Resumo O objetivo deste texto é compreender a vulnerabilidade de gênero experienciada pelas mulheres que vivem com HIV/Síndrome de Imunodeficiência Adquirida (SIDA) na Cidade de Maputo, Moçambique, através dos relatos de representantes e lideranças dos serviços de saúde que atuam diretamente sobre as questões dessas condições para o público feminino. Para isso, a pesquisa se embasou em metodologias qualitativas, visto que a produção dos dados foi respaldada por um roteiro semiestruturado que considera os seguintes temas: HIV/SIDA; gênero; cultura; e serviços de saúde. As interpretações são mediadas pela Análise do Discurso (AD), que possibilita a imersão nos recursos linguísticos por meio dos sentidos e conexões. Isso permite a interpretação da complexidade do contexto geográfico das mulheres que vivem com HIV/SIDA na região, evidenciando a necessidade de se empenhar mais ações voltadas às questões das doenças, uma vez que se faz premente estabelecer uma interpretação geográfica da saúde, sobretudo, no que diz respeito à realidade vivida pelas que experienciam dificuldades, opressões, estigmas e discriminações no cotidiano.

Phytochemical investigation of hexanic extract of leaves of Rollinia laurifolia afforded three known acetogenins, uvariamicin-I (1), solamin(2) and gonionenin(3), for the first time isolated from Rollinia genus. The structures of 1, 2 and 3 were elucidated by spectroscopic methods.

Kaurenoic acid, a kauranic diterpenoid, presents in vitro activity against trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi, showing, however, lytic activity on blood erythrocytes, as a side effect. The syntheses of twelve new derivatives of kaurenoic acid, four amides, four amines (and three hydroclorides) and four oximes, was carried out aiming at the improvement of the therapeutic activity and without the side effect. Among the derivatives prepared, one compound showed enhanced trypanocidal activity in vitro towards Trypanosoma cruzi trypomastigote erythrocytic forms, when compared to kaurenoic acid, but continued to show discrete lytic activity on erythrocytes; another compound showed a level of activity similar to that of kaurenoic acid, but without lysis.

Background: Parasitic weeds are widespread and cause significant losses in important crops. Their germination requires the detection of crop-derived molecules such as strigolactones. Strigolactone mimics are germination-inducing molecules with the potential to apply a suicidal germination strategy for seed bank control of parasitic weeds., Results: The D-ring, which is instrumental in the germination process of seeds of parasitic weeds, was attached to gibberellin (GA 3 ) and kaurenoic acid as the scaffold. It was shown that indeed strigolactone mimics prepared from GA 3 and kaurenoic acid are active as stimulants when a D-ring is present; some of the mimics are as active as GR24., Conclusions: The starting molecules were plant hormones that had previous growth-regulating activity in other organisms and the products showed enhanced activity towards parasitic weeds. The information generated may contribute to a better understanding of the germination biochemistry of the weed species used. Research has been conducted on the biotransformation of (8S,9R)-isocaryolan-9-ol (4a) and (1S,2S,5R,8S)-8-methylene-1,4,4-trimethyltricyclo[6.2.1.0(2,5)]undecan-12-ol (5a) by the fungal phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea. The biotransformation of compound 4a yielded compounds 6-9, while the biotransformation of compound 5a yielded compounds 10-13. The activity of compounds 4a and 5a against B. cinerea has been evaluated. (8R,9R)-Isocaryolane-8,9-diol (6), a major metabolite of compound 4a, shows activity compared to its parent compound 4a, which is inactive. The effect of isocaryolanes 3, 4a, and 5a, together with their biotransformation products 6-8, 10, and 14-17, on the germination and radicle and shoot growth of Lactuca sativa (lettuce) has also been determined. Compounds 7-13 are described for the first time.

