1. Confronting Bullying in the Digital Age: Role of Extended Reality

Abstract

This paper examines how Extending Reality (XR) technologies, such as Virtual and Augmented Reality, can provide innovative solutions for preventing and addressing bullying. A search for relevant articles was conducted in five electronic databases (ACM, Emerald, Science Direct, Scopus, and Web of Science), resulting in the identification of 867 articles published between 2010-2023, from which 20 were selected for analysis. The selected articles provide insights into the potential applications of XR in addressing bullying, including immersive empathy training and virtual simulations of bullying scenarios. The paper concludes by highlighting the potential of XR technologies and providing recommendations for bullying recognition, prevention, and reduction to create safer communities in schools. The study results have implications for future research in designing and implementing XR technology in this field.

Abstract

Abstract Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) has been previously used as a tool for pathogen identification within communities. After the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) outbreak, in 2020, Daughton proposed the implementation of a wastewater surveillance strategy that could determine the incidence of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) nationally. Individuals in various stages of SARS-CoV-2 infection, including presymptomatic, asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, can be identified as carriers of the virus in their urine, saliva, stool and other bodily secretions. Studies using this method were conducted to monitor the prevalence of the virus in high-density populations, such as cities but also in smaller communities, such as schools and college campuses. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of wastewater surveillance in Bucharest, Romania, and wastewater samples were collected weekly from seven locations between July and September 2023. RNA (ribonucleic acid) extraction, followed by dPCR (digital polymerase chain reaction) analysis, was performed to detect viral genetic material. Additionally, NGS (next generation sequencing) technology was used to identify the circulating variants within the wastewater of Bucharest, Romania. Preliminary results indicate the successful detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater, providing valuable insights into the circulation of the virus within the community.

10. Data analysis evidence beyond correlation of a possible causal impact of weather on the COVID-19 spread, mediated by human mobility

Abstract

Abstract Previous correlative and modeling approaches indicate influences of environmental factors on COVID-19 spread through atmospheric conditions’ impact on virus survival and transmission or host susceptibility. However, causal connections from environmental factors to the pandemic, mediated by human mobility, received less attention. We use the technique of Convergent Cross Mapping to identify the causal connections, beyond correlation at the country level, between pairs of variables associated with weather conditions, human mobility, and the number of COVID-19 cases for 32 European states. Here, we present data-based evidence that the relatively reduced number of cases registered in Northern Europe is related to the causal impact of precipitation on people’s decision to spend more time at home and that the relatively large number of cases observed in Southern Europe is linked to people’s choice to spend time outdoors during warm days. We also emphasize the channels of the significant impact of the pandemic on human mobility. The weather-human mobility connections inferred here are relevant not only for COVID-19 spread but also for any other virus transmitted through human interactions. These results may help authorities and public health experts contain possible future waves of the COVID-19 pandemic or limit the threats of similar human-to-human transmitted viruses.

Abstract

The first search for the lepton number violating decay K+→π0π−μ+e+ and lepton flavour violating decays K+→π0π+μ−e+, K+→π0π+μ+e− has been performed using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2016–2018. Upper limits of 2.9×10−10, 3.1×10−10 and 5.0×10−10, respectively, are obtained at 90% CL for the branching ratios of the three decays on the assumption of uniform phase-space distributions.

Abstract

Analysis of comparable discharges fuelled by either deuterium or protium reveals a clear relationship between the isotope mass and the H-mode density limit. Notably, the density limit is significantly lower in protium, showing a reduction of up to 35 % compared to identical deuterium plasma conditions. Within mixed H-mode density limit (HDL) plasmas, the maximum achievable density, or H-mode density limit, decreases with increasing protium concentration, denoted as cH. For instance, the highest corresponding maximum Greenwald fraction (fGW) of about 1.02 was observed in the pulse with the lowest cH value of 4.4 %. This fGW decreases to 0.96 at cH = 48 %. The average atomic mass, A¯, of the plasma species decreases in these pulses from the value of 1.96 (cH = 4.4 %) down to 1.52 (cH = 48 %). Interestingly, the maximum achievable density appears to be largely unaffected by the applied power value, regardless of whether deuterium or protium is used, as well as under mixed H/D fuelling conditions.Additionally, the measured Greenwald fractions are agreed with a heuristic model based on the SOL pressure threshold of an MHD instability, as proposed by Goldston. This comparison, especially concerning the model’s dependence on isotopic mass, shows full consistency between the measured and predicted Greenwald fractions.

