IntroductionAlzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by cerebral cortex atrophy. In this study, we used sparse canonical correlation analysis (SCCA) to identify associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and cortical thickness in the Korean population. We also investigated the role of the SNPs in neurological outcomes, including neurodegeneration and cognitive dysfunction.MethodsWe recruited 1125 Korean participants who underwent neuropsychological testing, brain magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and microarray genotyping. We performed group-wise SCCA in Aβ negative (−) and Aβ positive (+) groups. In addition, we performed mediation, expression quantitative trait loci, and pathway analyses to determine the functional role of the SNPs.ResultsWe identified SNPs related to cortical thickness using SCCA in Aβ negative and positive groups and identified SNPs that improve the prediction performance of cognitive impairments. Among them, rs9270580 was associated with cortical thickness by mediating Aβ uptake, and three SNPs (rs2271920, rs6859, rs9270580) were associated with the regulation of CHRNA2, NECTIN2, and HLA genes.ConclusionOur findings suggest that SNPs potentially contribute to cortical thickness in AD, which in turn leads to worse clinical outcomes. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the genetic architecture underlying cortical atrophy and its relationship with AD.

Abstract Plastic pollution is becoming a significant problem in urban areas due to excessive use and careless disposal. While studies on microplastics are increasingly being conducted across various environments, research on microplastics in soil is limited compared to other areas. Microplastics entering the soil through various routes can stay there for a long period of time, threatening soil organisms and eventually humans. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the distribution characteristics of microplastics according to types of land use. For this purpose, a total of 54 soil samples were collected from agricultural land, residential areas, roadsides, parks, and forests. The analysis of microplastics in the soil by stereo microscopy showed that the average numbers of microplastics (particles/kg) in agricultural land, residential areas, roadsides, parks, and forests were 5047, 3646, 4987, 2673, and 1097, respectively. Various colors (black, red, green, blue, yellow, white, and transparent) and shapes (fragment, fiber, film, and sphere) of microplastics were found in soils. The combination of black x fragment plastics showed the highest frequency. Microplastics in soil samples from agricultural land, roadside, and residential areas with sizes between 20 µm and 500 µm were determined using Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) and analyzed by MP finder. The number of microplastics detected in the soil with sizes ranging between 20 µm and 500 µm was in the order of roadside > residential areas > agricultural land, which was different from the results by stereomicroscopy. Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were detected in soils from roadsides. Polyurethane (PU), cellulose acetate (CA), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), PP, and polystyrene (PS) were detected in soils from residential areas, with PU being the most frequently detected.

PURPOSE Exercise can reduce postprandial hyperglycemia by increasing contraction-mediated glucose uptake in skeletal muscles. However, postprandial exercise does not always have similar effects in all patients. This study aimed to analyze the factors influencing glucose response to exercise following oral glucose load. METHODS We enrolled 169 adults with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT, n=64) and type 2 diabetes (T2D, n=105). We measured fingertip capillary blood glucose level at 30-minute intervals over 2-hour after the 75-g oral glucose ingestion. In addition, a single bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise was conducted at 30 minutes after 75-g oral glucose ingestion. We also measured glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), β-cell function (HOMA-β), physical activity level questionnaire and anthropometrics. ABSTRACTAn immortalized neural cell line derived from the human ventral mesencephalon, called ReNCell, and its MeCP2 knock out were used. With it, we characterized the chromatin compositional transitions undergone during differentiation, with special emphasis on linker histones. While the WT cells displayed the development of dendrites and axons the KO cells did not, despite undergoing differentiation as monitored by NeuN. ReNCell expressed minimal amounts of histone H1.0 and their linker histone complement consisted mainly of histone H1.2, H1.4 and H1.5. The overall level of histone H1 exhibited a trend to increase during the differentiation of MeCP2 KO cells. The phosphorylation levels of histone H1 proteins decreased dramatically during ReNCell’s cell differentiation independently of the presence of MeCP2. Immunofluorescence analysis showed that MeCP2 exhibits an extensive co-localization with linker histones. Interestingly, the average size of the nucleus decreased during differentiation but in the MeCP2 KO cells, the smaller size of the nuclei at the start of differentiation increased by almost 40% after differentiation by 8 days (8 DIV). Amyloid-beta (Aβ) is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). We aimed to identify genes related to Aβ uptake in the Korean population and investigate the effects of these novel genes on clinical outcomes, including neurodegeneration and cognitive impairments. We recruited a total of 759 Korean participants who underwent neuropsychological tests, brain magnetic resonance imaging, 18F-flutemetamol positron emission tomography, and microarray genotyping data. We performed gene-based association analysis, and also performed expression quantitative trait loci and network analysis. In genome-wide association studies, no single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) passed the genome-wide significance threshold. In gene-based association analysis, six genes (LCMT1, SCRN2, LRRC46, MRPL10, SP6, and OSBPL7) were significantly associated with Aβ standardised uptake value ratio in the brain. The three most significant SNPs (rs4787307, rs9903904, and rs11079797) on these genes are associated with the regulation of the LCMT1, OSBPL7, and SCRN2 genes, respectively. These SNPs are involved in decreasing hippocampal volume and cognitive scores by mediating Aβ uptake. The 19 enriched gene sets identified by pathway analysis included axon and chemokine activity. Our findings suggest novel susceptibility genes associated with the uptake of Aβ, which in turn leads to worse clinical outcomes. Our findings might lead to the discovery of new AD treatment targets.

