Plant acclimation to varying light environments can enhance productivity. However, limited research exists on how plants re-acclimate to sunlight after shading, despite the increasing use of transient crop shading techniques to mitigate climate change impacts. This study focused on grapevine, a species highly responsive to shade, to explore the effects of prolonged shading on photosynthetic re-acclimation of plants upon sun re-exposure. An experiment was conducted using pot-grown plants subjected to different shading durations and then transferred to sunlight conditions. Results varied depending on whether leaves developed under sun or shade and on the duration of shading. Under shade, stomatal conductance decreased by up to 50%, while photosynthesis was reduced by 30-60%, with longer shading periods causing a greater decrease. Upon sun re-exposure of shaded plants, sun-developed leaves gradually reached 100% of the stomatal conductance of sun-control plants, but their photosynthesis remained at 70%. Despite reduced photosynthesis, analyses of non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) contents revealed that carbohydrate pools were maintained in shaded leaves, likely due to reduced carbon demand by plant sinks under shade. The maintenance of NSC limited optimal photosynthetic recovery upon sunlight re-exposure. In contrast, shade-developed leaves did not increase photosynthesis upon transfer to sunlight due to irreversible morphological changes. The aims of this work were to quantify (i) the effect of the source:sink ratio on stem water potential (SWP) and (ii) the phenotypic plasticity of SWP and its relationship to oil yield components in olive. Trees with a 3-fold variation in the source:sink ratio (crown volume/fruit number per tree) were monitored in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 in a fully irrigated orchard in Mendoza, Argentina. The combination of rainfall, irrigation, and evaporative demand led to a steady SWP largely above -1.65 MPa in 2007-2008 and a marked seasonal decline from -1.13 MPa to -2.04 MPa in trees with a medium and low source:sink ratio in 2008-2009. Plasticity was quantified as the slope of the norm of reaction for each trait. Across seasons, trees with a high source:sink ratio had a higher SWP than their counterparts with a medium and low source:sink ratio. Plasticity of SWP was highest in olives with a low source:sink ratio (slope=1.28) and lowest for trees with a high source:sink ratio (slope=0.76). The average SWP for each source:sink ratio and season was unrelated to both the source:sink ratio and yield components. On the other hand, the plasticity of SWP was positively associated with fruit number and negatively associated with the source:sink ratio, fruit weight, and fruit oil weight. The plasticity of the SWP was unrelated to SWP per se. It is concluded that understanding the effect of the source:sink ratio on plant water relations would benefit from a dual perspective considering the trait per se and its plasticity. A dual approach would also allow for more robust plant-based indicators for irrigation.

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) accounts for 1 to 7% of all strokes. In France, the range of incidence of SAH varies between 3 and 8/100,000 inhabitants. Global mortality lies around 40%, including 70% during the first week. The size of more than 90% of all aneurysms is less than 10 mm. In more than 90% of the patients; SAH is sporadic and a familial screening is warranted only after SAH occurring in 2 first-degree relatives. The main risk factors of SAH are tobacco, arterial hypertension and alcohol abuse. Genetic susceptibility may exist: it could involve several genes, the expression of which would characterize pathophysiological pathways implicated in the disease. This could be identified using genomic technique of microarrays, which could explore all the genome, simply using a sample of peripheral venous blood. For example, in the future, this approach could help to identify patients who are at high risk to develop vasospasm after SAH.

Congenital bilateal absence of the vas deferens (CBAVD) with obstructive azoospermia is a congenital reproductive disorder that affects one in 10000 male individuals. The observation that many men presenting with CBAVD have mutations in their CFTR genes had led to the proposal that CBAVD may be a primary genital form of cystic fibrosis. We report here one novel mutation located in exon 10 of the CFTR gene. This mutation, named D513G (A-->G at position 1670), has been found in one of 83 patients with CBAVD from France, the analysis of exon 10 using a chemical clamp DGGE assay allowed us to identify three CF mutations AEF508 (37/166; 22%), AE1507 (1/166; 0/6%) and D513G (1/166; 0.6%), and two variants M470V and E528E (1716 G>A). The novel D513G mutation has not been found in more than 200 non-CF chromosomes and in a sample of 300 CF chromosomes from French classical CF patients.

