemia''. In order to reduce the selection bias in searching on the Google Scholar database, we searched for articles containing these MeSH terms in their titles., Results: We reported two cases of splenic rupture in two family members who were diagnosed with afibrinogenemia at the age of 1 year. The splenic rupture was misdiagnosed by clinicians in the brother's case, resulting in his death and presenting as a forensic case. However, the sister underwent a splenectomy one week before her brother's death following the onset of asthenia and acute abdominal pain. Then we conducted a literature review of relevant studies of spontaneous splenic rupture in Afibrinogenemia. A selection of 13 relevant studies was included in the final review, describing a total of 25 cases of spontaneous splenic rupture in Afibrinogenemia. One paper was an international cross-sectional study across 25 different countries involving 211 patients with fibrinogen disorders, showing that 11 patients with afibrinogenemia had developed spontaneous splenic rupture. The remaining 12 articles were case reports or case series, describing a total of 14 cases of atraumatic splenic rupture in afibrinogenemia, ranging from 0 to 28 years old, with a median age of 14.5 years, where the majority were infants (age inferior to 18) with the most cases occurred in the age group of 10-15 years old., Conclusion: Congenital afibrinogenemia is a rare disease with a wide range of clinical symptoms and with challenging management. While the most common presenting symptoms are bleeding and thrombosis, spontaneous spleen rupture is rare and probably underdiagnosed which consequently may lead to death.
