The aim of this study was to investigate whether the type and form of oil (raw/non-oxidised (N) or post-frying/oxidised (O)) consumed in high-fat diets affect the oxidative status of an organism, as observed by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration as an oxidative factor and antioxidant enzyme activity.

Globalisation “takes” its victims, which the authors believe means that the future of small- and medium-sized towns has become uncertain in Europe. The role of centres is continuously increasing, and most researchers prefer to analyse the competitiveness and innovativeness of metropolitan areas. In this study, we characterise the small- and medium-sized towns in the central–eastern European region as well as explore their possible development path. The authors are convinced that one way for these towns to survive is through strengthening of innovation abilities, which means increasing the innovation performances of economic stakeholders and new forms of interaction among other institutions in order to handle social problems. The theoretical starting point is the interpretation and presentation of the micropolitan (without big towns) regions as well as understanding the concept of technological and social innovation. As the result of the research, the innovation measurements carried out in some of the settlements will be represented. These experiences can help the small- and medium-sized towns keep up with global competition and cancel migration and erosion of intellectual potential.

Introduction: The aim of the study was to assess the influence of α-lipoic acid (ALA) on the morphology of the aorta and liver of rabbits fed high fat diet with addition of oxidised (ORO) and non-oxidised rapeseed oil (N-ORO).

Innovation process research is changing. In addition to the former territorial approach (examining countries or regions), the description of innovation cooperation in local areas is becoming more and more accepted. Instead of the innovation ability of the traditional large enterprises, research has begun to study the role of small and medium-sized enterprises, non-governmental organizations, local governments, and educational institutions (especially universities), which foreshadows the development of a new innovation system. In 2015, we conducted a study focusing on the civil and corporate relations of a major university. We tried to determine the new directions based on the economic and social cooperation as well as to search for the practical implementation of the theoretical helixes in these interactions. We came to the conclusion that universities not only are determinative according to the triple helix model but also have a prominent role in the creation of new innovation ecosystems, particularly in a well-defined geographical area.

Vienna faces a ‘twofold housing and refugee crisis’ amid ongoing migration to Europe. As housing options become increasingly limited, refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers often struggle to find adequate housing, spending a disproportionate share of their income on substandard options. This research highlights progressive trends in Vienna’s refugee housing sector, particularly following the 2009 introduction of ‘Social Sustainability’ in building competitions by the City Council. This initiative has fostered several collaborative housing communities that support inclusive living. By analyzing four of these projects, the study identifies key factors that facilitate newcomers' social and spatial integration. Ultimately, the paper aims to advocate for newcomers’ right to quality housing, emphasizing the everyday and long-term challenges faced by inclusive communities striving for conviviality in a state of thrown togetherness.

Abstract Aims Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a multifactorial, multisystemic syndrome that involves alterations in lipid metabolism. This study aimed to test whether distinct plasma lipid profiles or lipid entities or both are associated with clinical and functional echocardiographic parameters in HFpEF. Methods and results We examined the human plasma lipidome in HFpEF patients (n = 18) with left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% and N‐terminal pro‐brain natriuretic peptide (NT‐proBNP) >125 pg/mL and control subjects (n = 12) using mass spectrometry‐based shotgun lipidomics. The cohort included 8 women and 22 men with average age of 67.8 ± 8.6 SD. The control and disease groups were not significantly different with respect to age, body mass index, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and waist‐to‐hip ratio. The success of developing e-learning is determined by curriculum quality, the availability of technological requirements and, to an even greater extent, by user response to the technology introduced in the process. Digital enhancement of education through e-learning solutions should also take the unique attributes of the targeted local region, institution, target group and field of expertise into consideration prior to implementation. The paper reports on research conducted to understand the approach of engineering students (n=94) to e-learning supported by Moodle in Hungary, including computer use, evaluation of e-learning materials, systems and online exams. The research used an online questionnaire for exploring the motivation and restrictive factors of using e-learning. Survey findings confirm that e-learning functions primarily in a complementary way to traditional learning. 87.2% of the students in the sample just download the learning materials and use those offline often or regularly. 58% of them find the usefulness of e-learning materials good, but structure or aesthetics is evaluated weak or moderate by more than half of the respondents. Considering the exams, 38% of the students with previous experience in online exams prefer the traditional exams, while 25% prefer the online format. Since access to technological tools and services required for effective e-learning is available, continuous training of the teachers and tutors is necessary both for developing their everyday skills and recognizing the LCMS opportunities.

