We study fermions at quantum criticality with extremely retarded interactions of the form $V(\omega_l)=(g/|\omega_l|)^\gamma$, where $\omega_l$ is the transferred Matsubara frequency. This system undergoes a normal-superconductor phase transition at a critical temperature $T=T_c$. The order parameter is the frequency-dependent gap function $\Delta(\omega_n)$ as in the Eliashberg theory. In general, the interaction is extremely retarded for $\gamma\gg 1$, except at low temperatures $\gamma>3$ is sufficient. We evaluate the normal state specific heat, $T_c$, the jump in the specific heat, $\Delta(\omega_n)$ near $T_c$, and the Landau free energy. Our answers are asymptotically exact in the limit $\gamma\to\infty$. At low temperatures, we prove that the global minimum of the free energy is nondegenerate and determine the order parameter, the free energy, and the specific heat. These answers are exact for $T\to0$ and $\gamma>3$. We study the manifestation of the Nernst effect in the Corbino disk subjected to the normal external magnetic field and to the radial temperature gradient. The Corbino geometry offers a precious opportunity for the direct measurement of the magnetization currents that are masked by kinetic contributions to the Nernst current in the conventional geometry. The magnetization currents, also referred to as the edge currents, are independent on the conductivity of the sample which is why they can be conveniently described within the thermodynamic approach. They can be related to the Landau thermodynamic potential for an infinite system. We demonstrate that the observable manifestation of this, purely thermodynamic, Nernst effect consists in the strong oscillations of the magnetic field measured in the center of the disk as a function of the external field. The oscillations depend on the temperature difference at the edges of the disk. Dirac fermions and 2D electrons with a parabolic spectrum are characterized by oscillations of different phase and frequency. We predict qualitatively different power dependencies of the magnitude of the Nernst signal on the chemical potential for normal and Dirac carriers.

We show that the Migdal-Eliashberg theory loses validity at a finite value $\lambda_c$ of the electron-phonon coupling $\lambda$ regardless of the underlying model Hamiltonian. The value of $\lambda_c$ is approximately between 3.0 and 3.7. The new phase that emerges at $\lambda>\lambda_c$ breaks the lattice translational symmetry. Depending on the filling fraction and crystal symmetry, it is an insulator or a Fermi liquid. Its characteristic feature is a gap or a pronounced depression of the fermionic density of states near the Fermi level. We establish the breakdown from within the Migdal-Eliashberg theory by demonstrating that the normal state specific heat is negative for $\lambda\ge 3.7$ and the quasiparticle lifetime vanishes in the strong coupling limit. At fixed $\lambda>\lambda_c$, the transition to the new phase occurs at a critical temperature higher than the superconducting transition temperature. In addition, there is a first order phase transition between the new phase and the superconducting state as we vary $\lambda$ across $\lambda_c$ at fixed temperature. We put forward a new theory - lattice-fermionic theory of superfluidity - that bridges the gap between the Migdal-Eliashberg approach and the physics at stronger coupling. We study effects of disorder on eigenstates of 1D two-component fermions with infinitely strong Hubbard repulsion. We demonstrate that the spin-independent (potential) disorder reduces the problem to the one-particle Anderson localization taking place at arbitrarily weak disorder. In contrast, a random magnetic field can cause reentrant many-body localization-delocalization transitions. Surprisingly weak magnetic field destroys one-particle localization caused by not too strong potential disorder, whereas at much stronger fields the states are many-body localized. We present numerical support of these conclusions.

This paper studies a model with multifractal wave functions and fractal mini-bands which allows for analytical derivation of its phase diagram

Weakly nonintegrable many-body systems can restore ergodicity in distinctive ways depending on the range of the interaction network in action space. Action resonances seed chaotic dynamics into the networks. Long-range networks provide well connected resonances with ergodization controlled by the individual resonance chaos time scales. Short-range networks instead yield a dramatic slowing down of ergodization in action space, and lead to rare resonance diffusion. We use Josephson junction chains as a paradigmatic study case. We exploit finite time average distributions to characterize the thermalizing dynamics of actions. We identify an action resonance diffusion regime responsible for the slowing down. We extract the diffusion coefficient of that slow process and measure its dependence on the proximity to the integrable limit. Independent measures of correlation functions confirm our findings. The observed fragile diffusion is relying on weakly chaotic dynamics in spatially isolated action resonances. It can be suppressed, and ergodization delayed, by adding weak action noise, as a proof of concept.

