Coastal marine ecosystems are very complex and composed of myriad organisms, including offshore, coastal, and migratory fish occupying diverse trophic positions (TPs) in food webs. The illustration of trophic hierarchy based on the TP and resource utilization of individual organisms remains challenging. In this study, we applied compound-specific isotope analysis of amino acids to estimate the TP and isotopic baseline (i.e. δ15N values of primary resources at the base of food webs) for 13 fish and 1 squid species in a coastal area of Sagami Bay, Japan, where a large diversity in the isotopic baseline is caused by an admixture of ocean currents and artificial nitrogen inputs. Our results indicate that the TP of fish and squid varies between 2.9 and 3.9 (i.e. omnivorous, carnivorous, and tertiary consumers), with low variation within individual species. Moreover, the δ15N values of phenylalanine revealed the diversity of isotopic baselines between and within species. Low values (7.8-10.3‰) and high values (18.6-19.2‰), with a small variation (1σ < 1.0‰), were found in 2 offshore species and 3 coastal species, respectively. In contrast, highly variable values (9.8-19.7‰), with large variation within species (1σ > 1.0‰), were found for the remaining 9 migratory species. These results represent evidence of differential trophic exploitation of habitats between offshore and coastal species, particularly among individuals of migratory species, that were all collected in a single area of Sagami Bay.

Spotnape ponyfish (Nuchequula nuchalis) is a dominant species that is broadly distributed from estuarine to deep-bay areas, reflecting a euryhaline habitat. Apolipoprotein AI (ApoAI) is a main component of plasma lipoproteins and has crucial roles in lipid metabolism and the defense immune system. In this study, we characterized the N. nuchalis ApoAI gene and analyzed the expression of the ApoAI transcript in N. nuchalis collected at various sites in the estuary and the deep-bay area which have different salinities. Owing to the fish’s mobility, we conducted stable isotope analyses to confirm the habitat characteristics of N. nuchalis. Carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) from N. nuchalis indicated different feeding sources and trophic levels in the estuarine and deep-bay habitats. The characterized N. nuchalis ApoAI displayed residual repeats that formed a pair of alpha helices, indicating that the protein belongs to the apolipoprotein family. In the phylogenetic analysis, there was no sister group of N. nuchalis ApoAI among the large clades of fish species. The transcriptional expression level of ApoAI was higher in N. nuchalis inhabiting the deep-bay area with a high salinity (over 31 psu) than in N. nuchalis inhabiting the top of the estuary with a low salinity (6~15 psu). In addition, the expression patterns of N. nuchalis ApoAI were positively correlated with environmental factors (transparency, pH, TC, and TIC) in the high salinity area. These results suggest that ApoAI gene expression can reflect habitat characteristics of N. nuchalis which traverse broad salinity ranges and is associated with functional roles of osmoregulation and lipid metabolism for fish growth and development.

This study reports isotopic evidence of a unique and highly efficient trophic structure based on a rarely reported benthic diatom species in a rapidly warming Antarctic fjord (Marian Cove; MC). Recent surveys of MC revealed a very conspicuous feature, an intense, persistent benthic diatom bloom (‘benthic diatom bush’) overgrowing a variety of common megabenthic fauna, primarily filter feeders (bivalves, ascidians, and demosponges), which occurred widely at shallow depths. To ascertain if the benthic diatom bloom is consumed as a primary food source, δ13C and δ15N were analyzed in the associated filter feeders and other herbivores, as well as in the diatom bush and other potential food sources (microphytobenthos, sedimentary organic matter and macroalgae). The analysis showed that the δ13C values of all filter feeders (−23.5 to −25.2‰) were very similar to those of the diatom bush (−23.1 to −23.6‰), strongly suggesting that these benthic diatoms are the principal diet of the associated filter feeders. The isotopic signatures of the other food sources were very close to those of the diatom bush, indicating that the organic matter had the same origin, namely benthic diatoms. Given its quality, quantity and availability, the diatom bush could be regarded as the primary food source. The benthic diatom bush was predominated by the chain-forming centric diatom Paralia sp., which occurs in shallow coastal waters with a wide range of salinity in various geographic localities. Thus, the Paralia sp. bloom in this rapidly warming fjord also indicates its potential utility as an indicator of climate-induced environmental changes. Additional isotopic analysis of other common fauna showed that the benthic food web in this fjord comprised up to four trophic levels of consumers, with starfish and isopods at the apex. Given that filter feeders comprise the largest trophic group in the cove and many other Antarctic coastal waters, the results of this study strongly suggest that benthic diatoms are of prime importance in supporting the benthic food web in MC, and possibly other nearshore Antarctic waters. Further studies on the mechanism underlying benthic diatom blooms and their relevance to climate-induced processes would provide better project future scenarios for rapidly warming fjord ecosystems.