Metallic-phase transition metal dichalcogenide quantum dots (TMDs-mQDs) have been reported in recent years. However, a dominant mechanism for modulating their intrinsic exciton behaviors has not been determined yet as their size is close to the Bohr radius. Herein, we demonstrate that the oxidation effect prevails over quantum confinement on metallic-phase tungsten dichalcogenide QDs (WX2-mQDs; X = S, Se) when the QD size becomes larger than the exciton Bohr radius. WX2-mQDs with a diameter of ~12 nm show an obvious change in their photophysical properties when the pH of the solution changes from 2 to 11 compared to changing the size from ~3 nm. Meanwhile, we found that quantum confinement is the dominant function for the optical spectroscopic results in the WX2-mQDs with a size of ~3 nm. This is because the oxidation of the larger WX2-mQDs induces sub-energy states, thus enabling excitons to migrate into the lower defect energy states, whereas in WX2-mQDs with a size comparable to the exciton Bohr radius, protonation enhances the quantum confinement.

Abstract Background Accumulating evidence suggests that BMI1 confers protective effects against Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, the mechanism remains elusive. Based on recent pathophysiological evidence, we sought for the first time to identify genetic variants in BMI1 as associated with AD biomarkers, including amyloid-β. Methods We used genetic, longitudinal cognition, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarker data from participants in the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) cohort (N = 1565). First, we performed a gene-based association analysis of common single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) (minor allele frequency (MAF) > 5%) located within ± 20 kb of the gene boundary of BMI1, an optimal width for including potential regulatory SNPs in the 5′ and 3′ untranslated regions (UTR) of BMI1, with CSF Aβ1-42 levels. Second, we performed cross-sectional and longitudinal association analyses of SNPs in BMI1 with cognitive performance using linear and mixed-effects models. We replicated association of SNPs in BMI1 with cognitive performance in an independent cohort (N=1084), Religious Orders Study and the Rush Memory and Aging Project (ROS/MAP). Results Gene-based genetic association analysis showed that BMI1 was significantly associated with CSF Aβ1-42 levels after adjusting for multiple testing using permutation (permutation-corrected p value=0.005). rs17415557 in BMI1 showed the most significant association with CSF Aβ1-42 levels. Participants with minor alleles of rs17415557 have increased CSF Aβ1-42 levels compared to those with no minor alleles. Further analysis identified and replicated the minor allele of rs17415557 as being significantly associated with slower cognitive decline rates in AD. Conclusions Our findings provide fundamental evidence that BMI1 rs17415557 may serve as a protective mechanism related to AD pathogenesis, which supports the results of previous studies linking BMI1 to protection against AD.