Attempts to resolve the long-standing Fermion mass hierarchy problem in frames of the AdS/CFT correspondence demand the knowledge of bulk fermion masses. The approach of the “old” conformal bootstrap in the anti-de Sitter (AdS) context permitted calculating bulk masses of scalar fields, as it was shown in three previous papers B. L. Altshuler [arXiv:1810.01105; Int. J. Mod. Phys. 2050001 (2020)10.1142/S0217751X20500013; J. High Energy Phys. 01 (2020) 13710.1007/JHEP01(2020)137]. In the present paper, this approach is extended to physically more interesting spin-1/2 bulk fields. Calculation of spinor-scalar vertices is performed in physical AdS space, and unexpectedly simple expressions for spinor-scalar bubbles (two-point one-loop self-energy Witten diagrams) are obtained. The “double-trace from UV to IR flow” subtraction of UV divergences used earlier in calculations of the UV-finite bulk tadpoles is applied to bubbles. This permitted us to write down in the frame of the old conformal bootstrap approach the nontrivial spectral equations for the bulk fermion masses; the SU(N) Yukawa model of spinor fields interacting with conformal invariant scalar field in case of four boundary dimensions is considered as a specific example.

We consider a weakly interacting two-component Fermi gas of dipolar particles (magnetic atoms or polar molecules) in the two-dimensional geometry. The dipole-dipole interaction (together with the short-range interaction at Feshbach resonances) for dipoles perpendicular to the plane of translational motion may provide a superfluid transition. The dipole-dipole scattering amplitude is momentum dependent, which violates the Anderson theorem claiming the independence of the transition temperature on the presence of weak disorder. We have shown that the disorder can strongly increase the critical temperature (up to 10 nK at realistic densities). This opens wide possibilities for the studies of the superfluid regime in weakly interacting Fermi gases, which was not observed so far., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We predict synchronization of the chaotic dynamics of two atomic ensembles coupled to a heavily damped optical cavity mode. The atoms are dissipated collectively through this mode and pumped incoherently to achieve a macroscopic population of the cavity photons. Even though the dynamics of each ensemble are chaotic, their motions repeat one another. In our system, chaos first emerges via quasiperiodicity and then synchronizes. Bootstrap equations for conformal correlators that mimic the early theory of conformal bootstrap are written down in frames of the AdS/CFT approach. The simplified version of these equations, that may be justified if Schwinger-Keldysh formalism is used in AdS/CFT instead of conventional Feynman-Witten diagrams technique, permits to calculate values of conformal dimensions in the $O(N)$ symmetric model with conformal or composite Hubbard-Stratonovich field., 21 pages. We analyze the origin and properties of the chaotic dynamics of two atomic ensembles in a driven-dissipative experimental setup, where they are collectively damped by a bad cavity mode and incoherently pumped by a Raman laser. Starting from the mean-field equations, we explain the emergence of chaos by way of quasiperiodicity -- presence of two or more incommensurate frequencies. This is known as the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos. The equations of motion have a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry with respect to the interchange of the two ensembles. However, some of the attractors of these equations spontaneously break this symmetry. To understand the emergence and subsequent properties of various attractors, we concurrently study the mean-field trajectories, Poincar\'{e} sections, maximum and conditional Lyapunov exponents, and power spectra. Using Floquet analysis, we show that quasiperiodicity is born out of non $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetric oscillations via a supercritical Neimark-Sacker bifurcation. Changing the detuning between the level spacings in the two ensembles and the repump rate results in the synchronization of the two chaotic ensembles. In this regime, the chaotic intensity fluctuations of the light radiated by the two ensembles are identical. Identifying the synchronization manifold, we understand the origin of synchronized chaos as a tangent bifurcation intermittency of the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetric oscillations. At its birth, synchronized chaos is unstable. The interaction of this attractor with other attractors causes on-off intermittency until the synchronization manifold becomes sufficiently attractive. We analyze the role of coherent tunneling that gives rise to bands of delocalized quantum states providing a coherent pathway for population transfer (PT) between computational states with similar energies. Given an energy function ${\cal E}(z)$ of a binary optimization problem and a bit-string $z_i$ with atypically low energy, our goal is to find other bit-strings with energies within a narrow window around ${\cal E}(z_i)$. We study PT due to quantum evolution under a transverse field $B_\perp$ of an n-qubit system that encodes ${\cal E}(z)$. We focus on a simple yet nontrivial model: $M$ randomly chosen "marked" bit-strings ($2^n \gg M$) are assigned energies in the interval ${\cal E}(z)\in[-n -W/2, n + W/2]$ with $W << B_\perp$, while the rest of the states are assigned energy $0$. The PT starts at a marked state $z_i$ and ends up in a superposition of $\sim \Omega$ marked states inside the PT window. The scaling of a typical runtime for PT with $n$ and $\Omega$ is the same as in the multi-target Grover's algorithm, except for a factor that is equal to $\exp(n \,B_{\perp}^{-2}/2)$ for $n \gg B_{\perp}^{2} \gg 1$. Unlike the Hamiltonians used in analog quantum search algorithms, the model we consider is non-integrable, and the transverse field delocalizes the marked states. PT protocol is not sensitive to the value of B and may be