The Macrophthalmus japonicus crab, which inhabits tidal flat sediments, is a marine invertebrate that provides nutrient and organic matter cycling as a means of purification. Here, we characterized the M. japonicus p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) gene, which plays key roles in the regulation of cellular immune and apoptosis responses. M. japonicusp38 MAPK displayed the characteristics of the conserved MAPK family with Thr-Gly-Tyr (TGY) motif and substrate-binding site Ala-Thr-Arg-Trp (ATRW). The amino acid sequence of the M. japonicus p38 MAPK showed a close phylogenetic relationship to Eriocheir sinensis MAPK14 and Scylla paramamosainp38 MAPK. The phylogenetic tree displayed two origins of p38 MAPK: crustacean and insect. The tissue distribution patterns showed the highest expression in the gills and hepatopancreas of M. japonicus crab. In addition, p38 MAPK expression in M. japonicus gills and hepatopancreas was evaluated after exposure to environmental pollutants such as perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), irgarol, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and bisphenol A (BPA). In the gills, p38 MAPK expression significantly increased after exposure to all concentrations of the chemicals on day 7. However, on day 1, there were increased p38 MAPK responses observed after PFOS and irgarol exposure, whereas decreased p38 MAPK responses were observed after DEHP and BPA exposure. The upregulation of p38 MAPK gene also significantly led to M. japonicus hepatopancreas being undertested in all environmental pollutants. The findings in this study supported that anti-stress responses against exposure to environmental pollutants were reflected in changes in expression levels in M. japonicusp38 MAPK signaling regulation as a cellular defense mechanism.

To identify key factors that control primary production (P.P.) and trigger cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs), we investigated spatio-temporal variations in P.P. in a continuous weir system in the Nakdong River once or twice a month from April to October 2018. P.P. was measured through an in-situ incubation experiment using a 13C tracer. Relative proportion of pigment-based phytoplankton composition was calculated by the CHEMTAX program based on pigment analysis using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). P.P. was higher in spring (1130 &plusmn, 1140 mg C m&minus, 2 d&minus, 1) and summer (1060 &plusmn, 814 mg C m&minus, 1) than autumn (180 &plusmn, 220 mg C m&minus, 1), and tended to increase downstream. P.P. was negatively related to PO43&minus, (r = &minus, 0.41, p &lt, 0.01) due to utilization by phytoplankton during the spring and summer when it was high. The relative proportion of pigment-based cyanobacteria (mainly Microcystis sp.) was positively correlated with water temperature (r = 0.79, p &lt, 0.01) and hydraulic retention time (HRT, r = 0.67, p &lt, 0.01), suggesting that these two factors should affect cHABs in summer. Therefore, to control HRT could be one of the solutions for reducing cHABs in a continuous weir system.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in rivers are an important factor in pollution management due to the abundance of stored carbon. Using fluorescent spectroscopy, we investigated the temporal and spatial dynamics of DOM compositions, as well as their properties, for two of the major four regulated rivers&mdash, Han River (HR) and Geum River (GR) in South Korea. We collected eight sampling sites, four from each of the two rivers (from close to the weirs) in order to observe the integrated effects of different land use (terrestrial input) during the monsoon (July) and post-monsoon periods (September). High integral values of DOM compositions (July: 30.81 &plusmn, 9.71 &times, 103 vs. September: 1.78 &plusmn, 0.66 &times, 103) were present in all eight sites after heavy rainfall during the monsoon period, which indicated that Asian monsoon climates occupy a potent role in the DOM compositions of the rivers. Regarding DOM compositions, tryptophan-like and fulvic acid-like components were predominant in HR and GR, especially in GR with high integral values of protein-like and humus components. However, the properties of terrestrial DOM between HR and GR are markedly different. These results considered due to the different land use, where the terrestrial DOM shows a low degree of humification due to a high percentage of agriculture and urban land use in GR. Furthermore, these two rivers are typical regulated rivers, due to their weir constructions. High values of DOM components were present in the downstream of the weirs, however, increasingly high patterns appeared in the HR because of heavy rainfall (511.01 mm in HR, 376.33 mm in GR). In addition, a lower increasing trend of humic-like component was present in the GR due to a low percentage of forest land use/cover. These results suggest that the effect of the weir on rivers can be highlighted by the different percentages of land use/cover under the conditions of the monsoon period. Hence, DOM fluorescence can serve as an effective indicator for providing an early signal for the complex impacts of the different land use and rainfall in the regulated river systems.

