BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether patients age 65 years and over with a recent stroke or TIA benefit from statin treatment to a similar degree as younger patients. METHODS: The 4,731 patient cohort in the SPARCL study was divided into an elderly group (65 and over) and a younger group. The primary endpoint (fatal or nonfatal stroke) and secondary endpoints were analyzed, with calculation of the hazard ratio (HR) and p values from a Cox regression model. RESULTS: There were 2,249 patients in the elderly group and 2,482 in the younger group. The baseline LDL (133 mg/dL) and total cholesterol were comparable in the two groups. The elderly and younger groups had a 61.4 mg/dL and 58.7 mg/dL decrease in mean LDL during the trial. The primary endpoint was reduced by 26% in younger patients (HR 0.74, 0.57-0.96, p = 0.02) and by 10% in elderly subjects (HR 0.90, 0.73-1.11, p = 0.33). A test of heterogeneity for a treatment-age interaction was not significant (p = 0.52). The risk of stroke or TIA (HR 0.79, p = 0.01), major coronary events (HR 0.68, p = 0.035), any coronary heart disease event (HR 0.61, p = 0.0006), and revascularization procedures (HR 0.55, p = 0.0005) was reduced in the elderly group. CONCLUSIONS: There was no heterogeneity in the stroke reduction seen with atorvastatin in the elderly and younger groups. Cardiac events and revascularization procedures were also lower in both the elderly and younger subgroups treated with atorvastatin. These results support the use of atorvastatin in elderly patients with recent stroke or TIA.

The kinetics of the disproportionation reaction, in which the Nd2Fe14B phase forms Fe, Nd-hydride, and Fe2B under hydrogen, have been investigated by thermopiezic analysis. These studies have shown that the disproportionation temperature is dependent upon grain size, and is considerably lower for Nd-Fe-B alloys with submicron grain sizes, when compared with the cast material. Thus, melt-spun material disproportionates at a temperature about 300 degrees C below that of cast alloy (at a heating rate of 1 degree C/min). In addition, the amount of Nd2Fe14B phase in the alloy, can be related to the temperature range over which the reaction occurs and to the amount of Fe and Fe2B that forms as a result of the disproportionation reaction. The latter can be monitored by measuring the magnetization of the disproportionated material.

- Abstract

- Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In SPARCL, treatment with atorvastatin 80 mg daily reduced stroke risk in patients with recent stroke or TIA and no known coronary heart disease by 16% versus placebo over 4.9 years of follow-up. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine whether men and women similarly benefited from randomization to statin treatment. METHODS: The effect of sex on treatment-related reductions in stroke and other cardiovascular outcomes were analyzed with Cox regression modeling testing for sex by treatment interactions. RESULTS: Women (n=1908) constituted 40% of the SPARCL study population. At baseline, men (n=2823) were younger (62.0+/-0.21 versus 63.9+/-0.27 years), had lower systolic BPs (138.1+/-0.35 versus 139.5+/-0.47 mm Hg), higher diastolic BPs (82.2+/-0.20 versus 81.0+/-0.25 mm Hg), more frequently had a history of smoking (73% versus 38%), and had lower total cholesterol (207.0+/-0.54 versus 218.9+/-0.67 mg/dL) and LDL-C levels (132+/-0.45 versus 134+/-0.57 mg/dL) than women. Use of antithrombotics and antihypertensives were similar. After prespecified adjustment for region, entry event, time since event, and age, there were no sex by treatment interactions for the combined risk of nonfatal and fatal stroke (treatment Hazard Ratio, HR=0.84, 95% CI 0.68, 1.02 in men versus HR=0.84, 95% CI 0.63, 1.11 in women; treatment x sex interaction P=0.99), major cardiac events (HR=0.61, 95% CI 0.42, 0.87 in men versus HR=0.76, 95% CI 0.48, 1.21 in women; P=0.45), major cardiovascular events (HR=0.78, 95% CI 0.65, 0.93 in men versus HR=0.84, 95% CI 0.65, 1.07 in women; P=0.63), revascularization procedures (HR=0.50, 95% CI 0.37, 0.67 in men versus HR=0.76, 95% CI 0.46, 1.24 in women; P=0.17), or any CHD event (HR=0.54, 95% CI 0.41, 0.72 in men versus 0.67 95% CI 0.46, 0.98 in women; P=0.40). CONCLUSIONS: Stroke and other cardiovascular events are similarly reduced with atorvastatin 80 mg/d in men and women with recent stroke or TIA.