initialized at a marked state. We develop microscopic theory of PT. Under certain conditions, the band of the system eigenstates splits into mini-bands of non-ergodic delocalized states, whose width obeys a heavy-tailed distribution directly related to that of PT runtimes. We find analytical form of this distribution by solving nonlinear cavity equations for the random matrix ensemble. We study the dynamics of two ensembles of atoms (or equivalently, atomic clocks) coupled to a bad cavity and pumped incoherently by a Raman laser. Our main result is the nonequilibrium phase diagram for this experimental setup in terms of two parameters - detuning between the clocks and the repump rate. There are three main phases - trivial steady state (Phase I), where all atoms are maximally pumped, nontrivial steady state corresponding to monochromatic superradiance (Phase II), and amplitude-modulated superradiance (Phase III). Phases I and II are fixed points of the mean-field dynamics, while in most of Phase III stable attractors are limit cycles. Equations of motion possess an axial symmetry and a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ symmetry with respect to the interchange of the two clocks. Either one or both of these symmetries are spontaneously broken in various phases. The trivial steady state loses stability via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation bringing about a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetric limit cycle. The nontrivial steady state goes through a subcritical Hopf bifurcation responsible for coexistence of monochromatic and amplitude-modulated superradiance. Using Floquet analysis, we show that the $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetric limit cycle eventually becomes unstable and gives rise to two $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-asymmetric limit cycles via a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation. Each of the above attractors has its own unique fingerprint in the power spectrum of the light radiated from the cavity. In particular, limit cycles in Phase III emit frequency combs - series of equidistant peaks, where the symmetry of the frequency comb reflects the symmetry of the underlying limit cycle. 10 pags., 9 figs., 1 tab., We report the results of the numerical study of the nondissipative quantum Josephson junction chain with the focus on the statistics of many-body wave functions and local energy spectra. The disorder in this chain is due to the random offset charges. This chain is one of the simplest physical systems to study many-body localization. We show that the system may exhibit three distinct regimes: insulating, characterized by the full localization of many-body wave functions, a fully delocalized (metallic) one characterized by the wave functions that take all the available phase volume, and the intermediate regime in which the volume taken by the wave function scales as a nontrivial power of the full Hilbert-space volume. In the intermediate nonergodic regime the Thouless conductance (generalized to the many-body problem) does not change as a function of the chain length indicating a failure of the conventional single-parameter scaling theory of localization transition. The local spectra in this regime display the fractal structure in the energy space which is related with the fractal structure of wave functions in the Hilbert space. We study phase transitions in a two dimensional weakly interacting Bose gas in a random potential at finite temperatures. We identify superfluid, normal fluid, and insulator phases and construct the phase diagram. At T=0 one has a tricritical point where the three phases coexist. The surprising simplicity of Barvinsky-Nesterov or equivalently Gelfand-Yaglom methods of calculation of quantum determinants permits to obtain compact expressions for UV-finite difference of one-loop quantum energies for two arbitrary values of parameter of the double-trace asymptotic boundary conditions. This result generalizes Gubser and Mitra calculation for particular case of difference of "regular" and "irregular" one-loop energies in one-brane RS-model. Approach developed in the paper also allows to get "in one line" the one-loop quantum energies in two-brane RS-model. The efficiency of the future devices for quantum information processing will be limited mostly by the finite decoherence rates of the individual qubits and quantum gates. Recently, substantial progress was achieved in enhancing the time within which a solid-state qubit demonstrates coherent dynamics. This progress is based mostly on a successful isolation of the qubits from external decoherence sources obtained by clever engineering. Under these conditions, the material-inherent sources of noise start to play a crucial role. In most cases, quantum devices are affected by noise decreasing with frequency, f, approximately as 1/f. According to the present point of view, such noise is due to material- and device-specific microscopic degrees of freedom interacting with quantum variables of the nanodevice. The simplest picture is that the environment that destroys the phase coherence of the device can be thought of as a system of two-state fluctuators, which experience random hops between their states. If the hopping times are distributed in a exponentially broad domain, the resulting fluctuations have a spectrum close to 1/f in a large frequency range. In this paper we review the current state of the theory of decoherence due to degrees of freedom producing 1/f noise. We discuss basic mechanisms of such noises in various nanodevices and then review several models describing the interaction of the noise sources with quantum devices. The main focus of the review is to analyze how the 1/f noise destroys their coherent operation. We start from individual qubits concentrating mostly on the devices based on superconductor circuits, and then discuss some special issues related to more complicated architectures. Finally, we consider several strategies for minimizing the noise-induced decoherence.