Chironomidae larvae play an important role in the food chain of river ecosystems in Korea, where it is dominant. However, detailed information on the diet of Chironomidae larvae are still lacking. The purpose of this study was to identify the gut contents of 4th instar larvae of a Chironomidae inhabiting four large-scale weirs (Sejong Weir, Juksan Weir, Gangjeong-Goryeong Weir, and Dalseong Weir) using a DNA meta-barcoding approach. We found that dominant Operational Taxonomic Unit (OUT) was assigned to Paractinolaimus sp. (Nematoda), and the sub-dominant OTU was assigned to Dicrotendipes fumidus (Chironomidae). The most common OTUs among the individuals included phytoplankton, such as Tetrahymena sp., D. armatus, Pseudopediastrum sp., Tetradesmus dimorphus, Biddulphia tridens, and Desmodesmus spp. We calculated the selectivity index (E&rsquo, ) and provided scientific evidence that Chironomidae larvae have a significant preference (E&rsquo, &gt, 0.5) for Desmodesmus armatus, E. minima, and T. dimorphus, while it does not show preference for other species found in its gut. Differences in physico-chemical factors, such as water quality, nutrients, Chl-a, and carbon concentrations, resulting from anthropogenic impacts (i.e., construction of large-scale weirs) as well as the particle size of prey organisms (small-sized single cell) and effects of chemicals (chemokinesis) could affect the feeding behavior of Chironomidae larvae.

Trophic magnification factor (TMF) of persistent toxic substances (PTSs: Hg, PCBs, PAHs, and styrene oligomers (SOs)) in a coastal food web (12 fish and four invertebrates) was determined in Ulsan Bay, South Korea. The nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ15N) of amino acids [δ15NGlu−Phe based on glutamic acid (δ15NGlu) and phenylalanine (δ15NPhe)] were used to estimate the trophic position (TPGlu−Phe) of organisms. The TPGlu−Phe of organisms ranged from 1.64 to 3.69, which was lower than TP estimated by δ15N of bulk particulate organic matter (TPBulk: 2.46–4.21). Mercury and CB 138, 153, 187, and 180 were biomagnified through the whole food web (TMF > 1), while other PTSs, such as PAHs and SOs were not (biodilution of SOs firstly reported). In particular, the trophic transfer of PTSs was pronounced in the resident fish (e.g., rock bream, sea perch, Korean rockfish). Of note, CB 99, 101, 118, and 183 were additionally found to be biomagnifying PTSs in these species. Thus, fish residency appears to represent an important factor in determining the TMF of PTSs in the coastal environment. Overall, δ15NGlu−Phe provided accurate TPs of organisms and could be applied to determine the trophic transfer of PTSs in coastal food webs.