The semantic-priming paradigm was used to investigate the effect of semantic context on the latency to identify visually ambiguous and unambiguous targets. Ambiguous targets had reversible figure-ground organizations analogous to Rubin's vase-profiles picture in which the figural vase is shaped by the same contour that, if reassigned, shapes two figural profiles. The two organizations of the ambiguous targets were either a series of black irregular shapes or a familiar word in white letters; subjects were required to achieve the latter organization. Unambiguous target words were not reversible. Related primes, unlike unrelated primes, facilitated the identification of both types of target; but the magnitude of facilitation was greater for ambiguous targets. The results demonstrate that semantic context influences the speed of figure-ground organization and add perceptual ambiguity to the target manipulations that interact with context to affect encoding.

In the standard version of the Poggendorff figure a transversal intersects two parallel verticals and the segment of the transversal between the two intersection points, A and B, is not shown. The two portions of the transversal outside the parallels then seem to be misaligned. Besides this illusion of direction, there is also an illusion of size, the distance AB being underestimated in the standard figure. The influence of configural components in determining this spatial distortion of the Poggendorff figure was examined by having subjects reproduce the inner oblique (at 45 degrees) extent AB in variations of the figure. This distance was found to be underestimated in Poggendorff variations which contained parallel (vertical) components that formed an acute angle with AB; and the underestimation increased as the number of these components present in the figure increased. The distance AB was found not be significantly distorted in figures which contained only those parallel (vertical) components that formed an obtuse angle with AB, yet their presence in the figure tended to counteract the underestimation. When the transversals were omitted, the underestimation was found to increase. The findings are interpreted in support of an explanation that reduces the Poggendorff effect to those factors which mediate the Müller-Lyer illusion.

The assumed role of peripheral distortion mechanisms in both wings-in and wings-out Müller-Lyer illusions was investigated by requiring subjects to reproduce the central extent of standard Müller-Lyer figures and dot variations. Illusory magnitude of the line and dot variations was also examined with increasing wing length and wing angle. A reduction in the overestimation for the wings-out illusion occurred with the removal of intersecting lines; the dot variations evidenced a significant overestimation effect. In contrast, no reliable decrease in underestimation was found with the removal of intersecting lines in the wings-in illusion, and both standard and dot variations were significantly underestimated. These results support a conclusion that the wings-in and wings-out Müller-Lyer illusions are two distinct illusions, and may be differentially determined at the loci of distortion within the visual system. Parallel changes in illusory magnitude were noted with configural manipulations of standard and dot wings-out illusions. However, standard and dot forms of the wings-in illusion were not equivalently affected by equivalent configural manipulations, which suggests that they are different illusions. Thus, the use of the wings-in dot variation to separate empirically peripheral from non-peripheral distortion mechanisms may be ill-advised.

Previous investigations have shown that the magnitude of the Müller-Lyer illusion is a function of the linear and angular dimensions of the figure. If the Müller-Lyer and Poggendorff illusions share a common basis, then the magnitude of the Poggendorff illusion should similarly be a function of the analogous configural dimensions. A study is reported in which changes were made in the dimensions of the Poggendorff figure that are analogous to the dimensions of the Müller-Lyer figure: the length of the parallel components (analogous to the wings of the Müller-Lyer figure); the length of the intertransversal extent (analogous to Müller-Lyer shaft length); and the angle formed between the parallel components and the intertransversal extent (analogous to the angle of wing attachment in the Müller-Lyer figure). The relationship between the magnitude of the illusion and the dimensions of the Poggendorff figure was found to be generally in line with previous findings relating to the Müller-Lyer illusion. Adaptation-level theory and the positive-context model accommodate the major findings of the present study.