We predict spontaneous generation of superfluid polariton currents in planar microcavities with lateral periodic modulation of both potential and decay rate. A spontaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry of a polariton condensate emerges at a critical pumping, and the current direction is stochastically chosen. We analyse the stability of the current with respect to the fluctuations of the condensate. A peculiar spatial current domain structure emerges, where the current direction is switched at the domain walls, and the characteristic domain size and lifetime scale with the pumping power., 6+6 pages, 4+1 figures (with supplemental material)

We consider dipolar excitations propagating via dipole-induced exchange among immobile molecules randomly spaced in a lattice. The character of the propagation is determined by long-range hops (Levy flights). We analyze the eigen-energy spectra and the multifractal structure of the wavefunctions. In 1D and 2D all states are localized, although in 2D the localization length can be extremely large leading to an effective localization-delocalization crossover in realistic systems. In 3D all eigenstates are extended but not always ergodic, and we identify the energy intervals of ergodic and non-ergodic states. The reduction of the lattice filling induces an ergodic to non-ergodic transition, and the excitations are mostly non-ergodic at low filling., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures

Near a quantum-critical point in a metal strong fermion-fermion interaction mediated by a soft collective boson gives rise to incoherent, non-Fermi liquid behavior. It also often gives rise to superconductivity which masks the non-Fermi liquid behavior. We analyze the interplay between superconductivity and fermionic incoherence for a set of quantum-critical models with effective dynamical interaction between low-energy fermions. We argue that superconductivity always develops above a quantum-critical point, no matter how strong the fermionic self-energy is. We argue that superconductivity should not be viewed as a pairing of incoherent fermions, as previously thought. Rather, $T_c$ is non-zero due to the fact that the self-energy is suppressed at the two lowest fermionic Matsubara frequencies $\omega_m = \pm \pi T$. We combine numerical diagonalization with a semi-analytical calculations to prove the existence of the intermediate non-ergodic but delocalized phase in the Anderson model on disordered hierarchical lattices. We suggest a new generalized population dynamics that is able to detect the violation of ergodicity of the delocalized states within the Abou-Chakra, Anderson and Thouless recursive scheme. This result is supplemented by statistics of random wave functions extracted from exact diagonalization of the Anderson model on ensemble of disordered Random Regular Graphs (RRG) of N sites with the connectivity K=2. By extrapolation of the results of both approaches to N->infinity we obtain the fractal dimensions D_{1}(W) and D_{2}(W) as well as the population dynamic exponent D(W) with the accuracy sufficient to claim that they are non-trivial in the broad interval of disorder strength W_{E}10^{5} reveals a singularity in D_{1,2}(W)-dependencies which provides a clear evidence for the first order transition between the two delocalized phases on RRG at W_{E}\approx 10.0. It is commonly accepted that there are no phase transitions in one-dimensional (1D) systems at a finite temperature, because long-range correlations are destroyed by thermal fluctuations. Here we demonstrate that the 1D gas of short-range interacting bosons in the presence of disorder can undergo a finite temperature phase transition between two distinct states: fluid and insulator. None of these states has long-range spatial correlations, but this is a true albeit non-conventional phase transition because transport properties are singular at the transition point. In the fluid phase the mass transport is possible, whereas in the insulator phase it is completely blocked even at finite temperatures. We thus reveal how the interaction between disordered bosons influences their Anderson localization. This key question, first raised for electrons in solids, is now crucial for the studies of atomic bosons where recent experiments have demonstrated Anderson localization in expanding very dilute quasi-1D clouds., 8 pages, 5 figures