The trophic magnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which is the relationship between POP concentration and the trophic position (TPs) of an organism, is considered an important factor for prioritizing chemicals of concern in the environment. Organismal TPs are typically based on nitrogen isotope ratios of bulk tissue (δ15Nbulk). In this study, nitrogen isotope ratios of amino acids (δ15NAAs), a more precise approach for TP estimation (TPAAs), was applied and compared with estimations of TP based on δ15Nbulk (TPbulk) in marine organisms living in Masan Bay, South Korea. Compound-specific isotope analysis of the amino acids (CSIA-AAs) in fish samples allows us to calculate robust TPs by correcting the variation in baseline isotope values with use of the δ15Nbulk technique. In a benthic food chain, this approach reveals more significant magnification trends for POPs [polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)] than those revealed by analysis of the relationship between TPbulk and POPs. The trophic magnification factors (TMF) associated with TPAAs were significant for some POPs, especially pp′-DDD and chlordane. The results presented in this study suggest that TP calculations based on δ15NAAs are an effective tool for characterizing trophic magnification trends related to the fates of various pollutants. To adapt to ecological and environmental conditions, species can change their ecological niche (e.g., interactions among species) and function (e.g., prey‐predation, diet competition, and habitat segregation) at the species and guild levels. Stable isotope analysis of bulk carbon and nitrogen of organisms has conventionally been used to evaluate such adaptabilities in the scenopoetic and bionomic views as the isotopic niche width.Compound‐specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) of nitrogen within amino acids provides trophic information without any disruption of scenopoetic views in the isotope ratios, unlike conventional bulk isotope analysis provides both information and therefore frequently hinders its usefulness for trophic information.We performed CSIA of amino acids to understand the trophic variability of the pike gudgeon Pseudogobio esocinus and largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides as representative specialist and generalist fish species, respectively, from 16 ecologically variable habitats in the four major rivers of Korea.There was little variation (1σ) in the trophic position (TP) among habitats for P. esocinus (± 0.2); however, there was considerably large variation for M. salmoides (± 0.6). The TP of M. salmoides was negatively correlated with the benthic invertebrate indices of the habitats, whereas the TP of P. esocinus showed no significant correlation with any indices. Thus, these two representative fish species have different trophic responses to ecological conditions, which is related to known differences in the trophic niche between specialists (i.e., small niche width) and generalists (i.e., large niche width).Over the past four decades, the conventional bulk isotope analysis has not been capable of deconvoluting “scenopoetic” and “bionomic” information. However, in the present study, we demonstrated that the CSIA of amino acids could isolate trophic niches from the traditional ecological niche composed of trophic and habitat information and evaluated how biological and ecological indices influence the trophic response of specialists and generalists., We first applied compound‐specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids to the ecological niche studies, in order to isolate trophic niche that is accompanied with habitat niche in the conventional bulk isotope method.

