The intramolecular excited-state proton transfer (ESIPT) and internal conversion (IC) of o-hydroxybenzaldehyde was investigated by transient absorption measurements with 30 fs time resolution and quantitative fluorescence spectroscopy. A 45 fs delayed rise of the product emission and coherently excited vibrations indicate that the ESIPT is a ballistic motion of a well defined wavepacket along skeletal coordinates of the H-chelate ring. The IC proceeds as thermally activated process over an energy barrier of about 200 meV caused by an avoided crossing between the ππ*- and πσ*-state. The coordinates involved in the ESIPT and in the IC are found to be orthogonal. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Anthropogenic nitrogen (N) deposition and fertilization in boreal forests frequently reduces decomposition and soil respiration and enhances C storage in the topsoil. This enhancement of the C sink can be as strong as the aboveground biomass response to N additions and has implications for the global C cycle, but the mechanisms remain elusive. We hypothesized that this effect would be associated with a shift in the microbial community and its activity, and particularly by fungal taxa reported to be capable of lignin degradation and organic N acquisition. We sampled the organic layer below the intact litter of a Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) forest in northern Sweden after 20 years of annual N additions at low (12.5 kg N ha -1  yr -1 ) and high (50 kg N ha -1  yr -1 ) rates. We measured microbial biomass using phospholipid fatty-acid analysis (PLFA) and ergosterol measurements and used ITS metagenomics to profile the fungal community of soil and fine-roots. We probed the metabolic activity of the soil community by measuring the activity of extracellular enzymes and evaluated its relationships with the most N responsive soil fungal species. Nitrogen addition decreased the abundance of fungal PLFA markers and changed the fungal community in humus and fine-roots. Specifically, the humus community changed in part due to a shift from Oidiodendron pilicola, Cenococcum geophilum, and Cortinarius caperatus to Tylospora fibrillosa and Russula griseascens. These microbial community changes were associated with decreased activity of Mn-peroxidase and peptidase, and an increase in the activity of C acquiring enzymes. Our results show that the rapid accumulation of C in the humus layer frequently observed in areas with high N deposition is consistent with a shift in microbial metabolism, where decomposition associated with organic N acquisition is downregulated when inorganic N forms are readily available., Competing Interests: Declaration of competing interest AN declares employment with Stora Enso, and BF with the forestry cooperative Södra Skogsägarna. Endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria have been detected and isolated from the needles of conifer trees growing in North American boreal forests. Because boreal forests are nutrient-limited, these bacteria could provide an important source of nitrogen for tree species. This study aimed to determine their presence and activity in a Scandinavian boreal forest, using immunodetection of nitrogenase enzyme subunits and acetylene-reduction assays of native Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) needles. The presence and rate of nitrogen fixation by endophytic bacteria were compared between control plots and fertilized plots in a nitrogen-addition experiment. In contrast to the expectation that nitrogen-fixation rates would decline in fertilized plots, as seen, for instance, with nitrogen-fixing bacteria associated with bryophytes, there was no difference in the presence or activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria between the two treatments. The extrapolated calculated rate of nitrogen fixation relevant for the forest stand was 20 g N ha-1 year-1, which is rather low compared with Scots pine annual nitrogen use but could be important for the nitrogen-poor forest in the long term. In addition, of 13 colonies of potential nitrogen-fixing bacteria isolated from the needles on nitrogen-free media, 10 showed in vitro nitrogen fixation. In summary, 16S rRNA sequencing identified the species as belonging to the genera Bacillus, Variovorax, Novosphingobium, Sphingomonas, Microbacterium and Priestia, which was confirmed by Illumina whole-genome sequencing. Our results confirm the presence of endophytic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in Scots pine needles and suggest that they could be important for the long-term nitrogen budget of the Scandinavian boreal forest., (© The Author(s) 2023. Residential heating with solid fuels is one of the major drivers for poor air quality in Central and Eastern Europe, and coal is still one of the major fuels in countries, such as Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. In this work, emissions from a single-room heater fueled with brown coal briquettes (BCBs) and spruce logs (SLs) were analyzed for signatures of inorganic as well as semivolatile aromatic and low-volatile organic constituents. High variations in organic carbon (OC) emissions of BCB emissions, ranging from 5 to 22 mg MJ -1 , were associated to variations in carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, ranging from 900 to 1900 mg MJ -1 . Residential BCB combustion turned out to be an equally important source of levoglucosan, an established biomass burning marker, as spruce logwood combustion, but showed distinct higher ratios to manosan and galactosan. Signatures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emitted by BCB combustion exhibited defunctionalization and desubstitution with increasing combustion quality. Lastly, the concept of island and archipelago structural motifs adapted from petroleomics is used to describe the fraction low-volatile organic compounds in particulate emissions, where a transition from archipelago to island motifs in relation with decreasing CO emissions was observed in BCB emissions, while emissions from SL combustion exhibited the island motif.