We describe the weak localization correction to conductivity in ultra-thin graphene films, taking into account disorder scattering and the influence of trigonal warping of the Fermi surface. A possible manifestation of the chiral nature of electrons in the localization properties is hampered by trigonal warping, resulting in a suppression of the weak anti-localization effect in monolayer graphene and of weak localization in bilayer graphene. Intervalley scattering due to atomically sharp scatterers in a realistic graphene sheet or by edges in a narrow wire tends to restore weak localization resulting in negative magnetoresistance in both materials., Comment: corrected misprints present in the published version

We review the recently-developed theory of weak localization in monolayer and bilayer graphene. For high-density monolayer graphene and for any-density bilayers, the dominant factor affecting weak localization properties is trigonal warping of graphene bands, which reflects asymmetry of the carrier dispersion with respect to the center of the corresponding valley. The suppression of weak localization by trigonal warping is accompanied by a similar effect caused by random-bond disorder (due to bending of a graphene sheet) and by dislocation/antidislocation pairs. As a result, weak localization in graphene can be observed only in samples with sufficiently strong intervalley scattering, which is reflected by a characteristic form of negative magnetoresistance in graphene-based structures.

The focusing of electric current by a single p-n junction in graphene is theoretically predicted. Precise focusing may be achieved by fine-tuning the densities of carriers on the n - and p -sides of the junction to equal values. This finding may be useful for the engineering of electronic lenses and focused beam splitters using gate-controlled n-p-n junctions in graphene-based transistors.

Bosons with finite lifetime exhibit condensation and lasing when their influx exceeds the lasing threshold determined by the dissipative losses. In general, different one-particle states decay differently, and the bosons are usually assumed to condense in the state with the longest lifetime. Interaction between the bosons partially neglected by such an assumption can smear the lasing threshold into a threshold domain--a stable lasing many-body state exists within certain intervals of the bosonic influxes. This recently described weak lasing regime is formed by the spontaneously symmetry breaking and phase-locking self-organization of bosonic modes, which results in an essentially many-body state with a stable balance between gains and losses. Here we report, to our knowledge, the first observation of the weak lasing phase in a one-dimensional condensate of exciton-polaritons subject to a periodic potential. Real and reciprocal space photoluminescence images demonstrate that the spatial period of the condensate is twice as large as the period of the underlying periodic potential. These experiments are realized at room temperature in a ZnO microwire deposited on a silicon grating. The period doubling takes place at a critical pumping power, whereas at a lower power polariton emission images have the same periodicity as the grating.

Significance One-dimensional bosons in disorder provide a perfect system for studying a generic phenomenon of many-body localization–delocalization transition. After the observation of single-particle Anderson localization in dilute clouds of bosonic atoms, the obvious direction of research is to describe the effects of repulsion between the bosons. Theoretical studies of 1D interacting bosons have a long history. In the case of strong enough repulsion and zero temperature, the problem was solved by Giamarchi and Schulz in 1988, and, more recently, the limit of weak repulsion was analyzed. However, the full picture of finite temperature and arbitrary interaction strength has remained an open problem. In this paper, we develop such a theory and establish predictions that can be confronted to experiment.