Abstract

A timely and long-term programme of kaon decay measurements at a new level of precision is presented, leveraging the capabilities of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The proposed programme is firmly anchored on the experience built up studying kaon decays at the SPS over the past four decades, and includes rare processes, CP violation, dark sectors, symmetry tests and other tests of the Standard Model. The experimental programme is based on a staged approach involving experiments with charged and neutral kaon beams, as well as operation in beam-dump mode. Abstract

Semaglutide (SEM), a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, has garnered increasing interest for its potential therapeutic effects in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD). This review provides a comprehensive description of SEM’s mechanism of action and its effects in preclinical studies of these debilitating conditions. In animal models of AD, SEM has proved beneficial effects on multiple pathological hallmarks of the disease. SEM administration has been associated with reductions in amyloid-beta plaque deposition and mitigation of neuroinflammation. Moreover, SEM treatment has been shown to ameliorate behavioral deficits related to anxiety and social interaction. SEM-treated animals exhibit improvements in spatial learning and memory retention tasks, as evidenced by enhanced performance in maze navigation tests and novel object recognition assays. Similarly, in animal models of PD, SEM has demonstrated promising neuroprotective effects through various mechanisms. These include modulation of neuroinflammation, enhancement of mitochondrial function, and promotion of neurogenesis. Additionally, SEM has been shown to improve motor function and ameliorate dopaminergic neuronal loss, offering the potential for disease-modifying treatment strategies. Overall, the accumulating evidence from preclinical studies suggests that SEM holds promise as a novel therapeutic approach for AD and PD. Further research is warranted to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of SEM’s neuroprotective effects and to translate these findings into clinical applications for the treatment of these devastating neurodegenerative disorders.

19. Migration of health workers: key findings from Romania

Abstract

The migration of medical staff results in the diminution of human resources in the health sector, undermining the capacity of developing countries' health systems to provide medical services equitably. Various factors, such as economic, professional, political, social, or personal considerations, contribute to the decision of health workers to emigrate. This paper's primary objective is to analyze the prevailing trends in the migration flows and stocks of physicians and nurses, with a focus on identifying the principal pull factors of migration. The preferred destination countries for Romanian health professionals include the UK, Germany, France, and Italy. Notably, Germany stands out as a leader in health care professionals' migration flows, characterized by two distinct migration periods: the first featuring exceptionally high levels of physician migration and the second marked by increasing levels of nurses' migration. Through panel data regression analysis, we have established that the pull factors for physicians differ from those for nurses. For physicians, the presence of a Romanian community of health professionals in the destination countries is crucial, whereas for nurses, the development level of the destination country holds top importance.

Abstract

This study emphasises the complexity of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission dynamics by conducting a wetland case study along the Dambovita River. Our evaluation highlights the importance of considering spatial variability, meteorological parameters and water quality parameters. The variations in CO2 emissions have been monitored using two complementary methods: a closed static chamber and a closed dynamic chamber. The closed dynamic chamber method has the highest level of confidence. The statistical results of correlations facilitated the validation of the closed static chamber method and its independent use in wetland ecosystems. Also, our findings revealed distinct patterns in emissions across locations that are influenced by parameters such as pH, redox potential (ORP), chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen concentration (DO), and temperature for the water–atmosphere interface. These results contribute to the understanding of the carbon cycle in wetlands and contribute to the improvement of greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting by obtaining data with a high level of confidence, regarding the role of wetland ecosystems in the carbon cycle.