Introduction: Fatty acids are abundant in vegetable oils. They are known to have antibacterial and antifungal properties., Methods: Antifungal susceptibility was evaluated by broth microdilution assay following CLSI (formerly the NCCLS) guidelines against 16 fungal strains of clinical interest., Results: In this work, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) was able to inhibit 12 clinical strains of the pathogenic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and were also active in the bioautographic assay against Cladosporium sphaerospermum., Conclusions: FAME was a more potent antifungal than trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole against P. brasiliensis under the experimental conditions tested.

Auxins, such as indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), are important in plant germination and growth, while physiological polyamines, such as putrescine, are involved in cell proliferation and differentiation, and their concentrations increase during germination. In this work, novel indole amides were synthesized in good yields by monoacylation of morpholine and unprotected symmetrical diamines with indole-3-carboxylic acid, a putative metabolite of IAA, possessing no auxin-like activity. These amides were tested for their effects on seed germination and growth of the radicles and shoots of Lactuca sativa (lettuce) and Allium cepa (onion) seedlings, at 100.0, 1.0, and 0.01 microM concentrations. Germination was generally stimulated, with the exception of amide 3, derived from morpholine, at 100 microM. On radicle and shoot growth, the effect of these compounds was predominantly inhibitory. Compound 3 was the best inhibitor of growth of lettuce and onion, at the highest concentration. Amides, such as propanil, among others, are described as having herbicidal activity.

The metabolism of the fungistatic agent (8R,9R)-8-methoxyisocaryolan-9-ol (4) by the fungus Botrytis cinerea has been investigated. Biotransformation of compound 4 yielded compounds 5 and 6-9. No dihydrobotrydial is observed after 4 days of incubation of compound 4. Separate biotransformation of (8R,9R)-isocaryolane-8,9-diol (5) yielded compounds 7-11. The evaluation of the fungistatic activity against B. cinerea of compounds 4, 5, and 6 is reported. (4R,8R,9R)-8-Methoxyisocaryolane-9,15-diol (6), a major metabolite of (8R,9R)-8-methoxyisocaryolan-9-ol (4), shows a much reduced biological activity when compared with the parent compound. Isocaryolane derivatives 6-11 are described for the first time.

A new product of biotransformation of ent-16-oxo-17-norkauran-19-oic acid (1) by Fusarium proliferatum was isolated and identified as a 2beta-hydroxy derivative (2). The structure of 2 was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data interpretation and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The allelopathic activity of compound 2 was evaluated on the growth of radicals and shoots of Lactuca sativa (lettuce). This is the first time that fungal hydroxylation at position C-2 has been reported on an ent-kaurane diterpene skeleton.

Two new adjacent bis-THF annonaceous acetogenins, 9-hydroxyfolianin (1) and folianin B (2), together with two known acetogenins, asimicin (3) and bullatacin (4), significantly bioactives in brine shrimp lethality test, were isolated from seeds of Annona cornifolia A. St. Hil (Annonaceae). Their structures were elucidated by NMR and ESI-MS analysis, and relative configurations were established. The absolute configuration around the THF rings of 1 was defined by Mosher esters methodology and circular dichroism.

Novel kaurane ditepene monoamides were synthesized in good yields directly from kaurenoic ( 1) and grandiflorenic ( 2) acids and unprotected symmetrical diamines, using a modified protocol for monoacylation. Amides from 1 and 2 and monoamines were also obtained and tested against seed germination and growth of radicle and shoot of Lactuca sativa (lettuce), at 10 (-3), 10 (-5), and 10 (-7) M. Amides from symmetrical diamines showed significant inhibitory activity at higher concentrations.