Abstract Ultrathin film-based transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) with a broad work function (WF) tunability are highly demanded for efficient energy conversion devices. However, reducing the film thickness below 50 nm is limited due to rapidly increasing resistance; furthermore, introducing dopants into TCOs such as indium tin oxide (ITO) to reduce the resistance decreases the transparency due to a trade-off between the two quantities. Herein, we demonstrate dopant-tunable ultrathin (≤ 50 nm) TCOs fabricated via electric field-driven metal implantation (m-TCOs; m = Ni, Ag, and Cu) without compromising their innate electrical and optical properties. The m-TCOs exhibit a broad WF variation (0.97 eV), high transmittance in the UV to visible range (89–93% at 365 nm), and low sheet resistance (30–60 Ω cm−2). Experimental and theoretical analyses show that interstitial metal atoms mainly affect the change in the WF without substantial losses in optical transparency. The m-ITOs are employed as anode or cathode electrodes for organic light-emitting diodes (LEDs), inorganic UV LEDs, and organic photovoltaics for their universal use, leading to outstanding performances, even without hole injection layer for OLED through the WF-tailored Ni-ITO. These results verify the proposed m-TCOs enable effective carrier transport and light extraction beyond the limits of traditional TCOs.

This paper was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to identify risk factors associated with bumps in the prevention of fatalities and accidents in highly stressed, bump-prone ground conditions. Changes of failure mechanism with increasing confinement, from extensional-to shear-dominated failure, are widely observed in the rupture of intact specimens at the laboratory scale and in rock masses. In the previous analysis conducted in 2018, both unconfined and triaxial compressive tests were conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of some specimens of a Utah coal, including the spalling limits, the ratio of apparent unconfined compressive strength (AUCS) to unconfined compressive strength (UCS), the damage characteristics, and the post-yield dilatancy. These mechanical characteristics were found to be strongly anisotropic as a function of the orientation of the cleats relative to the loading direction. However, the transition from extensional to shear failure at the given confinements was not clearly identified. In this study, a total of 20 specimens were additionally prepared from the same coal sample used in the previous study and then tested under both unconfined and triaxial compressive conditions. The different confining stresses are used as analogs for different width-to-height (W/H) ratios of pillar strength. Although the W/H ratios of the specimens were not directly considered during testing, the equivalent W/H ratios of a pillar as a function of the confining stresses were estimated using an existing empirical solution. According to this relationship, the W/H at which in-situ pillar behavior would be expected to transition from brittle to ductile is identified.

Abstract This study aimed to elaborate upon prior findings suggestive of the altered lateralization of structural connectivity in the developing preterm brain by using diffusion tensor imaging tractography to explore how network topological asymmetries in fronto-limbic neural circuitry are altered at 36–41 weeks, postmenstrual age in 64 preterm infants without severe brain injury and 33 term-born infants. We compared the pattern of structural connectivity and network lateralization of the betweenness centrality in the medial fronto-orbital gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, amygdala, and hippocampus—the structures comprising the fronto-limbic brain circuit—between preterm and term infants. Global efficiency, local efficiency, and small-world characteristics did not differ significantly between the two hemispheres in term-born infants, suggesting that integration and segregation are balanced between the left and right hemispheres. However, the preterm brain showed significantly greater leftward lateralization of small-worldness (P = 0.033); the lateralization index of the betweenness centrality revealed that the medial fronto-orbital gyrus (P = 0.008), superior temporal gyrus (P = 0.031), and hippocampus (P = 0.028) showed significantly increased leftward asymmetry in preterm infants relative to term-infants independent of sex, age at imaging, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia. The altered lateralization of fronto-limbic brain circuitry might be involved in the early development of social–emotional disorders in preterm infants.