Abstract

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a significant concern in children, contributing to 6–20% of cases in pediatric intensive care units. This study evaluates the roles of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) usage in the etiology of UGIB in children, with a particular focus on trends observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 103 pediatric patients who underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) for UGIB between January 2015 and December 2023. Of these, 88 patients were included in the final analysis, where the source of bleeding was successfully identified. Hematemesis was the most common presentation, and the source of bleeding was identified in 85.43% of cases. The prevalence of H. pylori infection remained stable across the pre-pandemic (39.7%) and post-pandemic (36.7%) periods. However, NSAID usage increased nearly threefold during the pandemic, with 36.7% of post-pandemic UGIB cases associated with NSAID use, compared to 12.1% pre-pandemic. These findings underscore the significant roles of H. pylori and NSAID use in pediatric UGIB, with a notable increase in NSAID-related cases during the pandemic.

22. Symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder and cycle phase are associated with enhanced facial emotion detection: An online cross-sectional study

Background: Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a depressive disorder affecting 5%–8% of people with menstrual cycles. Despite evidence that facial emotion detection is altered in depressive disorders, with enhanced detection of negative emotions (negativity bias), minimal research exists on premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Objectives: The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms and the premenstrual phase on accuracy and intensity at detection of facial emotions. Design: Cross-sectional quasi-experimental design. Method: The Facial Emotion Detection Task was administered to 72 individuals assigned female at birth with no premenstrual dysphoric disorder ( n = 30), and provisional PMDD ( n = 42), based on a retrospective Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders—Fifth Edition -based measure of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Facial emotion detection was examined both irrespective of menstrual cycle phase, and as a function of premenstrual phase (yes, no). The task used neutral-to-emotional facial expression morphs (15 images/morph). Participants indicated the emotion detected for each image within the progressive intensity morph. For all six basic emotions (sad, angry, fearful, happy, disgust, and surprise), two scores were calculated: accuracy of responses and the intensity within the morph at which the correct emotion was first detected (image number). Results: Individuals reporting moderate/severe symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder had more accurate and earlier detection of disgust, regardless of cycle phase. In addition, those with provisional premenstrual dysphoric disorder detected sad emotions earlier. A premenstrual dysphoric disorder group × cycle phase interaction also emerged: individuals reporting premenstrual dysphoric disorder symptoms were more accurate at detecting facial emotions during the premenstrual phase compared to the rest of the cycle, with a large effect size for sad emotions. Conclusion: The findings suggest enhanced facial emotion processing in individuals reporting symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, particularly for sadness and disgust. However, replication is required with larger samples and prospective designs. This premenstrual dysphoric disorder premenstrual emotion detection advantage suggests an adaptive cognitive mechanism in premenstrual syndrome/premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and challenges stigma surrounding premenstrual experiences.

Abstract Measurement of the ultra-rare K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ {K}^{+}\to {\pi}^{+}\nu \overline{\nu} $$ decay at the NA62 experiment at CERN requires high-performance particle identification to distinguish muons from pions. Calorimetric identification currently in use, based on a boosted decision tree algorithm, achieves a muon misidentification probability of 1.2 × 10 −5 for a pion identification efficiency of 75% in the momentum range of 15–40 GeV/c. In this work, calorimetric identification performance is improved by developing an algorithm based on a convolutional neural network classifier augmented by a filter. Muon misidentification probability is reduced by a factor of six with respect to the current value for a fixed pion-identification efficiency of 75%. Alternatively, pion identification efficiency is improved from 72% to 91% for a fixed muon misidentification probability of 10 −5.

Abstract

Virtual reality (VR) driving simulators are very promising tools for driver assessment since they provide a controlled and adaptable setting for behavior analysis. At the same time, wearable sensor technology provides a well-suited and valuable approach to evaluating the behavior of drivers and their physiological or psychological state. This review paper investigates the potential of wearable sensors in VR driving simulators. Methods: A literature search was performed on four databases (Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and IEEE Xplore) using appropriate search terms to retrieve scientific articles from a period of eleven years, from 2013 to 2023. Results: After removing duplicates and irrelevant papers, 44 studies were selected for analysis. Some important aspects were extracted and presented: the number of publications per year, countries of publication, the source of publications, study aims, characteristics of the participants, and types of wearable sensors. Moreover, an analysis and discussion of different aspects are provided. To improve car simulators that use virtual reality technologies and boost the effectiveness of particular driver training programs, data from the studies included in this systematic review and those scheduled for the upcoming years may be of interest.