Abstract The application of hydrogen proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) in greenhouse gas emission free heavy-duty vehicles requires extremely durable PEMFC components with service lives in the range of 30,000 h. Hence suitable test and analysis methods are required that reflect realistic operation scenarios, but significantly accelerate aging. For this purpose, a dynamic accelerated stress test was developed, which is coupled with a comprehensive in-depth in-situ and ex-situ analysis program to determine the aging processes of a PEMFC membrane electrode assembly (MEA). The test comprehends dynamic cycling between low, moderate and high load, different temperature and humidity conditions as well as recovery sequences to distinguish between reversible and irreversible failure modes. All phases of the PEMFC system (i.e. solid, liquid and gaseous) are monitored on-line during aging by sophisticated electrochemical, mass spectrometric and ion chromatographic analytical methods. The structural and elemental composition of the MEA before and after the aging program (post-mortem) are investigated by X-ray fluorescence, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. This program was able to age a commercial PEMFC to end-of-life in 1000 h, while providing an accurate picture of the aging processes involved.

Abstract Microbial communities at the airway mucosal barrier are conserved and highly ordered, in likelihood reflecting co-evolution with human host factors. Freed of selection to digest nutrients, the airway microbiome underpins cognate management of mucosal immunity and pathogen resistance. We show here the initial results of systematic culture and whole-genome sequencing of the thoracic airway bacteria, identifying 52 novel species amongst 126 organisms that constitute 75% of commensals typically present in heathy individuals. Clinically relevant genes encode antimicrobial synthesis, adhesion and biofilm formation, immune modulation, iron utilisation, nitrous oxide (NO) metabolism and sphingolipid signalling. Using whole-genome content we identify dysbiotic features that may influence asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. We match isolate gene content to transcripts and metabolites expressed late in airway epithelial differentiation, identifying pathways to sustain host interactions with microbiota. Our results provide a systematic basis for decrypting interactions between commensals, pathogens, and mucosa in lung diseases of global significance.

Background: The value of early integration of palliative care has been demonstrated increasingly for the past years in both oncological and nononcological diseases. Outpatient palliative care services might represent a feasible approach to implement supportive care in early disease. In this study, we aimed at evaluating which patients use and benefit from outpatient palliative care services, which symptoms are addressed most, and which support services are installed in this early phase of disease. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the entire patient collective of a recently developed palliative care outpatient clinic within the leading university hospital in Switzerland for a period of five years. Sociodemographics, symptoms, and information on disease as well as patient-reported outcomes were retrieved from the electronic patient files. Demographic and clinical data were analyzed by descriptive statistics between groups and survival was analyzed by means of Kaplan?Meier estimates and log-rank test. Results: We report on 642 consultations of 363 patients between 2016 and 2020. Patients had a mean of 1.8 visits (range 1?10), with n?=?340 patients (93.7%) of patients suffering from an oncological disease. Overall symptom load was high, with n?=?401 (73.7%) of patient-reported outcomes reporting two or more symptoms. Distress levels of 5 or higher were reported in n?=?78 (30.4%) of available patient-reported outcomes. Independent of the origin of primary disease and the length of the disease trajectory, patients were referred to the palliative care service in median only four months before death. Conclusion: We identify high symptom load and distress in the outpatient palliative patient population. Patients benefitted from supportive medication, improvement of ambulatory support systems and advance care planning, and more than one-third of patients remained in follow-up, indicating a good acceptance of the service. Overcoming the overall late referral could, however, further increase the quality of life at earlier stages of disease.

A gazdaságban az elmúlt évtizedekben végbemenő szerkezeti átalakulásból és az üdülési szokások megváltozásának hatásaiból kiindulva a mai vállalkozók motivációit, problémáit és piacmegtartó erejét tárja fel a tanulmány. A mikro, kis- és középvállalkozói réteg jellemzőinek feltérképezése során arra kerestük a választ, hogy a Balaton Kiemelt Üdülőkörzetben jelen lévő gazdaságszociológiai folyamatok hogyan befolyásolják sikerességüket. A turisztikai desztináció fejlődését, az életminőség javítását és a balatoni identitás növelését segíthetik a vállalkozások önfoglalkoztatással, munkahelyteremtéssel. Ehhez azonban nélkülözhetetlen a térségi összefogás és az itt élők együttműködése.

Although the notion of English language teacher identity has drawn increasing interest in the literature, little is known about how teachers of English construct identities in disadvantaged settings. This study explored how three teachers of English in disadvantaged Chilean public schools construct identities and exercise agency while using prescribed textbooks. The investigation used a narrative inquiry methodology and was positioned within a sociocultural paradigm. Based on semi-structured online interviews, thematic narrative analysis was used to analyze the data collected. The findings suggest that teachers construct various identities as textbook users depending on their previous experience, level of professional development, and interactions with textbooks. According to the research, teachers exercise agency to construct new identities as textbook users by drawing on two temporal aspects that include prior experiences as English language learners and a mental image of the kind of teacher they want to become. Professional development and textbook interaction may also influence the construction of identities regarding textbook use. The article concludes with suggestions for language teachers and English language teacher education.