A total of four different included angles were used in the work performed in 2018. The authors found that the degree of anisotropic strength differed according to the included angle. However, the transition from extensional to shear failure at the given confinements was not clearly identified. In this study, a total of 20 specimens were additionally prepared from the same coal sample used in the previous study and then tested under both unconfined and triaxial compressive conditions. Because the authors already knew the most contrasting cases of the included angles from the previous work using the four included angles, they chose only two of the included angles (0° and 30°) for this study. For the triaxial compressive tests, a greater confining stress than the mean UCS was applied to the specimens in an attempt to identify the brittle-ductile transition of the coal. The new results have been compiled with the previous results in order to re-evaluate the confinement-dependency of the coal behavior. Additionally, the different confining stresses are used as analogs for different width-to-height (W/H) conditions of pillar strength. Although the W/H ratios of the specimens were not directly considered during testing, the equivalent W/H ratios of a pillar as a function of the confining stresses were estimated using an existing empirical solution. According to this relationship, the W/H at which in situ pillar behavior would be expected to transition from brittle to ductile is identified.

Although sound source localization is a desirable technique in many communication systems and intelligence applications, the distortion caused by diffuse noise or reverberation makes the time delay estimation (TDE) between signals acquired by a pair of microphones a complicated and challenging problem. In this paper, we describe a method that can efficiently achieve sound source localization in noisy and reverberant environments. This method is based on the generalized cross-correlation (GCC) function with phase transform (PHAT) weights (GCC-PHAT) to achieve robustness against reverberation. In addition, to estimate the time delay robust to diffuse components and to further improve the robustness of the GCC-PHAT against reverberation, time-frequency(t-f) components of observations directly emitted by a point source are chosen by “inversed” diffuseness. The diffuseness that can be estimated from the coherent-to-diffuse power ratio (CDR) based on spatial coherence between two microphones represents the contribution of diffuse components on a scale of zero to one with direct sounds from a source modeled to be fully coherent. In particular, the “inversed” diffuseness is binarized with a very rigorous threshold to select highly reliable components for accurate TDE even in noisy and reverberant environments. Experimental results for both simulated and real-recorded data consistently demonstrated the robustness of the presented method against diffuse noise and reverberation.

Long-term application of soil organic amendments (SOA) can improve the formation of soil organic carbon (SOC) pool as well as soil fertility and health of paddy lands. However, the effects of SOA may vary with the input amount and its characteristics. In this work, a descriptive field research was conducted during one cropping season to investigate the responses of various SOC fractions to different long-term fertilization practices in rice fields and their relationships with soil biogeochemical properties and the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG). The field sites included two conventional paddies applied with chemical fertilizer (CF) or CF + rice straw (RS) and six organic agriculture paddies applied with oilseed cake manure (OCM) + wheat straw (WS), cow manure (CM) + WS, or CM + RS. The two paddy soils treated with CM + RS had significantly higher concentrations of recalcitrant to labile C forms, such as loss-on-ignition C (LOIC; 56–73 g kg−1), Walkley–Black C (WBC; 20–25 g kg−1), permanganate oxidizable C (POXC; 835–853 mg kg−1), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC; 133–141 mg kg−1), than soils treated with other SOA. Likewise, long-term application of CM + RS seemed to be the best for regulating soil fertility parameters, such as ammonium (11–141 mg kg−1); phosphate (61–106 mg kg−1); and soluble Ca, K, and Mg (7–10, 0.5–1.2, and 1.9–3.8 mg kg−1, respectively), although the results varied with the location and soil properties of rice fields. Additionally, the two paddy sites had the largest cumulative methane emission (754–762 kg ha−1), seemingly attributed to increased microbial biomass and labile C fractions. The significant correlations of most SOC fractions with soil microbial biomass, trophic factors, and methane emissions were confirmed with multivariate data analysis. It was also possible to infer that long-term SOA application, especially with CM + RS, enhanced interaction in belowground paddy fields, contributing to soil fertility and rice production sustainability. Based on our findings, we suggest the need for analysis of various types of SOC fractions to efficiently manage soil fertility and quality of paddy fields, C sequestration, and GHG emissions.