To determine distributions, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer of freshwater cyanobacterial toxins such as microcystins (MCs), surface water, suspended solids, sediments, and coastal organisms were collected from seven stations in inner and outer regions of the estuary dam in the Geum River Estuary in June and July 2017. Concentrations of MC variants (MC-LR, -RR, and -YR) in the multimedia samples were analyzed using a HPLC-MS/MS. Trophic position (TP) of organisms (fish, bivalve, gastropod, decapod, and polychaete) was determined by nitrogen stable isotope analyses of both bulk tissues and amino acids. From July to August 2017, great concentrations of MCs were detected in discharged freshwater ranging from 0.4 to 75 μg L−1. Considerable amounts of MCs are delivered to the Geum River Estuary in summer season. MCs spread far away as dissolved phases (18.7–49.5 ng L−1) in July when large amount of freshwater was discharged during the rainy season. Concentrations of MCs in marine organisms varied among species, ranging from 40 to 870 ng g−1 dw. Bioaccumulated MCs tend to decrease with increasing TP of organisms, suggesting that MCs are biodiluted through the marine food web. Compound-specific isotope analysis (nitrogen of amino acids) provides more reliable TPs compared with those by bulk isotope analysis in a closed estuary (such as the Geum River Estuary) with large fluctuations in the isotope ratio of primary producers. We sampled mussels (Mytilus edulis) along the coast of the Korean peninsula, and determined their trophic position (TP) using the nitrogen isotope ratio of amino acids (TPglu/phe). The TPglu/phe of mussels (2.0 to 2.5) is higher than TP of herbivores, suggesting that TP normalization is required to remove the trophic enrichment effect on basal nitrogen isotope ratio. We found similar trends in spatial variation between nitrogen isotopic baseline based on nitrogen isotope ratio of bulk tissue (δ15Nbase-bulk) and that of phenylalanine (δ15Nbase-phe) in mussels, reflecting different nitrogen sources among sampling sites. The present study suggests that δ15Nbase-bulk and δ15Nbase-phe are powerful tools to trace nitrogen isotopic baselines from primary consumers as well as higher TP organisms.

Drastic sea ice retreats in the Antarctic Peninsula, and the consequent environmental changes have brought about the consequences of biological adaptation and food competition. The isotopic niche is reflected by the ecological position and functional role of a species, which can be altered depending on these environmental changes. We assessed the isotopic niche and trophic positions (TP) of 3 seabirds on the Barton Peninsula, King George Island, Antarctica, to understand ecological interaction among the species. The average TP of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) (hereafter “krill”) (2.6 ± 0.1) was estimated by using the compiled published data of the compound-specific nitrogen isotope ratio of glutamic acid and phenylalanine in the Southern Ocean, and TP values of the seabirds based on that of krill to be reliable according to ecological knowledge. Our results on the overlap of the isotopic niches of seabirds suggests potential diet competition among the consumers, such as the brown skua (Stercorarius antarcticus) and south polar skua (Stercorarius maccormicki), whereas the distinct and broad isotopic niche width of kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) suggesting that their adaptation through generalization was related to their extended habitat and various food sources. Our research indicates that isotopic niche of seabirds reflects their survival strategy for food competition. Consequently, these seabirds can be easily influenced by alternative food sources, including terrestrial and human-derived sources, by rapid environmental changes, indicating that they are valuable as key environmental species and require long-term monitoring in the Antarctic Peninsula.

Numerous studies have used stable isotope analysis (SIA) of carbon and nitrogen within the bulk tissues of organisms to determine the trophic structure among organisms in a food web. Recently, SIA has evolved to compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) of nitrogen within amino acids to significantly reduce the uncertainty in the estimated trophic position (TP) of organisms based on the isotopic difference between glutamic acid and phenylalanine within a single organism. However, because the initial offset (β) between glutamic acid and phenylalanine differs between aquatic algae (ca. +3.4‰) and vascular plants (ca. −8.4‰) in food webs that rely on both resources, β should be replaced by a value adapted to the admixture of primary producers for each specimen. In this study, we established a new method involving the β value (βmix) of each consumer specimen determined based on its bulk tissue δ13C value and successfully obtained realistic TPs (TPmix) for organisms in a complex seagrass meadow food web. Remarkable differences between the TPmix and traditional TPalgal values were found in deposit feeders due to the large contribution of seagrass to their basal resources. The estimated TPs of organisms increased by up to 1.5 units (from TPalgal to TPmix), in terms of trophic transfer, when their diets included substantial seagrass-derived contributions. Thus, combinatorial analysis of the amino acid δ15N and specimen-specific βmix values provides better understanding of the trophic interactions in food webs, even in complex seagrass meadow ecosystems.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Stictochironomus akizukii (Tokunaga) was sequenced. The circular mitochondrial genome is 15,052 bp and consists of 13 protein-coding, 3 ribosomal RNAs, and 22 transfer RNA genes (GenBank accession no. MT185679). Results of maximum likelihood analysis showed that this species clustered with other species of the family Chironomidae. This study will contribute to the phylogenetics of genus Stictochironomus and the other genera of Chironomidae.