Abstract

Abstract A sample of 1.3 × 105 K + → π 0 e + νγ candidates with less than 1% background was collected by the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS in 2017–2018. Branching fraction measurements are obtained at percent relative precision in three restricted kinematic regions, improving on existing results by a factor larger than two. An asymmetry, possibly related to T-violation, is investigated with no evidence observed within the achieved precision.

Abstract

Abstract The NA62 experiment at CERN, designed to study the ultra-rare decay K + → π + ν ν ¯ $$ \nu \overline{\nu} $$ , has also collected data in beam-dump mode. In this configuration, dark photons may be produced by protons dumped on an absorber and reach a decay volume beginning 80 m downstream. A search for dark photons decaying in flight to μ + μ − pairs is reported, based on a sample of 1.4 × 1017 protons on dump collected in 2021. No evidence for a dark photon signal is observed. A region of the parameter space is excluded at 90% CL, improving on previous experimental limits for dark photon masses between 215 and 550 MeV/c 2.

Abstract

A sample of 3984 candidates of the K+→π+γγ decay, with an estimated background of 291±14 events, was collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN during 2017–2018. In order to describe the observed di-photon mass spectrum, the next-to-leading order contribution in chiral perturbation theory was found to be necessary. The decay branching ratio in the full kinematic range is measured to be (9.61±0.17)×10−7. The first search for production and prompt decay of an axion-like particle with gluon coupling in the process K+→π+a, a→γγ is also reported.

Abstract

The present study aims to present a bibliometric analysis of publications related to “Extended Reality” (XR) in the automotive sector. XR is revolutionizing the industry in all fields, and the automotive is one of the sectors that has had much to gain from this technology and its components (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality). Articles on XR in the automotive field that were published from 2012 to 2022 were retrieved from the Scopus database. Extracted items were analysed in terms of the document type, document language, year of publication, country, authors, affiliations, sources, citations, keywords, and research domains. The open-source tool VOSviewer was used to visualize trends in research on XR applied to automotive. The analyses of 1584 documents revealed that the total number of publications has continually increased over the last 11 years. The country producing most of the articles in this field was Germany, followed by the United States and China. The most productive journal is Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour and the institution that issued most of the articles is Technical University of Munich. From the analysis of author keywords, the prominent research areas currently involving the use of XR technologies in automotive can be highlighted: virtual prototyping, design, manufacturing, sales, training, driver or pedestrian behaviour analysis, and ergonomics. More recently, terms like artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles have started to be used more frequently in studies in the field. The current study reveals an expanding corpus of literature on XR-based applications for the automotive sector using bibliometric methods. Researchers and stakeholders can use this study as a useful reference to comprehend the big picture and the state-of-the-art in this area.

Abstract

A unitary model of drug release dynamics is proposed, assuming that the polymer–drug system can be assimilated into a multifractal mathematical object. Then, we made a description of drug release dynamics that implies, via Scale Relativity Theory, the functionality of continuous and undifferentiable curves (fractal or multifractal curves), possibly leading to holographic-like behaviors. At such a conjuncture, the Schrödinger and Madelung multifractal scenarios become compatible: in the Schrödinger multifractal scenario, various modes of drug release can be “mimicked” (via period doubling, damped oscillations, modulated and “chaotic” regimes), while the Madelung multifractal scenario involves multifractal diffusion laws (Fickian and non-Fickian diffusions). In conclusion, we propose a unitary model for describing release dynamics in polymer–drug systems. In the model proposed, the polymer–drug dynamics can be described by employing the Scale Relativity Theory in the monofractal case or also in the multifractal one.