While faults are commonly simulated as a single planar or non-planar interface for a safety or stability analysis in underground mining excavation, the real 3D structure of a fault is often very complex, with different branches that reactivate at different times. Furthermore, these branches are zones of non-zero thickness where material continuously undergoes damage even during interseismic periods. In this study, the initiation and the initial evolution of a strike-slip fault was modeled using the FLAC3D software program. The initial and boundary conditions are simplified, and mimic the Riedel shear experiment and the constitutive model in the literature. The FLAC3D model successfully replicates and creates the 3D fault zone as a strike-slip type structure in the entire thickness of the model. The strike-slip fault structure and normal displacement result in the formation of valleys in the model. Three panels of a longwall excavation are virtually placed and excavated beneath a main valley. The characteristics of stored and dissipated energy associated with the panel excavations are examined and observed at different stages of shear strain in the fault to evaluate bump potential. Depending on the shear strain in the fault, the energy characteristics adjacent to the longwall panels present different degrees of bump potential, which is not possible to capture by conventional fault simulation using an interface. Some intensive farmers tend to expect short-term beneficial effects by applying soil amendments, but inconsistent fertilization practices are often conducted, causing economic losses and environmental problems. This study aimed at investigating the short-term application effects of different soil amendments on soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions, biogeochemical properties, and crop performance for finding the best land management approach using one-year field trial growing Chinese cabbages. This filed experiment was conducted in 2020 and included eight fertilizer treatments: control (w/o fertilizers), chemical fertilizer (CF), manure compost (MC), double MC amount (2MC), CF + MC, CF + rice husk (RH), MC + RH, and CF + MC + RH. As a result, the concentrations of recalcitrant to labile C forms, including Loss-On-Ignition C (LOIC), Walkley-Black C, permanganate oxidizable C (POXC), and microbial biomass C, were the highest in a mixture of MC and RH and 2MC. Additionally, the treatment with the largest difference from the control in key soil parameters was 2MC: bulk density (10%), total N (30%), available P (186%), and CO2 (433%) and N2O (825%) emissions, followed by MC + RH. Moreover, more than 20% higher fresh weight (FW) of cabbage was found in 2MC and MC + RH than in the control. Therefore, these two organic amendments appeared to benefit SOC storage and overall soil biogeochemical processes, contributing to higher biomass crop production. Moreover, LOIC significantly correlated to bulk density, available P and K, and FW, while POXC significantly correlated to N concentration in plants, indicating the short-term fertilization effects on the status of SOC fractions and the qualities of soil and plant by applying soil amendments. Overall, our findings suggest that applying MC + RH would be an alternative to replace the conventional farming practices for promoting soil quality and crop performance, but further studies to sustain the application effects of this amendment should be monitored for longer durations.

Demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) treated with gamma irradiation (GR) has shown promising results as an allograft without any adverse effects in in vivo and clinical studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of 15 and 25 kGy GR on the osteoinductive properties of DDM at extra-skeletal sites. As a control group, non-irradiated DDM powder was implanted into the right subcutaneous tissues of the dorsal thigh muscles of 20 nude mice. DDM powder irradiated with 15 and 25 kGy was implanted into the left side. After two and four weeks, the bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. After confirming osteoblast- and osteoclast-specific activities by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining, a histological analysis was performed to measure the new bone formation and the number of osteoblasts and osteoclast-like cells on the surface of the DDMs. Histomorphometry was used to calculate the new bone formation area on the surface of the DDM particles (DDMs). The BMD in all the groups increased from two and four weeks without statistically significant differences. The osteoblasts were dominantly activated on DDM without GR, and DDM treated with 25 kGy compared to DDM treated with 15 kGy. Among the groups, new bone formation was identified in all the groups at each time point. In conclusion, GR at doses of 15 and 25 kGy does not affect the osteoinductive properties of DDM powder.