Stable isotope analysis (SIA) and stomach content analysis (SCA) were conducted to understand ontogenetic niche shifts in silver croaker Pennahia argentata inhabiting the southern coastal waters of the Korean peninsula. Sampled P. argentata were classified into three groups based on their total length (TL, 60–80 mm TL, 80–120 mm TL, and 120–210 mm TL). Carbon isotope (δ13C) ratios were distinguishable, whereas nitrogen isotope (δ15N) ratios were not significantly different among size classes, and Standard Ellipse Area (SEA), estimated by δ13C and δ15N, was expanded with increasing TL from 0.2 ‰2 (60–80 mm TL) to 2.0 ‰2 (120–210 mm TL). SCA results showed variable contribution of dietary items to each size class. In particular, higher dietary contribution of Polychaeta to P. argentata of 80–120 mm TL than 120–210 mm TL mirrored variation in δ13C values of P. argentata in those size classes. Based on the combined analyses involving SIA and SCA, we concluded that P. argentata underwent ontogenetic niche shifts, particularly dietary shifts, with growth stages. Ontogenetic niche shifting is a representative survival strategy in fish, and, therefore, represents essential information for managing fisheries. The present study demonstrated applicability of combined SIA and SCA analyses, not only for dietary resource tracing, but also for ecological niche studies.

This study is the first reconstruction of the paleoenvironment and paleovegetation during the Holocene (interglacial) and last deglaciation periods of the Yellow Sea. Carbon isotope and biomarker ( n -alkane and alkenone) compositions of organic carbon matter (OM) from core 11 YS PCL14 collected from the central Yellow Sea recorded past changes in East Asian Monsoon (EAM) climates. The result shows the variability of the EAM affected the sedimentary profile of total organic carbon (TOC), the stable isotopes of bulk organic carbon (δ 13 C org ), the atomic ratio of carbon and nitrogen (C/N ratio), and biomarker content. The oscillations of TOC along the sediment core might be associated with the paleoceanographic conditions (changes in the sea level) related to the contribution of the autochthonous and allochthonous OM input. Two climatic conditions were distinguished (warm/humid and cold/dry) based on the n -alkane proxy, and the observed changes in δ 13 C of individual n -alkane (δ 13 C ALK ) between the Holocene and last deglaciation were attributed to changes in plant distribution/type. A shift in vegetation type between climatic periods occurred as a result of different photosynthetic response to CO 2 and temperature among C 3 and C 4 plants. The most interesting new finding of this work is the fact that alkenone derived temperature changed independently with global climate change, which might be related to the influence of the Kuroshio current in the Yellow Sea. The variations in the intensity of the EAM could be the main mechanism accounting for the paleoenvironmental and paleoceanographic variation observed in the central Yellow Sea.

During the last several decades, persistent organic pollutants and metals cause great concern for their toxicity in organisms as well as for their bioaccumulation and/or trophic transfer through the food chains in ecosystems. A large number of studies therefore have focused on the trophic levels of organisms to illustrate food web structure, as a critical component in the study of pollutant dynamics and biomagnification. The trends in biomagnification of pollutants in food webs indeed provide fundamental information about the properties and fates of pollutants in ecosystems. The trophic magnification supports the establishment of a reliable trophic structure, which can further aid the understanding of the transport and exposure routes of contaminants in accumulation and risk assessments. Recently, efforts to interpret the food web structure using carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios have contributed to better understanding of the fate of pollutants in the ecosystem. However, it is known that this isotope analysis of bulk ones has many weaknesses, particularly for uncertainties on the estimate of trophic levels and therefore of magnification factors for studied organisms, enough to support a regulatory interpretation. In this review, we collate studies that investigated biomagnification characteristics of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, along with calculated trophic magnification factors. Moreover, we introduce a novel approach, compound-specific stable isotope analysis of nitrogen in amino acids, to establish reliable food web structures and accurate trophic levels for biomagnification studies. This method promises to provide sound results for interpreting the influence of the pollutant in organisms, along with their bioaccumulation and magnification characteristics, as well as that in ecosystem.