A new type of HDDR (Hydrogenation, Disproportionation, Desorption, Recombination) processing route, in which alloys are heated up under a low pressure of H2 for the disproportionation stage, was found to be an effective way of obtaining high remanence Nd-Fe-B ternary powders, with no large decrease in coercivity (which was the problem with the previous HDDR processing route, in which the alloys were heated under vacuum). The alloys with 0.5% Ga addition exhibited high coercivities of 1.0 MA[m.sup.-1] with no degradation in remanence ([B.sub.r] = 1.4 T). Index Terms--Nd-Fe-B, HDDR, anisotropic powder, high coercivity

The electromagnetic wave absorption properties of Ba M-type (Ba[Fe.sub.12-x]([Ti.sub.0.5][Mn.sub.0.5)x][O.sub.19]) ferrite - epoxy resin composites were investigated. After measuring the complex permittivities of the samples, the regions of complex permeabilities in which the reflection loss (R.L.) becomes less than -20 dB (-20 dB Regions), were calculated. Altering the conditions such as sintering temperature, particle size and the ratio of ferrite powder in the composite samples, resulted in frequency dependencies of permeabilities that agree well with the calculated -20 dB regions, and which lead to an expansion in bandwidth (frequency range ([Delta]f) of R.L. [is less than] -20 dB). The Ba[Fe.sub.9]([Ti.sub.0.5][Mn.sub.0.5)3][O.sub.19] ferrite-resin composite, which was produced by sintering at 1573K for 20 h, crushing into powder (150-300 [micro]m) and mixing with epoxy resin at a ratio of 70 mass %, exhibited a wide bandwidth ([Delta]f=7.2 GHz) from 13.75 GHz to 20.95 GHz. [Delta]f values of 1.4-5.4 GHz in the frequency range 6.35-15.65 GHz, were obtained by changing the composition of the Ba[Fe.sub.12-x]([Ti.sub.0.5][Mn.sub.0.5)x][O.sub.19]/ epoxy resin composite from x=3.5 to 4.5. Index Terms--composite, electromagnetic absorber, impedance matching, M-type ferrite.

Background and Purpose— In SPARCL, treatment with atorvastatin 80 mg daily reduced stroke risk in patients with recent stroke or TIA and no known coronary heart disease by 16% versus placebo over 4.9 years of follow-up. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine whether men and women similarly benefited from randomization to statin treatment. Methods— The effect of sex on treatment-related reductions in stroke and other cardiovascular outcomes were analyzed with Cox regression modeling testing for sex by treatment interactions. Results— Women (n=1908) constituted 40% of the SPARCL study population. At baseline, men (n=2823) were younger (62.0±0.21versus 63.9±0.27 years), had lower systolic BPs (138.1±0.35 versus 139.5±0.47 mm Hg), higher diastolic BPs (82.2±0.20 versus 81.0±0.25 mm Hg), more frequently had a history of smoking (73% versus 38%), and had lower total cholesterol (207.0±0.54 versus 218.9±0.67 mg/dL) and LDL-C levels (132±0.45 versus 134±0.57 mg/dL) than women. Use of antithrombotics and antihypertensives were similar. After prespecified adjustment for region, entry event, time since event, and age, there were no sex by treatment interactions for the combined risk of nonfatal and fatal stroke (treatment Hazard Ratio, HR=0.84, 95% CI 0.68, 1.02 in men versus HR=0.84, 95% CI 0.63, 1.11 in women; treatment×sex interaction P =0.99), major cardiac events (HR=0.61, 95% CI 0.42, 0.87 in men versus HR=0.76, 95% CI 0.48, 1.21 in women; P =0.45), major cardiovascular events (HR=0.78, 95% CI 0.65, 0.93 in men versus HR=0.84, 95% CI 0.65, 1.07 in women; P =0.63), revascularization procedures (HR=0.50, 95% CI 0.37, 0.67 in men versus HR=0.76, 95% CI 0.46, 1.24 in women; P =0.17), or any CHD event (HR=0.54, 95% CI 0.41, 0.72 in men versus 0.67 95% CI 0.46, 0.98 in women; P =0.40). Conclusion— Stroke and other cardiovascular events are similarly reduced with atorvastatin 80 mg/d in men and women with recent stroke or TIA.