The pathological hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta, where the dopaminergic neurons form five clusters called nigrosomes 1–5 (N1–N5). N1 is the largest and considered to be the most affected by PD, followed by N2, N4, N3, and N5. Recently, an MRI study suggested a sequential progression of loss from N1 to N4. As the extent of cortical thinning widens as PD progresses, we aimed to define cortical thinning patterns according to the differential involvement of N1 and N4 in PD patients. Cortical thickness was analyzed in 83 PD patients (29 with N1 loss on at least one side of the brain, but no N4 loss; and 54 with N4 loss on at least one side) and 35 healthy subjects with age, sex, disease duration, and intracranial volume as covariates. On patient-wise analysis, for areas with more cortical thinning than the controls, PD patients with N4 loss had wider cortical thinning involving more dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and temporal areas than PD patients with only N1 loss, but cortical thinning did not significantly differ between these two patient groups. However, cortical thinning was more apparent in hemisphere-level analysis with statistically significant clusters being found more in hemispheres with N4 loss than hemispheres with N1 loss in PD patients compared to normal hemispheres of the controls. Cortical thinning occurred in a similar propagation pattern to that seen with PD progression, supporting past hypotheses on the sequential progression of nigrosome loss from N1 to N4.

Background Length of hospitalization for patients with lower back pain sustained in road traffic accidents was assessed clinically. Methods In total, 170 patients with lower back pain injury sustained in road traffic accidents, were included in the study. They were divided into 2 groups: Group A with a shorter hospitalization period (1?7 days) and Group B with a longer hospitalization period (8?14 days). Each group was treated daily with traditional Korean medicine including: acupuncture, herbal acupuncture, herbal decoction medicine, and chuna treatment. To compare the treatment effects between the 2 groups, health-related quality of life, Oswestry disability index, and numeric rating scale were used. Statistical analysis between the 2 groups was assessed using Chi-square test, independent t test, and paired t test. Results After hospitalization, Group A and Group B both showed a significant increase in their health-related quality of life scores and significant decreases in Oswestry disability index and numeric rating scale scores. In addition, Group B, with a longer hospitalization period than Group A, showed a significant improvement over Group A in its health-related quality of life and numeric rating scale scores. Conclusions This study suggests that control of pain caused by lower back injury sustained in a road traffic accident, may be more effectively achieved in patients receiving 8-14 days of hospitalization and traditional Korean medicine treatment, compared to those receiving < 7 days of hospitalization treatment. In the future, more systematic and large-scale studies are needed to ascertain the effects of other variables.

Bumps and other types of dynamic failure have been a persistent, worldwide problem in the underground coal mining industry, spanning decades. For example, in just five states in the U.S. from 1983 to 2014, there were 388 reportable bumps. Despite significant advances in mine design tools and mining practices, these events continue to occur. Many conditions have been associated with bump potential, such as the presence of stiff units in the local geology. The effect of a stiff sandstone unit on the potential for coal bumps depends on the location of the stiff unit in the stratigraphic column, the relative stiffness and strength of other structural members, and stress concentrations caused by mining. This study describes the results of a robust design to consider the impact of different lithologic risk factors impacting dynamic failure risk. Because the inherent variability of stratigraphic characteristics in sedimentary formations, such as thickness, engineering material properties, and location, is significant and the number of influential parameters in determining a parametric study is large, it is impractical to consider every simulation case by varying each parameter individually. Therefore, to save time and honor the statistical distributions of the parameters, it is necessary to develop a robust design to collect sufficient sample data and develop a statistical analysis method to draw accurate conclusions from the collected data. In this study, orthogonal arrays, which were developed using the robust design, are used to define the combination of the (a) thickness of a stiff sandstone inserted on the top and bottom of a coal seam in a massive shale mine roof and floor, (b) location of the stiff sandstone inserted on the top and bottom of the coal seam, and (c) material properties of the stiff sandstone and contacts as interfaces using the 3-dimensional numerical model, FLAC3D. After completion of the numerical experiments, statistical and multivariate analysis are performed using the calculated results from the orthogonal arrays to analyze the effect of these variables. As a consequence, the impact of each of the parameters on the potential for bumps is quantitatively classified in terms of a normalized intensity of plastic dissipated energy. By multiple regression, the intensity of plastic dissipated energy and migration of the risk from the roof to the floor via the pillars is predicted based on the value of the variables. The results demonstrate and suggest a possible capability to predict the bump potential in a given rock mass adjacent to the underground excavations and pillars. We experimentally demonstrate the simultaneous enhancement of Raman and photoluminescence (PL) of core-shell hybrid nanoparticles consisting of Ag (core) and polydiacetylene (PDA, shell) through the assistance of localized surface plasmon (LSP) effect for the effective biosensor. Core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) are fabricated in deionized water through a sequential process of reprecipitation and self-assembly. The Raman signal of PDA on core-shell NPs is enhanced more than 100 times. Also, highly enhanced photoluminescence is observed on Ag/PDA hybrid NPs after coupling of the complementary t-DNA with p-DNA which are immobilized on PDA shell. This indicates that the core Ag affects the Raman and PL of PDA through the LSP resonance, which can be caused by the energy and/or charge transfer caused by the LSP coupling and the strong electromagnetic field near Ag NP surface. Only electrons present on the surface interact with the PDA shell, not involving the electrically neutral part of the electrons inside the Ag NP. Furthermore, this work shows that as prepared Ag/PDA NPs functionalized by probe DNA can sense the target DNA with an attomolar concentration (100 attomole).