Coastal areas are subjected to significant allochthonous organic matter deposits from surrounding areas; however, limited information is available on the source and delivery of this organic matter. In this study, to assess seasonal changes in the sources of organic matter in Lake Sihwa (Korea), biodegradability, fluorescence property, and stable isotopic compositions (carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur) of the organic matter were determined. Water samples were collected from the inner lake (n = 9) and inland creeks (n = 10) in five separate events, from November 2012 to October 2013. Organic matter originating from rural, urban, and industrial areas was examined as the potential sources. The organic matter contents and biodegradability in the industrial area were the highest, whereas low concentrations and poor biodegradability of organic matter were found in the rural area, and moderate properties were observed in the urban area. In Lake Sihwa, a large concentration of total organic matter and enhanced biodegradability were observed during March and August. However, main source of organic matter differed between the sampling events. The largest contribution of organic matter, deriving from marine phytoplankton, was found in March. On the other hand, in August, the organic matter originating from the industrial area, which is characterized by high levels of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, was significantly increased. Our results could be useful to enhance the management of water bodies aimed at reducing the organic matter concentrations and improving the water quality of Lake Sihwa, and even that of the Yellow Sea.

Biomass and community composition of microphytobentos in tidal flats were studied by HPLC analysis and also investigated to examine the relationship between microphytobenthic pigments and Adenosine-5" triphosphate (ATP) as an index of total microbial biomass in intertidal environments (muddy and sandy sediment) of Gyeonggi Bay, west coast of Korea. Microphytobenthic pigments and ATP concentration in muddy sediment were the highest at the surface while the biomass of microphytobenthos in sandy sediment was the highest at the sub-surface (0.75 cm sediment depth). The detected pigments of microphytobenthos were chlorophyll a, b (euglenophytes), c3, peridinin (dinoflagellates), fucoxanthin (diatom or chrysophytes), diadinoxanthin, alloxanthin (cryptophytes), diatoxanthin, zeaxanthin (cyanobacteria), β-carotein, and pheophytin a (the degraded product of chlorophyll a). Among the pigments which were detected, the concentration of fucoxanthin was the highest, indicating that diatoms dominated in the microphytobenthic community of the tidal flats. There was little significant correlation between OC (Organic Carbon) and ATP in both sediments. However, a positive correlation between chlorophyll a concentration and ATP concentration was found in sandy sediment, suggesting that microbial biomass could be affected by labile OC derived from microphytobenthos. These results provide information that may help us understand the relationship between microphytobenthos and microbial biomass in different intertidal sediment environments.

We investigated molecular distributions and stable carbon isotopic compositions (δ13C) of sedimentary n-alkanes (C15C35) in the riverbank and marine surface sediments to trace natural and anthropogenic organic carbon (OC) sources in the eastern Yellow Sea which is a river dominated marginal sea. Molecular distributions of n-alkanes are overall dominated by odd-carbon-numbered high molecular weight n-C27, n-C29, and n-C31. The δ13C signatures of n-C27, n-C29, and n-C31 indicate a large contribution of C3 gymnosperms as the main source of n-alkanes, with the values of −29.5 ± 1.3‰, −30.3 ± 2.0‰, and −30.0 ± 1.7‰, respectively. However, the contribution of thermally matured petroleum-derived OC to the sedimentary OC pool is also evident, especially in the southern part of the study area as shown by the low carbon preference index (CPI25-33