Abstract

This paper explores the plasma parameters of helium and hydrogen Ion Cyclotron Wall Conditioning (ICWC) discharges performed in JET as part of a He/H fuelling changeover experiment. The conducted study shows that plasma with a higher density is formed in helium than in hydrogen. A distinct glow in the ion cyclotron resonance zone is observed throughout the discharge in He. In H-ICWC discharges, a lower radio-frequency coupling efficiency and coupled power was observed than in He-ICWC discharges. While the helium concentration decreased with the number of H-ICWC pulses and the same for hydrogen in He-ICWC, which is the intended result of the plasma wall interaction in the ICWC changeover procedure, the main features of hydrogen as well as the helium IC discharge do not change dramatically.

Abstract

The first search for ultra-rare K+ decays into the π+e+e−e+e− final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018. An upper limit of 1.4×10−8 at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the K+→π+e+e−e+e− decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be (7.2±0.7)×10−11. Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of 10−9 for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: K+→π+aa, a→e+e− and K+→π+S, S→A′A′, A′→e+e−.

Abstract

The injunction to practice the digital sobriety came over the management rationalization processes, to which training actors are already subjected. But sobriety is not just about reducing environmental and energy footprints, but also social ones. These three types of footprints, which are interdependent and in tension, are unevenly distributed with respect to socio-professional category, gender, age, place etc. Thus, the measures envisaged to reduce these footprints, if not adapted to the different configurations, may exacerbate inequalities, or create new ones, which weighs on their acceptability and effectiveness. This risk of rejection is increased by the complexity of regulations at different levels, both national and international. Practicing sobriety therefore depends on trainers’ capacity for initiative, their room for action, and therefore on collective and organizational factors specific to each local context. But the “turnkey” solutions don’t exist. Everything remains to be done, starting with the ad hoc indicators needed to assess locally the extent of these footprints, and subsequently to measure the effectiveness of the measures tested. By putting the work of trainers back at the forefront, this article offers a framework for exploratory and prospective thinking, and raises the question of the de-industrialization of training.

Abstract

(1) Background: Numerous variables could influence the risk of rectal cancer recurrence or metastasis, and machine learning (ML)-based algorithms can help us refine the risk stratification process of these patients and choose the best therapeutic approach. The aim of this study was to assess the predictive performance of 4 ML-based models for the prediction of local recurrence or distant metastasis in patients with locally advanced low rectal adenocarcinomas who underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgical treatment; (2) Methods: Patients who were admitted at the first Oncologic Surgical Clinic from the Regional Institute of Oncology, Iasi, Romania were retrospectively included in this study between November 2019 and July 2023. Decision tree (DT), naïve Bayes (NB), support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF) were used to analyze imagistic, surgical, and pathological data retrieved from the medical files, and their predictive performance was assessed; (3) Results: The best predictive performance was achieved by RF when used to predict disease recurrence (accuracy: 90.85%) or distant metastasis (accuracy: 89.63%). RF was closely followed by SVM (accuracy for recurrence 87.8%; accuracy for metastasis: 87.2%) in terms of predictive performance. NB and DT achieved moderate predictive power for the evaluated outcomes; (4) Conclusions: Complex algorithms such as RF and SVM could be useful for improving the prediction of adverse oncological outcomes in patients with low rectal adenocarcinoma.

40. Predicting the Feasibility of Curative Resection in Low Rectal Cancer: Insights from a Prospective Observational Study on Preoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Accuracy

Abstract

Background and Objectives: A positive pathological circumferential resection margin is a key prognostic factor in rectal cancer surgery. The point of this prospective study was to see how well different MRI parameters could predict a positive pathological circumferential resection margin (pCRM) in people who had been diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma, either on their own or when used together. Materials and Methods: Between November 2019 and February 2023, a total of 112 patients were enrolled in this prospective study and followed up for a 36-month period. MRI predictors such as circumferential resection margin (mCRM), presence of extramural venous invasion (mrEMVI), tumor location, and the distance between the tumor and anal verge, taken individually or combined, were evaluated with univariate and sensitivity analyses. Survival estimates in relation to a pCRM status were also determined using Kaplan–Meier analysis. Results: When individually evaluated, the best MRI predictor for the detection of a pCRM in the postsurgical histopathological examination is mrEMVI, which achieved a sensitivity (Se) of 77.78%, a specificity (Sp) of 87.38%, a negative predictive value (NPV) of 97.83%, and an accuracy of 86.61%. Also, the best predictive performance was achieved by a model that comprised all MRI predictors (mCRM+ mrEMVI+ anterior location+ < 4 cm from the anal verge), with an Se of 66.67%, an Sp of 88.46%, an NPV of 96.84%, and an accuracy of 86.73%. The survival rates were significantly higher in the pCRM-negative group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The use of selective individual imaging predictors or combined models could be useful for the prediction of positive pCRM and risk stratification for local recurrence or distant metastasis.