Following alerts about the diminishing role of health risk assessment (HRA) in informing public health decisions, this study examines specific HRA topics with the aim of identifying possible solutions for addressing this compelling situation. The study administered a survey among different groups of stakeholders involved in HRA or decision-making, or both. The responses show various understandings of HRA in the decision-making context-including confusion with the health impact assessment (HIA)-and confirm recurring foundational issues within the risk analysis field that contribute to the growth of inconsistency in the HRA praxis. This inconsistency lowers the effectiveness of HRA to perform its primary purpose of informing public health decisions. Opportunities for improving this situation come at the beginning of the assessment process, where greater attention should be given to defining the assessment and decision-making contexts. Both must reflect the concerns and expectations of the stakeholders regarding the needs and purpose of an HRA on one side, and the methodological and procedural topics relevant for the decision case at hand on the other. The HRA process should end with a decision follow-up step with targeted auditing and the participation of stakeholders to measure its success.

Human biomonitoring (HBM) is a rapidly developing field that is emphasized as an important approach for the assessment of health risks. However, its value for health risk assessment (HRA) remains to be clarified. We performed a review of publications concerned with applications of HBM in the assessment of health risks. The selection of publications for this review was limited by the search engines used (only PubMed and Scopus) and a timeframe of the last five years. The review focused on the clarity of 10 HRA elements, which influence the quality of HRA. We show that the usage of HBM data in HRA is limited and unclear. Primarily, the key HRA elements are not consistently applied or followed when using HBM in such assessments, and secondly, there are inconsistencies regarding the understanding of fundamental risk analysis principles and good practices in risk analysis. Our recommendations are as follows: (i) potential usage of HBM data in HRA should not be non-critically overestimated but rather limited and aligned to a specific value for exposure assessment or for the interpretation of health damage; (ii) improvements to HRA approaches, using HBM information or not, are needed and should strictly follow theoretical foundations of risk analysis.

Study Question: Is preterm delivery an infertility treatment-related adverse outcome in infertile women who conceived after reproductive surgery?, Summary Answer: Compared with matched fertile women, preterm delivery appears to be a modest infertility treatment-related adverse outcome in infertile women who have reproductive surgery then conceived naturally or after IVF/ICSI., What Is Known Already: Most observational studies have shown that women who receive any infertility treatment are more likely to deliver preterm than do fertile women. However, studies on the outcome of pregnancies in infertile women who conceive naturally after reproductive surgery are scarce., Study Design, Size, Duration: This was a single-centre historical two-part study: cohort and matched cohort study. Anonymized data of 761 infertile women who conceived after reproductive surgery and 758 fertile women were obtained by linking three computerized databases from 1 July 2012 to 31 December 2015., Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: In the cohort study, we evaluated the association between the mode of conception and preterm delivery <37 and <32 gestational weeks in 703 infertile women, with a singleton pregnancy who conceived after reproductive surgery, using logistic regression adjusted for relevant co-variates to calculate the adjusted odds ratio with a 95% CI. In the matched cohort study, we evaluated preterm delivery as infertility treatment-related adverse outcome using the propensity score (PS) method. The matched cohort comprised 758 infertile women and 758 fertile women with a twin or singleton pregnancy. Infertile women conceived after reproductive surgery either naturally or through IVF/ICSI. Infertile and fertile women were matched using PS matching. Infertile and fertile women were matched for pre-defined risk factors for preterm delivery. Three infertile women out of an original 761 were not included in the analysis because they lacked all required matching variables. We performed a 1:1 matching with an optimal matching algorithm with a caliper width of the linear predictor of 0.1 standard deviations. The effect of reproductive surgery on preterm delivery was evaluated in the PS-matched sample using Pearson's χ2 test and presented as the odds ratio (OR) with 95% CI. All women delivered at the Department of Perinatology, University Medical Centre Ljubljana, Slovenia., Main Results and the Role of Chance: Among 761 infertile women who conceived after reproductive surgery, 428 (56.2%) women conceived naturally and 333 (43.8%) conceived after IVF/ICSI. The incidence of twin pregnancies was significantly lower after natural conception (2.6% vs 14.1%). Among the 703 infertile women with a singleton pregnancy, 417 (59.3%) conceived naturally and 286 (40.7%) conceived after IVF/ICSI. Adjusted for maternal age and parity in infertile women with singleton pregnancies, IVF/ICSI showed a moderate association with preterm delivery <32 weeks. Compared with natural conception after reproductive surgery, the odds for preterm delivery after IVF/ICSI was 1.07 (95% CI 0.63-1.81) <37 weeks and 2.25 (95% CI 0.80-6.34) <32 weeks. Preterm delivery appears to be a modest infertility treatment-related adverse outcome. Compared with fertile women in the PS-matched sample, infertile women who conceived after reproductive surgery either naturally or after IVF/ICSI the odds of preterm delivery <37 weeks were 1.31 (95% CI 0.97-1.78) and odds of preterm delivery <32 weeks were 1.57 (95% CI 0.78-3.18). However, none of the estimations were statistically significant., Limitations, Reasons for Caution: The main limitations of the study were the retrospective design, the heterogeneity of the types of reproductive surgery performed and underlying reproductive pathologies. The low number of preterm deliveries in the present study might influence the precision of estimations., Wider Implications of the Findings: The present study aims to alter the prevailing opinion that reproductive surgery should only be considered preceding IVF to increase implantation and pregnancy rates after IVF. It implies that in selected infertile women who have had reproductive surgery, a high rate of natural conception, a low rate of multiple pregnancies, and a modest infertility treatment-related effect on preterm delivery should be the reasons to encourage natural conception after reproductive surgery. Objectives: The aims of this audit were twofold: (1) to demonstrate the contribution of the auditing process in evaluating the success of child and adolescent health policy in Slovenia between 2012 and 2019, and (2) to expand on the commentary published in the International Journal of Public Health in 2019 to demonstrate the benefits of auditing in improving public health policy in general., Methods: The audit followed health, safety and environmental approaches as per the standards of public health policy., Results: Due to poor intersectoral coordination and weak associations between environmental and health indicators, no clear evidence could be established that child and adolescent health policy contributed to positive changes in child and adolescent health from 2012 to 2019., Conclusions: Auditing should become an essential component of measuring the success of public health policies. Attention should also be paid to the following issues affecting youth health: sleeping and eating habits, economic migration, poverty, etc.