Self-healing, an autonomous repairing process stimulated by damage, has recently attracted a great deal of attention in the field of medical and mechanical engineering as well as from scientists, due to its valuable potential applications. However, as the self-healing process is mediated by specific functional materials, practical applications have been limited. Here, we introduce a healable homopolymer microcapsule that can self-heal a crack or cleaved part through a photochemical [2 + 2] cycloaddition process. Microcapsules were prepared through photopolymerization and suspension polymerization, each containing 1,1,1-tris (cinnamoyloxymethyl) ethane (TCE) and 1,1-di (cinnamoyloxymethyl) ethane (DCE) monomers, which act as healing materials. TCE and DCE monomers were polymerized into poly (TCE-co-DCE) without a photoinitiator under illumination. The epoxy specimen embedded with microcapsules showed obvious healing performance during illumination after cracking. From the FT-IR spectra for each step of the healing process, the specimen could be repeatedly self-healed through the reversible process of cyclobutane cross-links to the original cinnamate and vice versa. This work shows an alternative approach using homopolymer microcapsules to accomplish the repeatable self-healing of a crack without interface discontinuity, which could be adopted as a healing substance in various paints.

Development of eco-friendly polymer foams is an urgent research topic because of the serious environmental pollution caused by trash heaps and the time-release of harmful gases. Polymer PVC foam using azodicarbonamide as a chemical foaming agent has been highly requested for further improvement due to the residual ammonia gas that continuously leaks out. Here, we demonstrate an effective and costless process for the reduction of releasing ammonia from PVC foams using the overcoat technology of deodorants. We have selected four candidate materials, gelite, zeolite, terra alba, and fumed silica as original materials for the deodorant of ammonia, and they showed an ammonia deodorization rate (ADR) of over 80% without any treatment except the fumed silica. When we over-coated the UV-curing agent mixed deodorants on the PVC foams (thickness ~300 µm), the ADR of the terra alba and zeolite complex foams was remarkably higher than 90%, however, the specific gravity and chromaticity were not changed within 20%. This indicates that our developed process using deodorant layer for ammonia reduction has a high potential for the production of eco-friendly polymer foams.

Recently, the light-matter interaction at nanoscale has attracted great interest from physicists, chemists and material scientists, as it gives peculiar optical properties that couldn’t be observed at the bulk scale. The synthesis and characterization of organic-inorganic heterostructures forming quantum dots, nanowires or nanotubes provide opportunities to understand their photophysical mechanism and to apply optoelecronic devices. Herein, we report a huge enhanced luminescence in a coaxial-like heterostructured poly (3-methylthiophene) (P3MT) with Au. We electrochemically synthesized P3MT nanowires (NWs) on a nanoporous template, and sequentially deposited Au on the surface of P3MT NWs. The diameter of heterostructured P3MT/Au NWs was about 200 nm, where the cladding-shape Au were about 10 nm. The visible range absorbance, with two new absorption peaks of P3MT/Au NWs, was significantly increased compared with that of P3MT NWs. Accordingly, the photoluminescence (PL) of a P3MT/Au NW was enormously increased; up to 170 times compared to that of P3MT NWs. More interestingly, an unexpected enhancement of PL was observed from cross-junction point of P3MT/Au NWs. The abnormal PL properties of P3MT/Au NWs were attributed to the charge transfer and the surface plasmon resonance between the cladding-shape Au and the core-shape P3MT, which resulted in the enhanced quantum yield. This incites us to reconsider the light-matter interaction in polymer-metal hybrid structures applicable for high-performance optoelectronic devices.