A highly rearranged novel dilactone was the single product isolated from Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of a norketone prepared from grandiflorenic acid, a natural kaurane diterpene. The complete 1H and 13C NMR assignment is presented for this novel compound that showed discrete in vitro antibacterial activity., (Copyright 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Sixteen extracts, obtained from eight Brazilian plants of Annonaceae family, were screened for their antibacterial activity: Xylopia frutescens, X. aromatica, X. amazonica, X. benthamii, Annona ambotay, A. crassiflora, A. muricata and A. cherimolia. Amongst the investigated extracts, six showed antibacterial activity against at least one of the tested organisms at the concentration of 100 microg/mL. The most active extracts were those prepared from X. frutescens, X. amazonica, and A. ambotay. A phytochemical screening showed the presence of anonaceus acetogenins in some active extracts. Eleven diterpenoids were also tested for comparison purposes. Six were natural products, previously isolated from Xylopia sp. (kaurenoic, frutoic, xylopic, 15beta-hydroxy-kaurenoic and trachylobanic acids plus kaurenol) and five were derivatives of such compounds, obtained by esterification or reduction reactions. Trachylobanic acid showed antibacterial activity against B. subtilis and S. aureus.

Kaurenoic and grandiflorenic acid, isolated from Wedelia paludosa (Asteraceae), some derivatives from these acids (alcohols, esters, amides, lactones, oximes) and other naturally occurring kaurane diterpenes were tested for their action on the growth of radical and shoot of Lactuca sativa. Gibberellic acid, GA3, a commercially available phytohormone, belonging to the same class of diterpenes, was also tested. Some of the tested substances showed a remarkable activity either in the inhibition or in stimulation of L. sativa growth. The activity, in some cases, was even higher than that of GA3.

Eighteen different extracts from five Annona species collected in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, were submitted to the brine shrimp lethality test in order to detect potential sources of novel cytotoxic, antitumor, pesticidal and anti-Trypanosoma cruzi compounds. All of the Annonaceous species tested showed good larvicidal activity as compared to a reference compounds and literature data.

In the search for new routes in the synthesis of hydroxylated kaurane diterpenoids, Verticillium lecanii, grown in a mineral liquid medium for 48 h, was fed with ent-17,19-dihydroxy-16betaH-kaurane, obtained by hydroboration/oxidation of kaurenoic acid, a natural product easily isolated from plants of the genera Xylopia (Annonaceae) and Wedelia (Asteraceae). After 14 days, the culture medium was extracted with ethyl acetate, and the metabolites were purified by column chromatography on silica gel. The results show that V. lecanii biotransformed the starting material into three novel compounds: ent-11alpha,17,19-trihydroxy-16betaH-kaurane; ent-7alpha,17,19-trihydroxy-16betaH-kaurane; and ent-7beta,17,19-trihydroxy-16betaH-kaurane, the structures of which were fully elucidated by using classical and modern two-dimensional NMR techniques.

Tetrachyrin (1), 3alpha-tigloyloxykaur-16-en-19-oic acid (2) and 3alpha-cinnamoyloxykaur-16-en-19-oic acid (3) have been isolated from the ethanol extract of Wedelia paludosa aerial parts.

Methyl ent-17-hydroxy-16beta-kauran-19-oate was fed to a 2-day-old culture of the fungus Rhizopus stolonifer, fermenting at room temperature (25 degrees C) in an orbital shaker (21). After 11 days, both broth and mycelia were extracted with ethyl acetate. Two novel compounds were isolated from this experiment: methyl ent-9alpha,17-dihydroxy-16beta-kauran-19-oate and methyl ent-7alpha,17-dihydroxy-16beta-kauran-19-oate. Their structures were fully confirmed by spectroscopic methods.

Microbial transformation of ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid was carried out with R. stolonifer. After seven days of incubation, two metabolites, ent-7 alpha-hydroxy-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid and ent-12 beta-hydroxy-kaur-9(11),16-dien-19-oic acid, were isolated as a result of hydroxylation and hydroxylation/dehydrogenation, respectively. Incubation for 15 days also afforded ent-16 beta,17-dihydroxy-kauran-19-oic acid. The metabolites were identified by spectroscopic methods.

Grossamide, and N-trans-caffeoyltyramine, were isolated for the first time from the seeds of Annona crassiflora Mart, and in the Annonaceae family.

ent-19-Hydroxykaur-16-en-15-one is transformed to ent-3 beta,16 beta,19-trihydroxykauran-15-one by Cephalosporium aphidicola. The structure of this metabolite was established by X-ray crystallography.
