Accurate estimation of landslide depth is essential for practical hazard assessment and risk mitigation. This work addresses the problem of determining landslide depth from satellite-derived elevation data. Using the principle of mass conservation, this problem can be formulated as a linear inverse problem. To solve the inverse problem, we present a regularization approach that computes approximate solutions and regularization parameters using the Balancing Principle. Synthetic data were carefully designed and generated to evaluate the method under controlled conditions, allowing for precise validation of its performance. Through comprehensive testing with this synthetic dataset, we demonstrate the method's robustness across varying noise levels. When applied to real-world data from the Fels landslide in Alaska, the proposed method proved its practical value in reconstructing landslide thickness patterns. The 2014 San Leo landslide is a very peculiar landslide, being controlled by a large number of factors that interacted with each other; each one was in turn critical in driving, promoting, or allowing the slope failure. In the ten years after the landslide event, numerous studies were presented in the form of national and international journal articles, conference proceedings, as well as unpublished technical reports. These projects allowed different aspects and mechanisms to be investigated, progressively enhancing our understanding of the landslide. In this paper, we summarize, review, and discuss the various numerical modelling analyses that have been conducted, in order to outline the foundations on which future investigations may be designed. Considering the in depth understanding that has been gained on the geological, lithological, environmental, and engineering aspects of this site, we suggest that the San Leo plateau may be an ideal engineering geological field laboratory useful in investigating the evolution and instability phenomena that affect sites with similar characteristics within the Marecchia Valley region and beyond. The main objective of this work is to deduce the geologic setting of the San Leo cliff from the natural sections exposed in its own rock walls. The line-drawings of the rock walls, coupled with a detailed geologic map and framed in a tectonostratigraphic scheme, allow us to reconstruct a 3D geological model of the San Leo cliff. The interpretation of the collected data also allows us to establish the relationships between lithostratigraphy, tectonics and geomorphology that control the evolution of this spectacular and delicate landscape emergency of Val Marecchia. The 2014 landslide (BORGATTI et alii, 2015) has been only the latest event in the evolution of the San Leo cliff, where fractures and faults of Late Pliocene to Present age have predisposed rock masses to fall, so that the current slope morphology is the result of a very long series of rockfalls (BENEDETTI et alii, 2011). Landslides pose a severe geohazard in many countries. The availability of inventories depicting the spatial and temporal distribution of landslides is crucial for assessing landslide susceptibility and risk in territorial planning or investigating landscape evolution. In the case of the Italian territory, several landslide hazard and risk maps were produced ranging from regional to national scale. This was made possible leveraging public domain data of the Italian Landslide Inventory (IFFI project; Trigila et alii, 2010), or other geodatabases spanning from local to regional scale. However, the practical utility of this inventory is often limited in many applications due to its spatial inhomogeneity or the use of different mapping methods and classification criteria. Despite the impressive advancements in techniques for assessing natural hazard susceptibility at a national scale over the past years, including statistical models, AI based models (i.e. Neural Networks) and others, the results are still limited by the quality of the data used. Specifically, the effectiveness of these models is closely tied to the quality of the landslide inventory utilized. Currently, recent regional landslide inventories could potentially enhance precision and accuracy compared to the national dataset, primarily owing to their finer resolution compared to the IFFI dataset. In this work, we present a new approach to assess landslide susceptibility at local scale, relying on regional landslide inventories. Using a data-driven technique, we propose to train a single model on a landslide inventory consisting of a composition of regional inventories selected to be representative of the national scenario. The weighted model is now capable of predicting landslide susceptibility in any study area across Italy. The entire analysis has been done using the SRT tool for Google Earth Engine and the SZ-plugin for QGIS. All the data used and processed are freely available and downloadable. The proposed approach has been tested in the framework of the PNRR RETURN project. The evaluation was conducted in two specific areas: the first one encompasses a section of the railway connecting Napoli to Bari (southern Italy), while the second focuses on areas impacted by the Marche region 2022 landslide event (central Italy). Landslides are among the most common type of hazard that affect mountainous regions. While the impact of the single landslide is often localized and limited to the influence area, in some cases, the occurrence of major events can result in significant and long-lasting social, economic, and environmental impacts that extend beyond the area directly