Abstract

Wastewater treatment is crucial for the removal of pollutants and microorganisms from wastewater generated by human activities, but the traditional approach of treating contaminated water presents several drawbacks. A continuously developing solution is the use of materials with photocatalytic properties involving an advanced oxidation process (AOP) due to its efficiency in degrading pollutants without generating harmful byproducts. The development of these metal oxide nanoparticles in an economical, sustainable, and ecologically benign manner is the main challenge facing the entire planet. As a result, hydroxyapatite and zinc oxide were combined in different ratios in a ball-mill for 30 min at 400 rpm to create composites that can be activated under solar radiation (UV). Their photocatalytic activity was evaluated for the degradation of an organic pollutant (methyl orange). The ZnO/HA composites demonstrate significant potential for use in AOPs due to its high efficiency in degrading organic pollutants under UV light, achieving a 99% degradation efficiency of methyl orange after 3h of exposure. The proposed simple approach leads to the development of efficient, low-cost filtering composites.

Abstract

The importance of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes in ecosystematmosphere exchanges has grown due to climate change impacts. Achieving climate neutrality by 2050 requires emission reduction and removals, with land use contributing the most. Despite the advance of techniques to quantify GHG dynamics and their involved parameters, it is still uncertain how GHG fluxes respond to changes in each involved parameter, especially for in-situ conditions. Soil moisture and temperature are important parameters in relation to GHG fluxes, with a high degree of natural variation and influence from climate change. With the aim to establish the sensitivity of GHG fluxes for different soil types to natural and anthropogenic variations of parameters, experiments can be conducted in laboratory conditions with efficient resource allocation. Soils were sampled from parcels of long term in-situ monitored lands and large pots were prepared to create microcosms for tests in laboratory conditions. The results of GHG flux monitoring (CO2) are presented in relation to soil moisture as a result of precipitation simulations by water applications on selected microcosms (from agricultural crops and abandoned land). The laboratory results are also compared with field measurements from the same parcels, realised in a period with similar precipitation quantities and temperatures. The presented results constitute the starting point for the laboratory tests on soils, verified by field data, with the aim of establishing the most suitable intervals of parameters for performant land use and carbon removal.

Abstract

The integration of monitoring systems in beekeeping has significant implications for the health and sustainability of honeybee colonies. These advanced systems, which include sensors for temperature, humidity, hive weight, and sound analysis, allow for real-time tracking of hive conditions, enabling beekeepers to respond promptly to potential threats such as disease, pests, or environmental stressors. Research shows that such technology can lead to improved colony management, reducing the incidence of colony collapse disorder (CCD) by facilitating early intervention. Additionally, continuous data collection helps in identifying patterns and anomalies in hive behavior, contributing to a better understanding of bee biology and environmental interactions. However, the effectiveness of these systems depends on the accuracy of the data collected and the beekeeper’s ability to interpret and act upon this information. Moreover, while monitoring systems have the potential to enhance colony health, there are concerns about the cost, accessibility, and the need for technical expertise, which could limit widespread adoption among smallscale beekeepers. Overall, the use of monitoring systems in beehives represents a promising tool for enhancing bee colony health, though its success will rely on overcoming the challenges of implementation and ensuring that beekeepers can utilize the data effectively to support their colonies.