- Abstract
The crystal structure of LiZn2(BH4)5 is studied in detail using a combination of powder neutron diffraction (PND), Raman spectroscopy, and 11B MAS NMR spectroscopy on LiZn2(BH4)5 and LiZn2(11BD4)5. The aim is to obtain detailed structural knowledge of the first interpenetrated framework hydride compound, LiZn2(BD4)5 which consists of doubly interpenetrated 3D frameworks built from dinuclear complex ions [Zn2(BD4)5]− and lithium ions. The positions of the deuterium atoms are determined using Rietveld refinement of the PND data and the orientation of one of the four independent BD4− groups is revised. The current data reveal that the structure of [Zn2(BD4)5]− is more regular than previously reported, as are also the coordinations around the Zn and Li atoms. Both Zn and Li atoms are found to coordinate to the BD4− units via the tetrahedral edges. Some distortion of the angles within the BD4 units is observed, relative to the expected angles of 109.4 for the ideal tetrahedral coordination. Raman spectroscopy confirms bending and stretching modes from the expected terminal and bridging bidentate BH4ˉ and BD4ˉ units. The 11B MAS NMR spectrum of the satellite transitions resolves two distinct manifolds of spinning sidebands, which allows estimation of the 11B quadrupole coupling parameters and isotropic chemical shifts for the four distinct 11B sites of [Zn2(BD4)5]−. These parameters agree favorably well with the isotropic triple-quantum shifts, observed in an 11B MQMAS NMR experiment. The present results may aid in the development and understanding of new borohydride materials for applications as fast ion conductors or as materials for hydrogen storage.

- Abstract
KZn(BH4)Cl2, synthesized for the first time, contains a heteroleptic complex anion [Zn(BH4)Cl2]-, extending the structural diversity of metal borohydrides. In-situ synchrotron powder diffraction, NMR and Raman spectroscopy were used to characterize KZn(BH4)Cl2 and to evaluate the mechanism, for its thermal decomposition. The title compound decomposes at a significantly lower temperature than KBH4 and may be used for inspiration for the design of novel hydrogen storage materials. Combining different ligands in modified metal borohydrides is proposed as a way to adjust stability with respect to hydrogen, desorption. © 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.

CAROLINA chickadee , *CHICKADEE behavior , *PREDATORY animals , *COMPARATIVE studies , *ANTIPREDATOR behavior - Abstract
When animals detect predators they modify their behavior to avoid predation. However, less is known about whether prey species modify their behavior in response to predator body and behavioral cues. Recent studies indicated that tufted titmice, a small songbird, decreased their foraging behavior and increased their calling rates when they detected a potential predator facing toward a feeder they were using, compared to a potential predator facing away from that feeder. Here, we tested whether related Carolina chickadees, Poecile carolinensis, were also sensitive not just to the presence of a predator model, but to its facial/head orientation. Although chickadees are closely related to titmice, recent studies in different populations suggest chickadees respond to risky contexts involving predators differently than titmice. We conducted two field studies near feeders the birds were exploiting. In Study One, a mask-wearing human observer stood near the feeder. In Study Two, a model of a domestic cat was positioned near the feeder. In both studies, the potential threatening stimulus either faced toward or faced away from the feeder. Chickadees avoided the feeder more in both studies when the potential predator was present, and showed strongest feeder avoidance when the potential predator faced toward the feeder. Chickadee calling behavior was also affected by the facial orientation of the potential predator in Study 1. These results suggest that, like titmice, chickadees exhibit predation-risk-sensitive foraging and calling behavior, in relation to facial and head orientation of potential threats. These small birds seem to attend to the likely visual space of potential predators. Sensitivity to predator cues like behavior and body posture must become more central to our theories and models of anti-predator behavioral systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