We study collective dynamics of interacting centers of exciton-polariton condensation in presence of spatial inhomogeneity, as modeled by diatomic active oscillator lattices. The mode formalism is developed and employed to derive existence and stability criteria of plane wave solutions. It is demonstrated that $k_0=0$ wave number mode with the binary elementary cell on a diatomic lattice possesses superior existence and stability properties. Decreasing net on-site losses (balance of dissipation and pumping) or conservative nonlinearity favors multistability of modes, while increasing frequency mismatch between adjacent oscillators detriments it. On the other hand, spatial inhomogeneity may recover stability of modes at high nonlinearities. Entering the region where all single-mode solutions are unstable we discover subsequent transitions between localized quasiperiodic, chaotic and global chaotic dynamics in the mode space, as nonlinearity increases. Importantly, the last transition evokes the loss of synchronization. These effects may determine lasing dynamics of interacting exciton-polariton condensation centers., 9 pages, 3 figures

Strictly speaking, the laws of the conventional statistical physics, based on the equipartition postulate [Gibbs J W (1902) Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics, developed with especial reference to the rational foundation of thermodynamics] and ergodicity hypothesis [Boltzmann L (1964) Lectures on Gas Theory], apply only in the presence of a heat bath. Until recently this restriction was believed to be not important for real physical systems because a weak coupling to the bath was assumed to be sufficient. However, this belief was not examined seriously until recently when the progress in both quantum gases and solid-state coherent quantum devices allowed one to study the systems with dramatically reduced coupling to the bath. To describe such systems properly one should revisit the very foundations of statistical mechanics. We examine this general problem for the case of the Josephson junction chain that can be implemented in the laboratory and show that it displays a novel high-temperature nonergodic phase with finite resistance. With further increase of the temperature the system undergoes a transition to the fully localized state characterized by infinite resistance and exponentially long relaxation.

We predict the spontaneous modulated emission from a pair of exciton-polariton condensates due to coherent (Josephson) and dissipative coupling. We show that strong polariton-polariton inter- action generates complex dynamics in the weak-lasing domain way beyond Hopf bifurcations. As a result, the exciton-polariton condensates exhibit self-induced oscillations and emit an equidistant frequency comb light spectrum. A plethora of possible emission spectra with asymmetric peak dis- tributions appears due to spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry. The lasing dynamics is affected by the shot noise arising from the influx of polaritons. That results in a complex inhomo- geneous line broadening., Comment: 6 pages

Ballistic transport of helical edge modes in two-dimensional topological insulators is protected by time-reversal symmetry. Recently it was pointed out [1] that coupling of non-interacting helical electrons to an array of randomly anisotropic Kondo impurities can lead to a spontaneous breaking of the symmetry and, thus, can remove this protection. We have analyzed effects of the interaction between the electrons using a combination of the functional and the Abelian bosonization approaches. The suppression of the ballistic transport turns out to be robust in a broad range of the interaction strength. We have evaluated the renormalization of the localization length and have found that, for strong interaction, it is substantial. We have identified various regimes of the dc transport and discussed its temperature and sample size dependencies in each of the regimes., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

One loop quantum effective action W of scalar field 'living' on the AdS background of the Randall-Sundrum model is defined here by now popular way which excludes bulk UV divergencies; thus induced Planck mass is given not by the UV regularization parameter, like in Sakharov's pioneer work, but by the location of the UV-cut of AdS space. Resummation of Schwinger-DeWitt expansion of the action W is performed by the novel 'auxiliary mass' method. The inverse mass squared parameter of this expansion is determined by the location of the 'visible' IR-brane of the RS-model. Obtained expression for induced vacuum energy density coincides with the independently calculated VEV of the stress-energy tensor. Corresponding potential in 4 dimensions possesses a non-trivial extremum which hopefully will permit us to stabilize IR brane and hence to fix the observed small value of mass hierarchy in analogy with the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. It is demonstrated that naive equating of values of the induced Planck mass and vacuum energy density to those of the RS-model determines otherwise arbitrary constants of the model. We develop an explicit description of a time-dependent response of fermionic condensates to perturbations. The dynamics of Cooper pairs at times shorter than the energy relaxation time can be described by the BCS model. We obtain a general explicit solution for the dynamics of the BCS model. We also solve a closely related dynamical problem - the central spin model, which describes a localized spin coupled to a "spin bath". Here, we focus on presenting the solution and describing its general properties, but also mention some applications, e.g. to nonstationary pairing in cold Fermi gases and to the issue of electron spin decoherence in quantum dots. A typical dynamics of the BCS and central spin models is quasi-periodic with a large number of frequencies and stable under small perturbations. We show that for certain special initial conditions the number of frequencies decreases and the solution simplifies. The problem of Rabi oscillations in a qubit coupled to a fluctuator and in contact with a heath bath is considered. A scheme is developed for taking into account both phase and energy relaxation in a phenomenological way, while taking full account of the quantum dynamics of the four-level system subject to a driving AC field. Significant suppression of the Rabi oscillations is found when the qubit and fluctuator are close to resonance. The effect of the fluctuator state on the read-out signal is discussed. This effect is shown to modify the observed signal significantly. This may be relevant to recent experiments by Simmonds et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 077003 (2004)]., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We develop an analytical approach to analyze the effect of dephasing of one-particle states on the magnetoconductance of closed quantum dots. This approach allows us to extract dephasing rates from experimental measurements of the magnetoconductance. The dephasing rates calculated depend on the mean level spacing and are much longer than in open quantum dots. The limited experimental data available are consistent with the theoretical prediction of diverging dephasing times in finite closed systems at sufficiently low temperatures. We also consider fluctuations of the single-electron spectrum, and observe a significant effect on the conductance distribution and magnetoconductance of closed quantum dots at experimentally relevant temperatures.