affected by the event. These major landslides involve the sudden detachment of large volumes of rock mass and cause significant disturbance of in-situ stress field due to slope debuttressing and reduction in lateral support, which often result in conditions of limit equilibrium affecting the remaining part of the slope. Effects of such limit equilibrium conditions can range from a long term, gradual morphological evolution of the slope due to progressive detachment of material, to the development of multistage landslides, involving the failure of volumes of rock mass similar in magnitude and impacts to the original event. In this work, we investigate the post-failure morphological evolution of the daylighting rupture surface and deposit of one of the most important historical landslides, the 1963 Vajont Slide. A preliminary investigation of a pair of airborne laser scanner (ALS) datasets, collected in 2017 and 2023, is undertaken to assess and compute the change in elevation across selected areas within the rupture surface. Based on a three-dimensional change detection analysis, the observed volumetric changes of selected, inferred rockfall events are estimated. Terrestrial and airborne photographs are also used to identify the unstable volumes that have progressively detached, as well as the damage features that outlined these unstable blocks. Finally, we discuss the long-term evolution of the slope with focus on progressive damage accumulation and its spatial relationship with inherited, tectonic structures. Ultimately, this contribution is intended to highlight the important role of post-slope failure damage accumulation on the long-term stability of rock slopes, emphasizing the critical role that post-failure monitoring and analysis can play in outlining the residual landslide hazard and, in some instances, the potential development of multi-stage landslides. The spread of invasive alien plant species (IAPs) poses a serious threat to the biodiversity and effectiveness of rivers and drainage canals. Nevertheless, the reasons for the implications of increasing presence of IAPs on the stability and effectiveness of flood defences are still unclear. To point out the current knowledge on the topic, a systematic review was performed focusing on three of the key riparian IAPs: Amorpha fruticosa, Arundo donax and Reynoutria japonica. We searched for articles in the Scopus database, focused on the links between the three target species and hydrology and geomorphological processes. Only 7 papers were found containing what we were looking for. All the three target species are true «engineer plants», significantly regulating the edaphic and functional peculiarities of colonised environments, which correspond in the present case to river embankments. A. fruticosa slows down the water flow speed, increasing the flood risk; the extremely superficial A. donax root systems weaken bank stability, whereas R. japonica promotes soil erosion due to its peculiar roots' morphology and extremely rapid biological cycles. This work shows that, despite clear evidence of the significant negative impacts mediated by the three IAPs of concern, the available levels of knowledge are wholly insufficient. In order to develop effective management strategies for riparian contexts globally, further investigations are needed urgently. Future research should focus on the structural/functional impacts of IAPs in riparian environments, not forgetting the additional effects of global changes and human impact on rivers and their functions. This work presents the case study of the San Lorenzo road tunnel, a linear infrastructure located in Friuli Venezia Giulia, northern Italy, affected by the so-called Passo della Morte landslide. This slope instability phenomenon has caused several problems since the beginning of the tunnel construction works, like water seepage and concrete lining detachments, increasing the safety risk for road users. Due to these circumstances, numerous studies have been conducted and a monitoring system has been developed since 2014 to control the ongoing situation of the most damaged portions of the road tunnel. Building on the monitoring data, studies and knowledge accumulated over the years, this paper describes the work done to trace back the sum of landslide-induced stresses directly responsible for the current damages on the tunnel. The first steps taken in this direction have included an adequate representation of the crack pattern on the tunnel vault. This has been used both as an initial goal and as a means of validation in the development of a finite element model. The stability of large rock slopes is controlled by geological, structural, geomorphic, and environmental factors, which define the location, size, and failure mechanism of landslides. However, the stability of a slope can change with time, as a result of the formation and accumulation of slope damage, which weakens the rock mass forming the slope or the rupture surface of the incipient landslide. In this paper, we review three landslide sites, analysing the characteristics of the slope damage, and highlighting its effects on the kinematics of the slope and the evolution of the landslide. We note that, despite the importance of slope damage in controlling the timing and evolution of a slope failure, no frameworks or guidelines currently exist for performing a consistent and systematic analysis. We also emphasize that interdisciplinary approaches should be developed to assist in the quantification and characterization of rock slope damage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