The genetic alterations currently identified in papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMCs) are insufficient for distinguishing tumors with aggressive features. We aimed to identify candidate markers associated with lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM, N1sb disease) in patients with PTMC using transcriptomic analysis. RNA sequencing was performed on 26 matched tumor and normal thyroid tissue samples (N0, n = 14; N1b, n = 12), followed by functional enrichment analyses of differentially expressed genes (DEGs). EcoTyper was used to explore the distinct tumor microenvironment (TME). We identified 631 DEGs (213 upregulated and 418 downregulated) between N1b and N0 PTMCs. The most significantly upregulated genes in N1b were associated with tumorigenesis, adhesion, migration, and invasion. DEGs were mainly enriched in the pathways of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, TME, wound healing, and inhibition of matrix metalloproteases. We predicted the activation of these pathways in N1b PTMCs. N1b PTMCs had a unique TME with abundant fibroblasts and epithelial cells, associated with an increased risk of disease progression. Fibroblast marker genes, including POSTN, MMP11, TNFAIP6, and FN1, and epithelial cell marker genes, including NOX4, MFAP2, TGFVBI, and TNC, were selected. POSTN and FN1, fibroblast cell-specific genes, and NOX4 and TNC, epithelial cell-specific genes, were promising biomarkers for predicting LLNM development and recurrence in patients with PTMC. We delineated the cellular ecotypes within the TME of patients with N1b PTMC and revealed potential markers for predicting LLNM and the prognosis of PTMC. Background: Inflammatory biomarkers, such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), serve as valuable prognostic indicators in various cancers. This multicenter, retrospective cohort study assessed the treatment outcomes of lenvatinib in 71 patients with radioactive iodine (RAI)-refractory thyroid cancer, considering the baseline inflammatory biomarkers. Methods: This study retrospectively included patients from five tertiary hospitals in Korea whose complete blood counts were available before lenvatinib treatment. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were evaluated based on the median value of inflammatory biomarkers. Results: No significant differences in baseline characteristics were observed among patients grouped according to the inflammatory biomarkers, except for older patients with a higher-than-median NLR (=2) compared to their counterparts with a lower NLR (P= 0.01). Patients with a higher-than-median NLR had significantly shorter PFS (P=0.02) and OS (P=0.017) than those with a lower NLR. In multivariate analysis, a higher-than-median NLR was significantly associated with poor OS (hazard ratio, 3.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.24 to 7.29; P=0.015). However, neither the LMR nor the PLR was associated with PFS. A higher-than-median LMR (≥3.9) was significantly associated with prolonged OS compared to a lower LMR (P≥0.036). In contrast, a higher-than-median PLR (≥142.1) was associated with shorter OS compared to a lower PLR (P=0.039). Conclusion: Baseline inflammatory biomarkers can serve as predictive indicators of PFS and OS in patients with RAI-refractory thyroid cancer treated with lenvatinib. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AimsThe incidence and mortality of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have decreased over time in South Korea, where hepatitis B virus (HBV) in endemic. This study investigated the changes in the characteristics and clinical outcomes of HCC patients in Korea.MethodsPatients initially diagnosed with HCC and treated at the National Cancer Center, Korea between 2000 and 2015 (n = 4,291) were followed up until February 2017. Differences in patient characteristics and outcomes were compared between chronological cohorts: cohort A (2000-2004, n = 1,157) vs. B (2005-2009, n = 1,678) vs. C (2010-2015, n = 1,456).ResultsThe median age of the patient cohort was 57 years (range, 13-98 years), and male predominance was noted (81.6%). HBV infection was the most common etiology (74.8%).