We study the mechanism of nuclear spin relaxation in quantum dots due to the electron exchange with 2D gas. We show that the nuclear spin relaxation rate T1−1 is dramatically affected by the Coulomb blockade (CB) and can be controlled by gate voltage. In the case of strong spin–orbit (SO) coupling the relaxation rate is maximal in the CB valleys whereas for the weak SO coupling the maximum of 1/T1 is near the CB peaks. The physical mechanism of nuclear spin relaxation rate at strong SO coupling is identified as Debye–Mandelstam–Leontovich–Pollak–Geballe relaxational mechanism.

Statistical analysis of the eigenfunctions of the Anderson tight-binding model with on-site disorder on regular random graphs strongly suggests that the extended states are multifractal at any finite disorder. The spectrum of fractal dimensions $f(\alpha)$ defined in Eq.(3), remains positive for $\alpha$ noticeably far from 1 even when the disorder is several times weaker than the one which leads to the Anderson localization, i.e. the ergodicity can be reached only in the absence of disorder. In bulk materials superconductivity is remarkably robust with respect to non-magnetic disorder. In the two-dimensional limit however, the quantum condensate suffers from the effects produced by disorder and electron correlations which both tend to destroy superconductivity . The recent discovery of superconductivity in single atomic layers of Pb, the striped incommensurate (SIC) and $\sqrt{7}\times\sqrt{3}$ Pb/Si(111), opened an unique opportunity to probe the influence of well-identified structural disorder on two-dimensional superconductivity at the atomic and mesoscopic scale. In these two ultimate condensates we reveal how the superconducting spectra loose their conventional character, by mapping the local tunneling density of states. We report variations of the spectral properties even at scales significantly shorter than the coherence length. Furthermore, fine structural differences between the two monolayers, such as their atomic density, lead to very different superconducting behaviour. The denser SIC remains globally robust to disorder, as are thicker Pb films, whereas in the slighly more diluted $\sqrt{7}\times\sqrt{3}$ system superconductivity is strongly fragilized. A consequence of this weakness is revealed at monoatomic steps of $\sqrt{7}\times\sqrt{3}$, which disrupt superconductivity at the atomic scale. This effect witnesses that each individual step edge is a Josephson barrier. At a mesoscopic scale the weakly linked superconducting atomic terraces of $\sqrt{7}\times\sqrt{3}$ form a native network of Josephson junctions. We anticipate the Pb/Si(111) system to offer the unique opportunity to tune the superconducting coupling between adjacent terraces, paving a new way of designing atomic scale quantum devices compatible with silicon technology., submitted to Nature Physics

International audience; We consider weakly interacting bosons in a 1D quasiperiodic potential (Aubry-Azbel-Harper model) in the regime where all single-particle states are localized. We show that the interparticle interaction may lead to the many-body delocalization and we obtain the finite-temperature phase diagram. Counterintuitively, in a wide range of parameters the delocalization requires stronger cou- pling as the temperature increases. This means that the system of bosons can undergo a transition from a fluid to insulator (glass) state under heating.