Objectives: Previous studies have found evidence for a genetic basis for pelvic organ prolapse (POP), but no genetic studies have differentiated between types of POP. This study investigated whether genetic variants in six previously suggested candidate loci for POP modify the risk of uterine prolapse (UP)., Study Design: One hundred patients, aged 30-55 years, who had undergone surgery due to total UP and 105 healthy controls were included in this study. After extracting the genomic DNA from peripheral blood, six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously identified for POP were genotyped, and association analysis was performed for contributing risk factors. RNA expression was determined from sacrouterine ligaments of patients and controls using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction., Results: The dominant genotype model for the T allele for SNP rs6051098 at the chromosome 20p13 locus was significant, and this remained significant with the risk factor regression model (p=0.046; odds ratio 1.93, 95 % confidence interval 1.01-3.66). The isocitrate dehydrogenase 3 beta (IDH3B) gene was the only potential candidate gene in the 20p13 locus that was significantly upregulated in sacrouterine biopsies in women with UP compared with controls (p = 0.034)., Conclusion: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to show that genetic risk factors contribute to UP, and suggested rs6051098 as the best candidate risk factor associated with UP. BACKGROUND Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a potentially serious complication of ovulation stimulation. Modest vulvar edema is frequently seen in a severe form of OHSS; however, cases of massive bilateral vulvar edema are rare and pathogenesis is uncertain. CASE REPORT We report a 31-year-old patient with massive vulvar edema and severe OHSS after IVF treatment with GnRH antagonist and gonadotropins. Five days after embryo transfer, she was hospitalized because of severe clinical manifestation of OHSS and on the fifth day after admission she developed a massive bilateral vulvar edema. After conventional medical therapy of OHSS, vulvar edema spontaneously resolved. CONCLUSIONS Hypoproteinemia with low oncotic pressure and certain personal tissue characteristics may play the main role in the pathogenesis of massive vulvar edema in OHSS.

Plastics are the most common material of marine litter and have become a global pollution concern. They are persistent in the environment where they gradually degrade into increasingly smaller particles-microplastics (MP). Our study presents results of sea-surface monitoring for MP in the Slovenian part of the Trieste Bay in the Northern Adriatic Sea. In 17 trawls conducted over a 20-month period we found a high average concentration of 406×10 3 MPparticles/km 2 . Over 80% of the particles were identified as polyethylene. The significant variability of MP concentrations obtained on different sampling dates is explained by use of surface current maps and a recently developed Markov chain marine litter distribution model for the Adriatic Sea., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