Abstract

Historical migration routes for anadromous sturgeons in the Danube River have been interrupted by transversal structures for hydropower use, from which the Iron Gates hydropower system represents the first significant barrier upstream Danube from the Black Sea. For the implementation of DALIA project, funded by Horizon Europe, the National Institute for Research and Development in Environmental Protection Bucharest (INCDPM) carries out research and innovation activities that aim to provide a sustainable solution for ultrasonic tagged sturgeons to by-pass upstream and downstream the hydropower dams. The spatial and temporal parameters recorded during April 2024 for the behavior of 7 male and 2 female ultrasonic tagged sturgeon specimens was analyzed and incorporated in a decisional matrix that provided the value 4 to 1 for the male to female ratio. This result is taken into account in the design for the by-pass solutions to be implemented for the dams that will provide the restoration of the historical multisecular migration route for ultrasonic tagged sturgeon species.

Abstract

The three wild anadromous sturgeon species currently present in the Black Sea and Lower Danube are in a critically endangered state. Their population has been consistently declining due to a combination of various factors, both caused by human activity and natural phenomena. These factors include unsustainable exploitation and poaching, hydro-technical projects aimed at improving navigation, water management, and energy production, pollution of essential habitats, and climate change. The EU Green Taxonomy is an essential framework that facilitates collaboration between researchers, communities, and the government to protect natural ecosystems and conserve biodiversity while promoting a sustainable and balanced socioeconomic environment. INCDPM Bucharest has developed a research agenda for environmental protection and biodiversity conservation based on the six main principles of the Green Taxonomy. This agenda focuses on 7 core themes that address the highest priorities in these areas and provide future scientific directions to achieve these goals.

Abstract

The impact of armed conflicts can be direct and indirect, highlighted by population displacement and casualties, infrastructure destruction, together with social and economic hiatus, but also the movement of air, water and soil pollutants across regional and national borders. There are numerous possible contamination sources of the water bodies and aquatic ecosystems that may appear during armed conflicts, including projectile composition, use of chemical weapons, discharge of untreated wastewater due to damage to sewage lines or wastewater treatment plants, unregulated waste management (improper disposal of industrial, hospital and municipal waste), oil spills, and deliberate poisoning of water resources. Thus, a comprehensive study from a multidisciplinary perspective of the armed conflicts is a sine qua non condition. In accordance, to properly assess the effects of pollution in the study area (Black Sea and coastal area) and to establish further strategies that can hinder the impact, water samples from various points of interest were analyzed to determine the water quality of the aquatic ecosystem and to possibly identify contaminants in the analyzed water bodies. Higher concentration values were observed for Pb in MB3 (27.9 μg/L) and Zn in MB1 (232 μg/L) and MB2 (53.1 μg/L), exceeding the maximum concentration limits set by the national legislation (10 μg/L for Pb and 50 μg/L for Zn).

Abstract

Aquatic ecosystems face increasing contamination from plastic pollutants, with Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) being one of the most prevalent. This study investigates the impact of ingested PVC powder particles on the body weight and length of O. niloticus (Nile tilapia), a commercially important fish species and a common inhabitant of freshwater systems worldwide. Groups of Nile tilapia specimens were subjected to different amounts of PVC powder particles, specifically 500 ppm and 1000 ppm. Specimens and water parameters were meticulously observed for 40 days. The control groups were provided with a diet that did not contain any PVC. After exposure, body weight and length were measured every two weeks and compared between the experimental and control groups. Preliminary results suggest a significant correlation between PVC ingestion and alterations in the growth parameters of Nile tilapia. Fish exposed to higher concentrations of PVC exhibited reduced body weight and length compared to the control groups. These findings indicate a potential negative impact of PVC pollution on the growth and development of aquatic organisms, highlighting the urgent need for effective strategies to mitigate plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract

Within the 9th European Framework programme, since 2021 EUROfusion is operating five tokamaks under the auspices of a single Task Force called ‘Tokamak Exploitation’. The goal is to benefit from the complementary capabilities of each machine in a coordinated way and help in developing a scientific output scalable to future largre machines. The programme of this Task Force ensures that ASDEX Upgrade, MAST-U, TCV, WEST and JET (since 2022) work together to achieve the objectives of Missions 1 and 2 of the EUROfusion Roadmap: i) demonstrate plasma scenarios that increase the success margin of ITER and satisfy the requirements of DEMO and, ii) demonstrate an integrated approach that can handle the large power leaving ITER and DEMO plasmas. The Tokamak Exploitation task force has therefore organized experiments on these two missions with the goal to strengthen the physics and operational basis for the ITER baseline scenario and for exploiting the recent plasma exhaust enhancements in all four devices (PEX: Plasma EXhaust) for exploring the solution for handling heat and particle exhaust in ITER and develop the conceptual solutions for DEMO. The ITER Baseline scenario has been developed in a similar way in ASDEX Upgrade, TCV and JET. Key risks for ITER such as disruptions and run-aways have been also investigated in TCV, ASDEX Upgrade and JET. Experiments have explored successfully different divertor configurations (standard, super-X, snowflakes) in MAST-U and TCV and studied tungsten melting in WEST and ASDEX Upgrade. The input from the smaller devices to JET has also been proven successful to set-up novel control schemes on disruption avoidance and detachment.

This second major JET D–T campaign (DTE2), after DTE1 in 1997, represented the culmination of a series of JET enhancements—new fusion diagnostics, new T injection capabilities, refurbishment of the T plant, increased auxiliary heating, in-vessel calibration of 14 MeV neutron yield monitors—as well as significant advances in plasma theory and modelling in the fusion community. DTE2 was complemented by a sequence of isotope physics campaigns encompassing operation in pure tritium at high T-NBI power. Carefully conducted for safe operation with tritium, the new T and D–T experiments used 1 kg of T (vs 100 g in DTE1), yielding the most fusion reactor relevant D–T plasmas to date and expanding our understanding of isotopes and D–T mixture physics. Furthermore, since the JET T and DTE2 campaigns occurred almost 25 years after the last major D–T tokamak experiment, it was also a strategic goal of the European fusion programme to refresh operational experience of a nuclear tokamak to prepare staff for ITER operation. The key physics results of the JET T and DTE2 experiments, carried out within the EUROfusion JET1 work package, are reported in this paper. Progress in the technological exploitation of JET D–T operations, development and validation of nuclear codes, neutronic tools and techniques for ITER operations carried out by EUROfusion (started within the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme and continuing under the Horizon Europe FP) are reported in (Litaudon et al Nucl. Fusion accepted), while JET experience on T and D–T operations is presented in (King et al Nucl. Fusion submitted).

Abstract

The pre-thermal quench (pre-TQ) dynamics of a pure deuterium ( $\mathrm{D}_2$ ) shattered pellet injection (SPI) into a $3\,\mathrm{MA}$ / $7\,\mathrm{MJ}$ JET H-mode plasma is studied via 3D non-linear MHD modelling with the JOREK code. The interpretative modelling captures the overall evolution of the measured density and radiated power. The simulations also identify the importance of the drifts of ablation plasmoids towards the tokamak low field side (LFS) and the impurities in the background plasma in fragment penetration, assimilation, radiative cooling and MHD activity in $\mathrm{D}_2$ SPI experiments. It is found that plasmoid drifts lead to an about 70% reduction of the central line-integrated density (compared to a simulation without drifts) in the JET $\mathrm{D}_2$ SPI discharge considered. Impurities that pre-exist before the SPI as well as those from possible impurity influxes related to the SPI are shown to dominate the radiation in the considered discharge. With inputs from JOREK simulations, modelling with the Lagrangian particle-based pellet code PELOTON reproduces the deviation of the SPI fragments in the direction of the major radius as observed by the fast camera. This confirms the role of rocket effects and plasmoid drifts in the considered discharge and reinforces the validity of the JOREK modelling. The limited core density rise due to plasmoid drifts and the strong radiative cooling and MHD activity with impurities (depending on their species and concentration) could limit the effectiveness of LFS $\mathrm{D}_2$ SPI in runaway electron avoidance and are worth considering in the design of the ITER disruption mitigation system.