The goal of this paper is to highlight several issues which are most crucial for the understanding of the ``metal-insulator transition'' in two dimensions. We discuss some common problems in interpreting experimental results on high mobility Si MOSFETs. We analyze concepts and methods used to determine the critical density of electrons at the metal-insulator transition. In particular, we discuss the origin of the temperature dependence of the resistivity and reasons for this dependence to flatten out at some electron density in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition. This flattening has recently been proposed to indicate a true quantum phase transition. We suggest an alternative interpretation of this result and demonstrate the consistency of our proposition with the experimental data. One of the main questions, which arise in connection with the transition, is whether or not the metallic state is qualitatively distinct from a conventional disordered Fermi liquid. We analyze the arguments in favor of both affirmative and negative answers to this question and conclude that the experimental results accumulated up-to-date do not provide convincing evidence for the new state of matter characterized by a metallic-like residual conductivity. This paper is devoted to the magnetic properties of isolated mesoscopic grains. We demonstrate that under very general conditions the electron-electron interactions in such grains can be taken into account by a simple interaction Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian involves only three coupling constants, which correspond to charging, exchange interaction, and superconducting correlations. The most important condition for such a description is that Thouless conductance of each grain is large. Under this condition sample-to-sample fluctuations of the coupling constants can be neglected. However, the thermodynamic properties can still remain sample specific due to the one-electron part of the Hamiltonian. If the grain is made from a material that is close to the threshold of ferromagnetic instability, the mesoscopic fluctuations of the magnetization are especially strong. Moreover, the situation becomes multistable: free energy of each grain as a function of the magnetization is characterized by a large number of local minima. We analyze the statistics of these minima and show that it possesses simple scaling properties. Numerical simulations confirm this scaling.

We consider the adiabatic charge transport through zero-dimensional mesoscopic sample (quantum dot) caused by two periodically changing external perturbations. Both the magnitude and the sign of the transmitted charge are extremely sensitive to the configuration of the dot and to the magnetic field. We find the correlation function characterizing the random value of this pumped charge for arbitrary strength of the perturbation. In contrast to previous theoretical and experimental claims, the charge is found not to have any symmetry with respect to the inversion of magnetic field. At strong pumping perturbation, the variance of the charge $$ is found to be proportional to the length of the contour in parametric space., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures included

A generalization of the single-parameter scaling theory of localization is proposed for the case when the random potential depends on temperature. The scaling equation describing the behavior of the resistance is derived. It is shown that the competition between the metallic-like temperature dependence of the Drude resistivity and localization leads to a maximum (minimum) at higher (lower) temperatures. An illustration of a metal–insulator transition in the model of charged traps whose concentration depends on temperature is presented.

Electronic and transport properties of Graphene, a one-atom thick crystalline material, are sensitive to the presence of atoms adsorbed on its surface. An ensemble of randomly positioned adatoms, each serving as a scattering center, leads to the Boltzmann-Drude diffusion of charge determining the resistivity of the material. An important question, however, is whether the distribution of adatoms is always genuinely random. In this Communication we demonstrate that dilute adatoms on graphene may have a tendency towards a spatially correlated state with a hidden Kekule mosaic order. This effect emerges from the interaction between the adatoms mediated by the Friedel oscillations of the electron density in graphene. The onset of the ordered state, as the system is cooled below the critical temperature, is accompanied by the opening of a gap in the electronic spectrum of the material, dramatically changing its transport properties. It is shown that recent experiments indicating a metal-insulator transition in 2D electron systems can be interpreted in terms of a simple model, in which the resistivity is controlled by scattering at charged hole traps located in the oxide layer. The gate voltage changes the number of charged traps which results in a sharp change in the resistivity. The observed exponential temperature dependence of the resistivity in the metallic phase of the transition follows from the temperature dependence of the trap occupation number. The model naturally describes the experimentally observed scaling properties of the transition and effects of magnetic and electric fields.

This paper is devoted to the statistics of the quantum eigenfunctions in an ensemble of finite disordered systems (metallic grains). We focus on moments of inverse participation ratio. In the universal random matrix limit that corresponds to the infinite conductance of the grains, these moments are self-averaging quantities. At large but finite conductance the moments do fluctuate due to the long range correlations in the eigenfunctions. We evaluate the distributions of fluctuations at given conductance and geometry of the grains and express them through the spectrum of the diffusion operator in the grain., Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, no figure

We obtained the analog of the Luttinger relation for a commensurate spin-density-wave state.
